Enjoy your music even more

Go ahead, circle the parking lot till your favorite song is over. Polk Audio's DXi Series speakers will make you want to hit "repeat" so you can hear it all over again. Polk uses a high-tech approach and ideal materials to give your tunes an exciting new edge.

Precision woofers showcase your music

Polk's DXi6501 component speaker system features 6-1/2" polymer composite cones that are lightweight and stiff, so they can create a big sound with minimal distortion. Polk analyzes their drivers in motion to ensure that cone movement is even and precise. Polk also uses laser imaging to craft woofer cones that are perfectly balanced to resist distortion-causing resonances.

Silk/polymer dome tweeters broadcast sweet sound

Rest assured, you'll hear every detail of your most enthralling musical moments. Each 1" silk/polymer dome tweeter brings out the high-frequency highlights in your music, and a proprietary magnetic liquid cools the tweeters so you'll get clear sound and excellent long-term performance. You can set your own stage — surface- or flush-mount the tweeters with the included swivel-mount cups, and aim the tweeters towards your ears so you can really enjoy the show.

External crossovers for stand-out detail

Polk includes high-quality crossover networks that create a smooth transition between woofer and tweeter, so you'll hear accurate, balanced performance from this system. From an intensely quiet acoustic pluck to the most exhilarating electric solo, it'll be a very entertaining ride.

Installation note: You'll need a pair of our universal backstraps to install the tweeters in the factory locations.

Great value!

Steve from O Fallon, MO on 1/16/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Polks prove to be a great value. I have them installed in Toyota Tundra with the tweets mounted in the dash where the original factory speakers were. With 75 watts per channels from a Diamond amp driving them, they do a really good job. The high end is crisp and clean with excellent imaging even with the tweets aimed at my windshield. In order to really get the full impact, they need to be backed up by a good sub-woofer. While the bass response was solid, it just did not have enough to give a deep rich sound without some help. If you elect to go with baffles in the door to protect these, be cautious. I had to re-open the door to port the baffle in order to keep it from creating an ugly muffled noise at higher volumes. Once the back sides of the baffle were trimmed, problem solved. All in all, I am very happy with these.

Pros: Clean, crisp, strong.

Cons: Size makes using baffles a bit more challenging than normal.

Sound great but when temps hit the 20 degree mark they have NO bass until the car warms up. Never heard of that before.

Cons: Below 20 they have to warm up to have any bass

These are a big upgrade from the factory speakers in our 98' 4runner. We are running them off an Alpine deck, paired with Polk DB652 coaxials in the rear, and overall the sound is great. Warm and clear, with decent bass. I'm sure they would sound even better running on an amp with proper RMS power, but we are happy nonetheless. Definitely worth the money. The install was not as easy as they made it out to be, but I got it done.

Pros: Look great, sound great.

A great replacement for my Ford Fusion OEM speakers.

Mark from Cary, NC on 11/9/2016

2005 Pontiac Vibe
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased these to replace the front OEM speakers in my 2015 Ford Fusion with the 6 speaker Sync system. My goal was to improve sound quality not quantity. I wanted better sound. I was not trying to impress the teenager across the street or piss of my neighbors. While these are less efficient than the OEM speakers, they still sound soooo much better thank the OEM speakers. Everything is a lot tighter and crisper. These are brighter than the OEM speakers but setting the crossover to -3db seemed to do the trick. I was hoping to directly replace the OEM tweeter with the Polk tweeter but the Polk one is just a hair larger and would not fit it behind the grill where the OEM tweeter was. I had to surface mount it where the OEM tweeter was. I hope to flush mount it later but I need to build my courage up before cutting holes in my door panels. I attached the crossover box with double sided tape to a cavity inside the panel. I paired these up with a pair of Polk DXi651s for the rear. I am very happy with my car's new sound.

Pros: Tight sound and crisp highs.

Cons: Less efficient than the OEM speaker but more efficient than other replacement speakers.

Good Speakers

George from Norcross, GA on 10/31/2016

2002 Toyota Sequoia
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Sound is as good as expected for Polk, the speaker adapters for the front doors were marginal on fit, but the tweeters required some very creative work for installation in my 2002 Sequoia. By volume, the tweeters are twice as large as the stock units. Capable of installation using the surface mount assembly, but the stock brackets had to be "shaped". There's probably not a large enough market, but including new tweeter covers (black) would have made the installation flawless.

