Our take on the Polk Audio PSW505

Who's afraid of the big, bad Polk PSW505? Probably anyone who's not ready for loud, low bass, delivered with maximum precision and impact.

Who's afraid of the big, bad Polk PSW505? Probably anyone who's not ready for loud, low bass, delivered with maximum precision and impact.

Polk's PSW505 boasts a very sturdily built, slot-loaded enclosure — by reducing port turbulence and distortion, the Slot Load Vent sends out bass that fills your room and still retains detail and shape. Inside this enclosure, Polk's hidden a brawny 300-watt RMS amplifier, which powers the high-quality 12" long-throw woofer. The woofer's Hi-Roll foam surround gives the cone more flexibility for back-and-forth movement. This beast sends out a lot of sound!

The PSW505 doesn't stop there, either. Along with accurate lows for rounding out your music, and all the deep bass growl you crave for home theater, this sub offers flexible connection options and good looks. An unfiltered LFE input lets you maintain precise bass with your Dolby Digital home theater. Speaker-level inputs and outputs and a line-level input add to your options. And the cool styling, with silver details and a real wood veneer, is another popular touch.

Picked this up for an amazing Black Friday deal to replace my old subwoofer that had a failing amp. Could not be happier with my purchase. After tweaking my receiver a bit this subwoofer is amazing. Really nice punch and sound is crisp with just the punch I was looking for.

Simply awesome! Rock solid product. The larger size was worth the extra funds.

BOOOING!!! It's high noon on my sundial anytime I crank this thing up! Flat out AWESOME! Movies/music = movie theatre/concert with this sub! Even at low volumes, this sub presents itself. It's definitely not for the faint of heart! Matched up with LSi15 towers, an LSi center, and LSi7 bookshelfs for surrounds, you'll know where you money went! Crutchfield RULES!!!

Love This Sub !!!

Anonymous from Cockeysville ,MD on 3/20/2007

I just upgraded my 7.1 system from the Monitor series to the i series speakers, which includes the RTi12's,CSi5,FSi3's,FSi5's and the PSW505. And I love them! Living in an apartment, however, I really haven't let these speakers stretch their legs yet. But, I will be buying a house soon. Then, I will really hear what these speakers can do. Even though I like loud movies and music, I'm more into accurate quality sound. These Polk's live up to their name.

Warn your neighbors this thing is LOUD!!!!

Michelle from Maple heights, OH on 1/25/2007

I was gonna buy the PSW12 and figured since I had the extra money, I should get the next line up. Well, I made the right choice. This sub performs very well in a medium to large size room. I have put this sub with a pair of RTI 10's, 2 pairs of FXI 5's and a Csi 3 polk 7.1 system.
The sound is incredible.
If you have the extra money buy this sub and you wont go wrong.
This sub also reproduces great low and high frequency bass and is very "punchy" when listening to music.

Good upgrade from PSW12

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I initially bought the psw12, which I found to be well made and to produce excellent sound but it's 100w amp just wasn't enough for my large, high-ceiling room. Crutchfield was absolutely "no hassle" accepting return of the psw12, even paying the return shipping, so I upgraded to the psw505. Big difference! Movies now have that low "rumble" vibration I was looking for, and music sounds clear and crisp. I have the psw505 paired with Polk M60 fronts, C1 center, and M30 surrounds, and it blends in seamlessly. I do wish the psw505 came in a cherry finish, but the black looks good too -- a very thick, high-quality finish. I am very happy with the psw505, and extremely pleased with Crutchfield's service.

Got Bass?

Jando from San Diego on 12/23/2005

by far, an exceptional value. Heard this and a $1000 velodyne for hours and decided on this one. Bass response was formidable and the excursion was impressive, especially considering this sub is ported. Bass response is not as deep as the velodyne, but is $500 more worth the 3 extra Hz? i don't thinks so. Buy it. Love it. i did :)

Great Sub!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After reading some peoples' opinions on Polk subs, I was worried that this speaker wouldn't perform. However, after listening to music and watching movies for about two weeks now, this sub has not let me down. It is extremely powerful and accurate without sounding boomy. I would highly recommend this sub, as long as you have forgiving neighbors, and a big enough room to handle it.

