Overview

Our take on the JBL Xtreme

The JBL Xtreme Bluetooth speaker delivers high-energy sound with massive bass from the music streamed from your smartphone or tablet. And the speaker's durable fabric covering and rugged rubber housing can handle splashes and gentle rain, and even running tap water. So you can use it poolside or out in the woods (just don't submerge it), and rinse it off afterwards. The speaker's connectors are protected behind a tight seal — just zip it shut.

So you can use it poolside or out in the woods (just don't submerge it), and rinse it off afterwards. The speaker's connectors are protected behind a tight seal — just zip it shut.

JBL Xtreme

To make the Xtreme fully water-resistant, just zip the seal to the access ports shut.

Big sound, bigger bass

If you want loud, you want an Xtreme. This brawny speaker system delivers clean, clear sound from its full-range drivers. And the dual passive radiators help the Xtreme kick out big, bold bass. Thanks to JBL's advanced digital signal processing, the Xtreme can project rich, full sound without distortion.

Bluetooth for one — or more

Stream music wirelessly from any smartphone or tablet via Bluetooth to the Xtreme. You can even pair it with up to three devices simultaneously so you and two friends can take turns being the DJ.

Download JBL's free control app to your Apple® or Android™ device, and you have even more options. Create your own impromptu sound system by wirelessly connecting two or more JBL Connect-enabled speakers — like the Xtreme.

Clear talk

When your paired smartphone receives a call, the Xtreme turns into a speakerphone. Its built-in microphone uses SoundClear® technology to minimize echo and filter out ambient noise. Both you and your caller will enjoy a conversation with clear, natural sound.

Charge ahead

The Xtreme delivers up to 15 hours of operation from its built-in rechargeable battery. And the speaker has dual USB charging ports for portable devices. So if your smartphone and/or tablet's running low on juice, the Xtreme can help keep the music playing.

Disappointing sound quality

Chris from Madbury, NH on 12/12/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have a Charge 3, and like the sound quality and versatility, but not the bass output of it. I had hoped that the Extreme would be the best of both worlds, but not so much. It does put out much more bass than the Charge, but it sounds muffled and disappointing. I kept it for the beach and bought a Harmon Kardon Onyx for my kitchen - it sounds incredible, looks great, and puts out a ton of accurate and high quality bass (as well as perfect highs). It also takes up less space on my counter.

Pros: Waterproof versatility

Cons: Muffled sounding bass and too bright highs

Great sound! While easy to set up and use, instruction manual is terrible. Could definitely use some work.

Pros: Great sound, good battery life. Perfect size and sound for every day use.

Cons: Manual is terrible. Needs work. While it's almost all self explanatory would be a nice to have.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got this speaker from Crutchfield because i got it at a great price and I heard it at another store but it was $150 more. It sounds better than my Sony srs-xb40 & srs-xb30. I can also play it in A.C. mode which it is a nice feature.. I want to purchase 1 more JBL Xtreme to hear it in stereo.. I got great customer service before I made the purchase from Andy at Crutchfield.

Pros: All around sound produce is the biggest plus

Cons: Haven't came across anything yet

Great sound!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Loud and Clear - I LOVE THIS SPEAKER It took me a while to make a decision to buy it. I did so much research that at some point i decided not to buy any wireless speakers. I went through many stores and listened most of wireless speakers. But, this JBL line had something that grabbed my attention. Once I ended up buying it - it was actually Exactly what i needed for any outdoor and indoor events or just simply enjoying the music whenever i want. Believe me - i am now the "favorite guest" to be invited to any event! I love that i can walk in with the style, by playing music as i walk in! It is really cool! The mood changes immediately. I love that you can place the speaker close or far - the sound is amazing anywhere you place it. Very loud! Very nice bass! (exactly what i was looking for). Actually, I first bought the JBL Charge 3 but, though it was a great speaker, it just did not have enough power/bass for my taste. The JBL Extreme speaks for itself! I took it with me on vacation, near ocean - every one loved the music on the beach!

