Our take on the JVC KD-X40

Got all your tunes on an iPod®, iPhone®, or another player? JVC designed the KD-X40 digital media receiver to get the most out of your digital music collection. It doesn't play CDs, but in your car, it doesn't need to.

This digital media receiver will not play CDs. If you want to play CDs in your vehicle, we offer a wide selection of CD receivers.

CDs — who needs 'em?

Got all your tunes on an iPod®, iPhone®, or another player? JVC designed the KD-X40 digital media receiver to get the most out of your digital music collection. It doesn't play CDs, but in your car, it doesn't need to.

Do more with your USB connection

JVC upped the power in their USB port, which lets you keep a smartphone charged while it's performing many battery-draining tasks at once. And with your smartphone connected, you can listen to your phone's internal memory as one source and access the little microSD card as another.

Of course, you can still play your iPod like before. Just connect your player to a USB slot and you're good to go. You can dive into your music library using the KD-X40's controls, and enjoy better sound quality than you get with an auxiliary input connection. With your iPhone connected, you can also stream PANDORA® Internet Radio through a free iPhone app.

Separated Variable Color display

The KD-X40 features a super cool display that lets you change the colors on the controls independent from those on the screen — with over 30,000 possible shades per side. You can match your receiver to your dash, support your favorite team, or just make a statement.

Expansion possibilities

It's always good to keep your options open, and this JVC is ready when you want to expand your system. You can talk hands-free on your compatible phone with the help of JVC's Bluetooth® adapter (not included). You'll find that the two sets of preamp outputs make it easier to add and control amps and subs, plus you can switch one set over to subwoofer mode and adjust your bass on the fly. You'll also get two auxiliary inputs for hooking up more gear, like a Dock & Play satellite radio.

Want to keep your steering wheel controls?

In most vehicles, you can use an adapter to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this JVC stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the JVC, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

iPod note:

If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I put one in my 2000 Ranger. Came back to Crutchfield to get one for my 2001 just to find out that it's discontinued and out of stock. I used it with my iPod, until the iPod died. Still have the USB as a source though. The iPod navigation controls were a little time consuming, which is bad while driving. The worst thing about it is the crap adapter unit to mount it in the dash, but that's not the unit.

    Pros: Reliable, good looking unit.

Cons: iPod controls aren't the best.

Excelent head unit. nothing wrong yet!

mattintc from boyne city on 3/14/2013

Well to start off the people that got mad because it was to complex for them or the lights where to flashy apparently has never owned a JVC before. This is a unit that is hard to get used to but after you get past that its amazing! i cant imagine screwing with a USB stick. Id much rather stick to an ancient ipod since it still works. But with this head unit i noticed that it is much like my other JVC head unit which i absolutely love!

Pros: It has many many features and sounds pretty good for such a cheap head unit

Cons: Maybe the complexity of it.

    sounds good

Replaced an old Clarion deck in my off road truck. Thing I like about it is, one its inexpensive for what you get, second, I like there is no CD player. Who uses CD's anymore, and this is an off road truck, I dont want the cd skipping every time I hit something on the trail.

Pros: Sound great matched with after market speakers, even made stock speakers sound better. There is no faceplate. sounds like it should be a con right? I say no, for one who takes their faceplate off after the first few weeks, the other reason I say its a pro: when off-roading, the one on my Clarion would vibrate its way open and eventually it broke off. It would fall off unless I was on smooth pavement.

Cons: The capacity of the thumb drive you can use could be higher. The remote is tiny, i can see losing it easy. Its about the size of your key fob. but not practical to use on a key ring. Another line on the display would be nice too.

    Affordable, but disappointing iPhone integration

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this as a replacement to my factory radio after my last iphone adapter broke. The display is OK, although the interface leaves something to be desired. The menu options aren't very intuitive, nor is the ability to switch between various sources. The look is fine, and it's nice to be able to change the color scheme to match my car, both for day and night views. My biggest gripe is the iphone integration. It's extremely disappointing. When you plug in your iPhone, it immediately starts playing the first song (alphabetically) on your device. Even if you were listening to something else recently (or listening to music from another app), it instantly starts playing when you plug it in. I contacted JVC and they say there's no way to change this, so you're stuck with the stereo blasting out whatever is at the top of your itunes. Really a shame.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just what I wanted, No CD, No tape, just a radios, a USB and a front and back auxillary ports (there is more in the back). The sound is good, the signals are strong, much better than the factory unit. Just what I was looking for and at a good price. The special came with the installation kit at no extra cost. This unit was not listed as a fit for my car as it did not meet the clearance criteria of the Crutchfield engineers, An advisor suggested it when I said that the fit units were above my price points or were not getting good ratings, This lengthened my search.

Pros: Just what I was looking for with an installation kit to boot.

    Cons: None with this unit.

