Our take on the JVC KD-X210

If you're ready to toss that bulky album full of scratched-up CDs and go digital, JVC's KD-X210 digital media receiver offers an impressive array of features for its price range, along with plenty of connections for all your devices. The "short body" design means it can fit into a wide variety of cars and trucks, not to mention vehicles like certain golf carts and ATVs.

A digital dynamo

If you're ready to toss that bulky album full of scratched-up CDs and go digital, JVC's KD-X210 digital media receiver offers an impressive array of features for its price range, along with plenty of connections for all your devices. The "short body" design means it can fit into a wide variety of cars and trucks, not to mention vehicles like certain golf carts and ATVs.

Ready for your iPhone®

Plug your iPod® or iPhone into the front USB port and enjoy complete control, not to mention faster charging. The KD-X210's built-in iPod controls let you access your playlists intuitively. If you're a Pandora® or iHeartRadio user, you can connect your iPhone® and access basic functions like "play," "pause," "thumbs-up," and "thumbs-down" with the receiver's controls. For added convenience, the 2-way control feature lets you pick your music using the receiver or the phone itself.

This digital media receiver will not play CDs. If you want to play CDs in your vehicle, we offer a wide selection of CD receivers.

Great for Android phones, too

With the JVC Music Control app, you can get more from your music when you connect your Android smartphone (Froyo/Gingerbread OS only) via USB. List and search stored MP3 music by artist or album, or let the app analyze your songs and create a playlist that suits your mood.

Do more with your USB connection

The powerful 1A USB port lets you keep a smartphone charged while it's performing many battery-draining tasks at once. With your smartphone connected, you can use Drive Change Mode to listen to the internal memory as one source and access its little microSD card as another. You can also make a mix at home, save it to a thumb drive, and plug it into the USB drive. The KD-X210 plays MP3, WMA, WAV, and FLAC files, and they'll all sound great, thanks to the 24-bit digital audio converter (DAC).

Build a better system

If you're planning to expand your car audio system in the future, the KD-X210 includes rear 2.5-volt preamp outputs that you can switch over to subwoofer mode. You can also add Bluetooth® connectivity with an optional adapter. A front aux input lets you hook up other gear, like a Dock & Play satellite radio.

iPod/smartphone note: If you're going to use your iPod or smartphone with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for compatibility information.

I bought this receiver to upgrade a stock stereo in my '02 Explorer. I didn't need a CD player, just something to plug my phone into. This receiver did the trick. Easy to install, pretty easy to set up, sounds great!

Pros: Cost, ease of installation, looks

    Cons: Somewhat complicated setup!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Perfect for a secondary car. The car my daughter is driving, a 2004 Camry, had the OEM system in it. CD player kinda worked and who uses a cassette tape anymore? This unit was perfect. Nice price. iPhone connectivity. USB and AUX. Great for that age group, or any for that matter, even though no CD player.

    Pros: Price Size Use

    Cons: Red lights.

    Great unit for the price

I chose this unit because it does not have a cd player. Very easy to install with the included installation kit, only 15 dollars more for the kit. Since this unit does not have a cd player, the space behind the unit was ample for all of the wires. I installed this in my 2004 Dodge Ram 2500 SLT Crew Cab.

Pros: Easy install. Instructions were perfect.

    Cons: None

    1998 Jeep Wrangler
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this for my Jeep because I want to be able to play music from a USB stick. I really like the features like how it displays the name of the radio station and song. The physical interface isn't that great, though. The buttons are too small in my opinion and the knob spins too easily. The LED display is too dim in the daytime and hard to read. The red glow of the buttons seems cheap but that's just my opinion. I am pleased with the sound quality and all of the different menu settings that can be set up. However it is a little awkward navigating the menu. For example, to adjust simple things like balance, fader, bass, treble requires going into the menu system, turning knobs, pressing buttons, etc. I would never be able to do this while driving without having a wreck. On old fashioned radios the knobs for doing this were very accessible. So, all of the features are nice but the ones I use are buried within them and not really possible to access while driving. Also, the radio bevel is not attached very well and will come off if it is tugged a bit. Not rugged at all. For the price, it seems like a good deal, but I don't really like the buttons. You get what you pay for.

    Pros: Nice features. Nice price.

