Let in external noise on your own terms

Sometimes, you need to block out the world. Other times, you need to hear what's going on. That's why the UltraFocus 6000i headphones offer a couple of cool features to keep you tuned in when and where you need to be. The push-to-hear ambient control button is made for moments when you need to have a quick conversation. It automatically mutes your music while the built-in noise-canceling microphones pass external sound through to your ears. It's perfect for answering a quick question from a coworker in the office or asking the flight attendant for another drink.

What about those times when you want to block some noise, but still be aware of your surroundings? That's when you'll want to engage "feed forward microphone" mode. This allows some external sounds to pass through to your ears, while providing enough noise-canceling power to hear your music. It's great for busy city streets so you can hear traffic, or empty streets so you know when someone is approaching.

If you have an iPhone®, the UltraFocus 6000i headphones are ready for double duty. Not only can you control music playback and volume with the built-in three-button remote, you can take calls as well with the built-in microphone. With so many features packed into such a small headphone at such a great price, the UltraFocus 6000i make an excellent iPhone companion for anyone who spends lots of time on the road or on the go.

I expected nothing less from Polk Audio and they actually exceed my expectations with a superior noise reduction experience, excellent build quality and fit, plus a nice travel case to boot.

Pros: Quality, fit, and comfort

Cons: A bit bulky

Good for earbuds

Big headphone hurt my ears after about an hr. that is why I chose these. Bose has better noise reduction, Polk has far better sound.

Pros: Sound quality, comfort

Cons: Noise cancellation

Killer Earbuds

Keith from San Francisco, CA on 11/17/2014

This is just a well-engineered pair of earbuds. The sound quality is excellent, the base is awesome, and they are some of the most comfortable earbuds I've ever worn. I've listened to them on a number plane rides, and the ambient noise just fades into the distant background, leaving behind the clear, crisp music. The batter life is great, averaging around 24 to 36 hours of continuous listening time. In my view, there's no need for the -10db toggle switch - I never use it. One important note to mention: the volume control rocker switch on the headphones doesn't work on Android phones or if you're listening on some other device. However, the call quality is excellent - both ways.

Pros: Sound quality and battery life.

Cons: Volume function doesn't work on Android phones or any other devices.

Great sound, great noise canceling

Chris from Los Angeles on 10/16/2014

I've owned Panasonic noise canceling earbuds previously, and tried out several other brands, but the Polks are superior. Listening to Fleetwood Mac "Rumors" album, for example, you hear so much detail, and it's well balanced. Good bass performance without being too beefy. And the flat cord design is awesome, very durable, and never gets tangled at all. The fit and feel in the ears is also nice. The only complaint I'd have is the -10db switch is a toggle which is too janky and kind of cheap. I don't even use it, since I like the default 0db setting, but a push button would've been better.

Pros: Great audio detail Good bass performance without being too heavy Comfortable fit in the ears Flat cord design is sturdy and keeps cord from getting tangled

Cons: Toggle switch for the -10db option is too flimsy, should've been a button

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Outstanding sound but don't use the "shirt clip". It felt tight when I put it on the cord for use if needed. When I tried to use it later, it caused a loud popping sound in both channels. This noise remained after I removed the shirt clip. Every time I touched the battery compartment and the cable moved, I heard a loud crackling sound which did not go away after I removed the shirt clip. Again, the sound is outstanding, good bass, mids, and highs. Some of the "Pink Floyd" albums really really test them (wish you were here, the dark side...). Just please don't use that shirt clip. It fits too tightly and messes up the ground shot for the drivers. I liked them enough to have Crutchfield replace them with the same model. Incidentally, they were great. They shipped the replacement pair immediately---no coercion necessary. I will use them in the future. I am a regular Bose user, but I do like the value of these earbuds.

Pros: Excellent sound, the product is well built and should hold up well. I like the mute with external mic feature.

Cons: That poorly designed, fifty cent shirt clip needs a better attachment point with the cable. The replacement clip was the same fit as the original.

Good choice

MikeM from Palmyra, Va on 9/2/2014

While i had liked an over the ear brand when after several years a hinge broke they would only give me $50 on an electrical working unit with a broken hinge. I tried the Polk audio ear buds and gound them comfortable and good at noise reduction even on an aircraft. I do like them and also find them much dasier to store while traveling.