Pros: Solid, balanced sound, installed these in front and the 651s' in the rear

Cons: Installation (tweeters) in my Toyota required some finesse

A meager investment with large returns.

Good detail. Rugged construction. Tons of extra mounting supplies. Running 100w rms to each of them, and they get as loud as I want while still sounding good. Tweeters are very good! Mid drivers are ok.

Pros: Pretty good speakers for the price

Cons: Hard to get the tweeters out of the swivel mount they come in. I used some big channel locks.

Great speaker

Derek from Butler, PA on 9/29/2016

2006 Toyota Tacoma
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The highs and mids come in very clear which is what these speakers are meant for, they're mid range. As for bass it was a bit lacking but that might be because I'm running off a $150 HU and no amp so they're probably under powered. They aren't broken in yet either as I've only had them for a day. With all that said though the installation was a breeze, watched a few YouTube videos too, and the construction was solid! Overal I'm happy with the speakers and will continue to use crutchfield and Polk audio.

Pros: Solid construction Easy installation Mids and highs are very clear

Cons: Lacking in bass but under powering them and bass isn't their intended purpose

Front Row Center Everytime

Max Effort from Hilliard, OH on 9/11/2016

2016 Dodge Grand Caravan

As a previous reviewer indicated, these speakers strong suit is definitely tone. Tonality to be exact. Smooth and balanced sound is what you can expect when the system is put together "correctly". By that I mean; a proper amplifier, mid to upper level head unit and of course a good subwoofer. For me, that meant tearing out the old factory head unit, 4 OEM speakers and installing extensive sound deadening material. I realize not everyone would do this extra step but trust me, it pays big dividends down the road. Then came a Pioneer DEH-80PRS head unit, JL Audio 300/4 amp and a Memphis SA110P powered subwoofer. With 75 watts x 4, the JL's power is managed by the Pioneer head unit with audiophile grade DSP features and 5v preamp outputs. These Polk's have very precise imaging and a balanced tonality throughout the entire frequency range. There is a real smoothness to their sound that belies the price. The woofers hit nice and tight (especially with the HPF cutoff at 80db) and the tweeters reproduce very smooth highs without being too bright or shrill. The subwoofer controls frequencies below 80 Hz perfectly but, I have also completely attenuated those below 30 Hz for tight accurate bass. Throw on Dave Mason's "Feelin' Alright", Pink Floyd's "Money" or whatever you prefer and you're front row center every time! These speakers are definitely worth considering and at this price, they sound as good as some others 2 to 3 times more expensive.

Pros: - Smooth, balanced sound reproduction. - Great value/quality for the money. - Flexible mounting options -

Cons: Large crossover module Can play well enough to off most standard head units BUT prefers external amplification

Don't be fooled by the bad reviews

Mike S from Missouri on 5/22/2016

2013 Hyundai Elantra

As stated above, don't be fooled by the bad reviews. Most of the bad reviews are for the following reasons: A.) They just replaced stock speakers, nothing else B.) Not hooked up to any type of amp C.) Don't have an amp but have it connected to some crappy $100-$150 head unit. D.) Just don't know how to properly tune speakers. I had these in my 2013 elantra coupe with a set of DXi 651 co ax in the back paired with an older R/F p2 12" ported box sub and the speakers were connected to a KTP-445U Apline power pack/brink amp. I was blown away. In fact I've rebought the exact same system to put in my 2012 Genesis coupe. I've had professional sound guys (competition sound guys) tell me this is one of the best sounding consumer driven systems they've heard. These polks are designed to have better/crisper highs and mids while, unfortunately sacrificing some lows. They are they perfect balance between crisp/clean high ends with good drive (not distorted) from the sub. If you are looking to just replace speakers and not have them amped with a conventional amp or power pack amp or something better than a run of the mill aftermakret head unit then these are probably not going to be for you. You're better off with some Apline type-s's were the high ends aren't really all that great but provide a much better low end. However, pair them with a good amp and/or sub and you won't find a better combination of speaker set up.

