When a call comes in, it'll be easy to tell who's on the other line. Face it — you don't want to be staring at a scrolling display while you should be driving.

Sweet display
If knowledge is power, then prepare to feel important. JVC puts an awesome 4-line display in your dash with the KD-R80BT CD receiver. So whether you're listening to tunes on your iPod, checking out Pandora® on your iPhone, or streaming an app from your Android™ phone, you'll see plenty of song info. When a call comes in, it'll be easy to tell who's on the other line. Face it — you don't want to be staring at a scrolling display while you should be driving.

Plus, you can customize the look — choose from over 30,000 different shades for the left and right sides of the receiver.

Included Bluetooth® adapter
JVC includes a tiny little Bluetooth dongle that fits nicely on the rear USB input. Pair up the KD-R80BT CD receiver and an iPhone®, Android™ smartphone, or Blackberry™, and you can harness harness Bluetooth's true potential — you'll be able to receive text message notification, stream music, or access Internet radio stations, depending on your phone's features.

Great for Android™ smartphones
JVC's Android app lets you use your compatible Android phone's touchscreen to control the action using finger swipes and gestures — for example, tap the screen to play and pause, or swipe right to skip forward a track. So pop your Android phone in a mount, and you can reach down and skip a track without taking your eyes off the road.

Pair two phones at once
The KD-R80BT's built-in Bluetooth lets you pair two phones at once — no need to choose between your personal and business phones. When a call comes in, the receiver will blink either blue or red, so you'll know at a glance if your call is coming from home or the office. To answer a call, just tap the volume knob.

Higher-power USB connection
JVC upped the power in their USB port, which lets you keep your smartphone charged, even when it's doing several tasks at once. And with your smartphone connected, you can listen to its internal memory as one source and access the little microSD card as another.

Control PANDORA® Internet radio
JVC makes it easy to play your favorite PANDORA Internet Radio stations. iPhone users can control PANDORA when connected to the USB slot, while Android and Blackberry owners get full control of Pandora over the Bluetooth connection, depending on your phone's features.

Want to keep your steering wheel controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this JVC stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the JVC, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

Nice unit, easy to install. I wanted Siris radio, (not xm) and this one works great.

Pros: Great sound on infinity speakers

Cons: A little tricky to learn but with a little practice comes easy. Like the Bluetooth feature.

    Great Receiver

Andrew from Nashville, TN on 9/19/2013

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The sound quality is great. I really like the Bluetooth functionality both for calls and listening to music. The call quality is better than other hands free Bluetooth receivers. The display is also very nice, and there are many lighting options for the buttons and display.

Pros: Sound quality Bluetooth Display USB output

    Cons: None

Overall great unit. Switching from iPhone music to pandora was a but weird. Having to go into settings to get it to work properly every time did not seem to be very user friendly. Maybe I will learn a shortcut. Overall great unit for the money. Having the ability to take advantage of all types of media is very nice.

To keep it short and sweet, this radio has a lot of bells and whistles for the low price. Easy install with the adapter kit which is the only way to go. Bluetooth for your cell phone is the best feature. The sound is amazing.

    Pros: Easy install and Bluetooth.

    Cons: None

    Not Bad

Guy from Alameda, CA on 4/29/2013

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Not a bad unit. I replaced a Panasonic CQ-C9700U that had worn out. The Panasonic had a far superior display. Including the ability to program your own images for startup and power off. Also all settings were available from the Panasonic Remote. The JVC has limited control via the remote. If you want to listen to radio stations this is not the receiver for you. Getting to the radio station presets is a sequential pain in that area you sit on. The bluetooth does work well in the environment that I have it installed in (not a car). The USB options are normal nothing special or extraordinary there. There is available an additional cable which allows you to have two aux inputs on the back. It works well with the cable, and turning it on in the menu system. I have two aux devices and selecting between them easily is nice. After I first installed it I thought I had made an error in choosing JVC over some of the other recievers. A big part of that feeling was that it looks clunky, and I am not normally all that concerned with mobile audio aesthetics. After having it for a while, I like the way that it sounds. (I can't tell a difference between it and that Panasonic that it replaced.)

