Our take on the JVC KD-R740BT

Bluetooth is great for talking hands-free, but that's not the only way it can enhance your car A/V experience. Pair up JVC's KD-R740BT CD receiver with your smartphone, and enjoy audio streaming of Internet radio for more musical variety. And, with many Android™ phones you can receive text message notifications too.

Bluetooth® equipped for your mobile convenience

Bluetooth is great for talking hands-free, but that's not the only way it can enhance your car A/V experience. Pair up JVC's KD-R740BT CD receiver with your smartphone, and enjoy audio streaming of Internet radio for more musical variety. And, with many Android™ phones you can receive text message notifications too.

Pair two phones at once

Let's say you've got a business phone and a personal phone. Most car stereos with Bluetooth make you choose one for use in the car, but the KD-R740BT lets you pair two phones at once. And when a call comes in, the receiver will blink either blue or red, depending on the phone. So you'll be either have your business game face on, or be ready to relax and unwind when chatting with a friend.

The KD-R740BT's Smart Music Control is excellent for Android owners.

Great for Android™ smartphones

JVC's Smart Music Control works with Android phones to support voice commands for controlling your music. You'll be able to change songs, search your music, and more without raising a finger. But if you like to get your digits involved, you can use Smart Music Control to create playlists with the Mood Blender, or even adjust EQ settings with your phone. And this app lets you use your compatible Android phone's touchscreen to control many functions using finger swipes and gestures — for example, tap the screen to play and pause, or swipe right to skip forward a track. So pop your Android phone in a mount, and you can reach down and skip a track without taking your eyes off the road.

Never miss your favorite radio programs

Do you have news, sports, or other radio programs you don't want to miss? The KD-R740BT's radio timer feature automatically switches on the radio and tunes in the correct station, no matter what source you're on at the time. You can set the timer to work one time or daily, so it's great for catching the shows you enjoy during your daily commute.

Internet radio control

PANDORA® Internet Radio is one of the most popular streaming stations on the web. iPhone users can control PANDORA through this JVC when connected to the USB slot, while Android and Blackberry owners control Pandora through the Bluetooth connection. Either way, you'll enjoy access to your favorite stations and display of song, artist, and album information on the receiver's screen while you're listening.

Want to keep your steering wheel controls?

In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the receiver, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

iPod note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

I have been using this deck for a week now and am very happy with how it works. This is the second JVC deck I have owned and would recomend them to anyone. Sound quality is very good and the EQ adjustment is the best I have used. The radio works well, complaints about losing stations can be fixed by selecting "WIDE" in the tuner setup, this will allow you to pull in distant channels but may increase noise. There is lots of power to drive most speaker systems and set up for a sub is very good with selectable crossover frequency and leve adjustment. A nice feature is the ability to adjust the volume of each input device seperatly, so if your iPod volume is lower than the other signals you can boost it so that all in puts are at the same volume. All in all a good deck for a good price.

Pros: Great sound lots of EQ adjustment

Cons: JVC needs to move the DEMO to the end of the menu selection, first Menu selection should be EQ not DEMO

    Great unit!

I replace the factory unit from my Ford Ranger with this unit. I basically wanted a stereo with a CD player, but this is so much more than that. I really like the Bluetooth and since it is now illegal to use a hand held cell phone in my town that is one of the most used features. The sound quality is good, better than the original. It is easy to operate all of it's functions and looks good too. I'm pleased that I chose this unit.

Pros: sounds good, looks good, Bluetooth.

    Cons: none for me.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Pickup up this head unit for my 1995 Land Cruiser. The installation was an absolute breeze and this was the first time I've done it. Hat's off to Crutchfield for perfect instructions. The unit is simple to operate and through the USB, Aux, CD breathed new life into the almost 20 year old stock speakers. So much so that I'm not going to bother replacing them. Bluetooth connection was very easy and continues to function, and therefore so does the Pandora app through bluetooth. I do have to say the sound quality through blue tooth is pretty poor as compared to the USB, Aux, and CD. So much so that I rarely use the bluetooth audio features because you have to turn the volume all the way up to get a decent volume. Again, this is a really old speaker set up, so take that into account. Everything else is great. Not the most flashy unit, but great quality, easy install, and nice power from the unit.

