Our take on the Polk Audio db651

Good music becomes great when you hear it through Polk's db Series car speakers. Give new life to your music

Good music becomes great when you hear it through Polk's db Series car speakers. Polk engineers use laser imaging to determine the ideal combination of speaker materials and design to eliminate distortion. The resulting technology produces speakers with smooth frequency response, sharp detail, and the ability to play music at high volumes without strain.

Power and precision

Polk's db651 speakers feature 6-1/2" woofers made from a polymer/mica composite and durable rubber surrounds that won't fall apart under stress from heat, moisture, or time. Liquid-cooled 3/4" silk/polymer dome tweeters use powerful Neodymium magnets to deliver precise high-frequency reproduction, enveloping you in bright musical detail. And you can even pivot the tweeters, aiming them at your ears for improved stereo imaging. The built-in two-way crossovers keep the high and low frequencies flowing to the proper drivers for seamless, efficient audio.

These speakers feature stainless steel mounting hardware and muscular ABS grilles that will add a stylish touch to your car's interior. The supplied adapter rings enable the db651 speakers to fit into both 6-1/2" and 6-3/4" openings, ensuring an easy fit into VWs, Audis, BMWs, and other European imports.

These speakers sound great! You cannot go wrong with these polks. I just replaced some 6.5 in alpines with these cause one of the alpines popped after the second year and just made my Sierra complete cause I have the component Polks up at the front with a 50x4 Kenwood amp running them. There is a difference between the alpines and these the polks are much clearer and seem like they're louder because of the clear highs. Definitely recommend.

Pros: Love the sound. Great quality materials.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers are, as expected, high quality. They were an easy install and the included during adapters from Crutchfield were a nice touch. They are crisp and clear with a nice, tight midrange punch. There is very little bass, though I didn't expect any out of 6.5" speakers. My one criticism is that they are a bit bright, bordering on harsh, when playing certain music. With EQ adjustment this can be minimized. Overall, these are great speakers, especially for the price!

Pros: Crisp, clear highs Tight, punchy midrange

Cons: Overly bright on occasion

Very happy with this purchase. All 4 of my door speakers had blown so I bought 2 sets of these. So far I have only replaced the front doors as the back ones will require a little more effort. The sound is pretty good with my stock head unit but I will be changing that out in the near future and I'm sure that will improve it even more. Going from only having tweeters in the pillars to even just 2 speakers has been awesome. I had forgotten how awesome good quality audio in a vehicle was. Norm helped me make my decision on these speakers given the parameters I had set in place for myself. Kudos to Crutchfield and the support staff.

Pros: Good highs and lows, easy to install

Cons: None so far

Pros: Good Bass, smooth mids, balanced tweeter. Reasonable price.

Cons: System didn't show these fit. Read specs of other suggested speakers and compared specifications to confirm they would fit.

Easy to Install once you get the Right Adapter Ring

David from New York, NY on 2/28/2017

2006 Subaru Forester
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Since I upgraded my head unit, I wanted to pair it to a good set of speakers. I did my research and wanted a marine-certified speaker, just in case water got into the door panel. I have a 2006 Subaru Forester, so this speaker cannot just replace the existing OEM speakers because the existing speaker is housed in a plastic ring that is attached to the door with 3 screws, not the 4-hole pattern the speakers or the Polk Audio adapter ring that came with it. When I just fitted the speaker directly to the door, the window mechanism scraped the magnetic part of the speaker. When I called Crutchfield tech support, they said according to their information, there should be enough clearance. If not, use the adapter ring that came with the speakers. Note To Crutchfield: there is not enough clearance. I read the Subaru forums and they also agree that some adapter needs to be installed to achieve the clearance necessary. I ordered from a different aftermarket online retailer the Subaru 6.5 Universal Speaker Adapter Ring because I did not want to drill any holes into the sheetmetal of the door - this Adapter Ring matches the 3-hole pattern perfectly. I attached the Polk Audio db651 speakers to these adapter rings (these holes did not line up perfectly, but close enough), with the foam that was enclosed and attached it to the door. The window mechanism moved up and down with no problems. I buttoned-up the door trim panels and now the speakers sound great! I am thinking about replacing the rear speakers now!

Pros: Great Sound

Cons: Adapter Ring that comes with the speakers did not match the contours of my door panel. Had to purchase the correct adapter ring from a different aftermarket online retailer.

Great Polk sound on the go! The mids and high frequencies are great, they blow the speakers I had in the fromt doors out of the water. Can't beat polk tweeters. I would recommend a subwoofer, but then again I always do. Takes a little load off the mids. Still, fantastic performance and quality for the price!

Pros: Installation, sound at high and low volumes, power capabilities, 35hz low frequency, pivoting tweeter, clear sound

Cons: Really can't think of any.

Good bang for the buck

Anthony from Metairie, LA on 1/14/2017

2004 Chevrolet Avalanche
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm giving these speakers 5 stars due to their combination of performance and "bang for the buck." I recently did a bit of an upgrade on my truck. I got one of those Sony head units with the 40X4 class D amp in it and got the Polks because my back speakers were blown. I have/had Kicker CS654's in the front. When the stuff came in, I did the install. After installing the head unit, I installed the Polks in the back to replace the blown speakers. Once I had everything up and running, I was stunned by how much better the Polks sounded compared to the Kickers. I also noticed that the Polks were doing nicely with the head unit, being able to max the volume out while hearing nothing but crisp, clear music. The Kickers, on the other hand, couldn't keep up. Needless to say, I stripped all four doors and put the Polks up front and adjust the balance the take it easier on the Kickers. Gonna have another set of Polks on the way soon.

Pros: The do exactly what they're supposed to do. Good bass for the size.

Cons: I have to wait for my second pair to arrive.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was on a debate for the last few months on whether to get these or some Kicker CS65's. I decided to do a sound test at a local shop of mine, since they had both speakers hooked up. When it comes to clarity and high quality, these are the speakers you want. They produce a bit of bass, but not too much. If you want some bass, I would suggest adding a sub, which I decided to do, since these were built for highs and mids. I couldn't believe how much clear songs were to me. I even heard ad libs in songs I've never heard before, such as a rap song that randomly yelled out the "B" word, or an alternative song, where they messed up on a chord. These speakers will not disappoint what so ever. The gold color on these speakers make them shine as well. A+ in my book.

Pros: Highs and mids are very clear. Color goes well. Speaker grill is such a nice add on, as well.

Cons: Can't turn these up too loud, or will start distorting. Best with an amp.

Dodge Ram Speakers

CL from Tampa, FL on 7/25/2016

2004 Dodge Ram 2500
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall, these turned out to be great speakers. I mounted them in the rear doors of a Ram 2500 Quad Cab and replaced the factory 5 1/4" Infinity speakers. Yes They Fit...even though Crutchfield says they do not. You will have to drill 4 new holes and do not use a spacer. Great full sound. Paired with the Polk dxi691 in the front doors to match tambre and the Pioneer x6800 deck. I can hear everything loud and clear, even over custom exhaust. Note that I do have an aftermarket Sounstream amp for the (4) door speakers and using the factory Infinity amp for the dash speakers. Great for rock (Rush and Zeppelin sound fantastic) but not so good for deep rap (you would need an additional sub). I used aftermarket shielded, thicker speaker wire and it was a PAIN to wire throughout the truck...especially getting it into the doors so BEWARE! If you're not too picky... use the factory wires and splice in.

Pros: Great sound... although amp'ing them is HIGHLY recommended.