Cons: Only con is that you really can not just select the artist you want using the usb but if you have the ipod hooked up that is taken care of.

I bought a 32gb usb stick to use with this unit. The unit can only see 255 songs in a directory, so I had to create about 25 subdirectories on my usb stick and divide my library between them all. That was a bit of a chore.

Pros: Works great w/ my Ipod.

Cons: Needed to use an interface box to make it work w/ my steering wheel controls

    So So

    Dave from Florida on 10/25/2012

Was purchased to replace an aging eight year old Pioneer unit. When using a thumb drive the folder up down buttons work in reverse - pressing the down arrow button goes up in the folder tree, while pressing the up arrow button goes down in the folder tree. A reset of the unit did not change this behavior. Scroll feature - when placed in Scroll Auto mode - the ID3 tags are supposed to scroll every five seconds - well they do and they don't. They will scroll if you have the Display set to show a tag, but if you have the display to show either the clock or the elasped time of the track - it only scrolls once and then goes to the time display. ID3 Tags - It only shows the Album, Artist and song title, no other tags. I would have liked it to have a menu and allow me to pick and choose what tags to display along with file and folder names as well. The old Pioneer showed more. Since it is a digital media player I would have thought it should behave like most personal MP3 players when using a thumb drive. But it doesn't. Will not allow you to pick a genre, playlist, artist, albums, or songs. Yes you can scroll through the folders on the thumb drive - attempting to find what you want - but if you are using a 16gig thumb drive it will take some time. Though you really should be watching the road. Only supports WMA and MP3 formats on the thumb drive. If you like WAV, FLAC or OGG format - sorry they won't play. (continued in pros and cons)

Pros: I understand it takes time to build the database (my mp3 players anyway) and that may be why JVC chose not to have this unit behave like an mp3 player. Though they could have set the unit to begin playing a song from the thumb drive while the database was being created. If you only intend to use it with your mp3 player then it will probably be OK for you. Otherwise pay closer attention to what the manual has to say.

This unit was just what i was looking for. I needed a stereo that would play my Ipod and charge it at the same time and I found it. I have been using it for about 3 weeks now and no problems. If you are looking for an inexpensive upgrade to your factory stereo this is the one, it works great and installed easy. I installed it into my F-150 in about 45 minutes and my next upgrade will be my door speakers, cant wait for that. Thank you Crutchfield for throwing in the mounting kit and wiring harness.

Pros: Easy to Install, Great Sound, Love the Ipod controls

The JVC KD-X40 is an all-in-one media center with everything you need to keep the party moving down the road. The usb feature alone was the factor that sold me on this unit but when I discovered that it had rca outputs, sound EQ, ipod display and controls, and a light price tag I just knew that this unit was the one for me. Look no further....Buy the JVC KD-X40. You will not be disappointed.

Pros: IPOD display and controls, RCA output connections for adding additional amps, sound EQ, plenty of power, various color display configurations, and lots lots more.

    Cons: none.

For the price its not too bad but you get what you pay for. The EQ isnt very easy to use, you can set a custome preset EQ but you cant just adjust it on the have to go adjust your custom preset EQ or use one of the build in EQ settings like "Base", "vocal" "flat" etc.. You also cant adjust the speaker output from Left to right or front to back which I need for my kids (in our van). The USB input is good for ipods and iphones but it doesnt work with my Android phone so I need to connect it to the Auxiliary input. If you use Pandora it is ok but you cant thumbs up or thumbs down a song, just skip and pause/play. The install was easy in my 2000 Honda Odyssey, took about 1hr with the install kit from crutchfield. I do wish I spent about $20 or $30 more for a little better deck...this deck is sleek but sacrifices some functionality.

I honestly cant remember the last time I purchased a CD. The deck was a perfect replacement from the factory deck in my Jeep. Easy instalation. A little disappointed in the remote. Doesnt give you full control. I did have to read the owners manual once to figure it all out, but that's why it came with one! Plenty of imputs. Built in high/low pass filter if you add a sub. If only the face detached!!! Then again, if someone steals it, I'm only out this much.

    Pros: inexspensive

Plays all my mp3s on a usb drive. No more cds! Variable colors that can be adjusted for day and night use. I just let the colors change by themselves instead of setting it to one color. It's like having a nightclub in my car lol. Read the manual so you know how to preset the radio stations. You'll be confused if you don't. Other than that I recommend this digital media receiver.