Pros: Price

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A Great "BIG" sound from a small package! I had just completed restoring my VW Bus at considerable expense and labor. I wanted a sound system that wouldn't disturb the new custom interior. The JBL Xtreme seemed the perfect solution for having great sound that's both 'portable' and kept my Bus from being cut up. The strap allows me to hang the unit from the adjacent armrest and it links easily with my iPhone Pandora app. This is a very simple solution! Best of all, I can use the system while I'm working in the garage or on the beach! Fantastic!

Pros: Great 'BIG' Sound. Easy to connect. Goes Anywhere.

Cons: Tubular Shape has small feet, it wants to roll too easily.

Toby B. from Davidsonville, MD on 7/6/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This Bluetooth speaker is second to none. I also own the smaller JBL Flip 3 and the bass doesn't even come close to what this Extreme is capable of. One thing I've learned is that you get what you pay for in Bluetooth speaker sound quality. Caught this one on sale but even paying the full price would still be well worth it. Incredible speaker. Highly recommend!!!

Pros: Great bass Large but still very portable Easy to connect Robust charger cord

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great speaker so far it sounds great. I was looking for a blue tooth speaker to use with my echo dot only problem you have to turn on the extreme before you can use the echo dot. I had bought a Bose blue tooth speaker that turned on automatically when you used the echo dot but had trouble with it and returned it. It's pricey but Crutchfield put it on sale for so I bought it.

Pros: Great sound

Cons: Kind of pricey and won't turn on automatically when using echo dot.

Surprisingly Good Sound

Adam from Yorba Linda, CA on 6/17/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great find! I wanted to add sound to my 1965 Shelby Cobra but didnt want to cut holes or alter it in anyway. This wireless speaker placed between the seats uses the space behind the seats to develop incredibly deep bass and loud sound! Beat the Bose Mini Soundlink in side by side testing. Bluetooth for phone works surprisingly well.

Pros: Great sound, long lasting battery, good volume

Cons: 120 volt recharging only. Would be nice if it had a 12 volt DC cord too.

JBL Xtreme

Dan from Jacksonville Beach, FL on 5/17/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I love the sound of my JBL Xtreme and that is not why I gave it three stars. I feel like they are committing false advertising on their box. The box said 15 hours of battery life and I am only getting about 9 hours if I am lucky. Way too far off what they are claiming. But the sound quality is off the chain so I don't really know how to rate this. I guess I could have received a defective unit but when you hear it. It sounds so impressive. The bass is fantastic and maybe that's part of the drain because I listen to bass heavy music. It is supposed to be a music player of all kinds of music and therefore should live up to the 15 hour claim. I normally wouldn't complain but Its 6 hours off of what they are claiming it can do so you be the judge. The unit should last longer than 9 hours In my humble opinion.

Pros: The sound quality and the kicking base.

Cons: The Battery doesn't live up to the claim.

Fantastic Speaker!!

Tim from Florissant, MO on 12/1/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First I would like to say that I purchased the JBL Charge 3 just two weeks prior to picking up the JBL Extreme. I liked the JBL Charge 3 but I felt it was missing the midrange. The bass and treble are present on it but there is nothing blending the two frequencies together. It's like there is a gap in the sound signature. My Bose Soundlink Mini II has a more balanced sound signature and in the right position produces better bass sound than the JBL Charge 3. Enter the JBL Extreme. I picked it up during the one day sale on Cyber Monday and I'm glad I did. It has much better tuning than the JBL Charge 3 and it's not even close. I'm sure the larger size has something to do with it, the laws of physics do apply here, but it sounds so much better. The sound is fuller and it seems the entire frequency range is represented because I'm not hearing that gap in sound like I did with the JBL Charge 3. I like the boosted bass. To me it adds some richness to the sound. It's not overbearing, nor does it intrude too much into the midrange. For a comparison, I compared it to a different speaker I have. The JBL Extreme has more bass but the other speaker is much smoother and more refined. There is a crispness to sound that the JBL Extreme can't match. It may not reach as deep in the bass department but the bass is more detailed and layered. The other speaker is also more musical and is the better overall speaker to my ears. The JBL Extreme definitely a keeper though.

