Overview

Our take on the JVC KD-R950BT

JVC's KD-R950BT CD receiver lets you customize the illumination color in three different areas of the faceplate for any combinations you can think of. Smartphone integration

Bluetooth serves as a wireless bridge between your smartphone and this JVC. Once you pair up this JVC with your smartphone, you can harness Bluetooth's full potential — you'll be able to receive text message notifications, stream the stored music on your phone, or access Internet radio stations, depending on your phone's features. iPhone® users can even communicate with Siri without picking up the phone.

If you enjoy Internet radio on your smartphone, you'll really enjoy playing music from Pandora® and iHeart Radio® on this great-sounding receiver. You can scroll through your stations, bookmark songs, and give a thumbs-up or thumbs-down right from the receiver's face. Load JVC's Smart Music Control app and you get access to your receiver's settings, illumination, EQ, and sources directly from your smartphone.

Added cool stuff

JVC upped the power in their USB port, which lets you keep your smartphone charged, even when it's doing several tasks at once. Drive Change allows you to connect a memory card reader or USB hub to the receiver's USB input and select music from up to five memory cards or USB flash drives. You can also connect just about any portable audio player using the KD-R950BT's front aux input.

Once you're playing what you want, shape your sound with the onboard 5-band parametric equalizer. If you're adding amplifiers or a powered subwoofer, the two sets of 2.5-volt preamp outputs provide you the clean signal you need.

Want to keep your steering wheel controls?

In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this JVC stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the JVC, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

App Note: iHeartRadio playback and control requires the "iHeartRadio Link for JVC" app on your smartphone.

iPod/smartphone note: If you're going to use your iPod or smartphone with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for compatibility information.

A lot of receiver for the money

    2001 GMC Yukon XL
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this to upgrade from the stock stereo in my 2001 GMC Yukon. The install kit made it pretty easy. I didn't realize the truck had an onboard amp that needed power also. The Crutchfield Tech Support team walked me through it without issue. I'm very impressed with all this receiver's features and user interface (UI) settings. I've been looking for a receiver without a ton of buttons that my wife could easily operate and didn't look too out of place in the old truck and this one is the best I've found. I would highly recommend it.

Pros: A ton of features and display options, very easy to use once initial setup is complete, 31 display color options and one that even matched the truck's odometer, you can even shutoff the beep sounds when buttons are pressed or radio channels are changed, bluetooth works great, day/night dimmer setting is nice.

Cons: Ships with Demo mode on, equalizer controls are buried in menu system.

    Great Receiver

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this to upgrade the stock stereo in my 2001 Jeep Wrangler. One of the main features I was looking for was the Bluetooth connectivity to my iPhone. Since my Jeep has a manual transmission it's very difficult to talk and drive. I've very impressed with this unit and would highly recommend it.

Pros: The wired microphone and Bluetooth connectivity works great. Even going topless in the Jeep I can use the phone at speeds up to 40 mph before it gets difficult for the person on the other end of the call to hear. Easy to install and use. Lots of functions.

    Cons: none so far.

    Awesome buy!

    2002 Toyota Echo
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this to replace my factory Toyota stereo in my 2002 Echo. The kit and instructions from Crutchfield made the process easy, as usual. I've been driving around with it for several weeks now. Overall, I am very impressed with the unit, and it is a *huge* upgrade from the stock unit, but there are a few "cons" one might want to be aware of. Crisp, clear sound over Bluetooth! On the "con" side, as other have mentioned, the meaning system here is not really intuitive at all. Even once you know how to navigate it, it takes far too many button presses and knob turns to change the equalizer from one appropriate to a podcast, say, to one appropriate for loud music. Without reading the manual, I would never ever have guessed that the way to play/pause audio from the Bluetooth source is to press the "menu" button (!!!), but once I found that out it has been a dream to use to control what is playing. The included microphone is slightly crippled by a cheap "stand"/clip. I double-sided-taped it to my steering column, which works okay, but since it only rotates instead of having a ball joint like the one that comes with Pioneer stereos, it is aimed more at my forehead than my mouth. Still, it seems to pick up audio quite well. I did have two instances where, when I answered an incoming phone call by pressing my phone's answer button, the BT audio played *over the phone call*. Moral: don't use the phone interface if the radio's buttons will do it.

