The sound bar works great, despite the fact that I haven't been able to program it to work with my existing DirecTV remote. Polk customer support suggested that I program it to work with my TV's original remote, but that didn't work either.

The sound bar works great, despite the fact that I haven't been able to program it to work with my existing DirecTV remote. Polk customer support suggested that I program it to work with my TV's original remote, but that didn't work either.

    Pros: Good sound

Cons: Need to use the Polk remote to control the volume

    Marked improvement over TV speakers

GaryM from Rochester, MN on 4/29/2012

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Easy to set up. I had no problems programming TV remote unlike other reviewers. The sound is markedly better than the TV speakers on my Samsung 32 inch LED TV. Two additional inputs use mini stereo jack. Fast and free shipping.

Pros: Easy to use. Works with TV remote, no need for additional remote.

    Cons: No HDMI input.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Clear, solid, excellant sound. Definitely exceeded my expectations.I thought the tv sound was fine but once we set up te polk speakers it was night and day the difference. It is amazing the difference in sound these speakers bring out. Recommend!!!!!

    Pros: Great solid sound!

    Cons: Better directions.

    Amended Review

    AdamB from Chicago on 4/2/2012

This is a supplemental review. Just found out and took adavantage of the fact that the sound bar has three (3) inputs. So, in my office, I got an extension cord and was able to directly connect my PC thereby alleviating the need for desktop speakers, etc. (the first connection is for my flat screen). Am also planning to get an iPhone docking port for the third input. Very handy and helpful.

Pros: Easy to install, decent sound, can use extra inputs in lieu of desk top speakers and for Apple produces, etc.

Cons: Sorry, still does not compare to the (more complext) system I have at home.

    Great Sound

Anonymous from Milwaukee, WI on 2/8/2012

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My sound is SO much better now. I went years just using the speakers on my TV, even though they distorted constantly. I finally decided to buy a sound system, and I definitely made a great choice. This system sounds great. The surround bar is everything I was looking for. The subwoofer is an added bonus. When I'm watching tv and a commercial comes on with hip hop music, I keep thinking someone outside is playing the same song in their car. I love having bass in my living room!

Pros: Easy to set up. Sounds great. Good price.

    Cons: none.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Got this product for my office, where I have a flat screen TV. Relatively easy to set up. Sounds a lot better than either the TV's speakers or my desk top speakers. Also use to play iTunes. Was perfect for my office. Would probably not get it for home. But, for the price, was perfect for my 20' x 20' office.

Great Sound and Easy to Set Up

BradK from St. Paul, MN on 2/2/2012

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great unit that fits well in the area I have. When I added new TV, I did not want to redo the entire sound system. Even though the sound system is a little dated, it still works great and I did not want to rewire everything. Having a great set of Polk speakers, I looked at this unit. The advisors assured me I would not be disappointed, and I am not. The sound is great and it functions well with my LG TV. It was easy to set up and program with the cable remote. All I had to do was plug in the power, the optical cable, turn off the TV audio and program the remote. Under 15 minutes. It may not have the full sound of a complete surround sound system, but I only paid a small fraction of the cost and received great sound for the money I spent.

Pros: Sound, easy set up, functions well

    Cons: None

    Nice Speaker

Melvin from Corbin, KY on 1/29/2012

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Speaker has a nice bang for the buck. Very simple to assemble and connect. Sound is much better than the stock tv sound. Not the ideal replacement for true surround sound but a great substitute for having to run wires and hang multiple speakers.

Pros: Good sound for the money. Easy to connect.

Cons: One more remote to use if you don't sync with a master remote. Doesn't completely fill the room with full surround sound.

    Quality Upgrade

    Robs from Reading,PA on 1/29/2012

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After 30 days, a good upgrade to LCD speakers . Adds dimmension and quality to all sounds and a low level of surround sound to movies and sports, clarity to voices on all shows. Having a current issue with sporadic scratchy sound quality on start-up, corrected by turning soundbar off/back on?? Need to call polk. The 4000 is a good, not great, upgrade to my 5 yr.old 40" sony lcd. Good for the $$. If you're looking for great sound, spend more money. When I hit the lottery I'll upgrade, but will put this nice, compact unit in another room.