Pros: Variable colors. Plays mp3s instantly. Easy to use.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I really enjoy this radio I have it for my 93 honda accord ex. It was hard finally figuring out what my issue was by first taking out my stock radio but after that it was great. I hooked this up to my two 12' dual subs and 3000 watt amp. The color changing gets everyone's attention in the car first and then when you set your ipod on with some subs on. Just amazing, I get a lot of compliments with this. It came with installing guide and kit for free so that was a BIG bonus. Crutchfield is where to go I had an issue with my order (ship me wrong install guide kit) No big deal it only took 2 days to get here and since then I've been jamming out. I love having a eye turner, I recommend it unless your going for 3 aux plug ins (red and white ports) Other then that its overall a good radio my money well spent and coming to Crutchfield if I am in need of anything else. A+++++++++++

Pros: Loaded with controls, view of it is just solid without it hooked up. Ability to have a solid color or a flow of all the colors is great. (About 40 different colors so your set) Easy hook up and the remote comes with so defeats anybody touching the radio or avoid switching channels while driving.

Cons: A better menu display kinda gets annoying going back and forth after changing something just to experiment it. Not a big issue!

The JCV KD-X40 is a great disappointment. It does produce half-decent sound, but its design is so bad that I am seriously considering taking it out and tossing it in the garbage can. You need to understand the purpose behind the design choices; JVC (or whoever manufactured it) made it as flashy and cool looking as possible, regardless of how impractical that made it to use. Doing the simplest things, like setting a pre-set station, is so bizarre and non-intuitive that it simply can't be done without the most amazing stroke of luck or having the instruction manual permanently mounted to the dash.

Pros: It has flashing disco lights in a hundred colors and looks like it's from the 22nd century

Cons: It will make you want to become Amish ...because using anything with electricity will remind you of this car stereo.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I wanted to replace the cheap factory unit in my 2006 Subaru WRX and get rid of all those CDs, I found this unit and it had some great reviews. I don't have an iPhone because work makes me carry a Blackberry (not carrying two phones!). The Pandora works on the Blackberry, but not through the USB. I knew it was a long shot, so no surprise there. I am able to play my phone through the Front Aux though. My phone doesn't work as a USB drive either, but I knew that was a possibility - One plus though is that the port does charge my phone, so I am happy with that. The sound quality is much better than the stock radio (even with stock speakers) and the ability to have an Aux/USB and BlueTooth are a HUGE upgrade. I can keep all my music on an 8 GB flash drive and never have to mess with CDs again! It isn't too difficult to learn how to use it and program buttons. The Directions were easy to follow The only items I wish it had are: HD Radio, support for more devices than just the iPhone, removable faceplate and the pocket that came with it didn't work right.

Pros: All of the color options are cool! USB, AUX, (optional BT), Expandable Subwoofer and AMP options

Cons: Took off points for it not working with devices other than Apple (iPhone) - that would have made it really cool! And it doesn't have a removable face plate.

I finally got tired of the static with the FM converter I was using to play my iPod in my car. I was looking at one of the wired adapters, but then I saw this unit. At least for my vehicle, installation of this vs one of the adapter was only a few screws. (The dash panel had to be removed for both). Installation was a snap with the supplied harness adapter. Great price combined with free shipping and wiring harness makes this an easy choice.

Pros: A great product a much better way to upgrade than keeping the factory system and installing an adapter. This unit sounds much better than the factory, even while keeping the factory speakers.

Cons: A little bit of a learning curve to master the controls, but had it down in a day or two.

Cons: 1. Fail to control from wheel - basically volume - in my 2004 Jeep Liberty Ltd. 2. Bass sound out from speakers is too strong - I can always hear murmur. I traditionally only stick with a few of the top most popular brands of head units out there but I saw this JVC on sale and figured I would give it a shot. First off, it is a digital media receiver only so if you need to play CD's look elsewhere; for me this was a plus. As soon as I finished installation into my vehicle the first thing I noticed was that this is a very nice looking unit. I am very picky about car stereos and a lot of the other models available are really gaudy and look like a carnival ride in your car. This JVC has very clean lines and is quite simple which was to my liking. I plugged in my iPhone to get an initial listen of this head unit and I must say I was quite impressed. Blown away would be a better term for how shocked I was at the quality of sound that this unit put out. I have owned head units 4 times the price of this one before and I really think this one sounds just as good. As I dove more into the menus to customize it I became even more impressed. The color display options are fantastic and I have mine setup to show white in the day and then a cool purple at night. I will admit that the menus can be quite cumbersome to navigate initially but once you get the hang of them it isn't so bad. All in all I will say this JVC represents one of the best values I have ever seen in a car stereo. I have had numerous friends who were floored when I told them how much I paid for it. JVC, you have a hit!

Pros: Value Good Looks Sound Quality Versatility with connectivity options (front and rear aux inputs)

Cons: Menus can be sort of confusing initially Remote control is TINY

    Cheap! Easy! Quality!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this Head Unit a few weeks ago because of the price, done and shipped. I was slightly worried, as I have heard not so great things about JVC, but after seeing this head unit as rated the "best buy" and "great quality for price" I had to buy it. I bought it, installed it in less than an hour, and have loved it since. The only thing I'm not very fond of, is that the menu options are a little hard to get too if you didn't know what you were doing. I'm a guy, who almost NEVER looks at manuals and instruction books. So when I was trying to figure out how to change colors and turn the demo off, I was having slight trouble. Then dropped the act and read the book ;)

Pros: Can control music on iphone from either HEAD UNIT or the IPHONE. Cheap, Nice sound quality, Looks great, Can change colors however I want. Connects to Ipod/Iphone/Ipad. And the remote is a cool feature I would have NEVER thought I would use or even like.

