Our take on the Kenwood KDC-BT648U

Driving can be dangerous when you're distracted. The Bluetooth capability that's built into Kenwood's KDC-BT648U CD receiver keeps your mind where it should be — on the road. When you answer a call, it's just like talking to someone who's sitting next to you, so you can keep your hands on the wheel and leave your phone in your pocket. A dedicated "phone" button on the receiver's face makes it easy to "pick up" when a call comes in.

iPod® control for your drive-time tunes
Connect your player to the receiver's front-panel USB input, and you're ready to navigate the tracks and playlists on your iPod. Dedicated "Search" and "Return" keys cut down on the need to work through menus when you're looking for a specific song, while the "Passenger Mode" lets you control your iPod or iPhone® from the device itself — that's a useful feature if you're listening to streaming content like Internet radio stations over your iPhone.

And more entertainment options
The front-panel auxiliary input offers an instant connection for a portable satellite radio or another sound source. You can play all kinds of CDs, even discs that you've loaded with MP3 and WMA files. And, you can add a Kenwood HD Radio™ tuner or satellite radio to enjoy the best in radio.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Kenwood stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Kenwood, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

Garbage Garbage Garbage. Just over a year later and a USB error appears making iPod connectivity useless. Bluetooth option is terrible. The hand controls are non existent.

    Pros: Easy to install.

Cons: Difficult to use. Plagued with firmware problems. Bluetooth sounds terrible. Menu layout is not intuitive

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

When seeing Bluetooth and iPod/iPhone listed I expected to be able to stream from the iPhone. With this unit you will only be able to utilize Bluetooth/iPhone together for the purpose of making/receiving phone calls. Streaming of music over BT is not supported. I am planning on removing the unit for a return and making another purchase.

Pros: Crutchfield has been great to deal with. Sound quality is good and install was easy.

Cons: Bluetooth is only for phone, not streaming of music. Interface is a not the easiest to use.

    Absolutely satisfied

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great piece of gear. Eons better than my factory radio, that's for sure! The sound is great, the controls are easy to use once you get the hang of it, and the remote control is the bomb! I love it. Some people have complained about the blue tooth, but I've not found it to be really all that bad. It just sounds like you're talking on a speaker phone, which you are. All in all, excellent stereo. It was easy to install and sounds great.

Pros: Sound, controls, looks great, just awesome.

Cons: The one con is that the display is hard to read in the sunlight.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Got this to replace an older Pioneer BT7000 which I had sold with a previous vehicle. As usual, shipping was fast, all accessories included and usual Crutchfield attention to detail. Installed easily, fit perfectly in the dash and navigation was much better than the Pioneer unit. Sound is clear and the whole package is great with the glaring exception of the bluetooth connection, which is a complete bust and totally unusable. With the Pioneer, I had a clear phone connection for years but with this one, despite tweaking all of the mic sensitivity settings, there is simply no way to get the party on the other end to hear anything above a whisper, no matter how loud I speak. I can pull off to the side of the road, roll up all the windows and still have to shout to be heard at all on the other end. Basically, it does not work at all.

Pros: great navigation, good sound quality from tuner, cd, ipod or other usb device

Cons: total and complete phone connection fail.

    Great Receiver

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Was looking for factory replacement with AUX and USB, BT was not needed but it came with it. Had read some reviews about the BT being terrible, not the case with me. Turned BT on cell a Motorola Bionic, turn BT on Kenwood got paired fairly quickly next came some downloading to receiver. Receiver displays name of caller and their number the sound is good, still trying to figure txt but have not read manual. Remember I did all this without reading manual just turned on BT on both devices.

Pros: BT works great, sound is awesome and super easy install.

Cons: None so far, if wiring harness was put together already would just make install that much faster, but them I'm just being picky.

It is very nice, I wish I could change the color of the radio at night just blue is boring.