Pros: Sounds good once set up. Good Bluetooth sound quality.

Cons: Cheesy plastic looking face Flimsy feeling buttons Very limited Remote functionality. Station Selection on Radio Virtually Impossible in any meaningful way. You can scroll through a list of 18 FM presets or "Autosearch". Iphone control is limited.

    More than I had hoped

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This stereo was all I had hoped for and more. I originally wanted a discontinued Digital Media Receiver by JVC but they were out of stock before I pulled the trigger. The relationship with Kenwood is clear in the quality of the sound over older JVC's and I just can't say enough about the value packed into this unit. Crutchfield customer service was exceptional as always. In this case I purchase a scratch and dent that ended up with a dead microphone input. They shipped a NEW unit even before the RMA was processed at no extra charge.

Pros: Excellent Bluetooth streaming of Pandora and even Slacker. Great sound quality. Flexible defined set EQ. Dual USB jacks

Cons: User interface is not intuitive but is not a steep learning curve. Bluetooth pairing takes almost a minute in some cases. USB connections are cables and not female jacks which limit flexibility if the radio cavity on your car is tight.

    Great unit, not perfect

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have had this head unit for about 5 months now, and it still works as well as it did out of the box. However, I am having a minor problem where it will not automatically connect to my phone via Bluetooth. I do not believe it is the head unit, however, as it connects to everything else no problem. Overall, a great unit for a good price.

Pros: iPod interface, multi line display, Bluetooth

Cons: Glossy display can cause glare and be hard to read if the sun is at the right angle. Adjusting volume while playing audio from iPhone app such as YouTube causes playback to stop and volume to go to 0

Great! Sent back Aplone and so happy about it!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just great. Sent back an Alpine 133BT and so happy I did. I was a little apprehensive about a JVC. But after talking with the Crutchfield Advisor, I am so glad I did. This one WORKS WITH SPOTIFY! Full display of artist, song, and album. Also allows ability to control track (even on Spotify) from the deck.

Pros: Spotify, no cd drive shown, huge range of colors to pick from for display, great on calls, rapid USB charger (not in front of stereo, so it's looks much better)

Cons: Can not select album in Spotify from unit - everything else is great

I purchased this unit to replace my older JVC headunit because I wanted hands free calling and Bluetooth audio streaming. Aside from the great sound and features, my favorite thing about this headunit is the can be setup to look more like stock. The variable illumination allows you to match your factory dials and there are no tacky animations on the screen. The overall design is fairly sedate and it looks nice installed. Overall I really like this stereo. Here are my impressions after a week of use:

Pros: Good sound, really makes the most of the factory speakers, hands free calling works well with my Android phone, rear USBs / AUX keeps things clean, variable button/screen colors to match your car, 4-line display, understated design / no tacky animations, USB port charges most phones and iPods, lots of customizable settings, Bluetooth connects quickly with my phone, can pair two phones, pushing volume knob mutes audio, detachable faceplate with case

Cons: Bluetooth module takes up a USB port, no HD radio or ability to add the function, the source bottom is awkwardly placed above the volume knob, the volume know feels sturdy but is a tiny bit to shallow, display is not black and white like the photo