Pros: Ease of install, functionality, options like Bluetooth, Pandora, USB, Aux, CD, and power for a very low cost. Works well with Android for bluetooth

Cons: Bluetooth audio sound quality is lacking

Great product! Especially for the low price! The only 4-star I gave it was the "Ease of Use." It was not very complicated for me, but I'm a computer electronics are 2nd nature to me. However, I can see where some people would get frustrated with the menu system. The options are sometimes tucked in weird categories. Other than that no complaints. The sound quality is great! The colors are bright and vibrant and it's a sturdy little build! Definitely recommend this!

Pros: -Quality -Sturdy -Bluetooth streaming -Aux inputs -No loss of antenna signal -PRICE

Cons: -Menu is a little confusing for some users.

You can't beat the features included for the price of this unit. I replaced the tired unit in my 2nd car(2002 Chrysler 300M Special. The installation kit fit perfectly and after 20 minutes spent soldering the wire adapter, it took all of 20 minutes to complete the installation. I have no prior experience with Bluetooth in a car, but I'm now a convert. Hands free phone calls are a breeze, Pandora connectivity and Bluetooth streaming open up listening options that I didn't previously have. As some reviews mention, the Bluetooth syncing can take a couple seconds, but its certainly not a deal breaker. The front mounted USB is convenient for memory sticks, and the line in is perfect for Sirius. I have no complaints at this price point.

Pros: Features; Price; Ease of installation

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First off this is a great value for the features. I installed it in my 06 Wrangler it sounds better than the Pioneer it was replacing and cost less. The great thing is it works great with an android phone. It is amazing that so few manufacturers do since there are actually more android users than Iphone users. Installation using the Crutchfield was super simple. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because the functions are not intuitive. Connecting the phone wasn't that bad but I actually had to dive into the instruction manual to get it out of demo and set the time. Everyone knows how guys hate that. But if you are looking for a great head unit with plenty of features and great sound at a bargain price I don't know if you can do better.

Pros: Works great with android phones. Sounds great. Great price.

    Cons: Set isn't intuitive

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Seems like a sturdy unit. Good clear instructions manual. Good sound. lots of options, a slight learning curve on operation and menu search (ex. When using the Bluetooth audio with device like iphone/android, I listen to podcasts, you press the menu button to puase but when listening to the usb connection you press the volume button in to pause). That said its a great unit and so far operates above my expectations.

Pros: sound, great customization, able to shut off or minimize the animation and lights, great Bluetooth audio, great USB functions, has analog connection too. Great value.

Cons: interface and controls can be a little tricky, but don't let that persuade you, it's better than the majority of stereos out there with all these options.

I was suggested this stereo by the support rep because of the price and a few requirements that I had like Bluetooth compatibility. The unit was very easy to install with the DIN replacement kit and wire harness. There was a few too many menus to go through to set it up, but pretty easy to connect the Bluetooth. Once connected I was able to connect Pandora after downloading an app on my cellphone.

Pros: Great Sound Quality, Bluetooth Connection, Pandora Controls, Price for Quality, Android Compatible

Cons: Too Many Menus, Need More Android Apps

    great upgrade, easy to install

    1998 Volkswagen GTI
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this head unit in my '98 VW Golf GTI. It fit without modification to the car and I was able to install it easily (it took an hour going slowly and methodically). The Crutchfield site said the radio would not fit unless I removed the rear brace for the radio in my car but the JVC site said it would fit, and it turned out JVC was right. Crutchfield tech support was great, with immediate help when ordering and when I had questions during install. I recommend talking with a person when ordering -- they double checked a couple of things that needed to be changed for my order for my car. The iPod, Bluetooth Audio, and hands free phone features all work very well. My calls are clear for me and for people on the other side of the call. The sound of the system is okay, not great, but that could be simply the factory speakers, which I did not replace. The controls are okay once you read the manual and get used to them -- it would be easier if JVC were more consistent across modes e.g. using iPod input via the USB connection you push the control knob to pause the music, using Bluetooth audio to listen to music you push the menu button to pause the music -- silly differences like that make it harder to learn and remember the controls. Note: for rating the specific attributes, I don't have other radios for comparison for ease of use or build quality. Both may be exceptional compared to other radios but compared to what I would really like I gave them a middle rating.

