Have JVC, will travel

JVC's KW-NSX1 DVD receiver offers all the cool features you'd expect in a multimedia receiver: a sharp-looking 6.1" touchscreen, hands-free calling, audio streaming, variable color illumination, and comprehensive tone controls. And it's designed to work with a wide variety of smartphones, from audio playback with an iPhone® 5 to extensive control over select Android phones through MirrorLink™.

Outstanding iPhone® app control

With your iPhone connected via JVC's KS-U30 cable, you can view and control a wide variety of apps on the KW-NSX1's screen through JVC's App mode (app control requires Lightning to 30-pin adapter with iPhone 5). You'll get basic control over audio apps like Rhapsody and Tunein Radio for simple functions like play/pause or track up/down, plus the ability to view streaming video from sources like Netflix and YouTube when the car is parked.

JVC's App Link mode (not available with iPhone 5) lets you view traffic info from Inrix, Cobra iRadar other driving apps when your iPhone's connected. For powerful navigation, download the MotionX-GPS Drive app (subscription required) and you'll be able to see maps and live traffic reports on the receiver's screen. You'll still need to access your iPhone, however, so consider adding an iPhone mount, for easy use.

MirrorLink offers outstanding integration with select smartphones

If your smartphone is a big part of your life, it's only natural that you'd want to tap into it when you're on the road. JVC's KW-NSX1 DVD receiver works with the MirrorLink system to provide unparalled in-dash control over an ever-growing list of smartphones, including the popular Samsung Galaxy S III and Nokia Symbian models. With MirrorLink, you'll enjoy touchscreen control over your music, phone contacts, and select apps — a seamless experience.

MirrorLink offers outstanding integration with select smartphones.

What will I need for MirrorLink?

MirrorLink needs three elements to do its thing: a compatible receiver like the KW-NSX1, a compatible smartphone, and an app that works with MirrorLink. The system works like this:

  • Download the app (prices vary) to your compatible phone. This lets the phone enter "car mode," which provides a simplified graphical interface that's ideal for use in the car, as it's easy to see at a glance, and much easier to use.
  • Connect your phone to the receiver using the receiver's USB input and your phone's USB cable.
  • Launch the app on your phone, and tap the MirrorLink icon in the receiver's source menu. The optimized car mode menu will appear on your receiver's screen.

A full-fledged multimedia receiver

The KW-NSX1 also offers DVD, CD, and USB  playback, including support for MP3s, WMA, and WAV files. And you can enjoy video content on the screen when you're parked, or send video to rear seat screens when you're taking long road trips with the family. JVC makes it easy for you to take your Pandora® Internet radio stations on the road. Just plug in your iPhone and you'll have touchscreen control over Pandora right in your dash.

Speaking of Bluetooth

This receiver lets you enjoy the safety and convenience of hands-free calling with almost any Bluetooth phone. And you can stream audio from your device to the receiver as well, for a wireless, tangle-free connection whenever you get in the car.

Great for the rest of your music

Once you plug your iPod or iPhone into the USB input, you can tap your way through all your tunes and playlist on this JVC's responsive touchscreen. If you're not an iPod user, you can load up a USB drive or a recordable disc with digital files — it's easy to fit hundreds of tracks on either one, and you can still dive in using the touchscreen.

Want to keep your steering wheel controls?

In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this JVC stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the JVC, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

    Used to work well

mikeG from New York on 4/13/2015

Initially this product worked great with the verizon S3. When the verizon S3 firmware got updated sometime in september 2013 the unit stopped working as it was suppose to and would crash every time the drive link app started and was plugged in for mirroring. There was eventually a firmware update for the smartphone adapter inside and the phone still did not work for screen mirroring. Essentially the whole entire time I owned this it did not work as it was it was advertised. The bluetooth worked ok with it but now that it is 2015 I no longer have a S3 and have upgrade to the S5. This makes the product almost obsolete. However it still claims to have the mirror link technology. I have not yet tested my S5 with it but since but the last time I tried it still would not connect and am unable to install Drive Link for the s5. Frequent emails to Mirrorlink, JVC, Drive link app developers, and Crutchfield have yielded no helpful responses if any at all. In fact Crutchfield was the only one who actually emailed back with any sort of response wanting to help. If anyone would let me know if this product will at least eventually support any new phone properly that would be great. If not I am going to replace it as it has not lived up to its hype.

Pros: Easy to set up Has bluetooth

Cons: FM/AM radio GUI is awful

Very nice head unit for the clearance price. The mirrorlink is not very good, and a pain in the butt to install because of the size of the box. Overall its a great head unit though.

It is not compatible with the Iphone 5, therefore the use is limited for music and hand free calling, the software has some bugs yet to fix

    Pros: Sound,

Cons: can not use apps with the iphone 5, icons within the functions are so small that is very difficult to operate while driving

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Screen size good, but in retrospect, will look for 7" size screen next time since I have Note2 phone & much bigger screen would be nice. Sound improved through stock Bose speakers & good visuals on sound shaping features. Installed relay to play DVDs while moving (easy & cheap fix). Rear view camera is viewable w/o putting car in reverse. Smartphone adaptor in a separate module makes for extra work, but for mirror link feature, worth the effort. There is a feature to customize the wallpaper; haven't done it yet, but good to have. Even though this model is discontinued, JVC has same thing available

    Pros: Feature packed, good design

Cons: Lots of connections in back. Be ready to stuff into typical tight spaces behind receiver.