Pros: Can't find a better speaker combination set up when paired with an external (non- head unit) amp and/or subwoofer

Cons: Probably sound too tinty or too much treble if just replacing speakers or only hooking them up to a run of the mill head unit.

Mediocre at best

As another reviewer stated the tweeter has to much vocals and the driver has very little vocal just not that balanced. I guess I'll leave Polk car audio alone and only buy their home audio products. I'll be getting an RMA number and return them. I guess I'm spoiled from higher end Kicker 6.5" components.

Pros: Nice looking Easy to install. Crossover is small.

Cons: Tweeter and driver not balanced.

Great Components

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just installed these speakers to replace my Alpine 6.5" co axials that were blown. These things can take some power, and stay crystal clear. I would recommend these to a friend or family member in a heart beat. Putting the tweeters on the dash angled towards the center of the vehicle and slightly up towards the head makes the highs bright and clear. The easy adjustable 9 db swing on the passive crossover makes it even easier to adjust the sound from left to right. Great gear.

Pros: Great sound and clarity, and still clear at higher volumes

Cons: none so far.

A tough install in my 07 pony , but with a little ingenuity and creativity nice install , put 6" in 8" woofer location had to leave 8" grill on and cut out 6-1/2" opening in it using new grill as template . Put crossover in 4x6 speaker location using Velcro in door ,wanted to put tweeter in A-frame location but couldn't because mirror control was there, so flush mounted in spot close to raised lock push opening, worked out perfectly, sound is directly in my ear .the hardest part was thinking how to place the woofer ,total install time @ 2-3 hours both doors set crossover to 0 better to adjust from head unit control's

Pros: Much clearer sound stage

Cons: Have to use your ingenuity to fit in a mustang stock doors ,but it is possible .

Great sound

Easy install, I am getting a tinny sound from the highs. It is ran off a Kenwood excelon deck with no added amp. Iv tried adjusting it and the only way I can get that sound to go away is to turn down treble quite a bit and turn up the mid. Hoping it goes away with time or maybe with an amp install for the speakers. Other people have said the speakers need an amp to get full pormtential out of them.

Pros: Easy install, appear will built

These speakers are ok but the tweeters sound very twangy and there is alot of voice going through them .i haven't hooked them up an amp yet .but i don't think it's going to help. I should of just got the the regular speakers and not the component and used the factor tweeters .so for me it was not worth the money.

Cons: Voice sounds twangy and unnatural from teeters .also the frame on the 6.5 isn't very sturdy.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am disappointed with the tweeters. Although they are silk/poly dome tweeters, which should sound warm, they sound tinny, thin, metallic. I used two different amplifiers without any change. The first was 45 watt per channel amp. The second is a 120 watt per channel amp. Sounds the same. Tweeter sounds the same, scratchy and tinny. I've used Polk speakers for ever. Usually, they're great. Not here. Also, mounting screws weren't the right length for the woofers.

Pros: Polk. 100 watts per channel handling.

Cons: Tweeters not right sounding.

Pros: Good desing

Cons: You buy ths speaker under you own risk. If you dont have an amplifier at least 125 watts rms . Dont intent buy this speaker. I have an amplifier infinity reference 475a 75 rms watts and the speaker and this speaker has a big distortion . Bass sound as a cheap speaker may be 30. Dollar. I willing to pay for this speaker 30.00 dollar. An amplifier in Crutchfield 125 rms watts or more are very expensive. If you have money do it. Not warranty has good sound. These are pretty nice speakers, been running them for about a week. The tweeters are running off my alpine HU and the woofers are connected to a two channel amp pushing 75W. I ran the tweeters through the supplied crossover and the woofers are using the crossover on the amp. Took some time to dial in the right sound but for the money they are pretty good. Not competition winning sound but decent sound on a budget.

Pros: Affordable and nice sound.

Cons: Not very good at high power. Don't go over the recommended RMS or they won't handle it.