Pros: * Reliable Bluetooth connectivity (~30 seconds to connect after startup) * Easy to match color and brightness to day and night (lights on) dashboard illumination * Automatically dims when lights are on * Bluetooth audio works really well for me, much clearer than I had expected * Phone calls and voice control work flawlessly with the included microphone

Cons: * Equalizer controls are buried in menu system * Lights have two settings, don't connect to the "variable" dimmer knob * Microphone "stand" only rotates (the one with my wife's Pioneer has a ball joint making it much easier to aim) * Bluetooth automatically starts playing after using voice dictate on phone * Bluetooth has started playing while phone is being used * 1 Amp USB socket is underpowered for charging modern devices, but I haven't seen any better.

This my second JVC receiver this year! If I had a third vehicle I would buy one for it. Very pleased with the quality and ease of installation and use. Love it! Everything I needed came with purchase. Don't buy anywhere but Crutchfield period.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this to replace the stock radio in a 1999 Volvo V70, leaving the stock speakers that came with the vehicle. The original radio had a terrible reception, and when a radio station was tuned in well, had horrible sound. So I was worried that just changing the radio wouldn't fix all the problems I had with the sound. Installation was a breeze with the included wiring harness and dash kit. Setup is extremely intuitive with this model. The color display and editing options with the three zones leave more options than one could possibly need. The sound, even with my stock speakers, is amazing. I am dumbfounded that the stock speakers, aged 15 years, could sound as amazing as they do with this radio. BlueTooth setup and use is fantastic with our iPhone 5's and 6's. First time JVC car radio purchaser, and now I am strong fan!

Pros: Easy installation, intuitive setup, fanstastic BlueTooth, amazing sound. The price makes this a very good deal!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this unit for my 16-year old daughter's first car - it's over ten years old and I wanted her to have the hands-free and bluetooth technology so she wouldn't be tempted to use her cell on the road. The installation was easy enough - one call needed to tech to verify a connection (and they were great). The settings are a little in depth, but the instructions are very clear and easy to follow - it just takes a few steps to get to where you need to be. All in all worth it though - there are so many options with this unit. So it can be changed to suit your mood or personality - obviously huge for a 16 year old girl!

    Pros: All around great unit!

Cons: Takes a few steps to get the set up complete - there are a ton of options! Overall worth the extra steps for sure.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a really great stereo for the price. The bluetooth works very well, and installing the mic wasn't too difficult (once i realized that the sound was best if it was up by the sun visor and not on the steering column). The interface is pretty easy and user friendly. What i'm not so keen on is how "sharp" the edges are on the radio preset buttons. An odd choice for an otherwise slick design.

Pros: Ease of use. Bluetooth is fantastic. Color change features are great. Most colors are easily visible during daylight hours. Sound choices are great.

Cons: Buttons for radio presets are sharp at the edges. Need a bit more intensive tweaking to get the high-end clear on playback.

    Great stereo!

rawr from Kapolei, HI on 7/9/2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I really enjoy this stereo! My car's stock stereo (in a 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix) died so I decided to go with the JVC KD-R950BT based on (1) brand name, (2) price, (3) what seemed like ease of use from watching the Crutchfield video, and (4) color changing panel (the R850BT is the same thing but has an only blue panel and my car's dashboard's lights are red). I had to do some shaving down on some of the plastic in the car, because the installation kit was a tad wide, but other than that it was easy to install. I have a Nokia Lumia 920 running Windows Phone 8.1, so the IPHONE/IPOD (and possibly IPAD?) linking is out of the question but connectivity works just fine. I can switch songs, mute, answer calls using Bluetooth, read a song's metadata on-screen and charge the phone through the USB output in the stereo. Being able to fully control the phone's music by switching genre/artist/album/playlist through the stereo would be fantastic, but that is a function limited to IPHONE/IPOD. Overall I am really satisfied with this stereo. I wanted something easy to use, and that is what this stereo delivers. Also, 5 stars to Crutchfield for shipping and customer service! Not only did they send all the parts I needed to complete the installation, but the directions were sent by email, and the company shipped all the parts together for free from Virginia to Hawai?i and it arrived in 2 days. Many retailers don't ship merchandise here because of shipping costs, so this was fantastic

Very good unit for the money. I brought 2 JVC's to install this time around. Enjoying both.

Pros: Had a very easy install, used this unit to replace an older Alpine stereo, so I got to use the old adaptors all ready installed. Unit has very easy controls to use and understand. And features are good for the money. Unit is attached to an 11 yr old California amp, still sounds great.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This product was very easy to install. The manual made it very easy to set-up and use. I was able to install the unit within an hour and most of that time was used to splice the wire harnesses together. The color options on the displays give you a lot different looks to choose from if you want to match the interior of the vehicle or just be creative. The controls are very instinctive and this device had all the options I was looking for.

Pros: A lot of color choices. Allthe bells and whistles I wanted at a reasonable price. Easy installation.