Pros: Small size, good noise reduction, a variety of ear-plugs, I found an earplug I liked

Cons: i did drop an ear plug but fortunately found it. if this had been in an airport it would be gone

Cons: None

Excellent noise cancelling headphones!

itim from Fort Worth, TX on 7/24/2013

These headphones sound really great. I listen mostly to rock and heavy metal and the bass response is the best by far that I've heard from any headphones that I've used (Sennheiser HD595, PX100, Bose Tri-Port, Apple earbuds). It sounds like you have a dedicated subwoofer inside your head! I also listen to classical, jazz and some pop music and so far I haven't been disappointed with the performance of these headphones. From lows to mids and highs, the frequency response is very good throughout. Noise cancellation is also very good though I have not had the chance to use these in an airplane. For everyday use in the office, they work pretty well. Of course, it can't completely eliminate background chatter but combined with the noise isolating buds and high enough volume, I feel like I'm alone in the room listening to my tunes. The battery also lasted a few weeks with normal use in the office for a few hours a day. I chose this over the AKG K391 NC because of the replaceable batteries (vs. rechargeable), the advertised better lower frequency response (8Hz vs. 12Hz), lower impedance (16 vs. 32 ohms) and talk-through feature. Although the 6000i can't be used anymore when the battery dies, I wouldn't want to use the K391 without the NC feature. Simple solution is to bring at least one spare AAA battery and you're up and running again. Also, I don't know how long the rechargeable battery will last in the K391 and if it is replaceable. I highly recommend these headphones

Pros: - really good sound quality - lots of bass - noise isolating + active noise cancelling - very comfortable to wear all day - iPhone controls (also works with MacBook Retina) - Push-To-Hear Ambient Control (no need to take off earbuds to hear outside sounds) - slim plug can be accommodated by most if not all iPhone cases - high quality carrying case - good battery life - replaceable battery (no need to be tethered to a charging device, just replace and go! - no waiting) - tangle-free fla

Cons: - build quality of the battery compartment/control circuit can be improved (cables and earbuds are really good) - does not include home theater adaptor (as per Polk website and as of this writing, it's included)

Product Research

Overview: The Polk Audio UltraFocus 6000i in-ear headphones are made specifically for iOS devices. The in-line 3-button remote control/microphone work with your iPhone, iPod, and iPad for controlling your music, videos, and phone calls. Active Noise Canceling shuts out ambient noise, so all you hear is your music or phone call. The UltraFocus 6000i comes with a wide assortment of ear tips, an airline adapter, and a semi-hard storage case.

Optimized Active Noise Canceling: Active Noise Canceling technology uses sophisticated audio algorithms to dramatically reduce distracting outside noise by up to 15dB. ANC technology, combined with Optimized Active Tuning, creates an interior soundstage that sounds comparable to your home audio system. The Active Noise Canceling circuitry is powered by the supplied AAA battery, which provides 40-60 hours of listening. In addition to the ANC technology, the Passive Isolation technology of the sealed ear-canal design naturally minimizes external sound while boosting bass response.

Active Dynamic Balance Drivers: The 13.6mm drivers are made of PET, a lightweight, but durable material. These Active Dynamic Balance drivers are sealed into a micro-enclosure, and tuned and fitted to eliminate unwanted resonances.

Push-to-Hear Ambient Control: For those times when you temporarily want to hear external sounds, the UltraFocus 6000i's Push-to-Hear Ambient Control will instantly mute the audio signal while amplifying outside sounds to let you hear what's going on. This convenient control lets you hear and carry on a conversation without having to remove the headphones. The Push-to-Hear button is located on the in-line control module.

Attenuation Switch: The control module has a two-way switch that allows you to attenuate the audio signal by -10dB. For normal listening, the switch should be in the "0" position. If you are connected to an audio source with an excessive high level, such as an airline audio jack, you can switch to the "-10dB" position to attenuate the signal to a more listenable level.

Flat Audio Cable: The headphones are equipped with a flat, flexible planar audio cable which resists tangling. The low-friction coating on the cable helps prevent contact noise from distorting your music. The cable features StrainGuard Kevlar core technology to prevent the wire from being pulled apart at high strain areas. The headphones are terminated with a gold-plated 3.5mm connector that has been designed to fit through the opening on most smartphone and portable audio player cases. An airline adapter, with dual 3.5mm plugs, is also included.

Multiple Ear Tips: The headphones come with multiple sizes and styles of ear tips. Properly fitted ear tips help you to eliminate extraneous noise, experience greater bass response, and enjoy better tonal balance. Correctly-fitting ear tips also feel more comfortable. Polk includes three pairs of StayFit Silicone Tips (small, medium, and large), two pairs of Stayfit 3-Flange Silicone Tips (small and large), and two pairs of Memory Foam Tips (small and large).

Using them now, confirming not noise canceling thru mic. The ambient air is the source for all sound any device applies noise canceling.
