Bluetooth® included
Have you experienced Bluetooth lately? Hands-free calling is the tip of the iceberg. Now, you can pair up your iPhone, Android™ smartphone, or Blackberry™, and get some sweet functionality. For example, you'll be able to receive text message notification, stream music, or access Internet radio stations, depending on your phone's features. With the help of an app, Android owners can use swipes and gestures to control some receiver functions.

JVC also lets you pair two phones at once, so there's no need to choose between your personal and business phones. When a call comes in, the receiver will blink either blue or red, so you'll know at a glance if your call is coming from home or the office. To answer a call, just tap the volume knob.

Nice display
Big, bold, and beautiful, JVC's Separated Variable-Color Display lets you dial in the perfect color for your taste. You can choose from over 30,000 options, and you can even assign different colors to your controls and the display — decorate your dash in honor of your favorite team, with your school colors, or simply complement your existing lighting. If you're undecided, the receiver can cycle through all the colors continually for a really neat effect.

Great for iPod®, plus control Pandora®
Once you plug your iPod or iPhone® into the convenient front-panel USB input, you can use the KW-HDR81BT's oversized knob and buttons to navigate your music library. And with your iPhone connected, you can play your Pandora® Internet Radio stations from your dash, and even skip and rate songs like you do online.

Higher-power USB connection
JVC upped the power in their USB port, which lets you keep your smartphone charged, even when it's doing several tasks at once. And with your smartphone connected, you can listen to its internal memory as one source and access the little microSD card as another.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (see "Accessories") to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this JVC stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the JVC, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

This looks like a cool radio, with all the colors and options for colors and patterns. That's the best part about the radio, unfortunately. However . . . this is my 5th car radio install from Crutchfield, and all of them went great, except this one. My son helped with it, and he is really good with electronics, so I know I didn't mess anything up. Anyway, the install kit did not fit as well as others have, but ended up okay. The bad part is that the sound volume is barely hearable over road noise. When it is cranked all the way to 50, which is as far as it goes, it is barely usable. I like to listen to audio books while driving back and forth to work, and voices are barely intelligible at the highest volume. My son rechecked all the wiring, and it was as instructions said to be. He called Crutchfield tech help, which has always been excellent. He was told that it just must not be compatible with the car and that we should buy some kind of an audio booster. I found this unacceptable, since we made sure that the Crutchfield guide said it WAS a compatible model for my car, and I can't see spending more just to make the dang thing usable. Also, the difficulty of figuring out how to use even basic functions seems ridiculous. I miss just having buttons for every function, instead of floundering through menus that are difficult to follow. Also, the channel buttons for the radio stations are not responsive, and often require multiple pokes to change a channel.

Pros: Pretty Excellent bluetooth for phone

Cons: Lousy sound Difficult functions Unresponsive radio channel buttons

For this price, you're getting a lot of features. I bought it for the bluetooth, but I'm appreciating the ability to plug in the iPod as well. The two USB ports are handy - though one is used up by the bluetooth receiver. I read here that some people had difficulty with radio reception. Not me - it's way better than the GM factory unit. True it drops to silent for a second when it loses HD radio, but I think most HD radios do. Bluetooth takes a good 15 seconds after turning on the unit. That's not great. This model isn't beautiful, but it's less ugly that anything else at this price. The color controls are awesome. Of course, once you set it to match your dash, you probably won't be messing with it much. The tone controls are pretty deeply embedded in menus. I find myself holding on to the included remote, which is about the size of a remote entry key fob. I don't have steering wheel controls, so this lets me control volume, source, muting, radio presets, and a number of preset EQ settings. Very handy in my truck, as the dash is well out of reach when i'm in driving position. Bluetooth is solid, and with the included microphone, sounds good to the people I speak to. Best deal of all is buying from Crutchfield. It's a little bit more $ for the head, but the savings on the adapter and harness make up for it. And when you need to ask a question, they are there.

Pros: Delivers plenty of features, good radio reception, great value

Cons: not so easy navigation, annoying reception indicator that won't go away.

i really miss the clock on the dash display- the sound clarity is good- i hooked it upto a four channel Rockford Fosgate 400W amp and a Rockford Fosgate 300W 12" powered sub as well as (4) 6"x8" Rockford Fosgate 3-way speakers all around... sound is awesome- just a lil disappointed in the display options- but overall, sounds great

Pros: system sound IS Clean and Clear-

Cons: bit of a delay in the bluetooth connection to iPhone; microphone seems to be weak, having to yell in the car during calls- not exactly 'ideal'- wish there was a clock display during CD or Blutooth play-

I bought this head unit in July of 2015. At first, I was excited to put this in my 2010 VW Jetta because my factory unit died. I couldn't wait; according to Crutchfield this had it all: Bluetooth/Hands free calling, HD Radio, and it was SiriusXM ready. However after I had it installed, I found the FM reception was Terrible and the AM reception did not work at all. After the headache of swapping out the original head unit for a new one, the FM reception was still very poor. I then went to my local big box store, and found that Crutchfield sent me the wrong kit and antenna adaptor. Thankfully, the local store was able to get me the correct adaptor, and fixed it. Then, I did some research and found out that this radio was only "SAT Radio Ready", which is different than SiriusXM ready. Long story short they don't make the antenna adaptor for this anymore, so the sat radio will never work. Then, I go home (Chicago) where there are many, many powerful HD Radio stations. Of course, the reception is still poor (compared to my old factory model, VW Premium 8 Radio) and the signal would keep constantly switching between analog and HD. The HD radio only worked well when I was about 20 miles from the loop. Later, I found out that this radio has a fm sensitivity rating of 11.3 dBf (which is Terrible). I am going to replace this with the Kenwood DDX672BH eventually because this radio has a much better fm sensitivity rating (7.2!), and also has actual Working SiriusXM radio, and all the other good stuff.

Pros: Bluetooth audio/calling, different color options, ipod-front feature (usb), looks cool at night with the changing colors

Cons: NO Sirius radio as advertised, Terrible FM RECEPTION/HD RADIO, text sometimes hard to read during day, cheap feeling buttons/plastic, no RDS (text) on analog stations

Bluetooth works well for streaming and phone. Easier to figure out and use than the original Toyota unit for sure. Very pleased

Pros: Works as it should sound quality is very good integrated well with existing Toyota amp and a speakers of JBL system. Easy to use. Looks good too.

Cons: Operating the menu takes a little getting used to.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got this stereo to get HD radio & Bluetooth in my truck (2009 Tacoma) & have used it for a year or 2 now. Reception quality isn't great. I loose radio stations where I use to get them & my wife gets them just fine in her 2007 Ford Escape with the stock stereo. It's not hideous reception, but definitely worse than average. Bluetooth is evil. It connects to the phone fine, & stays connected while you dial. However as soon as the person answers, it drops the Bluetooth connection. It does this 30% of the time at least & has done it with at least 3 different Android phones. It's a good radio outside the reception & Bluetooth connectivity issues. I prefer real buttons over a touch screen & hoped this would be the top of the line one I could get without getting an expensive touch screen. It's not bad enough for me to replace, but disappointing.

Pros: HD radio, cheap, buttons instead of touch screen

    Cons: Flaky Bluetooth, poor reception

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed one year ago in a 2009 Boxster (987-2, non-Bose). The fit guide says it won't match but that's only because there's no mass-marketed conversion kit available. It will fit (tightly) using a conversion kit that is specially made by a small vendor and sourced directly from them. The kit is pricey but worth it; looks entirely stock with the dash, although it does require running a new can-bus wire to plug intothe fuse panel (all info easily searchable on online P-car forums). Been using the deck for a year and it's an excellent value. I chose it in part because it has push buttons; video display units in a convertible are tough to see in bright sun. Sound quality is way better than the stock PCM unit (non-Bose). Difference was noticeable instantly on the first drive with the top down, even without installing an amp. HD radio works great (SF Bay Area) and sounds great. iPhone/iPod functionality through USB with head unit control is good, however, scrolling while driving is not advisable. It's as distracting as texting, so let the passenger do it or advance one song at a time without looking. Only complaint is the bluetooth function, which I use the most; works fine with iPhone 5 and 6 but doesn't have an auto-connection by memory, so you have to manually link up a device each time you re-start the unit. Not a major issue but it is a minor hassle if you do a lot of short city driving from place to place. All in all, a great unit, still happy with it after one year.

Pros: sound quality over stock; HD radio is great; pushbutton radio presets allow no-look manipulation

Cons: manual bluetooth connection needed each time

    2003 Chevrolet Suburban
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this unit based primarily on it's inclusion of HD Radio, the double Din size, and previous JVC ownership. I installed it in my 2003 Suburban and it fits without any dash modifications. It does what you would expect from a functional standpoint; I have no beef with the sound quality. Most aftermarket units these days will have sufficient sound and in my opinion it's not wise to pick a Head Unit based on somebody's lavish praise for it's SQ. With few exceptions, they're all equally good. First, the illumination versatility is tremendous, and perhaps too complicated. Colors can be set from a wide palette, both night and day, both auto and manual. The display and button zones can be set independently, as well as menu mode. This is nice for matching your interior lighting scheme, and for me, making sure it's as dim as possible at night is paramount. Quickly I'll get to my biggest peeve. While streaming via Bluetooth, playback Cannot be paused, only muted. This is disastrous! If you are listening to a podcast and need to pause it while swinging through Starbucks, you must do so on the device. I have an iPhone 6 and I don't know if Android functions similarly. I like the "Big Button Mute", and it does what it should for radio reception. But for recorded sources that can be paused, it should be incumbent on engineering to force a pause for such sources. I don't want to just mute the audio and miss several minutes of my podcast. JVC, Please fix this!!

Pros: Sound Quality Illumination Versatility "Big Button Mute" Value

Cons: NO pause via Bluetooth NO rear panel AUX inputs Complicated illumination controls Bluetooth takes too long to connect

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Stereo has nice sound and I like that you can set the colors to match your dashboard. The Bluetooth audio works great but the microphone that it comes with doesn't seem to be much - the other end of a phone call will complain about the sound quality. I like the HD Radio feature, although this is the first time I've had that and it seems to take a bit of time for the HD to kick in, which is annoying. It also cuts out unless the signal is strong - not sure if the radio is to blame there or the technology. The menu system is complicated but with the manual you can figure things out. It is difficult to set presets above 1-6, not easy to determine how to do so unless you go carefully through the manual.

Pros: Sound is good, Bluetooth audio works well, nice option to change colors of the screen and buttons, HD radio sounds awesome.

Cons: Delay in HD radio reception, spotty as you get further away from stations. Bluetooth microphone seems a bit low budget for sound based on feedback of people I've talked to on the phone. Complicated menu system.

Everything else works - but bluetooth

HeavyThumper from Las Vegas, NV on 10/21/2015

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For HD radio, for overall sound quality, for ease of use, for display adjustment to match your interior - awesome. Bluetooth - sucks. To clarify - the unit connects consistently and reliably to any bluetooth device and plays music wonderfully. But as for conversations...the head unit does not have any kind of echo cancellation filter. To put it more simply - it doesn't shut off the external microphone while the remote caller is talking. So you hear them perfectly in your vehicle - while they hear themselves in a horrible echo. The only barely usable option is to use your phone's built-in mute capabilities - manually switching the mic on/off. Using a third-party mic improved (slightly) how remote callers perceived my speech - but doesn't address the echo problem. Mic position doesn't help either. Using extremely low volume is a possibility - but then you can't hear them. So...for music it's an awesome unit. For speakerphone use don't even try - look elsewhere. I've heard from multiple sources that this is a JVC issue - so try other brands. The fact that this model has the "KW" prefix gives me reservations about trying Kenwood as well. I should mention I've had this problem since the day I installed the unit. Like an idiot, I lived with it instead of arranging for an exchange so I'm out of warranty. When I moved the unit to another vehicle I had the same problem - so it's absolutely the JVC unit. Hopefully I'll do better next time...not JVC or Kenwood.

Pros: Excellent sound quality, usability, flexibility.

    Cons: Unusable bluetooth speakerphone.

    2004 Ford Explorer
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this from Crutchfield in April of 2014 to upgrade the factory head unit on my 2004 Ford Explorer. I wanted to have Bluetooth streaming audio for listening to podcasts from my Android phone and to give HD radio a try. The JVC KW-HDR81BT had both of these features and nothing else I didn't want at an attractive price. Plus the reviews were pretty good. One of the main reasons I bought this is for the Bluetooth connectivity, and in this respect this unit is an absolute failure. I am in and out of many test vehicles for my job and the Bluetooth on this unit is worse than any factory head unit I've dealt with. It's even worse than the cheap little cigarette lighter Bluetooth to AUX-in adapter I carry to use in test cars that don't have Bluetooth. It's the single worst Bluetooth device I have ever used. Why? First, it takes forever to reconnect to your phone on start up. Sometimes it never reconnects at all. The transport controls rarely work. You end up pulling your phone out to hit play and guess what? This often causes the Bluetooth driver to reboot and you have to wait all over again. I find myself giving up and doing half my commute in silence. Apart from the Bluetooth, the UI for the clock is maddening. You can make the clock show up, but only by scrolling through a bunch of options by hitting the display button. It will not remember the setting, so every time you change sources you have to fiddle with the display button to get the clock back. It's dangerous.