Cons: User interface (hardware and software) are not so great.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased as a Xmas present for my son. The unit was delivered very quickly, I might add. Install it myself in a 95' Honda Accord. It was fairly easy, once I got the old plastic housing off)it connects the radio and the shifter. The plastic housing) It came with everything I would need to complete the install. And even with 20YO stock speakers, its sounds good. I would recommend to ALL my friends and family. The only downside, is that it will take some time to master it. And this model doesn't work with all android phones. But he(my son) is extremely happy with it.

Pros: Overall value, ease of installation. Bang for your buck!!

Cons: Doesn't work it all droid phones

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just bought this two weeks ago, so I'm a bit surprised to see that it is discontinued already. But, I'm pleased with it. It sounds SO much better than the unit it replaces. The dimmable display connected to the dash lights is a wonderful feature on a unit of this price, and was the deciding factor for me - most head units are way, way, way too bright and distracting. I have not tried the Android compatibility. It would be nice if it had an SD card slot, but I can use a pico-USB drive.

    Pros: Dimmable display, good sound

Cons: No SD card slot, confusing menu system.

I bought this radio is a replacement unit for my step daughters car. Installation was pretty straight forward. For the price of the radio has quite a few little features on it, but doesn't seem to be that expandable. You would not be able to build a high and system around it, but thats not what its for. For what it is it is a great sounding little budget stereo.

Pros: Lots of features for the price. Does have the option for Bluetooth capability. Easy to operate.

    Cons: Only 2 preamp outputs.

Daughters first car , 99 Saturn, came with a radio without any aux ports so she couldn't plug in her iPod. Didn't want to spend a lot on a radio. This radio is ideal. The original radio had very poor reception, we are quite rural, this radio pulls in stations great. I was very surprised how much better it sounds with the original speakers.

This is a great buy. So many features packed into a mech-less chassis. Can't beat it especially for the price. I like that it has a regular USB input instead of something specific to the stereo (I hate that).

    Cons: No bluetooth. Oh well

Took a while to install in my 1999 Tacoma, but had nothing to do with the unit, but rather the truck. Actually seems it pretty easy. All modes I use work fine, and Even my am radio buzz went away! Charges my cellphone and plays the music on it. Even displays the tracks, albums, etc.

Pros: Customer service answered personally and quickly and resolved all installation issues fast as well.None of it was unit related, but they had the experience and knowledge to help, even with my old truck. Detachable face plate for security! Thanks guys!

Cons: Need eighty dollar adapter for blue tooth for cell phone, but hey, at that price, it works and I cannot have everything!

You can't beat this unit for the price. I plugged my old iPod 2 in to it and tossed the iPod in the glove box. The music starts right back up where I left off when I start the truck.

Pros: Price. This thing is very shallow, you could fit it just about anywhere. Very easy to use. Nice small remote hangs on my key chain.

Cons: It has very small buttons like all aftermarket radios.

Besides the fact that the front right speaker kept cutting out and there is no cd player, and (according to my wife) "it is not blue", this is the perfect budget head unit if you have digital music files. Easy to use, I only had to read the manual to turn off the demo mode. Not as heavy as I usually like them, but for the money it was the perfect fit.

Pros: Ease of use Ease of install Sound not too bad

Cons: Front right speaker port cuts out Only one color... appease the wife Only can use digital files Would like to have been able to hook up cd changer

Varnel from Superior, WI on 9/21/2014

Got one of these a month or so ago, took me a bit to get used to it vs my old (2nd gen, my dad has a 1st gen~1999 vintage) JVC CD/MP3 only (with aux) deck. Comparing it vs my old JVC CD/MP3 deck, this thing rocks! The EQ is way better. (Oh and it was 1/3 the price I paid 15 years ago.) The RMS wattage went down, but I can always add an amp. Not needed to yet, but thinking about it. Just got a new car (new to me) that will need attention, looking at the 310 model as has both sets of outputs, since this one only has one pair. To wrap this up, changing several vehicle radios to JVC made ones has vastly improved FM reception and sound clarity While I've only spent about 2 years with satellite radio receivers, having the Aux def is a plus. Never know when you'll get a new device to plug into that. If you want a radio that you can hang onto for a decade, you're looking for something like this. Who knows what we might want to hook up via Aux in the decade ahead. Bottom line: This unit pounds for the price. A cheap 16g flash stick provides hours of entertainment, far more then would be required for a cross-country road trip. Unit claims to be able to work with Android/iPhone over USB, but lacks Bluetooth. I have neither, so cannot attest to that performance.