    Good but lacking

Bruce from Philadelphia, PA on 1/7/2013

My wife asked me what I wanted for Christmas this year and I told her a new radio for my car. The old radio's buttons would stick in the cold, plus I wanted something with bluetooth and an ipod connection. Installation wasn't bad but I did have a couple problems. The screw holes on the dash adapter were too small for some of the screws. I broke two of the holes before I realized what was going on. I went to the hardware store and got a few screws in a smaller size which helped from destroying the adapter completely. I also had a question with the wiring, but after a 10 minute phone call to the Crutchfield helpline I was up and running. As for the actual radio, it is nice, but not without its flaws. It has a clean minimal layout, but I miss some extra buttons. Changing to a preset now takes 2-3 presses. The ipod part is a little lacking. It won't read your ipod if you attach a usb extension. This means I can't run it to my armrest console. If you scroll faster than like 1 click per second you are taken to a quick search mode. Sounds great if it enabled you to scroll through the names or use the alphabet, but instead it uses numbers. How am I supposed to know that Pantera is the 535th band out off 742 on my ipod? I don't get it. The call quality was good My wife heard me fine. It came with a remote which my son loves. He has been tormenting me from the backseat for the last 2 days. Overall it is a 3.5 which could sway either way depending on how it grows on me.

Pros: usb port, good sound quality with bluetooth, multi line display with display options.

Cons: Ipod control, button layout takes a little getting used to

I've always preferred JVC and the KD-R80BT is no exception.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This media player is great. Radio sounds great. I'm not sure if this device has a built in FM amplifier or not, but this unit picks up my favorite radio station way better than my old receiver did. I really like the text display. The sound quality is supurb. As for Bluetooth. Well, so long CD's. Streaming music through my Galaxy media player is so much better. Or if I forget to charge the battery on my media player, I'll just plug in my 32GB Flash drive :) Overall I am once again very pleased with JVC. Great product and I highly recommend it.

    Pros: Everything :)

Cons: It wouldn't install itself. Seriously though, if I had to give a con, I suppose it would be that the bluetooth receiver isn't built in and the unit doesn't accept flash cards. Bah, who cares about that. USB drives are awesome. Bluetooth is awesome. This whole receiver is awesome. JVC is awesome. Cons=Zip, natta, nill, zero, ziltch, non-exsistant, null, void, jack diddly....

    Poor Human Interface

BMcNurlan from Monterey, CA on 11/15/2012

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

What a shame. This could have been such a good product. Shame on JVC for not sweating the details. First off: the good stuff. The BlueTooth is rock solid with my phone. Voice quality is great for both the mic pickup and for the voice that is put out on the speakers. Steering wheel controls work great. So does the satellite connection. With the 24 bit DAC, the sound is spectacular. Now for the bad stuff: 1) The display is NOT as black or as white as is shown on the picture. I have fiddled with it and the contrast just won't match the picture. Be aware that it is LCD, NOT a flourescent type display. 2) The display gets washed out in bright light. 3) In satellite radio mode, JVC really, really dropped the ball. Only one of the three display modes will show the channel number that you are on. And in that one instance, the channel number is tiny and at the very bottom of the screen. 3) While you can create a favorites list, it is not intuitive as to how you get to it. You have to press the menu button, then press volume adjusting button (behaves as the enter button), then you press the enter button again on a submenu. Then you scroll through your list of favorite channels by rotating the volume button clockwise or counter-clockwise. There's nothing intuitive about that. 4) The time display keeps alternating between the local time zone and UTC (or Greenwich Mean Time). Since when does a car radio display UTC and why can't I turn that non-sense off? 5) More...

Pros: Solid, very high sound quality. I really am impressed with it and I am picky. There's A LOT of musical detail that this deck highlights. It has solid BlueTooth, remote steering wheel control interface (optional) and satellite (optional) and iPod connections (plug in an Apple cable into the USB port for full control). Again, the backend is GREAT.

Cons: The interface stinks. The menus are a big, huge grind. It's an involved process (driving distraction) to get to the category and channel that you want. Previously had the Alpine iDA-x305S. It died and I now very deeply regret not buying that same deck again. Ironically, it costs less than this one. I would pay more. Unless you really enjoy complex menus that will pull your attention away from the important task of driving your car, don't buy this. It's not worth an accident.