    Excellent value!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very nice head unit. Installation was a breeze in my 2002 Accord coupe. The smartphone control module mounted well in my glove box for easy access if an update should be necessary and Crutchfield shipped everything else I needed to complete the installation. The Samsung drivelink application was not compatible with my Galaxy S3 running Android 4.3 and would crash every time it would connect to the HU but the modded Drivelink application found on XDA works great and provided full mirroring capability. Even with the stock speakers the sound if far superior to the stock HU and I found the UI very easy to navigate. Blue tooth works excellent just don't forget to plug in the external microphone that ships with the unit and make sure to find an acceptable place to mount it to minimize road noise. I have not connected an iPod to the deck yet so I cannot comment much on the apple compatibility, but if you want to view video make sure you purchase the KS-U30 AV cable which is sold separately. Unlike other reviewers that have commented my radio signal is superb, during installation my antenna jack wiggled loose and after mounting the unit I had to fully seat the antenna, after that no problems with my signal. I have yet to hear the fan in the unit, I am guessing if it is starving for air in a particular install it would crank up and become louder. Overall this unit is a tremendous value for the money and I couldn't be happier! Thank you Crutchfield!

Pros: Excellent value for the money Lots of features, great sound quality

Cons: No remote is included the JVC RM-RK252P must be purchased separately. iPod AV cable is not included Drivelink still in its infancy

Excellent Radio, especially when using an Android phone with Mirror Link. Able to use the functions on the phone directly onto the Head unit.

Pros: Excellent features such as Mirror Link for android phones- works great with Samsung G3

Cons: Needed to place the control box (for mirrolink) in another location- not a problem, enough wires and connections, but took some extra time to complete.

    This Works with Galaxy S4

Parham from New Jersey on 12/12/2013

Iphone 5 At first I had an issue with my wife's Iphone 5 not working via USB as the sound was not coming out. I just wanted the Pandora app working which after changing from IPOD to AV IN it worked (Thanks Crutchfield Tech Support). I did have to reset the Head Unit by pushing the pin hole under the volume nob so I could set up the radio again as AV IN was greyed out and would not let me change it from IPOD mode. Please note that without the Iphone cable you will not be able to send video to the head unit but you will get you album art and pandora fully working. Android Mirrorlink Next I needed to get the Applink to work. I installed Auron Full Mirroring Applink and did not have to root my phone ( It worked no problems only video via my phone to mirrorlink is slow on the head unit but thats why it has a dvd player. Just remember that you have to click on mirrorlink on the head unit then plug in your Android phone via the micro usb cable for it to work. I did not even try the samsung applink app but that would have probably worked as well but not full mirroring. The sound quality This sounds great after adjusting the equalizer to my liking.

Pros: Lots of features and I love using Waze, Sound Quality, Build Quality and great price.

Cons: Bluetooth streaming sometimes gets choppy, video playback via your phone is slow.

Mirror link doesn't work at all. Samsungs drive link app is garbage, and the hacked one still wont allow this headunit to recognize my phone. And the sound from the internal amplifier is garbage, anything at or above a below reasonable level is horribly distorted. Thankfully Crutchfield was excellent about returning it, it only took a minute to complete the phone call for return auth. I am buying a pioneer.

    Pros: Well built

Cons: Garbage sound quality. Doesnt work with android. Horrible gui.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Works horrible with iPhone 5. Adapters are a cheap pain for such a loss of functionality and it is constantly coming unplugged. All of the touch panel buttons are positioned in the most painful way. Example, tp and eq buttons are tiny, on the edge of the screen, good luck not hitting them or a giant source button (switching sources, stopping video kids now screaming) pandora: who puts the tiny "like" button right above the tiny skip track button and there is open screen space? Again, good luck getting the right tiny button picked. It does sound good. Just can't get over the button layout thing. And yes I calibrated it a dozen times. They work, just to hard to hit and not other stuff also.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

first off, Crutchfield support was probably the best I've ever had when ordering this. installed in my '03 Ranger with little modification, which Crutchfield supplied instructions for and all the mounting hardware needed. No, I've tried it out for a few months to get a true feel for it. bluetooth works fine, radio works fine, but the drive link (mirror link) does not work with my galaxy S4 so now this radio which I bought is already outdated and is the only thing I'm displeased about.

Pros: sound quality, bluetooth, touchscreen, response time.

Cons: drive link does not work with any other samsung phone other than S3. won't work with my S4 which is the main reason I bought this smart phone adapter box is just very inconvenient, now its outdated and the newer models of the nsx don't even require one. wish the onscreen buttons were a bit bigger.

    good investment

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed the JVC KW-NSX1 with not too many problems. Crutchfield support is pretty awesome. They answered my simple questions quickly. As for the JVC receiver, it works. There isn't too much exciting about it. The bluetooth works seemlessly though I do get some clicks/static often. The MirrorLink worked with my Samsung S3 with little fuss. However, again it is nothing to right home about. All in all this JVC is an okay receiver. I'd probably pick a different receiver if I had it to do all over again.

Pros: All the features work and the sounds quality is definitely better than the factory radio.

Cons: While on bluetooth there is frequent clicks/static. The Mirrorlink is unexciting and a bit of a pain to maneuver through. Maneuvering through the menu is not easy with big fingers.

    Very good, with one exception

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm fairly well pleased with this piece of equipment. The interface is easy to use. The installation was pretty easy, even for a neophyte like me. Just one complaint, which pertains to the way in which the unit displays radio presets. Rather than showing the call letters or frequency, the unit shows the last couple words that scrolled from each station (artist and/or song title). This seems especially stupid to me. Presets ought to identify the station, rather than showing useless info from the last time the station was accessed.