Cons: Menu system is difficult to use while on the go.. Easy if you have time to stop and play around though. Just a learning curve.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a nice stereo that does just about everything I was wanting and expecting to do, and the wiring of the installation was very easy. My first radio install ever. I have a small issue now and again if my battery dies on my truck the stereo reports "miswiring," I simply disconnect my stereo and wait a minute to plug it back in and it is fine as long as the battery does not die.

Pros: Loud and Crisp sound, recognizes most of my music files no problem. The amp is amazing in it

Cons: The finicky nature of "miswiring" report is a little annoying.

    Inexpensive in-dash radio.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Inexpensive, attractive and does what I wanted it to do. Needed a radio to accept thumb drives with Mp3 music for my ol' truck. Works well and sounds just fine. Lack of "preset buttons" was a little confusing (OK a lot confusing) but once I got the hang of it the set up went fine. I did have to default it and start over once but the light did finally come on and now all is good. "Ease of use" rating is above average but if there was an "Ease of set up" attribute it would have been "lower than average".

Pros: USB port, easy fit - even in older truck like mine, adequate equalizer and personalization abilities.

Cons: Set up instructions a little sparce for an old guy like me but after I finally whipped the drop down menus and figured out how to set the "presets" it works well.

This media receiver was bought so I could more easily interface my iPod. It works great, charges the iPod while I drive and listen. Never had to touch the manual, super intuitive. Ipod control can be via the iPod or via the head. Equalizer button was much nicer than something in the menu. Also tried a flash key with 16gb of music in the USB port and that worked great. Super light weight without all the mechanics. Who needs a CD, DVD, Cassette or 8-track these days?

    Pros: easy to use

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Can't beat the bang for the buck with this unit. I originally wanted Bluetooth but am fine plugging my phone into the unit because the phone would be plugged into car charger anyway. Install took only a few minutes and the radio looks and sounds great! Controls are not super intuitive but a quick look through the manual helped. The only complaint I have is that the mounting carriage wiggles in the car kit. Not much, about half a millimeter, but enough that I notice the unit move when pressing buttons. Nobody else notices. I would recommend this unit to anyone.

Pros: Value. Charges iPhone. Pandora controls on head unit.

Cons: No preset buttons. Initially awkward controls.

Pros: Easy to install and use. Nifty display colors.

Cons: It's feels a little cheaply made, but this likely because there just isn't much to the unit (there doesn't need to be).

Nice basic stereo. I didn't want to be bothered with CDs and cassettes anymore. Get a small usb thumb and it doesen't stick out like a sore thumb. The only thing missing on this unit is an SC slot. A few buttons for the presets would be nice but there aren't many stations I listen to so if my favorite stations are the first five or seven it ok-- Iwouldn't use any more anyway.

Pros: Good sound. Its not a powerfull stereo but has enough power for me. You can set the sound flat or however you want it so you can get the sound you like.

Cons: If you have a lot of music on the USB it might command a little attention to get from one selection to another. It is not bad thought just don't let it distract you from driving.

I love this radio I just got it hooked up today and i could tell that their was a difference in the sound quality. ( my old headunit was a sony xplode) unlike before it sounded very clear my mids do not distort when i cranked it up to turn the bass all the way up on my subs which is great. i love the fact that it has so many colors to choose from it looks great. this is a great buy especially since it is a little cheaper than most of the radios with USB and AUX ports.

Pros: looks great, get a better signal on some channels, charges ipod/ phone verry well.

Cons: i looks like its built well but it is very lite, but im sure that just because it has no CD player.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Replaced the dead factory unit in my Explorer. The included kit and adapters made it easy, and sounds really good, even with the 1996 factory speakers and amp. USB playability is a big factor for me. Who needs CDs anymore? No moving parts to fail, and as long as you aren't a cro-magnon with the buttons, it works great, even on these bumpy Louisiana roads. Vibration has been the downfall of most of the stereos I've owned, so having no CD or cassette mechanism is great. Look up the Sandisk Fit line of USB storage, and you won't even have to worry about an extension cord. I've now got 32GB (something like 5500 songs) of music and the thing barely sticks out of the USB port. Once you play around with the menus a bit, it can be configured for almost anything. Minor learning curve.

Pros: Value - Cant beat options and looks for the price.

