Our take on the JBL OnBeat Venue LT

If you're the proud owner of an iPhone 5, iPad mini, 4th generation iPad®, 7 th generation iPod nano®, or 5 th generation iPod touch®, then you already know — the Lightning connectors of these Apple portables are incompatible with the standard 30-pin docks of older speaker systems.

A new system for new Apple devices

If you're the proud owner of an iPhone 5, iPad mini, 4th generation iPad®, 7th generation iPod nano®, or 5th generation iPod touch®, then you already know — the Lightning connectors of these Apple portables are incompatible with the standard 30-pin docks of older speaker systems.

The JBL OnBeat Venue LT solves that problem. It features a Lightning connector in its dock. Your brand-new Apple portable can charge up while you play your music through this powerful sounding speaker system.

Bluetooth wireless streaming

With the Venue, connectivity's not an issue. Sure, the built-in dock will only accommodate Lightning connector Apple portables, but any Bluetooth device can pair with this speaker system for wireless music playback. So older iPhones, iPads, and iPod touches can stream music to the Venue. And so can Android™ smartphones and tablets — as well as Bluetooth-compatible Mac® and PC laptops.

Get great sound from your player, docked or wireless

The Venue LT features two full-range speakers that deliver clear, full sound. Bass ports in the cabinet reinforce the low tones. Sophisticated electronics ensure the system reproduces your Bluetooth-streamed audio with the best possible sound. And with 30 watts of amplification, you'll get plenty of sound to fill just about any room.

Movie button

Streaming music from your smartphone or tablet via Bluetooth is a great way to listen hassle-free. With the Venue LT, streaming the soundtrack from the video you're watching or game your playing is just as handy. The system's Movie button switches the speakers from normal stereo to a much wider sound field that makes your viewing experience even more engaging.

Jbl on beat Venue Lt. It's ok...

Frank G from Cleveland, Ohio on 5/23/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Got 1 from outlet store, the scratch n dent unit was in pretty good physical shape. Plugged in my iphone 5 and fired it up.. The sound was decent, but lacking crisp treble that I'm used too, power was good, gets pretty loud, but distorts at higher volume, also had a problem with skipping on Bluetooth, I updated to lastest firmware using the free Jbl app, which was also buggy.. And still had skipping.. And for the price (new) $$$, too much, should have been $$... But anyways I have a 4 yr old kicker speaker dock that completely blows this thing away (Ik500) .. The newer version Ik501 would be a much better choice that the Jbl.. Oh, the base on the Jbl was ok..

Pros: Bluetooth, sleek design, volume level. Lightening dock.

Cons: Price for what u get, bass just ok, buggy firmware , no remote, distorts at higher levels, and for having dedicated tweeters, the highs are below average, u can adjust that in the few presets, but still not good enough. Also not portable, but for me the reason I sent it back is that the sound is not good enough from what I am used to.

JBL OnBeat Venue LT

FRGRAKL from Charlottesville, VA on 5/21/2013

I only use for Bluetooth with my cell phone. Works very well and I am very pleased. The sound is great even when I turn it up while I am working out. I love it and would recommend it.

Pros: Sound and ease to connect to my cell phone.

Cons: no radio.

Solid Unit

A from South Carolina on 4/17/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great sounding unit, better than I expected out of such small speakers. Got it for the lighting connector but ended up using mostly the bluetooth connection, it works and sounds very good.

Pros: Great sound

Cons: Could have more options. Can't dock with the cover I use.

Great Sound, but frustrating to use.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The sound alone makes me not want to exchange this for anything else, but this dock is far from perfect. The lightning connector doesn't work with any case, so you are stuck removing your case if you want to be able to charge while using this dock. I contacted JBL and they do not make an extender so that will forever be an issue. The 2nd issue is when you power off the unit, the bluetooth does not shut off until the unit goes to sleep. I find this to be incredibly inconvenient but the work around is you have to unpair the device from your phone when not in use. On the plus side, this unit does accept firmware updates via bluetooth so some of this functionality I'm sure will be fixed. Between the updatability and the sound, those are really the only two reasons I'm going to hold on to this.

Pros: Amazing sound, firmware upgradeable.

Cons: Lightning connector too short to work with any case, bluetooth does not shut off when unit is powered off, unable to pair multiple devices and switch between them (family shared dock).

Great system

Audio junkie from Plattsburgh, NY on 1/26/2013

This is a great system for the price. I've tried both Bose and Sonos docking systems and the quality of sound is amazing. The highs and mid range frequencies are extremely well represented without sounding thin and metallic. The lows are well represented and full but not quite as powerful as some of the more expensive units. At higher volumes the unit pushes all frequencies without distortion and can easily fill a large living room with ease. This units beats competitors within the same price range with ease. I was able to dock my iphone while it was in the case without incident. The bluetooth worked nicely as well. Very powerful unit.

Pros: Highs were very crisp and sharp. Mid range frequencies within the vocal range and acoustics were phenomenal and the low end frequencies were present down the the 80hz range. The controls were easy enough that even a child could operate this device. Only six buttons. This is great for leisure enjoyment or entertaining a small gathering with ease.

Cons: While the sound is powerful and clear, the lows end frequencies could be a little deeper and a little better represented. There is a bass boost button but that would mot be neccessary if an adequate equilizer were available. I also feel that a remote should have be included but I can make due by using bluetooth and controlling the volume from my iphone. Any other complaint about this product would be unjustified, or I should be obliged to procure a more expensive product. It's only $200!

Good sound; Everything else is lacking

Herbert F. from New York, NY on 1/23/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First, the pros. It looks good. Sleek, rounded, stylish. It sounds good. Now, the cons. Everything else. Only works with the very latest crop of iPods and even then the dock doesn't connect well and is too delicate. There is no remote. The controls are hard to read. I am exchanging it for the Kicker iKICK IK501, as per Crutchfield suggestion.

JBL Docks do not work with iPhone in a CASE

rocketegg from Denver, CO on 1/20/2013

JBL dropped the ball on this one, you have to remove your iPhone from ANY case before docking. They made the lightning connector too short to reach the phone even in the slimmest case. What a shame, they made a great product that becomes completely useless for the 99% of users that use a case to protect their phone. This could have been avoided simply by making the lightning connector stick out another 1/4".

Pros: Great quality if the phone would fit.

Cons: Have to remove your phone case to dock.

Updated dock and outstanding sound

Written by Ralph Graves, Staff Writer - Creative, on 12/27/2012 3:01:00 PM

The JBL OnBeat Venue LT features a Lightning connector dock, making it one of the few (at the time of this writing) speaker systems you can dock an iPhone 5 to. But the Venue does more than provide a home for your 2012 or later Apple portable. It also provides some great sound, too.

The Venue's simple enough to use right out the box — which was fortunate. We had a pre-release version to try out in the Lab, and there were no instructions with it! Controls are minimal, with just power, source selection (aux in, dock, or Bluetooth®), bass boost and movie mode.

The overall sound is nice and full as is. With the Bass Boost my music really packed a punch. And Movie Mode performed as I expected. It was easier to make out dialogue. The system was easy to pair with a Bluetooth device. In the Labs it took but a few seconds for our Android™ tablet to find the Venue and start streaming audio to it.