Cons: Radio signals seem a little weaker than with the factory unit.

Fiance bought this for meas an early Father's day gift since it had all the features I was looking for to upgrade my factory 2001 Tacoma radio. Sounds great after installing and now I'm debating on whether to upgrade my factory speakers too!! Love the Bluetooth feature so that now I can listen to what I want, when I want, instead of relying on radio stations to provide entertainment. Best thing is that I can control Pandora from the head unit without having to pick up phone. Great feature!

Pros: Customization of face plate colors, Pandora & Bluetooth controls

    Cons: Face dim in sunlight

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I really like the radio. I use the Pandora feature a lot for music and I like that I can like/dislike right from the radio, no looking at my phone for that. I also like the multi-color settings for the radio itself. Having a bluetooth connection allows for everyone in the car to have a chance to control the music too(parents beware)! Finally the call quality is pretty good too. Having the mic setup right on the steering column makes it easy to be heard, and having the speakers in the car makes it very easy to hear the person on the line. However there is no private conversations so also beware of that when there are passengers in the car with you(it would be courteous to the caller to let them know too).

Pros: hands free talking bluetooth music selections Pandora compatible plays CDs

    Cons: none really for me

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is the fourth JVC unit I've installed in our "fleet" over the past four years. So everything was very familiar and comfortable. This 950 is a vast improvement over the OEM -cassette- stereo in my Crown Vic, even with no amp and using the stock, non-premium speakers. It has all the Bluetooth, USB, RDS, iPod comparability, and CD/MP3 features that I wanted; along with pre-amp outs and such. Lots of little buttons and detailed settings can be figured out with a little exploration....I do not care for the sharp reliefs on the pre-set buttons...they hurt my digits. And for those old curmudgeons who don't like the colors and flashy glitz, the three separate zones can all be set to the same color and even matched to your vehicle's OEM dash/instrument's color.

Pros: Great value...lots of features for the price JVC familiarity and dependability Bling & Glam

Cons: Bling & Glam Small buttons Sharp, pointy pre-set buttons

Nice stereo at a great price!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My stereo was stolen from my vehicle, so I found myself unexpectedly shopping for a new one. I knew that I wanted a CD player with IPOD controls and bluetooth connectivity to my android phone, mainly to play Pandora. While the specific Pandora function is for the ipod/iphone, connecting to an Android and running Pandora still seems to work well. It looks great and it can use many many combinations of colors for the display and buttons. I was also very happy that I was able to find all the features I wanted in a stereo of this price! Great stereo and great bargain.

Pros: Great price for a unit that is heavy on features. Cool lighting options. Good sound quality. Good looking stereo. Comes with remote.

Cons: The Pandora feature is designed for Iphone/ipod. Should accommodate Android.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I replaced my factory stereo in my 02 Silverado with this receiver and I have been very impressed. It sounds great even with my factory speakers. The Bluetooth works great with my Galaxy S4. The call quality is much better than my wife's Sony that cost three times more. I run Pandora on my half hour drive to and from work and don't even have to take my phone off my belt when I get in. I Love the color options on the display. I've already talked my dad and my boss to get one of these for their trucks. As always Crutchfield knocked it out of the park. Fast shipping, had to call tech support for a simple install question and the associate was very helpful.

Pros: Tons of features, works great with androids, great price

Cons: The menus take some getting used to. Plan on spending some time "playing" with it.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm quite impressed with Crutchfield. Ordered quite a few items on a Tuesday and got it on a Thursday early afternoon. Customer service is a great selling point too as a customer. Tim worked within my budget and put a cart list for me of items i would need and i couldn't be more pleased! I can see why some reviews mention that this JVC unit isn't super user friendly to use (access wise on your user presets and EQ, though the remote control does come in handy at this part if you're not too familiar with audio eq'ing). This little unit is pretty awesome with Bluetooth playback and hands free calling and i was actually surprised how good it made my car stock speakers sound like. I also purchased the Polk Audio db 651s 6-1/2" Slim 2-way Speakers and Kicker 41DSC684 6" x 8" 2-Way Speakers that i plan to install when i have a little more time (The instructions for a first timer isn't the best, and removing the manual crank is actually a lot harder to do, even with an universal tool for the c-clip... if anyone has tips, i'll take it! ). The installation process was super easy and quick (less than 45 min to install while having a beer:) and the Crutchfield instructions were helpful (Reading the JVC wiring manual made it clearer). Highly recommend it for a great value; price wise and quality wise.

Pros: The Sound quality is impressive. The customer service and products from Crutchfield are top notch.