Pros: -The sound quality is pretty good even with the stock speakers in the Explorer. -HD radio is a nice improvement; the claim is CD quality in the FM band and FM quality in the AM band. I believe it. Particularly when an AM station locks in to HD reception the sudden improvement in quality is startling. -reasonable price.

Cons: -terrible Bluetooth functionality. -bad UI choices. I suspect this was designed and coded by someone who never drives a car. -no persistent clock, if you have to be somewhere on time this will drive you crazy. -the upper right hand corner is taken up by this goofy square cross hairs like graphic. Normally I wouldn't care but this would be a great place for a clock. If you think you would be bothered by any of the items I have described, save the frustration; avoid this unit.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this radio two and a half years ago. At first, it was great -- a drastic improvement over the craptastic stock radio. But then, within a few months, I started having trouble with the Bluetooth. It would randomly drop connection, refuse to connect, and just generally act terribly. Music would sometimes be staticy, other times, would only connect for 20-50 seconds before dropping the connection again. I pulled my dash apart and ran a USB cable to move the bluetooth receiver into the shift well, to bring it closer to where I normally keep the phone. There was some improvement, but still a lot of trouble. The failure to connect is almost every time. There's about a 60% chance that I'll have to turn the head unit off and back on in order to get the bluetooth to connect. It's gotten to the point where I don't even bother waiting to see if it will -- as soon as I start the car I turn the head unit off and back on. Recently, the front speakers have stopped working. It was the right speaker first, about a year after I bought the radio -- it would work for a bit, then cut out, then suddenly click back on randomly. It did this for a few months before it stopped working entirely, then the front left speaker went the same way. I now only have rear speakers except occasionally one of the front speakers will cut on randomly. I've checked the wiring and speakers -- they're all intact. Poor quality that died too soon. Don't recommend.

Pros: When the bluetooth works, it's good quality Great sound from the rear speakers Looks good

Cons: Bluetooth is complete garbage. Front speakers don't produce any sound Automatic dimmer doesn't work

    Drastic Improvement!

Great head unit! It is really amazing how much more crisp and full the sound is, even with stock speakers. HD radio is fantastic as well. Very easy install for the ISO mounting on an 05 Outback. The menu system is easy to navigate and it's great how you can really tune the color to match the display colors to match your vehicle. Definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a double DIN head unit.

Pros: It's just easier to say everything, rather than list it all.

Cons: None, other than the small scuff on it from dropping it on the garage floor. Whoops!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking to update my old factory radio for connectivity reasons. Install was pretty easy in my corolla (only needed to get a longer socket extension to reach screws). The stereo it self works well. Controls are easier once you use it a couple times, but no major hurtles. Love receiving HD channels on the tuner as there are quite a lot in my area (LA). Works well with my Samsung S5. Pretty happy with the whole experience and of course Crutchfield was excellent as usual. Now to do my husbands truck.

Fairly easy self install with help from You Tube and Crutchfield. The sound is very good, much improved over factory replaced unit. 2 early noticeable drawbacks: 1) in any kind of daylight it is very hard to see the display 2) my smartphone has connecting issues with the unit's Bluetooth Overall I'm quite happy with the purchase.

Cons: washed out display in daylight irregular Bluetooth smartphone connection

The LCD display is of poor quality and is hard to see off-angle and in bright ambient light. Control of Bluetooth devices is clunky and slow. The power / source button has a transparent background with black legend, whereas all the other buttons have black background with transparent legend. Being different, the power / source button looks goofy and out of place during the day, but it's even worse at night. Having a large transparent backlit area, the power / source button appears much brighter than the backlit legends on all the other buttons. It is so bright that it is distracting and annoying when driving at night.

Now that I've had this unit in my vehicle for a couple weeks I just got to say that this thing beats my oem unit in my 2011 Xterra hands down! For the price, this thing has amazing sound! It may not have a touchscreen and isn't as easy to use as others but I love it. Also, I never thought I'd install it myself but I was done in about two hours which isn't bad considering the instructions weren't too great. Overall, I'm happy with my purchase from Crutchfield.

features on the radio are not as easy to use. for example, you cant push the phone icon to disengage a call from the radio blue tooth. You have to actually go into the Bluetooth menu to do this. Who want this danger while driving. At first i opted for a touch screen but it was out of my price range. But after buying this radio, there was a sale for $140 off a touch screen radio, putting it in range of my budget. so unfair.

Pros: The volume is loud, might have to change or add woofer to compensate.

Cons: now that i have used it. the price is not worth it.

By far one of the best car stereo's I have purchased. The instructions were awesome. Some items are not explained well in the JVC instructions so there are some things I need to research. I may need to get a subwoffer. I find that HD radio seems to have trimmed bass then a CD or blue tooth music from my iphone. I may need to preposition the booth tooth dongle as I have dropped the connection a couple times. I soldered all the connections to the wiring harness the night before and it made the installation very easy.

Pros: Display, Sound Quality, Ease of install, bluetooth phone connection

Cons: eq settings difficult to adjust while driving you need to navigate through the menu's, Bluetooth phone connection icons not explained in the documentation, Not many Cons. Nice unit.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this radio to of course to replace my stock GM unit that ate CD's. Sorry but the instructions don't tell you much but if you have any mechanical abilities you'll understand what needs to happen so the adapter plates can attach and the wiring is correctly connected. I didn't have to modify my dash in any way but when placing the new radio in, you'll have to carefully move the wiring around so it will fit just right. I soldered and shrink tube'd the wires together for the best connection and lower profile. All wires are color coded so easy to match up. Take your time and read through everything so you dont miss anything. I spliced into a ground wire (made sure it was ground with the multimeter) to assure the radio black wire was connected to ground. Don't force anything and of course plug it in and test it out prior to mounting. Not into "coolness" I just wanted a unit that did it all but easy to use so hence the neutral rating. Overall great head unit by the way.

Pros: Blutooth plugs front and back (the back is for the BT dongle that connects to your smartphone. Aux jack in front as well. Connects to your smart phone easily. Controls are easy to figure out after a couple of read-thru's of the manual. The sound is amazing after you dial it in a little. And yes, you can see the info in the daytime! Look at that- a CD player that works even though I probably wont need it with bluetooth-ing my phone music in. HD radio sounds awesome as well.

Cons: The installation instructions were little to none. I guess too many combinations of vehicle to radio to be more detailed.

This receiver has great sound quality, improved the sound of the OEM speakers in my '01 Tacoma 100% - and they are not great speakers. The double DIN size makes for easy reading of the controls. Easy installation with the master sheet and JVC wire identification sheet. Looks great too. EVERYTHING is customizable, from the day/night intensity and color to the sound; simple standard EQ settings allow you to choose your rollover point and Q factor! Bluetooth works great with my old flip phone and yes it has streaming capability. Has 2 USB ports. One on the front face and one on an extension cable from the rear. Have flash drive plugged into front outlet and the bluetooth dongle plugged into the cable which lays discreetly behind the center console for good reception. Also you do receive a nice hard copy book that will fit tin the glove box.

    Pros: See review.

Cons: The source/power button light is TOO BRIGHT. Other reviews noted this as well. Have the night "Button" brightness at lowest setting. The night display brightness is independent so that can be set for good readability. The menus are complex - this is not really a "con" just a fact of the "customizability". Downloaded the manual and printed it. keep the appropriate pages on a clip board so I can mark down the settings.

Pros: HD Radio built in, Bluetooth adapter included and good quality sound for the price.

Cons: There is a bit of a learning curve as far as getting used to what to press etc. to get it to do what you want but very nice. So, this isn't the flashiest of the double-din head units out there. But it does everything and is easy to use. Bluetooth hands-free, streaming, iPhone on front w/high power charger and Pandora, HD Radio built in. You can't go wrong. The real reason I bought it was that my daughter got a used Ford Explorer SportTrac that had an older touch-screen aftermarket stereo with a built-in DVD player. In its day it was all fancy, but it was now pretty outdated (no Pandora, Bluetooth, etc.). Most importantly, it made the truck deadly! You could Not control it without looking at it closely. You had to make three taps on a resistive-touch screen (the old kind that you have to push hard) to even change the channel, and the UI was just awful. When I first drove the truck, I was afraid to change station because I thought I'd get in a wreck! This JVC is really easy to use by touch - 6 big station buttons, big "next/prev" and "up/down" buttons, a big ol' knob right in the middle that acts to pause music/mute radio. It's great! We kept the speakers that were in the car and the pre-amp sub output worked great (the unit even lets you choose the band-pass filter). Overall we're very happy with it (and the install goodies were perfect as usual). I bought this for my

I just needed a tuner that can get the job done, is not too flashy, and not be too complicated. This fits the bill. I have to admit, there was a LOT of careful trimming done to make this fit my '02 E150, but well worth the effort. I am a more form and function instead of flashy kind of guy and this unit looks nice without drawing too much attention to it. Its display is color-changing (so you can get a close to factory look of the lighting). It is pretty simple to use once everything is set up. Not too bad for an "inexpensive" selection.

    2012 Toyota Matrix
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am replacing the stock radio/CD player in a 2012 Toyota Matrix S with 4 factory speakers. This 2012 car is a generation 2 Matrix. The main reason I bought this is for the Bluetooth hands free calling with an iphone 5 to comply with the cell phone laws while driving here in Hawaii. My Matrix has built in volume and radio station/CD track buttons on the steering wheel. I thought the installation instructions could be more detailed. I didn't have problems soldering the Metra wiring harness to the JVC wiring harness but I'm not sure if this would be difficult for a first timer. It was not clear how to remove the stock Matrix console face plate. I recommend prying the bottom off first then slowly work up both sides then swivel the console plate 90 degrees so it is parallel to the ground. Then pull it off. I think if you try to pry the console off from the top first, the plastic retaining clips will break. Do not use a screwdriver to pry the plate off even though it is very tight. Use your fingernails. When mounting the radio, you must remove the black trim plate on the JVC unit by removing the 2 small screws. These two screw tabs on the radio must be bent flush with the top of the JVC unit or the console plate will not lay flush. The instructions are not clear on how to attach the plastic stereo mounts. Use trial and error. I had to slightly file the left plastic mount to get the stereo into the dash hole.

Pros: Low cost head unit. Menus easy to figure out. Real volume knob is nice. I'm returning this and purchasing a different radio from Crutchfield under. Crutchfield's support has been consistently excellent. I have called them 4 times regarding problems during the install and then to upgrade the unit. It only cost $10 flat rate to send the unit back from Hawaii. They emailed a UPS return label. Every phone call I made was answered by someone from the U.S. which is unusual these days!

Cons: In the Matrix, the radio is mounted near the top of the dash (closer to the sun) & the display is too dim. At night, the display is OK. I can't read the Caller ID name/number or CD tracks during the day. FM radio sensitivity not as good as factory radio. Some stations don't come in clearly. This radio has less sensitivity than others at Crutchfield. There is a long delay when pressing the phone call button to start/end a Bluetooth call. When switching between inputs, there is a delay too.

Great mid range deck - the only issues are with menu functionality with the sound quality presets. The equalizer presets are less than acceptable and you have to fiddle with the bass, mid, treble levels and frequencies quite a bit all while navigating back through the menu every time you change one. These are pretty small critique items however as an avid mobile electronics guy, sound customization took way too long and the endless menu cycling was annoying to me. I never hesitate to order from Crutchfield given their great customer service, extensive device information and parts they include with your purchase. Just hooked this up in my son's Matrix. I wanted a double din with blue tooth and HD radio. This fit the bill. Hook up was easy, but the dash kit did not provide a good fit, so I needed to modify. I've mostly owned Alpine (also a few pioneers, a sony, and a kenwood over the years), so comparing it to an Alpine probably isn't completely fair, but I'm doing it anyway.... This has a great feature set for the money and the many available colors for the display adds to the cool factor for the younger crowd. But after quite a bit of tweaking, it sounds pretty good. I did upgrade his speakers, but no amp, and the results are a nice upgrade from the stock system. But at the end of the day, if Alpine or Pioneer had a head unit with the features I wanted at a price I was looking to spend, that's where I would go, but for the money, this is a nice unit.

The sound quality is very good. The display doesn't light up brightly enough during the day and settings don't change that. The display is not readable on a sunny day. The instructions on how to operate it end abruptly without telling how to save FM stations beyond position 6. It has a typical menu pattern for settings which generally works well - however the scroll settings are meaningless and do nothing at all. This is my second one - the first one had a defective CD sensor and had to be replaced immediately as it did not function in any capacity, not being able to boot up. Again - the sound quality is very good, happy with that. Also, have not been able to get it to play music from my phone. No great instructions about that either. :(

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I really like this receiver; it was the only one I found in this price range with HD radio; Bluetooth; USB connector on face; and good DA converters. I put it into a 2001 Pathfinder to replace the stock "Bose" head end. It turns out the factory receiver was actually a Clarion, and that accounts for the poor sound quality I was experiencing. The new JVC was used in conjunction with the Scoshe interface adapter - I kept the stock Bose amp(s) and speakers already installed. As I expected, the whole system sounds 100% better with a quality head end. Bottom end is suprisingly acceptable and tight. I have no trouble reading the display during the day - others have complained about this - there are a myriad of settings for display color and brightness - I simply selected a high-contrast option for the display that works fine with high ambient light levels. Bluetooth setup with my Nexus 5 phone was unbelievably simple and painless - I mounted the mic on the steering wheel column and it's proven to be a good location. NR and echo cancellation settings are effective. I believe this is a really good value considering all the features and sound quality. However, beware of using this with the ASWC-1 steering wheel interface. I ended up using totally different functions to make the receiver work as expected. I finally got the interface to work perfectly, but there was a lot of head scratching and frustration during the process. Almost certainly not JVC's fault . . . .