Cons: Minor learning curve for menus, there are almost too many options.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Replaced a 2002 Honda Civic cassette system. Didn't want a CD player but wanted a system that would play songs from my iPhone via the USB port in front. Great value because you are not paying for the CD player. Nice features built in and the flexibility to upgrade to Bluetooth if desired. You can play your music through the AUX port but you can connect your iPhone through the USB port and charge your phone battery at the same time. Using Apples 4S system, Siri you can request songs from your iPhone Library by voice which is a nice feature. If you have your songs on a USB flash drive (MP3) this is a great way to play them. The sound is great and looks good. The install kit and wiring made a nice clean install and with the detailed instructions ( and Crutchfield phone support) I was comfortable with the process. As suggested, make sure you have the right wiring harness before you start the project. As for the unit itself the instructions for operation are a little complicated but the learning curve is quick and with the different lighting controls colors you can match your system to dash gauge colors if you wish. With the color flow options you can have your own light show if you wish. 18 FM and 6 AM button presets make the unit easy enough for my wife to use the receiver with ease. With the included remote key fob you can control the unit without touching the receiver itself. All in all this is a great receiver for those who want to move up to digital music.

Pros: Many features for a great value and the ability to expand later as needed. Great sound with factory speakers but I bet a new set of speakers will make it sound even better. With user option settings you can make it look and sound just the way you want. Included remote allows control of unit without removing your eyes from the road. USB front port charges iPhones, iPods with ease with or without their use at the time. A simple flash drive can hold and play your music with this receiver.

Cons: None (but in the bright California sun the unit's readout display can be hard to see at times)

This reciever is unbelievably capable for the price. More features than could be imagined were available in a low cost device. It is very well made and brings in channels I could never get before! I put it in my kids 1996 Dodge Stratus to replace the factory clunker that had died. It is ten times better! Installation was extremely easy with great guides. - Shout out to Clarence at Crutchfield who was incredibly helpful in assisting in selection of this reciever. He helped zero in on what was most important to have. Just a note on installation - the mounting adapter had to be cut out and they recommend using an Exacto or other razor cutter. Too tedious. I used a fine toothed hacksaw blade (just the blade) and filed smoothly through the material and had the whole thing done in about a minute. Also the use of the Crutchfield supplied wire harness made this nearly foolproof!

Pros: - Excellent features - rich in capabilities - Excellent price - Very straightforward installation - Looks INCREDIBLY cool compared to the dinosaur that was in there - Crutchfield adapters and wire harnesses were PERFECT and made the install job a snap

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Replaced the factory radio in my 1995 Ford Ranger with this last weekend before a road trip to Eastern Washington. Even with stock speakers, the improvement in sound quality is very noticeable. The stereo itself is very easy to use, and even though it has plenty of options and features, the interface is still very simple and easy to use even when driving. Installation was fairly simple, but you do need either a soldering iron and electricians tape or a wire-stripper and wire-caps (a good thing to buy before you disconnect the battery from your truck). The only confusion came with the (free with the stereo, albiet) double to single DIN adapter. It feels like it is very cheaply made, and the stereo is slightly loose. If you have an option to shell out a couple extra dollars for a more secure adapter, I would go for it. Otherwise, it seems to hold up fine.

Pros: Good sound quality Ease of use

Cons: Front USB connection does not play andriod smartphones; must use aux connection to play music off my HTC phone. Usb still charges the phone however.

Most importantly, the unit lets you control iPhone playback from either the unit controls or the touchscreen when plugged in via USB. Other MFI units may force you to use their controls, which was a dealbreaker for me. The port even charges my GoPro camera at the track. This is exactly what I was looking for, and the cheapest to boot.

Pros: Great price, clean install, strong sound output, flexible iPod controls

Cons: No detachable face, dynamic EQ isn't great, radio presets not obvious, vario screen is a bit distracting at times.

Great value, but bluetooth requires additional part.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very satisfied with this unit. Installation was incredibly simple. I have no prior experience/knowledge with a car audio/electrical system but even without the directions, this is as simple as plug in chords that fit in the right place. Took me an hour to install in my 2000 VW Jetta. I don't have soldering equipment or crimping tools so I bought what Crutchfield suggested which was screw like caps that clamp wires together. Very secure and easy to use. This is my first time using crutchfield btw. I thought the user comments were fabricated by the website developers, but from my own experience I consider crutchfield to be on the same level of integrity as other major online retailers.

Pros: No CD player takes up less space in the dash. Remote control is more handy than you would think. you can keep your hand in your lap or on the wheel while adjusting the radio, volume, song, etc.

Cons: None so far at all. I am very satisfied with this unit.

