JVC KW-NT810HDT Navigation receiver

A 2013 CEA Innovations Award winner and JVC's best navigation receiver

Even the luckiest of road warriors finds themselves lost or stuck in traffic from time to time. JVC's KW-NT810HDT navigation receiver helps you avoid potential road hazards with intuitive guidance and rapid traffic updates that'll keep you ahead of congestion. And with a big, motorized 7" display leading the way, you'll be able to enjoy more than just helpful directions — you can pull up great-sounding HD Radio™ broadcasts, make and receive hands-free calls through your Bluetooth phone, and control select smartphone apps and functions on the go.

Rapid traffic reports and beyond

The dedicated traffic tuner lets you dial into the free Total Traffic Plus HD network — you'll enjoy access to real-time traffic info that'll help you steer clear of congestion. Other traffic info services only work in major metropolitan areas, but Total Traffic Plus HD works anywhere a station is broadcasting HD Radio traffic information — over 90 metro areas and counting. You'll also get sports, weather, entertainment, and news information onscreen if you want. And the new HD Radio Active Alerts feature shows you federal government alerts in text form on the navigation screen to warn you of severe weather or other emergencies in your area.

With the help of an iPhone® app, you can keep up with traffic even when you're outside HD Radio range. The app will automatically switch to the Total Traffic Network over cellular signals when it determines you're no longer receiving HD Radio signals.

Take charge of your smartphone

The KW-NT810HDT gives you varying degrees of functionality with different types of smartphones and connections. Here are some key examples:

  • iPhone with USB connection: iHeartRadio app control; Pandora® Internet radio app control; iPod control (audio only)
  • iPhone with JVC's iPod Audio/Video cable connection: all the above plus iPod video control (when parked) and audio from iPhone apps when receiver is in External Mode (these features not available for the iPhone 5)
  • Android™ with USB connection: music playback from your phone's SD card or internal memory
  • Android with Bluetooth connection: iHeartRadio app control; Pandora Internet radio app control; streaming music playback from your phone's internal memory or streaming music apps
  • BlackBerry® with USB connection: music playback from your phone's SD card or internal memory
  • BlackBerry with Bluetooth connection: Pandora Internet radio app control; streaming music playback from your phone's internal memory or streaming music apps

NaviBridge gives you easy GPS transfer from your devices

The free NaviBridge app lets you search for points of interest on your smartphone or tablet, then transfer the GPS coordinates right to the JVC KW-NT810HDT for turn-by-turn directions. If you're using an iPhone, you'll need to be connected via USB to use NaviBridge. Android users can take advantage of NaviBridge through Bluetooth.

Easy-to-follow navigation

The 7" touch display features two-way motorized tilt, so you can position it just the way you want it. You'll have access to detailed maps of the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico, plus 8 million searchable points of interest. You'll hear actual road names at upcoming maneuvers with text-to-speech voice prompts. Junction View shows you a realistic depiction of an upcoming exit, complete with lane guides. The Picture-In-Picture view lets you see an overview of the action, plus a close-up detail. And 3D Landmarks shows you skyscrapers, statues, and other familiar structures in color to help you find your way through unfamiliar urban areas.

Room to expand

If you want to send video to a backseat or overhead monitor, you can use the RCA rear video output to keep your passengers entertained. And a dedicated rear-view camera input makes it easy to add nearly any universal camera to your vehicle for safety when backing up.

Want to keep your steering wheel controls?

In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this JVC stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the KW-NT810HDT, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

    You will regret buying JVC

Dabitz from New Jersey on 10/9/2014

If you purchase a JVC head unit don't expect any updates. My unit KW-NT50HDT has not received any firmware updates (which it needs badly) for three years since Sept 2011, and maps have not been updated since Dec 2012. For this only reason you should stay away from JVC. It's become so inaccurate that I don't even bother using its navigation anymore.

    Pros: Affordable

    Cons: No updates at all!

Put Simply this radio is Jurassic in technology years! This model has been out for about three years and you have to believe that because of the merger with Kenwood that JVC is going to die a slow and painful death. I had their last great Navigation radio which was the NT3HDT and the one after that was a little bit better with the U/I. It's one I wish I still had. Anyhow, There is a good possibility that after this year you won't see anymore Navigation units from JVC because if they had any interest in it they would have already replaced this museum piece for 2014. I've liked JVC in the past and I can only hope that a change happens and soon! So for right now avoid this like the plague. I highly recommend Kenwood's DNX891HD. A litle bit pricey but you get what you pay for.