Upgrade well worth it

Mr. Ed from Harrisonburg. VA on 9/15/2014

Somehow I made it many years with the "Premium" factory system in my 1999 Saturn SW2. Moved up to a Pioneer basic CD receiver a year ago and it was able to reveal the deficiencies. Have a Polk 10" woofer in a custom cabinet and drive it with about 90w from an old Sony amp I picked up from Crutchfield in the early 90s. Prior to the DXi6501 upgrade I had added surface mount tweeters on the upper dash and padded them with 30 ohm series resistors. Still too bright. But it let me hear about higher tweeters - the SW2 location is into my calves. Did not want to get the tweeters too high so I settled for about 10 " up from the woofer, in the plastic in front of the fuzzy door covering with the window controls and latch. Mounted the crossovers in the door in such a way that I can reach the tweeter switch without removing too much. Stereo imaging is not like the showroom, after all I am sitting between them and they are not at ear level. Clarity and openness are vast improvement, I am hearing more details. Let my wife listen to an Il Divo CD and it brought tears to her eyes. These speakers were on sale and for the price I am very happy. Gave them 4 stars because they don't sound like much more expensive units; a great value but not amazing. This is my first experience with components with passive crossovers (I have used electronic crossovers with 3 stereo amps in other vehicles) - it is definitely better than the standard coax with a series cap.

Pros: Significant upgrade in clarity. I feel that my basic head's 20 watts are adequate (with a separate powered woofer). Usual superlative assistance from the Crutchfield team.

Cons: Tweeter mounting bracket for flush mount did not have enough tang length for my thin plastic door panels and I had to use a little gaffer tape to secure them. Door mounting crossovers means they would be hard to adjust in this vehicle, so I spent some hours with them on the bench before committing to the flat setting. Research, experience and testing meant 10 hours to get the first one in and 2 hours for the second - Saturn latches are very hard to get back in - watch for tricky swivel clips.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Sweet, clear sound. Very happy. Woofers fit perfectly, Crutchfield-supplied wiring adapter worked well. Tweeter mounting was a problem until I read somewhere to use Dynamat, that real sticky sound-deadener sheet stuff. Actually I used a cheap hardware store version, Quick Roof: very sticky. The tweeter had to mount in the door behind the existing curved grill. There was no flat mounting surface, so I cut an x-shaped slit in a piece of the mat and pushed it over the tweeter, then stuck the whole thing to the inner door panel. I used the same mat stuff to attach the crossover to the door near where I cut into the harness for the wiring. No wire splicing needed. Car has existing amp used for 2-ohm speakers, I kept it even tho these are 4-oms. Need to crank the volume up a bit (around 30 to 50%), but it gets plenty loud for me, no distortion. BTW the local car stereo shop wanted a little under $200 to install these. I also bought some Quick Roof and I slathered it all over the inside of the doors for sound deadening.

Pros: Smooth sound, not bad installation.

Cons: I can see tweeter installation being a problem for some.

2013 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Despite the claims on Crutchfield site this item does NOT fit a 2013 Wrangler Unlimited. The tweeters in this kit have a huge lip that prevents them from being placed in the factory holes in the dash, at least not without trimming the bottom and then having plastic extend beyond the dash holes around the rest of the circumference. Apparently I'm expected to disassemble the tweeter from the Polk casing and then disassemble the factory tweeter to try and use the factory screen. Probably not difficult but I expect it to fit if the site advertises it as such. My first purchase here is a HUGE disappointment. Any suggestions on kits that work out of the box? These are going back as soon as I have time to waste arranging shipping.

Crutchfield response on 7/2/2014 Our database can only check the woofer locations for fit. Tweeters are always a custom installation and only rarely will they drop right into the factory housings. The customer can definitely return the speakers and our advisors will be happy to help find something that'll work out better.

I was well pleased with this set! Once installed with an amp of equal capabilities they sounded very good! The high notes hit well and a decent amount of mid as well. Ver clear and aggressive sound! I could turn it up loud enough to the point you don't want it louder! Another great Polk product!!!

Head Turner

Billroy from Parts Unknown, SC on 6/20/2014

If your looking for a cheap setup for your vehicle then this is not it. Factory radio's suck. The ohms matter. Put in a head unit THEN listen to your factory speakers.. Sounds like crap right? Then replace the speakers keeping the same head unit. Sounds a lot better right? I have mine running off of an amp and you can hear me coming down the road.

Pros: Sounds amazing in my 2002 taco 4 wheel drive. Paired with my Fosgate P4's and amps I say it kicks butt!!!