    Pros: See above

    Cons: See above

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a VERY nice unit with ALOT of features ! installation was a little more advanced , but if you follow directions its pretty straight forward . I have installed many car stereos and this one was the most complex by far . Let me say here , I added a 4 channel Alpine amp to drive the front and rear speakers , so that added a little more wiring to the project . i also added a 2 channel Rockford Fosgate am to drive 2 Audiobahn 12" subs , with also added more wiring . nothing to complex , just standard hook ups . If you are just replacing the factory unit in your car , its a VERY easy hook up . The Mirrorlink is an easy connect also , however it doesnt "mirror" my phone . I am upgrading my phone soon , so that isnt a big deal . The bluetooth woorks great ! all , features on this unit work extremely well and I was REALLY surprised at the video quality and sound quality from this unit as i have only had Alpine head units in the past .

Pros: everything works better than expected , VERY nice video and audio quality . Very simple to operate . i would definately recomend this unit to anyone looking to upgrade their factoy head unit .

Cons: the instruction manual is VERY vague . if you havent installed a car stereo before , you may have a hard time following the install directions . The "mirrorlink" don't work with my phone , do your research to find out if your phone is compatable .

    decent unit

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First off, this is my first JVC head unit. In previous years I ALWAYS avoided them due to past experiences. With that said, they seem to be a much better product now. Fair amount of audio settings, and sounds good. Great variety of audio sources, etc. One thing, that I noticed was mentioned in an early review, the radio reception isn't that good. Granted I don't listen to the radio, if I did, I would be very upset with the price paid for the unit. Aside from that. Well worth the sale price and then some.

Pros: Nice sound Many audio sources 4v pre amps Clean look Many features

Cons: Radio reception Glare on screen in the sun Mirrorlink is a bit of a pain CD's take a while to load

Come for the unit, stay for the customer service

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I will be taking a 22 hour drive alone with my two kids next month. I wanted something that will be easy to see my GPS and something to provide entertainment for the kids. (I have a Hyundai Accent 2012 and there is nowhere good to mount my phone). That being said, the main attractions for me: DVD player, Bluetooth, CD player, radio, touch screen, Android integration. I don't really care about sound quality or a rear view backup camera, those are just plusses in my book. The unit itself is fairly simple to install. The smart phone adaptor was a pain in the butt. But Crutchfield tech support is WONDERFUL... If you bought this unit anywhere else, you would be SOL. Crutchfield will talk you through it until it's installed correct. The unit has AMAZING sound. The picture quality is OK, but if i wanted top-of-the-line I would have spent at least twice as much. The tuner module is ok ... I only get three local stations (I live about 30 miles from NYC and can't get any of those stations) and the interface is a little confusing. I suppose I could get an antenna boost, but if you love to listen to the radio be forewarned before you buy this unit. Listen to what other reviewers are saying about the hacked version of Drivelink (look it up on Youtube as Drivelink full mirroring). Also keep in mind that you WILL have to do an update to the smartphone adaptor with an SD card. Overall, good value for the price, excellent customer service from Crutchfield.

Pros: Looks amazing, sound quality is excellent, has all the "bells and whistles", great value

Cons: Radio signal is WEAK... Can only get two local stations, Mirrorlink is almost useless (unless you have the hack version), smart phone adapter is hard to install.

First the stereo is great, has nice sound and links with my phone right away. I have a Galaxy S4 and the market app Drivelink will not work with it, but if you search the internet you will find the app that has been fixed by an individual and once I installed that the mirrorlink works great. So for those people who haven't been able to use the mirrorlink the solution is out there. But I give a thumbs up for Crutchfield getting my stereo to me in timely manner and great customer support with help on questions I had while installing my stereo. No one has complained when I use the speaker phone so all good there. I have not tried the usb cord not need when I have my phone with everything on it.

Pros: Looks nice in my car. Has great sound and features. When you turn off the car while you have been listening to music through bluetooth and then get back in it automatically syncs with your phone and starts playing the music from your phone where you left off

Cons: Mirrorlink will not work with most android phones, which has nothing to do with the stereo but the software and with a little research you can find the app Drivelink on the internet that has all the kinks worked out it. You can't use the stereo main components while hooked in with Mirrorlink but I am not interested in listening to a radio station when I can listen to the music in my collections and still have a full size and up to date gps

Ease of use is ok at best. When hooked up to your phone in drive link, after you add apps on the phone in drive link app they do not show up on the radio face to use. The antenna does not have a strong signal and when traveling only the closest local stations come in, mainly the religious and talk radio.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great unit, looks good and sounds good. Audio is awesome and adjustable and this is with my factory speakers still in. The Bluetooth works fantastic, both with playing music from my phone as well as making calls, the call quality is good and I haven't heard any complaints on the other end. The DVD player works and sounds great as well. The only thing I'm less than impressed with is the MirrorLink feature. I have the Samsung Galaxy Note 2, and it will connect easily with the micro-usb cable. However, if you're looking for something with more functionality with your phone and the ability for full mirroring I would look at some of the higher-end units. This MirrorLink allows you make calls with your phone book, use your gps and nav. system, and play your phone's music just like you would with Bluetooth. Overall I've been very pleased and for a double din touchscreen unit for this price I think it's about as good as it gets.

Pros: Sound quality is good, easy to use bluetooth and make calls

Cons: Full mirroring is not what I expected.

This unit sounds great with an easily tweakable EQ feature. Paired with the right speakers (RMS around 20 watts) the on board amp packs a nice punch with plenty of head room to add an amplified sub to the mix. The display looks great and DVD video reproduction is clean and sharp.