Pros: Excellent Bass Great indoors and outdoors Full sounding

Cons: For the price I paid for it none

The versatility/uses of the product can't be appreciated until it is put into use... I purchased a second device within a couple days for use at work doubling as a background music source, and a speaker phone for my mobile phone.

Pros: Great sound, Very versatile, Shoulder Strap nicely thought out, looks good, Battery life very good.

Cons: Would be nice to charge it from the USB port, Instructions are miserable, Radiators need some protection.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Spent time researching both online and in person a few of the Bluetooth speakers in this price range. After listening to Bose Soundlink III, UE MegaBoom and the JBL Xtreme, I went with the Xtreme. It had the right amount of bass without being overbearing. The Bose Soundlink III just didn't have enough bass and the UE Megaboom seemed to pride itself on how loud and how much bass it could produce overpowering the overall music soundstage. In addition, the styling of the JBL Xtreme is very nice. (I went with the Red) Although I'm not fond of the zippered enclosure in the back where the power cable and other external cables are connected. For me it's a little annoying when plugging things in. A minor thing and perhaps just my personal annoyance. As always Crutchfield was quick and efficient. Online ordering was easy and I got the product 2 days after ordering it. Plugged it in and charged it overnight, then I used it right away for a backyard BBQ party for about 30+ friends and family. Using the included strap I hung the speaker outside, linked my phone running Pandora and turned it up. The music went all night. I mean, I turned on the speaker at 4p and didn't turn it off till 2a. It ran the entire time with no problems and sounded fantastic!

Pros: Good bass output; very good overall sound Like the included strap for portability Nice style and colors (Black, Blue, Red)

Cons: Don't like the zipper closure for external cables

I love my JBL Extreme.......the sound that comes out of this unit is incredible, and it looks cool - I have the red one. Whether it's low or high volume it sounds awesome. Especially for me on the high end......no distortion , etc. I just throw the strap over my shoulder and away I go. I play it everyday and have only charged it once since I got it....which has been approx. 1 week. I was up in the air between this unit and the Marshall Kilburn.....I made the right decision.

Great Bluetooth speaker. Perfect for entaining outside. The speaker is very loud (exceptionally loud for Bluetooth). My only caveat is don't expect audiophile quality, as this is a portable Bluetooth speaker. Purchasing from Crutchfield was great, as always!

Pros: Loudness, battery, look

Cons: None, best Bluetooth speaker I have experienced!

Things that make you go Hmmmm!

bdriver from Jackson, TN on 6/29/2016

I don't know how JBL gets such a big sound out of this little tube but this by far the best sounding portable I have ever heard. I compared Megaboom and Bose in person before deciding to go with the JBL, simply blew the others out of the water - no comparison. The base is unbelievable and the highs are just as good. I took this bad boy to the beach on vacation and had no trouble hearing it a 1/4 volume and at 1/2 volume had people around me rocking out. Trust me guys you can't go wrong with this one and Crutchfield always has best service and price with great staff and return policy. One word of caution, if you buy this be prepared to answer alot of questions about it, everyone that heard this ask me what it was and where I got it!

Pros: excellent base, clear loud sound, more than enough power for any use. Red is awesome. Can't go wrong all around.

Cons: Not a thing

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought it 2/28/16. Played great then the speaker on the left side blew. It is loud but not as loud as a Bose Sound Dock Portable nor does it sound as good. I did play it as loud as it would go most of the time but expected the product to last longer. The battery does last a while at full volume (8hrs). Bluetooth has trouble connecting to multiple devices. I will be sending this product back for replacement. Hopefully yh speaker does not blow again.

Ronnie from Asheboro, NC on 6/16/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This portable speaker is really built heavy duty. It has real good bass and the voices are clear. I have had it for two weeks and have only charged it once. I listen to it while I washed my truck and that was about two hours. Even outside it has good bass. It is easy to carry around with the supplied strap.