Good sound, but poorly implemented extra features

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was one of the few single-DIN units that had what I wanted: multi-line display, rear AUX for headrest monitors, bluetooth streaming / calling, android compatibility, and high-powered sub outputs. I intended to power my stock speakers from the receiver then buy a sub down the road. Sound quality was pretty good through my stock speakers, a noticible improvement over the stock receiver. I was getting a little antsy, so I jumped the gun and went ahead and bought a used amplified Bazooka bass tube (BTA8100). Glad I did or else I wouldn't have noticed the problem... my sub preamps were basically worthless. I hooked up the Bazooka, but even with the gain on its amplifier all the way up and the sub level on the JVC at max, I was getting more sound / bass from my stock door speakers! At first I thought it was a problem with the Bazooka, but tested it hooked up to an iPhone via RCAs and it hit fine. Played with every setting in the JVC to no avail. Called Crutchfield. They recommended I try the Front / Rear outputs on the unit. Those worked great! Even when the volume on the JVC was only turned up to only 15 (of 50) it was rattling stuff off my front seat! They sent me out a replacement which had the exact same problem. They recommended I call JVC, but in doing some research online it appears this is a complaint on several JVC models and is usually denied by JVC.

Pros: Good sound to Front / Rear speakers. Lots of features. Easy to install. Logical menu navigation. Purchased from Crutchfield: Good customer service and return policy. The unit does control playback on my Droid Razr, buttons for control are different depending on which player you are in: sometimes "Play / Pause" is center-clicking the knob, other times, single-clicking "Menu". Other times center-click is Mute.

Cons: **WEAK SUB PREAMPS** Bluetooth call quality was definitely lacking. I had to find the menu to turn up the gain on the microphone to make it at all usable for calls. Most people have a hard time hearing me and say I don't sound very "natural". Bluetooth takes a good 30 seconds to connect to my phone after starting the car.

It complements my vehicle well and gives a better sound when it comes to listening to the radio or using Pandora. I do recommend this model to anyone.

product is designed to work like its stated, blue tooth, telephone, iPod, answering calls works great. plain and simple!

Pros: The features that is has cd, fm, am, blue tooth, etc.

Cons: The only complaint i say is the button selection, to choose what type of media the button is very tiny and the location is terrible, or they call it source. Its as if your using a stylis to access that button.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this for several reasons: bluetooth handsfree calling, full pandora control, rear aux input. Turns out that the bluetooth works pretty decently. I've only had to reboot my phone 1 time to get Pandora to pop up. Usually it will connect to my phone within 30 seconds (android samsung nexus s 4G running ice cream sandwich). The cd player is pretty quick to read disks. The display is bright and allows for tons of color combinations. It came with an extra usb input and a case for the faceplate. installation and setup was a snap all around. Setting up a decent EQ is difficult because its only a 3 band EQ, it really tends to muddy up the audio.

Pros: I really like the volume knob, seems to be solid aluminum with a knurled grip on the edges. mine was slightly sharp, be careful or use a file if needed I love how you can deactivate inputs. I wish I could turn off FM radio and just have BT1 and aux in, but no big deal shows the phone antenna signal strength and battery on the display pushing the volume knob will mute the audio, surprisingly this is a somewhat hard to come by feature I love how how the pandora station menu loads up quickly

Cons: outgoing audio from the handsfree bluetooth is pretty bad. people complained that I sounded muffled and inside of a tin can. you have to dig through a menu to switch from bluetooth audio to pandora. by default it is on bluetooth audio and it doesn't always save the setting to switch to pandora automatically the source button is in a bad spot pandora will distort for 1/4 of a second, 3 seconds into a new song almost every time 3 band EQ, I need to put on the HPF or else the audio clips

    Built-in Bluetooth

USB Bluetooth Adapter: The JVC KD-R80BT comes supplied with a USB Bluetooth Adapter (KS-UBT1) which is pre-installed into the head unit's rear-panel USB 1 input, making the KD-R80BT Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR certified. The KD-R80BT supports Bluetooth hands-free communication and wireless audio streaming. The USB Bluetooth Adapter (KS-UBT1) must remain plugged into the rear-panel USB 1 port, or can also be installed in the head unit's rear-panel USB 2 port.