Pros: Nice looking bar, in-laws barely noticed it on bookshelf above tv. one small blue light while unit is on. Easy hook-up.

Cons: Scratchy sound on start-up. Price dropped again in Jan.

Rj from Butler, pa on 1/24/2012

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Sound is not what I expected. Thunder is loud........... I can not get the right volume, its either up or down. It is better than the TV speakers but not much. Easy to hook up, but not worth the price.

    Cons: Save your money

    Update to prior review

    Lou from Pa on 1/21/2012

Please see previous review from January 13. After receiving a third unit from Crutchfield we finally have a 4000 that works properly. The sound is excellent. It really brought the 3D TV to life. Although the first two units were defective this one is excellent. Crutchfield handled the problem very promptly and to our satisfaction. I would definitely recommend Crutchfield to anyone and hold Polk in high regard. No matter what item you purchase there is always a chance of a problem. We were just unlucky enough to have two with problems. And that is what the warranty and guaranties are for. To handle the problem. Will I purchase Polk products again and will I purchase from Crutchfield again, you can bet on it. Both are great.

Pros: Excellent sound quality and plenty of volume. Good warranty service.

    Polk 4000 Sound Bar

    Lou from Pa on 1/13/2012

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Ordered this system for my adult daughter for Christmas. Unit has great sound however after a few minutes it would completely shut off. Contacted Crutchfield service and after several phone conversations and testing it was determined that the unit was defective. Crutchfield immediately set new unit. Hooked up replacement unit and it does not work at all. Again contacted Crutchfield and after over phone tests again determined that this unit was also defective. Crutchfield has sent out the third new unit and we are currently awaiting it. Crutchfield has promised a different brand replacement if we so desire. But really don't know what is supposed to be better. Well submit further review when everything is settled. Not Crutchfields fault. They are great.

Pros: Comes in a nice box. Sounds excellent when operating

Cons: Shuts off repeatedly and has to be rebooted to get sound. Second unit didn't work at all

Perfect addition to any flat screen TV. Sounds 100x better than stock TV speakers. Subwoofer gives ample kick and had decent wireless range. Simple setup, comes with everything you need.

Pros: Sound Bass Ease of Setup

    Polk SoundBar 4000

    j w from Aspinwall, PA on 11/16/2011

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Thanks to Polk for delivering on expectations. Dramatic improvement over the TV speakers AND the old wired surround system it replaced. The bar is crisp and clear without crating visual clutter around the TV. The wireless sub provides plenty of low tones for action films.

Pros: Performed as advertised. Easy set-up. Easily programmed to work with cable remote.

    Cons: nothing.

    Polk SoundBar 4000

Bob W from Lake Tapps, WA on 11/4/2011

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very pleased with overall sound improvement. Suprisingly good with movies. I would say an excellent value for the money. Because it sits just outside of most recognized component categories (not really an Amp) it is difficult to program for use in a Universal Remote.

Pros: A huge step over the TV speakers. Excellent value.

Cons: Harmony 700 Universal Remote doesn't quite know what to do with it.

    Outstanding Sound!

Mr. P. from Los Angeles on 10/22/2011

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

    See what I loved.

Pros: Excellent sound. Works exactly as advertised. I was skeptical because I'm used to. 5 speaker system. This blew me away. Thanks, Polk Audio. Also, called tech support and they were great in helping me set it up to work with one remote.

    Cons: Nothing I didn't like.

    System Features

Instant Home Theater (IHT): The Polk Audio SurroundBar 4000 Instant Home Theater (IHT) is a complete 2.1-channel home theater system comprised of a single self-powered speaker, a wireless powered subwoofer, and an IR remote control. The SurroundBar 4000 IHT utilizes Polk Digital Logic (Polk's Proprietary DSP Technology) to deliver richer, fuller sound (with no rear speakers) to your flat-panel TV from a compact system with no complex hook-up or set-up.

