Our take on the JBL GT6-5

If you want speakers that'll make the most out of the power they're given, JBL's GT6 Series speakers are a smart way to go. They're sensitive enough to perk up the sound of a factory radio, but tough enough to handle an outboard amplifier too. These JBLs will impress you with their powerful bass, clear highs, and strong output.

Oversized cones, powerful tweeters
The GT6-5 2-way speakers employ 5-1/4" Plus One polypropylene woofer cones — with 30% more surface area than most other 5-1/4" speakers — to dish out the lows with accuracy and strength. The vented motor design keeps the speaker cool and operating efficiently when you've got the volume cranked. Each 1" titanium-laminate tweeter projects highs that'll sparkle over the sound of road and wind noise.

hard hitting

TimF from California,CA on 9/30/2015

I installed these in my old van, that had no door speakers, or any provision for door speakers at all, just flat door cards. The speakers are no too deep, and with a 9mm plywood mount and sound deadening, they are hard hitting loud speakers, very crisp treble, but not harsh. They are a joy to listen to, and are easily driven by my low powered head unit. The cross overs are small shrink sealed units, rather than boxes which makes them easier to mount.

Pros: Great sound, crisp highs, solid lows

Cons: amazing sound from 5 1/4 speakers, but drop off at 70hz, a good compromise...

Good buy

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For the price, you cannot go wrong with JBL. I have been using JBL speakers for 20 years in my home and was excited to try JBL speakers in the car. I was not disappointed in the least. The speakers offer decent lows but more importantly, clear mids and crisp clean highs. You'll only be disappointed if you're expecting them to sound like Mark Levinson or Paradigm speakers.

Pros: Clean, clear sound, fair handling

Cons: Does not handle low-range sounds very well; but then again, it's not designed to.

2004 Dodge Dakota
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Used the as replacement woofers for my 04 Dakota Quad Cab. A lot cleaner sound from the JBL's over the OEM speakers. Highs are nice and crisp. Original speakers were 6" so don't get quite as much bass. To use them in the front door requires re-using the OEM mourning bracket. The stock woofer is glued down to it so it is pain. Plus you have to trim one of tabs off the supplied spacer to fit the OEM bracket. Rear speaker installs were simple. Overall sound is a nice improvement for very small investment.

Pros: Nice highs, clean overall sound

Cons: Front door install tricky for 04 Dakota, less bass then OEM speakers

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Quick and easy replacement of my existing speakers that were starting to die off intermittently. By the way I see some users saying there was not enough bass response. My radio is not a high end unit but I still had to lower the bass boost because it was so strong. It appears some people don't know how to adjust the bass , mid range and treble on their car sound systems.

Pros: Quick and easay to do.

Cons: none

2001 Toyota 4Runner
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These are good, and nice looking speakers that are remarkably clear with good mids and highs. The bass is average because of the size. The construction seems durable and feels good quality. I think they would do best as back speakers. I did need special wire connecting terminals that weren't included to fit in my 2001 Toyota 4runner. Also the bracket was hard to work with at first.

Pros: mids, highs, doesn't distort with eq, build quality, compact size, price

Cons: bass, needed special terminals

Really decent speaker for the price, small size not meant for bass but does a good job at lower levels. Sounds good when used as the main front speaker with the topdown in a Jeep wrangler. Prompted me to buy the matching JBL 6.5 for the rear sound bar.

Pros: Sound good on a budget

Cons: None

I explained to the Crutchfield tech that I was looking for 51/4 speakers that will be played at a high volume because they are being installed in a convertible car. They recommended the JBL speakers. They do the job; couldn't ask for more at this price.

Pros: Clear sound at high volume

Cons: None

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Wow. The speakers replaced GM factory units that were disintegrated. I got 4 of these, 2 for front doors, 2 for rear doors. What a difference. I always loved Crutchfields offerings, but had no idea how great their packages really were. Not much guess work... all the instructions were simple, the kits included everything. But the speakers.... I can proudly say without a shadow of a doubt, these are some of the best speakers I could have bought. I am really pleased w them and considering their price point (cost) I am ecstatic. Way to go Crutchfield...Way to go JBL

Pros: sound...overall mount locations... build quality

Cons: none...hope they last a long time

Great small speakers, not great installation hardware supplied

2007 Toyota Corolla
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased a set of JBL GT6-5's (5-1/4 two ways) for my Corolla. Some feedback on the installation:-The adapters it came with said to use the screws that come with the speakers to mount the speakers, but the speakers did not come with screws. The speakers' documentation confirmed this. To mount the speakers, I purchased 8x of #4-40 screws (1 inch long), nuts and washers. I think these should be shipped with the product. Other than that, the speakers offered a noticeable increase in treble and crisper mid-range over my stock speakers. To give you an idea of my setup, I have them powered by an aftermarket stereo and they are supported by subwoofers in the trunk. Neutral point: 5-1/4" speakers look tiny, even compared to stock. I think this is the reason the bass is weak, but if your speakers are not visible and you have some bass in the back, this doesn't matter.