Pros: Sounds Great, easy to charge, simple controls.

Cons: The only problem I have is it will not pair up with my Sony Walkman ( NWZ-A17 ).

Craig C from Prescott, AZ on 5/2/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is my first Bluetooth speaker. I wanted a Bluetooth speaker that not only had great sound quality and can play at high volumes clearly but can be outdoor portable and have good battery life . The JBL Xtreme was the best option. Yes the price is high on the better Bluetooth speakers but the JBL Xtreme is worth the price in the sound quality it has. The only negatives with the JBL Xtreme is that when you first start playing music from the speaker at idle there's a two second delay so you miss the first couple seconds of the song but if you skip to the next song there isn't the delay. Also the speaker has a faint hiss (white noise) when the speaker is at idle (power on, Bluetooth connected and not playing music) but is only noticeable if you have your ear right next to it. I think JBL should have included a protective case that the speaker could be played in or at least have the option of purchasing one separately since the transducers on the ends of the speaker are exposed and could be damaged if bumped or mishandled. Yes the speaker comes with a carrying strap but it doesn't help protect it at all. I feel the JBL Xtreme is the best option in Bluetooth speakers to date.

Pros: Great sound quality, High volume, Splash proof, Battery life, Portable

Cons: High price, First play of music delay, Faint hiss at idle, No manufacturer included or option for a protective case

Compared to Bose Soundlink and spent a lot of time checking out reviews and this is the best large bluetooth speaker around right now. It can be a little bass heavy but is loud enough for outdoors. 4.5/5 stars

Cons: a little bass heavy

JBL Xtreme

Papaque from Pago Pago, AS on 1/7/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great sounding speaker expected of a JBL sound quality. Mids, highs and bass which is more prominent of this speaker, are well balanced. I love playing stringed instruments with this speaker. I am using this with Windows 10 tablets and a laptop thru bluetooth and a few times the connection would just freeze and I have to power off/on the speaker to reconnect. My Jelly bean Android phone cannot connect to the speaker. Multiple connect can be annoying. There should be an option to disable this.

Pros: I love the sound, Sturdy and waterproof.

Cons: Bluetooth connection sometimes freezes on Windows 10 tablets. Can't connect with Android Jelly bean. No option to disable multiple connect which can be annoying when music is being interrupted due to a system sound that comes off from a connected device.

I was not disappointed, this speaker rocks.the bass is solid and robust, the highs are great and the mids are crisp and natural .I would recommend to anyone interested to buy, you won't be disappointed. I made comparisons to other top of the line portable bluetooth speakers and found jblxl the best for the money.

Pros: As stated above.

Way beyond my expectations! I checked out a bunch of others and I am so happy I picked this speaker. Plus Crutchfield honored a sale price after I bought it...so I ended up getting an incredible speaker $50 off!

Pros: Sound is exceptional, well balanced highs to lows and I can use it anywhere...including by the pool.

Cons: Tad bit big...but worth it for the sound it gives!

Review JBL x

Chris from New York on 11/3/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The speaker sounds great for the size of it. I have had portable radios/speakers twice the size but sounded the same. I wanted something with a little more bass and something I can push a little harder for more sound and this fits. I took it away with me, and in my larger hotel room it filled it with sound, and I only had it turned up half way. I have noticed that in a much larger room it still sounds good but can get a little drowned out. I initially thought about buying two but I think that would be too much for what I am looking for.

Pros: Sounds great, really solid piece, sleek speaker, looks nice, Battery Life - I have only charged it up once and still has plenty of power after many uses. It says last 15 hours but I feel it will last much more than that.