Pros: Got a cheap 16g USB stick shoved in the front, will hold well over 200 hours of content. Who needs a CD-Changer with that? Plus solid-state doesn't skip. Let the music roll!

Cons: My only complaint would be the clock. Sometimes it will cycle thru and return to the clock, sometimes does not. I like to leave it there, and generally it will return after vehicle start. I would guess its about 1 in 5 vehicle starts that I have to use the "Disp" button to cycle it manually. If I am on my way to work, seeing this is important, so I will cycle it early as opposed to waiting for the unit to get there.... If you don't use the Disp button on a regular basis, might effect usage.

This head unit has fantastic sound and looks really good apart from the fact that every 5 seconds the lights on the unit flash and tell you what the unit can do, like pandora and IHeart radio. It happens to be THE most annoying thing that happens while driving but you get used to it. Part of this head unit I dont like is the fact that after following the directions, the head unit slides back and forth so I had to rig up something to hold it in the compartment. Overall 3 out of 5 stars.

Pros: Looks good, great sound, multiple compatible uses, easy to install.

Cons: Head unit slides around, annoying flashing lights and the fact you cannot turn them off.

    Great radio for the money.

My wife and I got this radio for my stepson for his birthday. Since he already had a bluetooth phone device in his car separate from his radio, we decided to get him a radio without it. He loves it. I installed it and checked it out, sounds great. Plugged my ipod into it, and that sounds great too. There is no cd player, but that's what he wanted. He got tired of carrying around cases of cds, and now he just plugs his iphone into the radio instead. He got a sub box with an amp, got it sounding pretty good. Radio has separate sub controls built in, like crossover freq, level, etc...just gotta find them in the menu. Overall, a great deal and radio.

Pros: Ipod controls, great tuner, good sound and audio controls.

    Cons: None that we've found

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

DOES NOT WORK WITH CURRENT ANDROID! Android got rid of their mass storage aspect that most units need to play music from, so the unit will not recognize your android device but I am sure it works great with iPhone/iPod. I hope the next update fixes this problem, but in the mean time I will just have to use the aux cord. Relatively easy to install, Crutchfield sent me the wrong adapter for my vehicle and ended up sending me the right one free of charge. After that it was a breeze. Looks great, sounds good with my aftermarket speakers, I was not blown away but I wasn't expecting to be for the price tag.

Pros: Great price, easy to install given the right equipment, looks nice.

Cons: Current android is not compatible through USB, you get what you pay for.

If you're one of those stereo techies and like to nit pick, buy a $300 unit. If you or your kid want an easy to use, cool head unit to replace the tape deck in your commuter car and not go broke...this ones for you.

Pros: You can figure out how to use this unit with out studying the manual for hours. If your speakers are good enough, this unit has the power to thump half decent. Charges your i-phone too. Just enough features and controls.

Cons: Only comes in red but it looks cool, For a digital only unit I'd think it should have an sd slot. (maybe thats why it so affordable). Sub is controllable but it takes some fumbling to get through the menu.

I wanted to keep it stock but need to hear my hairbands when weekend driving in it. This stereo is worth more than what I paid for it. What is better than that are the sales and tech support at Crutchfield! I have never replaced a car stereo before and mine needed a mounting kit to take up the extra GM space from the old radio. They helped me through the entiee process. Kudos to you guys at Crutchfield!!

Easy installation and great sound for an awesome value, would definitely recommend this product to any of my friends

Pros: Easy to install and not complicated to operate

Cons: The only problem I had was that some of the wiring came loose after about a month because of hot temperatures and the electrical tape couldn't handle it, but after some adjustments was good to go.

We got this to replace the factory-issued Monsoon stereo in our Hyundai. We didn't have much money, but wanted to make our car a bit more enjoyable for longer drives. We succeeded with this purchase! Much better than our old Monsoon system, and it looks pretty sporty. Nice set for a great price.

The USB port enables audio playback and control of MP3, WMA, WAV, and FLAC audio files stored on portable USB mass-storage class devices.

Note: When a mass-storage class (MSC) compatible smartphone is connected to the head unit's USB input, you can select its internal memory or external memory (such as a SD-card) for stored music playback.

