Our take on the Jensen MP1524

Many newer cars have a 4" tall, double-DIN factory radio. So when you're considering a new car stereo, why not choose one that will fit the opening like a glove? Jensen's MP1524 CD receiver will fill that spot perfectly, serving up a bunch of useful features without requiring a big investment in cash.

Add Bluetooth® and more to your dash

Many newer cars have a 4" tall, double-DIN factory radio. So when you're considering a new car stereo, why not choose one that will fit the opening like a glove? Jensen's MP1524 CD receiver will fill that spot perfectly, serving up a bunch of useful features without requiring a big investment in cash.

As more localities prohibit cell phone use on the road, Bluetooth is becoming increasingly popular for smart drivers. The MP1524's built-in Bluetooth lets you enjoy hands-free phone conversations, and Jensen includes an external microphone to ensure that you're heard clearly over the road noise. You'll also love the added convenience of streaming audio wirelessly from your compatible device.

Play your iPod® and other digital media

Once you connect your iPod or iPhone® to the MP1524's front-panel USB input, you can take charge of finding the perfect song, artist, album, or playlist with the receiver's controls. But that's only the beginning of your music options. You can play CDs, including discs loaded with MP3 or WMA files, or plug in USB storage devices to the front-panel port. The SD card slot and auxiliary input on the front panel give you even more options.

Customize the look

You can also adjust the display illumination to match your vehicle's interior lighting with a choice of 30 preset colors and an adjustable setting with over 250 color choices. The 2-line display gives you plenty of system information at a glance, and Jensen includes a wireless remote control for your back seat drivers.

    Looks good but has quirks

M from North Carolina on 11/7/2014

This was my xmas present last year (I picked it out) to replace the factory stereo in my 07 Malibu, which was only radio and CD player. I installed it just fine following the instructions. It sounds great and looks great, but it has a few quirks. First, the clock won't stay displayed. To see the time, you have to press the display button, which is also the Mute function if held a fraction of a second longer. The clock supposedly sets itself, but after a week into day light saving time, it's still an hour off. How the heck do you manually change the time? I believe it's possible, but definitely not intuitive. Once it's set, it seems to stay set. The Bluetooth phone function works, and sounds good to the other party. I have the microphone clipped to a center vent on the dashboard. No echo issues, nor does the other party hear themself. My beef is when Bluetooth is on, it will switch audio sources to BT audio no matter what after the car starts. If you're listening to the radio, it will switch if your phone's Bluetooth is on. Because of this, I keep the Bluetooth off on my phone. If I need to make a call, I have to reconnect manually, which defeats the purpose while driving. So I seldom use it. The switch matrix is flaky. Pressing preset 3 often calls preset 4 (the buttons aren't next to each other) or will somehow switch to FM2. Not a huge deal, but occasionally annoying.

Pros: Looks factory, sounds good, phone sounds good

Cons: Clock display, BT audio override

    Ease to program

I am very pleased with the quality and performance of the Jensen MP1524. I could not believe the overall price and ease of installation with the installation package theat Crutchfield sent to me at no extra charge.

Pros: The installation package with instructions and hardware saved me both time and money. In Comparison with other retailers, this was a very pleasant and unique difference.

Cons: I would have loved to have seen a product video of the radio installed and its operating features before I placed my order.

    Has some issues.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I wanted to get a Bluetooth head unit that looked near stock and I found this Jensen. Upon opening the box, I was skeptical of the build quality. The cover doors for the USB and the Aux are not thought out and cheap (rattle on any surface of road). After install, the first thing I noticed was the display brightness didn't seem consistent. It's a dot matrix type of display and they had quite a variation in brightness of dots. The sound quality is pretty good at lower volumes but distorts quite a bit at higher volumes. The deciding factor for me was the clock for two reasons. First, it's not visible on the front panel without a display button push and it only stays on for a few seconds. Second, within two days of installing the head unit the click had lost 20 minutes of time. Another issue is the Bluetooth connectivity. It's ridiculous to think that every time your phone connects, the head unit source goes to BT audio. If you're listening to the tuner when you stop at a convenience store, why would Jensen insist that you listen to BT audio when you return to your vehicle? Very frustrating feature of this head unit. In the end I decided to remove this Jensen and return it to Crutchfield (whose customer service is second to none). I have installed a Kenwood DPX500BT and couldn't be happier. Thanks to Crutchfield, my change of heart was easily and painlessly resolved.