Pros: It is Load and has great functions to adjust my speakers, trade listening on game mode( very great sound, no I think I need better speakers to go with it)

Cons: It is lighted with blue only( it would be cool to change the color when your mood changes)

Just what I expected from Kenwood. I bought this to not only replace but upgrade the Kenwood KDC-HD545U that had been stolen out of my truck. Decided on this model for the BT ability and the ability to add satellite radio. The BT works very well the only time I have any issues is if there is a lot of noise inside the cab of my truck which only happens when I have the windows down driving down the highway. The radio controls are exactly the same as my old radio so figuring it out was pretty easy for me. Hooking up the satellite radio to it was a breeze. Overall it is exactly what I wanted and performs exactly how I expected from a Kenwood.

    Bluetooth capability a little frustrating

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Chose this unit to replace the stock head unit. Bought it because of its bluetooth compatibility, and the radio text function. Initially disappointed that the clock has to be chosen by pressing a button, rather than being displayed along with the radio text. But the biggest frustration for me is the bluetooth function. I've changed the settings per the instruction, but this unit never does the same thing twice. Sometimes I get in the car, and it interfaces with my phone. Sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes it tries to, and fails, and then my display reads "HF Disconnect" and I have to reset the radio to make it go away. I'm tempted to disable the whole function just because it's making me nuts.

Pros: Inexpensive, decent power, compatible with many of my car's OEM controls

Cons: Buttons very small, hard to locate while driving. Bluetooth funtion is unreliable in my application.

Great for the Price! Nice Sound

italianboss316 from Los Angeles, CA on 1/15/2012

Easy to use! All the Functions you need! Plays everything! Great Bluetooth feature. Works fine if you knowhow to adjust the volume and your phone right...

Pros: BLuetooth function. read you texts and emails as well. Sound and Quality!

Cons: no face plate holder. Thats it!

Installed in my Ford Transit. Sounds great, aux input works, I can charge my phone with the USB port or drive an Ipod from the head unit controls. Intuitive, simple upgrade. Pretty, but not ostentatious. If you want a good head unit with lots of big dog features on a budget, this is it. Only downside is that it doesn't have much flash and the display is rudimentary.

BT okay, Sound good. Clock Display?

Nissan Truck from SC on 10/18/2011

Bought a Refurbished Kenwood mainly to get an Ipod Docking port. The cost of a Kit to upgrade the old Nissan radio with a USB input was $85 more than this unit cost. Bluetooth was a bonus feature not originally looking for, but at the price, WHY Not? Installation was easy with only one call to a service tech because one of the wires didn't match the Nissan harness. Also, had to slightly modify one of the trim pieces with a knife for a better fit. Sound is good with low-end factory truck speakers and reception is 2X better. BT took a little fiddling to get decent mic quality...still a little "echoer" on the other end but not bad, nay still need tweaking. Setting up the BT phonebook is tedious and limited to 30 contacts. Can't figure out how to make the Clock display the time so the only way to know the time is go to the Clock Set screen.

Don't waste your time. No one could hear me at all. Get the Kenwood KDC-X695 instead the Bluetooth is excellent on that one because it has a wired mic. I will have to return this one.

    Forget about phone calls

Lloyd from Jacksonville, FL on 6/24/2011

I bought this from my local big box store, which was my first mistake. It cost almost twice as much installed. Good radio, but the Bluetooth performance, which was important to me, was as bad as other reviewers say. I'm swapping it out for a Pioneer and next time I'll buy from Crutchfield, which gave me a good deal and good service on a unit I bought for my other car.

The sound is great. The bluetooth option is questionable at best but I may need to mess with the settings to get it tuned in better. For some reason there is a crackle occasionally when in ipod mode, but this goes away when it is unplugged and then plugged back in. For the money it seems to be a good product. The crutchfield service has been outstanding. Thanks!

Good Stereo, Not So Good BT

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got this stereo to replace a previous Kenwood I had that went out on me. The installation was a breeze and it fired right up with amazing sound through the new Kenwood speakers I got along with it. All was good and I had my DROID X synced up in no time and the bluetooth was working well. Until I needed to make a call, when my first call came in the person on the other end couldn't hear a thing I was saying. (I asked them later what it sounded like and they said it was like I was driving through a tornado.) I even tried to pull off to the side of the road and talk directly into the face of the unit and my phone with no luck of improved sound. Overall this a great unit if you just want to use it as a stereo but the bluetooth features are lacking and not worth it for this unit. However with the help of Crutchfield I will be exchanging it for a better unit possibly the BT848U or the X695 or X895.