Compressed Music Files: The JVC KD-X210 supports the following types of MP3, WMA, WAV, and FLAC music files loaded onto a compatible USB mass storage class device.

    Media Type Description

Track/Folder List: The Track/Folder List displays a list of MP3/WMA folders and tracks on a connected USB memory device, so you can easily access your music.

Playback Modes: In addition to Normal playback, you can select from Repeat and Random playback modes.

    • Repeat: Track Repeat (plays the current track repeatedly), Folder Repeat (plays all tracks of the current folder repeatedly), Off (cancels repeat function)
    • Random: Folder Random (plays all tracks of the current folder, then the tracks of the next folder in random), All Random (plays all tracks of the current USD device at random), Off (cancels random function)

Resume: If you change the source, playback also stops, without ejecting the USB device. Next time you select USB for the playback source, the player will start from where it has been stopped previously.

USB Charging: USB portable audio devices that can be charged via USB will be charged when plugged into the receiver's USB port (5V/1A), and the vehicle's ignition switch is set to ACC or On.

JVC Playlist Creator Compatible: JVC Playlist Creator is a free Windows-based desktop software that helps organize, manage and transfer MP3/WMA music files to your USB (MSC) device from your PC. When you playback audio files that have been stored on your USB (MSC) device using JVC Playlist Creator through the KD-X210, you can search a file by song title, album name, artist name, or genre using the head unit's Quick Search function. The JVC Playlist Creator is a Windows-based software that can be downloaded for free from JVC's website to your PC. The JVC Playlist Creator is compatible with the following Windows Microsoft Operating Systems.

    • Windows XP Professional, Home Edition SP2 or later (32-bit)
    • Windows Vista (32/64-bit)
    • Windows 7 (32/64-bit)
Note: Not compatible with Apple iPod/iPhone/iPad, Zune, or Android

Front-Panel Auxiliary Input: A front-panel stereo minijack is provided to allow the connection of almost any portable audio source with a 3.5mm headphone output (great for those non-Apple/Android devices). Simply connect your portable digital music player to the unit's front-panel auxiliary input, and you can listen to the audio from the portable player through the speakers in your mobile audio system. The unit's front-panel auxiliary input can be turned On or Off.

    Smartphone Integration

Android Compatible: The JVC KD-X210 supports USB-connection and playback of Android smartphones with Froyo or Gingerbread operating systems installed.

    • JVC Music Control: By connecting the JVC receiver via USB to an Android smartphone (Froyo/Gingerbread OS only) that has the free JVC Music Control app installed, it allows you to list and search your MP3 music stored on the smartphone from the receiver by artist name or album name. The JVC Music Control app also analyzes all of your songs that are in your Android smartphone, and creates a playlist according to your mood. Once the application has completed the analysis of the songs, simply select your current mood, and this application will generate a list of songs that best fits your mood. Your compatible Android smartphone must be recognized as a USB mass storage class device; not compatible with MTP protocol.
    • Drive Change Mode: When an Android smartphone is connected to the USB input terminal, you can select its internal memory or external memory (such as an microSD card) to playback the songs stored on the phone or on the memory card. This feature is also compatible with other USB mass storage class compliant smartphones, such as Blackberry. You can also change drives (up to 5) on multi-drive devices, such as multi-card readers and USB hubs.

iPod/iPhone Connectivity w/ DAC Bypass: The JVC KD-X210's front-panel USB port can acts as an iPod/iPhone high-speed direct connection when used with the Lightning or Dock cable that came with your iPod/iPhone. The USB connection allows your iPod/iPhone's stored music and music apps to be loaded instantly to the head unit and sound quality to be maximized through the head unit's 24-bit D/A converter, allowing for a Signal to Noise ratio up to 105dB. The KD-X210's USB connection also offers music navigation, information display, and charging of select iPod/iPhone models from the JVC in-dash head unit. You can choose to operate your iPod/iPhone through the JVC head unit's front-panel controls or from your Apple device's clickwheel/touchscreen.

