Crutchfield: 2014 JVC digital media receivers
Crutchfield: JVC marine receivers
Crutchfield: JVC Smart Music Control for Android
If you've reached the point where those old CDs seem like unwanted ballast, it's time to ditch the discs and go digital. JVC's KD-X31MBS digital media receiver offers an impressive array of features, including built-in Bluetooth®, and the "short body" design will fit neatly in almost any boat, Jeep, or ATV. You'll find plenty of connections for all your devices, and you'll have lots of options when you want to expand your system. As an added bonus, the reverse display cuts through glare and makes this receiver ideal for convertibles and open-top off-road vehicles.
The JVC KD-X31MBS has a "short body" design that fits almost any boat, Jeep, or ATV.
Plug your iPod® or iPhone into the front USB port and enjoy complete control, not to mention faster charging. This JVC's built-in iPod controls let you access your playlists intuitively.
If you're a Pandora® or iHeartRadio user, you can connect your iPhone® and access basic functions like "play," "pause," "thumbs-up," and "thumbs-down" with the receiver's controls.
For added convenience, the 2-way control feature lets you pick your music using the receiver or the phone itself. If your phone is equipped with Siri® Eyes Free technology, anything you can do with Siri can be done with the KD-X31MBS.
With the JVC Music Control app, you can get more from your music when you connect your Android smartphone (select operating systems only) via USB. You can list and search stored MP3 music by artist or album, or let the app analyze your songs and create a playlist that suits your mood.
The powerful 1A USB port lets you keep a smartphone charged while it's performing many battery-draining tasks at once. With your smartphone connected, you can use Drive Change Mode to listen to your phone's internal memory as one source and access its little microSD card as another. Drive Change also lets you switch between multiple memory cards in a USB multi-card reader or multiple USB thumbdrives connected to a USB hub. The KD-X31MBS plays MP3, WMA, WAV, and FLAC files, and they'll all sound great, thanks to the 24-bit digital audio converter (DAC).
If you're planning to expand your audio system in the future, the KD-X31MBS includes rear 2.5-volt preamp outputs that you can switch over to subwoofer mode. In addition to Bluetooth and a host of inputs, you can also connect the SiriusXM satellite radio tuner (not included), so you can enjoy music, news, sports, and more, even when you're many miles offshore.
A marine-rated receiver has to do more than just look good and sound great. It also has to stand up to salt, spray, sunlight, and rough weather. JVC designed the KD-X31MBS to withstand the rigors of outdoor life, with a conformal-coated circuit board and an anti-rust coating that help prevent moisture from causing damage. These no-nonsense features keep the music playing, so you can relax and enjoy yourself, whether you're out on the water or out in the woods.
In most cars, you'll need an adapter to retain those controls with this car stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and radio, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. You'll see the adapters that work with your vehicle when you add this receiver to your cart.
Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.
iPod/smartphone note: If you're going to use your iPod or smartphone with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for compatibility information.

Average Customer Review(s):
Radio installed easily with the kit provided by Crutchfield.
Pros: Easy install. Great sound
Nice basic radio with some very good features.
Pros: Easy to use
After looking at decks that would fit my Jeep, I decided this JVC model would suit me the best. So far, it has exceeded my expectations. The Bluetooth works easily with my phone with music and hands free phone calls. The receiver has power to burn. I typically run it on low power gain and it will absolutely fill the Jeep with sound. Nice upgrade from stock. As always, Crutchfield's support made this purchase & install manageable.
Pros: Power, power, power. The receiver washes away the road noise with all the sound I need. Lots of preset EQ options and you can set up your own. SiriusXM ready makes satellite radio easy. The Bluetooth makes my old Jeep just as modern as our newest car.
Cons: My only criticism would be that it takes more time than expected to boot up and to connect to Bluetooth. Other than that, I'm very pleased.
After reading other positive reviews on this deck, I purchased one for my jeep. Just like others are saying, it has way more power than my previous deck did. The Bluetooth works great for music, as I have not tried the phone function(there is a lot of road noise in my jeep). It has a ton of power, and I eventually ran the EQ flat because it's that loud. It's like night and day to my previous deck, which was also aftermarket. Seems to play usb flawlessly as well. So far no problems to speak of. Installation was quick and easy thanks to the included free wiring harness and installation kit.
Pros: Lots of power Weather resistant Good Bluetooth control
Outstanding product! I can't rate anything lower than a 5 since it's everything as advertised!!
Pros: Great sound quality and easy to use.
I cant give anything less than 5. It was exactly what the description of the product said it was and was easy to install with the kit it came with.