Pros: Higher highs and crisper mids than stock.

Cons: They do not come with mounting hardware.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Paired these with the JBL GT6-69 and the factory head unit in a Dodge 3500 crew cab. Nothing to brag about and they work ok. I thought they were a little lacking on bass but it could just be the power of the stock head unit. They sound ok and seem to do the job.

Pros: Price

Cons: Lacking on bass

Great Sound and Fantastic Value

2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I paired these with the GT6-69 6x9 speakers in my 2004 Monte Carlo SS. I used the factory head unit and amp and just hooked these speakers to the factory wiring for the speakers I replaced. I left the factory door tweeters in service as they actually had pretty good sound on their own. The sound is excellent. The clarity is truly impressive and the volume is good. Bass comes through clearly and the treble is great. I actually was able to change my EQ setting from Jazz or Country to Rock. With the factory speakers, Rock was always too muddy of a setting, despite the fact that I only listen to rock. These speakers sound great and you would probably have to spend a whole lot more to get anything better. I don't have any input for those who want to add an aftermarket amp, but if you're looking to clean up and improve your factory system, you can't go wrong with these speakers.

Pros: Great sound, great clarity, great price.

Cons: None.

Jason D from Kentucky on 1/27/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Speakers sound great, especially in comparison to paper factory speakers in a 20-yr old car! Don't expect a lot of bass, but what's there sounds tight and solid. Highs are good, too.

Cons: Crutchfield needs to get its information straight on what "fits" a 91 toyota corolla in the rear deck. I was told there were only two pair of speakers that would fit the back due to limited mounting height (tweeter) caused by close proximity of factory grills/covers. In fact, that limitation only existed in the front dash-mounted speakers. I could have had a wider variety from which to choose if I had been informed correctly.

Nice OEM alternative

2003 Toyota Celica GTS
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers were a pretty decent buy for the price before taxes. I bought them because they were JBL and were going into a 03 Celica GTS that had the JBL premium system. My sister owns the car and doesn't really listen to loud bass heavy music but the front passenger speaker's foam deterioated and seperated so that a flapping noise would kick in anytime the woofer moved. I figured a JBL speaker would be the right fit and would match the rest of the system. The master sheet was awesome. I found every bolt and screw to remove and its explanation of the process was very clear. The speaker brackets that came with the new speakers were a pretty good fit but not perfect. I had to use some of the hardware from the old speaker setup to connect the wires since there is no harness available for Toyota applications from Crutchfield. This was not a big deal really just need some drilling and that was it. I fished the wire to the adapter I stole from the old speakers and soldered the exposed wires to the speaker terminal for a secuire connection and buttoned the door back up. I also swapped the driver side speaker to ensure balanced sound. These new speakers did not have as much bass as the factory ones but the treble seems more refined and the mids do sound better. If you crank up the bass to its highest levelt these do sound good. One thing to note though is that the speaker is attached via foam instead of rubber (like in high end speakers) to the basket. Great JBL OEM replacement though.

Pros: Easy install and fit.JBL quality. Sizeable magnet base. Mounting hardware and brackets were very useful. Directions were the best part!

Cons: Foam attachment to basket. Not the best for bass but still very decent. Would reccomend a subwoofer if you just need that tooth rattling experience.

great sound just what I needed

Speaker's Up-Grade Ford E-250

rlud from Wisconsin on 1/21/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Crutchfield ***** I recently did an up-grade of all (4) speakers on my new 2110 Ford E-250 Van, And I have to tell you, it was 'painless' Crutchfield gives you everything you'll need, wire harness adapter cables, adapter plates. And a full description of installation.. And It was a "Snap" overall time 1.2 Hours!! Now the good part! :-) After willingly, tossing out those awful OME Ford speakers out... I turned on my Satt./Sirius/C.D./Navigation/Mp3 Radio. And slowly turned it up and up! to all the way to the Radio's full capacity!! And it was not only clean, clear, crisp it was very Bass responsive with the JBL'S I had installed at the two rear of the van's door panels. I have to tell it was like night to day! "Wonderful" I'm pleased and Happy and now its a whole new driving experience when I drive my Ford Van. I will recommend!! when you do install at the rear door panels, 'Please' do Invest in some sound dead dynex mat as the JBL'S are more bass responsive than the Alpines in the front two doors with 'baffles' And that will eliminate any thin wall door rattling and will give you much more of what, you would normally expect! from the JBL Speaker's. Overall Crutchfield you have exceeded my expatiation's that's for sure signed... Hearing and Feeling The Music!! "SWEET" (*****) That's my Rating for the Crutchfield Co.

Pros: Full understanding of what I wanted to do and matched to perfection!!!

Cons: 0/ZIP/NONE...

easy installation