I love this unit. MirrorLink works well; however you have to disable Bluetooth on the unit. I have issues with app but I hope it will improve soon. The only complaint is the USB on the unit is shady. You have to use the right flash drive for it to work properly..not plug and play as I would have liked. Looks good, easy to use, DVD works great. Customizable to a point. Would like to be able to add my car logo on the startup screen. Backup camera works great, the harness and dash kit worked well. I plan to purchase again for another vehicle. Shipping was quick and Crutchfield was great (as usual!).

    Pros: Easy to use

Cons: Shady USB and JVC should add the firmware to work with any phone via the USB connection.

Crutchfield delivered the unit quickly and it arrived sooner than expected. Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The MirrorLink feature is weak and only supports 2 Android phones. You need a large separate module that comes with the head unit in order for it to use Mirrorlink. On calls, the head unit has NO ability to mute a call. The only way to mute is to use your phone's mute feature. Audio - sounds great. Bluetooth audio is awesome. Pandora only works with iphone/ipod. So if you are an Android user like 80% of us are, you are out of luck. You need to use Pandora on the phone. So that feature is out. Installation in a Jeep JK series was a major pain. You will need to remove the factory radio bracket to fit this one in and cut away 90% of the plastic on top of the radio (you won't see it). After that, it mounts in easy but removing the factory bracket will require a Dremel and some good muscle to rip that thing out. Overall, good but not great. I mean what kind of engineer doesn't put a mute feature in and builds MirrorLink to only work with 2 Android phones in late-2013?

Pros: Good unit for the price

Cons: No phone mute, MirrorLink literally sucks.

2 downsides I've noticed, 1 the extra bulky android receiver box, and 2 the built in fan is loud. with problem 1 I located mine in my glove box as I wanted access to it if I needed to do any updating via the SD card slot and I didn't have room behind the dash for it or under the seats. Plenty of wire is provided to locate this thing just about anywhere, but yes its a brick. I see the new units some how have this built in now, but for the price tag its worth sacrificing your glove box. and problem 2 I only notice when I turn the car off, or if the car isn't running and I have the volume all the way down, my other JVC units didn't have nearly as loud of a fan, but hey, if you can hear the fan, then why is your volume down that low?? right? ok moving on... as far as the mirror link, I suggest searching for the FULL mirroring .apk that people have modified and then installing an app like home switcher even if you don't have a different home screen you select this app from the short cuts and it gives you full access to your phone as if you were using it. downside is its a little slow, but who knows maybe they will make some software updates to speed it up a bit. as far as the USB it works great just like my previous JVC units, has nice EQ settings for each, the Pandora app works good, blue tooth works great except talking to people on the phone they think i'm talking into a tin can but whatever, and the load time is shorter then my previous avx740. just ground the park break wire

Pros: sounds good, all the features from your phone using the FULL mirroring modified .apk and home switcher as short cut

Cons: extra bulky box for android hook up, fan on unit is loud, android screen movements are sluggish and delayed

I give it three star because it works as a DVD/CD reciever. but nothing more than that. Mirrorlink doesn't work with my Sony Xperia Z (which support mirrorlink), my iphone 4 is too slow to keep the app up and useful, only work with handful of phone (actually two, iphone 4s and GS3) is biggest drawback. JVC needs to keep up with the technology, only support one phone or two...or three if you count iphone 4 is not going to win any business over.

Pros: bluetooth works fine, sound quality is better than stock unit, screen is good and clear

Cons: mirrorlink, stay away from it for now. iphone app mode is confusing, and only app that ever work is waze (and it ran super slow on iphone with AV cable), I did not try motion X nav app though so my comment may not be valid.

I'll give it one star because it does what it's supposed to do and another star for cool display, etc. Great price. However, for me the value stops there. I have an iPhone 5 which came out a year ago and there's still no support for it. JVC avoids the question and won't give me an answer on any plans to support it in the future. Same is true with the Galaxy S4. So if you have an older gen phone and plan to keep it for a while, then this is an awesome buy. If you want to upgrade to a newer phone (or not so new iPhone 5) then stay FAR away from this product! To be fair, my 5 does work when plugged into the standard USB cable using the cable that came with my phone, but for Audio and Pandora only. No GPS or any other apps will display on this head unit from the 5. I understand the Galaxy S4 issue is between Samsung and MirrorLink. I normally install my own stereos, but I paid to have this one installed because it called for tapping into the brake wire, reverse light wire, and grounding to chasis (per manual), so it was more than I had time to get into. Probably going to return for a unit that supports external display with my 5. That was the whole point behind me switching to double-din with touch screen. The EQ settings are a little on the lame side, but there is a user setting that you can customize.

    Pros: Touchscreen, good sound.

Cons: doesn't work with newer gen phones (not officially).More complex install than typical stereos, lame EQ

Bought this for my 2012 jeep grand cherokee. Unit came in fast and packaged extremely well. Installation took about four hours because of having to grind down the inner dash a little with a dremel tool (highly recommend getting this tool for the install if you have a modded fit). Had a few questions connecting the unit harness to the optional steering wheel control adapter but calling the crutchfield tech guys helped me over that hurdle. After the install the unit sounded great but I do have a few issues with it. Using the optional iPhone adapter kit for the applink is very buggy. Applink doesn't seem to support some of the VERY LIMITED apps it claims it does. The GPS programs that transfer to the unit have horrible resolution and limited to no controls. Most if not all gps functions need to be controlled via phone. The blue tooth is buggy and sometimes doesn't pick up calls or when you decline calls, it will continue to ring forever until the unit is manually turned off (even if the phone itself declined the call). Overall I would have gone for something more high end.

