Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I thought this unit would be the best of all worlds, in that it has a lot of functionality. It has cool features and great-sounding HD Radio, but the real reason I bought this is for its iPod capabilities, which are pretty awful. I'm on my second unit now. The 1st one was replaced because of a motherboard problem. The 2nd unit is worse than the first. This motherboard has a set of new problems (resets to 87.5 every time you turn the car on, and the iPod system is crash and burn). More on the iPod issues. I liked the idea of playing my ipod through the screen, but it doesn't display or scroll the full titles, so you can't see the full tracks and if you want to switch to podcasts, you have to switch to manual control, pick up your ipod, wait for the buffer, change the menu, select your podcast and then hit the touchscreen again and wait for it to buffer and syn again to go back to Jensen control. Additionally, if you're in a playlist, my unit plays 30 seconds of one song, skips to another, plays 30 secs of that, etc. If you try to scroll to the bottom of your songs on the touchscreen, the unit crashes and restarts. This all takes precious time and attention away from the road. I've already arranged for it to be replaced and exchanged with a JVC head because I've simply had enough of the Jensen. I'm going to lose the video screen, but at least the unit should work properly and allow me to keep my eyes on the road.

    Great DVD player for price

Theresa from Levittown, PA on 12/22/2008

Install was easy, can do that with out directions... just hook up the matching color wires and leave out the Blue/white wire on both radios unless you have an amp and subs then by all means go for it! The reason why i gave it a 4 out of 5 is because my last Jensen, was a little better when it came to changing the settings and the bass, I have Pioneer Premies with tweeters in the front and pioneer 4 ways in the back and i dont know something doesn't sound right, like they are week... and they are far from week.. maybe its to much for the radio to hold... but its something. The video and everything is is great for the money, its very very easy to use and i like how it looks in my truck!!! would buy it if you looking for something with a little more then a basic CD player!!

As usual, the service/support by Crutchfield was exceptional! The unit is all that it claims to be, the display is clear and bright, the touch screen just sensitive enough and the options are plenty. The only complaint I have is that my unit has a hard time loading mega dvd mp3 discs, it rejects them a couple of times before it takes. I have yet to try a different brand of blank dvd, I'm hoping that's all it is, but overall I'm very satisfied with the unit!

This is one of the best things I have got from here. I rate it 5 stars. The only thing is that it does have a J-link cable included. The web and the box said it don't. So for those with an I-pod there is no need to buy one.

[Editor's Note: We checked our inventory and also double checked with Jensen. The cable is, in fact, included. Thank you for bringing this to our attention]

paid to have it installed by a proffesional and have had nothing but problems, the HD/regular radio has never worked, didn't bother with it since I was going on the road and what I needed was the XM radio, and that stopped working half way though my trip, the only thing that never stopped working was the CD/DVD player. For the price after buying the xm adapters and everything, not worth it...

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall, I am happy with this radio. I wanted something in order to play LOTS of WMA's so I needed something with a screen so that I could scroll through hundreds of songs easily. This radio is packed with inputs and features and very easy to use once you get the hang of it. Pros: # of features Bang for the buck Full enertainment system for the car Cons: Graphics display -- looks cheesy and not enough information displayed (only like 10 characters of a song title displays and it has no scrolling option for the LCD) Slow loading DVD-R's w/ wma's (which it does everytime the radio's turned on or the source is changed). CD-R's are almost immediatly loaded. Very few audiophile tuning/adjustments. No bluetooth. Accessories (GPS) too expensive. Overall, I am very happy with this radio. It's not tip of the line, but there is a lot of value to this product. I have a 98 Expedition and I replaced all of its speakers with Polks when I installed this radio and everything sounded great (and LOUD) w/o needing to add an additional amplifer. Crutchfield was awesome and I will definitely order from them again.

Overall I am very satisfied with the unit. I do have a few issues however. The unit was pretty easy to install thanks to the Critchfield guide and install kit...a very nice freebie!!!! however, there were WAY too many wires and jacks to try to stuff back in my dash, I scratched my hands up pretty good trying to get everything to fit. Also the EQ is pretty weak, I was expecting a few more settings for this level of unit, also whenever I turn on the unit the volume blasts WAY too loud regardless of the setting when I turned the set off, this is VERY frustrating and the lack of controls when the screen is shut is a bit frustrating as well. Overall though I am very happy with my purchase, when the screen is open most everything is pretty easy to access.