Cons: Weight - with the bigger speaker you have the weight with it. I also would have liked a bag to put it in to protect it when traveling or taking it out of the house. One concern I will have over time is the woofers on each side. There is nothing covering them i.e mesh or material. My fear is something picturing the speaker when bringing it somewhere.(thats why I was looking for a protective bag to protect it)

Alan from Tennessee on 11/1/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a pretty impressive speaker. It's easy to connect via Bluetooth with my Android phone. It has a LOT of bass when used indoors, sometimes it's overwhelming and needs to be EQ'd. The strange thing is the bass is a little lacking when used outdoors. I also own a UE Megaboom. The Xtreme has more bass but I don't think it's any louder. It's also on the Xtreme edge of portability....it's large and heavy! The charger is also rather large and cumbersome for traveling

Pros: 1. Sounds amazing when stereo paired with another Xtreme 2. Seems very well made

Cons: 1. On the edge of portability due to size and weight 2. Overwhelming bass when used indoors 3. Not really louder than other Bluetooth speakers, just more bass

Features

Splashproof Design w/ Shoulder Strap: The JBL Xtreme Bluetooth speaker features a rugged rubberized housing and a durable fabric material grille which will hold up indoors and outdoors. The Xtreme is "splashproof", which means no more worrying about rain or spills; you can even clean it with running tap water (just don't submerge it). The included shoulder strap lets you carrying it with you; to the pool, the patio, the porch, on a picnic, and more.

Room Filling Sound: The JBL Xtreme employs digital signal processing to generate room-filling audio from a compact speaker. Using four active drivers (two 1.375" tweeters/two 2.5" woofers), a built-in 20W x 2ch amplifier, and dual 3" side-firing passive radiators, the JBLXtreme delivers room-filling, full-range JBL sound with big bass response. The JBL Xtreme Bluetooth speaker can play from either a vertical or horizontal position, so you can place it in a variety of locations for great sound.

Bluetooth 4.1: The JBL Xtreme features Bluetooth version 4.1 with support for Bluetooth profiles A2DP v1.3, AVRCP v1.5, HFP v1.6, and HSP v1.2. The JBL Xtreme supports wireless audio streaming and hands-free communication, as well as multi-device pairing.

  • Wireless Audio Streaming (A2DP/AVRCP): The JBL Xtreme streams stored music and music apps wirelessly from Bluetooth-enabled devices such as your Apple iPod/iPhone/iPad, Android smartphone/tablet, Windows Phone/PC, Mac laptop/computer and more. You are able to control basic playback functions like Play/Pause & Previous/Next Track from the Xtreme speaker. Song/artist information will still need to be viewed from your Bluetooth audio device.
  • Hands-Free Communication (HFP/HSP): The JBL Xtreme features a built-in noise & echo canceling microphone so you can use it as a hands-free speaker phone for your Apple iPhone, Android smartphone, Blackberry, and more. Use the Xtreme to answer phone calls, talk on Skype, or with Facetime. A long press of the call-answer button will activate the voice command feature of your smartphone (if applicable). You will continue to use your Bluetooth smartphone to view video calls, manually enter phone number, and control advanced phone functions.
  • Multi-Device Pairing: A single button press pairs your Bluetooth-enabled device with the Xtreme. Up to three devices can be paired with the speaker at once, so you and your friends can take turns streaming music. Once paired, the JBL Xtreme will automatically re-connect with paired devices when in wireless range (up to 33').
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the JBL Xtreme.

JBL Connect App: Use the JBL Connect App (for Apple iOS 7+ or Android OS 4.3+) to wirelessly link two JBL Connect enabled speakers, like the JBL Xtreme, together for amplified sound. You are able to link two speakers together so each speaker acts as a left or right channel for stereo sound. You can also link two speakers together so each speaker plays back both left and right channels for playback of the same music from two different speakers.

Dual USB Charging Ports: The JBL Xtreme is capable of recharging the batteries of your Bluetooth-enabled devices from the speaker's two built-in USB (type-A) ports; each rated at 5V/1A. If you are only charging one device, then the single USB port charge is doubled to 2A for even faster chargint. Now you don't need to carry an extra charger to keep your devices powered up.

Note: This USB port does not support audio playback.

Aux Input: In addition to built-in Bluetooth, the JBL Xtreme is fitted with a 3.5mm auxiliary input for connection of almost any portable audio player with a headphone output.