Great Features, but beware the BlueTooth function

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great Stereo all around. Let me break it down: Functions: Awesome tweaking ability for true audiophiles, plenty of functions to keep you busy. Setup is very easy and the manual's step-by-step instructions are nice. The faceplate is readable in direct sunlight, too. Power: the speakers sound great! I bought new Kicker 6x9's for the back and Polk 5's for the front and there is no shortage in power. The radio comes in loud and clear, too. Blue Tooth: The setup is pretty easy if your phone is compatible (mine was). The deck can read your phone book, call list, speed dials, etc. Very cool. THE DOWNSIDE: APPARENTLY THE SOUND ON THE CALLER'S END IS VERY POOR, THEY HAVE TROUBLE HEARING YOU AND IS VERY ECHO-Y (this may have something to do with their voice being played back through the speakers). The manual shows several tweaking options for the BlueTooth function, which I have yet to play with. Until i can investigate further, i don't use the BlueTooth function. Everything else works great! This is a great deck! But if I cannot remedy the BlueTooth function I could have spent a little less money.

    Jolly good show

    2006 Toyota 4Runner
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit replaced a previous Kenwood unit in a 4Runner. This unit is easier to use and easier to programme. It gets good radio reception and I really like the USB input right in the face of the unit. The Blue Tooth portion of the radio is also easier to use and control than the unit it replaced. Bad: I have to press "Ok" on my phone every time it syncs with the radio. The previous phone I had would do this automatically (so I either have a preference not set right, or it's my phone). Only other thing is that the volume knob is smooth. This makes it so you have to put a little grip on it to turn it (dumb complaint I know). Previous unit had rough edge making it easier to turn, but controls on that radio were much more complicated.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First I loved it. Great radio reception, actual buttons to instantly select the station I wanted. Awesome iPod connectivity (never used the CD player). Then I set up the Bluetooth - very poor directions. Why do I need a PIN? Finally got it synced and it tested OK when parked in the garage with engine off. Next day while driving my wife calls. She can't hear me, only road noise and a bad echo. I'm driving a 2000 Range Rover. It has a fairly quiet ride. I try the mic adjustments. NO help. Frustration sets in. I have to turn it off to use my phone. The faceplate-mic is worthless. There is no jack for a wired mic. Returned it after 3 days for KDC-X695 which is the exact radio only with a wired mic. Now I totally love my Kenwood. Crutchfield was great - free shipping both ways for my return.

    So far so good

    twnboarder from ND on 4/4/2011

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

There are a lot of good options with this deck, and for the price I think it's a great value, especially with the built-in bluetooth. I've installed nothing but Kenwood decks in the last of my 3 cars and I've been very happy with them based on the price and performance. This is a very clean deck, easy to use, and has many useful options for tweaking sound based on the type of music you listen to, and the speakers you have. I would definitely buy this again. I didn't give it a 5 star review as it's not perfect in every way, but I would recommend this to a friend. Also I'm working on getting the bluetooth to sound good, I've been told by others that with the stock settings, it was hard to hear me over the road noise, but my car is a bit noisy and I hadn't changed any bluetooth settings yet, and there are plenty of settings to mess with.

Great radio for the price. Blutooth works great as well. Installed myself with no problems. Was disappointed with the Preset memory. You can set your seek mode to search presets only, however, it goes back to channel search everytime you turn the radio off, or change the band. Kinda dumb to have a SETTING for that then...... I would recommend this unit to anyone who doesn't want to sink a lot of money into a new stereo. Easy on the wallet and easy on the ears. Display Features

Detachable Face: The Kenwood KDC-BT648U features a single front loading CD face that detaches from the chassis to deter theft. The head unit includes a cloth pouch for storing the face-plate when detached. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.

Note: An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can also be purchased for this unit.

Fluorescent Display: The Kenwood head unit features a 14-segement, 13-character bluish white backlit fluorescent display with blue button illumination.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: When the unit is in Standby mode, the face/button illumination is "keyed." In addition, while the unit is in Standby mode, you can turn the clock display on or off. When the Clock Display is turned on and the unit is in Standby mode, the Clock Display is also "keyed." Pressing and holding the source button turns the unit off completely.