First off I would like to thank Crutchfield for all of their help. JVC:The unit itself as a whole is pretty cool. Installation was a pain in the butt. I rate my skill set as an intermediate, and I still had a difficult time with both physical/electronic installation. JVC's instructions were not very clear and their call center wasn't very nice or very much help. Almost every operator I encountered sounded either irritated or was condescending to me when I asked questions about their product.I thought the MirrorLink feature was the best thing EVER! have a Samsung Galaxy3s and you have to download the MirrorLink App from Samsung in order for the JVC unit to work. Samsung really needs to allow for more integration with the MirrorLink app. There must be some kind of disconnect between the two companies because once all app's, updates, bug fixes, etc. are installed and uploaded to both products some of the features are inoperable or one works and the other don't.BOTH:Streaming music IF you could get it to work sounds good. Bluetooth feature sync's up pretty easy. BUT phone quality is at minimum.I-Pod integration is pretty cool. Works well with my unit.Display is nice Controls and buttons are pretty straight forward, But it is quite confusingwhen you want to operate multiple features. Be warned. It sounds good looks ok.. It's just the not what I expected. To be frank the MirrorLink feature Blows!!! As far as my recommendation.Get a different unit.

Pros: Decent sound quality, east and quick Bluetooth sync and reasonable price.

Cons: MirrorLink is Terrible! set up and instal can be a little bit difficult and confusing.

For my first time installing a new head unit, or even seeing what a car stereo looks like, I'd say that this was a fairly easy process - just a bit time consuming. Granted, I was blessed with my dad's engineering gene and his tools in his shop. You do have to combine wires together but if you're able to read/follow directions then this becomes a piece of cake. I also put the smartphone adapter box in my glove box because i didn't have enough space behind the stereo - or at least I didn't think I did. The system itself is pretty easy to follow/use when turning it on and playing around with it (read the manual). Currently my phone is not compatible with the "mirror link" technology but I'm hoping that it will work, when I upgrade to the S3, after reading all of the bad reviews about the program. So far, I've only had this stereo installed for 3 days but I love it. It's a nice upgrade from my factory unit and it has all the features I was looking for.

    Pros: Sound, Features, Price

Cons: Hands free Microphone is very poor quality - sound is distorted and sounds "very far away", long install but wasn't horrible, Mirror link not being able to connect to any smart phone, Smart phone adapter box is fairly large

    The good and the bad

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So this is replacing the Bose system in my Nissan. I was worried that I would lose the great sound. With the adapters the sounds is easily as good. The bluetooth AUDIO is awesome. The bluetooth CELL is horrible. The mic is horrible. Even with the echo cancellation on it's unusable. DRIVELINK: Do NOT download the Mirrorlink app from the store. Download the free app from Samsung. Save yourself $5. The BUMMER is it only charges @ 500ma, which is only 1/2 the wall or car charger. If you have navigation on and you are playing music the phone charge will go down. It will NOT improve. If you turn the screen off to conserve power, the navigation will halt. USB: Interesting, is if you have a folder with only files you are OK. If you have a folder with other folders, it doesn't see them. My wife's 2013 Sonata will recognize and let you drill down folders, but not this one. Kinda of dumb since Windows nestles them that way when you rip them. Audio controls are good, and I think the interface is pretty intuitive. PLay with it a little after reading the manual and you got it covered. OVERALL: I bought it for the MirrorLink, so I could put navigation on the screen, but now I stream audio from the phone, keep navi on the phone screen, and if I need it, I'll turn on the voice audio so it interrupts the music. Still kinda bummed about the USB folder thing. I would love to have a 32GB stick plugged in. Just might have to suck it up and change the folder structure to appease the stereo.

Pros: SOund is good, works good, price is nice.

Cons: Cell phone MIC is horrible. USB folders thing is weird, there are a lot of wires and the smart phone box to install. Takes up some space!

Great head unit for a great price. Once the correct DriveLink (full mirroring) app is installed, MirrorLink works wonderfully. Very pleased.

Pros: Great price. Easy install. MirrorLink works great with Samsung Galaxy S4 when correct DriveLink app installed.

Cons: Mirror Link didn't work at first. Took quite a bit of internet searching to find DriveLink app with full mirroring. Wish DVD receiver read Blu-Ray disks as well.

Got it working with my Note 2, the app is a little flaky but can't put that completely on the head unit. Works great with iphone\ipod and the DVD movies look fine. Overall I'm very happy with the product.

Pros: EQ Touch screen is good, but not great Appearance Easy installation thanks to Crutchfield install kit Ability to use Samsung Drivelink and ipod\iphones

Cons: Samsung Drivelink can be flaky but I believe that is mostly app related

    1. To date, when switching from "MirrorLink" to "Tuner" the power antenna will not rise. Will rise only when turning on the KW-NSX1. 2. For a novice like me this was difficult to install. 3. The "DriveLink" software (that you are required to install on your Android phone) is a huge problem. JVC has, so far, been unable to help me with getting the program to work as advertised. Though they have been great at answering the phone. Several of the screens in DriveLink are not referenced or pictured in the Instruction manual. 4. Still have not gotten the MirrorLink to function as advertised. The only program that it "Mirrors" is the "DriveLink" program. I have been unable, so far, to show streaming audio websites, such as TunedIn Radio on my KW-NSX1. JVC has told me it cannot be done, but I see it being done on YouTube. 5. You probably will need to significantly adjust the equalization. For me bass was utterly lacking, and I am not a fan of lots of bass. 6. Apparently this model has gone end of life. Wish Crutchfield had told me.

    Pros: Looks great

Cons: The software. Both the software in the KW-NSX1 and the program that you are required to download on your phone.

Overall nice product can only complain that there are limited apps for its use especially for the iPhone. If you have an iPhone I definitely recommend this over a more expensive built-in GPS model.

