Our take on the JBL Flip

The JBL Flip is only about the size of a tall soda can, but it sounds anything but small. This pint-sized portable Bluetooth system takes the audio streamed from your portable device and kicks it out with surprising power and clarity.

JBL Flip white

The Flip comes with its own durable carrying pouch.

The JBL Flip is only about the size of a tall soda can, but it sounds anything but small. This pint-sized portable Bluetooth system takes the audio streamed from your portable device and kicks it out with surprising power and clarity.

Bluetooth connectivity for music and conversation

The Flip lets you wirelessly stream audio from your Bluetooth-enabled smartphone, tablet, laptop or other device. A built-in microphone turns the Flip into a wireless speakerphone. Just press the “Accept Call” button to start the conversation.

Small package, big sound

Inside the Flip are two 1-5/8" full-range drivers that deliver clean, clear sound, with a built-in bass port that reinforces the low tones. Thanks to JBL's advanced digital signal processing, the Flip can produce room-filling sound despite its compact design.

 Convenient portability

The Flip has its own durable neoprene carrying pouch. Slip in the Flip and you're good to go.  The system comes with an AC wall adapter, and gives you up to 5 hours of portable operation from its built-in rechargeable batteries. An auxiliary input lets you play non-Bluetooth portable devices through the system, too.

From our JBL Flip portable Bluetooth speaker review:

The quantity of sound was impressive from something so compact...The sound signature skews toward the high end of the frequency spectrum. But it does so with clarity and openness that similarly priced speakers can't always replicate.

Christmas gift for hubby. Both he and I were happily surprised this little potable device sounds just as good as bigger models. Use it everywhere in the house, range is excellent. The battery life is more or less 5 hours but it charges up in no time. Gotten compliments on it. Very satisfied.

"Big" little speaker

MiketheTrucker from Ohio on 5/5/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a powerful little package. I bought to use on the go-my pickup stereo was stolen a while back, with my mp3 player and this speaker, I've got music on the go when commuting to work. I drive a semi-truck for a living and sometimes I'm not in the same truck-some have okay radios, some have no radio; this little JBL Flip speaker can be heard over the noisy truck at freeway speeds. The bass response is decent for this package, I think. More battery life would be nice, but I have fooled around with hi-fi equipment long enough to know that volume and bass eats power! Overall, I am happy with this outfit. A couple of buddies heard it and were impressed as well. We are not kids ( all of us are 50+) so I'm not interested in rattling my neighbors windows and don't listen to anything but jazz and blues. So this speaker is fine when I need to take my music with me!

Pros: Small package, decent price, decent sound quality.

Cons: Could use more battery life.

For the money it is worth the price. Sounds good for a little speaker .

Pros: Tiny , sounds good , charged fast , affordable .

Cons: A little moe bass would be ideal.

Pros: Cannot beat it for the money

Everyone admires it

chazdee from Austin, TX on 3/11/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This has worked well with my cell phone to play music and voice such as interviews and audio books. When I have played it for others, everyone remarks on what a nice tone it has for the size. This is good because I am more audio oriented and would say it has a "warm" sound meaning that the mids are emphasized over the highs. As would be expected bass response is limited but not absent. A nice accessory.

Pros: The sound and size plus Bluetooth (Yay! no wires)

Cons: I read that the battery has some limit of recharging cycles. That will be a drag when it won't charge anymore. Hopefully it will be a while since I don't use constantly.

I needed a speakerphone and good portable speaker and this fit both needs well.

Pros: Great sound, easy to sync and portable

Cons: I've found that when used upright it's easy to knock over. Seems pretty durable but if using outdoors or near hard floors I tend to leave it horizontal.

Good sound, lousy battery life

very good sound from a small little package. pairs very well and easily with android devices, but you have to hand it to 8 found a new way to does not pair well with windows 8, even with new driver downloads. the speaker is flawless on android, but is constantly choppy and cutting out with windows 8.

Pros: size, sound, portability

Cons: windows 8 sucks and does not pair efficiently with the flip

Good Portable Bluetooth Speaker

Anonymous from Guam on 1/7/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Needed a small wireless speaker for office presentations and trips. It helps that JBL is a brand known for speakers with good sound. Loved that the Flip is small, portable, wireless using bluetooth connection and can fill a small conference room with big booming sound. It was great that it had its own carrying case too. But the best feature was the speakerphone capability for conference calls during these meetings. At this price this speaker was a great bargain for all its uses.

Pros: Good sound, great price.

Cons: Can have sound distortions with heavy bass songs/sounds.

This small speaker sounds like you are in a concert hall. Amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Timewarpone from California on 12/26/2013

This thing produces excellent sound. I was very impressed. Easy to use also. Has an audio in-port for hard wire connections but cord NOT included. Now comes the negatives: Must use dedicated wall charger NOT USB charger capable. The built-in rechargeable battery is permanent therefore cannot be changed. The included directions are a joke. I finally had to go to the web site and search around for info on how to sync. Once your device is sync'd it works perfectly The included directions are picture generic with no written explanations. It's a guessing game based on your interpretation of the symbols.