Surprising sound clarity and loudness from small compact head unit(its not deep in length or heavy). Put in 01 Grand Cherokee and installation was 1..5 hours. Had to ask Crutchfield couple install questions got immediate answer from nice no-foreign accent highly knowledgeable tech guy. It looks great sounds great and was easy to install. Crutchfield is the REAL DEAL. I am completely impressed with customer service referred to above. I have worked with some large name internet market place companies and they could learn a lot on how to do do it on the net from Crutchfield. I will certainly buy from them again.
Pros: Lightweight and short depth Easy wiring thanks to Crutchfield simple easy menu and controls 8gig mini thumbdrive in USB plays all i have
Light weight and fit in my old Jeep great. I'm not a fan of the tiny buttons but thats all you can get now days.
Have always had JVC radios and still very happy
The USB connection on my Kenwood (also from Crutchfield) started going bad, and I knew it was a matter of time before it shorted out-so time to upgrade. Because my dash receives a lot of direct sunlight, I wanted an LCD display. I can report that the display is great, even in direct sunlight. Two bonus features for me are the thumbs up or down Pandora controls from the head unit and the increased amperage for charging. I listen to Pandora and appreciate the ability to pause, move to the next song with the fast forward button, or like-dislike a song. In addition it's also nice to have stronger charging capabilities. On my old head unit If I used Pandora or Google maps, the phone (iPhone 6S) would lose battery life because of poor charging. There were some complaints in other reviews about the unit shorting out because of water or not being grounded properly. I took the extra time to teach my 7yr old daughter to solder every connection properly, then double wrapped those connections with heat shrink tubing and electrical tape over that. So far no shorting out has occurred. There are also some complaints about the volume knob being flimsy. While I agree it is flimsy, these head units are not meant to last forever and the price is excellent for what you get. If I had any complaints it would be the thin wiring supplied by JVC. The wiring harness supplied by Crutchfield is probably twice as thick as that supplied by JVC. All in all this is a great head unit !
Pros: Easy to read in direct sunlight, Pandora controls on the head unit, and a fully charged phone when you reach your destination. Also the time can be adjusted automatically through a signal from your FM stations.
Cons: Thin wire harness supplied by JVC and some adjustment settings are confusing.
First of, I would like to say that Crutchfield support team is absolute best. There is no one like it. They are always knowledgeable and courteous. Installation of the unit was easy and it connected to my Bluetooth phone right away (I have a Galaxy S3). Then the trouble started, people would complain about echo noise, back noise ground noise. I had to call Crutchfield at least five different times trying to regulate the microphone and eventually got it to where it was acceptable. Then there was another problem, almost every time after the phone call is made or received BT audio would disconnect and the unit would say no BT device is connected. Sometimes it would reconnect by itself, sometimes I would have to do it manually. I even downloaded and installed the firmware it still did not help. Called JVC and apparently its a known problem no matter what type of phone you have. Well, thankfully to the great customer service from Crutchfield they recommended a different unit. I am returning this JVC as we speak. Overall, if you are not planning to use BT functions and phone its a great unit with awesome music quality.
Pros: Cheap, great music quality, easy to install, easy menu.
Cons: BT audio and phone function does not work properly. Disconnects after phone call is made or received. Looses connection after starting the car. Would not recommend.
This was a very good and affordable stereo to replace a very outdated cassette deck. The marine build is perfect for a jeep
Pros: Good sound for a reasonable price. Very easy to install, the installation instructions and wiring guide sent by Crutchfield were very good. The Crutchfield support was also quick to respond and very helpful.
Cons: As mentioned in other reviews, the volume knob seems a little delicate.
Seems like a well built unit.
Pros: Seems well built, controls are easy to use. Good sound quality.
Cons: Change color display would be nice .
I installed this radio on a motorcycle and it is easy to read even in sunlight
Install was very easy with install kit ($15) having everything you need. Did have to do some minor wiring between harnesses but some butt splices made that easy.
Pros: Easy install, easy operation, easy to pair with iPhone for Bluetooth operation.
This has everything I wanted at a great value to put in my street glide. All of the features are easy to use and easy setup for everything. I use it with my nexus 6 and my iPod touch, both work seamlessly.