Pros: Nice user interface. Easy installation. Significant improvement of sound quality over stock unit. Excellent Crutchfield customer service.

Cons: Hands-free microphone for phone calls is inferior. Proprietorial navigation is not up to expectations for the price since it is the only navigation that is available. If there was other competition I'm sure the App product would evolve.

this is a great head unit. it works very well, the only thing that i wish was better was the ipod lags when scrolling through music and there are some buttons on the screen that aren't self explanatory and are hard to find in the instructions. im still unsure of how well the bluetooth works as some people I've talked to have said it echoes pretty bad and can be hard to understand me, even with the echo and noise reduction turned on. but i can understand them just fine. i cannot report on the sound quality as all of my speakers are running off of amps. other than that so far it seems to be a great head unit, especially for the money. i feel its one of the best deals out there currently for this level of a unit! would absolutely be a 5 star rating if the ipod didn't lag as much.

Pros: easy to use, nice screen thats even detachable. Has many many options that even more expensive head units dont have.

Cons: ipod lags more than i had hoped for.

I had a JVC before. It was an older model (i think the KW-avbt60) and I had issues right out of the box. This stereo was INCREDIBLY easy to set up if you know how to find some wires. Only took me 2 hours to install which included dismantling my dashboard for a custom hiding/install of the smart phone media box. All in all, I mad a seamless install to my vehicle, and the wires are completely hidden except in areas they need to be shown or accessed. The only issue i have with it is THIS DOES NOT ALLOW FOR PANDORA CONTROL VIA ANDROID LIKE IT CLEARLY STATES. ALSO, PLEASE NOTE THERE IS AN ISSUE WITH MIRROR LINK. THIS IS NOT THE RADIO, NOR JVC'S FAULT. IT IS SAMSUNG'S FAULT AND THE MIRROR LINK TECHNOLOGY. IT DOES NOT DO A FULL MIRROR OF THE PHONE, BUT INSTEAD, A VERY SELECT FEW OF THE APPS THAT SAMSUNG APPROVES.

Pros: Great quality, fast install time, mirrorlink is great

Cons: Mirror link apps are kind of lacking (search google to see complaints. THESE COMPLAINTS ARE ON SAMSUNG'S PART!!!), Seems like there isn't alot of bass compared to what I had before in my older stereo...Sound quality i guess?

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Crutchfield does not recommend the KW-NSX1 or any of the DDIN units for the Lexus ES300/ES330. The electrical interface with my car was simple enough and worked fine with the Crutchfield recommended parts. The DDIN dash panel from Lexus is over $100 so I saved some $$ with a Metra kit, however, the color of the Metra kit did not match my panel colors (darker than OEM). Overall, happy.

Pros: Sound quality is good considering the Axxess AMP interface. Nice display. Menus take some orientation to figure out. Bluetooth works quite well. The equalizer functionality is nice. The recommended installation supplies were helpful.

Cons: I am a little irritated with the lack of response to my questions from Crutchfield tech support. I finally got the answers on the internet. The separate smartphone interface unit is a bit obnoxious(large) but I had a cavernous area to hide it. JVC tech support for this unit is lacking. The firmware update recommended online was was already on my system. The Samsung Drivelink app is troublesome. I read that ARLIberator is great app but it requires rooting my GalaxyS3 so I am waiting on Samsung.

    Pretty Good....but read this!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I gave it a three star rating due to the fact that the Bluetooth for phone is basically worthless and do not even think of using the AM band on the tuner. The AM tuner barely could be next to the tower and it would have a hard time pulling in stations. FM is pretty good but could be a better for deck of this caliber. Samsung phone did hook up per design intent and that is a nice feature, Make sure you have the latest download update from the JVC site as unit comes with out latest in it. Nice logic and intuitive on the menus so kudos there. Wish the SubWoofer increase was on the tuner home screen. You have to menu through 3 screens to adjust given stations are received at different levels. I might be sending this back to CF based on Bluetooth...I can hear peeps fine but they can barely hear me no matter what phone or landline I call from this deck. JVC support blew me off and never responded to the BT or AM issues I am having!

Pros: nice intuitive design....did fit 2000 DeVille with a little finesse.....sounds great and nice range of adjustments...plays movies great!

Cons: Bluetooth and AM Band.....Radio Data System text is too small to read and if not on a preset station good luck reading what station number you are on....text is about 6 font when it could have been 12-15 font!

    Mostly good

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was wanting to upgrade my factory Avalanche to have a rearview camera, DVD and Nav. I figured a radio with mirror link was a better alternative to a radio with a nav unit, cheaper too. The bluetooth audio is good and only a few have commented that the Noise Reduction / Echo Cancellation makes me sound like I am in a room, but if I turn it off, there is a lot of background noise. Not particularly impressed with the lack of customization of the user interface and screens. I have not been able to get the device to use the phone's ringtone instead of the system ringtone, but I guess it works either way. Installation instructions were easy to follow and relatively straight forward, except for the mounting kit, but I finally figured it out. My biggest problem during the install was that I had a bad speaker. Crutchfield was awesome and sent out a new GMOS-01. There were a lot of wires and modules to get up in the dash, but I did not have to cut any mounting / support brackets to get this unit installed which was good.