Polk DB651 + MTX Thunder75.4 = match made in heaven

Andrew O. from Illinois on 6/1/2016

2012 GMC Sierra
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I read all the tips, all the reviews, and decided to go with 4 DB651's and an MTX Thunder75.4 amp to push them. I installed a 4 channel line level converter behind my factory radio, put the amp under the rear seat, and rewired all the speakers. This project took me a long time but it was well worth it. According to videos I found here, my stock wiring wouldn't be big enough to handle all the power that I'm sending to the new Polk's, because they are 60w RMS, so I ran all new 16ga wire from the amp to the speakers. After dialing in the gain on the converter and amp, and tuning the factory head unit, these speakers are crystal clear and LOUD!!! Listen to the people that work at Crutchfield, size your amp based on what speakers you plan to run, run the right sized wires for everything, and adjust it all properly. You won't regret taking the advice, I would have screwed it all up if I hadn't I'm sure.

Pros: Great sound Even at high volume they stay clear Bass is not overpowering, because they are 6.5" speakers, not subwoofers. Bass is great for size of speakers.

Cons: I didn't do this the day after I bought my truck, which I should have.

Cons: wrong screws no biggie

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After weeks of research on the web and several calls to Online Stores it looked obvious that Polk Audio was "the" choice. I paired up the db 6501 (Front) with the db651 (Soundbar). After install I tested the speakers without the LOC , Amp, and Sub-woofer already sounded fantastic! But I did add LOC + Amp and eventually a Sub-woofer. I listen to Classical Music and powerful Progressive Rock both most demanding benchmark for speakers and I could not be happier. Sound is powerful, Highs are very clear and the sound is warm and natural and the fact they are Marine Grade makes them the absolute best choice for a soft top Jeep.

Pros: Powerful, very clear highs, warm and natural + Marine Grade!!!

Cons: Small plastic modifications that I will love to avoid next time...

Polk DB651 Speakers

These speakers have much cleaner highs than the OEMs that came with my 2016 Subaru Crosstrek. The free Metra wires made it plug and play. I'm 71 and don't care much for bass. I set my equalizer to -3 at 63 Htz. The bass is cleaner and tighter than the OEMs. I set the Equalizer to +4 at 6.3K Htz. I don't hear above 10K Htz anymore.

Pros: Improved sound at a good price.

Great sounding speakers. The included mountng plate was not useful for installing in a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado. I ended up prying the old speakers out of the original adapters and using them with the new speakers. Several mods had to be done to make it fit. Only after installing did I realize there was a METRA adapter listed on the website to make installation easier. I wish Crutchfield would have pointed it out instead of having to dig for it. My install would have been much easier.

Pros: Great speaker quality, great sound.

Cons: None if proper speaker adapter is used.

These speakers were an absolute bargain! Polk has always made great speakers and these are no different. I'm currently running them straight off of a Pioneer headunit and they sound great! I can crank the volume and the sound stays clean. Of course, the fact that they come with Crutchfield's amazing support makes them an even better bargain.

Pros: Great sound. Outstanding value.

Cons: A little bright sounding, but that's easily fixed if your headunit has even a basic EQ.

DB651 GMC Canyon Crew Cab Rear Door Install

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Speakers sound great! The Customer Service representative told me to buy the DB651 speakers over the kickers. I installed them in the rear so driving I notice a little difference. Also got rid of the blown factory speaker. That's a big plus. When you sit in the rear seats, wow, what a difference! They sound great. I love these speakers because of the swivel tweeter. I still have to position the tweeters. Only thing different from what is mentioned by crutchfield is that the rear doors in a 2006 GMC Canyon Crew Cab there has to be removal of metal. I just used tin snips since that's what I had available. It was a little road block but it was all well worth it. It's worth the $20 to go with these instead of the kickers just for the swivel tweeter!!! First time buyer from Crutchfield. So far so good. Next will be the DB651 component set for the front speakers.

Pros: Sound Great Great Highs and Mids, better bass over stock speakers All around great built speaker Swivel tweeter! Adapters are included! Everything was plug and play Crutchfield knows their stuff

Cons: Had to cut metal with tin snips, I tryed a dry fit into the door without bracket or foam ring. Hole was too small. Then tryed with bracket and foam ring, still too small. Drilled holes, screwed adapter bracket into place, then cut the metal away. Then it was all easy.

Nice, heavy duty speakers to replace some cheap, lightweight factory ones in the doors. Fit perfectly with the mounting bracket. Only thing missing were the blade connectors to attach to the speakers. I was hoping Crutchfield would include these.

Cons: Blade connectors should be included

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great sounding speakers to replace my dying factory driver door speakers in my 2006 Subaru Forester. I have the subwoofer and sail panel tweeters installed so the Polks are probably not as dramatic improvement as without but now the mids and lows are tighter for better sound balance. No install issues and no clearance issues with the window using the Polk supplied spacer/mounting ring. It is a close fit so I needed to make sure the wiring did not interfere with the window and I needed to use an existing hole in the door panel to bring the wiring from the rear of the speaker to the factory connector location at the front of the speaker.

Pros: Great sound Simple install Good price

Cons: None.

I've been into audio for a very long time and Polk audio makes great products. The db651 are great sounding speakers. I installed 4 of these in an Chevy Silverado 2500 that I use for work. They are powered with an Alpine head unit only. At first I was kind of skeptic on the sound but but realized with experience that their is a break in period. After a few days the sound is fantastic. I had to also adjust the parametric eq in the head unit because of the trucks acoustics. These have great bass and highs. Thumbs up Polk audio!

Pros: Great for the budget in mind

I have installed polk speakers in all my vehicles these speakers are great. Highs and mids are excellent, lows are the best I've heard from a non amplified 6 1/2. Another thing I love is they are marine certified! Which some people may not understand that the inside of your door gets wet but fyi it does. I have even seen them fill with water like 1/4 of the door, but polk speakers are ok to get a wee bit wet! Thank you Polk engineers!

Pros: Marine certified, great range, lovely crisp sound

Cons: I have had one speaker fail before but it was 4 years old and in my drivers door which gets slammed often.

There is a clear sound quality improvement from my factory 6.5s in my subaru imprezza. Highs are.much higer and mids and lows much improved. Pushed by an alpine power pack, they are giving their all. Theyre priced nice yet i beleieve there are comparable if.not.slightly better options especially on sale. Dont get.me wrong, theyre solid performers and worth the money.

Pros: Big improvement over factory Hits the whole freq.range very well Do extremely well amplified to rms

Replaced my stock 6.5" speakers in my 2009 Silverado with these, and left the head unit in to test, and it was a HUGE change in quality just from the simple speaker swap. Easy to install, fit was correct, sound is way better than stock. Later added in an 8100NEX head unit and that upped the sound quality yet again. No amp, subs, tweeters, nothing else added, and the sound is good enough for me. No more muffled sounds and no distortion when turned up.

Pros: Good all around speaker, good price, easy install.

If I am comparing these to my stock speakers then they are a good speaker. The polk is a lot more clear and doesn't rattle with bass. I installed these in the front on a Nissan Frontier 2004 truck and the install was not super easy if you don't have experience. Nissan doesn't carry harness extension on the front speaker so you have to splice and use female terminal adapters. You have to use included bracket to screw speaker to car door. It's hard to give these speakers a fair review because I still have the stock radio which doesn't give it enough power, also I haven't compared them to other aftermarket speakers.