Pros: Excellent features for the price Very good sound quality Good build quality

Cons: Beware of quirks with ASWC-1 steering control interface - it will work well, but you'll have to do some unconventional programming procedures.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this JVC to upgrade the factory stereo in my wife's' 2006 Highlander. Thanks to the MasterSheet, installation was pretty straightforward. The install looks really good with the Metra kit. The first thing I noticed was the power and improved sound quality with the factory speakers. I installed the hands-free bluetooth phone mic on the steering column and I've had no problems. I mainly listen to music streaming from my phone, so I'm glad to have the Bluetooth audio.

Pros: Sound quality; customize EQ settings; big display

Cons: Can't search radio stations by type

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The JVC KW-HDR81BT is an awesome upgrade from the stock unit. I purchased this unit as a replacement for my 6-disc stock in my 2006 Ford Mustang GT with a Shaker 500. The main reason for my want to change is that my stock did not have an AUX or USB input also the sounds was bland and I wanted to get the most out of my Android phone and MP3 player. The ease of the install was helped by the Crutchfield support team...I had the new one installed in less than 2 ½ hoursSome great features are Very easy to operate. You can easily mute at any time by pushing the large knob in. It has a USB cable attached to the back which you can pull through to one of the compartments on your console to hide whatever you plug into it. Bluetooth works perfectly, you can even scroll through your phones phonebook through the radio. It won't display your text messages on the radio, but it will display that you received a text message. Multicolor display is nice, you literally can choose any color or match your dash lighting. Also the screen does not wash out from sunlight like my stock unit. This HD radio will display the songs on HD only. If you tune into an analog station it will not display the RDS song text but you can tag the station and you can tell the difference when you listen to an HD station. The best part is I wanted a Stereo that had a little retro look going into the Mustang but had great features and great sound and this unit made all that happen.

Pros: Large Screen, easy to read. Lots of setting and pre settings for equalizer. Bluetooth and Android compatible. Sound great after you adjust the equalizer. Best bang for the buck. Has a retro look. 2 USB ports. You also have all the support from Crutchfield to make it easy to install.. I also was supplied for free a wiring harness and mounting kit and Axxess AFDI-5V that is needed for attaching to the bass speaker and keeping it from popping when you start the unit.

Cons: None for me it was a perfect unit and fit for my Mustang GT.

No complaints really. Installed in a 2011 Corolla. Directions were pretty straight forward with the MasterSheet. Bluetooth worked first time, no issues at all...phone calls and audio, not sure where I am going to put the mic yet. HD radio sounds great. Some settings are buried, but they are all there and I don't change them up for each song so its no big deal. Sound is 1000% better than stock head unit. I dropped in some new polk 6x9's to replace the back speakers and they sound great. Going to replace the fronts next and will add an amp if needed. Impressed with everything given the price!

I actually returned this stereo due to the fact that the lettering being way too big. You could either see some of what was playing or the time. It's a nitpick, I know. Menu is easy after about 3 mins of messing with it. I don't like the fact that a USB is taken up because the Bluetooth isn't builtin. Kind of odd. I ended up buying the same unit that is more expensive and has more lines in the display.

Pros: Good stereo, pushes speakers well.

Cons: Lettering too big and a USB has to be taken up in order to use the Bluetooth.

    Good, but could be better

Anonymous from Austin, TX on 1/19/2015

I bought this for my 2009 Honda Fit which does not have Bluetooth built in. Austin is instituting a hands free law, so I needed a new unit with Bluetooth. My car allowed me to go double din and the adapter kit from Crutchfield that was included with the purchase was perfect. As for the unit itself, this is one of the cheaper double dins with Bluetooth, so expectations should be aligned as such. It is fairly easy to use and the HD radio sounds pretty good, if a little tinny (I'll have to play with the equalizer settings some more). The Bluetooth works great in that it's easy to pair and sound quality is pretty good. I recommend using your phone's voice prompts over the unit's voice feature, since it can actually take more steps. The plethora of colors are fun to play around with but the text display could be brighter. Overall, it seems to be a solid piece of equipment, but certainly not top of the line.

Pros: Decent value Good sound Bluetooth works easily Microphone works well HD radio Multiple display options

Cons: Sound quality could be better Display not bright enough Phone voice prompt a little cumbersome

A great head unit for a great price. Sounds good and has all the pre-amps and usb hook ups you'll need, but. . .

Pros: Like I said, I basically chose this unit for the pre-amps and the usb ports. It's got kick-ass sound and an easy phone interface. Great if you want to run subs; hi-and low-pass filters are built right in. Oh, and HD radio blows satellite away, IMO.

Cons: Small con- display needs to be brighter HUGE con- menu system was obviously designed by a chimpanzee. Options used everyday- like EQ and Audio options- are buried, while things like Demo Mode and Set Clock come right up. Who thinks of these things? Eyes on the road, folks!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installation was easy with all the free included gear and the Axxess ASWC-1 Steering Wheel Control Adapter. Called CF on Saturday with two questions regarding two splices to ground and they had answers for me in minutes. Since I don't solder often and am very particular with setup of solder joints, I spent few hours indoors completing all the soldering between various plugs. Then spent a few hours in the driveway with the car completing the install. Dash removal and access was much easier than I thought. Also have a drill press and added a hole to the Scosche HA1700B dash kit through which the MIC protrudes. MIC is mounted to the back. Install concern is that the screws used to mount the radio to the dash kit seem too large and caused the plastic to stress and start to crack. So I went to a smaller diameter self taping screw. I also drilled holes down to the lower storage bin (Odyssey w/o DVD) and fed the rear USB into it for easy access. Steering wheel controls work great. Pairing to an IPHONE 4S worked great and easy. Hands Free calling is extremely clear and folks can hear me well too. HD radio is great in AM and FM. Only wish the I/O button was always lit when the key is in the ignition (not just when the radio is turned on) so I can locate the on/off button in the dark. Lastly, there must be approx. 22 color selections (buttons can be set to different color than display)... Kids love the color wave mode that continuously cycles through the colors.

Pros: Easy Setup, Great Functionality, Large Display Characters that scrolls through information, Easy Pairing to Phone (can access recent phone calls with the radio's dial), Easy pairing to music, Excellent HD radio. Looks good in the dash.

Cons: On/Off button is only lit when radio is powered on making it hard to find in the dark. Where do I upload a picture of my installation???

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My favorite classical station, WCLV, migrated to the HD subchannel of a more power public radio station. A professional installer placed a "2 DIN" JVC receiver. The JVC worked and sounded fine. However, during daylight -not just full sunlight- the dial was unreadable. Crutchfield offered the KD-HDR81BT, a four din unit with a larger readout. (Crutchfield also had the best price). The professional installer changedout the JVC 2 din unit with the 4 din HDR81BT. The screen is readable, even in direct sunlight and often with my sunglasses on. The HDR81BT has an array of features, including Blue Tooth connections. The bluetooth phone feature works fine. A whole menu of features allows the refinement of the audio with equalizer settings. The usual fader and balance controls are very easy. A front panel usb input is easy to access. Not that important to me, though a very nice feature, is the panoply of selectable color schemes for thee readout and controls and make the unit very attractive at night. A big advantage of the 4 din unit over the 2 din unit is the addition of six preset buttons on the upper right panel that allow the storing of six most frequently listened to stations on both FM and AM. The 2 din JVC unit did not have room for the preset buttons which left me constantly searching through endless stations. Additional memory banks allow the saving of just about as many stations as one could desire. Tuner sensitivity is good.

Pros: Display is readable in full daylight (a feature not to be overlooked); Station preset buttons (like a traditional car radio). Bluetooth works well; Adjustable audio equalizer;-sounds great with my Rav4's standard speakers; European/ South American/USA tuning offsets -can come in handy when tuning some of the new low power FM stations; hands free cellular phone feature; usb and audio inputs; CD player included for music with more dynamic range than an MP3 can deliver; sensitive FM/AM tuner

Cons: While readable in daylight, the display could still be brighter. Display brightness and readability in dayling/sunlight needs to be addressed by the manufacturers of aftermarket car receivers.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First, I did not do my own installation so I cannot comment on how hard or easy it would have been. I simply did not have the desire to spend an afternoon doing auto yoga as I contorted and twisted myself in unnatural ways getting this JVC KW-HDR81BT receiver into my 2001 Acura. That aside, I like the sound of this receiver and it is a true upgrade from the factory unit in pretty much every way except one crucial area (stay tuned). Music sounds more vibrant, fuller, and crisper, so I am enjoying listening to CDs, Ipod, HD radio, and FM while commuting or going on the road. For under $200, this receiver has pretty much everything I wanted for an older car: Bluetooth, cd, HD radio, hands free calling with external mic, and more. The reception in the metro area is great, but it diminishes as one escapes the urban or suburban centers for prettier vistas. The remote is OK, but a bit too tiny and lacks an essential adjustment (stay tuned) that is nearly unforgivable. I tend to drop it, so thankfully it is just an accessory, not essential since I am sitting right by the receiver, not in the kitchen making popcorn. The bluetooth feature is quite nice and new to me, though phone calls sound a bit "leaner" than I expected (if that term makes sense here) though my older phone could be the culprit. I do wish JVC could have thrown in a USB cable but understand why they would not want to spring for a cheap cable just to make customers happy and save them the trouble of tracking down one.

Pros: Good value, fits perfectly, big upgrade in the overall sound, hands-free phone connection via blue tooth, able to stream music loaded on a tablet or phone.

Cons: The menus, navigation, and options are not clearly delineated or intuitive. The manual is OK, but not great. Trying to figure out how to keep an Ipod from repeating songs requires one to pull over and scan the manual the first couple of times. My biggest gripe is that changing something as simple as the bass, treble, and balance is absurdly difficult. It is not because I am older or not used to tech stuff. It is because whoever created the interface was more enamored with loading it with features.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a nice radio for the money. I think it has great sound, a lot better than my factory Ridgeline radio. It has all the options I was looking for: HD, USB, Bluetooth, several CD formats, and auxiliary. The little remote is actually pretty nice. The Bluetooth phone feature sounds really good, better than several factory Bluetooth phones I've talked on. The equalizer is pretty good and has some built-in presets. I wanted an HD and I'm glad I got it, but honestly I think if a lower cost radio had everything that this one had except for the HD, I'd be just as happy. I still think it's a great radio and a good price for HD. I certainly would not pay more for an HD though!!

Pros: Nice HD double din, Bluetooth is clear, good microphone. Good menu for Pandora and phone. Great sound.

Cons: Installation - had to remove all the housings and face plate from the radio to install with the free dash kit. The free dash kit works but it's cheap and can get a little aggravating. It doesn't look cheap once it's in though. There is no manual dimmer for this radio and not all cars can use the built in dimmer. Bluetooth works with my iPhone 5 but I'm not sure about the new 6; check the JVC website for that info.

I installed this in my fiancee's 2001 Toyota Celica. The Bluetooth streaming works flawlessly every time, which was huge for me. You don't have to re-pair your phone every time, and even more importantly, you don't even need to touch your phone at all - you can just hit "play" from the head unit to resume from where you last left off [tested with an iPhone 5S]. Install was straightforward, pretty much the same as any head unit install. Lots and lots of color customization options allowed me to match the color with the car's existing displays. I drive a 2008 BMW m3 and a 2007 Aston Martin Vantage... and I am jealous of my fiancee's 2001 Toyota Celica because of this head unit.

Pros: - Flawless BT streaming and good interface - Color customization - HD radio - Great value

Cons: - Double DIN form factor is "near" perfect with this car, though that's probably more of a comment on the car than the HU. - I can't install one in my own cars :-(

    Great bang for buck

BD from Chandler AZ on 9/29/2014

I got the JVC that looks like this but w/o bluetooth, sounds great, especially with all new speakers installed as well. I had this installed by a friend , Kevin at Mobile Audio in Mesa AZ, who does alarms and stereo installs because he knows how to install harness adapters with his eyes closed. This unit sounds great with Clarions new line of component speakers which I had already installed in my Tahoe. I think the offset rotary knob is better on this unit rather JVCs new style with the knob in the center, plus this units face looks better in an SUV or nicer car.

Pros: The pros is a good digital sound at this price point, customize the look with multiple colors on the display and easy to use aux USB inputs and playback of CDs and sound curves.

Cons: Cons is the menu interface and color changing is a pain to figure out, and the remote control is a bit basic. All in all this is a great unit though.