bangin boomin thundering

mike from ft sheridan il on 6/4/2005

this sub can make a alarm clock radio sound good
right now all i have is a center channel 4' speaker and the polk sub and it sounds great, now all i have to do is get rid of all the rattles in my house

I Love This Subwoofer!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After building my HT room, I installed an older Polk RM6500 system, the speakers just didn't move enough air. I purchased and installed Polk 8" in wall speakers and they sound great, however I continued to use the sub from the RM6500 (100W 8"). I went out and purchased a JBL 10" 250W Sub and found it to be just slightly better than the smaller Polk. It was time to bite the bullet and spend the extra bucks. I ordered the Polk PSW505; the difference is the difference between night and day. The whole system just sounds so much better, the HT experience is enhanced and the Sub gets the job done in high fashion for both CD and HT. It's passed the Lynda test, she hates that deep bass! By far the best $500 I've spent and the Crutchfield experience was as it always is - the best!

Inputs and Outputs Notes
Warranty Notes

Driver: The PSW505 uses a 12" long-throw polymer composite cone driver for deep, smooth response and low distortion. For longer excursion, the woofer uses a hi-roll foam surround.

Video Shielded: The subwoofer is magnetically shielded to allow safe placement next to TVs and video monitors.

Amplifier: The subwoofer is powered by a high-current amplifier producing 300 watts RMS/460 watts dynamic power.

Enclosure: The PSW505's solid MDF enclosure (including a one inch thick front baffle) suppresses enclosure panel resonance for distortion-free, accurate response.

Slot-Loaded Venting: The PSW505 features a wide, long, rear-firing slot-load vent (approximately 12" x 1-1/4") to dramatically reduce turbulence, noise and distortion and significantly improve bass response.

3-Way Power Switch: The subwoofer has a 3-way power switch on the rear panel. You can select "Auto", which turns the unit on automatically when an input signal is received and off a few minutes after the signal stops; "On", which keeps the unit on until it is switched off, and "Off", which turns the unit completely off (instead of placing it in a standby mode). The LED power indicator glows green when the unit is on and red when the unit is off.

Volume Control: The PSW505 has a rotary volume control to adjust the volume of the subwoofer relative to the other speakers in the system.

Phase Switch:The subwoofer's phase switch allows you to select normal or reverse. If the bass sounds muddy or unclear, toggling the phase control can sometimes strengthen the bass "attack."

Low-Pass Filter: The PSW505 offers a continuously variable low-pass filter, adjustable from 60-120Hz with a 24dB/octave slope.

Note: When the subwoofer is connected to a receiver through the LFE input, the low-pass filter of the subwoofer is bypassed. The filter built into the receiver is relied upon to filter the subwoofer output frequencies.

Inputs and Outputs Notes

LFE (Unfiltered) Input: The PSW505 has a gold-plated mono RCA LFE (Low Frequency Effects) input. This input should be used when connecting to a receiver with a filtered subwoofer output, such as those found on most home theater receivers (check the receiver's owner's manual). The LFE input bypasses the subwoofer's built-in low pass crossover.

Note: If the receiver's subwoofer output is unfiltered, you should use either the left or right Line Input of the subwoofer.

Line (Filtered) Inputs: The subwoofer has gold plated left and right RCA Line Level inputs. These inputs are for use with electronics featuring unfiltered "Pre Out" jacks (Example: a separate pre-amp processor with a separate amplifier). It may require "Y adapters" to connect the left and right outputs of the pre-amp processor to both the subwoofer and the power amplifier.

Speaker Level Input/Output: The subwoofer has 5-way binding post connections for front speaker level input and output. The subwoofer's low-pass filter takes the low frequencies (based on the setting of the filter) and passes a full-range signal out to the speakers. This is the recommended method of connecting the subwoofer with a Polk Audio RM-series Home Theater speaker package and other "satellite" speaker systems.

Frequency Response: The overall frequency response for the subwoofer is 23-160Hz, and the -3 dB frequency response is 28-125Hz.

Warranty Notes

Amplifier: The warranty on the amplifier is 3 years parts and labor.

Driver: The warranty on the driver is 5 years parts and labor.