Pros: Great Sound & small size. Comes with protective carrying pouch. Has audio in-port for hard wire connections such as a PC or portable DVD player.

Cons: See Above

OMG - Great Portable Speaker

Gant from Smyrna, GA on 10/10/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just received this speaker and it's AWESOME for the price, size, audio output, etc. I do a lot of research before making this type of purchase as I intend to use it for a long time and expect quality and performance, and I'm not disappointed at all with this one. My expectations for a portable speaker using a Bluetooth connection were not very high - honestly we're not talking about a high-end home A/V system - and I've listened to the various portable speakers owned by friends over the past several months. This one beats them all hands down (Bose, Beats, Logitech). Plus, these competitors cost $150-$299 -- and the JBL Flip is less than $100! Highly recommended.

Good sound for a small speaker

Miner-WA from Colville, WA on 10/2/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this for my son to play his iPod. It has good sound for the price. It also is built well, not made out of cheap materials; an important factor when it's a gift for a boy under ten. The size is excellent; very portable.

Pros: Price, sound, quality.

Cons: The side controls are a bit awkward if you want to place it horizontal.

Great product

David from Cookeville, TN on 9/3/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Nice value for a simple product. The sound quality is amazing. And for the small size it is, I am blown away. I assume the sound quality is about the same as the Jawbone Jambox. But the price is lower. I redeemed some Crutchfield points also for my purchase, and had no problem. The battery life lasts well; at least 5 hours for me as advertised. But if the battery is dead, just plug it in, and you can still use it. It also fits in a cup holder for your vehicle. The buttons are located on top. Looks attractive on my desk, and I like the carrying case. Using it as a speakerphone for my mobile phone worked well with no problems.

Pros: Price, value, easy to use, attractive

Cons: No USB port, only allows 1 device to be paired at a time

Excellent for the price

Johnny from SoFla on 8/21/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Sounds good, looks good, as long as you are not expecting window-shaking bass and neighborhood sound blasting volume for hours on end, you're good to go. When put up on end it fills the back yard or any decent sized room with good clear sound, but it's not going to overpower your neighbor's lawn mower either. Keep in mind it houses a pair of 1 1/2 drivers only. Bluetooth reaches at least 30'. I like the little neoprene case it comes with for protection at the beach, for the speaker that is, and the wireless conneciton to my iPod was seamless. Only knock I could possibly come up with is no USB plug. It would be nice to plug into laptop at office or for travel. Gotta spend more $ for the JBL Charge to get that.

Pros: Size, sound, ease of use, price

Cons: No USB plug for charging or wired connection

Great sound and easy to use

This speaker was so easy to use. Just charge it, put your device on blue tooth mode and you have great sound in minutes. It has great sound for being so small. It's very portable as well.

Pros: Very portable and great sound.

Cons: A longer battery life would be great.

Robbo from Orlando,Fl. on 7/17/2013

i've had mine for about 3 months now, i like the sound, size, easy to carry with you.

Pros: great sound for something of it's size no matter what type of music you like

Cons: needs a longer battery life if you're on the go, i only get about 2 hours out of it and when at places like the park you can not recharge it. Needs some type of car charger!!! Can't enjoy it if you ca't play it...

Great portable bluetooth speaker. Plenty of sound and very convenient for playing. music from my iPhone5. Replaces outdoor speakers on deck no problem. Needless to say I've been impressed so far. Only goes 3-4 hours on a charge but seems to recharge relatively quickly. For the price it can't be beat.

Pros: Great sound, portability, ease of use

Cons: Battery life, bulky charger

Bob W from Burbank, CA on 5/27/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A great compact bluetooth speaker. Connects easily with my android phone and Apple devices playing Pandora and mp3. I would characterize the sound quality as very good+. I have listened to rap, rock, jazz, blues and acoustic and the JBL does a good job with all of them. Surprisingly, it seems to do best with bass heavy music. I would say the mids are its weakest point. That said, it is still an excellent portable speaker. Highly recommend it.

Pros: Portable and easy to use. Great value.

Cons: A little muddy on the mid range.

JBL Flip Bluetooth speaker

Anonymous from Philadelphia pa on 5/16/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I love it !!!!!!! It's compact, no cords to attach the speaker to just sync it to the phone, push the button and its time to jam!!!!! My mother was so amazed with mine I had to turn around and order one for her and she's not even tech savvy??. I have a co-worker who has a Bluetooth speaker & his speaker isn't even as loud as my JBL so now he doesn't even turn his speaker on !!!! I'm completely satisfied

Pros: Small, you can travel with it, compact. Packs a punch even when the volume isn't turn all the way up

Cons: Zero

Awesome little speaker.