Pros: Easy to use, easy setup, looks great
easy to put in
Cons: sound Quality
Purchased this receiver to replace another one I bought here not too long ago. The Kenwood it replaced is also a very good unit except the display is just too hard to see in bright sunlight. I wanted to get one that would be easy to see in daylight and after a chat session and getting a suggestion to try this one, I went ahead and ordered it. This one is very easy to see during daylight hours and fits the bill just right. The sound it produced somehow is way better than the Kenwood it replaced, a whole lot easier to set up, and seems to be better suited to drive the OEM speakers in my car. The sound balance is just right, and it sounds perfect. The reception also improved somewhat, much cleaner on weaker stations that the Kenwood had trouble receiving. As a final note, the installation was painless simply because all the necessary hardware is supplied by Crutchfield. Not have to interrupt the installation to get a few things that may be needed is a big plus.
Pros: Clean sound, well balanced, and able to drive a subwoofer amp. Easy to see in day time, and auto-dim for night time use.
Cons: For me, none!!!
This JVC unit is labeled as "Marine" but that is very misleading. I had it in my boat, enclosed in a protective glovebox with a door that closes over the front, in a console with no access to water behind the unit. I was very careful not to spray the unit directly with a hose when cleaning the boat, always kept the box closed, even when in use and I keep the boat covered. Not sure how it got wet at all, actually, but it lasted only 1 month and JVC would not replace or repair it because of corrosion from getting wet. I was very careful to protect this unit from water, but somehow it got wet enough to void their warranty. Not sure how they can call it a marine radio if it can't get the slightest amount of moisture or water on it. JVC was unwilling to do anything to help. Very disappointed. I will avoid JVC/Kenwood in the future. Yes, they are the same company.
Pros: Sounded good for a few weeks.
Cons: Will not hold up at all in any outdoor environment.
Nice radio. 1st one died in 3 days. as always Crutchfield took care of it and the new one was installed in no time. Really easy to set up with my android phone.
Pros: Senses short in speaker wires and shuts off. Did know new radios did this. Easy to set up. Hands free calling great
Cons: None yet.
I would have liked differant color options, but will not complain for the price!
Great stereo at a good price.
Very easy to install and works well. Great sounds quality. Definitely would recommend.
Good unit for the price...
This had by far the best features for the price. It doesn't look flashy but it sounds good. Picks up my phone automatically, controls my phone well with the steering controls. All I wanted was something that would sound as good or better than stock and work for hands free and instant no click music off my phone. This delivers in every area.
Pros: Price water resistant easy install great bluetooth connections with no issues.
Cons: Probably me, but I can't find a mode where it shows the artist name, scrolls to song name, and then after a few seconds goes to time and date. Right now it's either artist and song, or time and date, but not both. If I read the manual I bet it would not be a problem.
Great unit. Reviewed many and chose this one for the small size, simple features and basic setup. Only draw back I see is the screen is a bit hard to read if you are not directly in front of it (i have in installed lower and when looking down at it, tough to read display). All in all a great little unit. Using as outdoor entertainment system for my RV and it kicks just enough for that. Don't expect tons of power from a small head unit. I added the wired remote to control volume and source from outside. No fancy bells and whistles but that is Not what I wanted.
Pros: Small, simple design. Just enough inputs. Available extra, wired remote from JVC. Great price/value.
Cons: Display is a bit tough to read, no IR remote.
I installed this in a 2002 Jeep Wrangler X. Wanted media, phone, etc, didn't need CD. Wanted weather resistance. Installation was a snap! Setup is a breeze. Sound quality is decent. Price was perfect. Controls are a bit clunky. The volume knob feels cheap and hard to adjust without dedicating attention to it (which is bad when you need the attention to the road). Can't just adjust volume with a finger, need to dedicate 2-3 fingers to fully grip and turn. Station presets also aren't very intuitively placed as you need to fully commit thought into what your pressing (a whole button has 2 sides, and people think they need to press the whole thing when they are pressing the right or left side). Included mic is terrible! People can barely hear me with my engine off (and I'm a loud guy as it is).
Pros: Great price point! Weather proof (at least I hope) Good quality!
Cons: Volume control is poorly designed Station presets are poorly designed Mic is terrible
I needed a good quality marine grade for my golf cart. Very happy with the quality.
Pros: Easy to read display in the bright sun. Plenty of power, Great sound at low volumes
Cons: None yet
Great sounding unit
Product works great
Pros: Easy to install and operate
Cons: Needs boat wired remote. Last I heard they were developing one and will be sure to purchase when it comes out.
Love the stereo works way better than the older alpine I had in my jeep... Big plus is I don't have to worry about rain with top down ruining my stereo
Replaced an older JVC without Bluetooth. Works great. Put the unit in my golf cart.