Pros: Hands free phone calls USB and Aux input for my iPod / iPhone Bluetooth audio streaming Lights can be dimmed sufficiently for comfort when driving at night

Cons: Cannot match light colors to color of other lights on dashboard (for me a minor point) Controls are a bit confusing from one mode to the next

    Poor FM reception

    KC from Minnesota on 7/22/2013

After just over a month of having the JVC KD-R740BT, I am unimpressed by this model. I replaced a factory stereo which was bottom of the line, AM/FM only with just 2 speakers. I purchased good speakers with this unit and while sound quality is better than the factory unit, I lost two FM stations I was able to receive with the low end GM factory unit and AM reception is also very bad. The radio has very poor reception compared to ALL of my previous car stereos. I also find the station buttons (rocker switches) are difficult to use. They are tiny and you have to look directly at them to make sure you hit the correct side of the rocker as well as avoiding pushing the right side of one switch and the left side of the next. Another thing I miss is the factory unit protected you from a high volume blast when you change from an MP3 player where you must turn up the head unit volume and revert back to FM or CD where less volume is needed. So if you had the MP3 in when you got out and you get in the next morning and turn on the FM, the volume is sky high and you will get blasted. I won't use it to stream music but I have used the memory key and it works , MP3 through AUX is nice.

    Pros: None really

Cons: Poor AM/FM reception, this is a major issue. Terrible small rocker switches

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

With the harness supplied, it's a quick and easy install. All the basics are there (AM, FM CD USB, AUX, Bluetooth, hands free). I don't need a unit that composes its own tunes, but with so many apps available, I'm sure one of them will do just that. For the price, you can't beat it.

Pros: Easy installation and easy listening.

Cons: The user's manual requires reading between the lines in places.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this unit as a gift for my teenage niece. Her first car is a 99 Mustang. The Bluetooth feature is what I wanted to have for her as teenage girls and texting while driving is a bad combination. She charges her iphone while driving and is never distracted while driving. The sound is fantastic through the amplified speakers and she is the envy of all her friends. Installation was a breeze thanks to Crutchfield's technical support and for less than $200 and I have some piece of mind when she's out driving around. I have never had any problems with JVC and continue to be a great fan.

Pros: Hands free driving via Bluetooth is great, while the USB outlet encourages safe driving habits while it charges her her iphone. The sound is all you could want and the price makes it a no-brainer. Crutchfields technical assistance is second to none.

Cons: Remote control needs to be larger as it keeps getting lost in the car.

Playing music from my cell phone is easy and just in time with changing cell phone laws. the install was easy and it fit the dash very well. I would highly recommend the JVC radio

    2004 Jeep Wrangler
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking for a decent replacement for my 2004 Jeep Wrangler X TJ. I wanted something that had bluetooth connectivity to my android Droid X as well as my wife's iPhone, and also wanted something with a front USB port, subwoofer RCA outputs.. This fit all of those requirements, and has features that I never new I wanted to boot. Fit was perfect, install painless thanks to Crutchfield including every part needed to make it painless. Took a few minutes to solder the included wiring harness adapter, but once it was done, literally took about 15 minutes to actually install the radio. I shopped around, and to be honest, Crutchfield was not the absolute lowest price for the headunit, but when you factor in the wiring harness adapter, mounting bezel, antenna adapter, etc. that were all included at no extra cost, plus the speed with which they ship the product, I wouldn't ever buy another product like this through anyone else. I have noted that the bluetooth range seems limited, not sure if this is the nature of my vehicle's construction or the radio itself, but I've tried several bluetooth devices, and literally if I'm more then a foot away, the music streaming becomes choppy and/or stops altogether. I've tried three different devices and they all behave similarly, so its not the device, but the reception at the unit. I can live with it though, still beats having to have the device hard wired. Overall a nice unit, no hesitations to recommend it.

Pros: Easy to install, relatively cheap, bluetooth, front usb, subwoofer rca's

Cons: Limited bluetooth range, radio reception is average.

Great value in a head unit

Ari D from Charlottesville, VA on 6/9/2013

Haven't really tested all the little bells and whistles yet, but the sound, the bluetooth connection, and the ease of use are excellent for the price point.

Pros: Good value, easy to use, fairly full-featured.

