Our take on the JBL GT6-69

If you want speakers that'll make the most out of the power they're given, JBL's GT6 Series speakers are a smart way to go. They're sensitive enough to perk up the sound of a factory radio, but tough enough to handle an outboard amplifier too. These JBLs will impress you with their powerful bass, clear highs, and strong output.

These JBLs will impress you with their powerful bass, clear highs, and strong output.

Oversized cones, powerful tweeters
The GT6-69 3-way speakers employ 6"x9" Plus One polypropylene woofer cones — with 30% more surface area than most other 6"x9" speakers — to dish out the lows with accuracy and strength. The vented motor design keeps the speaker cool and operating efficiently when you've got the volume cranked. Each speaker sports a titanium-laminate tweeter and super-tweeter for highs that'll sparkle over the sound of road and wind noise.

Product Highlights:

  • 3-way 6"x9" speakers (pair)
  • Plus One design polypropylene woofer
  • foam surround
  • titanium laminate tweeter and super-tweeter
  • grilles with magnetic JBL badges included
  • power handling: 5-70 watts RMS (210 watts peak power)

  • sensitivity: 94 dB
  • depth: 2-15/16"
  • warranty: 1 year

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The speakers sound good to me. really can't say more than that. I installed them myself and found that all the extra items that crutchfield gave me to get the job done and the instructions on how to install in my 2002 mini made the process very easy. I had no problems swapping the speakers as the screw holes lined up perfectly.

Pros: easy installation

Cons: none

Great Sound!!!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed these in my Nissan Titan Crew Cab. I have an Alpine double din GPS/DVD head unit with a 4 channel Audison Amp driving all for JBL speakers. Also, using an Alpine 500 mono amp powering a pioneer 10" thin sub in the back. With a high end amp you do not have to spend a weeks paycheck on a pair of Focals or German Maestro's. Take my word, JBL makes a very nice product for a reasonable price. Coupled with Crutchfield's awesome customer service , this purchase was a " No Brainer"!!

Pros: Very bright clear sound with good bass!!!

Cons: None

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The sound is clear and loud, but its seems mids dominate the highs. Maybe its my Mtx powered sub (no low bypass filter) but the vocals are really loud, I love crisp highs and these speakers don't produce that. But for the money it will work for now. I rate them a 3.5 out of five.

Pros: Good loud and clear sound

Cons: Mids dominate the highs, highs not real crisp.

bought the speakers with smaller magnets, to drive with 52 watt stereo, they drive great, and loud, sound is very good and clear.

Pros: sound great, and somewhat waterproof, since they were installed in a boat.

Cons: no hardware, no screws or wire to install.

I bought these speakers to replace the stock 6x9 door speakers set up as bass only. My system got a stronger and fuller bass sound with just this swap, and then a further improvement when upgrading the reciever. Great speakers, especially for the price.

Good sound for a decent price

JoeOr from Portland, OR on 8/7/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I picked these for a cheap replacement over stock because of the sensitivity rating and price. They sound very good for the price, and for being run off the stock head unit. The build quality is decent, and the mounting depth is fairly shallow, plus its a 3 way speaker. They dont require a lot of power, which is nice for those not running an amp, and the bass (depends on location) should be adequate for someone who plan on not running subs.

Pros: Cheap price, sensitivity, low power, sounds good

Cons: Foam surround

Using these bad boys in 6x9 insulated boxes and they kick good with only the reciever power pushing them. I got them mainly for the name/price and being 3-way in hopes they would complement a 12' MTX sub powered by Alpine 300watt amp. They sound great and for the price who could go wrong.

Simply amazing. These speakers were well worth the money. As soon as I got them in and turned on my car to check them, I immediately noticed a difference. The bass is decent and they are fairly clear even at higher volumes. My only complaint is that they didn't fit perfectly in my 2000 cavalier with the factory brackets but I made it work.

Pros: Very good speakers for the price.

Cons: None so far.

These speakers are pretty good sounding. I had no trouble installing them, and immediately upon installing, I noticed a crisper clean sound. They have less bass than my stock speakers, but that's because stock paper cone speakers are not tuned to sound very crisp. Stock speakers generally have more bass in them to fool you into thinking they sound good, but it is quite a muddy bass. I would highly recommend these speakers for the money.

2005 Honda Accord DX
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We bought my wife a 2005 Accord DX. The car didn't have rear speakers because it's the cheap model :) Found these on Crutchfield and the reviews were favorable especially for the price. I went ahead and ordered them and got the Honda adapters included when I ordered which really made the decision to go with Crutchfield easy. I got the speakers faster than I expected and they were a snap to install! The "how to" on the Crutchfield site made it feel like I had been doing this kind of thing many times before. Nothing to solder as the adapters fit perfectly. One of the 4 holes to mount the speaker didn't line up with the factory holes but I already knew that going in based on the Crutchfield "how to" These speakers make the whole car sound 100% better! A good speaker at a great price with fantastic support. I'm a believer! They are on the back deck and have plenty of base. They sound clear and they are a huge improvement to the car. I am now going to get new speakers for my car because of the improvement I saw with these in her car.

Pros: Crutchfield support and customer reviews! Inexpensive and great sound for the price point Adapters included from Crutchfield made installation a snap

Cons: I have no cons that I can think of.

Very Satisfied

2001 Dodge Ram
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I ordered this from Crutchfield primarily because I knew they would provide the wiring adapters. Since I knew the wires on my 2001 Ram were barely long enough to connect to the stock speakers, I felt it would be worth the wait to have these shipped rather than pick up something at a local store. The fact that the speakers were half price and were shipped for free also helped. Installation went very easy. I literally had both speakers installed in the doors and the door panels back on in 20 minutes. Granted, I had experience taking the panels off but the wiring adapters saved me from having to solder extension wires on the factory harness. Sound was very good. Speakers fit the openings well but the screw holes were off just slightly. No drilling required. Just had to start one screw on each speaker at a slight angle to get it to grab.

Pros: Crutchfield supplied wiring adapters, price, sound.

Cons: None

2005 Dodge Neon
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was worried that a pair of speakers at this price would not be much of an improvement. Some reviews suggested lack of bass. I have a 2005 Dodge, Neon. I surface mounted these on the back window shelf behind the back seat by cutting holes in the shelf material. The shelf material was thin particle board stuff with thin carpet-like material on the surface and thin foam-like acoustic on the other side. I traced the speaker shape from part of the box the speakers came in and cut the shelf with a cargo knife. I didn't want the speakers to be buried beneath the shelf material. I now have crystal clear highs and rich lows. These speakers must be much more efficient because they're noticeably louder than the old stock speakers (I haven't replaced my front speakers yet).

Pros: Perfect speakers. It would be difficult to imagine much improvement buying a more expensive speaker.

Cons: No instructions for surface mount. You're on your own.

2000 Honda Accord
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

these speakers carry awesome bass and were a HUGE improvement over the factory speakers in our 2000 Honda Accord EX. with the new JBL's in the rear deck, the factory speakers in the doors and the factory tweeters in the dash, the sound is well balanced. my son had an unused Sony amp in the garage and I toyed with the idea of hooking that up. don't bother, these don't need to be amped. the head unit I have is only 18W/channel and it is plenty loud with zero distortion. I went JBL because of their reputation, but I was a little skeptical because of the low price. worry not, the quality is there.

Pros: crisp, clean bass with no amp needed. easy install. big, heavy magnets and quality construction.

Cons: it's probably the EQ on the head unit, but the tweeters can be a little sharp at times - too many other factors to blame the speakers for sure.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had a long discussion with the Crutchfield sales team about upgrading the speakers in a 1012 Chrysler 300 WITH the Alpine 6 speaker system. The Alpine system is a 2 ohm system and decent except for the lack of highs, as it only has the dash speakers for this task. I was looking to upgrade to the 3-way JBL's as JBL has always treated me good. The technician stated that with the JBL 4 ohm going in the 2 ohm system you will notice a volume drop. It is hard to describe the amount of volume drop, and corelate that to real time sound without physically hearing it. I ordered and installed them in the front door and they fit, but had difficulty with the mounting holes alignment, as they are not exact. The volume difference was HUGE! Way to low, about half the volume of the stock speakers. I had to put my ear to them to make sure they were actually on. I had to remove them and put the stock Alpine 6x9's back in. I can not say that the JBL's were bad, but the system conditions are to extreme to use due to the 2 ohm vs. 4 ohm situation. I am a big fan of JBL, but not these in a 2 ohm environment as they are obviously not intended to be on a 2 ohm system. .

Pros: Packaged well, and delivered on time.

Cons: None.

Got these to finally replace the 13+ year old factory speakers that haven't work for the last three years. I'm enjoying listening to music in my car again and these speakers sound great. First set of JBLs but know their reputation from many years of working with sound systems. Highly recommend. And thanks to Crutchfield for making it so easy to install.

Pros: Great sound. Easy install.

Cons: Plugs on the wiring harness were very tight and hard to install on the speakers. Although it said they would fit, mounting holes didn't match up.

Pros: Good price. Easy to install. Good sounding speakers for the price.

Cons: No Complaints.

Excellent Value

AustinC from Chattanooga, TN on 6/29/2013

2005 Chevrolet Blazer

These are wonderful speakers, especially for the price. They have plenty of bass for 6x9s. They won't sound like subs, but they will certainly be enough for most people's tastes. The mids and highs sound great also. It is a well balanced speaker. For a budget system, you really can't do any better. Pair these with the JBL 6.5s and an Alpine head unit and I guarantee you will be satisfied.

Pros: Balance, Sound Quality, Bass, Price

Cons: Crutchfield said they wouldn't fit in the car I put them in (1994 Camry), but all you had to do was re-drill the holes. Not a real con of the speaker though, because it has none.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The stock speakers in my 2000 Honda accord didn't sound too bad after I installed a new head unit, but I was ready to upgrade and got these speakers. They sound absolutely incredible the bass is ridiculous, but tight and clear at the same time. I know this is super cliche, but truthfully I heard parts of songs that I never heard before. The only issue I could possibly have against them is that the holes didn't match up, but that's a minor problem. Overall I would most definitely recommend these to anybody that is looking to upgrade their system.

Pros: Crazy bass and clarity without an amp. Fantastic value at the price

Cons: Holes didn't match up, but that's not a big deal.

Nice sound, MUCH better than factory stuff these replaced. Now I need some components for the front doors as these can be driven much harder than the factory speakers without distortion! One thing- be careful when installing as the magnets are very strong, and one of the speakers stuck to the metal on the rear deck of my car and when pulling it off I scratched the tint on my back window! I have no idea what most are complaining about as far as lack of bass with these units. it might be the lack of door shell space in the vehicles they are putting them in, as the reviews go. I installed into a 2001 Dodge Ram Quad Cab in the front doors, perfect swap, used the OE rain shields, NO BOXES behind them, but made sure the vapor barrier was intact and secure to the door when finished, (this creates your own enclosure for the speaker to bass flex). Clean, crisp, great sound from JBL, ran on a Kenwood receiver KDC amp and they rock w/o a sub.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these speakers to replace a blown rear speaker in a 2007 Honda Accord. They are much nicer than the factory speakers and they sound fantastic. The speakers were very easy to install and hooking up the cables was a snap (literally) with the included wiring harness. Next step..replace the factory speakers in the door so I am surrounded by great sound

Great Replacement Speaker, excellent value

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Replaced my stock GM speakers on my 2009 Saturn Aura with these. They sound great and were a great value too. Note that the box did not contain the necessary self tapping screws needed to secure the speakers to the rear deck, but picked them up at a local hardware store. Also, the Crutchfield wiring harness was great and their installation directions were invaluable. Thanks Crutchfield!

Pros: Great speakers for an excellent value. Very happy so far.

Cons: None at this point.

Big improvement, good value

These were much better than the factory speakers in my 2000 civic. There is a lot more bass (not to be compared to a sub though) and overall output. I was very pleased with the quality construction as well.

Pros: Great construction Great sound, very clear

Cons: None

Cons: I couldn't use the 4 screws for them. 2 screws per each.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Speakers sound very good - in fact, excellent for the price. With a little work on the speaker bracket, they would have been a 100% perfect fit for the stock Toyota speaker openings. I was able to reuse the plastic hold-down frames without actually screw mounting the speakers to the rear metal shelf. It would have been nice if they had included a foam seal to install between the speaker and metal shelf to absorb any stray vibration.

Very easy install and the instructions supplied were great. One mounting hole on each speaker required a little modification, but this is to be expected. As far as the speakers themselves, could not be happier. Great sound and more than sufficient base.

Pros: Great fit, sound quality, and ease of installation

Cons: None

Excellent value. Hard to beat the depth, range and clarity, at even relatively low power amperage (about 30-40 RMS). You do need a minimum of about 30 Watts RMS, or they will not activate--- sorry for the Ram guy-- probably getting much less from most stock systems.

OK but not great...might be due to lack of power/amp

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

They are OK but I think I expected a bit more bass. It may be that I need to add an amp since I'm using a factory head unit. I did get a lot out of the polks in the dash and in the front doors, but these in the rear doors I hoped for more out of. I'll be adding and MS-8 to my 2010 Dodge RAM 1500 crew cab and see if that gets me there (processor/amplifier that self tunes). If not, then a sing sub woofer should do the trick.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This three way speaker has far exceeded my expectations. With the power provided from my deck, the JVC KWR900BT, this speaker pounds like a small sub while delivering clear mids and highs. The install on my 2002 Mazda Protege was easy because Crutchfield provided a wiring harness that allowed me to simply plug it in and instructions on how to gain access to and remove the factory speakers from the rear deck. If you're looking for a speaker that performs well and won't cost you much, your search is over.

Pros: Great performance in Highs, Mids, and Lows. Great Price.

Installed no problem in 2000 Civic EX Coupe. Took an hour or so. I should have replaced the factory speakers years ago! Civics generally EZ to work on, but not the back speakers. USE instructions supplied by Crutchfield.

Pros: Sound good

Cons: Civics are kinda loud on the highway.. I'll need to add sound insulation before I can really hear the music.

Paired these with the JBL GT6-5 and the factory head unit in a Dodge 3500 crew cab. Nothing to brag about and they work ok. I thought they were a little lacking on bass but it could just be the power of the stock head unit. They sound ok and seem to do the job.

Pros: Price

Cons: Either require more power then the factory unit or are lacking in bass.

Excellent speakers for the price, sound great with toyota factory cd/radio,major upgrade from factory junk, better control over low end and as they are 3 way,a crisper mid and high end, installed with XTC foam baffles

Pros: excellent price great sound

Cons: Crutchfield goes above and beyond with tech help and harness/brackets,however for my 2011 toyota corolla s the supplied speaker harness was way too short and i had to splice with factory harness to reach speakers

2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I paired these with the GT6-5 5 1/4 speakers in my 2004 Monte Carlo SS. I used the factory head unit and amp and just hooked these speakers to the factory wiring for the speakers I replaced. I left the factory door tweeters in service as they actually had pretty good sound on their own. The sound is excellent. The clarity is truly impressive and the volume is good. Bass comes through clearly and the treble is great. I actually was able to change my EQ setting from Jazz or Country to Rock. With the factory speakers, Rock was always too muddy of a setting, despite the fact that I only listen to rock. These speakers sound great and you would probably have to spend a whole lot more to get anything better. I don't have any input for those who want to add an aftermarket amp, but if you're looking to clean up and improve your factory system, you can't go wrong with these speakers.

Pros: Great sound, good volume, clear bass and treble, great price.

Cons: None.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these for my 2003 Dodge Ram quad cab. The website said they didn't fit, but the measurements were correct. Called and spoke with Sid. Main reason they say these won't fit is the width. They said I would have to modify teh opening a little. Received within 2 days. Against Crituchfield's installation recommendations, I removed the plastic spacer from the factory speakers and installed on the new speakers. Doing this spaced them away from the door and they fit without problems. The screw holes aren't perfect, but the speakers are flat on the door and don't rattle. These speakers sound great. I have the factory radio installed right now, until I purchase the mounting kit to install my Alpine. Bass is great. I can turn it all the way up and they do not distort. Highs and mids are present, they were not before, especially at high volume. I love these and would purchase again.

Pros: Great sound

Cons: none

2002 Dodge Intrepid
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Over all I love sounds from these JBLs. Using the trunk's volume, the bass sounds full and balanced. These JBLs sound a whole lot better than the factory speakers they replaced! The only flaw seems to be the open cone design in installations where the speaker grill is not used. Make sure you clean up the metal shavings after drilling and any debris on the deck after installation. The speaker magnet and just vibration from normal use is strong enough to pull any dirt and metal shavings right into the open cone causing problems.

Pros: These speakers sound great in my Intrepid. Very well balanced, handle a good amount of power, blend very nice with the front factory speakers. I am able to adjust the bass and highs for a nice full sound. I removed the top interior trunk lining allowing the speakers to use the full volume of the trunk. Make sure they are inphase with the fronts.

Cons: For two of the four screws on each speaker I needed to drill holes. The connectors I was sent did not fit factory connectors. Cut off factory connectors and solder wired directly to speaker. After two weeks of use, started noticing some distortion/poping in the bass. Determined debris was getting into the open cone dropping down to the magnet interferring with cone movement.

Plus One Woofer Cones: Each speaker uses a larger cone than other speakers of the same size. This is accomplished by using a unique basket design and hi-roll surround. The Plus One design offers greater bass output and an increase in efficiency.

Titanium Laminate Diaphragms: Each speaker uses a titanium laminate diaphragm tweeter and a titanium laminate diaphragm midrange for fast transient highs with lower distortion.