Polk Digital Logic: The SurroundBar 4000 Instant Home Theater utilizes Polk Digital Logic (Polk's proprietary DSP programming) to deliver big, crisp sonic performance with no complicated setup or calibration. Through Polk Digital Logic, the SurroundBar 4000 IHT's sound is created independent of any room boundaries. Polk Digital Logic helps to maintain a solid center channel for clear, intelligible dialogue and Polk's signature warm & full sound.

Self-Powered SurroundBar: The self-powered surroundbar features two 2" x 6" full-range drivers powered by a built-in 50 watt x 2-channel amplifier. The speaker itself is lightweight in part because of the neodymium magnet structures in the drivers. The surroundbar features a black plastic enclosure with non-removable metal grille. The surroundbar can be placed on a tabletop or wall-mounted. It provides analog and digital audio connections to your television. The surroundbar requires AC power.

Wireless Powered Subwoofer: The wireless powered subwoofer features a down-firing 6.5" woofer and down-firing port in a bass-reflex (ported) cabinet. The 6.5" woofer is powered by a built-in 80 watt amplifier. The wireless powered subwoofer receives it audio signal wirelessly from the system's surroundbar, so there is no subwoofer cable to connect. The wireless powered subwoofer requires AC power.

System Controls: The SurroundBar 4000 IHT offers the following system functions - Power, Surroundbar Volume, Subwoofer Volume, Source Selection, and Mute. You can control these functions from the Surroundbar's touch-sensitive controls, included remote control, or your TV's programmable remote control.

Touch-Sensitive Controls: The touch-sensitive buttons on the front of the surroundbar are easy to use.

Remote Control: The included IR wireless remote provides wireless operation of the SurroundBar 4000 IHT.

Programmable TV Remote: You can program the SurroundBar 4000 IHT to respond to your existing TV's remote.

Channel ID: The channel ID switches on the rear-panel of the surroundbar and subwoofer need to be set to the same channel (1-4).

Wireless Connection: The SurroundBar and powered subwoofer communicate with one another wirelessly. The SurroundBar sends the low-pass audio signal from your TV or connected source to the powered subwoofer wirelessly over an RF frequency.

Note: The SurroundBar and powered subwoofer come from the factory preset to work together. If the wireless subwoofer stops receiving an audio signal from the SurroundBar, there is a sync button on back of the SurroundBar to press to regain system connection.

Analog & Digital Connections: The surroundbar features one optical digital input and two stereo 3.5mm inputs to connect the system to your flat-panel TV.

Analog Connections: The surroundbar is equipped with two analog 3.5mm stereo inputs to connect your television (which may lack an optical digital output). If your TV is equipped with stereo RCA outputs, a minijack-to-RCA adapter is provided. The additional 3.5mm stereo input can be used to connect another audio device, such as your MP3 player.

Digital Connection: The surroundbar also features an optical digital input to connect your flat-panel TV with an optical digital output (optical digital cable included). The surroundbar supports 2-channel PCM & Dolby Digital through its optical digital input.

    Mounting Options

Placement Options: The SurroundBar 4000 Instant Home Theater offers various placement & mounting options for the surroundbar & wireless powered subwoofer.

Surroundbar Placement: The surroundbar should be centered under or above your TV screen. The lightweight easy-to-mount single speaker can be placed on a tabletop or wall-mounted. It can sit on a flat surface because of its attached rubber pads that enable it to rest securely. If your TV is wall-mounted, the surroundbar can be mounted right beneath it using the speaker's integrated keyhole slots (x2) on the rear-panel.

Note: The keyhole slots are spaced 16.75" apart.

Wireless Subwoofer Placement: The powered subwoofer receives its signal from the surroundbar wirelessly, so it can be placed virtually anywhere in the room (up to 50' from surroundbar). It only requires plugging into an AC outlet.

    Power Requirements

Power Supply: Both the surroundbar and wireless powered subwoofer require an AC outlet connection using the supplied AC power supply and AC power cords.

Auto Power: When their master power switches are left on, the amplifiers in both the surroundbar and subwoofer turn on automatically when the surroundbar receives an audio signal. Both amplifiers turn off after approximately 15 minutes without an audio signal.