I am extremely happy with this head unit and the Crutchfield team. This was my first radio install and the instructions and tech support were very good. The Crutchfield advisors were very helpful in guiding me to the best selection for my 2003 Honda Element. During install I had two questions and I received immediate help on the tech support line - no waiting which was comforting. I completed the entire install in a few unrushed hours on a Saturday afternoon. I love the radio itself. The factor that swung me to this unit over other contenders was the HD capability which is superb. The Bluetooth streaming works well for music and phone use which was a very welcome upgrade which was lacking in my factory unit. The setup for radio stations and some settings is a bit complex however the manual is good and will just take some time to play with it to get the configuration the way I want. Overall the sound quality is great - I can't believe how much better my factory speakers sound...my wife even noticed without me asking. Very pleased overall and highly recommended.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have a 2005 GMC Sierra Crew Cab w/o the Bose system. It far exceeded my expectations for the cost. I never realized what an overpriced low quality unit the factory radio was until I replaced it with this unit. I didn't lose any low end and I gained a lot of good upper-mid to high end. The Parametric EQ helps a lot in this regard especially with stock factory speakers. I record, mix, and master a lot and I don't have to waste CD's anymore to check mixes . It plays 16bit wav and a 320kbps/48kHz mp3 files with no problem. I use a USB2.0 Multi Card Reader with SD and SDHC memory cards plus thumb drives. It plays them all with no problems. I get AM radio stations that my factory radio couldn't. One in particular would fade out depending on where I would drive but that doesn't happen at all now. FM seems to be the same though. The Metra VT-GMRC-01 had a wire in the wrong spot in the connector. It dinged 5 times, the time on the radio displayed for 5 seconds then the screen went blank, and nothing would work after that. I could repeat the symptoms by unplugging the Metra unit and plugging it back in but not by turning the ignition key off and on. Tech Supp. talked me through fixing it and gave me the option of a new one. The fix was easy to do so I did it myself. There's a setting to adjust how loud the volume will go called 'VOL ADJUST' (not 'Loudness'). The default setting is too low if you're playing older CD's released before the loudness wars. So far I love this unit.

Pros: 1. Great sounding unit. 2. Very easy to install. 3. Short enough to where I didn't have to remove the factory mounting brackets.

Cons: 1. It says you have two USB ports but they don't tell you that the Bluetooth adapter goes in one of them if you want to use the Bluetooth function. 2. Remote is useless IMO. You have to hold it so close to the radio that you might as well just use the buttons on the radio. It's very distracting to use while driving. 3. Display is dimmer on left side. I think the 'Source' button shares the same backlight as the left side of the display but I'm not sure. It's more noticeable during the day.

Pros: Features, Bluetooth, iPod controls, HD. Install easy.

Cons: Menu is a biy hard to maneuver through on the go. Better pull over to make any adjustments.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed this in my son's Acura RL and now I want HD radio in all of our cars. There were no surprises, it was an easy installation. I haven't spent much time with it but with just a few minutes of testing it worked with an iPod classic on the USB port and with an iPhone 5s over bluetooth. Siri 'eyes free' may only be a marketing term, she did what I asked her to from the JVC. If I had to nit-pick this unit it would have a separate power antenna signal for just when the unit needs an antenna. As it stands it raises the antenna any time the unit is on which isn't necessary for CD, iPod or internet radio. Other units have separate power antenna and amplifier trigger signals. I also could not figure out how to disable the built-in power amp which can be done in some other units. It also isn't clear in the instructions how to create a mono subwoofer signal. The buttons feel on the cheap side and menu navigation is clumsy but none of this any worse than units from Kenwood or Pioneer. Using radio presets 7-18 is unintuitive. Best feature of all, no MIXTRAX!

Pros: Inexpensive unit with CD, HD radio, Bluetooth, USB, hands free iPhone 5s compatibility and excellent sound quality.

Cons: Cheap button feel, clumsy menus, unintuitive radio presets, no time correction, limited EQ bands

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Radio is close to being super awesome! I just installed this in a 2005 Ford F150 along with a steering wheel module and it was a perfect fit. The free mounting kit from Crutchfield works well but is very cheap looking. I went as far as calling Crutchfield to try to buy something better but they don't stock anything but that kit. As with all the radio manufacturers they seem to cower to iphone users. Thus, most of the custom radio features are iphone specific. I am an Android user so no luck for us, plus the JVC Android app is a complete waste of time. With such a weak effort why did they even bother with the App. Overall a great value since my 2 main goals were Bluetooth and HD radio. Does both really well with only one complaint on Bluetooth. When streaming Pandora you don't see any song information from the radio like you do listening to HD radio. Again, I bet iphone users don't have this issue. My other complaint is the cartoonish graphics relating to the tuning/antenna. What a total waste of real estate on the screen. I get it, it supposed to be some type of tuning graphic but wow.. Totally redundant and useless. There are already other small on-screen notifications for HD, ST, etc. when the stations are tuned, again makes no sense. I wish there was the ability to turn it completely off. Or better yet, how about display the constant time (something actually useful). The only other way to display time is to toggle off station/song info, why JVC why?

Pros: Super duper awesome value (seriously what can you get for under $200 now) Bluetooth streaming - music & phone calls works well HD radio works super awesomely great Custom colors can match anything is you car Sound quality is really really good with the F150 factory speakers and subwoofer

Cons: - The following me being nit-picky, it's an under $200 radio for sanity's sake - No love for Android (sad face), iphones probably work really well Useless cartoonish tuning graphics - Again, JVC don't you do product evaluations with real people? Bluetooth will not display Pandora song information streaming from Android, again iphone may work better Screen brightness can use some work, seems dark at times

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was a perfect replacement for my factory Bose receiver on my 2003 Nissan 350Z. I had the Bose system and was never pleased with the sound quality plus the fact it didn't have an aux. input or Bluetooth. I was a very easy install with their supplied harness and installation kit. Plus the installation instructions were specifically for my vehicle and not just generic There was a small faceplate already installed on the receiver i wasn't aware of. I thought I was going to have to file down the installation face plate for a good fit, but that wasn't necessary once I realized the pre installed faceplate just had to be popped off..The final fit is perfect with no gaps at all. I haven't replaced any of the factory speakers and I may not, it sounds 100% better just the way it is. The supplied wire harness was easy to hook up and it allowed me to use my existing factory amp. I was also able to match my factory dash light colors exactly. I am very pleased.

    Pros: Everything

Cons: I only wish the volume knob wasn't chrome.

So far so good. I just had it installed today(I'm getting to old for crawling around under a dashboard) in my 2004 Tacoma Dbl cab and wow what a difference in sound quality compared to the stock head unit from Toyota. Love the blue tooth I don't have to drive around with that bug hanging out of my ear anymore. I read the reviews that said the interface and setup had a learning curve. Not sure why this is. Press button, turn knob pretty simple. I may have to upgrade the speakers now to get the full benefit of this unit but the factory speakers sound really great right now so can't really justify the expense at this time. I'll update my review after I've spent more time with it, but for now I couldn't be more pleased with my purchase.

Pros: Sounds great, Looks incredible, Love that I can set the colors to my Seahawks green and blue

If your not electronic savvy you will have a time learning how to use the Menu to make your adjustments on the system. BT quality is better than my factory installed BT in my 13 Escape Titanium. The only issue I had was during install and was not with the stereo itself but with the bracket that holds the stereo in position. I actually had to file out bigger holes in the plastic to match up with the holes in the stereo but not a big deal.

I installed this in a 2005 Chevy Trailblazer that had a shorted, older Sony head unit. Crutchfield's Master Sheet was great in taking me step by step through the installation process. I did have to make a call to Tech Support because I wasn't removing a factory head unit, but that quick phone call solved my problems. The unit is easy to use, although we had to try several attempts to get my wife's iPhone 5s to link up, but it automatically links every time now. I like the dual USB ports. We have the Bluetooth dongle in the front port and the rear port, on the cable, is routed to the glove box where I keep my old iPod video permanently attached and locked away safely. I love the iPod controls on the front and the use of the remote. It was very easy to get used to the controls. And, on top of it all, it sounds great, even with my original factory speakers! I may upgrade them at some point as well.

Pros: Easy to install Easy to setup and use (didn't really need the manual) Looks good...and the endless variety of display colors has the coolness factors my kids like!

Cons: Only on the install. I had to tweak the aftermarket mounting bracket a bit to get it to fit, but was able to use the trim ring that came with the head unit for the install. The trim ring supplied with the kit doesn't fit this unit with or without the sleeve.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Was looking for a head unit to replace my 2005 stock Toyota Corolla radio. Wanted ipod control, bluetooth and HD radio. The KW-HDR81BT is pretty much the only game in town for a double-din, HD radio for under $200. First the good: HD radio is all it's made to be as far as quality (I'm talking about FM) CD quality. The ipod integration is basic, but functional. You get access to playlists, but beyond that, you'll be confined to playing the contents of a single album. So make some playlists. You can do about anything you want with the colors for the display. Now, for the bad: Absolutely the worst AM reception I've even seen. I'm in the LA area, and my stock Toyota head unit pulled in at least 25 very solid AM stations. I get less than 5 useable stations with this receiver. Three sports talk stations I listen to don't even come in. Doesn't quite reach the level of returning it, but the thought crossed my mind. The menu setup is pretty cryptic as well. Keep a manual at hand. Conclusion: If you don't care about AM, I wholeheartedly recommend this unit. The ipod integration with HD FM makes it a worthwhile investment. If you care about AM, you'll have to try the unit and see if it works for you.

Pros: HD radio, Ipod integration, bluetooth phone reception, Crutchfield install kit

Cons: AM radio (basically none), Somewhat confusing menu setup

The install was very easy and looks very good in my dash with the included kit from Crutchfield. It has made my factory speakers sound as good as they can! In fact, I'm now hesitant to change them out. They crank now and have very little distortion! It paired with my iPhone 5 very easily, per the manual. All features work well thusfar. The HD radio sounds great. Bluetooth works flawlessly with calls and streaming from iPhone. Although I didn't really think I'd like the color variations, it's neat to have for variety. Let me start this review by responding to all the reviews I saw that criticized the menu system on this receiver - it's actually pretty easy to navigate the menu. Yes some of the functions are not immediately obvious but with only a double din surface area to work with (and so many features), this unit makes great use of the limited space that's available. Seems to be built well and the buttons have a great responsive 'click'. Yes the default display is bright at night but the brightness of each color can be adjusted under the menu - with the proper color/brightness color selection, the unit is illuminated extremely well. I will say that under the brightest direct sunlight, the illumination fades somewhat. Doesn't anything of that nature do so? This is the only unit out there that for under $200, that has everything I wanted - Bluetooth, cd, HD radio, hands free calling with external mic, sub pre out...I'm extremely impressed. Would I buy this again? - Definitely

Pros: Bluetooth HD Radio External Calling Mic Sub Pre Out

Cons: Takes a few seconds to detect BT device and in turn external BT audio Built in EQ is lacking - solved with addition of external EQ, in my case, Clarion EQS746 made even my mediocre speakers sound great

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This JVC double din unit was installed in my 2013 Subaru Forester, it was relatively easy to install with all the necessary adapters included in the box from Crutchfield, there are some minor modifications to be made to the new radio before installation in the dash such as removing the face plate and mounting brackets and then attaching the supplied mounting kit, it was a little tricky with my particular car but all in all it worked out very well , I added the Axxess steering wheel control unit and that also works extremely well, seamless in fact just like the factory controls, the Bluetooth connection to my blackberry works well although not all features can be used with the JVC unit such as sms display and so forth, I recommend you go to the JVC website and from there you can look up your mobile phone model and it will list the Bluetooth available features for your phone, all in all though I am very satisfied with the sound quality and radio reception, it works and looks extremely well, a good value for the money, much better sound quality than the original Subaru factory radio hands down.

Pros: moderate installation time, all supplied wiring and mounting gear necessary was received, directions are very clear and in detail, phone support if necessary is a huge plus!

Cons: removing the original faceplate from new radio and installing the supplied mounting bracket for my vehicle proved a little tricky in the beginning, after careful study and experiment with the new mounting hardware and radio it all came together.

    2004 Ford Mustang
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My 2004 Mustang's stock Mach 460 system is a very odd beast. The stock headunit powers the mids/tweeters and it has two amps for subs/woofers. Importantly, any replacement unit should have a HPF to block the lows from distorting the sound in the mid/tweeters, and it needs a sub pre out with configurable crossover. Given that almost everything is done through a smartphone now (navigation, music) I looked for a solution to add Bluetooth to my stock unit, trying to avoid dealing with replacing the headunit. An adaptor for the stock unit's SAT input seemed like a good idea but would cost nearly $200 and not provide any kind of on-unit control. I settled on this unit and it fits my needs perfectly. Once the HPF was enabled for the amped output everything sounded great, better than the stock unit. The power output matches well with the mids/tweeters in my 04 Mustang, and lows sound great coming from the stock amps (hooked up though this unit's sub outputs). The included microphone was easily mounted behind the steering wheel and the cord hidden away behind the trim. The main reason for choosing this unit for me was to get good Bluetooth in my '04 Stang. That is near-perfect. It pairs with my Nokia Lumia 1020 with no issues. I have tested playback from USB and it works just fine, too; although I imagine most people will be like me and rely mainly on Bluetooth connectivity for audio playback.