Cons: Sounds great if you have an aftermarket head unit. Add an extra amp and you will hear sounds that you have never heard before

purchased on recommendation of Crutchfield to replace factory Toyota speakers. They don't fit existing speaker brackets which have to be used to clear window. Further, now my door panel will not snap back flush. Sound is also not really any better than the speakers I replaced. A waste of 8 hours and 3 days.

Pros: none

Cons: sound average and they do not fit standard 6 inch speaker bracket

Not a Good replacement for 2011 CTS

GlynM from Rehoboth, MA on 5/11/2014

Purchased these to replace the front door speakers in my 2011 CTS with Factory Bose system. I was hoping to get better bass response form these vs. the stock speakers. The purpose of this review is not really to knock the speakers, I'm a big fan of Polk. However, these just aren't a good replacement (and I'm guessing no 6.5" speaker would be) for the he 2011 CTS. The issue is that with this particular speaker, you have to use Crutchfield's speaker adapter plate AND the plate that comes with the speaker. the two do fit together but it's a less than ideal foundation. Secondly, and more importantly, these are 4OHM speakers and the factory are 2OHM. I questioned this with a sales rep prior to purchase and was told that there would be no appreciable difference - WRONG! The final reason why these just don't perform well against the stock speaker is that the factory Bose front door speaker is 8" in diameter (not 6.75" as many place state). After mounting the left side front, I did a left to right sound comparison and the stock speaker was louder, deeper, and richer in sound than the polk. A very disappointing result. FYI, I wasn't planning to switch out the tweeters because the stock system is pre-crossed at the amp and the cross-over on the polk is set at a different frequency (3k).

Pros: Good Build Quality

Cons: Didn't work out for my application.

Decent if properly powered

Rolls from Wichita, KS on 3/30/2014

I've had these installed in my new Focus for about three months. I find that the highs are way to harsh for my listening preferences, and the bass is only moderate. I am not a certified installer, but I definitely know what I'm doing, as I install aviation systems and car systems regularly. I installed these myself, so the sound quality didn't suffer from the install. The speakers and outboard crossovers definitely feel of high quality, better than most in this price range. Unfortunately, that's about where the good stuff ends. I've hooked up multiple brands (and power levels) of amplifiers to these speakers, and they only sounded "good" when I was pushing them with almost 120 watts RMS. So I suppose they can at least handle their recommended rms rating, that's good, but they still didn't sound all that great. Another reviewer claimed that they have an exorbitant (long) break-in period, and I definitely agree. It took about 30 hours of play before the bass tightened up. I wouldn't purchase these again. If your heart is set on these, then do yourself a favor and invest in a high-powered amp.

Pros: Feel of high quality speakers. Comes with versatile and good-quality mounting adapter rings.

Cons: Just about everything else

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed these in the front of my 2013 Honda Civic Si Sedan with factory nav. I will say I did not try them off the factory amplifier. Instead I ran them to a 5 channel Kicker unit. With that being said, I installed these tweeters into the factory location. I did mangle the factory tweeters to remove them to put these in the factory bracket. It worked though. I put the mid range woofer in the front doors and used foam baffles behind them to tighten up the sound. These units sound incredible. Nice crisp clean sound. I have run many brands of speakers over the years. These are right up there in quality and for the price you just cant at them. I am pleased with them. They have a little low end kick to them but certainly not boomy. If you want the low end bass you need a subwoofer setup. Ive got these set on a high pass filter at 50hz on up. The subwoofers take care of 50hz and below. It sounds fantastic on all different types of music. Country to pop and everything in between. I have no complaints. The cross overs are nice and small i mounted mine in the kick panels. Out of sight out of mind but easy access for adjustment purposes.

Pros: Great value and sound for the price.