Cons: None what so ever. I'll buy from them again.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great bang for your buck head unit! Blue tooth feature works flawlessly. It connects to your phone automatically and displays artist name and track title. A surprising feature is you can skip songs right on the head unit itself without ever having to touch your phone. If you use pandora, song info comes up on the head unit as well. And yup you guessed it, you can also skip pandora tracks on the head unit too. Downside is if you're using other music apps, the display won't show any track info. No biggie though. Lights on the display are a cool feature. Lots of different patterns and colors to choose from. For around a hundred bucks.. GO GET IT!!

Pros: Blue tooth feature Ease of install Pandora compatibility

Cons: None that I can think of.

Installed in 2002 Ford Sportrac and 1995 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am, removed factory stereos which just weren't cutting it anymore. Updated the sound and looks in both vehicles, plus, connectivity with our phones! Very happy.

Pros: Great sound, customizable colors and lights, easy pairing with devices AND they stay connected, no dropping.

Cons: The manual just sucks. Difficult to understand and follow, lots of time to customize each stereo to my and the Wife's wants and needs. Eventually, you'll do it.

This CD player does pretty much everything as described. The Bluetooth feature is awesome and the hands free calling is very convenient. It has so many different color options it's hard to decide which one to set it on. One thing I disliked is that every time you plug your phone into the USB port it will turn it off of Bluetooth mode and switch itself to iPod mode automatically which disrupts the music. Not a big deal I just switch it back and all is well. The Bluetooth pairing is pretty simple to use and setting the clock and equalizer is also very easy. Overall it is a very good value and I would recommend it to anyone.

Pros: Easy to set up, color options, Bluetooth

Cons: iPod mode when hooked up to USB

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This radio replaced the factory radio in a 2007 Ford 500 Limited which had the six disk, six speaker system. Zack, my Crutchfield advisor told me that an adapter was needed because my vehicle's six speaker system had the sub woofers. All the components, including the installation adapter went together very easily. This radio is ten times better than the factory radio and now I can actually hear the sub woofers punching out the base. The radio is easy to control, the blue tooth for the cell phone works great, the connection for my MP3 player connects easily, the remote control is nice, and it's a great radio for those on a budget who want a great stereo that beats factory equipment. The provided installation kit makes the radio look like a factory install.

Pros: Easy to install with the include kit. Great sound with the factory speakers. Looks like it's a factory radio. I couldn't ask for more for a reasonable price and features.

Cons: Nothing. It looks great, sounds great, was an easy install.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

34year old business professional decided to try my own install job. The JVC KD-R950BT has been a hit for me over the weekend while driving on a short 2 hour trip to our favorite vacation spot. I ordered the unit Monday night and had it by Wednesday afternoon. The U pins to remove my factory radio from my 2002 Escape make it very easy to pull out of the dash. The radio and free Crutchfield accessories made it a piece of cake to install for a 1st timer. A limbo under the steering wheel made it possible to install the Bluetooth mic. The wiring harness matched easily with factory adapter and plugged perfectly into the radio just like it should. I plugged in the antenna and filed down the dash opening about 1/4" like the Crutchfield instructions told me. I attached the rear support a the same height as my factory radio and everything snapped into place. It looks great and synced on the first try with my IPhone 5s. I've had 2 other JVC radios in the past, this is the most sophisticated so far, and a great bargain as all JVCs are. The sound quality instantly improved over my factory radio and now I can Bluetooth phone calls and music directly through the radio or charge it while using the front USB plug.

    Pros: Color selection in 3 zones; sound quality; features; price; ease of install; Bluetooth sound quality;

Cons: Have to use the USB cord in the radio's Pandora and iHeartRadio modes with the iPhone 5s (or any iPhone) - however both can work using the phone's App and the radio's Bluetooth mode. - Loss of 1 star for that, and for not having a EQ button, and changing colors is not difficult, but a bit of a task..

Cons: The pro eq is a bit of a puzzle if you are not familiar with frequencies and ringing systems out but there are the preset eq settings and An easy eq.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Easy installation on my 2004 Ford F150 Crew Cab. I used the Crutchfield wiring kit. Took about an hour to solder and heat shrink the wiring, then about 20 minutes to do the installation in the truck. I had pulled the stock radio the night before, that took about 20 minutes. I drilled a small hole in the round metal cross member inside the radio area of the dash to add a ground screw. That actually took the longest to do, as the metal was really hard or my drill bit was dull (I think it was a new bit).

Pros: Easy install. Bluetooth. USB. Not too hard to figure out how to operate.