Pros: Bluetooth works perfectly. HD radio support from this unit is a very nice plus. Suited my needs just right for my 2004 Mustang with Mach 460. Still using my stock amps and speakers and everything sounds good.

Cons: Navigating the menu system takes a little getting used to. JVC has a silly animated rectangle on the display that never stops (even when disabling demo mode). It's pointless but not a big deal. USB playback works well but navigating the memory stick could be improved. I'll usually use Bluetooth anyway so not a big deal.

I purchased this head unit to replace a Pioneer DEH-P6700MP CD/MP3/WMA receiver that I thought was going bad. First, I want to commend the Crutchfield Tech team for assisting me with a problem that turned out to be a faulty speaker. Tech assistance also helped me chose this new JVC replacement receiver based on all of my specifications and requirements. Installation was straight forward and required only minimal modification to my 2001 Ford Escape dash to accommodate this double-DIN unit. I'm satisfied with the ability to choose my favorite color display. The unit is so versatile and has so many modern features that it should suite my needs for years to come. I'm delighted that I can store all of my music on a single SanDisk 16GB USB low-profile flash drive. It also allows you to page through the various folders using up/down arrows if you first transfer your music onto the USB in separate folders based on categories. This feature is priceless. Since I don't need or use the Blutooth or Voice features, I cannot comment on this. One of my prerequisites for this unit was that it have a prominent display of the clock, which it does. My only complaint involves an anomaly that oddly enough, no other reviewers have mentioned. After about two weeks of use, I noticed the unit displaying 'Reading' for 3 - 5 minutes and would not read my music source without requiring resetting first. The Tech center promptly exchanged my unit, but I continue to experience the same issue

    Pros: USB input; HD Radio; Blutooth; has all the modern features that should continue to be relevant for years to come; easy installation;

    Cons: Continuous 'Reading' anomaly on two brand new units;

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've been jealous of the sound system in my wife's car for two years now so on a whim I started researching new units on Crutchfield's site. It didn't take long to narrow it down to this JVC - I needed the same size as the original Rockford Fosgate in my Nissan Xterra and I wanted bluetooth, HD radio (106.1 The Corner baby!), CD and AUX inputs. I was delighted on all accounts - my Android phone paired immediately and while it has limitations with regard to hands-free operation I was streaming audio from multiple sources immediately. Spotify on the go - yay. Many prior reviews were fairly critical of the menu system and settings changes. Maybe because I'm a nerd but I had no problem with it. While the layout may be more accommodating (like EQ settings more readily available) I stepped through each setting and had everything working (and sounding correctly - apparently Crutchfield installers are bassheads) in about 30 minutes. Only after I had completed did I browse through the manual to ensure I didn't miss anything. I do wish more media information presented itself for display. While this may be an issue with bluetooth stack in my smartphone I can't give JVC a pass on HD radio information. My 19 year unit being replaced had no problem showing station, artist and song information but the KW-HDR81BT shows nothing. This is a mystery. I was unable to transfer my phonebook but did set up favorites for quick dialing. Also, boo on iPhone features and little for Android.

Pros: Display and text size Customizable display colors HD Radio It plays CD's!

Cons: 3-band EQ Poor transfer of media info (source-dependent) Crutchfield installation team apparently did not plan well for this unit, my wife was forced to go back to Crutchfield for another appointment four hours later than the original to complete the installation, apparently installing the microphone took another hour (huh??). We weren't very pleased with either this or an installation bill that was higher than quoted (but was discounted after she insisted).

    Great Radio

Pros: Works great, syncs easily with Bluetooth phone, plays ipod songs seamlessly. HD radio is excellent. Have no idea how high the volume will go because I have to back it off before I get to the high end.

Cons: Unclear installation instructions, required a call to tech support who quickly resolved the issue.

sounds good, looks good works great.

I got this as a gift from my mother in law. I really like this jvc unit, there are many sound options, colors and many other setyings

Pros: I really like the Sound quality, multi color settings, ipod auxiliary, pandora.

Cons: Doesn't fit properly in a 2012 scion xd, it sticks out to far leaving part of my dash that suppose to click tight, is now loose and there is 1/4 inch gapes on both sides. Blue tooth works but .......i would rate it a 2. Due the poor call quality, you can hear the person your talking to but unless you have the bluetooth mic right by your mouth and talk loud they wont hear you clearly.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this particular deck because of it's features: HD Radio, Ipod control, and 20 watts per channel with a subwoofer pre-out. Wow, was I surprised at the sound quality of this deck!! The clarity and bass blows me away!! I 've installed it in my VW Passat Wagon that has the Monsoon sound system; it interfaced beautifully and sounds about 100x better than the original factory deck!! The bass is full and deep and for regular listening I really don't need to add a sub; however for those times where I really want to crank it I will add one!! Getting ready to put this same deck in my wife's Scion XB, I can hardly wait to see the results there. The reps at Crutchfield let me know that the mosfet amplifier in these is RATED, so it's RMS output is real. No wonder it sounds so good! The clarity on the FM, CD, and IPod is astounding. Detail in some music I never noticed before.

Pros: the metra install kit is a "one way" design. If you make a mistake, want to re-route your back usb cable or blue tooth mic, you will have a very tough time getting the deck back out!! I would suggest using the included sleeve that comes with the deck if you can.

Cons: ????? hard pressed to think of any!!!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a very nice unit for the money. I hooked it up to a 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid WITH the JBL premium sound, so I needed to tie into the factory amp. This all would have been simple enough, but I tried to add the Axxcess ASWC-1 Steering Wheel Control interface and this caused all kinds of problems. After several calls to tech support (which is very good at Crutchfield), the problem could not be diagnosed, so I am returning the steering wheel control. If you have the same vehicle, you should skip the steering wheel control as Axxess does not even have the correct wiring configuration for this car. All of that being said, I love the stereo! The sound is incredible and I do enjoy the hi-def radio. This thing is packed full of features and the Bluetooth works well. Customizing the radio and using all of the features takes time and patience, but after you learn the menus, it is great to have so many customizing options. Overall, this is definitely worth the money. Also, mine was "open box" but in great shape with NO issues.

Pros: Lots of features, excellent sound, Hi-Def Radio AND Bluetooth at a good price

    Cons: None!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this as a replacement for a failing factory unit in my 2011 ford f150 service truck. I did not need or want a touchscreen unit in a work truck and simply wanted something that was double din with bluetooth, sirius xm, HD Radio and a front usb input. This unit fit the bill with a front aux input and limited android support as well as a bonus. Sound is much better than stock and the bluetooth works extremely well, however the HD radio text displays on some channels, but not all (the Kenwood in my car displays all text info on all HD stations) and the menu layout is very frustrating and difficult to use. Could have used the real esate for better display as the stock radio actually had a more detailed display for mp3s and such. Overall good for the money and satisfies my needs. Just patience is required to set up and learn to navigate the poor interface and menu controls.

Pros: Good sound and bluetooth performance, front usb and aux in with Android support (although limited), Double din without touchscreen and DVD, good value

Cons: Text does not display on some HD stations, very difficult to navigate menus and setup, very basic eq and display looks very dated

Love the unit, sound is great, Bluetooth works great, plugged my TomTom audio output into AUX, and use the other USB for iPod/iPhone for Pandora.I wish the AUDIO and EQ SETTINGS would come up first, in the MENU, but guess I'll survive; it's just a pain to have to scroll through other choices to get to my most used selectio9ns (maybe fixable in a future firmware update JVC?.)

    2001 Toyota Highlander
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The 6-CD changer in our Highlander's OEM radio failed a few months ago. I found out it would cost at least $150 just to repair the CD player, so I decided to replace the OEM unit with a more capable aftermarket one. I chose this JVC model. It has lots of useful features, while still being simple enough for my non-tech-savvy wife to operate. Ordering the radio, wiring harness and mounting adapter was a breeze. The instructions, plus the Crutchfield tech line, made installation fairly simple. When I first tried out the new radio, the AM band would not work. The Crutchfield tech folks quickly told me which extra wire to connect up to get the AM to work. I am very pleased with the performance of the JVC. The AM and FM receivers work very well. The CD player is fine, too. The unit's internal amp provides plenty of volume out of the speakers, without any distortion that I can notice. The large volume knob is easy to reach and use while driving. I LOVE having that USB input on the front! I loaded up tons of our favorite music onto a tiny-sized, 32GB flashdrive that barely protrudes from the USB slot on the face of the radio. I no longer need to carry stacks of CD's in the car and frequently swap them out. Hooray! The Bluetooth function, which I paired up to my wife's cell phone, occasionally won't work, and I have to re-pair them. Despite that minor annoyance, I am very pleased with both the radio and with Crutchfield's impressive customer service.

Pros: The KW-HDR81BT has quite a few very useful features for the price. The display is nice and easy to see, even in daylight. The controls are reasonably easy to understand and use. The large volume knob is easy to reach and use while driving. The USB input on the front, and the ability to access and play large numbers of music files from a flashdrive in the USB slot, is a fantastic feature. The Bluetooth allows you to use your cell phone hands-free without having to use an earpiece.

Cons: The Bluetooth fairly regularly fails to detect my wife's cell phone, necessitating a re-pairing (which takes only about 30 seconds). On the other hand, the Bluetooth in the radio always tries to pair with my own cell phone when I'm in the car, even though I do not want my phone paired with the Bluetooth in my wife's car. Somewhat annoying. When playing music from a flashdrive, the unit often changes from the "all random" mode to "random off" mode. Not a big problem, just another annoyance.

I was looking for a head unit to replace my factory radio in my 2003 GMC Savana van, and this one caught my eye. After having it professionally installed, I was impressed with the sound quality, but found it difficult to figure out the settings. The factory manual is difficult to understand (At least for a bricklayer) so more trial and error will be needed.

Pros: Basic looking unit that didn't scare me away with all the features I don't need.

Cons: Probably is the simplest unit out there, but I still find it difficult to learn how to operate. And the factory manual is difficult to understand. I'll just have to spend some time figuring it out.

i got this item because #1-it had HD & BT, #2-it was a scratch n' dent item, #3-it appeared to have simpler user input buttons. Don't be afraid of Crutchfield scratch and dent, it's more like an "open box". I couldn't find any dents or scratches. As usual, Crutchfield's customer service is second to none. I'm a little disappointed it my misconception of "simpler", however understand that I'm extra critical about such things because that's my profession. I'm happy with the product despite its shortcomings and realistically, they all have shortcomings.

Pros: Fairly simple to set up and operate. I was able to get everything setup and running (including my phone) w/o looking at the manual. The manual is pretty good with pictures to augment the description of the features. I can't comment on the sound because I still have factory speakers. Reception is great, but that's HD for you.

Cons: Several things really annoy me with this radio. 1) I have to navigate a menu system to adjust some common things like fader and equalizer 2) poor use of display real estate thereby leaving less room real info 3) computer jargon or cryptic abbreviations like "SSM" have crept into the interface. I need the manual to figure out the messages 4) When selecting input the radio should know I'm using "Rear USB" for the BT dongle.

I have a 2006 Nissan Xterra with standard sound system. The old unit CD died on me. This is second unit from Nissan which had the same problem. The instructions from Crutchfield are very good. The main problem I have is the panel does not fit after I installed the unit. The panel is pressed against the unit's rim. There is about 1/4 inch gap. If I remove the rim, the panel fit perfectly but the unit looks ugly with metal exposing. I even tried to use the rim that came with the kit. That did not work either. That 1/4 inch gap is not that noticeable, I just need to fill that gap so nothing can drop inside. Beside it is too much work to take it back out and return the unit. The sound is great. More functions than I needed so it takes me longer to navigate to the functions that I wanted.

Pros: Great sound, even with stock speakers. More functions than I needed. Easy to follow instructions.

Cons: Does not really fit to my SUV. Leave about 1/4 inch gap. Not simple to navigate the functions.

philziggy from Newburg, MD on 11/16/2013

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A ton of great features and they all work, but not painlessly. You'll see a lot of the same comments in the other reviews, and I'll list the major issues. These include poor day illumination, complex menu navigation, no clock display, non-intuitive adjustments like eq and color adjusting, and a really bad users manual - you won't get much help there. But all features do eventually work. I had a tough time pairing my LG Intuition android phone and iPod touch, but eventually got there. My unit does display song titles, etc. over bluetooth; some have said theirs don't. And my bluetooth phone conversations are clear on both ends. I'm just a bit disappointed in the music sound quality; for my taste it distorts a bit too quickly - but you may never notice it. So I assume it's a little under-powered. I had a difficult installation in a Bose-equipped 2002 Cadillac Eldorado. But customer service is Crutchfield's forte. Car stereos are getting more and more complex, and it is essential for the DIYer to have tech support that can be reached easily, will walk you through an issue, and stay on a problem until it's resolved. Primarily because there are mistakes in the printed instructions, or they are so vague that you need clarification. This applies to the JVC unit, the interface unit, and the mounting kit (which I had hoped would be a bit nicer). My installation was not smooth, but help was there when I needed it. Thanks Lefty! I would not buy from anyone else for these reasons.