    Great Unit - Camera questions

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this unit a couple months back for my RV. The HD radio is great, although it does fade in and out. I ran the outputs back to the rear TV so the kids can watch movies while we're driving. The only issue I've had is that upon hooking up a wireless rearview camera to the unit, I have to manually go to the camera setting. It does not automatically switch to camera mode when I shift into reverse, but the camera works great if I go to camera mode manually. This may be operator error of course, and I'm hoping there was something I forgot to hook up.

Got this unit about a month ago and everything on it still seems to work smoothly. It has plenty of inputs/outputs to do almost everything you could possible want. Picture and sound quality is amazing, especially when watching a loud action movie. Only downside is the lack of buttons when the unit is closed. Install was a breeze on my 07 Mazda3 thanks to the free installation gear and the instructions from Crutchfield.

    My Opinion

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The unit is just okay in my opinion. I figured I'd splurge and buy a unit with pretty much the works for not so much money for what you're getting. That's if you really need a video player. I kind of figured I wouldn't need one, but the video DVD player works great! The HD radio works okay....the signal keeps fading in and out. The signal is a little better on a couple stations in the area that have a strong signal to begin with, but it still can fade in and out. Sometimes when I try to use the touch screen scroll it doesn't work all the time lately. I'm hoping this isn't a sign of more touch screen problems to come. I'm waiting for the rest of my satellite parts to try that out. Some of the sites will say XM and SIRIUS accepted, but it will only take XM hookups. As for what someone else posted about only taking XM and Howard Stern is on Sirius....the 2 companies will become one shortly so it won't matter anyway. The unit itself is built to long and has to many wires in the back to stuff into the dash. Also I don't like the way it sticks out of the dash. Myself I doubt I would buy any video playing radio again or next time. I'd probably get a JVC with built in HD and satellite hookups. Could've gotten that for about $160 verses this for about $500

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit is nice but there are a few features "or the lack of" that would have made me pick another system. The first issue is when the unit is closed, there is no way to keep the time displayed like on a stock radio. Another thing is that you can't change the color to match your dash, it only shows in blue. The last thing is it is not set up for Sirius, only XM and as you know, Howard Stern Rules !!!

this product is great, the ipod interface is the best i've seen. the hd radio works awsome. i also purchased the nav101 and it works great the only down side of the VM9312 HD is that you cant PIP to the nav screen while listening to music. but you can listen to the music while the nav is running you just cant see the map. audio cuts out when NAV needs to direct you, but other than that it's wll worth the money. i would recomend it to anyone who needs all these features for fun.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought the unit for the HD and am pleased with it overall. Looks unobtrusive when closed which is great and the fact that it can be operated closed is also good. Sound is impressive but at higher levels you can hear distortion and a hiss.. Recommend an external amp to clean up the sound. Setup was easy and menus are good looking and complete. Something I didn't like was the autosearch button for channels in the top left corner.. I wish this was a screen choice instead. When the screen is closed this button gets pressed accidently by friends and it changes your saved channel list.. Could have been devoted to selecting saved channels as this cannot be done with the screen closed unless you use the remote. Another fault I see is when time is displayed and channel is changed you don't know what channel it is unless you change the display choice.. Just wish it could have at least shown channel and then gone back to time display like a factory radio.. Something not mentioned is that it will accept the NAV101 unit a nice touch.. Hope to see a review here on this with the navagation feature installed.. Would like to see if it would allow both nav features and music at the same time.. I picked this unit because it was the only one with the features I wanted that fit my truck..

Great DVD Feature, Weak HD Signal

Larry from Mission Viejo, CA on 6/8/2008

I purchased this unit for my 2007 Hummer H3. The DVD player is great and the powerful 160 watts total is perfect for my 4 speaker system. I wanted to get HD so I could get rid of my Sirius satellite radio and listen to free, digitally enhanced commercial free music on HD. The only negative thing I have found is the HD radio stations suffer alot of drop outs. I live in a major market region for HD stations however the constant interuptions in the signal make me turn on my Sirius and I'm back at square one. If they made a antenna adapter to boost the signal it would make the product more enjoyable.

This CD player is awsome. Crutchfield did a great job with getting it to me fast. The ffeatures on this cd player are great. For the money it is well worth every penny spent. I would highly recommend this product to anybody who wants a great player!!!!