Easy to use and even easier to install. No hard to use or find menus. The optional remote(same as my other JVC Stereo) makes life simple. Great product for the small $$ spent. High quality sound as you would expect from JVC. I'm sold. replaced an older Alpine unit that was a power drain(not good on boat) Was out this weekend my buddy thought i'd replaced the speakers!!
Pros: Easy to use Easy to navigate
Cons: Haven't found one yet
for the price you can't go wrong. powers my infinity speakers (4) in pontoon boat really well.
Pros: price and easy to install and operate
Cons: none yet
I have bought jvc digital units in the past. This time I tried a marine unit for my Z3 so it could get wet, hot sunshine etc. I must say I am happy with it.
Pros: weather resistant, lots of features, enough power to run w/o amp
What a great stereo for my boat. I debated whether or not to get a marine stereo but after a lot of research I decide to. I was very easy to use and visibility is great in the sunlight.
Pros: Bluetooth and USB
Cons: None yet
Sounds great but no marine wired remote available as of 7/14
Pros: Bluetooth support, great sound
Cons: No marine remote available as of 7/14
I needed a new radio for our pontoon boat and decided to give this one a try. It has all of the required features, sounds great, reads all of the music off of the USB drive without any issues and was a good value.
Pros: - easy install - clear instructions - great sound and radio reception - easy to navigate between input sources
Nice radio overall. Purchased to replace older unit in my pontoon boat. Pulls in plenty of stations and great sound quality. Easy installation.
Pros: Many features. Great sound quality. Good value for the price.
Cons: No static without the engine running but picks up some static from the outboard motor ignition. New antenna reduced this a little bit.
The head unit is pretty good unit. I have been using it for about 3 weeks now on my 2006 Kawasaki Vulcan. I installed it with a Reckless Fairing with Polk Audio 6 1/2 speakers. It sounds great.
Pros: Looks Great Great Sound Easy to switch to other sources for music
Cons: Sometimes my USB doesn't read the best. I bought a brand new HIGH PERFORMANCE PNY 16 GB micro flash for this but it seems to lose a connection from time to time, but after taking it out and putting it back in it seems to work again. It also doesn't recognize Mp4
Just a word of warning - while this unit DOES recognize FLAC files on a USB drive, the JVC Playlist Creator does NOT recognize FLAC. So what does this mean for you? Well, the geniuses at JVC set the unit up so that you "navigate" through your folders of FLAC files - up to 999 folders or whatever - using the "1" and "2" buttons - NOT the tuner knob. So you can easily imagine how completely useless that "navigation" is. This is 2014 - and in 2014, JVC expects that, should I wish to access the music in say - even folder 40 - I have to repeatedly press the button FORTY TIMES. No, I'm not kidding. And does the unit even TELL you the name of the folder as you're pushing the button? NO - it just reads F01 to F99, so F40 is F40. Given the horrible navigation system, that's where I keep ALL of my Led Zeppelin albums all lumped together in ONE folder because the navigation is SO terrible. But, when you finally FIND the music you'd like to hear - it sounds great. Well, other than that you'll NOW be pressing the tuner knob to get to the EQ to change THAT to "hard rock". Again, this is 2014 - but the JVC has NO WAY of being told through ANY of the NUMEROUS ID tags available to it how to properly adjust the EQ. Anyway, there should be a HUGE disclaimer on the front of the box that reads "Yes, this unit can play FLAC - but good luck with finding your music in FLAC format." So the unit sounds great - but if you're thinking of buying a large USB drive to load up with FLAC, don't do it.
Pros: Great sounding unit once you find a song
Cons: EXTREMELY limited support for FLAC. Won't recognize most FLAC formats - so you'll need to re-encode once you find an encoder that JVC "supports". If you're buying this unit because you'd like to enjoy your awesome collection of FLAC music, you'll need to purchase a separate "player" if you care to actually FIND or ACCESS your music. The "navigation" built into this unit for accessing FLAC is archaic. Seriously, you can NOT use the tuner knob - you'll be pushing the 1 or 2 button ALL day.
Exactly as advertised, everything worked well. Wiring was easy to hook up and matched my boat. Directions were good, had a good wiring diagram. Worked well when hooked up. Performance is very good.