    2013 Chevrolet Avalanche
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

There are better products out there than this device. Do not buy this. Navigation is awful. I suppose I've been spoiled by being a long time TomTom user, but the Navteq is the worst GPS package I've ever seen. Very difficult to use. It is missing hundreds of POI's that one would expect to see, like hospitals, major government offices, McDonald's, etc. The list goes on and on. The volume of the navigation voice cannot be lowered to a reasonable speaking level as compared to stereo audio. When on thespeakerphone phone and navigating, the phone is unusable. The navigation audio completely drowns out the phone audio. I love the audio options and I don't believe there is any product with more. Sound is spectacular.

Pros: Great audio. Wonderful features. Probably the most complete car stereo on the market today.

Cons: Navigation is awful. There is no way to direct tune to a distant radio station.

    Awesome list of features

Clemson EE from Atlanta, GA on 4/15/2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The JVC receiver has the most features of any one I reviewed. Installation was very straightforward. My only mis-step came when I did not connect the Power Antenna and External Amp leads on the wiring harness. My Mazda Miata did not have a power antenna, and I was not hooking up an external amp, just using the one in the receiver so I left those leads taped. Hooked everything up, and no sound. I called Crutchfield Help. They diagnosed problem within a couple of minutes. Must happen to a lot of people. My Miata had the Bose Stereo originally, so it DID have an external Amp near each speaker. I had to connect the external amp lead for those to work. There is also a signal booster for the OEM antenna, so the antenna lead had to be connected. Once I got all those connections done, everything worked great. I think that this issue should be mentioned in the installation notes. Overall- excellent sound, with loads of modification ability. GPS works well, I live in a big city so the live traffic over the HD-Radio signal is an unexpected bonus. DVD player is too sensitive for a mobile unit. Minor road bumps cause skips in music CD playback. I really like the SD Card slot; put 32GB of music on one for nearly endless music. The IPod controller works well thru the USB port. The Bluetooth phone and music also works well. HD Radio sounds as good as a CD.

Pros: Tremendous list of features. Almost endless options for music playback- CD, IPod, SD Card, XM, HD Radio, Pandora, Bluetooth GPS Features

Cons: CD Player too sensitive. Big feature list, but it should be for the price of this unit.

Happy with my new JVC GPS/NAV from FREDERICKSBURG, TEXAS on 4/12/2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So far so good, great looking unit, has features that I don't know if I'll ever use. Installed easy, a very bright screen, I like the clean "knobless" front. We'll see how the practical daily use goes... Two "cons", it appears that you can't upload icons for display, i.e. the Porsche crest. Also the head unit wouldn't support the factory speakers so we had to install a new 4 channel amplifier. However my guy told me that this is typical of all after market head units.

Pros: Great screen, to new to give any information on the functions, albeit is looks like it does everything, less washing the dishes.

Cons: Can't upload personal screen icons. Needed a new 4 channel amplifier to support the factory speakers.

    Fast but lacking

    2008 Subaru Legacy
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

System is very fast. You push a button and it reacts, there is no lag. If you scroll the map or miss a turn the recalculation is instant. The audio controls are fantastic and intuitive. However, the system is lacking many features I expect from a flagship unit. 1. If you use a SD Card or USB drive you can only list to the music you have in a folder. Meaning that if you store your music like Artist>>CD>>Song you can only listen to a single album at a time. There is no randomizing across albums or artists. NO PLAYLISTS! If you want this functionality you MUST use a iPod. iPod control is flawless however. 2. Maps in the unit are old. 3. The traffic data is not taken into account when planning your route. Only after you start driving. For example, if I plot a course home from work it says the 16.6 miles will take 40 minutes. You start moving and it drops to 24 minutes. Then if there are traffic disruptions it recalculates to 30. Therefore, you have no guidance of what route to take to miss the traffic until you have already locked it in. It will reroute you quickly however to miss the traffic. 4. No voice dialing. No voice control. 5. There is no way to search for POIs along your route. 6. There is no way to see a list of the roads/turns on your route! 7. No highway POI exit information. Some units say that at exit 940 you can find a restaurant, toilet, etc. I do not think I'd buy again. 3 stars for audio and speed. 2.5 stars if I could as half of the unit (nav) is poor