    Thank you Crutchfield!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First time Crutchfield customer, and I gotta say, extremely happy and content with how the purchase ot this product went. I'm always weary about making purchases online, however, Crutchfield really sold me on this. Ordered the head unit, and within 2 business days received it and had it installed..... MYSELF! For the price, I'd be hard-pressed to find another head unit that could impress me like this one. I'm so glad I can finally say goodbye to cumbersome media such as CD's + cassettes that wear down or scratch over time.... I had to break down and join the rest of the human race in this new millenia and finally buy a Digital Media receiver. I used to like to mess around and try to do installs when I was younger, quickly found that I simply was not very good at it. So for the past few vehicles that I've owned I never tried to put an aftermarket head unit in them. This install was so simplistic, that I was tempted to go and tear my dash off just to do it was actually enjoyable. Needless to say, JVC's KD-x40 is a great product for me, and I'm a happy customer. Thank you Crutchfield!

Pros: Plenty of options; outstanding sound for the price; INSTALL WAS A BREEZE!

Cons: Since there were so many options with this head unit, I found it a little crazy at first to navigate.... I got used to it, so not really a an issue.

This is a nice head unit at a very reasonable price. The install was pretty easy even for someone like me who never installed a radio before. I don't listen to cds any more so this was perfect for me. It does everything I need it to do. It sounds good and looks good. It's also nice to be able to choose any color display you like. I'd say it was a good buy.

This is a better than average head unit for the price and features

Pros: Makes setting up the amp for the rear subs a breeze. Has excellent sound and the thousands of color options is pretty cool. This is my 3rd JVC and I won't buy any other brand. Crisp clear sound is a must for me.

Cons: None, its cheap in price not in quality, JVC has never let me down. If you want an awesome head unit at great price this is it.

    2003 Honda Civic
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently traded my car in to help the wife get a new car, so I inherited her 2003 Honda Civic. I wanted to get a receiver that gave me the option of using my iPod, and I didn't really have any use for a CD player, so this unit hit on all fronts...price, iPod use, and no CD player. I gave it a whirl, and with Crutchfield's install notes, the install was a breeze. I really like the receiver. It produces sound that is much better than the stock unit, looks very nice in the dash, and I have found it to be incredibly easy to use. I particularly like the ability to adjust the colors on the display so much. I was able to have it almost "fade" from the light green that is the color of the heater controls on the car, to a slightly darker green on the buttons of the receiver, to a very dark green for the display. It looks pretty cool going across the dash from light to dark green. I also found the controls pretty easy to use. Sure, it's going to take some getting used to when it comes to adjusting things, but overall the design seems pretty intuitive. I used to be big time into car audio back in the early 2000s. I am surprised by how many features and what level of quality can be had in a stereo for less than $100 these days. Back when I was buying (and selling at retail) CD players, decks with features like this one has would have cost upwards of $249.

Pros: Cool lighting, good sound, easy to use

Cons: No detachable face plate MIGHT be a con for some users

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My first concern when purchasing this radio was that I didn't want one with a detachable face. This is going in my school bus, and it would be a true test for any deck. Lots of jarring bumps, and dust, therefore the detachable face contacts didn't seem to hold up. Most of my other purchases were always a different brand, , but the salesman turned me on to this JVC Radio and I have been nothing but happy with it. I don't haul cd's around anymore but a jump drive with mp3's is easy. Even though this deck doesn't have a disc player in it, it has front and rear aux inputs and a front USB input. Rear RCA and sub outputs. The tuner pulled in stations I never got before, and the 20 watts rms is above a lot of the others in power. If you don't need a disc player, this is all you need. Plenty of options and easy to use. A lot of receiver for the money.

Pros: Strong tuner. Good power. Ease of use. Very reasonable price. 3 band parametric EQ. There aren't a lot of buttons, but the ones there are set up in such away that makes this very easy to use. Lots of display color options. Rear RCA and Sub outputs. Front & rear Aux, and front USB inputs.

    Cons: Haven't come across any.

The installation was flawless into my '92 Volvo 240. Thanks Crutchfield technical. The sound is great coming out of my car's original 4 door speakers. Reception is great on the AM-FM radio and I like the idea of not having a CD changer that I would never use. I don't have an IPOD or similar so have not yet had the occasion to use the USB port which is very convenient on the front of the unit. Very pleased with purchase.

Excellent for those of us who no longer use CD's. I alternate between Pandora on my 4s, a 16gb flash drive, and the radio. My only complaint is the knob doesn't stick out very far and there is no additional grip so it's difficult to use with gloves and sometimes a little troublesome without.

    iPod Control w/ Pandora

iPod/iPhone Direct: The JVC KD-X40's front-panel USB port also acts as an iPod/iPhone high-speed direct connection when used with the USB/iPod cable that came with your iPod/iPhone. An additional iPod cable is available (469USBPOD, sold separately) so you can leave one at home and one in the car. If you have an iPod nano (7th gen), iPod touch (5th gen), or iPhone 5; use the Lighting-to-USB cable that came with your Apple device to connect to the head unit. Using either cable allows audio playback, music navigation, information display, and charging of select iPod/iPhone models from the JVC in-dash head unit.

iPod DAC Bypass: The USB connection allows your iPod/iPhone's stored music to be loaded instantly to the head unit and sound quality to be maximized through the head unit's 24-bit D/A converter, allowing for a Signal to Noise ratio up to 80dB. The JVC head unit supports audio playback of music, podcasts, audiobooks, and music apps stored on your iPod or iPhone.

iPod/iPhone Control: You can choose to operate your iPod/iPhone through the JVC head unit's front-panel controls, from its clickwheel/touchscreen, or via a streamed app from your iPhone.

