Our take on the JVC KW-AV70BT

Maximize your screen, baby — the 7" display on JVC's KW-AV70BT DVD receiver gives you plenty of touchscreen real estate to play your iPod, run apps, and access your Pandora® Internet Radio stations. You'll see plenty of info at a glance, plus gain easy touchscreen control over your in-dash entertainment. If you find the lights distracting, you can set the screen to stay black until your hand approaches, activating the display. Plus you can detach the face and take it with you for safe-keeping — a rarity for a screen this size.

Awesome detachable touchscreen

Maximize your screen, baby — the 7" display on JVC's KW-AV70BT DVD receiver gives you plenty of touchscreen real estate to play your iPod, run apps, and access your Pandora® Internet Radio stations. You'll see plenty of info at a glance, plus gain easy touchscreen control over your in-dash entertainment. If you find the lights distracting, you can set the screen to stay black until your hand approaches, activating the display. Plus you can detach the face and take it with you for safe-keeping — a rarity for a screen this size.

Listen to iPhone® apps, plus enjoy basic control

If apps are your thing, you iPhone lovers can use the KW-AV70BT's beautiful screen to enjoy them in your car. With your iPhone connected, you can get basic control over audio apps like Mog and Tunein — basic functions like play/pause or track up/down. You can also view the info from Inrix traffic and other useful driving apps.

Play your Pandora® stations in the car

JVC makes it easy for you to take your Pandora stations on the road. Just plug in your iPhone® to the KW-AV70BT's rear USB input and you'll have touchscreen control over Pandora right in your dash. Plus you'll see artist and song info on the big display.

Powerful GPS app for iPhone

You can use your iPhone to put the most up-to-date maps available in your dash. When you download the MotionX-GPS Drive app and connect your iPhone with JVC's KS-U30 cable (not included), you'll be able to see maps and live traffic reports on the KW-AV70BT's screen. You'll still need to access your iPhone, however, so it's a good idea to turn over control to a passenger, or consider adding an iPhone mount.

Unlike factory navigation systems, points of interest (POIs) are integrated with Wikipedia and Facebook, giving you more accurate search results than with preloaded navigation. Throw in live traffic and live map updates, and you'll have the most accurate navigation system on the planet. At 99 cents for the app, plus $19.99 for a year's subscription for voice guidance and live traffic, it's a fantastic value, too.

Bluetooth® included

Bluetooth in your car is better than ever — especially when you team it up with a sweet 7" touchscreen. Pair up your compatible phone, and you'll be able to talk hands-free, place outgoing calls, and even get a heads up when someone sends you a text message. Plus, you can stream music from your phone or other Bluetooth device, including the audio from your favorite apps.

Great for your digital music

Once you plug your iPod or iPhone into the USB input, you can use this JVC's responsive touchscreen to tap your way through all your tunes and playlists. If you're not an iPod user, you can load up a USB drive or a recordable disc with digital files — it's easy to fit hundreds of tracks on either one, and you can still dive in using the touchscreen.

— over 15 million songs, available instantly

MOG is an award-winning online music service with one of the largest and best-sounding streaming catalogs in the industry. It's the only service to offer all of its music in the 320 kbps MP3 format — that higher bit rate translates to better sound. In fact, we use it frequently in the Crutchfield Labs to test high-end audio gear. MOG's "Primo" service ($9.99/month) gives you unlimited, ad-free access to their extensive music library of over 15 million songs on a wide range of devices including Sonos® and Logitech® Squeezebox™ network music players, Samsung TVs, your computer, iPad®, iPhone®, and Android™ devices. Just pair your iPhone to this JVC receiver, and you can control the music and view artist/song info on the JVC's screen.

Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the JVC, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Cons: to long to read SD card

If your looking for an all around great touch screen radio..your definitely getting what you pay for! This has had so many comments by my friends and they resolution is amazing. The resolutions on most touch screens is poor but this one is HD looking! Produces a great sound to even stock speakers. You can notice a difference in the bass, mid and high. This is an amazing radio for the perfect price! Crutch field was fast on delivery and I had one tech call that wasn't nothing but helpful!

Pros: No turn dials, great resolution, great sound output, easy to use, Bluetooth that I use for Pandora, the ability to personalize it, great touch screen!

Cons: This radio is perfect so no flaws!