Pros: Solid system, good functionality
I was expecting a good head unit from JVC, but I got a lot more. My installation was a little different than normal due to this being a motorcycle fairing installation. This head unit helped first by saving me the critical inches needed to install an amplifier in a tight space. The head unit was paired up with four Polk DB 521's, and the deck power provided good power to the speakers. The control wheel made life easier because it allowed me to access the control with gloves on, not important to everyone, but for motorcycle installs it is critical. Don't be fooled by the price, you are getting a great head unit that is full featured and has the needed power for most speaker (non sub) setups. I was happy to see an non oled for my needs because as beautiful as Oled can be it is difficult to see. I could not be happier with my JVC head unit, and recommend it to the Crutchfield nation as a great pick
Pros: Small mounting depth Easy to use controls easy to view display Support for Android and Apple Multiple media options for music
Good quality from what I can tell. Not an overalls technical type of person. Like the diversity of modes. I.E. Bluetooth, pandora, SiriusXM.
Pros: Same as review different options available.
Cons: Why offer SiriusXM but not supply an antenna for it?
I installed this in my 2008 Yamaha royal star tour deluxe with aftermarket fairing. Bluetooth works well with IPhone, streaming music and pandora. I have it hooked to 4 Polk 5.25 speakers and it sounds great with plenty of volume.
Pros: Sync easy plays loud
I purchased this radio for my motorcycle. It pretty much has met my expectations of what I was looking for in a radio. The biggest option I wanted was a radio with the Blue Tooth option that I could pare with my cell phone for music. It comes with a quick release face plate for security which is good. The unit is Marine grade for moisture and exposure to the elements. It has all the basic internal features for good sound quality with many equalizer settings. The unit is small and very light weight, connections where very basic and easy to install. Comes with the basic 50 watts X 4 max output.
Pros: Good sound, easy install, looks good, easy to use
Cons: Did not come with a wireless remote

Marine Rated: The JVC KD-X31MBS is a marine motor-sports digital media receiver which employs an antirust coating to protect the unit from the harsh marine environment. The conformal coating makes it optimal for outdoor applications such as ATV/UTVs, motorcycles, and boats. Even though the conformal coating makes the receiver water-resistant, it is still recommended that it be used with a universal marine cover such as the Metra (120999005B, sold separately) or Scosche (142ACM1, sold separately).
Note: Do not install the unit in a spot exposed to direct sunlight or excessive heat or humidity. Also avoid places with too much dust or the possibility of water splashing.
Detachable Face: The JVC KD-X31MBS features a detachable face to deter theft. No face-case is provided. An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can be purchased for this unit. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.
Single-Line LCD w/ Fixed Illumination: The head unit features a 11-segment, one-line LCD with white back-lit text and blue button illumination (fixed). Adjustable brightness and dimmer settings are available for the LCD and button illumination.
Day & Time: The unit displays a 12-or 24-hour clock, as well as the day (Sun/Mon/Tue/Wed/Thu/Fri/Sat). The day & time can be selected to remain on, even if the head unit is switched off (as long as the vehicle's key is in the accessory or start position).
Demo Mode: This unit features a Demo mode which can be turned On or Off within the menu.
Bluetooth Technology: The JVC KD-X31MBS is equipped with built-in Bluetooth (version 2.1+EDR), allowing you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the JVC KD-X31MBS. See JVC's Bluetooth compatibility chart for a complete list of compatible Bluetooth enabled devices.
Secure Simple Pairing (SSP): With Secure Simple Pairing (SSP), you can easily pair a Bluetooth enabled phone to the JVC KD-X31MBS without having to enter pin codes or go through complicated settings. When a paired Bluetooth device is in close proximity to the receiver, the auto connection function automatically pairs the two units. You can pair up to five Bluetooth-enabled devices to the JVC head unit with a maximum of two Bluetooth phones and one Bluetooth audio player connected at one time (but only one can be used at a time).
Bluetooth Hands-Free Communication: The head unit supports Bluetooth hands-free communication for your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone. The controls of the KD-X31MBS can be used to dial a number, answer an in-coming call, or end a call. The unit also includes an external microphone (with mounting bracket) featuring adjustable gain, so you can carry on your side of the conversation while listening to the caller through your vehicles speakers. During a conversation, you can switch between the Private Mode (talking directly on your cell phone) and the Hands Free Mode.
Note: The external wired microphone offers improved audio quality versus an integrated microphone, so you can be heard easier over noisy traffic and road noise. You can adjust the volume level and noise cancellation of the microphone without affecting the other sources. The external microphone features an attached 10' cable terminated by a right-angle 3.5mm connector which plugs into the mic input on the rear-panel of the head unit. The microphone offers an integrated mounting bracket which can be clipped to your vehicle's sun-visor or taped to your dash. The external microphone measures 0.525" (diameter) x 1.505" (depth).
SMS: If your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone is compatible with SMS (Short Message Service), the JVC head unit will notify you when a message has been received. You must then use your phone to check the message. You cannot read, edit, or send a message through this unit.