Due to mishandling on an unrelated repair job, the front door speaker on the driver's side had developed a buzz which couldn't be repaired. The Crutchfield Catalog's timely arrival with the offer of Polk speakers on sale ensured that we would make the purchase. Wise decision as the speakers went in easily. Now, we are treated to clean sound and no distortion at either the treble or bass end of the spectrum. We are quite pleased with the speakers and will recommend them to our friends.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased these speakers as the first step in upgrading the sound system in my 2006 Sienna minivan. With my son turning 16 and in need of a car I felt I would be driving the van for the next four or five years so I decided I might as well enjoy it. My long term goal is to build a high fidelity system capable of matching the sound quality of my home stereo. The next step will be to replace the factory head unit and install amplifiers and subs. The speakers were easy to mount using Crutchfield's brackets (with some minor adjustments to the rear brackets to fit the existing mounting points. I will admit I have noticed a significant loss of bass response with the Polk speakers. However, I expected as much given their smaller size. The high-ends are amazingly crisp and the midrange response seems very accurate. Once I finish adding the other components I'll update this post.

Pros: construction, sound reproduction

Cons: None so far.

Excellent natural sounding speakers

Brent from Richland, Wa on 11/3/2013

2006 Honda Civic EX
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I upgraded to these speakers as part of a complete upgrade from the factory system in a 2006 Civic. I don't know how much of the improvement is in the speakers and how much is due to the excelon head unit and 75W/ch amp. However the system as a whole sounds sublime. I was skeptical of the specified low frequency limit but I send them the full range signal from the amp and they have no trouble accurately reproducing the tone and volume of a double bass (Edgar Meyer provides my test music). I do not have a sub and I do not feel like I need one for the music I listen to - mostly bluegrass, jazz and classical with the occasional prog rock. Midrange (guitars, male vocals...) sounds full and warm and highs are crystal clear. It sounds like the band is in the car with me, which is to say that the imaging is also excellent. These speakers had the most pronounced break-in period I have ever experienced. For a few hours they were actually shrill and painful to listen to at any decent volume. That passed and they continued to improve for another week (maybe 10 hours listening) and they have stabilized at two weeks. I can't say with certainty that this wasn't due to the amp burning in instead of the speakers since I upgraded all at once. If you want natural sounding music with accurate bass, these are perfect. If you want explosive bass that can be heard for miles you will need a sub, but would probably still want these too.

Pros: accurate bass, warm midrange and crisp clear highs. Excellent imaging.

Cons: I'm paying more for gas now that I take the long way everywhere I go.

Bass is rohbust

smooth, wide range

DaveL from Seattle, WA on 9/23/2013

Received as a gift. Very smooth, wide range for this size. Very good treble and midrange, fair, smooth bass; 6 1/2 speaker can't be expected to compete with larger sizes of similar quality. Polk seems to be aiming at quality of sound, for a natural, accurate image rather than for the "boom boom" type of consumer. I was able to fit everything in my Prius, which came with the JBL system. The woofers came with adapters that fit the woofers perfectly. I was able to fit the tweeters in the original spots, with simply a bit of cutting away the thin plastic that held the poor quality JBL tweeters (shame on JBL!). The tweeters are very efficient, so I set the level on the crossover to the lowest setting. I bought the Polk 3 1/2" two way speaker from Crutchfield for the center speaker, very efficient, fine tweeter. Good advice from Crutchfield. I think these speakers would fit most cars, more than Crutchfield recommends. I added some sound deadening to the doors. I may add an 8" subwoofer later, but for now the bass is satisfactory due to the naturalness of the sound.

Pros: Very smooth, natural, accurate, musical, detailed sound. Tweeters will reproduce highest musical frequencies. Will play loud, too. Can handle more power than rated, with ease.

Cons: None. Bass is as good or better than expected for its size.

Good sound, not very versatile

Pete from Encinitas, CA on 8/9/2013

2000 Dodge Viper
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers sound pretty good. I wasn't blown away by them, but they're solid. The grill is huge, and I had to cut it to fit into the car since it was in the door panel and stuck out enough to hit the dash. I had to abandon the screws that came with it as well as they are only designed to be used with the sheet metal nuts that came with them. The tweeters are only meant to fit either recessed or flush on a flat surface so I had to modify them as well to fit my cars curves.

Pros: Good sound, good value, looks nice

Cons: Not very versatile for installation, speaker grill too large

Product Research

High Efficiency Design: The Polk Audio DXi Series speakers feature a high efficiency design; meaning better sound and more volume using less power.

Dynamic Balance Driver Technology: Dynamic Balance is a proprietary Polk Audio technology using laser imaging to determine what combination of speaker materials creates the least resonance. Eliminating resonance in speakers results in a wide, smooth response and low distortion.