    Good with notable exceptions

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The unit looks and sounds good. It is installed in a 2000 Tundra ( with no steering wheel controls ). Installation was straight forward. Whoever designed the user interface for this unit needs some serious feedback! You will have to keep the manual in the car because nothing is intuitive. Finding things in the menu system is ok once you learn the arcane approach. Information about what is playing or what station is scrolled along the top in a very small line rather than the 7" screen real estate. I will be hooking up a rear view camera later. My unit had a problem where it came from the factory with the manufacturing mode still turned on. This caused the unit to display "Production Mode" in a large blue bar on every screen. Thanks to Crutchfield support, I now have the fix.

Pros: Nice looking. Good sound. Customizable background. Tiltable panel.

Cons: Display doesn't show much. No direct tune of the radio without buying the optional remote. Unit doesn't come on how it was turned off. I have to select tuner every time I start the car. IPad/iPhone controls don't let you find/choose anything. Their is only ability to skip by artist, album, or songs. Finding a song out of 8000+ this way is painful.

    Bad Steering Wheel Controls

Gonchar from Leesburg, VA on 1/17/2013

This JVC unit is pretty good, but I will be returning it and going with the comparable Pioneer head unit. All was good when I first got the unit installed. It sounded good for the money and operated pretty well and had intuitive operation and navigation. The problem comes in at the steering wheel controls. If your car has a button or buttons to navigate the radio tuner or satellite radio presets then this will not work with this JVC HU. Instead it just scans to the next station which is essentially useless. This forces one to have to push the preset buttons on the touch screen to navigate the presets which can be dangerous when driving at highway speeds. I used the recommended Axxess steering wheel control interface and programmed it correctly. I contacted both Axxess and JVC and found that I had done everything right. JVC just told me that some stock steering wheel controls are lost when you replace a stock HU and acted like this should have been anticipated by me and should be acceptable to me. I assure you that this is not the case if you get the right HU. JVC said that that they would not even consider a software upgrade to fix this problem that is common to all cars with steering wheel controls. I found this extremely frustrating and unreasonable of JVC. Note that the preset buttons do work to skip to the next track on CDs or on your connected iPod/iPhone. If the navigation of the presets in radio tuner or satellite radio modes are not important to you then

Pros: Sound, display options, intuitive, appearance

Cons: Unable to work with steering wheel controls to navigate presets in radio tuner mode or satellite radio mode, No HD Radio

Some one at JVC and Crutchfield need to mention that YOU WILL HAVE NO VIDEO DISPLAY OF YOUR APPS like drivetime GPS on this unit. This needs to be in bold print and plastered all over the product info so people aren't suckered into purchasing the unit !!!!!

    Great upgrade...

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After trying the Kenwood DDX719 first (no customizable screen colors - only hard buttons), I did a little more research and found this JVC that had a few more bells and whistles. I am still discovering what this unit can do, but overall, it looks great in my 2012 Xterra Pro 4X. The Rockford Fosgate stock unit sounded great, but the ipod / sirusXM integration was very outdated. The sound quality is improved over the stock unit, because I am still using the 9 speakers and the factory amp but with a little more control. Installing this unit was very easy with the instructions included (and a few forum posts). I purchased this unit with the XM unit and the JVC AV cable for the ipod, and all work flawlessly, and I also added 2 RCA filters to cut the alternator whine (highly recommended).

Pros: Customizable screen colors Ease of use - although there are a lot of features that you need to read about Option to have screen turn off when it is timed out (nice for driving at night). Motion sensor turns it back on when your hand gets close. iPhone integration (4S running 6.01) FYI - New apple maps app is not recognized Pandora Conrol Motion X GPS integration (have to pay the $29 extra to Motion X) Crutchfield customer service and return policy.