Pros: Many, many features that are truly useful. A fair price for what you get.

Cons: Menu should have most frequently used features first, not alphabetical, makes adjustments while driving difficult. Almost useless manual. Set aside alot of time to set up bluetooth, colors, eq, and just getting familiar with how the menu navigation works. Stick with it and don't get frustrated. Call tech support for help. For a DIY install, don't follow installation instructions blindly, they contain errors; allow yourself time to look at thing carefully before taking a step that can't be undone

I've had my JVC in my car now for about 3 weeks and I am VERY impressed. I purchased the "scratch and dent" version and saved about $90, and when it arrived, was surprised that it looked brand new (didn't have a scratch OR a dent!). The sound quality is great, look is great, customization is great, feature set is great, and Bluetooth integration is great. Super easy to install, very easy to operate (great BIG dial for volume). HD radio quality is top-notch. Integration with my iPhone 5 is excellent. Listening to books on tape and music while I drive AND having my phone charge is a great bonus. Music / book playback starts up right where I left off (same with Pandora). Siri compatibility is nice too (although with my Honda Element the mic placement is far away from me and the cabin is a bit on the noisy side so although I do use the hands-free calling, it does get a little annoying to callers on the other end when I'm on the freeway.

Pros: Easy to install, great sound, great iPod integration, nice look and customization options (colors). Really like the integration of the iPhone (listening to audio AND having Siri come through with GPS navigation directions).

Out of the box, it was a very easy stereo to install in my 2011 Frontier. The harness wired right up and everything fit just as I expected. It plays CDs great, the radio comes in crystal clear and hooking up my phone via bluetooth was a snap. The interface is not too difficult to figure out, though as big as the unit is, it would have been nice if they could fit more on the display. I did not like the JVC Smart Music app. Maybe I just need to give it another try, but initially, it was very confusing and every time I started my truck, the stereo would automatically switch to the JVC app no matter if I was previously listening to a CD or MP3s. Uninstalled it as I could find no way to change that behavior. As far as listening to MP3s go, It is kind of a pain. The stereo has no playlist capabilities and it does not read MP3 info. If it does, it ignores it. If you want any Playlist like features, you essentially have to create a folder for each playlist you want and put the songs into that folder. If you want a song on more than one playlist, you will need to have that song in each separate folder. Meaning, you will have the same file in multiple folders. It also only sorts the song by file name instead of reading MP3 info. As big as this stereo is, I find it sad they could not fit in these few extra features.

Pros: Easy to install, customizable lights, plays MP3s, Bluetooth

Cons: No Playlist, does not read MP3 info, Lack of space on large display,

Just what I wanted. For about the same price of an iPod adapter I got the whole package. I can leave my iPod in the glove box and control everything from the receiver face - how cool! It looks great in my Ridgeline and sounds even better. Great Crutchfield customer service - gave great directions when I had a question on the wiring. The only complaint is the mounting kit - required some modifying (I.e., sawing and drilling) of the kit to fit the receiver correctly. It works but not the quality of the OEM brackets. I'm looking forward to adding a steering wheel control adapter and subwoofer. Great product and relatively simple to use!!!!

Pros: Simple install, great customer support from Crutchfield, iPod is fully controlled from the receiver, and sounds great.

Cons: Mounting bracket is cheap (i.e., plastic compared to OEM metal) and required modifying (i.e., sawing and drilling) to make it fit the radio completely. It looks great in my Honda Ridgeline after the mods.

    Factory radio replacement 2005 Sierra

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I love my new stereo that replaced my broken radio on my 2005 GMC Sierra. I bought this stereo so I could use my ipod/iphone on the stereo. With that said, my Apple stuff works great with a cord or Bluetooth. The stereo looks and sounds great with the factory Bose speakers(I am replacing the rear ones soon). I love that I have Bluetooth now w/o having to have a gadget struck in my ear to talk on my phone.

Pros: price, looks and JVC quality.

Cons: Too many adapters needed to make the stereo interface with the factory wires. I bought the recommended adapter by the advisor but it did not work for on the steering wheel controls so I had to buy another adapter to make those work. No way to make the factory XM sat radio work (not sat radio ready!) w/o more adapters or interfaces I guess, I looked for a way! (running out of room in the dash too). I will BT my Pandora or iTunes radio anyway and cancel the XM service.

I had questions on install & the Crutchfield tech team was excellent! JVC tech was not. Got all my answers from Crutchfield so it made my experience enjoyable. JVC claimed it's an old model but who cares it had all the features I wanted and is easy to use. Satellite radio addition was a little pricey but I wanted it, it's not a necessary item but you need to buy 2 seperate pieces and hide them for Satellite Radio.

Pros: Great Value. Customization features make it your own, especially the color combinations.

Cons: Pricey to add Satellite Radio.

It is a very nice radio for the money, and I enjoy all the features the radio. It was a big step up from the radio in my Honda Ridgeline Then a big thank you to Crutchfield support. I could not have installed the radio without your help, and that is why I purchased the radio thru Crutchfield. They are the best at what they do.

Pros: The bluethooth and sink the wife and my phone in the truck. The HD radio channels, the playing mp3 files. It sounds way better than the stock radio. Wish I would have switched a long time ago.

Unit was easy to install in my 2008 Kia Sorento. Since I did not replace the original speakers or AMP the sound quality is not that much different when playing CD's but the HD radio is significantly better then the analog it replaced. The BT was a pain to get to pair but eventually figured it out and seems to work good so far but have not used it on the road yet. I use this most often to play Pandora though my cell while driving using the aux port. That works great

Works as advertised. Nice to have BT in my car now. I'm on call with work regularly, and sometimes need to talk on the phone for short periods. The HD presets are a great addition. This is the 4th HD radio I have purchased (2 mobile and 2 in home), and I really like the HD quality and variety of subchannels.

Pros: HD Presets, BT operation works great with the Droid, Day/Night color options, Installation was straightforward, Crutchfield tech support answered my wiring questions on first call, with no hesitation.

Cons: No way to get rid of that stupid flashing square up in the right hand corner. At least I haven't found out how yet. Also, can't display title/artist and clock simultaneously. Maybe in the right hand corner...a spot for the clock!

The bluetooth sounds great, but is a little annoying to set up with a new phone at first, then you get used to it and its fine. Sound is amazing compared to the stock HU.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My 1995 Nissan Maxima is currently my 3rd car that I have had since new. She is in mint condition with only 45000 original miles. The only problems I have ever had were the injectors, and the Bose HU which died on me for some unknown reason. I chose this JVC because I needed a double din unit to replace the old Bose HU. I wanted Bluetooth, Satellite, USB, and the HD Radio was gravy. The problem was in the specs. Most of these premium aftermarket radios have FM Sensitivity no greater than 9.3 dBf ( 0.8microVolts/75 ohms). This HD Radio has a special diasII tuner that supposedly provides even better sensitivity to pick up a distant digital signal ( instead of the standard FM analog signal). Alas, the specs of this radio are stated as 11.3 dBf, not 9.3 dBf. I tried for weeks to clarify the actual specs with JVC, but could never get beyond their call center customer service. They could only read what the manual said, but could not discuss the engineering reasoning behind the lower sensitivity of the higher end diasII tuner. manual. After weeks of frustration, I just bought this unit ( the only HD double din CD receiver offered) and hope for the best. If I can't get many HD stations, then I will know their 11.3 dBF was correct. I am hoping the manual is wrong and the correct spec is 9.3. First impressions of the receiver is the sound quality is amazing when pumped through the original Bose Premium speakers.

Pros: Great sound with lottsa toys to fiddle with

    Cons: Inadequate tech support.

    2005 Infiniti G35
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am not happy with this unit. First, it does not always connect to my iPhone 4. About 1 out of 3 tries, it refused to Bluetooth pair. 2nd. you can't start the music via Blue Tooth. You still have to manually manipulate the phone to start playing music. 3rd. you can't end a phone call. Again, you must pick up the phone to end a phone call. Other than that, its actually a fairly decent car stereo. Sound quality is very good, and I like the different lighting options, HD radio, and digital information screen. The voice quality is solid on phone calls. However, my main purpose in this investment (the unit, the associated A/C controls and the install, and the steering wheel controls) was to go BT and no longer touch the phone. WRONG. I am holding the phone and staring at it more NOW than I was before. Maybe I got a bad unit, and maybe some of the things I want are simply not available at my price point. But I am really let down with this investment. My biggest pain is that the device does not always pair with my iPhone 4, and that is a defect in the device itself. There are other issues as well, but the inconsistent BT pairing is very irritating. I am deeply considering paying the fee to uninstall the stereo and go back to original. It hurts that much. Yes I had an IT person do all the tricks to make it pair more consistently with my iPhone. I don't know if I got a bad device or if this much frustration should be expect

Pros: Good sound quality, easy to read digital display, and nice color features. I have not used the front USB port nor the Aux front port, but they seem interesting.

Cons: BT does not work consistently. You can't end a phone call from the stereo; there is simply no 'hang up' button. You can't start the music from the stereo; there is no 'play' button. Both issues make you pick up the phone and stare at it. I am staring at the phone more NOW while I am driving that I was before. The A/C controls that Crutchfield provided for a good price are inferior to the original controls. I want the original A/C controls back. I am considering returning this purchase

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am very disappointed in this product. I used it for three months in my Accord, then switched it to a new Civic (with about 2 months in between), so it's had just over a year of use. Here is a rundown of the issues I have: 1) The front USB port is dead. Apparently, so is the flash drive that was originally in there. No other drive will work in there now. I guess it's possible that a bad flash drive blew out the port, but the rear one still works (Bluetooth Dongle). So I'm guessing that the port blew out the drive rather than vice versa. 2) CD drive is awful. It skips (or won't read) a number of CD-Rs that play fine on other drives. Discs often will not eject or stick in the middle of the eject process. Sometimes turning off the power and turning it back on will do the trick, sometimes more drastic measures are needed. 3) The BT interface is dreadful. Sometimes doesn't recognize my cell phone, sometimes it does. Navigation of music stored on the phone is tricky. 4) Display of song titles from files or discs. After you go through the gyrations needed to display a song title, it scrolls through the title twice, then locks on the first few characters. Oh--you were watching the road? Go through the cycle again and hope you catch it. 5) Often "forgets" EQ settings. And the process of setting them is so complex that I've given up and just use a preset, which isn't so easy to set either.

Pros: I like the double-DIN form factor and the price was reasonable.

Cons: Almost everything about this unit is lame. Manufacture quality is obviously poor, and the interface is not user-friendly.

This is an excellent unit for it's value. I had it professionally installed thru a Crutchfield authorized installer on my '07 Mazda 5. The change in sound quality was amazing! I kept my previously installed amp and speakers (purchased from Crutchfield years before) and it's a new car. The installers charged me extra for verifying my speaker connections, hands free control install and re-wiring the amp. In all I spent $260 on the install and worth every penny.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm impressed with most things this unit does. When using my wife's Iphone, it connects and plays either with the USB or Bluetooth (usually). I've had HD radio for a while with another unit, and this unit works as it should. I am disappointed that I can't do much with my Android except stream over bluetooth. When plugged into the USB, I've never gotten it to doing anything but charge, and I've tried installing some apps from JVC, but that hasn't helped either. Other than turning the volume up and down, the controls on this thing are terrible and not intuitive. Maybe if I used it everyday (it's in my wife's car) I'd get the hang of it, but unless you're a complete geek and just like tinkering, this thing is not very intuitive. Car stereos should be simple so you don't wrap your self around a telephone pole while you're driving. I'm usually pretty tech savvy, but even after reading the manual, I couldn't get this thing to play my wife's Iphone over USB (not bluetooth, that worked fine, but she wanted to control with the receiver and needed USB). Finally after going to support and downloading an firmware update and following instructions, we can get it to work sometimes. But it does stream well over bluetooth, so she uses it that way. And speaking of Bluetooth, the handsfree system works OK, but the microphone isn't the greatest. Have to speak loudly and lean it toward it to get it to work. If it's raining, forget about it. Overall I like the unit though

Pros: Bluetooth audio streaming, HD radio, Iphone compatibility. Audio quality for the price is excellent. Music from CD's sound excellent (much better than bluetooth streaming). Haven't tried a USB thumb drive and mp3's to see how they compare though. Oh, and an A+ for Crutchfield's included installation gear. Had to do some soldering which I've never done before but was pretty easy. BB charges extra for kit and no instructions! Always buy car stereos here.

Cons: Not intuitive controls, Microphone for bluetooth does not work well. Android users are pretty much limited to bluetooth audio streaming (unless you know something I don't).

Can stream music from the phone, access the phone contact list and take and make calls. No hassle, no fuss. Crutchfield provided a new faceplate and mounting brackets. Didn't like the aftermarket mounting brackets though. They expect you to hang the radio from the front faceplate. Not cool, the factory radio is bolted in with sturdy brackets.. I used the factory brackets, just had to drill a few holes in the bracket to match up with the JVC head unit.