Pros: FAST! Screen is nice and resists fingerprints Great sound functions and customization (EQ settings) iPod controls are nice and work well HD Radio works well and picks up weak stations well Bluetooth phone calls sound good on both ends Lane guidance seems to work well Traffic re-routing seems rather intelligent and does save you time NaviBridge software (software says it uses Google but never finds what Google does - kinda disappointed in this feature. The Kenwood/Garmin combo works bette

Cons: The navigation...all of it. It's fast but is is so feature poor it isn't funny. No route review, no POIs along route, traffic not taken into account when plotting routes, no exit information, speed limit feature barely works and only on major freeways (sometimes). The POI search is strange as you cannot put spaces in names...doesn't seem to matter but is strange. The mass storage functions are lacking. Plan on buying an iPod if you want playlists or listen randomly to all of your songs.

Amazing Sound in Amazing Overal Package!

nySQ from NY, NY on 10/11/2013

I've been doing my own car stereo on my own for some time now. I'm big into sound quality. CDT component speakers, Alpine V12 amps, all Monster Cable with offset for power/speaker/signal cables. This thing plays ANYTHING! Exactly as advertised - all file types from audio to video, pictures, etc. This was the main reason I got it, and I have zero regrets. Crisp touch response. This thing is a multi-tasking master! You can easily flip between various functions and it loves to quickly and effortlessly allow you to work any type of audio function while you're using navigation. Just amazing and totally satisfying to use! I was concerned the 2.5V preout to the amps would leave something to be desired - the sound is crystal! Once I've experienced unit freezing on me - possibly a bad MP3 issue. Had to pull over and turn off car. I've owned unit for >1yr - never ever happened again. GPS functionality not super accurate - I've noticed some streets not always up-to-date. I just need a general guide through an area. Not a reason to deduct stars in my book as GPS searches are quick and voice volume easily adjustable. AMAZING ability to tailor your sound! 13(!) band EQ, sound level adjustments, car adaptation, space volumization - AMAZING to an audiophile's ears! I don't use iPhone/iPod, but all USBs up to 32GB quickly, easily read, accessed. Just buy it, install, and enjoy!

    Pros: Amazing sound.

Cons: None I can think of after 1 year of use.

    Had Problems...

MidTex from Midland, TX on 10/8/2013

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit has a lot going for it but there are intermittent issues that caused me to return it. I agree with BillB that the firmware appears to be glitchy. When in iPod mode, the artist and album name will appear and disappear at random although the song name and artwork remains. Several times the backup camera displayed a black screen and my SiriusXM tuner was not detected even though I know it is fine. I find the user interface easy to use and the sound quality is great.

Pros: Great sound quality and feature set. Fast navigation screens. Nice looking screens although the map resolution seems lower than the Alpine.

Cons: Glitchy iPod interface and camera display.

    2003 Chevrolet Avalanche
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I put this in a 2003 Chevy Avalanche just today. It originally had the 6-disc changer with BOSE system. You will need the interface module to make it work with the BOSE and the steering control module so your steering wheel controls will work. I followed all the directions, soldered all the wires, connected it up in the truck and whew!! It all works just as it should. All the features are there, all the little things like dimming when lights come on, rear view camera displays when you put in reverse, the chimes, dings, and gps. It all works just fine with the original BOSE system. With the two modules which came with partially prewired connectors it basically took me an afternoon to put it in. About 5 hours from start to finish. It really is a perfect fit, almost too perfect, but very tight in the space and very secure with the supplied brackets. All the iphone features work flawlessly. Good choice indeed.

Pros: Good documentation, all wiring charts and diagrams fully explained. Integrates with iphone seamlessly. GPS just work like it should.

Cons: I guess most built in GPS won't let you change the route when in motion. This is the about the only con I can think of.

Hands down great unit. Sound is great and easy to customize. Wish more controls were available during movement. Cant switch between different functions while in motion, this should be disabled at users discretion.

    Pros: Excellent sound and controls.

Cons: Cant change anything once vehicle is in motion

Very nice navigation with built-in traffic

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently bought this JVC NT810HDT because I was looking for a navigation model with built-in digital traffic. I checked out all the options and was deliberating between industry known Alpine and Kenwood, but finally decided for the JVC flagship model because it also includes weather, news, sports updates, all for free lifetime. This model also has great integration with several apps, like iHeartradio. I also like that is comes with HD Radio, pulling in my local Philly stations in crystal quality, giving me access to as many as 20+ new digital channels. I love the WRTI HD2 jazz channel during the daytime. A bit pricey, but given all the features it packs, I would recommend this units, eyes closed.