Cons: If I had to say something bad, it would be screen resolution, but DVD's look pretty good overall.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Previously installed 4 Rockford Fosgate P1652-S speakers in F-150 Super Crew. As expected the OEM head unit was not powerful enough on its own to drive the speakers to a good performance. Didn't want to purchase a power amp so was looking for a HU to drive the speakers without additional equipment. Did a lot of research on units available for what I was wanting in a HU. Past experience with JVC units made me partial to them when looking. It appeared the JVC KV-AV70BT would meet my requirements. The old OEM unit recognized MP3 and m4a formats without problem from a flash drive. This JVC HU does not recognize the m4a format when using the USB port or the SD port. Got an old iPod touch out and updated it with my favorite songs. Plugged into rear USB port. Everything worked but the audio. The user manual addresses this problem BUT every time I got to a certain point the next necessary step was ghosted. Unplugged Sync system output jacks from the Aux Input of the HU, reset the HU, ran through the steps to fix the problem again and this time the ghosting was gone and the procedure worked as explained in the manual. iPod now working and sounding great through rear USB input. I don't think this problem would have existed with the purchase of the iPhone(Pod) cable but I had no need for video which is the added benefit of this cable. I really like this unit but it does have some limitations that I felt should have been incorporated for the price.

Pros: Local dealer wanted $1,250 for the same equipment and installation AFTER a $210 price break. Crutchfield price for the same equipment after reward point application was half of that and installed it myself. Quite a savings. For my musical taste this unit sounds great without power amp and really brought the RF Punch speakers to life. Equalizer functions allow you to go from very general to extremely specific. Found the menu's mostly intuitive. Spent very little time in the Instruction manual.

Cons: Voice calling recognition on this JVC BT is the worse I have ever experienced. (Using the same phone that worked great with voice commands with the Sync system) It is totally unusable. Most settings on initial setup and station presets cannot be saved so every time a loss of power or reset occurs you must spend additional time setting up the unit again. Although album art is available through the connected SiriusXM SXV200V1 satellite tuner the AV70BT will not accommodate it.

This is the best head unit I've every owned. You get a lot of features for the money here. The picture quality of DVD's, after making adjustments is incredible. The sound quality is amazing. (So good I still haven't put in the speakers I bought with the head unit, the stocks sound so good.) The blue tooth works unbelievably good. The regular radio is, like in other review weak when compared to the sound when using blue tooth, or my ipod directly but that is to be excepted. Pandora app is great its so nice to be able to listen to pandora in my car. Streaming is great and call quality is great too. I would say that this a great quality product. Crutchfield advisors were great too helped me get all i would need to run the stereo and still have use of my steering wheel controls and have the radio communicate with my databus. Love it.

    Pros: just about everything

Cons: am/fm radio can be weak at times.

    2009 Mazda 6
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I figured I write this up to help out others like me. I spent a couple of months on and off doing research and reading plenty of reviews. Ultimately they played a key role in my decision. Thank you Crutchfield for answering a bunch of questions which also helped with the decision. I installed this unit in a 2009 Mazda 6, to upgrade stock, non Bose radio. I use this car for commuting to work, so although navigation was desired, it was not a primary motivator. An HD radio would have been a bonus, although also not a requirement. I wanted a SiriusXM capability, as well as something that worked well with my iPhone 4s. A Bluetooth was a must. I considered several other units from Sony, Alpine, and Pioneer. No matter what unit I came close to selecting, there was always something wrong. My front runner was Pioneer AVH-P8400. However, a number of reviews said it was freezing up and at times was sluggish in responding. You had to turn off the car and restart it. Not something I wanted to do while on the freeway. Alpine and Sony units were priced more than $200 over this one, and had a number of limitations. For example, neither one supported apps with the exception of Pandora. Well, Sony does, but you need a Nokia phone with Symbian OS to work with Sony's MirrorLink. I don't know anyone in the US who owns one of these phones. Galaxy S III does not have DriveLink available in the US either. No other phones, including Apple support it. So much for MirrorLink.

Pros: Reasonable price. Responsive touch screen. Good Bluetooth support. Good quality SiriusXM sound. Supported apps for iPhone 4s - music, video, and navigation.

Cons: Built-in radio sound quality is poor. User inteface is not very good and could be improved. Although in all fairness it's on par with most radios out there. The EQ is difficult to use.

    2005 Chevy SSR Install

Shadowman from Norfolk, VA on 10/10/2012

I installed this in a 2005 Chevy SSR even though Crutchfield didn't recommend it. You can use a Crux interface adapter to retain your steering wheel controls and warniing chimes even though they say you will lose them. It is a tight fit, but it looks great installed, i would say like factory. I can't say enough good things about it, it is soo easy to use and just sounds fantastic. The tilting screen is cool, allows you to eliminate glare sometimes. I installed the Sirious module and tne iPod adapter. You can add a backup camera, but I chose not to. I had a Pioneer previously that cost double this price and did not sound nearly as good. I,have the Bose system and it interfaced well with the amp and speakers and it sounds way better than the factory head unit. Everything worked perfectly. Go for it, this is a great stereo, you won't regret it.