    Gene from Maryland on 4/20/2008

I own a '97 F-150 Extended cab and was looking at replacing the head unit. I came across this in a sale so I decided to pick it up. When receiving this unit I was completely overwhelmed. (First time doing this) but, the directions were simple and the process went quite smooth. The switching of the head units ended up only taking about 2.5 hours (Due to the directions mentioning to "lift tabs and slide sleeve off" which in fact was, unscrew tabs from the sleeves. Other than that this project was easier than anticipated and I am very glad I decided to upgrade. Overall I would definitely recommend this product. I notice clearer sound through my stock speakers, beautiful clean picture, and the extras (such as camera, aux channel 1 and 2, Satellite radio, CD, Radio, and MP3) add all so much this piece of equipment. I am very glad that I picked this one up and would definitely do it again. 5-Stars Crutchfield, 5 Stars

Mounting: The unit can be mounted as either an E, I, or J mount. For proper operation of the CD/DVD player, the chassis must be mounted with 20-degrees of horizontal.

    MediaLink Module

MediaLink Module: In addition to the preamp outputs, A/V auxiliary inputs and satellite radio inputs found on the rear chassis of the unit, the Jensen VM9312HD utilizes a separate MediaLink module for easy connection and disconnection of your portable A/V equipment and portable MP3 player. The MediaLink features a 3.5mm minijack, left and right audio RCA jacks, one composite video jack and a proprietary jLink adapter port. The MediaLink uses an attached 56" Bus-cable that plugs into the rear chassis of the VM9312HD which allows the MediaLink module to be installed under the dash or in other various locations to make hooking-up and unhooking your portable AV equipment a cinch. The MediaLink Module measures: W = 3.743", H = 1.372", D = 4.405" (5.275" with cables attached).

iPod Ready: The supplied jLink cable allows you to connect an iPod to this unit through the supplied MediaLink module's proprietary jLink port (mentioned above). Once an iPod is connected, you can control the iPod from the head unit's touchscreen, joystick or remote control. If you have an iPod that supports video/photo output, you must use the iPod to control video and photo playback. During photo playback, you can only view photos in a slide show. You cannot display individual photos from the thumbnail menu. During music playback, the controls on the iPod are disabled. The unit will automatically switch to iPod mode when an iPod is plugged into the MediaLink using the optional jLink adapter cable. The iPod is charged when it's connected to the head unit. The VM9312HD is compatible with the following iPods using the optional jLink cable.

    • Audio And Video Playback: 5th generation iPod video only
    • Audio Playback Only: iPod mini (1st/2nd generation), iPod nano (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th generation), iPod photo (4th generation), iPod classic (80/120/160GB), iPod touch (1st, 2nd generation) and iPhone (incl. 3G)
    • Charging Note: This cable will NOT charge iPhone 3G, iPod nano (4th gen), or iPod touch (2nd gen).

    Remote Control

Remote Control: The VM9312HD also comes supplied with a 44-Key, full-function, infrared wireless remote control. The remote measures 1.972" wide x 5.473" long x 0.465" deep.

    Camera/Navigation Compatible

Rear View Camera Compatible: The VM9312HD features a composite video input and a green/white wire lead attached to the harness for connection of a rear view camera. If a rear-view video camera is connected, the unit is on, and the TFT monitor is retracted inside the unit, the TFT monitor automatically moves into the viewing position and Camera modes is selected upon shifting into Reverse gear. When shifting into Drive gear, the TFT monitor is retracted back inside the unit. If the monitor is already in a viewing position and in display mode, the monitor automatically switches to Camera mode upon shifting into Reverse. When the reverse driving stops, the monitor returns to its original input display mode. You can choose for the monitor to display a Mirror mode image or a Normal mode image from the rear-view camera.

Navigation Control: This unit can control the optional NAV101 navigation module (110NAV101, sold separately). The NAV101 connects via a proprietary input on the rear chassis of the receiver. The Jensen NAV101 add-on GPS navigation module includes routing and map software and provides turn-by-turn route guidance. The Jensen NAV101 comes supplied with a 2GB SD-card preloaded with the Smart2Go navigation engine and Tele Atlas map data. The map data covers the continental US, Canada, Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico. All user information such as settings, bookmarks and recently visited location are stored on the SD memory card and not on the device.