Cons: Green color for center display area isn't bright enough during the day to read easily.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The JVC stereo I bought for my car was fairly easy to install. The only difficult part was soldering the adapter plug to the harness, but even that went well and worked fine. The frame fit the dash perfectly and the radio installation went very smoothly. This was my first radio install in 20 years and it is so much easier than it used to be. I would highly recommend using this product in any vehicle.

Pros: Easy installation, lots of features at a reasonable price, convenient remote , nearly infinite color choices even though I'm old fashioned and only use one.

Cons: Cumbersome set up menu but there doesn't seem to be a good way to have a convenient interface with a small display radio. Detachable faceplate sometimes will not stay latched so I may use the screw that was included in the kit to attach it permanently, which defeats the purpose of the security feature.

I purchased this to install into my wives 2004 x-terra. The stereo came in as expected and in good condition. It was true to the description and to its features. This install was relatively easy. Thank you to Crutchfield for the extra steps included in the purchase. Once I had everything put back together it actually looks like a factory install. I was impressed with how things turned out. Overall it is a huge improvement over the factory stereo, programming it was ok and our 11 yr old son took it off demo mode and programmed the stations, the colors including day and night. Kids!

Pros: Thank you Crutchfield for the kit and wiring harness which are certainly needed. Thankfully connecting the wires was pretty straightforward although keep in mind you may not need to use all of them. Start with the easy ones first which would be the speakers.

Cons: A little worried about removing the trim and wished Crutchfield would have included a video of sorts or something like this but it was easy to find doing a Google search. Once seeing the video it made more sense and was more confident to proceed. This by no means to not try the install yourself, just look, research and be ready. The remote is way too small for a medium to large hand. Seems to be ok for my wife though.

Bluetooth Technology: The JVC KD-R950BT is equipped with built-in Bluetooth (version 2.1+EDR), allowing you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

    • Hands-Free Communication: HFP 1.5 (Hands Free Profile), OPP 1.1 (Object Push Profile), PBAB 1.0 (Phone Book Access Profile).
    • Audio Streaming: A2DP 1.2 (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP 1.3 (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the JVC KD-R950BT. See JVC's Bluetooth compatibility chart for a complete list of compatible Bluetooth enabled devices.

Secure Simple Pairing (SSP): With Secure Simple Pairing (SSP), you can easily pair a Bluetooth enabled phone to the JVC KD-R950BT without having to enter pin codes or go through complicated settings. When a paired Bluetooth device is in close proximity to the receiver, the auto connection function automatically pairs the two units. You can pair up to five Bluetooth-enabled devices to the JVC  head unit with a maximum of two Bluetooth phones and one Bluetooth audio player connected at one time (but only one can be used at a time).

Bluetooth Hands-Free Communication: The head unit supports Bluetooth hands-free communication for your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone. The controls of the KD-R950BT can be used to dial a number, answer an in-coming call, or end a call. The unit also includes an external microphone (with mounting bracket) featuring adjustable gain, so you can carry on your side of the conversation while listening to the caller through your vehicles speakers. During a conversation, you can switch between the Private Mode (talking directly on your cell phone) and the Hands Free Mode.

    • Answering A Call: When a call comes in, a ring-tone will be heard through your vehicle's speaker and the caller's name or phone number will be displayed. You can also set the head unit's LCD to change colors when a phone call is received. You can answer the call from the head unit's front-panel controls, or setup the head unit to automatically answer the incoming call immediately or after 1-30 seconds. The KD-R950BT also supports the Call Waiting function, so you can answer another incoming call while suspending the current call you are on. Your compatible cell-phone must also support this feature.
    • Dialing A Number: Using the KD-R950BT, you can dial a phone number in one of the following ways:

    Audio Section

16 Bit D/A Converter: The JVC KD-R950BT utilizes a 16-bit digital to analog converter for superior sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The JVC KD-R950BT is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit. The power output specs for the KD-R950BT are as follows:

    • Full Bandwidth Power: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20-20kHz, 1% THD)
    • Maximum Output Power: 50 watts x 4 channels (200 total watts)
Note: When you are using the KD-R950BT with factory speakers (or those rated to less than 50 watts peak), the Amplifier Gain Control can limit the amount of power being sent to those speakers. When the Amp Gain Control is set to "low," the volume control ranges from 0 (minimum) to 30 (maximum). When using speakers rated higher than 50 watts peak, you can set the Amp Gain Control to "high," and the volume control will range from 0 to 50.

2.5V/4CH Preamp Output + Sub Control: The KD-R950BT is equipped with two pair of 2.5V preamp outputs (Front, Rear/SW). You can set the Rear/SW preamp outputs for connecting a pair of full-range rear speakers (through an external amplifier) or for connecting a subwoofer (through an external amplifier). When set for rear speakers, the rear outputs operate with the unit's fader control. When the unit's Rear/SW preamp output is set to Subwoofer, you can set the cutoff frequency of the low-pass filter at 55Hz, 85Hz, or 120Hz. You can also adjust the head unit's subwoofer level between -8 and +8 (separate from the main volume level).