Pros: Upgrade over stock speakers

Cons: not an easy install and all parts needed for install not included (nissan frontier 2004)

2009 Saturn Outlook
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have had these speaker in my Saturn Outlook for a couple of years, and I have finally gotten around to tearing them out. Possibly these speakers are a good value for the price paid, but they really aren't wonderful. I was told by Crutchfield that they were recommended because they reproduced better details in the music than other comparable speakers. Unfortunately, they have other major weaknesses such as harsh sound, raspy voices, 'static' like noise from the tweeters, and lack of smoothness. I am running these speakers on a Kenwood dnx890hd head unit and a Clarion XC1410 amp (4x50w). Power is not the problem. I think that these speakers were my first recommendation from Crutchfield that was bad. Interestingly, I have called back several times for tips on how to make the sound quality better. Each time Crutchfield has insisted that my problem was not the speakers. Though most of the changes Crutchfield recommended has improved the sound, none of them have made the speakers sound good. (I have even resorted to rewiring the speaker from the Amp and that didn't really help). Honestly, I am suspicious as to why so many of the Crutchfield employees are recommending these speakers so much. I have used Crutchfield on and off for over 20 years. This is the first time I have received truly bad advice.

Pros: Good at reproducing instrumentals in the mid range Provides a full sound when given enough power (Aftermarket head unit alone will not be sufficient though) Saturn Outlook is a huge SUV. These speakers are plenty loud. Bass is adequate. These speakers are definitely far better than the stock speakers.

Cons: Womens voices are especially raspy. None of the voice reproduction is clean - male or female. None of the sounds (voice or instrumental) are very smooth My ears fatigue quite quickly and need to turn them off after a while. There is a lot of harshness to the sound quality of these speakers

Disappointed. The factory AC Delco speakers sounded better than these.

Pros: Fit well, easy to install.

Cons: Does not improve sound quality.

Crutchfield response on 1/14/2015 That's a common reaction when replacing car speakers. What you can expect to hear from a new speaker is better clarity and definition in the mids and highs. So your music will sound better and more lifelike, but you might not hear more bass. The only way to get more bass is to add more power, and if you want to keep the factory radio, that means adding an amplifier. A small (40-50 watts), 4-channel amp can supply twice the power of an aftermarket stereo and three or four times the power of the typical factory radio. That'll improve all the sound, but you'll especially hear it in the fullness of the bass.

Installed these in the rear doors of my '09 Subaru Forester (paired with DB651S in the front and powered by 22 watt JVC head unit) and they sound so much better than the stock factory speakers. I put them through their paces with a variety of music from driving drums and bass to intricate instrumentals to subtle vocals. Everything sounded tremendous, although I did detect some buzziness when I boosted the bass level on the EQ. However, this may be a result of my installation - I'll check it in the coming days - as I installed the rear doors first before I was completely confident of what I was doing.

2nd time I have bought from Crutchfield. Installed in rear door of 2005 Nissan Frontier. Pretty straight forward, did have to drill out the mounting plate holes as they were way to small to get the speaker screws started straight. Also had to extend the bottom mounting whole a quarter of inch to match factory door mount. Any way speakers sound great! Bass for classic rock hits pretty hard. Powered by a 25watt JVC head unit I bought last year. Was going to get amp and sub next year but might not have too. Can hardly wait to hear speakers once they are broken in, since I have heard they sound better after a several hour breakin.

Pros: Sound is great for classic rock. Bass was much better them expected when I listened to Boston's More Than A Feeling. Also sounds great when playing the 1812 Overture.

Cons: Mounting bracket had to be drilled, speed clips provided by Polk had to be removed in order to fit in factory mount.

My 2011 Silverado 2500HD came with a Bose Audio System. You would think that if Bose was going to put their name on something and maybe introduce someone that has never heard any of their product before, they would want to do a lot better than this. After upgrading the front speakers to the Polks there was definitely an improvement. Brighter and smoother top end and a little less distortion at louder levels. But not a significant change.

Pros: Better high frequency response than the factory speaker. Less distortion.

Cons: Not worth the cost and labor. Looks like to get the improvement I expected I'll have to revamp the whole system.

These sound okay but could be better. Maybe because it's only 6.5"? I got these to replace my 6x9's because the tech guys at Crutchfield told me that aftermarket 6x9's will not fit. I would have to get 6.5" with adapter plate. Well, I tried that and they fit but the sound size is very small compared to my stock 6x9's, so I returned these speakers back to Crutchfield. I did some sizing up and had bought some Polk 6x9 speakers. The tech was right that they didn't fit but, all I needed is an adapter ring for the 6x9. And guess where I found one? I used my stock Toyota 6x9 speakers and removed the cone and installed the new aftermarket 6x9 into the Toyota adapter. WaLa! It fit perfectly! And it sounds great too! I don't know why I haven't seen any tech forums suggesting this. It was so easy! Plus, I didn't need a wiring harness; I just soldered some new speaker wires onto the existing Toyota connector. Can you say plug and play?

Pros: If you have a Toyota Tacoma you can use an aftermarket 6x9's as long as you reuse the Toyota adapter.

Cons: Too small of sound!

The db651 is a nice speaker. Very smooth highs with no harshness and ample bass--it really moves some air. Sound MUCH better than VW Jetta MKVI factory speakers. I had the Polk DXi series installed in a different car with a different head unit. They were nice too, but I like the db series better. The DXi series seemed too sharp on the high end. Not the case with these.

Pros: Smooth highs. You can adjust the tweeter.

Cons: None with the speakers themselves. If you are installing in a VW Jetta Mk VI, the speakers will be a good 1.5" away from the door panel--Crutchfield doesn't supply a spacer like the factory speakers have, so some of your sound will get lost behind the door panel. Crutchfield has no installation instructions for the Jetta MKVI either. Really? The top selling VW car? Come on, Crutchfield.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Finished installing these earlier today, and I already love them! They replaced an older set of Polk's that had been driven hard for eight years and finally wore out, (model db650, bought here from Crutchfield back in 2005). These newer db651's are everything I hoped they would be. I have a 12-inch subwoofer, so I was unconcerned from the start about whether these Polks had good bass or not. Using the head unit's high-pass filter, I cut off frequencies below 80Hz to these Polks. Just love the warm tweeters! Marvelous! I absolutely love these Polks! The warmth of the tweeters is the very reason I bought db's a second time.

Pros: Clear and warm sound quality. Absolutely delightful!

Cons: Crutchfield's fit guide does not appear to be entirely accurate for my vehicle. I installed these in a 2003 Dodge Dakota club-cab. Fit-guide says these don't fit in the front door location. I think this might be true if attempting to re-use the Dodge factory bracket, which make the speakers protrude out approx. ¾-inch from the door's sheet metal, but it is not necessary to use the Dodge bracket. You can use the included Polk bracket or the Crutchfield supplied Scoche bracket and mount direct

Works for me!

I replaced the last two of the rear stock speakers with these and the sound stage definitely sounded so much more improved. Vocal sound really nice and I can hear words I had never heard with the stock. String instruments definitely sound much better. Bass is not the best, but I do not expect much since I need to add a subwoofer for that.

Pros: Better vocals, string instruments; great price and look very sturdy and well made.

Cons: Not the best bass,

I was a little hesitant on buying these as I figured crutchfield was just trying to sell polk and I was looking at another name brand but went ahead and ordered these. They came several days later and I installed them in my denali which was super easy. The music that came out was nice, crisp and clear so I am happy to have them. I have a factory amp and these speakers come alive. As everyone else has said if you want bass then add subs which I did and the polks complement the entire sound system. If you want great highs mixed with mids then buy these polk speakers you cant go wrong.

Pros: price, ease of install, and sound quality.

Recently I purchased a 2011 GMC Sierra truck. Unfortunately the stock speakers were so poor all music was muted and muddy. I knew Crutchfield could solve my problem and did so with the Polk db651 pair of 6 1/2 inch speakers that I installed in both doors. Highs are beautiful, mids are clear so the song words can be understood and the bass is nice and tight.