Was looking to replace my stock Toyota radio with XM, I did a quick search and the Kenwood from Cruchfield came up. After jumping on chat with Keith he helped me pick a unit that would work with Sirius not XM. He came up with the JVC. We worked through all the pats (some included for free) and I hit submit on the order. I had to buy the ASWC-1 for steering wheel control function. All the right connectors came and soldered up connections and pop'd it in. Sound great and the Sirius was real easy as well.

Pros: Great sound great price and real easy to install if you have some basic car radio install skills. (Have to solder all the wires for the cars connectors but they are color for color or you can crimp. Interface with my Droid Razr maxx with out any problems.

Cons: The manual that comes with it sucks and missing a ton of info on the operation. Goto JVC's web site and download the PDF version has all the missing info the one in the box doesnt have. Takes some time getting used to the setup and moving around. I still read the manual on to do things.

Installed this unit in my 2006 Honda Pilot with Axxess steering wheel control. Installed easy, Bluetooth works well, sound quality is amazing over my factory speakers. I lost the use of my sub by putting this unit in, however it pushes the speakers so hard, the whole system has so much more bass than with factory sub. Tons of power, easy to install. Recommend the Axxess control for steering wheel if you have that, it auto recognizes and works flawlessly. Also, JVC is one of the few units the Axxess auto finds the deck, auto funds car, and is done in under 1 min!!! Awesome stereo for the price. It was down to this and the kenwood double din, the HD tuner and having a front and rear USB is what pushed me to JVC even though all my cars always had Kenwood or Alpine. JVC is a top notch company and this receiver has all the options. Color selection is cool, Siri on my IPhone 5 comes over speakers clear and mic picks up voice with good clarity. Pairs up with pandora and iheart radio well. This unit also has DAC's built in for analog audio conversion...overall very pleased with this unit!

Pros: HD tuner , front and back USB, color choices, ease of use, Bluetooth

Cons: Bluetooth a little tricky to get set up but once you figure it out, it's a breeze.

    Clean Looking Install

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed in '95 Nissan 240SX. Crutchfield wiring harnesses saved a ton of time and accurately matched up to the OEM harness for the power & signal pin locations. I found conflicting info on the web re: the pin locations on the OEM harness, but the Crutchfield rep assured me they had it right on their Crutchfield wiring harness... and they did! The simple layout of this JVC unit integrates nicely with the rest of the dash, which was helped by the free Crutchfield trim plate. The HD Radio signal reception in my area is good and this JVC unit captures it well. The HD Radio feature was the determining factor for me to choose this JVC unit vs. similar units. I did another head unit installation last year w/ product purchased elsewhere and honestly, Crutchfield does save you as much as they advertise when it comes to the free installation gear.

Pros: Great technical support from Crutchfield. HD Radio is clean CD like quality. Good ergonomic layout with knob & buttons. Plenty of color options to help match rest of dash or personal preference. F+R+SW RCA outputs. Remote can be placed on a key ring to help keep this from getting lost in car.

Cons: Bluetooth mic required bending of the metal base to adjust vertical angle vs other mics I've seen that pivot on a circular axis. The preset verticle angle is fine if placed at base of steering wheel, but I chose the stem on the rearview mirror since this location is closer to the driver's mouth.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So it's been a number of years since I bought an aftermarket stereo. Took forever to choose. When all said and done, I chose a "manual" head unit over a DVD since this was going into my "tactile sensory" car, the one that I pay a lot of attention to driving it. (Read: Sunday morning corner carver) I wanted all controls *right there* instead of fumbling for screen icons. Plus, I know I'll never use the video function. So, why a middling rating? Well, unit is nice but adjusting any settings is a pain in the butt. Too many dang pushes of buttons AND, I don't like the fact that things like display and color settings take precedence over audio adjustments; that is, they are the first menu selections. I set the color ONCE and that's it, done with. S'far as audio, however, depending on the type and source of the materials, I wanted quick/easy adjustment. Too complicated on this HU. I have not yet tried all the features such as Bluetooth streaming or even calls since I prefer not to converse on the phone while driving anyhow. But if yer a road warrior with need for frequent calls, the BT feature is key. Sound is fine once I got my audio setting dialed... so much better and powerful than my stock HU that it clearly underscores the need for better speakers (my next purchase) and, because I like to drive with the window open, more power and possibly a sub. Overall, a good value and perhaps when I do upgrade my factory speakers, it will have the sound I really want.

Pros: Good price point for such a full featured head unit. Installation accessories included is a bonus for sure. Crutchfield service (delivery and packing) right on the money.

Cons: Read my comments on the audio adjustment controls.

I installed one in a 2003 Nissan Altima and 2008 Ford Edge. both look great in them. The Bluetooth and HD radio is the greatest . It works flawlessly with the iphone, Pandora and iheart radio. The sound does go in and out on AM radio with I'm trying to set the feature to remain on old analog . Great price with adapters. I always solder my wires for worrisome installation

Pros: Bluetooth and HD radio, 2 USB inputs, microphone, double DIN size

Awsome radio. Ipod jack in front bluetooth in rear. Great for a year in my 2011 Camero. I installed it July of 2012 after waiting for the sosche dash kit. Yesterday the software went to heck and I am having many issues that JVC says I will have to take it out and send it to New York to have it fixed. Its not easy to replace because newer units do not have same pin arrangements as older units.

    Pros: Meets everything I wanted

Cons: After one year the software went to heck and I will be out of a radio for an unknown time due to having it repaired.

I purchased this unit as a retrofit for a 2000 Bravada for my son. The built in bluetooth made handsfree calling easy and safe. The integration with an iPhone for music playback works well and the front USB port provides a nice way to add you music library with a small USB drive. Fit and finish are good. I would recommend this unit to a friend.

Nissan wanted over 1.5K to replace my Bose OEM for my 1998 Maxima, so good thing I went to Crutchfield to find one that would fit my console, and I did.

Pros: I have a great sounding system in a 1998 car, where I can hear my iPods (even my 3rd generation iPod with Dock Connector )

Cons: Smart Phone App for Android and the BlueTooth connection drop from time to time, forcing me to disconnect Bluetooth connection via the phone drops . While the App for iOS devices has TuneIn among its applications to directly work with the receiver, Android does not enjoy that privilege

RichS from St Louis MO on 7/5/2013

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased primarily for the hands free feature. I have an iPhone 5 and it works flawlessly. However the settings on this unit are NOT intuitive, at least to me. The sound quality is excellent, the variety of EQ settings is great, I love the HD radio feature but have a problem switching over from FM. The clarity with the hands free is very good but I'm still trying to figure out the easiest way to switch from radio or iPod to make a call and then back. I though it would be a push one button process but it isn't.

Pros: Great value, great sound, easy install - especially with the Crutchfield people a phone call away.

Cons: NOT intuitive. Not simple to switch between different functions.

It does all of this really well while being easy to set up and use. It also sounds way better than the factory unit I pulled out. I put this in my 2005 Civic and it was a huge upgrade. BTW call quality is good over the blue tooth as well.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Perfect fit for 2000 MB ML 320. With wiring kit, installation was very easy. Hands free function worked flawlessly with my first Android phone, but does not with Samsung Galaxy Nexus. Despite this, I would recommend this receiver for the HD radio and Bluetooth functionality. Wish the amp had a just a bit more punch to it though.

Pros: Perfect fit for 2000 MB ML 320 even though it isn't listed as compatible. I measured twice before ordering and it fits in the dash like it was made to be there. No trim kit necessary with this vehicle. Works with Android and iDevices quite well. Love the fact it charges the device plugged into the USB port.

Cons: Hands free function worked flawlessly with my first Android phone, but does not with Samsung Galaxy Nexus. At times, Bluetooth functionality can be fickle, requiring a power down for both devices. Sometimes, receiver doesn't want to sync and sometimes, it's the phone. Going to attempt to contact JVC support about Bluetooth issues, but I expect the problems will be ignored since it doesn't appear there have been any updates since I bought the unit.

    Great Factory Replacement/Upgrade

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The OEM Head unit with in-dash 6-disc changer on my wife's Explorer started acting up. First discs wouldn't play reliably, and then other malfunctions occurred. After much deliberation we decided to replace the factory radio with this JVC unit. No it doesn't have a changer built in, but one disc is good enough, and the added features are much more useful. Bluetooth pairs with my wife's iPhone and mine easily for streaming iTunes, Pandora and handsfree phone conversations. Microphone for handsfree is also excellent. Sound quality seems like an upgrade from the stock radio and love the fact that we can customize both day and night color schemes for the buttons and display. For night time we choose a green to match the stock dash lights, but chose a white for the daytime to make it easier to see in bright glares. HD radio is a nice plus, but I'm not sure its a feature I would require if buying again. Front AUX input and USB port (for input and charging) are nice added features. We chose this model over one of the touchscreeen head units for safety. When there are kids in the car and traffic on the road, the last thing I want to do is look at a screen to see where a button is. The large dial and other tactile buttons are easy to find without looking at the unit to control most basic features so your eyes can stay on the road where they belong. Crutchfield phone support was topnotch when I called for assistance!

Pros: Bluetooth pairs well Handsfree sounds great Customizable color display Great sound quality USB and Aux input in front Simple installation

    Cons: No detachable face

This is a really great head unit, and at this price it should be really, really hard to beat. Once I got the Bluetooth connected to my phones (after you confirm the passkey on your phone press the volume knob on this head unit to also confirm on the stereo itself - I was skipping that step for a while and wondering why my phone would fail to pair. Silly me!) I knew I'd never be able to go back to aux inputs, tape or FM adapters again. Works flawlessly, the head unit buttons control Doubletwist on my phone too and I can even select different colors of my choice for the head unit to flash depending on if my personal or work phone is ringing. I leave my phone's bluetooth on, and when I get in the car and turn it on it automatically connects somewhere just shy of a minute after I start the car. USB and aux input on the front as well. Love the built in crossovers too - selectable low pass for the sub and high pass for the cabin speakers. You can even program it to automatically tune to different radio stations depending on the time of day! With the free Crutchfield wiring harness and installation bracket this was by far the easiest, neatest head unit installation I've ever done. I couldn't be happier!

Pros: So many features... HD radio, bluetooth audio streaming and call handling, two separate illumination zones with independent selectable colors - even a USB port with enough juice to charge a phone if you need to. So much bang for the buck.

Cons: None that I can think of.

We have had the unit installed for a couple of weeks now. It works and sounds good as expected. This was installed on a 2002 Ford Explorer. We used the existing sub-woofer but it would not work plugging into the sub-woofer port and we had to plug the sub-woofer into either the front or rear channel of the regular speaker plugins. At this time I am not sure what effect this is having on the sound quality, if any. Because we plugged it into the rear channel I think the front speakers are having to cover the full range but I am not sure. While I am satisfied with this unit I would recommend others to by a DVD unit. I don't have time to read a big manual to learn how to use it. It will take me hours to figure out how to use the things I use and it would have been much easier with a DVD unit. I have not contacted Crutchfield about the Sub-woofer port issue to see what the issue might be, but this did not hook up work as I expected it would. I may or may not contact them as I don't know if I want to spend another 2-3 hours taking the car apart.

Pros: Fits in well and looks like it belongs in the car. Sounds good.

Cons: Too complex to figure out how to use everything. Not very intuitive. Spend the extra money and by a DVD unit. Sub-woofer plug in port did not work as I was led to believe it would.

I couldn't believe the sound that was coming out of my stock speakers and wondered why the heck I didn't buy this sooner.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

    Only 50% happy.

Pros: The sound is very good, if not fantastic, Even with my OEM speakers and the original combined amplifier-subwoofer removed, it still sounds like I have a sub-woofer in the system (without boosting the bass control). The HD stations and CDs sound even better. Music from a storage device, connected by a USB cable, sound very good and much better, obviously, than from the storage device (e.g. cellphone) itself.

Cons: The unit was too big to replace my OEM radio. I had to cut some plastic away from the air-handling system at the bottom and use 90º connectors for the antenna and RCA outputs for the subwoofer I added. The color display would not program properly, to get a green color, I had to select red for the display. The Bluetooth only pairs with my Samsung cellphone when I get in the car for the first time a day. On subsequent stops around town, it will not connect again when I get in the car.

Everything as advertised, excellent sound quality that really brings life to my factory speakers, but now I'm ready to replace those. As expected installation instructions were flawless and I was done in less than an hour. If you have factory steering wheel controls go for the adapter kit, it's well worth it.

Pros: Great sound, love the bluetooth/Pandora feature.

Cons: Getting a slight reverb echo on some HD stations. Only lasts a second or two but it makes me wonder. Metra kit is a little disappointing. Needed to make some modifications for a snug fit.

Got it installed in a 2007 Hyundai Sonata, the fit is not very good with the radio sticking out of the Metra kit, there are gaps between the radio and the opening in the kit, and the kit itself is not flush with the sides. The sensitivity seems to be worse than the original factory radio, stations which were very clear before are now fading in and out. The switching between analog and HD also seems to cause some weird sound effects. The top right hand corner of the display has some flashing graphics which can't be turned off, and it is not conveying any useful information either, it is supposed to be for looks! Extremely annoying and distracting. MP3 files which used to play fine with original radio don't play on this unit.