High-Pass Filter (for Front & Rear Speakers): You can activate a variable high-pass filter (100, 120, 150, Hz or Through) for the unit's front & rear channels (speaker- or preamp-level), so low frequency signals are cut off from your system's front & rear speakers.

Pro EQ: The KD-R950BT is equipped with JVC's Pro EQ. The integrated equalizer offers 12 preset sound modes (Flat, Hard Rock, Jazz, Pop, R&B, Talk, vocal Boost, Bass Boost, Classical, Dance, User 1, or User 2) suitable for the music genre of your choice. The User modes allow you to manually adjust the head unit's 5-band parametric EQ (Frequency, Q-Factor, and Level).

    Pro EQ
    Frequency Q Level
    Bass 63, 80, 100, 125 Hz 1.0, 1.25, 1.5, 2.0 -10 to + 10
    Mid Bass 200, 250, 315, 400 Hz 1.0, 1.25, 1.5, 2.0
    Midrange 630, 800, 1.0k, 1.25k Hz 0.75, 1.0, 1.25, 2.0
    Mid High 2.0, 2.5, 3.15, 4.0 kHz 0.75, 1.0, 1.25, 2.0
    High 6.3, 8.0, 10.0, 12.5 kHz 0.75, 1.0, 1.25, 2.0
Note: You can store Pro EQ bass, middle and treble tone settings for each source (CD, AM/FM, Aux, USB, iPod, Pandora/iHeart Radio).

Sound Enhancements: The head unit provides further sound enhancements for your car audio system.

    • Digital Track Expander: The digital Track Expander automatically enhances compressed music files and restores the original richness of the recording.
    • Bass Boost: The unit's Bass Boost enhances low bass frequencies.
    • Loud (Loudness): This feature boosts low and high frequencies to produce a well-balanced sound at a low volume level. You can set this feature to High, Low, or Off.
    • Volume Adjust: The input level of each source (other than FM) is adjustable relative to the FM radio volume, so there isn't a significant volume difference when changing sources. Each source is individually adjustable from -5 to +5.

Key Beep: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

    Display Features

Detachable Face: The JVC KD-R950BT features a detachable face to deter theft. No face-case is provided. An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can be purchased for this unit. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.

3 Zone Variable Color: The head unit's variable color illumination is separated into 3 Zones (Zone 1, Display Zone, and Zone 2). Additionally, there is a User preset, allowing you to individually adjust the intensity of Red, Green, and Blue from 0 to 31; resulting in approximately 30,000 custom color options. You can choose to use the same color for all 3 Zones, or use a different color for each separate Zone.

    • Zone 1: Zone 1 consists of the rotary knob and the following buttons (Power/Source, Answer/Voice, Menu, Back, and Previous/Next Track).
    • Display Zone: The Display Zone consists of the LCD, preset buttons, and display button.
    • Zone 2: Zone 2 consists of the USB port and Aux input.

Lighting Effects + Color Guide: You can select a preset color change pattern/speed for all 3 Zones (Zone 1, Display Zone, and Zone 2). Choose from Spectrum, Groove, Techno, Emotion, Relax, and Night Sweep. When activated, the Color Guide mode changes the display and all button illumination to white when menu settings or music list search are performed.

Brightness & Dimmer Control: The unit offers a daytime and nighttime brightness setting for the LCD, button, and USB input terminal. You can adjust the brightness level of each zone manually from 0-31. The unit's dimmer control can be set automatically or manually; select "Off" for daytime brightness setting, "On" for nighttime brightness setting, or "Auto" which switches between day and nighttime brightness setting automatically when you turn off/on the headlights (orange/white wire of harness must be connected to headlamp circuit).

Day & Time: The unit displays a 12-or 24-hour clock, as well as the day (Sun/Mon/Tue/Wed/Thu/Fri/Sat). The day & time can be selected to remain on, even if the head unit is switched off (as long as the vehicle's key is in the accessory or start position).

Demo Mode: This unit features a Demo mode which can be turned On or Off within the menu.

    Great sound and value!