Wireless Audio Streaming (w/ Metadata Display): The JVC KD-X31MBS also supports wireless audio playback (AD2P) and control (AVRCP) of a Bluetooth enabled audio player or smartphone. The KD-X31MBS will be able to control basic playback functions of your Bluetooth device's stored music; such as Play/Pause, Skip Next/Previous, Fast Forward/Rewind and Random/Repeat. The head unit will also display your stored music's song information; such as Artist name and Song/Album title. The KD-X31MBS also supports audio streaming of music apps downloaded on your smartphone with metadata display and limited control. Advanced music control of your music apps will still need be done via your Bluetooth-enabled smartphone. When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call. Once the call is finished, your streaming music will resume.

Simply press the "phone command" button on the KD-X31MBS to engage Siri and use the included microphone to communicate with Siri. Siri's voice will heard through your vehicle's speakers. All Siri functions including hands-free calling, music search, setting reminders, text-messaging, audible navigation, and more can be done through the head unit and its microphone. The head unit will only display hands-free calling and Bluetooth audio information (all other functions of Siri are only audible through the KD-X31MBS; visual data will still need to be viewed from your iPhone device).
Note: You can ask Siri to get directions to a destination and the turn-by-turn instructions will heard through your vehicle's speakers, while the on-screen map still displays on your iPhone 4S/5/5C/5S. The head unit's audio is attenuated while Siri provides audible directions.
USB Port: The JVC KD-X31MBS features a front-panel USB 2.0 type-A port (behind a sliding cover) connection and control of a portable USB mass-storage class (MSC) device; such as select Android smartphones (Froyo/Gingerbread OS only), portable digital audio players, or USB thumbdrives. The USB port enables audio playback and control of MP3, WMA, WAV, and FLAC audio files stored on portable USB mass-storage class devices.

Front-Panel Auxiliary Input: A front-panel stereo minijack is provided to allow the connection of almost any portable audio source with a 3.5mm headphone output (great for those non-Apple/Android devices). Simply connect your portable digital music player to the unit's front-panel auxiliary input, and you can listen to the audio from the portable player through the speakers in your mobile audio system. The unit's front-panel auxiliary input can be turned On or Off.
Android Compatible: The JVC KD-X31MBS supports USB-connection and playback of Android smartphones with Froyo or Gingerbread operating systems installed.
iPod/iPhone Connectivity w/ DAC Bypass: The JVC KD-X31MBS's front-panel USB port can acts as an iPod/iPhone high-speed direct connection when used with the Lightning or Dock cable that came with your iPod/iPhone. The USB connection allows your iPod/iPhone's stored music and music apps to be loaded instantly to the head unit and sound quality to be maximized through the head unit's 24-bit D/A converter, allowing for a Signal to Noise ratio up to 105dB. The KD-X31MBS's USB connection also offers music navigation, information display, and charging of select iPod/iPhone models from the JVC in-dash head unit. You can choose to operate your iPod/iPhone through the JVC head unit's front-panel controls or from your Apple device's clickwheel/touchscreen.
Note: The head unit's USB connection provides 1A of current to power and charge your connected iPod/iPhone when your vehicle's ignition switch is set to the 'ACC' or 'On' position. This unit does not charge the iPad. If your iPod/iPhone has no initial battery charge, then the unit will not recognize it.
iPod Compatibility Chart: The JVC KD-X31MBS is "Made for iPod/iPhone" compatible and supports the following iPod/iPhone model features (as of 3/5/2014):
|Apple Device||Generation||Tested Version||Media Type||Control Type||Specific Apps||Display Type||Bluetooth||Charge|
|Audio||Video||Head Unit||iPod/App||Pandora app||iHeart Link||Artist/Song Text||Track Info||Phone||Audio||Siri|
Note: Apple iPod/iPhone software updates may change functionality results. If you download a newer software version, you may need to reset the head unit and your iPod/iPhone to regain functionality. If this doesn't work, you may need to wait until a newer software update is available.
RDS AM/FM Tuner : The JVC KD-X31MBS features a built-in AM/FM tuner with manual, seek, and preset tuning.
Note: You can set the built-in AM/FM tuner to US standard or European tuning.
Internet Radio Apps: The JVC KD-X31MBS allows you to access Pandora and iHeartRadio online music services through your USB-connected iPhone or Bluetooth-connected Android/Blackberry smartphone. Your Apple iPhone must be connected to the KD-X31MBS via the 30-pin or Lightning cable supplied with your iPhone. Your Android or Blackberry smartphone must support A2DP/ AVRCP/SPP Bluetooth profiles and be paired with the JVC KD-X31MBS. Your iPhone, Android smartphone, or Blackberry device will need an active Data Plan account with connection to the Internet via 3G, EDGE, or WiFi.