Pros: Installation instructions and all necessary hardware to install the speakers included. Nothing was left to guess at!

Derrick from NJ on 6/19/2013

Great sounding speakers for the money! At first i didnt like the amount of bass that they produced and was a little worried about it. Then roughly 1 month later they completely blow me away!! Alot of people seem to not know about a speakers break in time to really shine you need at least 80 to 100 hours of break in time and within that period do not turn them up past 3/4 of the volume if it is connected to a head unit and 1/2 way if connected to an amplifier. Trust me it is well worth the wait!!!!

Pros: Best 6.5 speakers for the money!!! Deep satisfying bass around 50hz and the mids are clean and highs are on the flat note (unlike infinity) which is the kind of sound i prefer!

Cons: The fact that we have to break the speakers in!!!

Great speaker and a significant upgrade to the sound. Did not fit the door, or the supplied adaptor kit. I would have had to use the speaker adapter to mount it on the separate adapter kit and that would have had to be modified to fit the car door I wound up modifying the original speaker/mount and attaching the speakers directly to that

Pros: Great sound. Decent price

Cons: Did not fit, supplied mount adapters did not fit. Took some energy to adapt original speaker/mount

I recently purchased a 2005 GMC Serria 1500 Crew Cab and the door speakers were shot. I decided to replace them with the Polk Audio db651 speakers and I couldn't be happier with my choice. The installation was fairly easy and the adaptors included made the speaker wire connections a snap. Just be sure to watch the video on YouTube first to make getting the door panels off eaiser. If you're not handy with a drill and figuring out how to adapt the front speakers to fit, you might want to get a friend to help. The speakers sounded a little flat at first but after a few days they sounded great. Good bass, midrange and treble. If the CD player in my stock radio wasn't broken I wouldn't change it. That will be my next project and I'll probably come back to Crutchfield for that.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got these to go with my JVC head unit in my truck and they sound great. I've had a lot of good experience with Polk DB speakers in the past and these were even better than I thought. I was expecting the bass to be non-existent or very weak, but they are very well rounded and actually thump a little depending on the music. (Your results may vary...it may just be my truck door cavity carries the low notes better than other car doors.) Of course the highs and mids are very good, which is pretty much a given for most Polk speakers and why I chose these in the first place. I bought some pioneer 6.5" speakers for half the price of the Polks to put in the rear just for fill and they sound crappy compared with the Polks. If I had to do it again I would probably get another pair of Polks for the rear, but oh well. That's what you get for trying to save money. Overall they are a great sounding co-axial speaker and worth the price. They are probably about as good as it gets for this configuration unless you step up to component speakerI would highly recommend them to anyone looking for a well performing speaker in this price range.

Pros: Great sound, well rounded, good value for the price

Cons: Don't like the grille cover design, but I didn't need them as they are behind the factory door panel screens anyway

This past weekend I replaced all 4 door speakers in our 2013 Kia Sportage with these units, and the improvement was definitely more than I anticipated. My wife is no audiophile, but she immediately noted the brighter and crisper treble, as well as the tighter, deeper, and more accurate bass response. With the 2013 Sportage, you do NOT have to use the "slim" versions of these speakers, and the factory head unit has more than enough power to drive them.

Pros: Excellent performance for the money

Cons: None whatsoever

Clear precise sound is my opinion of this product. A driver of this size is not capable of delivering a lot of bass, but neither is any other driver of this size. If you want bass you need to buy an apropriate subwoofer. As to the value, I cite the law of diminishing returns. You would have to spend a lot more for an incremental inrease in quality.

Pros: Accurate and a good value

I am going to share my experience with these speakers in my Nissan Versa 2010 SL. Like a many of us I had a question: Polk Audio db651or Polk Audio db651S? Ok I got them one of each pair. After 2 month of use them and switch them from front doors to back doors few times I can tell you that. Polk Audio db651 has a little more BASS but less MIDS and HIS and sounds great. I left them in the rear doors. Polk Audio db651S in the front doors has less BASS but excellent MIDS and excellent HIS. And compare sound to you old factory speakers you will start missing worm BASS you have from cheap paper speakers but now you have good clear sound. I call Crutchfield and after good advice I ordered and install small SUB under my seat Sound OrdnanceT B-8PT. It was my best investment for my car audio. Never wanted SUB in my car before, will never drive my cars without it. Very impressed and very happy. Thank you Crutchfield for recommend me that!

I spoke with a Crutchfield adviser and after I told him axactly what I had for a head unit, he reccomended the Polks. I was looking at marine speakers which were more money. Well I got them and installed them right away. Holy cow!!! The sound was great. I didn't even need an amp. This was last year I installed them on my open boat and they still sound great. I hose them down lightly when I wash the boat and it doesn't seem to bother them. Well, This new season I decided to change the head unit and also add a third set of speakers so I ordered the Polks again. I received them a few days ago and can't wait to install them in the boat. The four sound great with the new head unit so I know that adding two more is only going to make it sound even better. I trust Crutchfield with all of my car and marine audio.

I am a cheapskate with an Impreza, and I replaced the stock front speakers Polk mm651's and rear with Infinity 6032cf's. I am still using he stock head unit with no aftermarket amp or a sub. The Infinitys were clear in the high end, but had no bass whatsoever. Replaced them with db651's (I've had polks before in home systems and vehicles) and I couldn't be happier. Very full sound, even at the bottom end. I listen to rock (the who, zeppelin, kyuss, local h, blue oyster cult) and these handle that type of music well. These are really sweet speakers. They replaced the stock speakers in my 2003 Maxima. The difference was nothing short of amazing. These speakers sparkle in the high range and have really tight bass. The stereo imaging is killer. They are mounted in the doors on my Maxima and are just awesome in that location. I had a set of three way Kenwoods in my 1998 Maxima. Those were great speakers, but these Polks are way better. No problem with the fit except that the holes in the mounting ring need to be enlarged slightly to match up with the factory holes in the doors. This is in the instructions. I wish that the Crutchfield kit came with a wiring adapter. It takes some time to cut out the factory plug and splice the wires. A musical instrument produces a characteristic sound because of the combination of the fundamental and harmonic frequencies. The detail and texture added to the mid and low range after upgrading to Polk DB651 is nothing less than awesome. I can hear every single note as though it were live. My Factory Monsoon sound system always sounded a little "tinny" to me. Now it's richer and the bass kicks every detail. Speaker sensitivity is a measurement of the amount of sound output derived from a speaker with one watt of power input from an amplifier. The DB651 is very efficient at 92db and will maximize the performance of a stock car radio/amplifier. My Jetta Monsoon has gone from "okay" to driving you out of the car at half volume. Awesome result for a simple speaker refresh. Crutchfield Rocks!

I just installed the Polk Audio DB651 speakers in the front and the Polk Audio DB461 speakers in the rear. Wow, what a huge difference over stock. I had the bose speakers, but one went out. I got such a great deal for all 4 speakers through Crutchfield, that i decided to replace them all. I am so glad I did. I have a 2004.5 GMC Duramax in Extended Cab. I have the stock HU. I can't wait to replace that with something better.

Great mid-bass and mids, but highs are overwhelming

afish01 from Minneapolis on 4/25/2011

I got these for the front doors in my 2002 Civic sedan (yes, they do fit as long as you get the right adapter ring). I have them hooked up to an Alpine 4-channel amp, so each speaker gets 50 watts RMS. They can really pump out the mid- bass and the mid range is very good--vocals sound very clear and clean. However, I am disappointed with the tweeters, as they are very overpowering, so much that at normal listening levels they were really hurting my ears. I had to use my head unit's equalizer to turn down all frequencies above 5KHz by about 3dB. However, after this tweak, the tweeters do sound good and provide excellent detail to the music. Just be warned that if you do not have a way of turning down treble frequencies on your source unit, you may find these speakers way too "bright."