Pros: Looks near stock Affordable Bluetooth head unit

Cons: Cheap feel to front panel buttons and knobs Clock not visible and loses time Bluetooth connectivity is aggravating

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was very impressed with the convenience of the installation. Some of the instructions were a little vague but overall, it was good. It would appear installation instructions were great for a single DIN, but that was not the case for a double DIN Ford. I am a first time costomer to Crutchfield and will certainly return. I would also recommend the Jenson to others that are looking for a good replacement for their OEM.

Pros: Nice looking and easy to install.

Cons: Nothing other than the clock, but I was already aware of this issue

    Pretty disappointing

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I love that you can change the color of the buttons and it has great sound quality. That being said, everything else kind of sucks. -Clock isn't displayed when using the radio. (Aux is fine, haven't tried CD). -When in AUX and the clock IS displayed, on three separate days, the clock has changed itself by more than an hour and not by just an even hour- minutes too. One time I practically saw it happen. I looked down and it was like 5:40. Look back about 15 minutes later, it's 6:30ish. Look back 5 minutes later and it's 7:45. By the time I got home, it was the proper time again. -Within the first month of ownership, the bit of clear plastic that sits over the LCD display fell off and would never stick again. -Radio presets don't hardly ever go to the proper station on the first try. It will go to A preset, just not the one you pressed. I usually have to press the button two or three times to get to the actual station assigned to that preset. I think that's it. All in all, I'm super disappointed in this thing. The price and overall look and sound quality do NOT outweigh the annoyance factor of a randomly changing clock and intermittent radio presets.

Pros: Volume defaults to a tolerable preset each time the unit is powered on. Buttons color can be changed. SD/AUX/CD/USB inputs. Great sound quality. Looks nice.

Cons: Intermittently working buttons (they don't do nothing, they do random functions.). No clock display in radio mode. Plastic LCD cover fell off within a month. Clock randomly changes time.

Love the clean look and the many background light options. Great unit for quick replacement. Easy install and set-up. nothing really wrong with the unit, just quirky things like when BT audio or phone is used you can't pull up the clock also, the clock never stays correct! The buttons are kind of hard to get used to as well.

Pros: Clean look, not Cheesy. BT audio is easy to set up and use.

Cons: Sound is a bit quiet but good quality sound.

Easy and simple installation in a Tundra truck.

Pros: Great basic radio & CD player with USB, Aux, SD card input and Bluetooth

Cons: Small function buttons that that may be a problem later on. You can't change the brightness of the display. Stays in connect mode when it discovers a Bluetooth device and requires manual intervention return to CD, IPod or radio mode

Decent unit, but disappointed with some features.

    2001 Toyota Tundra
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought the MP1524 based on price, features and the Jensen brand name. Installation was a breeze and it fit perfectly in my Toyota Tundra. After using it for a few days, I noticed some things that were disappointing. On start-up, part of the display would be dim, but then would come to full brightness within 5 to 10 seconds. This happens whenever you change radio stations or change from radio to CD or IPod or clock. Even though the backlight has thousands of color combinations, you can't change the color or brightness of the display. The most annoying thing about the MP1524 has to do with the bluetooth. It has an automatic reconnect function so when you restart your car, the unit automatically pairs with your smartphone. While this function is handy, after you get reconnected, the radio, CD or IPod stops playing. You then have to manually select the radio, CD, etc. It's like having to turn on the radio and then selecting the CD function every time you start your car. When I called Crutchfield, they agreed that the LED and the bluetooth reconnect function, appeared to be problems. They immediately sent out a new unit. Unfortunately on the new unit, the LED problem was worse and bluetooth reconnect was the same. When I called Jensen/Audiovox and explained the problems, the technician basically said "that's the way this unit works". I am disappointed that Jensen would make a product with these obvious flaws.

Pros: Easy installation, ability to play music through USB or bluetooth.

Cons: Uneven display. Stays in audio mode when it discovers a Bluetooth device and does not return to CD, IPod or radio mode. Jensen's customer service technician was not very helpful.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this in a 2006 Infiniti G35 Sedan for my wife. The Bose CD player finally died. Having never done this before it took me about 4 hours. I ran into a snag about 1PM on a Sunday afternoon and found Eli at Crutchfield Tech Support instantly picking up the phone and solving my problem. Getting this kind of support on a Sunday afternoon is rare these days. Many thanks. My wife thinks I'm a genius!

Pros: Great support and returns policy

Cons: If you disconnect the battery on a G35 too many times like I did you will throw an error "Service Engine Soon" light on dash. Clear the code and drive it for a while and it will reset the ECU and light will go out.