Note: Access to these Internet Radio services will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone or Android/Blackberry smartphone to connect to the Internet. Not supported in Canada and only available in the United States.
SiriusXM Ready: The JVC KD-X31MBS comes ready for SiriusXM programming with access to XM & Sirius Satellite Radio stations. Thanks to its proprietary SiriusXM Connect port, you can add the optional SXV200V1 SiriusXM Connect tuner and receive more than 130 channels of exclusive programming directly from SiriusXM, via the "SiriusXM All Access" package (subscription required). Visit SiriusXM.com for a complete list of subscription options & channel guide. Additional features of the SXV200V1 SiriusXM Connect tuner include:
Note: A separate SiriusXM Satellite Radio subscription is required (operates on the XM Network). However, you can easily add this SiriusXM tuner to an existing Sirius or XM account for a Multi-Radio Discount Plan.
24 Bit D/A Converter: The JVC KD-X31MBS utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior sound quality.
MOSFET Amplifier: The JVC KD-X31MBS is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit. The power output specs for the KD-X31MBS are as follows:
Note: When you are using the KD-X31MBS with factory speakers (or those rated to less than 50 watts peak), the Amplifier Gain Control can limit the amount of power being sent to those speakers. When the Amp Gain Control is set to "low," the volume control ranges from 0 (minimum) to 30 (maximum). When using speakers rated higher than 50 watts peak, you can set the Amp Gain Control to "high," and the volume control will range from 0 to 50.
2.5V/2CH Preamp Output + Sub Control: The KD-X31MBS is equipped with one pair of 2.5V preamp outputs. You can set the Rear/SW preamp outputs for connecting rear speakers (through an external amplifier) or for connecting a subwoofer (through an external amplifier). When set for rear speakers, the rear outputs operate with the unit's fader control. When set for subwoofer, the outputs are non-fading and you can set the cutoff frequency of the low-pass filter at 55Hz, 85Hz, or 120Hz. You can also adjust the head unit's subwoofer level between -8 and +8 (separate from the main volume level).
Pro EQ: The KD-X31MBS is equipped with JVC's Pro EQ. The integrated equalizer offers 12 preset sound modes (Flat, Hard Rock, Jazz, Pop, R&B, Talk, vocal Boost, Bass Boost, Classical, Dance, User 1, or User 2) suitable for the music genre of your choice. The User modes allow you to manually adjust the head unit's 3-band parametric EQ (Frequency, Level, and Q-Factor).
|Bass||60, 80, 100, 200 Hz||+/- 12 dB (-6 to +6)||1.0, 1.25, 1.5, 2.0|
|Midrange||0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.5 kHz||+/- 12 dB (-6 to +6)||0.75, 1.0, 1.25|
|Treble||10.0, 12.5, 15.0, 17.5 kHz||+/- 12 dB (-6 to +6)||Fixed|
Note: You can store Pro EQ bass, middle and treble tone settings for each source (Bluetooth, AM/FM, Aux, USB, iPod, Pandora/iHeart Radio).
Sound Enhancements: The head unit provides further sound enhancements for your car audio system.
Key Beep: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.
Smart Music Control App (for Android): JVC's Smart Music Control App lets you view the current status and perform simple gesture or voice control of the JVC head unit from your Bluetooth-paired Android smartphone (2.3+). The Smart Music Control App uses Bluetooth to communicate between your Android smartphone and the digital media receiver. The head unit will auto connect to the Smart Music Control app when your Smartphone is in range. The Smart Music Control app is specifically designed for easy gesture control or voice command operation while driving, so driver and passenger can access information with ease from the Android Smartphone. With the Smart Music Control App, passenger and driver can check current playing song details or other car stereo information.
Optional Marine Wired Remote: The JVC KD-X31MBS features a wired remote input wire (blue/yellow) which allows you to connect an optional JVC marine wired remote (105RMRK62M, sold separately).
Note: The head unit's wired remote input wire also lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately).

JVC's 2014 digital media receivers are great for everyone who uses their smartphone as their main source of music, and they work great with popular music apps.