Written by Jude, Director, Digital Imaging, on 7/10/2014 9:25:00 AM
My son just purchased a newer car, a 2002 Pontiac Sunfire and the sound system it came with was, well, awful. We sat down together and planned a system and since he was on a budget we decided we would go with our house brand Sound Ordnance for most of it, and we are not disappointed. We installed the P65-C in the rear deck using the SA69 6X9 adapter. We then installed the P-40 in the front doors with fabricated brackets we made from the 12x12 sheet of ABS #1208900903 and then used the Dynamat #15410415 to seal it all up and add sound deadening to the doors. We chose the JVC KD-R950BT for the Bluetooth and the generous power the internal amplifier has, plus the abundant color choices made it easy to match the red backlighting in the Pontiac. We needed bass so we used the Sound Ordnance B-24 and the Rockford Fosgate #575P500X1B we had from his previous vehicle and connected it using the EFX 8 gauge wiring kit #142PA8. We spent a Sunday working on this project and have to say it exceeded my expectations on sound. It sounds clear, the bass hits as hard as you want and the total price was well within his budget. This is a great system and it was also a great day spent with my son.

with this stereo it does not automatically start play but I don't know about I phones I haven't had any issues with that I have a Samsung galaxy s4 [ STEVEN  Sep 16, 2014 ]
I'm pretty sure your issue is more phone related. I have a galaxy s4 and it automatically connects, but does not play. There is a setting in my phone that makes it automatically start playing when connected to an external audio device. [ BRIAN  Sep 15, 2014 ]
It only plays from the Bluetooth if that input is selected on the radio manually. Example: if I leave it on BT audio setting, turn off the key, it automatically pauses the iPhone. When the key is turned back on the radio does not begin playing from the Bluetooth input, I have to manually continue the playback via the phone touch screen interface or voice command feature on the iPhone. It works seamlessly with my phone and I have been very satisfied with its function. This radio comes with a wired microphone for taking voice commands and also for hands free cell phone calls through your stereo. [ LEE  Sep 15, 2014 ]
The phone will automatically pair but audio doesn't play until you hit the play button. This will not act like your pioneer. It should be fine. I also use an iPhone. [ RICHARD  Sep 14, 2014 ]
Can this unit pair two phones simultaneously? For instance pair both my personal and work phone? [ Nance  Oct 02, 2014 ]

I've set the colors and they are awesome, really great look and they dont go crasy you can set the zones to do what you want [ CHARLES T  Sep 05, 2014 ]
look in your instruction manual and follow the directions for changing the units colors. You're in demo mode most likely at the moment. I had to do this on my deck. [ NANCY  Sep 03, 2014 ]
I don't know about slower fading but you CAN pick a color for the entire face to match the color the rest of your dashboard. I was able to match the JVC unit to the red that all my instruments show on my 3series BMW. [ ANTHONY  Sep 03, 2014 ]
Paulboy, I have a Samsung and my phone automatically connects to my radio within about 2 min. after I turn the radio on. [ RON  Jun 20, 2014 ]
As long as your bluetooth is turned on, it will automatically connect for phone audio and music. I have the s4, and it works great with this head unit [ BRIAN  Jun 20, 2014 ]
My son's iPod pairs automatically. I've never tried an android device though. It's a very nice radio I've really enjoyed it. [ LEE  Jun 20, 2014 ]
I have an LG G2 , once you are paired it recognizes your phone whenever you enter or within range. Love it [ ROBERT  Jun 20, 2014 ]