Holtz from Cincinnati, OH on 3/14/2011

After intense browsing for weeks and weeks I decided to go with the polk db651 for a few simple reasons. 1.) Decibel sensitivity is 92dB (no amplifier required) 2.) Marine Certified (extremely important in a Jeep) and... 3.) Price!$! (with FREE installation gear you can't beat the price.) I read countless reviews and spec sheets and received mixed signals as to whether 6.5" speakers would actually fit into a soundbar w/out cutting or drilling. With the spacer/adapter bracket provided all you have to do is cut a bit of the cloth covering to make room for the adapter ring. Once this is done you can take the bracket and line up the holes on the inside with the holes already drilled into the soundbar that were used to secure the stock 5.25" speakers. Once you have secured the bracket to the soundbar all you have to do is connect the female and males ends from the speaker to the housing in the soundbar then screw the speaker into the bracket and you're finished! I awarded this speaker with 4 stars for sound quality with an additional star for make, look and features. When compared to the stock speakers the Polk blew them out of the water. I can't speak for all 6.5" speakers but I can say that these trump big names such as MTX, Sony Xplode, Kenwood and Pioneer. Keep in mind that there are indeed speakers that top these Polks any day but not if your spending less than $150 for a pair of mid-range speakers.

I installed these speakers in my 2006 VW Passat with the factory head. They sound great! I have had them installed for about 2 weeks now so I can't give a review on how long they will last. I don't need a lot of bass and these give me plenty. I am sure when I get around to replacing the factory head (with more power) they will sound even better. I was a little disappointed with crutchfield's instructions. I would only give them 3.5 out of 5. I have purchased from them in the past and the installation instructions have always been top notch. The instructions got my door panels off but they neglected to include instructions for disconnecting several of the door controller connectors. Also the pictures were not as detailed as in the past. They told me these speakers would not fit in my rear doors. They fit better in the rear doors than they did in the front doors. The front doors required a bit a custom mounting (which I was aware of). These simply fit right into place in the rear doors. I'm glad I took the gamble.

This is my second pair in a 2001 Chevy Silverado Extended Cab 4 door. They say that you have to purchase the short db651S for the front, do not believe it. The db651 fit perfectly. They are incredible! I absolutely love Polk's sound as well. Had the front rocking with the factory head unit for a couple of years. I recently just bought a second pair for the rear. The rear doors call for 4x6, plate, or 4" with adapter. It was SO easy to cut a small amout of 18ga. steel from the top and bottom of the hole (these require a 5" hole, the rest is overlap), drilled my own holes and used steel threading screws AND the little nut clips. They sound INCREDIBLE! My truck blows me away now! I also added the Kenwood KDC-HD545U! Also HIGHLY recommend. Plenty of crystal clear MOSFET power to pump all 4 and blow you away! I probably won't even add a subwoofer under the rear seat now. No need to. They push rock, metal, ska, techno, everything I can throw at them from my iPhone, iPod, thumb drive, CD, or the built in HD tuner. Get these bad boys!

First, appreciated that the second pair was half price. The instructions that were sent for son's 2003 Toyota Matrix were very helpful. The wire harnesses that also were sent made it much easier. Had to improvise on a couple of minor things but not really an issue. Took some time on the first speaker but after that the whole process went pretty fast. As for the speakers, they were a huge improvement over the factory speakers. They sound much better with great clarity and depth. I read some reviews about bass not being that great but in my son's car its more than enough. We really see no reason to have an amplifier for these as the Kenwood stereo unit my son got seems to do the job just fine. He's very happy with these Polks!

I bought these per the recommendation of the Crutchfield salesman. They had a real low bass frequency spec and they really do put out the bass. I replaced all four factory drivers in a 2000 Volkswagen Passat (w/ monsoon), leaving the factory tweeters in tact. They are a great replacement speaker that sound much better than factory. Installation took some cutting of the metal speaker openings in order for the spring clip to fit. The plastic mounting ring that comes with the kit for this car doesn't work that well. I hope nothing loosens up and starts to rattle. The Polk adaptor ring saved the day. Lastly, I am very disappointed with the size of the speaker itself. The actual speaker is closer to 5 1/4" than 6.5"...but the sound is very good and still worth it.

Installed two pair in my 2005 Prius wow what a difference! They get better with use, a little break in period helps one appreciate the full sound that these rascals will produce. These db651's have exceptional depth for such a small speaker offering great clarity and have a smooth not brittle high end. This is sound you can live with for a long time. Installation was moderately easy once I figured out to mount the Polk speakers on top of the existing factory speaker. I just cut out the factory woofer cone, clipped the voice coil wires and the six plastic speaker supports and pulled out the speaker. The Polks then fit perfectly on top of the existing speaker frame. Wiring was a breeze with the Toyota wiring harness. The Crutchfield advisor guide does not recommend this speaker for my model car. It should start as I am truly pleased with my new addition and you will be too!

I chose the db651 speakers for the rear and the db6501 for the front. Although Crutchfield had noted these speakers as not fitting, I took a chance and purchased them anyway. Install was a breeze. No need for the adapter bracket. The holes were off just by a tiny bit from the oem. Lots of room on top and below the speaker. The sound is crisp and clean. I can here so much more detail in my music. Although the sound is good from the head unit at 14 watts RMS, Be sure to amp these to make them really come alive. I added Pioneer's 50 watt RMS amp and the traformation is fantastic. The bass is fine without a sub in my opinion.

After a couple of years of use I added a JBL MA6004 Marine Amp (60 w x 4) to the JBL MR17 receiver and what a difference. Chose this amp as it matched the receiver and it was the 60 w rating of the speakers. Volume is the same now at setting 9 as it was at 30 with no distortion and better bass. Very pleased and would highly recommend adding an amp. Running them in a boat BTW. Upgraded rating to a five based on the improved sound with the amp. Seems durable as I've had them for two years in the elements and pounding of a boat.

I bought these speakers for my Toyota Solara convertible which had the factory stereo with the JBLs. The front doors have JBL 6.75"speakers and a 1" tweeters, and the rear side panels have a JBL 3.5" speaker (midrange). I planned on replacing them all with these Polk db651 speakers. After taking out the little rear speakers and installing the Polks, I thought there was a huge improvement over the 3.5" speakers, but there was not much bass even when turning up the bass and volume. The front JBL speakers had an incredible amount of bass when compared to the Polks. Since the JBLs are only 6.75", which are not much bigger than the Polks, there must be some reason why the Polks don't produce much bass. I thought it was because the actual cone size of the Polks is closer to 5" from edge to edge. I decided not to replace the front JBLs but to leave them in since they sounded so much better bass-wise than the Polks. The Polks do have a better midrange than the JBLs, and do seem to need more power to get them to produce the same level of sound than the front JBLs. They don't produce much bass at all, and not because of the Solara body enclosure It is probably because of the polymer/mylar type material that does not resonate bass frequencies as good as paper does. JBL uses paper. I have some old JBL L36s and they have 10" paper cone woofers and they sound incredible! In the case of speakers and paper vs. plastic, paper wins!