Bluetooth Technology: Bluetooth is a two-way wireless communication system allowing you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, as well as wirelessly stream audio from your Bluetooth enabled portable music player using the JVC in-dash CD receiver. Bluetooth wireless technology operates on a 2.4GHZ frequency band within a range of approximately 10 meters (about 33 feet).

Bluetooth Profiles: In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

    • Hands-Free Communication: HFP (Hands Free Profile), OPP (Object Push Profile), PBAB (Phone Book Access Profile).
    • Audio Streaming: A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).

Pairing: Your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone or digital audio player must be paired with KD-R80BT before hands-free & wireless operation. You can register up to five Bluetooth enabled devices with the JVC head unit. You can keep two phones connected at all times (only one can be used during a call).

Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the JVC head unit. See JVC's Bluetooth compatibility chart for a complete list of compatible Bluetooth enabled devices.

External Microphone: The JVC KD-R80BT includes an external microphone to carry on your side of your phone conversation and voice command dialing. The external wired microphone offers improved audio quality versus an integrated microphone, so you can be heard easier over noisy traffic and road noise. You can adjust the level of the microphone without affecting the other sources. The external microphone features an attached 12' cable terminated by a right-angle 3.5mm connector which plugs into the mic input on the rear-panel of the head unit. The microphone offers an integrated mounting bracket which can be clipped to your vehicle's sun-visor or taped to your dash. The external microphone measures 0.525" (diameter) x 1.485" (depth). This unit does not offer an integrated front-panel microphone.

Bluetooth Hands-Free Communication: The head unit supports Bluetooth hands-free communication for your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone. The controls of the KD-R80BT can be used to dial a number, answer an in-coming call, or end a call. The unit also includes an external microphone (with mounting bracket) featuring adjustable gain, so you can carry on your side of the conversation while listening to the caller through your vehicles speakers (front or all). During a conversation, you can switch between the Private Mode (talking directly on your cell phone) and the Hands Free Mode.

    • Answering A Call: When a call comes in, a ring-tone will be heard through your vehicle's speaker, the head unit's display will flash (Ring Color), and the caller's name or phone number will be displayed. You can answer the call from the KD-R80BT's front-panel controls, or setup the head unit to automatically answer the incoming call. You can adjust the head unit's ring color from the unit's 29 preset colors or 30,000 custom colors.
    • Dialing A Number: Using the KD-R80BT, you can dial a phone number in one of the following ways:
      • Entering a Phone Number: Allows you to directly dial a phone number up to 32 digits from the head unit's front-panel rotary dial.

    Audio Section

24 Bit D/A Converter: The JVC KD-R80BT utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior CD sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The KD-R80BT is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the KD-R80BT are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the KD-R80BT are as follows:

    • CEA2006 Specs: 20 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (200 total watts)

Amplifier Gain Control: When you are using the KD-R80BT with factory speakers (or those rated to less than 50 watts peak), the Amplifier Gain Control can limit the amount of power being sent to those speakers. When the Amp Gain Control is set to "low," the volume control ranges from 0 (minimum) to 30 (maximum). When using speakers rated higher than 50 watts peak, you can set the Amp Gain Control to "high," and the volume control will range from 0 to 50.

Volume Adjust: The input level of each source (other than FM) is adjustable relative to the FM radio volume, so there isn't a significant volume difference when changing sources. Each source is individually adjustable from -5 to +5.

Pro EQ: The KD-R80BT is equipped with JVC's Pro EQ. The integrated equalizer offers 7 preset sound modes (Flat, Natural, Dynamic, Vocal Boost, Bass Boost, User) suitable for the music genre of your choice. The User mode allows you to manually adjust the head unit's 3-band parametric EQ (Frequency, Level, and Q-Factor).

    Pro EQ
    Frequency Level Q
    Bass 60, 80, 100, 200 Hz +/- 12 dB (-6 to +6) 1.0, 1.25, 1.5, 2.0
    Midrange 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.5 kHz +/- 12 dB (-6 to +6) 0.75, 1.0, 1.25
