Our take on the JBL Flip by Crutchfield's Ralph Graves
The Flip comes with its own durable carrying pouch.
The JBL Flip is only about the size of a tall soda can, but it sounds anything but small. This pint-sized portable Bluetooth system takes the audio streamed from your portable device and kicks it out with surprising power and clarity.
Bluetooth connectivity for music and conversation
The Flip lets you wirelessly stream audio from your Bluetooth-enabled smartphone, tablet, laptop or other device. A built-in microphone turns the Flip into a wireless speakerphone. Just press the “Accept Call” button to start the conversation.
Small package, big sound
Inside the Flip are two 1-5/8" full-range drivers that deliver clean, clear sound, with a built-in bass port that reinforces the low tones. Thanks to JBL's advanced digital signal processing, the Flip can produce room-filling sound despite its compact design.
The Flip has its own durable neoprene carrying pouch. Slip in the Flip and you're good to go. The system comes with an AC wall adapter, and gives you up to 5 hours of portable operation from its built-in rechargeable batteries. An auxiliary input lets you play non-Bluetooth portable devices through the system, too.
The quantity of sound was impressive from something so compact...The sound signature skews toward the high end of the frequency spectrum. But it does so with clarity and openness that similarly priced speakers can't always replicate.
— David Brown, Crutchfield A/V Writer
Really good sound, good highs and descent base. Impressed with the sound and how it fills the room.

Portable Bluetooth Powered Speaker: The JBL Flip is a self-powered Bluetooth speaker that is ideal for your Bluetooth enabled smartphone, tablets, players and other devices. The JBL Flip supports Bluetooth audio streaming and Bluetooth hands-free communication. This unit pairs with your Bluetooth-enabled device with a single press of a button. Once paired, the JBL Flip will automatically re-connect with your device when in wireless range (up to 33').
- Bluetooth Audio Streaming (A2DP): The JBL Flip portable speaker streams stereo music wirelessly from Bluetooth-enabled devices such as your Apple iOS device, Android smartphone/tablet, Blackberry, computer/PC or other devices. You will continue to use your Bluetooth-enabled device to navigate your music and to view song/artist information.
- Bluetooth Hands-Free Communication (HFP): The JBL Flip features a microphone and a call-answer button so you can answer phone calls, talk on Skype, or use Facetime from the speaker. A long press of the call-answer button will activate the voice command feature of your smartphone (if applicable). You will continue to use your Bluetooth-enabled device to view video calls, manually enter phone number, and control advanced phone functions.
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the JBL Flip.
Full-Range JBL Sound: The JBL Flip employs digital signal processing to generate room-filling audio from a compact speaker. Using two 1.625" drivers, a 10-watt amplifier, and a built-in bass port, the JBL Flip delivers full-range JBL sound with punchy bass.
Versatile, Portable Design: The JBL Flip stereo speaker plays from either a vertical or horizontal position, so you can place it in a variety of locations. And it fits easily into a backpack, so you can take it from one place to the next. A soft carrying case is provided to protect the speaker during storage or travel.
Aux Input: In addition to built-in Bluetooth, the JBL Flip is fitted with a 3.5mm auxiliary input for connection of almost any portable audio player with a headphone output.
LED Indicator: A clearly visible LED lets you know when the built-in battery needs to be recharged, as well as when the JBL Flip is in Bluetooth listening or pairing mode.
Rechargeable Battery: The JBL Flip stereo speaker has a built-in Li-ion rechargeable battery that provides up to five hours of playback time. You can easily recharge the battery using the included AC power adapter. Charging time is approximately 3 hours. The AC power adapter can also be used to power the speaker.

As long as you have Bluetooth that's it and just click pair and your done and the sound is awesome [ LEE Apr 22, 2014 ]
Nick,Typically the pairing occurs automatically. Not sure this depends on your OS, but if your laptop or PC is bluetooth enabled, you should merely have to activate the pairing on your computere and then hit the bluetooth button on the speaker. Granted, with all technology not everything is always compatible. There is a power jack to plug in the speaker, but there is also an aux jack which you may be able to plug into the PC/laptop with the appropriate chord. The speaker does not come with any chord other than a power chord for charging. It's a great little speaker, but you may want to test your connectivity before final purchase. The only negative with this speaker is it does not have a USB plug for charging or plugging into a computer. If you upgrade you get this feature. Good luck! [ CHARLES R Apr 22, 2014 ]
I've used the JBL with Apple products and it has been fantastic....a great speaker that comes with a wonderful case too. The case also keeps the speaker protected from sand at the beach! Maybe you should check with JBL directly about Windows 7. [ KAREN Apr 21, 2014 ]
This speaker requires Bluetooth to pair it to a device so if your laptop has Bluetooth you can just pair it that way. Or you worst case scenario you have to use the aux port. All you need for that is an auxiliary cord. It will work with anything if you use that. Windows 7 has no effect on whether it works or not . [ AUSTEN Apr 21, 2014 ]
Hi Nick, I've had this speaker about a year. it functions very well with no serious issues. The sound is clear and it plays louder then my Ipad. It pairs via Bluetooth or a single hard wired connection I am unaware of any difference using windows but I use Apple products so I'm not an expert . If you have Bluetooth the device will search out the speaker and ask to pair. If you agree it is automatic. From then on it should happen each time with little effort other then pushing a couple of power buttons. I hope this helps, Regards, Larry [ LARRY Apr 21, 2014 ]
Maybe for the first time use. Generally it holds a (full) charge for a while-- probably for about 8 hours. I haven't noticed an issue with the flip in terms of battery life. Overall, I am very happy with the speaker. Sounds good, connects easily and had a good battery life. [ ROBERT Jul 22, 2014 ]
Yes I'd say if you want it to last it's entire battery life. [ APRIL Jul 22, 2014 ]
The first time you charge it.make sure its charged all the way..other wise use at will..and btw..you can use it while it chages and it wont affect the charge [ TARUIS Jul 22, 2014 ]
The speaker does come with a little charge but it is best to fully charge it before use [ Thomas Jul 21, 2014 ]
Yes you do have to charge it . The 3 hours that you are asking about is good but I charged mine for at least 8 hours I received my JBL before I went to work so I automatically put it on the charger. Plus also u might want to let it run down til the red blinks so it can charge fully once a month. I haven't had no problem with mine as of yet. The other thing is if you turn the volume up on the flip you can control it better from your phone or tablet versus using the volume button on the speaker. Hope this helps u EM from philadelphia , pa [ EMORY Jul 21, 2014 ]
I charge it but not 3 hours just like a hour and it was ready to use it an love it i take anywhere [ ERICK Jul 21, 2014 ]
yes great speaker [ HASSELL Jul 21, 2014 ]
You will need to charge the JbL flip if you want to use it wirelessly for first time. If you can't wait, then simply plug it in and listen to music while it's charging. [ MARVELIA JIMENE Jul 21, 2014 ]
No, if it's completely dead than you can plug it in for a couple of minutes and keep rocking out while its plugged in and charging. [ MARIA C Jul 21, 2014 ]