Pros: Bluetooth, Phonebook access, phone presets

Cons: Mirrorlink module is a separate module that you have figure out where to install / mount it, if you don't have a voice enabled phone it is a bit distracting navigating the phone book

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was waiting to upgrade the head unit in my 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe until I could utilize the navigation from my cell phone. This new mirrorlink technology is simply amazing! You can only use it for the google maps navi, music stored on the phone, and placing/receiving calls (bluetooth must be set up as well). But not having to buy a iphone to use these features made me extremely happy. I am going to install new component sets and subwoofers soon, but the stock speakers along with this unit have incredible high's, mid's and bass as it is. My only complaint about this head unit is the ipod navigation. There is no way to search for specific artists, songs, or genres from the head unit. Instead you must slowly scroll through small listings of the category. It would be nice if the letters appear as you scroll quickly like it does on the ipod. Other than that, it's a GREAT BUY and at this price, a GREAT VALUE.

Pros: Connects flawlessly to the Galaxy S3, huge improvement in the sound, and extremely easy to navigate the menus.

Cons: Navigating the ipod through the head unit is a bit of a pain since there is no quick scroll or type search feature.

The smartphone adapter module is also fitted with an 8' cable terminated by a proprietary 12-pin connector to connected the module to the KW-NSX1 receiver. In addition, the smartphone adapter module comes with a 4-pin harness (Power/Ground/Remote/Brake) which will need to be hardwired to the KW-NSX1 and your vehicle's wiring. The smartphone adapter module can be hidden away under the dash.

    Note: The Smartphone adapter module measures 6.5625" (w) x 1.375" (h) x 5.125" (d).

MirrorLink (for Android/Nokia): MirrorLink technology offers seamless connectivity between your compatible smartphone and the JVC KW-NSX1 receiver through its USB connection. Compatible phones included the the Samsung Galaxy s III (w/ Android iOS) and select Nokia Symbian mobile phones. MirrorLink duplicates your smartphone's display on the head unit's touchscreen monitor, so you can operate MirrorLink compatible applications that have been optimized for in-car use on your smartphone from the head unit's touchscreen controls for a safer driving experience. The following apps (Drive Link and Car Mode) must be downloaded to your compatible smartphone before using MirrorLink.

    • Drive Link for Samsung Galaxy S III (Android): To use MirrorLink with your Samsung Galaxy S III, the free "Drive Link" application must be downloaded from Samsung Apps and installed on your compatible Samsung Galaxy S III smartphone. Once downloaded, individual apps are grouped into three categories (Music, Location, Phone) for easy access. Selecting a category lets you quickly access specific apps for music playback, car navigation and maps, as well as hands-free telephone communication.
      • Music: You can listen to every music file stored in the smartphone. You can search for your music files by Favorites, Playlists, Artists, Albums, or All Songs.
      • Location: You can navigate via Google Maps. You are able to speak and type destinations. The app provides you with an on-screen map screen and audible directions.
      • Phone: The app retrieves all contact information stored in the smartphone. You can make and answer phone calls from the head unit's touchscreen, just as you would normally do on your smartphone. The head unit will even read aloud text messages and let you reply.
    • Nokia Car Mode w/ MirrorLink: To use MirrorLink with your Nokia smartphone, the "Nokia Car Mode with Mirrorlink" application ($29.99) must be downloaded from the Nokia Store and installed on your compatible Nokia smartphone.  Once downloaded, individual apps are grouped into three categories (Call, Drive, Music) for easy access. Selecting a category lets you quickly access specific apps for music playback, car navigation and maps, as well as hands-free telephone communication.

Note: Compatible Samsung and Nokia phone models, their launch timing, as well as Car Mode compatibility will differ by country or origin. Click here for MirrorLink compatible smartphone models from Samsung and Nokia.

Drive Change Mode (for BlackBerry): The JVC KW-NSX1's USB port supports playback from BlackBerry smartphones (via USB mass storage mode). JVC's Drive Change Mode lets you connect your BlackBerry smartphone (that uses an external memory card) directly to the head unit, via USB. Drive Change Mode will let you switch between your BlackBerry smartphone's internal and external memory (such as microSD Card), so you can listen to music stored on either memory. You'll continue to be able control basic playback functions; such as folder/file search, play/pause, and skip next/previous; regardless of memory type.

    iPod/iPhone Integration

iPod/iPhone Connectivity: The JVC KW-NSX1 supports audio/video playback from select Apple iPods and iPhones.

    • Audio/Video Playback: The optional JVC KS-U30 USB A/V Cable For iPod/iPhone (105KSU30, sold separately) allows you to playback and control audio/video from your iPod or iPhone on this JVC multimedia head unit. You can access audio/video content stored on your iPod/iPhone device or apps streamed to your Apple device. The cable features a proprietary Apple iPod 30-pin dock connector on one end and a male composite video/stereo audio RCA connectors on other end, along with a USB type-A connector. The cable plugs into the unit's rear-panel AV input and USB port. The unit's USB port handles the control, metadata display, and charging of your iPod/iPhone. The composite video/stereo RCA inputs handle audio and video transfer from your iPod/iPhone to the JVC receiver. By using the AV input, the music travels to the receiver as an analog signal, so you can even play the Digital-Rights-Protected files you've stored on your iPod/iPhone. The unit's rear-panel AV input must be set to "iPod" in order to playback audio/video from your connected iPod/iPhone. Video can only be displayed while the vehicle is in park.
    • Audio Only Playback: If you only want to playback audio from your iPod or iPhone, you can simply connect it to the KW-NSX1's USB port using the USB/iPod dock cable that came with your iPod/iPhone. This 1-wire USB connection bypasses the iPod/iPhone's DAC and sound quality is maximized through the head unit's 24-bit D/A converter, allowing for a Signal-to-Noise ratio up to 95dB. The unit's rear-panel AV input must be set to "AV-IN" in order to use the 1-wire USB connection. You will not be able to play Digital-Rights-Protected files. This 1-wire connection only supports audio stored on your iPod/iPhone device and Pandora (no other apps or video content).