Cons: When you have GPS navigation on (in iPhone, Google Maps) connected by bluetooth, and you're listening to the radio (FM, at least), the bluetooth doesn't override the FM radio signal. When a phone call comes in, it does shut off the radio and connect the call, but the turn-by-turn navigation works wen you're on some other sound source, like AUX or USB.

This thing syncs with my samsung galaxy s3 pandora and listening to my music on my phone is a breeze. Still working out how to to control my music with hands free, but thats my fault not JVC. Very intuitive system, I see some people complaining about some features they would like, its an inexpensive radio with bluetooth that works with android. You have nothing to complain about. I used the hands free to make calls, people had no idea that I was on a hands free system. I always call my buddy who has a Parrot Hands Free system and it is really hard to here him with it, not a fan. Make sure that your microphone is put by the rear view mirror, much better sound.

Pros: control Pandora through your radio , AWESOME!!!! Hands Free Bluetooth, saved me another $165 ticket , NYC sucks like that. Great Sound , very clear and loud through factory speakers, will upgrade speakers soon. You get what you need to put in the radio with Crutchfield. I always order my radios through crutchfield.

Cons: NOTHING, come on its an inexpensise radio with more features than some of the more expensive radios. I hate a Apple, so there are very few choice for android phones, this is a great one

I was looking for an aftermarket headunit for my leased vehicle. I purchased this item based on other reviews. I always look at the bad reviews first to see what problems people have had with products I am looking to buy and it seems that the problems other people had were isolated. The installation was pretty much straight forward. The only problem I had was with the radio reception. I spoke to Gunthrie at Crutchfield and he was able to help me very quickly. For the record, there was nothing wrong with the radio. It was I that forgot to connect the blue wires. After that, everything was great. It is a pretty simple unit with great features. I paired my phone (droid bionic) in under a minute. The USB works great too. Everything is working as it should. Great head unit and a great price. Getting all the installation gear for free was the icing on the cake.

I'm not an audiophile. I don't care about having the best speakers and a big sub in my trunk. All I wanted was a radio I could use to easily play podcasts from my phone during my 45 minute commute. This receiver does that and so much more. Installation was a breeze and took this novice a little over 3 hours to accomplish. Now I can listen to my music or podcasts from my phone through my car stereo. There is also Pandora integration. I sorely underestimated how nice it was. I have a Galaxy Nexus Android phone. Without touching my phone, all I have to do is select Pandora mode on the radio; the radio opens up the app on my phone and starts playing the station. You can thumbs up / down, skip song, and change station all without ever looking at your phone! It's really a great feature that now I don't want to be without. Hands free calling works fine, I've never used nor been on a call with a handsfree stereo that sounded great. It's good enough, but I won't use it for my hard of hearing father, or long conversations. I just wanted a BT receiver to play audio through, I got a much better receiver than I thought I would for the price. Truly a great product!

Pros: BT Audio, Pandora Integration, Handsfree BT Calling, Great sound quality and EQ presets.

Very impressed! The sound quality of the JVC compared to the stock receiver is remarkable. To directly compare the two units in my 2000 F150 I used the same CD in each and while holding the two units I swapped the plugs back and forth. The stock unit appeared somewhat muffled and did not play all the intricate sounds. The JVC straight out of the box instantly provided the full sound spectrum. You could actually hear the fine details like fingers sliding on the guitar strings. After adjusting the auto settings to my preferences it sounded like the entire band was in my truck. All this is with the stock speakers! Bluetooth streaming worked well, making and receiving phone calls was easy and worked well. The sound quality to the person on the other end of the line is not as good as phone only but very acceptable. Nice that you can adjust control brightness for day and night settings. Crutchfield always makes this job easy by providing instructions for your vehicle, your vehicle specific mounting adaptor, wiring adaptor and stock Ford radio removal tool.

Cons: Going through the audio EQ options is not easy driving... Backing out of the adjustment options could be a little less involved...

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got tired of my Black Sabbath tape so i needed an upgrade. Bluetooth works great with my iPod Touch for music. It's powerful enough to play music without an amp. I have a jeep so space is at a premium. Plus it is open most of the summer. My daughter loves the remote :) She can run her own play lists on the iPod.