Pros: Easy to use, looks and sounds great

    Cons: None

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is my first aftermarket radio and radio install so I don't have anything to compare it to. However, this unit runs exactly how I expected. There is a instant sound improvement from the stock stereo. There have been no glitches or anything. It has a motion sensor that activates the screen when my hand gets close... also to turn up the volume your just turn your finger clockwise on the screen or counter-clockwise to turn the volume down which is a sweet feature. The app features work as expected, can watch youtube and netflix from the unit, as well as hear turn-by-turn directions over the speakers from my navigation app. You do need the Iphone cable to utilize these features but it is well worth the extra cash. The bluetooth mic works great, everyone says I come in relatively clear. I mounted the mic up on the top of my A-pillar. Thought this would be hard, but was actually one of the easiest parts of the install. Choosing songs from the ipod is really easy and quick. Screen is crisp and awesome. For the price, motorized screen, great app capability, SD card input, and unique features (volume control and motion sensor) I don't know why you would choose others in the same price range. Does everything you would want it to do.

Pros: Motorized screen, bluetooth works great, app capability, unique features, easy install with Crutchfield support, clear screen

Cons: 1. Sometimes for Pandora to load I have to unplug my Iphone then replug it in. 2. Radio is a little weak, but if it bothers you can upgrade with HD adapter. 3. My girlfriend wants me to put one in her car now.

Simply the best radio I've come to own, and believe me i've been through alot of radios. This unit made my factory Bose system sound like a concert hall, just awesome! Crisp clean highs and punchy no distortion lows, it sounds as if I installed a complete stereo system with amps and subs in my trunk, Yeah It sounds that good! buy one for yourself and hear it for yourself.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have spent the last month and half installing and testing radios. First I tried the App Radio 2, one issue and problem after another. It is really cool on what it can do, but it lacks doing it consistently. Next I tried the JVC KW-NT300 navigation radio. Almost worked out, but still has issues with it...which I think was more my 2011 VW Golf TDI than the radio but no one could figure it out. Finally, I ordered this radio. Out of the box, it just worked. All the feature worked. It was completely straight forward on how to use it. Yeah, I got a manual never needed it. Installation was the easiest of the 3 radios. The radio sounds awesome with my Dynaudio stock speakers. JVC knows how to make car stereos sound great. The feature are very easy to use. I love have Pandora and Tunein working directly with my iphone 4s. MotionX almost makes me happy I save the money by not having a KW-NW300 navigation unit. Sure it costs you an additional $25 to use it directly on the screen, but it does everything a regular navigation does. I like the idea that the firmware is easily updated (remember to install the bluetooth update, makes your bluetooth phone connect much faster). If you are having trouble deciding which radio to put in your car, look no longer. This is it.

Pros: Easy to use, Easy to setup, easy to install. Tons of features, sounds great with stock speakers.

Cons: Wish it had my Apps that would work directly with it. That isn't a CON but it was the only thing I can think of.

Not Buying This Unit Would Be a Mistake

Nick from Roanoke, VA on 5/2/2012

This is an amazing unit. It'll make a dramatic improvement in any sound system. Installed in a '08 Ford Fusion SEL w/ Audiophile system, and the difference is unbelievable! Highs and mids are much louder and clearer (I can actually hear and enjoy the factory tweeters now), and removing the factory Ford head unit (and the garbage built-in EQ that cuts the bass response as the volume is increased) made the factory subs/amp in the rear deck RUMBLE! Now I can actually hear (and FEEL) the low-end in my music. Audio adjustments are a breeze once you familiarize yourself with the parametric EQ... you can really tweak your sound to bring out the subtle nuances in your music. The Bluetooth audio streaming works flawlessly, as does the call quality and functionality. DVDs look great on the big display (much better than the Pioneer unit you're thinking about buying), SIRIUS/XM works great....I even got Pandora to work with my Android phone! Stop thinking about it and buy this already. You won't be disappointed.