Note: If you have an iPod nano (7th gen), iPod touch (5th gen), or iPhone 5/5C/5S; use the Lighting-to-USB cable that came with your Apple device to connect to the head unit. Or, use the JVC KSU-30 iPod cable (105KSU30, sold separately), plus the Apple Lightning to 30-pin adapter (472LTN230P, sold separately) to access audio apps. These Apple devices only support audio playback (no video output).

iPod/iPhone Control: You can choose to control your connected iPod/iPhone from the head unit and from the iPod/iPhone's clickwheel or touchscreen.

    • Head Unit: From the head unit's touchscreen you can search for music by Playlist, Artist, Album, Song, Podcast, Genre, Composer, and Audiobook. You can search video by Playlist, Movies, Music Videos, TV Shows, and Video Podcasts. Once a Playlist or Category is selected, the content is listed in alphabetical order. The KW-NSX1 also supports Repeat (file/all) and Random (album/all) playback functions of your iPod/iPhone.

    Audio Section

24 Bit D/A Converter: The JVC KW-NSX1 utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The KW-NSX1 is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the KW-NSX1 are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the KW-NSX1 are as follows:

    • CEA2006 Specs: 20 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (200 total watts)

Amplifier Gain Control: When you are using the KW-NSX1 with factory speakers (or those rated to less than 50 watts peak), the Amplifier Gain Control can limit the amount of power being sent to those speakers. When the Amp Gain Control is set to low, the volume control ranges from 0 (minimum) to 30 (maximum). When using speakers rated higher than 50 watts peak, you can set the Amp Gain Control to high, and the volume control will range from 0 to 50. The internal amp can also be turned off when all the speakers are powered by outboard amplifiers.

5ch/4V Preamp Outputs (w/ Sub Level Control): The KW-NSX1 is equipped with 5ch/4.0V preamp outputs (Front, Rear, Subwoofer). The front and rear preamp outputs allow fader control, while the subwoofer preamp output is non-fading. You can adjust the KW-NSX1's subwoofer level (-50 to +10) independently from the head unit's main volume control for added bass volume.

Built-in Crossovers: The JVC KW-NSX1 features a built-in high-pass filter for the unit's front & rear speakers, and a low-pass filter for the unit's subwoofer output.

    • High-Pass Filter: You can activate a variable high-pass filter (40, 60, 80, 100, 120, 150, 180, 220 Hz or Through) for the unit's front & rear channels (speaker- or preamp-level), so low frequency signals are cut off from your system's front & rear speakers. The front & rear channel's high-pass filters can be set independently of one another.
    • Low-Pass Filter: The unit's subwoofer preamp output features a low-pass filter. In order to prevent high-frequencies from being sent to your system's subwoofers, you can set the cutoff frequency of the low-pass filter to 50, 60, 80, 100, 120 Hz or Through.

Speaker Select: You can select which type & size of speaker you have connected to the head unit. Choose from Standard (OEM/Factory), Narrow (4"/5"), Middle (6"/5x7"/6x8"), Wide (6x9").

Pro EQ: The KW-NSX1 is equipped with JVC's Pro EQ. The integrated equalizer offers 8 preset sound modes (Flat, Natural, Dynamic, Vocal Boost, Bass Boost, Vibrant, and User) suitable for the music genre of your choice. The User mode allows you to manually adjust the head unit's 3-band parametric EQ (Frequency, Level, and Q-Factor).

    Frequency Level Q
    Bass 60, 80, 100, 150 Hz +/- 10 dB (-5 to +5) 1.0, 1.25, 1.5, 2.0
    Midrange 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 kHz +/- 10 dB (-5 to +5) 1.0, 2.0
    Treble 10.0, 12.5, 15.0, 17.5 kHz +/- 10 dB (-5 to +5) Fixed

Note: The audio adjustments are memorized for each individual source until you adjust the sound again.

Loud (Loudness): This feature boosts low and high frequencies to produce a well-balanced sound at a low volume level. You can set the Loudness to On or Off.

Dynamic Range Compression: This function reduces a Dolby Digital soundtrack's dynamic range so you can hear quieter dialog without being overwhelmed by loud sections. You can choose a setting of On (reduced dynamic range), Dialogue (clearer movie dialogue), or Off (full dynamic range).

Volume Adjust: The input level of each source (other than FM) is adjustable relative to the FM radio volume, so there isn't a significant volume difference when changing sources. Each source is individually adjustable from -15 to +6.

Key-Touch Tone: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

    AV Connections

Dual A/V Inputs: The JVC KW-NSX1 DVD receiver is fitted with two audio/video inputs. The unit features a front-panel 3.5mm audio/video input for connecting a temporary external A/V source, such as a game console. The head unit also features a composite video/stereo audio RCA input on the rear-panel for connecting a permanent external A/V source, such as a Blu-ray player or mobile ATSC tuner. The rear-panel audio/video input can be set to one of the following modes:

    • AV IN: Choose when connecting an A/V component like a game system.
    • iPod Video: Select when connecting your iPod using the optional USB/Video cable (105KSU30, sold separately).

Camera In: The rear-panel Camera input consists of a composite video connector which allows you to connect an optional rear-view camera (105KVCM20, sold separately). The unit features a reverse gear signal wire, that when connected to your vehicle's reverse light circuit, will automatically switch the KW-NSX1's display to the rear-view camera input. Automatic video switching takes approximately 1.2 seconds. Audio from your music source will continue playing, while the back-up camera is displayed.

Video Output: The rear-panel Video Output consists of a composite video jack that allows you to connect an optional external monitor. You can watch the same audio/video source that is being played back on the JVC head unit on your connected external monitor (sold separately).