Pros: Reasonably priced. Bluetooth works great! Plus Crutchfield sent all the installation gear. I soldered the harness the night before I installed the stereo so it only took an hour to replace my whole stereo in my jeep. I chose to solder because I go wheeling & didn't want anything to vibrate loose.

    Cons: None

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall the unit is pretty good, with a couple problems. The blue tooth works very well on my end, but I am told its a little hollow sounding on the other end. I use the cd player for audio books and can not find any way to make small adjustments. I can change the track, but cant advance or rewind the minutes. It has also had a small skipping problem occationally.

Pros: good sound, great price and helpful team on support

Cons: hollow sound on blue tooth, cd skips, cannot adjust cd finely enough

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Exactly what I was looking for. BT works well for streaming. Haven't really tried the hands free but since I drive a Jeep, I wasn't too interested in that feature. Will probably work well with the top up. Installation was extremely easy but I had to cross reference Crutcthfield's instructions with JVC's. the only other issue was removing the OEM head unit. The sound is a huge improvement over stock.

Pros: Great value; works as advertised

    Cons: Changing settings is cumbersome

Put this head unit in my 2001 dodge Ram it works great the bluetooth is great for hand free calling. Pandora is great no wires all wireless all round good unit

Pros: Looks great, sounds great bluetooth, an Pandora is perfect

    Cons: No HD Radio

    Does what it says

John Mc from Michigan on 1/24/2013

Took 3 hours to install. Most of that time was soldering the wires from the JVC to the Crutchfield Toyota adapters. Everything works as advertised, but since I was forwarned by other reviews, I can't complain about the small buttons and various menus that are needed to set up the unit. If you are someone who likes to constantly tweak the tone controls, you might not like this unit, as you need to navigate menus to do this. But if you're happy once you settle on a sound, then it should be okay. The Bluetooth hands-free calling works great, the mic sounds good. Before, I used to miss calls, because the stereo would be playing and I'd miss the ring. But with this setup, the music stops, the caller ID displays, you just press the volume knob to answer. Also, the Bluetooth for iPod works, as well as Android music player. Have not tried the Pandora. The 20 Watts RMS makes my factory speakers sound better than before, a decided plus. All in all, I'm very happy with the purchase!

Pros: Lots of features for the price, great sound.

Cons: Not the best for ergonomics.

    Great Uinit

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Easy install, only had to look at the manual for wiring diagram and to see where the USB cable it mentioned coming out of the back was for the bluetooth. The bluetooth is built into the reciever. Easy pairing with my SGS3. Worked great with S Voice which gave me easy access to my phone hands free.

Pros: Cheap Bluetooth ability, voice control. Relativity easy audio streaming. Fairly clear hands free voice calling.

Cons: High glare factor with face. Really bright days make it tough to see the display. At night, the display is still pretty bright even turned down. Menu can be a bit difficult to get some settings fixed. Annoying button press beep when first installed, can be turned off via menu.

Bluetooth Technology: The JVC KD-R740BT is equipped with built-in Bluetooth (version 2.1+EDR), allowing you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

    • Hands-Free Communication: HFP 1.5 (Hands Free Profile), OPP 1.1 (Object Push Profile), PBAB 1.0 (Phone Book Access Profile).
    • Audio Streaming: A2DP 1.2 (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP 1.3 (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the JVC KD-R740BT. See JVC's Bluetooth compatibility chart for a complete list of compatible Bluetooth enabled devices.

Pairing: Your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone or digital audio player must be paired with KD-R740BT before hands-free & wireless operation. You can register up to five Bluetooth enabled devices with the JVC head unit. You can keep two phones connected at all times (only one can be used during a call).

Bluetooth Hands-Free Communication: The head unit supports Bluetooth hands-free communication for your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone. The controls of the KD-R740BT can be used to dial a number, answer an in-coming call, or end a call. The unit also includes an external microphone (with mounting bracket) featuring adjustable gain, so you can carry on your side of the conversation while listening to the caller through your vehicles speakers.