Pros: Nice navigation software. Fast, responsive. Beautiful display. Great content: HD Radio, iHeartradio, news, sports, weather (no subscription required).

Cons: A little pricey but well worth it with all the features it packs.

    Has Potential

Jason from Winsted, CT on 7/7/2013

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Could be top notch with a few tweaks, and it might be perfect for some people. The sound is great and the display is fast. Plenty of ins/outs, and some well thought out GPS options (ability to populate the map with POI's of your choosing and not show the rest). Ultimately, I returned for a Kenwood DNX890 because I travel for work and needed the best GPS...and this wasn't it. In short, the route display was more jagged and distracting than my Garmin, most functions are disabled while driving, the route calculations were off from my Garmin (up to 45 minutes difference in a 60 mile trip - I might have had a dud unit here, but tech support couldn't confirm), there is no road exclusion feature (useful for commercial vehicles or towing trailers on restricted roads), and it is unclear how up to date the maps will be (you have to pay for Garmin updates, but at least you know it will be supported down the road). I am almost totally happy with the swap. The only drawback to the Kenwood that I have found is that the JVC is MUCH more responsive to the touch screen (well done JVC). If you are only mildly interested in the GPS, this would probably be a 4 or 5-star product for you. If you rely on GPS for business, be cautious and try it on the road before you make the final decision. See pros/cons below. By the way, the manual says JVC/Kenwood, so I am assuming they are owned by the same parent company, but the two models are very different in looks and interface.

Pros: Very responsive display - I returned this for the Kenwood 890DNX, and the Kenwood is "laggy" compared to the JVC. 13 band eq does a nice job of improving stock stereo (Bose system in 2005 Suburban) speakers/amps, usb input let's you connect a hub and up to four thumb drives - awesome feature. Ability to select specific points of interest (friend's house) or general category (Starbucks for example) and ONLY show those on the map...less clutter is better in my opinion.

Cons: GPS software is the major drawback in my case. There is no road exclusion (for example, if you are towing a trailer and can't take a specific road). Just about every function is locked while driving (3mph) - I get the potential safety issue, but this means your passenger can't work the functions while in route either. I suppose you could disable this when you wire the unit, but I never tried. Also, when run side/side with my Garmin, the route calculations were way off...maybe I had a dud.

    Very Disappointed

    2007 Ford F-150
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Had very high hopes for this, but am very disappointed with it. After about 7 hours installing the unit with Sirius/XM, iPod, etc., found the end result to be very frustrating. To be clear, the display is beautiful and intuitive to use, but the firmware is VERY GLITCHY, with elements appearing and disappearing at random (i.e., such as channel selections, menu items, etc.). I downloaded and installed the latest firmware from JVC (pretty straight-forward process), but that only corrected about 60% of the glitches. I expect that future updates will help clear up some of the rest, but for this price, one would expect to have a unit that is fully-functioning now. The biggest issue for me, however, is that YOU CANNOT ACCESS ANY GPS FUNCTIONS while the vehicle is moving. (except your "home" button). That is, you can't program in a new address... you can't bring up POIs... you can't change your route options, etc., unless you first stop your vehicle. That means if you are driving on the turnpike and want to find the nearest restaurant, you need to exit (pay the toll), stop the vehicle, and then do a search for restaurant, before proceeding. I get the potential safety issues this is trying to address - but c'mon, my $70 suction cup mount TomTom will let me easily, quickly and safely do these things without having to stop the vehicle, but this system locks me out unless I am stopped! This, regrettably, is going back, and I'll stay with my little portable GPS.

    Pros: Beautiful well-laid out display.

Cons: GPS use requires you to stop your vehicle to enter or access any destination, POI, etc. Firmware still too glitchy.