Display Dimmer: The display has two brightness settings to adjust the brightness of the display according to the surrounding illumination. You can change this setting within the menu from On or Off.

Demo Mode: This unit features a Demo mode which can be turned "on" or "off" within the menu.

    Audio Section

24 Bit D/A Converter: The Kenwood KDC-BT648U utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior CD sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The Kenwood KDC-BT648U is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit. The power output specs for the KDC-BT648U are as follows:

    • Full Bandwidth Power: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20-20kHz, 1% THD)
    • Maximum Output Power: 50 watts x 4 channels

Rotary Volume Control: The CD receiver uses a 3-way rotary volume control that increases and decreases the volume of the stereo from 0 to 35. The rotary knob also controls other audio settings such as Balance, Fader, Bass, Mid, Treble and preset EQ settings. In addition, the rotary knob allows you to scroll through and select your music tracks when the Music Search function is activated.

Volume Offset: The level of each source may be independently adjusted to prevent radical leaps in output volume when switching from one source to another. The available settings range from -8 to 0 (-8 to +8 for Aux source).

Supreme Setting: When MP3, WMA, and AAC files encoded at a low bit rate (less than 96 kbps, 44.1k, 48kHz) are played, the Supreme Setting function restores their high frequencies so the sound quality is closer to files encoded at a high bit rate. The processing is optimized for the compression format and the bit rate used. When the Supreme Setting is Off, the unit plays the original sound stored in the audio file.

Speaker Settings: The Speaker Setting function tailors the System Q Sound Control settings according to the type of speakers in your vehicle. You may select a Speaker Setting of "SP Off" (flat), "SP OEM" (for OEM factory speaker systems), "SP 6x9/6" (for systems with 6" and 6"x9" speakers), or "SP 5/4" (for systems with 4" and 5" speakers).

System Q Sound Control: Eight EQ curves are preset into memory, allowing you to recall the best preset EQ curve for different types of music. Each preset has its own level settings for bass (100Hz), midrange (1kHz), and treble (12.5kHz). You can choose from the following preset EQ curves - Rock, Pops, Easy, Top 40, Jazz, Natural, Game, and User.

Bass/Treble/Mid Control: The System Q's User Mode features independent Bass (100 Hz), Treble (10 kHz), and Midrange (1 kHz) control from - 8 to +8 dB.

Bass Boost: The Kenwood CD receiver also features a Bass Boost control that can be set to the following levels - LV1, LV2 or Off.

Source Tone Memory: This feature allows you to store System Q bass, middle and treble tone settings for each source (CD, Tuner, Aux, and USB).

6ch/2.5V Preamp Outputs: The KDC-BT648U features front, rear and subwoofer 2.5-volt preamp outputs. The front and rear speaker preamp outputs are balance and fade adjustable. The subwoofer preamp output is non-fading. The front, rear, and subwoofer preamp outputs are fixed to the rear chassis of the head unit.

Front & Rear High-Pass Filter: The KDC-BT648U features an independent High-Pass Crossover for the front & rear channels when your front & rear speakers are connected by the unit's speaker-outputs or preamp-outputs. You can adjust the high-pass crossover from "Through", 80, 100, 120, 150, or 180Hz. The "Through" selection is a full-range setting. This feature is very helpful when you have smaller-type speakers in the front and larger-type speakers installed in the rear of the vehicle.

Subwoofer Controls: The Kenwood KDC-BT648U provides the following subwoofer preamp output controls.

    • Low-Pass Filter: The receiver features a built-in Low Pass Filter control for the unit's subwoofer preamp output. You can select from 60, 80, 120Hz, or "Through". The "Through" setting allows your external amplifier's crossover network to do all the filtering for your subwoofer.
    • Subwoofer Phase: You can adjust the phase of the subwoofer output between 180-degrees (Reverse) or 0-degrees (Normal).
    • Subwoofer Level: You can independently control the subwoofer preamp output level from the CD receiver. You select levels between -15 to +15.

Key Beep: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.