    • Answering A Call: When a call comes in, a ring-tone will be heard through your vehicle's speaker and the caller's name or phone number will be displayed. You can answer the call from the head unit's front-panel controls, or setup the head unit to automatically answer the incoming call immediately or after 3/5/10 seconds. The KD-R740BT also supports the Call Waiting function, so you can answer another incoming call while suspending the current call you are on. Your compatible cell-phone must also support this feature.
    • Dialing A Number: Using the KD-R740BT, you can dial a phone number in one of the following ways:
      • Entering a Phone Number: Allows you to directly dial a phone number up to 32 digits from the head unit's front-panel rotary dial.
      • Speed Dialing: You can store up to 6 contacts in the memory of this unit for speed dialing.
      • Phone Book: You can dial by using the downloaded phone book. You can download phone book data from your cell phone to the KD-R740BT.You can search through your contacts alphabetically (A-Z) or numerically (0-9). Up to 400 numbers can be stored for each registered cell phone.
      • Call Log: The Call Log is a list of calls that have originated from and were received by this unit that you can dial. You can select Outgoing, Incoming, or Missed calls (up to 50 each).
      • Voice Dialing: If your mobile phone supports voice recognition, then you can dial out by voice command. Simply speak into the included microphone.
Note: During a conversation, you can switch between the Private Mode (talking directly on your cell phone) and the Hands Free Mode.

External Microphone: The JVC KD-R740BT includes an external microphone to carry on your side of your phone conversation and voice command dialing. The external wired microphone offers improved audio quality versus an integrated microphone, so you can be heard easier over noisy traffic and road noise. You can adjust the volume level and noise cancellation of the microphone without affecting the other sources. The external microphone features an attached 12' cable terminated by a right-angle 3.5mm connector which plugs into the mic input on the rear-panel of the head unit. The microphone offers an integrated mounting bracket which can be clipped to your vehicle's sun-visor or taped to your dash. The external microphone measures 0.525" (diameter) x 1.485" (depth).

Note: This unit does not offer an integrated front-panel microphone.

SMS: If your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone is compatible with SMS (Short Message Service), the JVC head unit will notify you when a message has been received. You must then use your phone to check the message. You cannot read, edit, or send a message through this unit.

Wireless Audio Streaming (w/ Metadata Display): The JVC KD-R740BT also supports wireless audio playback (AD2P) and control (AVRCP) of a Bluetooth enabled audio player or smartphone. The KD-R740BT will be able to control basic playback functions of your Bluetooth device's stored music; such as Play/Pause, Skip Next/Previous, Fast Forward/Rewind and Random/Repeat. The head unit will also display your stored music's song information; such as Artist name and Song/Album title. Simply press the "phone command" button on theKD-R740BT to engage Siri and use the included microphone to communicate with Siri. Siri's voice will heard through your vehicle's speakers. All Siri functions including hands-free calling, music search, setting reminders, text-messaging, audible navigation, and more can be done through the head unit and its microphone. The head unit will only display hands-free calling and Bluetooth audio information (all other functions of Siri are only audible through the KD-R740BT; visual data will still need to be viewed from your iPhone device).

Note: You can ask Siri to get directions to a destination and the turn-by-turn instructions will heard through your vehicle's speakers, while the on-screen map still displays on your iPhone 4S/5/5C/5S. The head unit's audio is attenuated while Siri provides audible directions.

Gesture control operations include Finger tap, Finger hold, Finger click, Finger swipe (right/left/up/down), and Finger curve (right/left/up/down). Voice command with proximity sensor automatically activates voice recognition when you hold your compatible smartphone up to your mouth, so you can speak music playback commands into the phone. Your Android smartphone must support Bluetooth SPP.
    • Music Player: By connecting the JVC CD receiver via USB to an Android smartphone that has the JVC Smart Music Control app installed, it allows you to list and search all of the songs stored inside the smartphone from the receiver by artist name or album name. Once the application has completed the analysis of the songs, simply move the on-screen "mood ball" to your current mood, and this application will generate a list of songs that most fits your mood. Your compatible Android smartphone must be recognized as a USB mass storage class device; not compatible with MTP protocol.

If an analog FM stereo broadcast is hard to receive, you can manually switch the tuner to Mono operation. You can also switch the tuner's IF filter to Wide or Auto to increase/decrease the sensitivity.