    Good Product

DWP from North Carolina on 4/9/2013

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am very pleased with the quality of the audio and bluetooth operations of this unit. The sound quality is much better than what I had with my factory unit. The backup camera is awesome. The quality of the picture and the area visible is amazing. My only disappointment with the unit is the graphics on the navigation system. I actually went to a local store to see this unit before I purchased, and was amazed at the graphics. It was just as it was pictured in the Crutchfield ads and in the Users manual. However, once installed, I do not have that quality of graphics. Where all examples show representations of grass, the lanes of the roads, buildings, etc. I have only little pencil like lines, and surrounding white areas. I have talked with Crutchfield support and talked directly to JVC and have been told that I live in an area too small for the unit to make these types of recognition or that the service that provides those images is not available where I live. If that is the case and these images may not come through on all units, some type of mention should be made in the advertisement for this unit to indicate that the images may not match what is in the promotions. I still fine it hard to accept that reasoning as the store where I viewed the unit is only 3 miles from my home and there unit had the better graphics.

SiriusXM Ready via Firmware Update: The KW-NT810HDT is compatible with SiriusXM's SXV200 tuner (220SXV200, sold separately) through a firmware update from JVC.

    Audio Section

24 Bit D/A Converter: The JVC KW-NT810HDT utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The KW-NT810HDT is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the KW-NT810HDT are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the KW-NT810HDT are as follows:

    • CEA2006 Specs: 20 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (200 total watts)

Amplifier Gain Control: When you are using the KW-NT810HDT with factory speakers (or those rated to less than 50 watts peak), the Amplifier Gain Control can limit the amount of power being sent to those speakers. When the Amp Gain Control is set to low, the volume control ranges from 0 (minimum) to 30 (maximum). When using speakers rated higher than 50 watts peak, you can set the Amp Gain Control to high, and the volume control will range from 0 to 50. The internal amp can also be turned off when all the speakers are powered by outboard amplifiers.

Volume Adjust: The input level of each source (other than FM) is adjustable relative to the FM radio volume, so there isn't a significant volume difference when changing sources. Each source is individually adjustable from -5 to +5.

2.5V/6CH Preamp Output: The KW-NT810HDT is equipped with three pair of 2.5V preamp outputs (Front/Rear/Subwoofer). The front & rear preamp outputs offer balance/fade control and are designed to hookup to a full-range 4-channel amplifier. The subwoofer preamp output is non-fading and designed to hookup to a mono-block subwoofer amplifier. You can adjust the head unit's subwoofer level between -50 and +10.

Digital Crossover Network: The KW-NT810HDT features a variable high pass crossover for the front & rear speakers, as well as a low pass crossover for the subwoofer.

    • Front: Frequency (Through, 30/40/50/60/70/80/90/100/120/150/180/220/250Hz), Slope (-6/-12/-18/-24dB), Gain (-8 to 0dB), Tweeter Level (-8 to 0dB)
    • Rear: Frequency (Through, 30/40/50/60/70/80/90/100/120/150/180/220/250Hz), Slope (-6/-12/-18/-24dB), Gain (-8 to 0dB)
    • Subwoofer: Frequency (Through, 30/40/50/60/70/80/90/100/120/150/180/220/250Hz), Slope (-6/-12/-18/-24dB), Gain (-8 to 0dB), Phase (Normal/Reverse)

      • Bass Boost: four-step Bass Boost (Off/1/2/3) to enhance your music's lower frequencies
    • Compressed Music Enhancers: The head unit offers several audio adjustments dedicated to enhance the sound quality of your compressed digital music.
      • Audio Contrast: sharpens vague sound to make the audio more realistic; effective for compressed music data
      • D.T. Expander (Digital Track Expander): reproduces the natural sound of digital audio sources by restoring data that was lost and waves that were changed during audio compression to their original states; effective for compressed music data
    • Driver Sound Improvements: The KW-NT810HDT features various audio settings to help improve your driving and audio experience.
      • Start Up Sound Level: starts the head unit with a volume lower than when the system was turned off; you can then manually turn it up back to the previous level
      • Road Noise Compensation: increases the volume of little sound that can be easily washed out by road noise and boosts the bass
      • Adaptive Volume: automatically increases the volume level (both for Navigation and audio/video) as the car speeds up; you must connect the unit's Speed Signal wire (pink/gray) to your vehicle's speed sensor wire
      • Reverse Audio Reduction: attenuates the receiver's AV sound when you shift your vehicle into reverse, so you can concentrate more on backing up your vehicle safely

Dynamic Range Compression: The dynamic range can be adjusted by selecting either Normal, Wide or Dialog. Dialog makes the total sound volume become larger as compared with Wide and Normal, allowing you to listen to the movie's dialogue more clearly. This is effective only on Dolby Digital software.

Key Beep: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

    AV Connections