    • Head Unit: From the head unit's front-panel controls you can search for music by Playlist, Artist, Album, Song, Podcast, Genre, and Composer. Once a Playlist or Category is selected, the content is listed in alphabetical order. The KD-X40 also supports Repeat (file/all) and Random (album/all) playback functions of your iPod/iPhone.
    • iPod: You can choose to navigate your iPod or iPhone's stored music from its clickwheel or touchscreen, like you are accustomed to during normal usage.
    • External (App Mode): External Mode lets you enjoy audio content from your downloaded music Apps (such as iHeartRadio, SiriusXM,, Rhapsody, & Slacker) and driver assistant Apps (such as Trapster) streamed to your Apple iPhone, through the JVC KD-X40. You will continue to use your iPhone's touchscreen to navigate and view your apps; the head unit will only display the clock and "EXT Mode".

Note: Access to your iPhone's downloaded application will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone to connect to the Internet.

Pandora App: The Pandora App (free) lets you play music from the Pandora music service through the JVC KD-X40 using your connected Apple iPhone, via the USB/iPod connector cable (included with your iPhone). The JVC KD-X40 provides control over the Pandora music service and displays Artist, Album, and Song information. You can select Pandora stations from your station list; you can sort the station list by date or A-Z. You can also skip song tracks within a station. In addition, you can also give songs a thumbs up/down and bookmark songs/artists. To access Pandora you must have an Apple iPhone (iOS3 or later) with the latest version of the Pandora application from Apple's iTunes App Store. Your iPhone will need an active Data Plan account with connection to the Internet via 3G, EDGE, or WiFi. You will also need a Pandora music service account.

Note: Access to the Pandora service will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone to connect to the Internet. Pandora is not supported in Canada and only available in the United States.

iPod Display: The KD-X40 will display your iPod/iPhone's music file information, when in Head Unit and iPod mode (not in External mode), or listening to Pandora Internet Radio. The head unit can display Track number, Elapsed playing time, Artist name, Song title, and Album label.

iPod Charging: The head unit's USB connection provides 1A of current to power and charge your connected iPod/iPhone when your vehicle's ignition switch is set to the 'ACC' or 'On' position. This unit does not charge the iPad. If your iPod/iPhone has no initial battery charge, then the unit will not recognize it.

Note: Apple iPod/iPhone software updates may change functionality results. If you download a newer software version, you may need to reset the head unit and your iPod/iPhone to regain functionality. If this doesn't work, you may need to wait until a newer software update is available.

    Dual Auxiliary Inputs

Dual Auxiliary Inputs: A front-panel & rear-panel stereo minijack are provided to allow the connection of portable audio sources. Simply connect your portable digital music player to either the unit's front or rear auxiliary input, and you can listen to the audio from the portable player through the speakers in your mobile audio system.

Simultaneous Connection: The front-panel & rear-panel auxiliary connections are separate (independent) inputs, so you can connect two portable audio devices at once to the JVC head unit and select between sources. You can turn the front- and rear-panel auxiliary inputs On or Off.

    Optional Bluetooth

Optional Bluetooth: The unit's rear-panel auxiliary input can also be used to connect JVC's KS-BTA100 Bluetooth Adapter (105KSBTA10, sold separately). The KS-BTA100 must be plugged into the rear-panel auxiliary input, and not the front-panel auxiliary input. The front-panel auxiliary input does not support Bluetooth. The KS-BTA100 gives you hands-free communication from your compatible Bluetooth mobile phone and wireless streaming audio from a Bluetooth enabled digital audio player. The optional JVC Bluetooth Adapter includes a super-sensitive microphone, an Answer/End button, and playback controls. The KD-X40 can be set to automatically mute any music audio to your vehicle's speakers so you can listen to your telephone call using your car speakers.

Note: Not all Bluetooth devices will be compatible. Visit the JVC Mobile Entertainment Bluetooth Support Page for a complete list of compatible Bluetooth enabled devices.

    AM/FM Tuner

AM/FM Tuner: The JVC KD-X40 features a built-in AM/FM tuner with manual, seek, and preset tuning.

Preset Tuning: You can store a total of 18 FM stations presets and 6 AM station presets. The radio allows you to set your AM/FM stations manually or automatically.