I have an Iphone 4s and I paired it once. I leave my bluetooth turned on all the time on my phone. When I start the car, it takes about 10 seconds to pair. It does it automatically. I would think it would work the same way on your Galaxy S3. [ RICHARD  Jun 20, 2014 ]
Hello Paul! After the first time you pair your S3's bluetooth it will connect automatically. I have the Galaxy S2, and it will connect automatically. It will take about 30 seconds before it recognizes it can connect. To speed it up you can connect it manually, but that's just seconds difference. In short answer, Yes. [ ETHAN  Jun 20, 2014 ]
The details say that this will automatically dim when the headlights are turned on (it connects to the famous "orange wire" which sends that signal). It sounds like from Emil's answer above it might not dim continuously with general instrument-panel control (not sure if any aftermarket stereos will), but it does have its own control to dim. In your use case, needing it bright during the day and dim at night, it appears it will be able to do this so long as you connect the orange wire correctly. [ Tom  Sep 12, 2014 ]
Thanks! I got a variable color JVC from 2012 and it dims when the headlights are on by adjusting the dimmer on the panel. I can't buy one that does not have this feature. Because of the stupid location of the radio in the car I need it super bright in the day and to dim automatically at night. Bummer. This is a feature that used to be standard on after market radios, is standard with stock radios and from an electronics engineering perspective is very simple and cheap to add. Thanks again. [ Jason  Jun 16, 2014 ]
Thanks! I am a little confused on conflicting answers but this seems reasonable because I've got a variable color JVC from 2012 and it dims when the headlights are on by adjusting the dimmer on the panel. I can't buy one that does not have this feature. Because of the stupid location of the radio in the car I need it super bright in the day and to dim automatically at night. Thanks again. The display does not dim with the instrument panel dimmer. It does have light level settings that you can preset. You can also change the color of the radio's panel lights but not the LCD display. The LCD display is white. The color of the panel lights are split. For example one side of the radio can be blue while the other (opposite) side might be red. Hope this helps. [ EMIL  Jun 16, 2014 ]
Yes, there is a dimmer wire with this stereo. [ gerald  Jun 16, 2014 ]
In my 01 silverado it does not. I do not remember seeing a wire for it and I wires every wire according the the crutch field directions. It does have a day and night mode though that you can set different colors and different brightness levels for each. And if that isn't enough it's only a few buttons to turn the brightness down. [ DEVIN  Jun 16, 2014 ]
It depends on the device. My phone outputs all audio via bluetooth when paired. So any application plays through the stereo. [ Sirena  Jun 09, 2014 ]
Im not sure about google play but you are able to stream spotify as well as iheart radio [ TIM  Jun 02, 2014 ]
Yes. It plays with google music service without issue. Basic controls through Bluetooth as well [ YASSAKAR  Jun 01, 2014 ]
    Yep [ Jeff  Jun 01, 2014 ]
    Yes [ ALEXIS M  Jun 01, 2014 ]
I don't know if you would have any issues connecting with USB, but I know mine does connect over USB and I ignore it because the bluetooth is so convenient! [ RHONDA  May 02, 2014 ]
I also to have a nexus 5 running 4.4.3 . this head unit I have not been able to play music via USB cable even though music is stored locally. But streaming music by Bluetooth is great and talking also [ YASSAKAR  May 01, 2014 ]

No you should not have any issues. [ CLARENCE M  May 01, 2014 ]
I use my usb port to listen to mp3's on a flash drive. It will power (charge) any compatible usb device. You should be able to charge your phone with no problems, however, I can't answer if you will have any compatibility issues with more in depth features. [ RICHARD  May 01, 2014 ]
    I haven't had any problems operating on Android [ MICHAEL  May 01, 2014 ]
I have not had any issues with 4.4.2 on this model head unti or their older ones ( I own 3 different models ) [ Jeff  May 01, 2014 ]
Have not used Bluetooth yet, and I have an apple product, no android [ JULIE  Apr 23, 2014 ]
I do not have an android device, but on my iOS devices it allows control via bluetooth or cable connection to the head unit. [ THOMAS  Apr 22, 2014 ]
My purchase was a presant for my Sister inlaw, She Does not use Pandora so I can't say for sure but I would say, yes. USB in my experiance has been a work around for lack of Bluetooth. I used cable into an old Kenwood before my new bluetooth unit. The free Pandora App (either from iTunes Apps, Google Play, or BlackBerry App World) lets you play music from the Pandora music service through the JVC KD-R950BT using your USB-connected Apple iPhone (iOS 5.0+) or Bluetooth paired Android/Blackberry smartphone.Good luck in Your install [ DALE  Apr 21, 2014 ]
Mine works though USB as well. Nice unit, I like it much. [ DOUGLAS  Apr 21, 2014 ]
this unit will control pandora via bluetooth and usb. [ WARREN  Apr 20, 2014 ]
I dont have a clue, The instructions were not clear. [ HAROLD  Apr 20, 2014 ]
Sorry, I can't help. I purchased the receiver for a friend and have not yet installed it in her vehicle. Paul [ Paul  Apr 10, 2014 ]
Don't have a Galaxy S4, but am sure you're good to go, because: (1) My wife bluetooth paired her Galaxy S3 to the KD-R950BT just fine and uses it for handsfree phone talk frequently. (2) Although she drives the car daily and I take public transportation, I made it a point to also pair my Galaxy Note 2 to the KD-R950BT and, right after, successfully tested both handsfree phone talk and playing music stored on my GN2's SD card through it. [ Wayne  Apr 09, 2014 ]
I can't speak for the Samsung compatibility since I don't own one but the head unit will only accept USB flash drives. There is no SD card slot. [ RONALDO  Apr 09, 2014 ]
its compatible with my Samsung galaxy 3 blue booth but I have not used it with my sd card yet. [ TAIWO  Apr 09, 2014 ]
It has worked with any phone I have paired so far. Never tried an S4 but I am sure at least the bluetooth will work. [ Sirena  Apr 09, 2014 ]