JVC makes a great product. This head unit is perfect. Apple & Android compatible. Blue Tooth connectivity coupled with a sleek look and layout.[ Nick Feb 18, 2016 ]
Very nice receiver! I did my homework and this did not disappoint. Love all the listening options and the frontal hookups! I never was one to carry a ton of CD's...who does anymore anyway. BTooth, MP3, USB....great for what I needed it for. The back side is great too. With the wiring provided, it connected with my stock wiring perfectly and has RCA amp connections avail when I'm ready to expand with my amp/woofers.[ Brad Jan 23, 2016 ]
Turn on blue tooth on phone then on the radio select the blue tooth input then add you're phone to the radio.[ gary Feb 26, 2016 ]
It doesn't have iOS support for radio controls[ Kent Feb 26, 2016 ]
I purchased this stereo for my boat... It came with all the necessary hardware. Loved It![ David Oct 08, 2015 ]
Yes. Use the fader to go all front or all rear. I only have two speakers so I fade all power to them. Perfect. Btw, the JVC unit is great. I've got a JBL amp as well. Great sound thru Polk speakers. It's worked well for yrs.[ Hal Oct 05, 2015 ]
Yes.[ SCOTT P Oct 04, 2015 ]
I think it would be possible, but i would use a small amp. I believe you will be much happier.[ JACK Aug 05, 2015 ]
I don't know but iPhone 5 s works fine.[ DOUGLAS Jun 10, 2015 ]
Should also mention that via usb connection it seemed to work ok with iPhone 6[ Spencer Jun 09, 2015 ]
It works via Bluetooth with an iPhone 5 ... Should work with a 6 or any Bluetooth device that recognizes it.[ Spencer Jun 09, 2015 ]
I use mine with an iPhone 5. I would expect it is compatible with an iPhone 6. However, I will add that the volume knob has started to go out on the unit in the past 2 weeks. The volume lowers on its own until I jiggle it. Of course, I am a few weeks over the manufacturer 12 month warranty.[ SCOTT P Jun 09, 2015 ]
I used a 6 plus with it connected to Bluetooth with no issues, the iPhones uses Bluetooth like all devices, so hook it up and enjoy the sounds.[ Reginald Jun 09, 2015 ]
Yes. I linked mine[ JEFF Jun 09, 2015 ]
Just took the boat out of storage today and looked at it again. Mine doesn't do that and I don't remember changing any settings. Sorry, I know that's not helpful.[ Roger D. May 15, 2015 ]
Are you sure there is battery power to the unit continuously after it's turned off? This is needed to retain settings after powering down, assuming you deselected demo mode after powering up. Do you also lose an FM Presets? If so, this would seem to indicate a total loss of power and unit is resetting to factory defaults.[ ALAN D May 11, 2015 ]
It sounds like the unit is losing memory when turned off.Do you have the power hooked up correctly, one should go to a constant power supply and the other should be connected to power supply that is activated when ignition is on.Hope that helps.[ James May 11, 2015 ]
Sounds like there may not be a direct battery connection or you have not manually chosen the display you want. If you have chosen display but you loose it after key -off. Check battery connection. Ground is important also in a fiberglass boat[ MIKE R May 10, 2015 ]
You can not use any wired remotes on this unit. However, I pretty much only use Bluetooth and can control the radio with my phone (stop/start, volume, skip) [ JEFF May 06, 2015 ]
Yes in the functions menu under display your can set it to what ever brightness you would like.[ Frederick Apr 16, 2015 ]
sorry, never tried...[ DANE T Apr 12, 2015 ]

Tony, I don't know much about SirusXM but my manual shows an expansion port for the hook-up on the rear panel. This is my second JVC digital you can't go wrong for this price!![ MIKE R Aug 17, 2014 ]
You sure can. This receiver is rated for 22 watts RMS x 4.[ Jeff Apr 02, 2014 ] Staff
No this JVC unit will not work for you. I had it in my boat, enclosed in a glovebox, in a console with no access to water. I did not spray the unit directly, always kept the box closed and covered the boat. It lasted 1 month and JVC would not cover it because of corrosion from getting wet. I was very careful to protect this unit from water, but somehow it got wet enough to void their warranty. Not sure how they can call it a marine radio if it can't get the slightest amount of water on it. JVC was unwilling to do anything to help. Very disappointed.[ Mike Jul 20, 2015 ]
I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: A marine receiver has to do more than just look good and sound great. It also has to stand up to salt, spray, sunlight, and rough weather. JVC designed the KD-X31MBS to withstand the rigors of boating life, with a conformal-coated circuit board and an anti-rust coating that help prevent moisture from causing damage. These no-nonsense features keep the music playing, so you can relax and enjoy your time on the waterIf you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.[ Krissy Mar 03, 2014 ] Staff