Battery + AC Power: The JBL Xtreme Bluetooth speaker has a built-in Li-ion rechargeable battery (10,000mAh) that provides more than 15 hours of playback time on a single charge. The battery is easily recharged from the speaker's AC power adapter; a full battery charge takes approximately 3.5 hours. The AC power adapter can also be used to power the speaker.

LED Indicators: Clearly visible LEDs let you know when the built-in battery needs to be recharged, as well as when the JBL Xtreme is in Bluetooth listening or pairing mode.

After spending nearly year refurbishing my VW Caravelle Bus with a new motor, high quality body and paint and a more recently completed custom interior, I wanted a portable sound system that sounds big without having to cut my panels for speakers. You can tell just by the build quality of the JBL Xtreme that this bluetooth speaker is the right choice. No other bluetooth speaker uses bass radiators other than Infinity, and both of these brands are by the same company. Yes you will find other bluetooth speakers that are louder with more bass, but those speakers aren't as portable as this speaker. 1 out of 10, 9.5 all the way. [ William Chad  Dec 22, 2016 ]

I would assume so as it works from a droid [ Michael  Dec 02, 2016 ]
Yes [ DEYUNG  Dec 02, 2016 ]
Not sure but if your looking for a wireless speaker this is it the sound is AMAZING we've had so many compliments on it [ JANICE  Apr 26, 2016 ]
Yes. But with some caution.lap tops, smart phones etc. Can be charged all day but you are depending on overcharge circuits for protection.all batterys need a periodic discharge for longer life.I would not do it constantly for safety reasons. [ RICHARD  Apr 26, 2016 ]
I have always just charged it and unplugged. The battery last for a long time even leaving it on my shelf for over a month it didn't loose any power it seems. I am believe it will cut itself off from charging when its fully charged, but it will probably hurt it a bit over a long period of time leaving it plugged in all the time. [ Christopher  Apr 26, 2016 ]
I would try contacting JBL directly so you don't end up with an after market adapter. Sure they would have what you need. Good luck! [ SHAWN  Mar 15, 2016 ]
That is correct.Battery voltage drops slightly when ac charge is removed.A good example of this is the speaker won't play as loud with a half charged battery.Plenty loud but not as loud as full charge. [ RICHARD  Jan 26, 2016 ]
Yes - and 2 in stereo mode sounds really impressive, like a good set of bookshelf speakers. I tried it and its amazing how much better a second will sound. The saying "the whole is greater than the sum of its parts" could not be more true! [ alan  Nov 30, 2015 ]
Yes, based on what I read in the manual. [ Andrew  Nov 29, 2015 ]
Absolutely! Yes. [ Jason  Nov 29, 2015 ]
Yes. They will play in either mode you select in the app. [ David  Nov 29, 2015 ]
You control the volume with the phone. I have an iPhone and the volume can be controlled by both the phone and the speaker. Unfortunately I had to figure out the functionality with trial by fire. It really is a easy. [ Jeff  Jan 09, 2017 ]
Go to your App Store and download the JBL Connect app. The app should make things a little easier. [ LOYD  Jan 09, 2017 ]
Well, I understand your frustration. The JBL speakers produce great sounding stereo. The speaker shape and the vibration on the speaker cone produce an unusual sound. I suggest trying to pair the speaker(s) with an iPad if you have one. You can try a laptop as well. I have iPads I use a lot around the house. You can go to the JBL website and search for your speaker manuals. Once I paired my speakers with my iPad I just adjusted the volume from the JBL speaker or iPad volume control. The only problem I sometimes came across was the speaker was not connected with my iPad. So, I would go to settings and checked the Bluetooth and reestablished the connection. Oh yes. I have two JBL speakers and they work great together. Finally, don't forget to update your app for the latest version. [ TonyJ  Jan 09, 2017 ]
jbl Xtreme has their own website. Scroll down to manuals and downloads and it has a quick start guide that explains the buttons. With that said, I had issues with mine and they sent me a new one. I contacted the manufacturer directly. Jbl is owned by Harmon. Support customer.support@harman. [ Kevin  Jan 08, 2017 ]