These are some of the best speakers I have ever heard, period. A couple reviews say these speakers aren't better than stock and have no bass. I have to question what they've done with their install because there is nothing further from the truth. I ran these solely off of my Alpine CDA-105 head unit for several days just to see how they sounded and they were terrific. Today I installed the Alpine Power Pack "mini" amp and they sound incredible. Every bit as warm and full as the stock speakers, but with amazing clarity and great bass response. In fact these things can thump pretty good. I've been a Crutchfield customer for 17 years and never once have I not been satisfied. Everyone I've dealt with has been nothing short of professional. BIG shout out to Marie here! She listened intently to my questions and treated me like a friend. She really cared about helping me find the perfect speaker for what I wanted to do. We actually agreed that a Pioneer would be the best choice for me, but thanks to the review of another member who also owns a Chevy Colorado, I decided to give these a shot. So glad I did! Thanks Polk, Crutchfield and Marie! Buy these. You will not regret it.

Bought 2 pairs of these speakers after reading tons of reviews about them...95% seemed positive and for a good reason. then crutchfield put them on sale...decision made...these speakers sound great for the price i paid. i will have to agree with some previous posts...the bass is not as deep as i expected, the factory speakers in my '02 CRV were a little deeper than these, but the Polks sound much, much better. i didnt expect thunderous bass from some 2-way 6.5s, but maybe they'll get a little deeper when they break in. but then again, this result may differ depending on the vehicle application. on my JVC receiver the factory speakers would distort at about 20 on the volume knob, the polks have gone past 30 without any distortion/loss of sound quality...that was as loud as i wanted to go before they break in fully. the highs are perfect, the mids are great and the lows are ample. the overall sound quality is amazing. overall, i am extremely glad i made the choice. you wont be disappointed with the shallow mounts if you application requires them, like mine did. these things are loud and i fully intend on hooking my Rockford amp up to them to give them the power that they want...crutchfields customer service is the best, i ran into a few snags while installing these and called customer service. the tech support guy, shawn (sean?), knew exactly how to get me back on track. thanks crutchfield.

I recently purchased these to upgrade my Chevy Colorado's terrible stock system. My plan was to pair these (rear) and a pair of db 6501 components (front) with a Kenwood Excelon KDC-X794. My plan was to use deck power only and eventually add a sub. Well let me tell you, these things paired with the 6501s are so awesome I am no longer in such a rush to add the sub. No kidding, and remember I'm only using deck power. What I first noticed upon installing these speakers was incredibly smooth sound. Very silky highs, great definition and superb balance up and down the spectrum. Flat eq was tremendous, but when I engaged the bass boost in the Kenwood I heard more low end than I ever expected out of any 6.5" speaker driven with such relatively little power. I run the db crossovers at neutral tweeter level, added just a little high end in the head unit and bingo: sonic nirvana.I will still move forward with my sub plans, but fear not: these speakers, with a good head unit, are just fantasitc and at a price that cannot be beat. They are the perfect and a very affordable complement to components up front. I found myself driving around today just so I could enjoy the sound quality.

And to think I almost skipped on these because of a few bad reviews about bass response. Must have been either the application or install because these things sound amazing. I replaced the factory door speakers in my Ridgeline with these and couldn't be happier. Highs are clean and crisp not too sharp, vocals and mids are clean and clear(I can actually hear all of the music now) and the bass response is definatley there. Im running these off of my factory head unit and can just keep turing up the volume. Never cracks, distorts or sounds laboring. The only thing I noticed that I didn't like was the soldering job on the speaker connections. Weak and flimsy but I would reccomend these to anyone. I installed 2 sets of these in a Ridgeline running off of the factory HU. I liked them enough to install 2 sets in my Civic. They are powered by an amp in the Civic and WOW does that wake these things up. These are very clean and clear and would reccomend them to anyone whether they were going to put them on an amp or just run them with a HU. Needless to say the Ridgeline is now getting an amp.

I'll start by saying that the source (car stereo) really does matter. If you don't have a good deck, you will be missing out on the potential of these speakers. Prior to a cd deck upgrade, I was unimpressed with the polks. With an entry level clarion, the polks sounded veiled with no midbass. They were high passed at about 100 hz, but nothing suggests that bass was a strong point. That's not to say that they weren't better than the stock bose speakers, because they were. But that was largely because the bose sounded pretty bad. Enter a mid-upper eclipse deck and the difference is night and day. The change in the deck has made these polks come alive. The polks no longer have that veiled sound and the highs, which were already decent with the clarion, sound even better. The midbass has improved somewhat, but is definitely not as powerful as my prior set of components (a very underrated set btw). I was looking to change the polks when I changed the deck, but decided not to. All I can say is that I am glad I did not because they are impressive with a good deck and power. Prior to the deck upgrade, I would have rated these 2-3 stars. Yes, they do have some shortcomings, but for the price, they are a great value. The only reason why they are 4 stars is because I have heard better, albeit at a slighty higher price point. If you do pick these up, do yourself a favor and make sure you pair it up with a good source and decent power.

Sounds great but didn't last long

ServinMN from St. Paul, MN on 10/23/2009

I purchased these speakers along with the matching 6x9's deck and jl audio amp for 6x9's. Installed all these in my boat last summer. Both pairs sounded excellent until this fall. One of the 6.5's started crackling and froze up. It is out of warranty. And I'm out of $100 bucks. Next time I will have to buy something without a voice coil that isn't exposed to the elements. I'm sure all the moisture corroded the coil on the woofer, tweeter still works fine. I did enjoy the speakers but they barley lasted over one year.

Polk db651

Namsag from Appleton, WI on 10/19/2009

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have a 2005 Jeep Wrangler. It comes with a factory sub-woofer. I added Polk db521's in the dash with the necessary adaptor plate. They sound surprisingly great with the factory head unit by the way. I then bought a Kenwood KDC-X493 head unit. Major improvement over the stock head unit and at a great price. At this point I still had the original speakers in the sound bar. This combination is actually amazingly impressive. Now to get to the Polk db651 speakers. I bought these instead of the shallow (db651s) mount because of the adjustable tweeters and the fact that they are half the cost. They mounted very nicely in the factory sound-bar. You do not need the shallow mounts these have plenty of room. All I had to do was drill four new holes in the sound-bar plastic. They fit perfectly flush on the outside and it really couldn't be any easier. Make sure you call in your order if you want the free wiring adaptor as the internet will tell you these will not fit the sound-bar. The sound is amazing for the size. Way better than the stock speakers that were in there. I do mean way better. I am hearing sounds that did not exist before. I'm not really sure how much bass they provide on their own as I have the factory sub. They do have significantly more bass than stock though. Much cleaner highs and noticeable improvements in mids. These can take far more volume than my stock speakers that were in there. I highly recommend these for anyone considering the upgrade.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got these to upgrade my stock speakers in an '06 Nissan Frontier. Nice upgrade to muddy stock speakers. You can actually hear some clarity to the music. I have these connected to a 50W head unit and they are PLENTY loud - you can't turn the volume up all the way. Base is a little lacking, but that may improve as the speakers "break in" I think those who give these bad ratings are expecting some miracles from speakers that cost under $100 / pr. You are not going to get concert hall sound from a 6.5 inch speaker out of the door of your vehicle. If you want amazing sound pay the big bucks for an amp and high end speakers. But for the average Joe, these are a nice upgrade. Installation was a bit of a hassle - the mounting bracket holes didn't match up so had to be drilled out to fit. Also the instructions are very vague in some parts. Gives good info on getting the door apart, but then just gives you an "install the speakers" no info on wire colors for +/-, but a quick phone call to Crutchfield and they had the answers for me. One more thing - for those who said they can install these in an hour must be living in a time warp. I am a fairly handly person and it took me a good afternoon to get 4 speakers installed.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Pros: Fantastic sounding speaker! I'm sure there are better sounding speakers, but I doubt you will find one that is a better value. I was looking for a middle of the road speaker for my used 2004 Nissan Frontier, that I drive maybe 3 times a week, so I bought these (saved 10 -20 bucks at Crutchfield Outlet). I want to drive it all the time now. These speakers are the main reason why. I paired these with the db 501's in the rear and a Clarion receiver. No amplification or sub. I have owned many, many aftermarket speakers. I was floored at how good they sounded, for what I payed. Make sure you have some female spade type connectors on hand for easier installation. Cons: None, other than I really wish these would have fit in the back doors too. That's how good they are.