    • Head Unit Mode: From the head unit's front-panel controls you can search for stored music by Playlist, Artist, Album, Song, Podcast, Genre, and Composer. The contents of a Playlist or Category can be searched alphabetically (A-Z) or numerically (0-9). The KD-X210 also supports Repeat (file/all) and Random (album/all) playback functions of your iPod/iPhone. You'll also be able to control basic playback functions (such as Play/Pause, Previous/Next Track) from select music apps streamed to your iPhone. During Head Unit Mode, the KD-X210 will display your iPod/iPhone's music file information; such as Track number, Elapsed playing time, Artist name, Song title, and Album label. Newer iPod/iPhones with iOS 6.0+ allow you to continue to access your Apple device's touchscreen in this mode in order to access other applications; older iPod/iPhone devices will be locked during connection.
    • iPod/iPhone Mode: The iPod/iPhone Mode lets you control your older iPod/iPhone (iOS 5.1.1 and earlier) from its clickwheel or touchscreen. You'll still have access to basic playback controls (like Play/Pause & Previous/Next Track) from the head unit, but advanced navigation functions will be locked. No song/artist information is displayed in this mode. The unit will simply display "iPhone Mode".
Note: The head unit's USB connection provides 1A of current to power and charge your connected iPod/iPhone when your vehicle's ignition switch is set to the 'ACC' or 'On' position. This unit does not charge the iPad. If your iPod/iPhone has no initial battery charge, then the unit will not recognize it.

    Audio Section

24 Bit D/A Converter: The JVC KD-X210 utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The JVC KD-X210 is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit. The power output specs for the KD-X210 are as follows:

    • Full Bandwidth Power: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20-20kHz, 1% THD)
    • Maximum Output Power: 50 watts x 4 channels (200 total watts)

Amplifier Gain Control: When you are using the KD-X210 with factory speakers (or those rated to less than 50 watts peak), the Amplifier Gain Control can limit the amount of power being sent to those speakers. When the Amp Gain Control is set to "low," the volume control ranges from 0 (minimum) to 30 (maximum). When using speakers rated higher than 50 watts peak, you can set the Amp Gain Control to "high," and the volume control will range from 0 to 50.

2.5V/2CH Preamp Output: The KD-X210 is equipped with two 2.5V preamp outputs (Rear/SW). You can set the Rear/SW preamp outputs for connecting a pair of full-range rear speakers (through an external amplifier) or for connecting a subwoofer (through an external amplifier). When set for rear speakers, the rear outputs operate with the unit's fader control. When set for subwoofer, the outputs are non-fading.

Subwoofer Controls: When the unit's Rear/SW preamp output is set to Subwoofer, you can set the cutoff frequency of the low-pass filter at 55Hz, 85Hz, or 120Hz. You can adjust the head unit's subwoofer level between -8 and +8 (separate from the main volume level).

Pro EQ: The KD-X210 is equipped with JVC's Pro EQ. The integrated equalizer offers 7 preset sound modes (Flat, Natural, Dynamic, Vocal Boost, Bass Boost, & User) suitable for the music genre of your choice. The User mode allows you to manually adjust the head unit's 3-band parametric EQ (Frequency, Level, and Q-Factor).

    Pro EQ
    Frequency Level Q
    Bass 60, 80, 100, 200 Hz +/- 12 dB (-6 to +6) 1.0, 1.25, 1.5, 2.0
    Midrange 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.5 kHz +/- 12 dB (-6 to +6) 0.75, 1.0, 1.25
    Treble 10.0, 12.5, 15.0, 17.5 kHz +/- 12 dB (-6 to +6) Fixed
Note: You can store Pro EQ bass, middle and treble tone settings for each source (Tuner, Aux, USB, iPod, and Pandora/iHeartRadio).

    • Digital Track Expander: The digital Track Expander automatically enhances compressed music files and restores the original richness of the recording.

    • Volume Adjust: The input level of each source (other than FM) is adjustable relative to the FM radio volume, so there isn't a significant volume difference when changing sources. Each source is individually adjustable from -5 to +5.

Key Beep: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

    Display Features

You may already have your answer considering that you asked the question four months ago but I want to include 'the' answer for anyone else that might view this and be curious. According to the manual for this receiver: "You cannot connect a USB device via a USB hub". Essentially it's a little more 'programming' that goes into the receiver but is often used as a feature to sell a higher tier receiver. I believe that in my search I found a comparable receiver roughly in the same price range that could do as you ask but I cannot recall which at the moment. Sorry!