Pros: - Excellent sound quality (great S/N ratio, LOTS of clean power, great parametric EQ) - Awesome feature set - More customization options than other units/brands - built like a tank - removable face plate

Cons: - does not support replay option for SIRIUS/XM - menus can be a bit overwhelming AT FIRST - no HD Radio option

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I ordered this head unit as soon as it became available and I am happy I did. I installed this into my 370z and it looks amazing. The Bluetooth works great, even when streaming pandora. Also, I got the adapter to make this unit work with my steering wheel controls and it is flawless. I use a 32 gig jump drive for my music and videos and it works perfectly as well. I have not used the iPod cable due to crutchfield being sold out when I ordered the unit. But, I will provide a update once I get one. Once again, great job JVC.

    Audio Section

24 Bit D/A Converter: The JVC KW-AV70BT utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The KW-AV70BT is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the KW-AV70BT are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the KW-AV70BT are as follows:

    • CEA2006 Specs: 20 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (200 total watts)

Amplifier Gain Control: When you are using the KW-AV70BT with factory speakers (or those rated to less than 50 watts peak), the Amplifier Gain Control can limit the amount of power being sent to those speakers. When the Amp Gain Control is set to low, the volume control ranges from 0 (minimum) to 30 (maximum). When using speakers rated higher than 50 watts peak, you can set the Amp Gain Control to high, and the volume control will range from 0 to 50. The internal amp can also be turned off when all the speakers are powered by outboard amplifiers.

5ch/4V Preamp Outputs: The KW-AV70BT is equipped with 5ch/4.0V preamp outputs (Front, Rear, Subwoofer). The front and rear preamp outputs allow fader control, while the subwoofer preamp output is non-fading.

Subwoofer Control: You can adjust the KW-AV70BT's subwoofer level (-50 to +10) independently from the head unit's main volume control for added bass volume.

Built-in Crossovers: The JVC KW-AV70BT features a built-in high-pass filter for the unit's front & rear speakers, and a low-pass filter for the unit's subwoofer output.

    • High-Pass Filter: You can activate a variable high-pass filter (40, 60, 80, 100, 120, 150, 180, 220 Hz or Through) for the unit's front & rear channels (speaker- or preamp-level), so low frequency signals are cut off from your system's front & rear speakers. The front & rear channel's high-pass filters can be set independently of one another.
    • Low-Pass Filter: The unit's subwoofer preamp output features a low-pass filter. In order to prevent high-frequencies from being sent to your system's subwoofers, you can set the cutoff frequency of the low-pass filter to 50, 60, 80, 100, 120 Hz or Through.

Speaker Select: You can select which type & size of speaker you have connected to the head unit. Choose from Standard (OEM/Factory), Narrow (4"/5"), Middle (6"/5x7"/6x8"), Wide (6x9").

Pro EQ: The KW-AV70BT is equipped with JVC's Pro EQ. The integrated equalizer offers 8 preset sound modes (Flat, Natural, Dynamic, Vocal Boost, Bass Boost, Vibrant, and User) suitable for the music genre of your choice. The User mode allows you to manually adjust the head unit's 3-band parametric EQ (Frequency, Level, and Q-Factor).

    Frequency Level Q
    Bass 60, 80, 100, 150 Hz +/- 10 dB (-5 to +5) 1.0, 1.25, 1.5, 2.0
    Midrange 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 kHz +/- 10 dB (-5 to +5) 1.0, 2.0
    Treble 10.0, 12.5, 15.0, 17.5 kHz +/- 10 dB (-5 to +5) Fixed

Note: The audio adjustments are memorized for each source until you adjust the sound again.

Loud (Loudness): This feature boosts low and high frequencies to produce a well-balanced sound at a low volume level. You can set the Loudness to On or Off.

Dynamic Range Compression: This function reduces a Dolby Digital soundtrack's dynamic range so you can hear quieter dialog without being overwhelmed by loud sections. You can choose a setting of On (reduced dynamic range), Dialogue (clearer movie dialogue), or Off (full dynamic range).

Volume Adjust: The input level of each source (other than FM) is adjustable relative to the FM radio volume, so there isn't a significant volume difference when changing sources. Each source is individually adjustable from -15 to +6.

Key-Touch Tone: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

    AV Connections

Audio/Video Input: The rear-panel audio/video input consists of left and right RCA audio jacks and an RCA composite video jack, allowing you to connect external equipment to this head unit. The audio/video input can be set to one of the following modes:
