Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking for some decent 2-way speakers to replace my factory speakers that weren't too expensive for my Crown Victoria. I already have a JBL stereo instead of the factory stereo and found these JBL speakers on Crutchfield's website. They were reduced $20.00 AND I got the wiring harnesses for FREE! I couldn't have found a better deal anywhere that was new and in the original box. Thanks Crutchfield! I'll be back!

Pros: Great sound, factory-like fit, free wiring harnesses with my order.

Cons: None

I have never reviewed anything before. I have also bought a lot of speakers over the years. These are hands down the worst I have ever bought. The stock 15 year old speakers sound identical. I purchased as a replacement in my work truck with stock head unit. I wanted cheap, high"ish" sensitivity speakers. Do not waste your time. Zero bass and distorted high end. I also would like to add that Crutchfield is 1st class. I have ordered from them many times and i have never been disappointed. I have no idea why so many people rated this 5 stars.....

Pros: Easy instal

Cons: Terrible sound

Just installed these into front and rear 2014 F-150 XLT SuperCrew cab. They sound decent. I'm sure if I had an amp and a better radio other than OEM radio they would perform much better than the OEM speakers that came with the truck. I had to lower my bass level and raise my Mid Tones level to stop them from sounding a bit on the buzzy side. Once I lowered bass and raised mid tones all sounds good. Pretty much the same as the OEM speakers, so probably need an amp and new radio to push the true sound of these. I am satisfied.

Pros: Clearer treble and mid tones over the OEM speakers

Cons: Needs an amp and maybe a better radio to get the full effect of these speakers. Had to lower Bass levels to stop them from buzzing at higher volumes.

Got these speakers to replace the OEM ones as they were no longer working. I left the OEM stereo in place, but the speakers sound pretty good. If you turn up the volume, you can tell it needs more power from the stereo. Not interested in getting great sound with this vehicle as it is just a daily driver. Would definitely recommend to those needing OEM replacements.

Great sound, detailed and clearer than stock! No grills - no big deal - installed behind factory front speaker cover. Gave minus 1 star because it was not a "direct" replacement for my front door in a 2007 Ford F-150. Two metal tabs on the outer edges of the speaker frame needed to be cut off, otherwise it wouldn't fit into stock opening. Overall, good value even with having to modify.

Pros: Detailed sound, value

Cons: Modification needed for 2007 Ford F-150 front door

You don't need to spend more money on speakers really - these speakers sound great! Much better than the OEMs I replaced in my 2013 F150. Sound is crisp and clean and installation very easy - even easier with the wiring harness Crutchfield supplied. I'm still missing bass but that's a problem with the stock amplifier not the speakers. I wouldn't be able to tell the difference between these speakers and fancy ones that cost twice as much.

Pros: Great sound Inexpensive Easy installation / perfect fit / drop-in replacement

I have been out of the audio world for quite a while but my 16 year old son has his first vehicle and a stereo was big on the list. This required some investigation which he started on the web. After some conversations on what he was finding I told him to look up Crutchfield so see what they had. He picked out a stereo and it was a breeze to install and could be happier. The OEM speakers were weak so we went back to Crutchfield and these JBL's are great and another easy installation with the kit provided. Crutchfield is well worth the money and they have great tech info and the products are great as well.

Pros: Great products. Great prices. Great tech info. Great website.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First time installing speakers into any vehicle. While I'm a pretty good mechanic with decades of experience (ATV, Tractors, Trucks, etc.), I've never even thought about fooling with an audio system before. I have a degree in electronics but I'll be honest, screwing around with a vehicles audio system just never appealed to me before because I was afraid of screwing up the interior or door panels while attempting to remove them to access the speakers. Crutchfield's clear instructions really calmed my fears along with YouTube videos showing the actual process. This alone confirmed that I could perform the upgrade with ease and that I stood a 99% chance of success. The adapter harnesses made the process go along quickly! Crutchfield also suggest the needed tools you might need to complete the installation which makes the whole ordering process also a breeze! I installed these into my Dad's 2004 Ford F250 Super Duty (Standard Cab - 8ft Bed) as a Christmas present (along with the Dual XR4120 audio receiver). Needless to say, this combination blows the stock radio/CD player and speakers away. The stock speakers sounded thin compared to these speakers which make the music sound much richer with deeper/clean low-end and sharper voices! The AM/FM tuner is much better than the stock radio and pulls in certain radio stations cleanly that the other just wouldn't! Kind of regretting not performing this upgrade sooner :O)

1995 Dodge Dakota
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The JBL Stage 8602 replaced a 22 year old factory pair of rear speakers in the extended cab of a 1995 Dodge Dakota pick-up. Did not realize how bad the old speakers sounded until the new JBLs were installed. Inexpensive, the JBLs have much better bass, and the midrange was distinct and very clear. The existing Alpine dash unit was easily adjusted to bring out the best in the JBLs, and treble rim shots were amazing. "Better Man" was the first song to come across the radio, and Eddie Vetter never sounded better. Best money ever spent on a vintage vehicle!

I bought these as a fairly cheap replacement for factory speakers and was hoping for them to sound a little better then stock. But at 75% and above the highs have a lot of distortion. The lows and mids sound about the same as factory. Would not recommend. You get what you pay for.

Pros: Cheap. Easy installation. Sounds good at low volume

Cons: Highs destort badly at mid to high volume.

My thoughts ; Looks well constructed for the price with good cone and rubber moldings. , coaxial basket is normal and not to big for door panel . sound is clear and price point is good compared to other brands. compared to rockford fosgate's when turned up sound a little distressed and the JBL's don't; just a a little high on tweeters but that can be adjusted by you stereo deck down. Over all bang for your buck pretty awesome. Another bonus point is you get the wiring harness which makes it a lot neater install. I would buy again .

Pros: well made material

Cons: maybe a magnet rubber covering. , especially in door panel.

Purchased these to replace a blown factory speaker. After replacing both rear speakers with these, I had to adjust the fader to almost all the way rear to match the balanced sound I previously had with all four factory speakers. So these must be less sensitive or something. For the price, I'm not complaining, as this was far cheaper than purchasing one speaker from the dealer. If I was looking to install an upgraded sound system, this however, would not be something I would purchase.

I'll start by saying I love JBL - both my recording studio and home theater are all JBL, so I naturally went to them first when looking at replacing my car speakers after one was damaged. Unfortunately, these have widely missed the mark, and I have no idea what all of these 5 star reviewers are hearing. I've attached the frequency response graph from my 2001 Ford Escape with no enhancements from the receiver (no bass boost, flat eq). The RTA-M microphone was placed at ear level between the driver and passenger seats, all doors closed, with only the front speakers active. This response accurately shows what I was hearing in these speakers - all tweeter, some bass, with mids being basically non-existent. I gave these speakers 2 weeks to avoid any "they needed to be broken in" responses, but there was so much treble they were hurting my ears. It wasn't even good treble, very harsh, and no amount of the reciever's 13 band EQ was making a difference. The difference between the average level of low-mid (about 65 dB in the graph) and average level of tweeter (2k-18k; about 78 dB) is a whopping 12dB - effectively double in "volume." Though the testing wasn't very thorough and is only really valid for a 2001 Ford Escape - there is no possible way these speakers sound smooth in any listening environment. I've been an audio engineer for many years (B.S. & M.S. in Audio Engineering Technology), and these are without a doubt, the most imbalanced (worst) speakers I have ever heard.

Pros: If you could stand bleeding ears from the treble, these actually have a pretty decent bass response.

Cons: The tweeter is so overpowered they were hurting my ears. Severely lacking in midrange.

For the price these were excellent factory upgrades which were all I was looking for, the highs and lows sound better than the OEMs with my aftermarket (Blaupunkt Austin 440) stereo. They fit perfectly in the rear doors of my '05 F150. The center mounting tab has to be either snipped off or folded up for the speakers to fit in the front doors. Minor issue.

Great sounding speakers especially for this price point. The OEM speakers on my 2010 Mustang were in terrible shape, rattling, cracking, and popping, especially with the bass turned up past half way. These JBL speakers fit perfectly in the front doors and the rear deck (I left the OEM subs in the doors) . The stereo system sounds so much cleaner and clearer than it did with OEM speakers with none of the distortion.

Easily fit in locations perfectly. Put them in a week ago so still breaking them in. So far not much for bass, hope I can get a little more out of them. But the sound other then that is much better then factory! I am running factory head unit, for now.

Pros: Got them on sale, fit was spot on, can hear what I was missing.

Cons: Very little bass, but could be due to factory deck. But still only been a week

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought these to replace an previous aftermarket Sony Xplod 4-way speaker rated at 190 peak and 35W RMS in my 2003 Tacoma. I like the fact that these run up to 60W RMS so I feel more confident that it won't blow out like the Sony did. Sound wise, it's about the same sound quality out of the box maybe it will sound slightly better once they get broken into. The tweeter gives out nice highs and since I have a compact subwoofer, it wasn't really an issue for bass output on the speaker. I'm running these speakers through the deck amp, no additional power to speakers. Don't expect crazy sound out of these, but they definitely produce better sound than the factory speakers. Great price too and reliable brand!

Pros: Cheap Good sound quality Good RMS power ratings

Sound great installed in 2010 Ford Taurus limited front doors. Instructions were clear but once you do the driver door the other doors are a breeze. Taking out the wiring from harness was fairly simple although it took me a bit to figure out how to remove the door lock harness. I never could get the door handle cable removed but not necessary if you remove all other wiring you can get around it. Picked up a trim removal kit, worked well. I wasn't sure if I need the cover off the factory speakers so I installed with out it.

Pros: Sound is great for the price and I actually got them in 1 day! The fact they give the adapters & instructions is awesome.

Cons: None so far new installation

Purchased as replacement speakers for front doors of a 2015 Ford Taurus with factory radio. Installation instructions were very close; however, a Torx bit was required for removing existing speakers from doors. New speakers definitely add more bass than factory, midrange is adequate, and better than the factory speakers. Since this is a company car, shared by a group of people, I will now need to work on my boss to approve replacing rear door speakers, as the front speakers now make the rear speakers sound bad in comparison.

Sound great, even without an amp. Built in tweeter helps with the highs. Plenty enough bass for me, as most of my music does not hit hard enough to worry about it. Easy to install with minor adjustment, as I had to bend two of the mounting tabs on each speaker to allow a flush fit in my molded door panels. Other than that, with the use of wiring adapters, they dropped in and were working within an hour.

Pros: Sound good and price was right as I bought them on sale. They fit my truck perfect with minor adjustment (see review).

Cons: Will distort with too much volume, but I also have no amps installed, so could be moot.

1995 Ford Ranger Install

Randy from Midlothian, VA on 6/17/2017

2012 Ford Mustang
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I wanted some replacement speakers for a 1995 Ford Ranger single cab. I had a new Pioneer stereo laying around so I put that in as well. I was very impressed with the sound! I've installed quite a few stereos in vehicles (this was actually my 3rd Ranger install) and this was the first time I really didn't think the vehicle needed a subwoofer. Between the extra power of the Pioneer head unit, small cab of the truck, and good low frequency response of the JBL's, my cousin's son's system is really complete with only these 4 speakers. And that's good because there really is no extra room for a sub in those single cab Ford Rangers. Bought the speakers on a great sale at Crutchfield. Often times Crutchfield isn't the cheapest price-wise but is very competitive by the time you add the speaker adapters and install instructions. This particular sale, however, Crutchfield was the cheapest around AND still included the instructions and adapters. I did have to trim off a couple of the screw mount holes on the rear speakers but some wire cutters easily take care of that. As far as installing them in a '95 Ford Ranger, it's easy. Older vehicles like this that have manual windows, no steering wheel controls or voice control, etc are so much simpler to install stereos. My cousin's son couldn't be happier. He went from a tape player with 22 year old factory speakers to a full-featured stereo with Bluetooth and clear speakers with surprisingly low bass response.

Pros: Surprisingly deep bass response. Clear high notes. Multiple mounting tabs. Speaker wire adapters included. Quality JBL brand at a great price. Massive quality upgrade from stock.

Cons: Not terrible, but had to trim off the rear mounting tabs. Instructions didn't cover that for the Ranger so note this if you do have a Ford Ranger.

They're nice looking and weighty 6x8s but be careful! Make sure you support the connector ears from the bottom when pressing on the Metra connectors. The speaker contacts are only on a plastic base and it didn't take much pressure before one of the sides snapped. I engineered a fix with a zip-tie and then was more careful with the remaining tabs, but it was definitely a big "darn it" moment. Sound quality is fine, maybe just a touch improved over the factory Ford speakers. If you're looking for OEM-quality replacements, these fit the bill.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Good quality replacement speakers deserving of 4 stars but need to offset the way too many mindless 5 star reviews. I wasn't amazed by what I heard from them, but they were a slight improvement over the factory speakers that were laughably almost entirely plastic with a tiny magnet. Surprisingly, the factory single paper-cone driver speakers sounded decent, with high frequency extension you wouldn't expect without a separate tweeter, as ridiculously flimsy as they were. The JBLs did better them, which shouldn't have been too difficult, but it wasn't a hands down automatic wholesale improvement. However, with years of experience, speaker buying is a completely hit or miss endeavor, and these JBLs are well made, utilitarian design (which I love), and don't have any major distortions or annoying resonances (easier said than done, even today). For such a low price, you absolutely cannot do any better.

Pros: Affordable quality Balanced sound Well made No major resonances or distortion

Cons: Virtually none but speakers could be slightly more nuanced, with slightly more extended highs, balanced mid-range, deeper bass might be asking too much

I used these speakers to replace my 01 ford ranger door speakers. I bought 2 at first and did the front doors, then liked them so much I bought two more for the extended cab half doors. They are a good deal imo and I reccommend them for sure. Don't expect extreme performance on bargain price speakers but these are massive improvements over paper cone stock speakers. After putting these in with a new head unit, the sound is very clear and much louder. They aren't huge bass speakers really so if you want big boom you'll need a sub and at that point why not get better speakers anyway. In all these are great for simple stock replacement and will make a massive improvement over stock speakers.

Replaced a set of Kickers with these. I know a lot of people live Kicker, and that's fine...but I've been a JBL fan for over 20yrs, and I can tell you that they are still putting out quality products. These speakers blow away the Kickers they replaced in loudness, clarity, and overall performance. I highly recommend to all those that are in need of 6x8's or any speaker really...to check out JBL first.

Improved Bass, But Treble Lacking...

JMH from Overland Park, KS on 1/18/2017

2008 Ford F-150
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The speakers felt lightweight and the metal frames, thin, about on par with the cheapo OEM speakers. Also, the frames don't have foam around the entire perimeter, only on the bottom half, while the OEMs have foam all the way around. Installation was easy, but I almost broke one of the metal spades while trying to push on the Crutchfield-supplied wiring harness connector :-( The speakers have more bass, but lack sufficient treble in my standard cab (w/clamshell rear doors) truck. If you want a more noticeable difference in sound quality, look past these speakers.

Pros: The bass is better, installation is easy, the open-box price was attractive.

Cons: The treble isn't as good; overall sound is a bit muddy.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased these speakers to replace the factory rear and upper front door speakers that went with my Shaker 500 sound system in my 2007 Mustang GT. It was a bit of an ordeal getting the rear speakers in but it was well worth the effort. The combination of the front and rear speakers sounds great with my new Sony WX900BT receiver. The only complaint I had was that the speakers for the front door did have to be modified. You have to remove the lower tab for a retaining screw before the speaker will sit flat in the door bracket. This tab is not needed for this installation so I trimmed it off with my Dremel and it fit perfectly. I did call the line for installation assistance but Crutchfield had no documentation indicating that any type of modification was needed. It took me a few minutes to figure out the problem but once the minor modification was done, it fit perfectly. For that it doesn't get a fifth star. Otherwise I love them.

Appears to be well made and suitable for my application due to the wattage requirement. However, the sound doesn't seem to be delivering as much of the high frequencies (2-way speaker) as compared to front door speakers (3-way) that I also upgraded. Could it be the car stereo? Could it be that the rear speakers don't get the same signal as that of the front speakers? I'm not sure but those are the variables I was thinking about. However, when all of those speakers are working altogether, it sounds a lot better than just the factory speakers which is flat.

My car came with a rubber gasket. Be careful in using sealant due to the possibilities of corroding the electrical contact in the area. Consult or just read the back of any packet of the sealant you are about to buy. Sorry, I can't give an extant product. [ ERNESTO  Oct 18, 2017 ]

I bought these speakers for 2002 Mazda Miata. It came with wiring harness for free to fit original harness for the car. No cutting or drilling. As you say plug and play. They work and sounds great. If these speakers fit your vehicle and still have original speaker wiring harness. You'll have no problem. [ ERNESTO  Mar 13, 2017 ]