SixFeetDeepReviews from Tinley Park, IL on 3/31/2013

You will be amazed at the sound quality. Small and portable & the included case is a very nice touch. So far the best $100 you can spend for a portable speaker.

Pros: Sound quality. Small & portable. Very loud! Decent bass for its size.

Cons: Weak battery. Maybe you'll get 3 hours while playing it somewhat loud. Some might not be happy with the generic charger, but it's sturdier than the Micro USB IMO. Very weak Bluetooth on the earlier serial number models.

Top notch sound

Shayne B. from Louisville, KY on 3/28/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Sounds great and gets loud. I read some mixed reviews on the Bluetooth and do agree that the distance is a little lacking but how far away do you need to be. It would be nice if you could control the device with the flip. The sound blows away the Beats Pill and a lot of other more expensive speakers,

Pros: Loud, high quality sound. Solid construction.

Cons: No device control from speaker.

A Must For The Music Lover On The Go!

Brad from North Carolina on 3/23/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Perfect for use with Rhapsody and iheart radio. Ultra portable, sound quality is quite good, can easily get loud enough to fill a small to medium sized room, built in microphone is a great feature for using the device as a speakerphone. I assure there is nothing in the sub $100 category that will come close to the features/dual functionality, sound quality/volume, and portability of the Flip.

Pros: Sound quality, speakerphone, neoprene case is a nice touch

Cons: Battery life should be longer than 5 hours, incorporate a usb charger

As long as you have Bluetooth that's it and just click pair and your done and the sound is awesome [ LEE  Apr 22, 2014 ]
Nick,Typically the pairing occurs automatically. Not sure this depends on your OS, but if your laptop or PC is bluetooth enabled, you should merely have to activate the pairing on your computere and then hit the bluetooth button on the speaker. Granted, with all technology not everything is always compatible. There is a power jack to plug in the speaker, but there is also an aux jack which you may be able to plug into the PC/laptop with the appropriate chord. The speaker does not come with any chord other than a power chord for charging. It's a great little speaker, but you may want to test your connectivity before final purchase. The only negative with this speaker is it does not have a USB plug for charging or plugging into a computer. If you upgrade you get this feature. Good luck! [ CHARLES R  Apr 22, 2014 ]
I've used the JBL with Apple products and it has been fantastic....a great speaker that comes with a wonderful case too. The case also keeps the speaker protected from sand at the beach! Maybe you should check with JBL directly about Windows 7. [ KAREN  Apr 21, 2014 ]
This speaker requires Bluetooth to pair it to a device so if your laptop has Bluetooth you can just pair it that way. Or you worst case scenario you have to use the aux port. All you need for that is an auxiliary cord. It will work with anything if you use that. Windows 7 has no effect on whether it works or not . [ AUSTEN  Apr 21, 2014 ]
Hi Nick, I've had this speaker about a year. it functions very well with no serious issues. The sound is clear and it plays louder then my Ipad. It pairs via Bluetooth or a single hard wired connection I am unaware of any difference using windows but I use Apple products so I'm not an expert . If you have Bluetooth the device will search out the speaker and ask to pair. If you agree it is automatic. From then on it should happen each time with little effort other then pushing a couple of power buttons. I hope this helps, Regards, Larry [ LARRY  Apr 21, 2014 ]
Maybe for the first time use. Generally it holds a (full) charge for a while-- probably for about 8 hours. I haven't noticed an issue with the flip in terms of battery life. Overall, I am very happy with the speaker. Sounds good, connects easily and had a good battery life. [ ROBERT  Jul 22, 2014 ]
Yes I'd say if you want it to last it's entire battery life. [ APRIL  Jul 22, 2014 ]
The first time you charge it.make sure its charged all the way..other wise use at will..and can use it while it chages and it wont affect the charge [ TARUIS  Jul 22, 2014 ]
The speaker does come with a little charge but it is best to fully charge it before use [ Thomas  Jul 21, 2014 ]
Yes you do have to charge it . The 3 hours that you are asking about is good but I charged mine for at least 8 hours I received my JBL before I went to work so I automatically put it on the charger. Plus also u might want to let it run down til the red blinks so it can charge fully once a month. I haven't had no problem with mine as of yet. The other thing is if you turn the volume up on the flip you can control it better from your phone or tablet versus using the volume button on the speaker. Hope this helps u EM from philadelphia , pa [ EMORY  Jul 21, 2014 ]
I charge it but not 3 hours just like a hour and it was ready to use it an love it i take anywhere [ ERICK  Jul 21, 2014 ]
yes great speaker [ HASSELL  Jul 21, 2014 ]
You will need to charge the JbL flip if you want to use it wirelessly for first time. If you can't wait, then simply plug it in and listen to music while it's charging. [ MARVELIA JIMENE  Jul 21, 2014 ]
No, if it's completely dead than you can plug it in for a couple of minutes and keep rocking out while its plugged in and charging. [ MARIA C  Jul 21, 2014 ]