Pros: Bluetooth and iPod connectivity, main reasons I got this radio

Cons: Poor mechanical fit, worse sensitivity compared to factory radio, no way to lock out switching between analog and HD, inefficient use of double DIN display, problem with MP3 CDs

This is a decent unit, but it does not properly support the iphone 5, and JVC has not issued a software update to allow it to do so. Moreover, JVC will not issue any information about whether it is working on an update, so if you buy this just cross your fingers. I've just installed the unit, and the sound is so much better than the stock unit it replaced, I find myself incapable of saying anything bad about sound quality. I live in metrowest Boston, where radio signals are good, so I have not yet experienced any of the HD issues reported. Installation was straightforward, and in accordance with the instructions. The only gotcha was the required removal of two additional metal panels on the sides of the unit before the Toyota brackets could be attached. The display is retro '70's. a little too busy for me, but all the information is there.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I reached in my wallet and spent more than I had anticipated on this unit. But after reading some other reviews about slow blue tooth connectivity, and poor quality sound on calls for the other cheaper units I looked at, I'm glad I spent the extra cash because this unit is great so far. The blue tooth connects quickly and, I haven't had any complaints about callers being able to hear me. There are lots of features on this, I haven't gotten a chance to figure everything out yet. JVC could have dumped the CD player if it would have saved me some money. With the extra HD stations, and the USB port and the Blue tooth connection I have a ton more listening options without having to carry CD's around anymore. I have to say I have a few friends with new Ford's where their phone snycs to the vehicle, and I was so jealous, now I feel like my Pontiac just got an upgrade and I'm not missing out on anything, and unlike them my car is almost paid off.

Pros: Bluetooth sync with my android phone, for hands free calling and more. Optional color displays for day or night. Don't know if it makes a difference for hands free calling I was able to install the mic on my rear view mirror and have had no problems with people hearing me.

Cons: Not sure how good the HD reception is supposed to be and if it is signal strength or a issue with the unit but it seems like I lose the HD signal a lot and I'm only 7 miles at the most outside of St Louis City. The instructions for the installation were confusing but with Crutchfield's great customer service I was able to get the help I needed, and probably saved a few bucks on the install.

Great Product! Amazing value at the price.

Pros: Much better sound quality than my factory Scion stereo. Actually this is the best sounding aftermarket stereo I've owned. Cool colors to match whatever interior you have.

Cons: The configuration is strange. Can be easier.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've returned this item because of only one reason, the radio tuner. In any mode of operation the tuner does not pull in stations well at all. There is a constant shifting between HD, stereo and mono that makes listening unbearable. And there are just some local station that it cannot receive clearly at all. I bought the unit for a variety of reasons, and for the most part it does a fine job with iPod integration and Bluetooth functions. But I do listen to local radio and this is where the radio falls far short of the mark.

Pros: Bluetooth audio streaming Easy to install

    Cons: Terrible radio tuner

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this head unit mainly because it has Bluetooth, Aux input and Ipod use ready. all these features work very well; i was only just slightly disappointed that the Bluetooth is a feature "included" and attaches to the end of a cord you can run from the back; or from the front USB ports; instead of being PART of the unit itself. once you get the sound set up the way you like; it puts out some nice quality sound even without an amp hooked up; put some extra pump into it by turning on the "load" feature.

Pros: good price, ease of most features to use, has front and back USB hookups for like iPod and/or Bluetooth module. sound quality is very good.

Cons: Bluetooth is not a "part" of the actual head unit; depending on how it sits in your dash in particular vehicle; the display looks dim if not seen strait on. Bluetooth sound quality sounds "boxed in" by people you are talking too.

This is a great product all features worked as described very satisfied.

Pros: Improved sound quality over my stock radio 10 fold even with my stock speakers. iPhone 4 works great hands free operation very nice. HD radio and iPod operation are a big plus completely solid in my case. I actually found the radio setup and operation manual very easy to understand on how the menus worked etc. etc.

Cons: Even If your handy with tools and wiring the install process can still be a bit challenging. The directions are bit vague in some areas so it may take some time to figure out or a call to Crutchfield. Took me a few hours to install but bottom line everything is working great and I saved some $$ to boot.

I've had the same JVC home receiver for about 18 years that's still works great . After the very easy installation with new Polk speakers I realized I waited way too long to replace my factory stereo. This stereo sounds almost as good as my home receiver. Crutchfield service was great , the install was easy, & now I'm rockin . Thanks

    Pros: All the features.

Cons: Could be easier access to the rear after modified install.

Very impressed with everything about this radio and with crutchfield. The tech support is amazing. The radio is up and running and I couldn't be happier with it. Bluetooth works very well and people don't have trouble hearing me. Hardest part of the process ended up being getting the factory deck out, but this was my first time doing this. With that being said and being my first time, this was a very easy install. Crutchfield made the process very easy and sent me everything I needed for a proper, easy install. Extremely happy with this purchase!

Pros: Great bang for your buck! Includes just about everything you could want. Other products have some but not all. JVC is a great pick!

Cons: None that I can think of. But Im not very picky about sound and tinkering with the sound settings which are the only drawbacks I could possibly see. This radio gives me everything I could want as a basic radio, CD, Itunes, Pandora kind of a guy.

    Excellent Head Unit

    2008 Nissan Frontier

This JVC unit had everything I was looking for: HD radio, BlueTooth, iPod connection, CD player, double-DIN, and adjustable colors. Installation was easy, especially with the Crutchfield installation package and instructions. Follow the instructions, take your time, and you should have no problems. The HD radio works great. I didn't realize how many of the local radio stations were HD, even out here in western North Carolina. When in range, their sound is very crisp and clean. The BlueTooth works perfectly. The unit comes with the BlueTooth unit installed in the rear USB port; I put it in the front port and used the rear for my iPod. This allowed me to run the cable behind the dash so I can keep the iPod out of sight. Speaking of which, the iPod is easily controlled from the front panel. I think I prefer to control it from the iPod, though, as it is easier to locate and find tracks. Either way, though, you have to take your eyes off the road. Adjustable colors were important because my Nissan Frontier has funky orange instrument lighting. This JVC will match the orange lighting when the lights are one, while using brighter blue/white lighting during the day. The only negative was that my stock speakers sounded like they were made out of old mailboxes once the JVC was installed, so I had to get new speakers!

Pros: Great features, easy to use, wonderful sound.

Cons: Plan on it: you have to get new speakers as well, or you'll kick yourself.

Good Value, loaded with features. Sounds great. I live about 30 miles from NYC so the HD channels tend to go in and out of HD because of the weak signal. Better when I get within 15 miles. CD, iPod, USB music are all crystal clear. Haven't tried bluetooth phone yet. Can change display colors but none of them are very visible in daytime when its sunny. USB won't charge my phone and locked up a non-iPod mp3 player.

    Pros: Looks, sounds great.

Cons: Need to be near city for good HD reception. Display not very visible in sunny daylight. There may be USB compatability issue with some devices.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I read the reviews on many radios before buying this JVC-HDR81BT, as I wanted HD and Bluetooth at a reasonable price. The installer gave me a 15 min. demonstration, and I have been able to use all basic functions without looking at the instruction book. The only thing I noticed was that the telephone button seems to only work for outgoings calls, but disconnects the incoming calls. No problem, just push the large control dial, and the incoming call is answered. The large control dial is not slippery as some reviewers said. You don't have to grab it, as the dial can be turned with the light touch of only one finger. This radio replaced the Bose radio in my 1998 Infiniti I30, and sounds better.

Pros: Incoming Bluetooth sound is great, and the people on the other end agree. The mic was installed on the rear view mirror. Enjoying my first HD radio sounds on AM and FM.

    Cons: None for my useage.

Overall, I believe the HDR81BT is a great product for the money - a terrific value. For me the sound quality is more than adequate. I purchased this receiver for the Bluetooth and HD radio capabilities more than for great sound quality. But, again, for the money, it is a great sounding receiver. The build quality seems perfectly adequate and in my particular setup it looks great. If you're looking for an everyday BT and HD radio capable receiver at an entry level price - look no further.

    Pros: Value for the price.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've owned this for about 6 months. It's been absolutely fantastic so far. It has everything I was looking for. Talking to people with the hands free is really nice and I've never had any issues with someone hearing me or me hearing them. It's really nice because I lock my cell in the glovebox and still use it if I want. The cons are all just annoying things. I would not return it or replace it because of the couple of things that I find annoying. I would definitely recommend this unit to a friend.

Pros: Good sound. Stores HD radio stations as presets and will reload them when the car is turned on. Bluetooth works great. Love the front and rear USB ports.

Cons: It doesn't charge my cell very well. It's better to say it will keep it from dying while streaming pandora. The file navigation isn't great. It will only do the folder that has the files, so if you don't have the music organized well on the USB drive it can be a pain to search. Not fun to search with a lot of folders and files. If you have a lot of phone numbers in your phone, it's not that easy to search through them either. It can be time consuming.

Had to migrate from the instructions just a bit to get the sound quality right. But with the help of tech support it sounds great. Bluetooth syncs up nicely with my iPhone and it also controls the iPof function nicely.

Pros: Bluetooth and iPod controls. HD Radio sounds great!!!! Crutchfield support!!!!!!!

Cons: Could not get it to sound right using the subwoofer connections. Used the pre-amp out instead.

I was looking to add bluetooth and HD radio to my Volvo S60. Initially I purchased the Kenwood Excelon KDC-X896 CD Receiver which on paper seemed perfect but in reality it fell short. The Kenwood was not user friendly, my wife hated the small buttons and the unit would suddenly cut out when playing CD audiobooks. I exchanged it for the JVC and couldn't be happier. The JVC's double DIN size makes everything readable, its interface is much more intuitive than the Kenwood, it pairs to my iPhone easily, finds HD radio stations with out a fuss and it sounds great! I was able to get the unit's display color to match the Volvo's and the information on the screen is succinct and easy to read. I now pull in AM sports/talk radio from Tampa, 90 miles away, that the Kenwood couldn't receive. The crutchfield harness worked well and installation was easy though wiring the second USB connector was a pain and I'm still not sure why bluetooth is not integrated in the unit, you must attach a USB device to oneof the usb inputs. The buttons on the unit are a little cheap sounding when depressed but they work fine. There are fancier looking units available but the JVC looks very good in my car and I'm veryhappy with it and the service provided by crutchfield.

Pros: Easy to use--bluetooth integration for iPhone and music streaming, accessing HD radio, AM reception, readable buttons, logical interface. Sounds great in my factory speakers, I hear things I didn't with the original unit.

Cons: Bluetooth is not integrated into the unit, you must attach bluetooth adapter to one of the usb connectors--not a big deal.

I decided to install it myself, but there is no way I could have done it without Crutchfield tech support. Although the included instructions were woefully incomplete, each of the four times I called in I got a person right away who understood exactly what my problem was. Glad I saved the money on installation. The deck sounds okay but not great. The equalizer settings are buried in menus making it hard to change settings on the fly like I could when I had three tone dials. Bluetooth connects very well although people tell me I sound distant on the phone. I have the microphone mounted at the base of the steering wheel as shown in the manual, but may try moving it up higher and see if that helps. The Pandora feature on my Android phone works flawlessly through Bluetooth, but the sound quality is noticebly worse than my iPod or a flash drive loaded with mp3's.

I purchased this to replace the crappy factory radio in my Frontier. It took me less than an hour to install and looks great in the console. I didn't give it a four for sound because my speakers stink too but that's not the radio's fault. The bluetooth wouldn't work but that because my phones' not compatible with it but I can fix that with a new phone. I am having a little trouble using some of the features but that's me and not the radio. Overall, I saved a lot of money on the radio and doing the installation myself. First of all I want to say how impressed I am with Crutchfield. I have never ordered anything from them until now, but will definitely be ordering from them in the future! Placed my order around 3:45 pm EST and it was at my doorstep at 9:30 am the next morning! Everything was as advertised, including all installation supplies. Crutchfield has a great online shopping system, that matches components with your specific car, so you have everything you need. On to the unit itself....JVC has always made a great product in my opinion and I have owned a few of their products through the years. It has been quite some time since I have been in the market for an after market head unit though. THe HD radio is great and the Bluetooth functionality is superb. Some reviews I read before purchasing had a few negative things to say, but I have yet to agree with those reviews of the product, with one exception. That exception, is the illumination is a bit on the dull side, but not horrible. I do like the fact that I can change the key backlighting and display independently. Over all, installation was a snap and I was able to complete it in about 2 hours. I am very happy with the sound quality and the functionality of the unit. Learning the controls and menus was not as bad as some opinions state and I did not feel that the main control knob was too sensitive. This is a great after market Bluetooth unit for someone who doesn't have a newer car. You won't be disappointed!

Pros: Crutchfield ordering, shipping and service in a word....AWESOME! Easy installation, good instructions and diagrams. Excellent sound quality - actually improved the sound of my stock speakers a lot! Bluetooth functionality. HD Radio rocks! Build quality

Cons: Backlighting - not as bright as it could be during the daylight hours, but still readable. This may present more of a problem with those whose head unit sits high on the dash, like in many SUV's. Nothing else really. This is a great unit.