I first bought 2 pairs of these about 3 years ago for an old Cherokee. Even at the original price & coupled to a pretty inexpensive Dual head unit, I thought they were a decent deal & they sounded great. Since then, I've recommended them to some friends with boats due to their good sound, reasonable price, and marine certification. I don't think you can go wrong with these speakers, & now that I've come back to review them, they are on sale! I might have to pick up a spare pair or two for later :)

these guys replaced the OEM speakers in my BBQ island that had started to rust. they sound great paired with a new Sony CDX-M30 receiver. installation was tedious since i was cramped for space inside the island, which is not the fault of the speakers. i attached the speakers to the BBQ island wall backer board, using self tapping screws from the outside inward. Did not need any of the adapter rings. they lack in bass response, which is understandable. I recommend pairing with a subwoofer.

I have noticed that they seem to have a break-in period of a week or so of use.... My current purchase was 2 pairs for my Honda Civic and they sound great on top of my 8" Rockford P1 Sub. Great price for a quality speaker. Would highly recommend from my experience with them.

These were a very good drop in replacement for the badly degraded OEM speakers in the doors of our truck. My only complaint, is the upturned rim of the speaker frame made the OEM mount screws a little tricky to reuse and none of the smaller headed screws in the kit were the correct size or length.

Excellent speakers. First of all, if you're just planning on changing your OEM speakers out and not changing to a deck that is of value of atleast 2oo bucks, then dont change your speakers, or else you'll get a review like the last guy who rated them a 3star. First I changed out my deck to an Eclipse 5030. This deck made the stock speakers sound fairly decent, however when I changed out all of the speakers with these polks, the sound was amazing. the volume was excellent. I think someone complained about the bass not being enough... buy a subwoofer. Soon, once I find a grommet in my firewall, I will be installing two 10" kickers in the rear. that oughta do it. The reason I rate them as a 4 right now is because I dont have them amped out. so they still have a problem competing against that civic driver with four 12" subs squished into his trunk and 20 billion speakers amped out to 200 watts each in the car... dont forget the underglow

Huge Improvement

Carpalsc from Lubbock, Tx on 6/26/2009

I installed a pair of these in the front doors of my 2004 Pontiac Vibe. They fit well with the included hardware after I drilled new holes for mounting them. However, I do have one issue with the speakers when it comes to installing them. One of the posts on the back used to connect it to your radio is too close to a rather large capacitor. This makes attaching that lead to the speaker rather difficult. They are definitely a huge improvement over the paper cone original ones. They seem well built and should hold up fairly well over several years. Sonically these speakers mainly shine in the highs and mids. The tweeters can put out more treble than I could ever want or need. The lows are adequate enough, but you can't expect too much from a 6" speaker. Overall these are a great pair of durable speakers I wouldn't hesitate to recommend.

I bought these 6 1/2's to replace my Polk 5 1/4's midship in my 20' mariah. The improvement was phenomenal. I am still running two 5 1/4's aft along with a Kenwood 10" sub & amp under the rear seat with a JBL marine amp pushing my mid's and highs from a Kenwood Marine head unit and, for what I paid for this entire system, sounds like I spent thousands. This is the clearest sound I've heard at high and low volume levels from a marine set-up. I'll be moving the Polk 5 1/4's to the bow to round out my system and it will be sure to impress! Thanks

I got these speakers to replace the factory sound pod speakers in my 2006 Jeep Wrangler. The 6-1/2 do fit into the factory 5-1/4 locations but have to be top mounted and the mounting holes have to be adjusted slightly. The 5-1/4 fit just like the factory ones and you can re-use the factory grill. They sound great and hopefully will last much longer in the Jeep because they are marine certified.

I have a 1998 camry and install these was kinda a pain but worth it. You have to redrill a couple holes but its not that bad its worth it to me. I bought 2 pairs of db651 speakers to fit my 08 Toyota Yaris Liftback. Factory speakers are 6 1/2" front and 5 1/4" rear, Crutchfield said these will not fit because the tweeters will stick out too far to put the front door panels back on, NOT true. Just use the thin plastic adaptor rings that come from Polk with the speakers and they fit just fine, plenty of room to clear the magnet with the window and a good 1 1/2" between the tweeter and the front door panel speaker grills. These speakers are so amazing, huge improvement over stock. I've had these before, well the db571 models which are 5"x7" to fit in my 04 Ford F150 and I loved them so much I knew I had to buy Polks again for my Yaris, I was prepared to do whatever it took to put them in, but they fit perfectly. I took a chance and I'm so glad. The speakers have very clear highs, very natural mids and the bass is pretty decent with the factory head unit. I love Crutchfield, the advisors on the phone are so helpful and nice, the pricing, the selection, if you don't like what you bought they'll swap it for something you do like, they really want you to be happy. I've been a customer since the early 90's, thank you to everyone at Crutchfield.

Excellent Entry-Level 6.5

tower from Houston, TX on 11/21/2008

All-in-all, these are my favorite 6.5"s in this price bracket. They sound pretty clear, can get pretty loud before distorting, are thin enough for most door applications, and are even marine certified. I've used these things in everything from GM trucks to golf carts. The "gun-metal" finish and spoke grille make them look cool as well. The only downside to them is the inability to handle much amplification, but you generally have to spend a little more for speakers designed for an amp.

Ive got four of these in my 86 crx, and they are great. The thick rubber allows for lots of bass for the size. I have gone through lots of 6 1/2" speakers, and so far these are the best ive seen unless you want to spend hundreds of dollars. The adjustable tweeter is a nice feature if your speaker is not positioned in a desireable location. Also you dont necessarily need an amplifier as long as you make good decisions when selecting a stereo. i have all four powered by a 21 watt stereo. ive turned it up to the point where my ears cant take it any louder with no signs of distortion. but if you have a low powered stereo, then you will need an amplifier. Enjoy!

I got a pair of db651 speakers for the rear, and a pair of db651s slimline speakers for the front of my new Hyundai Elantra. I paired with a JVC head with 20 watts RMS to each channel. I installed the head first, and had a chance to listen to the factory speakers. The factory speakers lacked definition and clarity, as I would have expected for a single paper cone with no tweeter. The polk's were a major upgrade to the factory setup, and brought much more sparkle, resolution and depth to the music. Holding the Polk's in my hand and comparing to the speakers removed was very interesting. The build was incomparably more solid, with much larger magnets, metal instead of plastic for the housing, and a rugged speaker cone and surround. I'm very pleased with the sound, and taking into consideration the price, these speakers are a five star value. The installation was relatively uneventful, thanks to the instructions and free accessories.

These are your basic under $100.00 2-way speakers.. dont expect any booming bass as they are not built for it. The highs are good but a crossover would greatly benefit these speaker. I have always been a fan of Polk, and have owned Polk home audio. When it was time to upgrade my new ride, all my research brought me back to the db651 coax. The specs were great, and with the second pair being half price, it was a no brainer. I have a set in each of my Grand Cherokee's doors, running off the factory cd player, and the supplied wiring harness made installation a breeze. Having done custom installs in the past, I was ready to "plug-n-play" an be done with it. The bass compared to the factory speakers is by far much smoother, and the response is much flatter, although not necessarily louder. The top end is vastly improved, though. My musical selections range from Rush, Van Halen, and Styx to Tool, Killswitch Engage and even Public Enemy. So far, they have all sounded remarkably better. Now, just need to add a small sub/amp combo and aftermarket h/u. Great job Crutchfield, we'll be doing business again!