    2003 Ford Expedition
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this to replace the 2-DIN OEM radio in a Ford Expedition. It is cheap, so a good value, but has some quirks which would be very easy to fix, but make it an abject disappointment. Before buying, I downloaded and read the manual end to end, just to make sure that it would have all the functionality I wanted. The manual says "The unit will display radio station frequencies, current time, and PTY category selection (if any)." and also "Use the volume knob (21) to set clock to display when the unit is turned on or off." Be advised that YOU CAN NOT GET THIS THING TO SHOW THE CLOCK CONTINUOUSLY!. What good is a car radio that you have to reach over while driving and hit a tiny button just to see what time it is? If your dash has a separate clock, this won't be a problem. If you don't care about the time, this won't be a problem. For me it is a show stopper. It would have been such a simple thing to fix this. Maybe a software update, one line of code would fix it! I looked but there is no contact info for Jensen on the net. I chose this radio because I liked the display. The dot matrix font looked better than all the other modified 7-segment displays, and I wanted a radio with real hardware buttons and knobs - not a touch screen panel. The Bluetooth works fine with a Samsung Galaxy Nexus. Another easy software fix and ridiculous human interface choice is that on power-up it always goes to Bluetooth audio profile and you have to manually go back to FM mode. Why?

Pros: Better dot matrix display font than other 2-DIN radios available on Crutchfield. Alphabet characters look like characters - not modified digits on a 7 segment display. Inexpensive Easy to install. Good install manual and kit by Crutchfield, thank you. Bluetooth phone interface audio well done, no echoes or feedback, mic is good. Good, solid hardware construction for the price. Nice volume knob, buttons OK (could have been slightly bigger)

Cons: Can not get it to display the clock all the time (except in AUX IN mode)!!! Can not replace the stupid RDS info with clock. Receiver sensitivity is low - lost about 5 miles range on FM to WETA, WBJC, WAMU. Display becomes uneven and dim for about 5 seconds after changing mode, then recovers to full brightness. Does not stay in current audio mode when it discovers a Bluetooth device. No phone contact info for Jensen for feedback to them on these issues. No interface to steering whe

"Coolness" isn't a consideration - function is paramount, however. Could have been a bit more powerful as it doesn't sound as good as the deck it replaced - when the other one DID work. Has functions I'll probably not bother to use or set up - that is, if I get around to reading the directions - it was that simple to install.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed this unit in a 1998 Ford F-350 Super Duty cab/motorhome. When the original unit was removed the height of the box of the new unit was slightly hight than the opening in the dash. Installation requires you to have to cut off about 3/16 inch of plastic lip along the bottom and top of the opening to make it large enough to fit the new unit. Its not difficult with a hacksaw blade or Dremel tool. The lip sits back deep in the dash opening and once you install the new unit with the proper dash mounting adapter (from Crutchfield) it all slides in very nicely and securely and the lip you had to trim off is not visible from the front of the unit. I hooked it up to the electrical coupling in the dash and it plays through all the speakers throughout the RV's entertainment speakers and sounds great. The Blue Tooth works great and there is an external speaker for the BlueTooth that plugs into the back of the unit and has a wire that allows you to run it out through the dash opening (or any other route you want to run it) to use to pick up speech when using the BlueTooth feature. The USB plug on the front works great with an iPod or iPhone but you need to have your own cable. Overall installation when very smooth and easily without any surprises and you get an awful lot of bang for the buck with this unit compared to the other more expensive units with the same features. I'd buy it again.

Pros: A lot of product and features for the low price. Easy installation.

Cons: If installing it in a Ford, it is likely to require you to have to trim the dash opening to make it a little larger. This will not be visible once you install the unit but the dash will then no longer be the right fit for the original unit if you ever have to put the original unit back in.

I put this unit in a 2000 Ford Explorer and after modifying the dash this thing snapped right in. I didn't want to spend a bunch of $$ for a truck that has 245k miles but this Jensen product fits the bill in every aspect.

Awesome unit, sounds great in my Nissan truck! A definite upgrade from the factory CD/Radio combo. The boost in power drives the OEM speakers like never before. I'll update the speakers in a month or two even though it sounds great now. A breeze to install too, about an hour for me and I'm very average at being handy. Also, I was able to blend the controls color to match the rest of the dash lights perfectly, it looks "factory" but has a distinct "aftermarket" thump to it! This is some of the best value for my money I've ever gotten, I'm extremely happy with this unit!

Pros: Great sound, price and it looks great, easy to install also!

Cons: When the ignition is turned back on after a stop, it reconnects Bluetooth and has to have the mode switched to another media type to hear music. It's just the press of a button to switch but this is never mentioned in the Jensen manual.