    Audio Section

24 Bit D/A Converter: The JVC KD-R740BT utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The KD-R740BT is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the KD-R740BT are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the KD-R740BT are as follows:

    • CEA2006 Specs: 20 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (200 total watts)

Amplifier Gain Control: When you are using the KD-R740BT with factory speakers (or those rated to less than 50 watts peak), the Amplifier Gain Control can limit the amount of power being sent to those speakers. When the Amp Gain Control is set to "low," the volume control ranges from 0 (minimum) to 30 (maximum). When using speakers rated higher than 50 watts peak, you can set the Amp Gain Control to "high," and the volume control will range from 0 to 50.

2.5V/4CH Preamp Output: The KD-R740BT is equipped with two pair of 2.5V preamp outputs (Front, Rear/SW). You can set the Rear/SW preamp outputs for connecting a pair of full-range rear speakers (through an external amplifier) or for connecting a subwoofer (through an external amplifier). When set for rear speakers, the rear outputs operate with the unit's fader control. When set for subwoofer, the outputs are non-fading.

Subwoofer Controls: When the unit's Rear/SW preamp output is set to Subwoofer, you can set the cutoff frequency of the low-pass filter at 55Hz, 85Hz, or 120Hz. You can adjust the head unit's subwoofer level between -8 and +8 (separate from the main volume level).

Pro EQ: The KD-R740BT is equipped with JVC's Pro EQ. The integrated equalizer offers 7 preset sound modes (Flat, Natural, Dynamic, Vocal Boost, Bass Boost, & User) suitable for the music genre of your choice. The User mode allows you to manually adjust the head unit's 3-band parametric EQ (Frequency, Level, and Q-Factor).

    Pro EQ
    Frequency Level Q
    Bass 60, 80, 100, 200 Hz +/- 12 dB (-6 to +6) 1.0, 1.25, 1.5, 2.0
    Midrange 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.5 kHz +/- 12 dB (-6 to +6) 0.75, 1.0, 1.25
    Treble 10.0, 12.5, 15.0, 17.5 kHz +/- 12 dB (-6 to +6) Fixed
Note: You can store Pro EQ bass, middle and treble tone settings for each source (CD, AM/FM, Aux, USB, iPod, Bluetooth, and Pandora).

Bass Boost: The unit's Bass Boost enhances low bass frequencies.

Loud (Loudness): This feature boosts low and high frequencies to produce a well-balanced sound at a low volume level. You can turn this feature on or off.

Volume Adjust: The input level of each source (other than FM) is adjustable relative to the FM radio volume, so there isn't a significant volume difference when changing sources. Each source is individually adjustable from -5 to +5.

Key Beep: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

    Display Features

Detachable Face: The JVC KD-R740BT features a detachable face to deter theft. A hard-plastic face-case is provided. An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can also be purchased for this unit. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.

LCD: The head unit features a 14-segment, one-line LCD with adjustable brightness and dimmer settings.

Brightness: The unit offers an adjustable display and button illumination brightness level (0-31) for day and nighttime driving.

Display/Button Illumination Dimmer: The display/button illumination dimmer can be set to Off (normal brightness at all times), On (display/button illumination is always dimmed), or Auto (display dims when 12-volts is applied to the orange/white illumination lead).

    Remote Control

Wireless Remote Control: The KD-R740BT comes supplied with a wireless remote control (RM-RK52). The remote contains Attenuator, Sound, Source, Tracking, and Volume functions. The remote operates off of a single CR2025 3V Lithium-cell battery (included).

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input wire (blue/yellow) within the included wiring harness that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately). Yes, this unit has a clock display but you have to click on the knob to see it. In other words, the lead display keeps showing all features available in the unit and you have to touch the knob for the time display. It does not show the hour in a continuous manner. eduardo [ EDUARDO  Nov 28, 2013 ]
Yes it will. The disp (display) button in the upper left corner of the radio changes the information that will be displayed. Push it until the day and time comes on. It steps through the tag information for music being played until you reach the time display, I hope this will be helpful. Jack [ JACK R  Nov 25, 2013 ]

Thanks for your question. This receiver has a built in amplifier, so most of the speakers we sell will work with it (some components and high end speakers would require an external amp). For advice on which speakers will fit your vehicle, and be a good match for this receiver, feel free to reach out an Advisor by phone or chat. [ Jeff  Nov 22, 2013 ]  Staff