You will need to fabricate plywood mounts (7" square 3/4" plywood trimmed down to mount flush, with 5" center holes), and use the included rings to get the proper door depth. Smooth bass response with some oomph for a 6.5" coaxial and nicely detailed tweeter output, but needs a little EQ cut in the 400-2000Hz range. Features

Dynamic Balance: Dynamic Balance is a proprietary Polk Audio technology using laser imaging to determine what combination of speaker materials create the least amount of resonance. Eliminating resonance in speakers results in a wide, smooth response and low distortion.

Woofer Cones: Each speaker features a Dynamic Balance polymer/mica composite mineral-filled cone. The cones are stiff and lightweight for big sound and low distortion.

Butyl Rubber Surrounds: For a smoother response and improved durability, the woofers use butyl rubber surrounds.

Kapton Voice Coil Former: The low-mass Kapton Voice Coil former is lightweight for high sound output. Kapton's high melting temperature (725°F) ensures high power handling and longer reliability.

Silk/Polymer Composite Tweeters: The 3/4" liquid-cooled, silk/polymer composite tweeters provide clear, detailed highs. The tweeters use neodymium magnets.

Pivoting Tweeter: The tweeter pivots, allowing you to to aim it toward your listening position for better imaging.

2-way Crossover Network: The built-in 2-way crossover network sends the appropriate frequencies to each driver for cleaner sound and better imaging.

Mounting Rings: Without using the included adapter brackets the DB651 fits many factory 6-3/4" applications. While they will also fit standard 6-1/2 speaker openings, they do not use the industry standard bolt pattern. To fit most 6-1/2 locations, and additional 6-3/4 locations, the included adapter brackets must be installed. The brackets add 0.3" to the speakers' mounting height and subtract 0.3" from the mounting depth.

Grilles: Strong ABS plastic grilles are included. These computer optimized grilles are based on exclusive MOMO designs.

Marine Certification: Polk speakers are marine certified, making them a good choice for boats in fresh water, convertibles, motorcycles, ATVs, and other applications where the speaker might get wet. Because they have coated steel baskets and the terminals and crossover components are not covered, we do not recommend using them in salt water environments.

Thanks for your question. These are 4 ohm. You can find this information on the main product page "Details" tab under "Specifications". Hope this helps.[ Kenny  Apr 17, 2017 ]  Staff
These are "Marine" certified according to the Polk website. I have used them for the last 6 years in my boat and they still sound great! [ Mark  May 12, 2017 ]
Thanks for your question. I'm sorry, no, these speakers are not rated for marine use. On the Crutchfield website if you just type "Marine" in the search box you will see a great selection of marine rated items. Hope this helps.[ Kenny  Feb 18, 2017 ]  Staff
The Polk db651 speakers have a mounting height of 0.882". The mounting height measures how tall the speaker is once its secured to the mounting surface. I hope that helps![ Larry  Nov 11, 2016 ]  Staff
They had a good, crisp sound when I installed and used the factory head unit to power them. My only complaint with these was a lack of bass.[ daniel  Sep 07, 2016 ]
Yes it will they are great speakers[ Donald  Sep 06, 2016 ]
I saw a solid increase in output while using the factory stereo/receiver.[ gareth  Sep 06, 2016 ]
Think the total mounting depth is like 2.5 inches so you should have plenty of room on your boat![ Nicholas  Aug 04, 2016 ]
I believe 4 inches will provide enough room, but not much to spare. My speakers are mounted in Audioformz tube housings, so I didn't really have to worry about clearance, but as I recall, they're probably 3-4" deep.[ Douglas  Aug 02, 2016 ]
According to the manual, it's 5". The distance across the diameter of the speaker from screw hole to screw hole is 6 1/4 ".[ John  May 24, 2015 ]
THis went in my 2000 camaro So I dont remember the exact size. It fit fine but the mounting holes in the car were a bit diffetent.[ STAN  May 24, 2015 ]
The diameter of the magnet is 3 1/8" per my measurement. Diagram on box states 3 3/16", so you might go with that measurement to be safe. It protrudes about 2 1/16" from the rear surface of the mounting flange (i.e. required clearence depth.) [ VARON  May 20, 2015 ]
Not sure. Sorry they're mounted I did eyes fairing or my Harley.[ DENNIS M  May 19, 2015 ]
No, by my own experience you won't get the full potential of this speakers or any other speakers without an Amp. Head units are not design to move this type of speakers that's why you need an Amp.[ ANTONIO  Apr 21, 2014 ]
I would have to say no... I have mine attached to the Alpine Inline Amp KTP-445 which is a phenomenal little amp that I truly recommend... now, I do drive a soft top jeep so there is very little capability of feeling the type of midbass you are looking for but with that said I can guarantee you that you wont get what you are looking for without the proper power to the speaker.[ RYAN P  Mar 02, 2014 ]
Well i have a 2013 wrx hatchback and a pioneer head unit with no amp going to them as well. The factory speakers appeared to have a little more bass but i think it was because the factories had a piece of foam that went between them and the plastic door covering. By the time i installed the polks with the additional spacers that were required for the screw holes there was no room for foam. Dont get me wrong im very happy with them and they do have some good mid bass for their size im just used to the bose factory door speakers that were in my last vehicle which was a chevy diesel silverado. That sytem with a sub and amp added was great. But i have fixed the lack of bass in the doors with a Sound Ordinance B-8P. Best money ive ever spent. I cant believe that something with 80 watts can have that much bass. Its actually cheaper right now on crutchfield than when i bought it. It has its own built in amp so no need for additional amp space. Check it out. The polks also have a great clear, clean sound to them compared to the muddled factory speakers. It really depends on your vehicles doors. If your doors are solid, you would probably get more bass out of the polks than i am. The wrx doesnt have very solid doors. They are kind of hollow and flimsy. Hope i helped!![ JEFFREY S  Feb 26, 2014 ]
I think you will be happy with them I use a pioneer head unit and they sound good.I also hook an iPod to mine and they take a lot of bass but it seems like you have to turn the sound up more than I did with my stock speakers hope this helps i love the speakers work great[ KEVIN MICHAEL  Feb 24, 2014 ]
Any upgrade from stock speakers will sound better. I used the polks in my front doors and some kenwoods in te rear doors. The polks do not have as much bass as the kenwoods. I added a powered sub and now have freat high mid and low sound[ KEVIN E  Feb 24, 2014 ]
Yes these will provide plenty of mids with an aftermarket head unit[ CAMDEN  Feb 24, 2014 ]
I first installed these speakers on my Nissan Frontier with the factory radio and the sound was impressive. The base and mid-range required little equalizer adjustments. I would definitely recommend these speakers.[ GUILLERMO  Feb 24, 2014 ]
Joe,I love my speakers. They are powered by a GM Bose system, which has a factory amp. They are very efficient and midrange is excellent. Sound better than the "Bose" speakers.[ MICHAEL J J  Feb 24, 2014 ]
I have the Polk db651 in a 08 Chevrolet 2500 with factory head unit and they sound great but would sound way better with a aftermarket head unit.[ MICHAEL  Feb 24, 2014 ]
No the Polk have almost no bass which I like, best thing is to run polks and get a kicker bass station.[ JOSHUA  Feb 24, 2014 ]