Radio Timer: You can tune into a preset station at a specific time regardless of the head unit's current source. You can activate the Radio Timer once, daily, or turn it completely off.

IF Filter: You can also switch the tuner's IF filter to Wide or Auto to increase/decrease the sensitivity.

Mono: If an analog FM stereo broadcast is hard to receive, you can manually switch the tuner to Mono operation.

US/European Tuning: You can set the built-in AM/FM tuner between US standard and European tuning spacing.

    Audio Section

24 Bit D/A Converter: The JVC KD-X40 utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The KD-X40 is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the KD-X40 are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the KD-X40 are as follows:

    • CEA2006 Specs: 20 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (200 total watts)

Amplifier Gain Control: When you are using the KD-X40 with factory speakers (or those rated to less than 50 watts peak), the Amplifier Gain Control can limit the amount of power being sent to those speakers. When the Amp Gain Control is set to "low," the volume control ranges from 0 (minimum) to 30 (maximum). When using speakers rated higher than 50 watts peak, you can set the Amp Gain Control to "high," and the volume control will range from 0 to 50.

Volume Adjust: The input level of each source (other than FM) is adjustable relative to the FM radio volume, so there isn't a significant volume difference when changing sources. Each source is individually adjustable from -5 to +5.

Pro EQ: The KD-X40 is equipped with JVC's Pro EQ. The integrated equalizer offers 7 preset sound modes (Flat, Natural, Dynamic, Vocal Boost, Bass Boost, User) suitable for the music genre of your choice. The User mode allows you to manually adjust the head unit's 3-band parametric EQ (Frequency, Level, and Q-Factor).

    Pro EQ
    Frequency Level Q
    Bass 60, 80, 100, 200 Hz +/- 12 dB (-6 to +6) 1.0, 1.25, 1.5, 2.0
    Midrange 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.5 kHz +/- 12 dB (-6 to +6) 0.75, 1.0, 1.25
    Treble 10.0, 12.5, 15.0, 17.5 khz +/- 12 dB (-6 to +6) Fixed

Source Link EQ: This feature allows you to store Pro EQ bass, middle and treble tone settings for each source (AM/FM, Aux, USB, iPod, and Pandora).

Loud (Loudness): This feature boosts low and high frequencies to produce a well-balanced sound at a low volume level. You can turn this feature on or off.

2.5V/4CH Preamp Output: The KD-X40 is equipped with two pair of 2.5V preamp outputs (Front, Rear/SW). You can set the Rear/SW preamp outputs for connecting a pair of full-range rear speakers (through an external amplifier) or for connecting a subwoofer (through an external amplifier). When set for rear speakers, the rear outputs operate with the unit's fader control. When set for subwoofer, the outputs are non-fading.

Subwoofer Controls: When the unit's Rear/SW preamp output is set to Subwoofer, you can adjust the head unit's subwoofer level between 0 to 8 (separate from the main volume level). You can also adjust the low-pass filter and activate a high-pass filter.

    • Low-Pass Filter: When the unit's Rear/SW preamp output is set to Subwoofer, you can set the cutoff frequency of the low-pass filter at 55Hz, 85Hz, or 120Hz.
    • High-Pass Filter: When the unit's Rear/SW preamp output is set to Subwoofer, you can also activate a high-pass filter (fixed at low-pass filter frequency) for the unit's front & rear channels (speaker- or preamp-level), so low frequency signals are cut off from your system's front & rear speakers.

Key-Touch Tone: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

    Display Features

Variable Color LCD & Key Illumination: The JVC KD-X40 features 29 color presets for the LCD and button illumination. You can choose one of these color presets or select the ColorFlow mode which scrolls through all 29 color presets. Additionally, there is a User preset, allowing you to individually adjust the intensity of Red, Green, and Blue from 0 to 31; resulting in approximately 30,000 custom color options. The chosen color preset or custom color can be applied to the display panel and the backlighting for all the buttons. You can choose to use the same color for the LCD display and button illumination, or use a separate color for each one. You can also select a different color for daytime and nighttime in regards to the unit's LCD and button illumination.

Brightness: The unit offers an adjustable display and button illumination brightness level (0-31) for day and nighttime driving.

Display/Button Illumination Dimmer: The display/button illumination dimmer can be set to Off (normal brightness at all times), On (display/button illumination is always dimmed), or Auto (display dims when 12-volts is applied to the orange/white illumination lead).

Mounting Angle: For proper operation, you must install the unit within 30-degrees of horizontal.

    Remote Control

Wireless Remote Control: The KD-X40 comes supplied with a wireless remote control (RM-RK52). The remote contains Attenuator, Sound, Source, Tracking, and Volume functions. The remote operates off of a single CR2025 3V Lithium-cell battery (included).

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input wire (blue/yellow) within the included wiring harness that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately).