Klippel Optimized Components: For a driver to reproduce complex sounds accurately, the cone must move exactly the same distance and manner in both directions. The Klippel distortion analyzer, a device that uses a laser and sophisticated software to do large-scale analysis of drivers in motion, lets Polk optimize the speaker's motor structure, voice coil alignment, and suspension to yield the best possible performance.

Composite Cones: Each woofer features a Dynamic Balance, Bi-Laminate composite, polypropylene cone woofer. These composite cones feature tremendous stiffness-to mass ratio, resulting in faster transients and finer detail.

Rubber Surrounds: For a smoother response and improved durability, the speaker uses rubber surrounds.

Mounting: Out of the box the DXi 6501 woofers are a direct replacement for many standard 6-3/4" applications. Mounting brackets are included with holes matching standard 6-1/2" (3-hole), Ford 6-1/2" (asymmetrical 4-hole), and various 6-3/4" applications. Without using the mounting brackets the speaker also fits into many standard 6-1/2" openings, but the four hole pattern is not a direct replacement (new screw holes would need to be drilled; in this instance mounting depth would be 1.947" and mounting height 0.427"; this application does not sort in the Crutchfield Vehicle Selector because using the mounting bracket requires no modification, and is therefore the preferred 6-1/2" mounting method).

Silk Dome Tweeters: The 1" liquid-cooled, silk/polymer composite dome tweeters provide clear, detailed highs.

Neodymium Magnets: Each tweeter employs a light-weight neodymium magnet for better efficiency.

Mounting: The supplied mounting cups allow you to surface or flush mount the tweeters. The tweeters swivel in the flush-mount housings, allowing you to adjust them for optimum imaging.

Tweeter Mounting Dimensions:

  Surface Mount Flush Mount
Mounting Height 1.030" 0.205"
Depth 0.21" (screw depth) 1.082"
Frame Diameter 2.051" 2.552"
Cutout Diameter N/A 2.018"

Design: The outboard 2-way Butterworth crossovers have a 12 dB/octave slope (high-pass and low-pass).

Tweeter Level Switch: You can adjust the output of the tweeter to match a level appropriate to your vehicle or your system. On the end of crossover (opposite the terminals) the switch can be set to -3 dB, 0 dB, or +3 dB.

Protection Circuit: Each crossover has a built-in electronic circuit that protects the tweeter from accidental overdriving.

Connections: The crossover inputs and outputs are screw terminals. The terminals will accommodate the included wire or spade connectors up to 0.3" wide.

Mounting: There are two mounting holes in the base of each crossover; the cover must be removed to install the mounting screws.

Crossover Dimensions:

  • Width: 3.477"
  • Height: 1.130"
  • Depth: 3.667"

I can tell you personally that these will sound fantastic. I had a set of DXi 6501s in the front and a set of DXi 651's in back all hooked up to the KTU-445U power pack. I was able to crank then with crystal clear sound until my ears were ringing/cracking without the slightest bit of distortion. I had them hooked up in a 2013 Elantra Coupe and liked the system so much that I rebought it and now putting it in my 2012 Genesis coupe. [ Mike  May 23, 2016 ]
I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: These speakers will sound great with an Alpine KTU 445U power pack. 45w of power is more than enough to play clear audio at moderate/loud levels. The Polk speakers are fairly efficient, so they do not require as much power as most other speakers. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. [ Krissy  Jan 13, 2015 ]  Staff
For the 6501s... no, you TECHNICALLY don't need an amp, but a standard aftermarket head unit is only continually pushing about 20 watts per channel. They will sound good, but not really any better than the dxi651s, the coaxial set, without a lot of power. You're better off saving your money if you aren't going to amplify these. However, I DO really recommend the 651s. They'll sound just as good if you aren't amplifying them. [ Derek  Apr 28, 2014 ]
For details on fit or installation please contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to pull up your vehicle and give you the details on if this will fit and what you will need for an installation in your vehicle. [ Krissy  Mar 17, 2014 ]  Staff
I don't see a picture listed for the grilles on this speaker. However, I would expect them to be similar to the grilles from other speakers in this line from Polk. [ Jeff  Nov 25, 2013 ]  Staff
