Our take on the Kenwood DDX418

It's cool to command your car A/V system from a touchscreen receiver, and even cooler when you add the convenience and safety of built-in Bluetooth® for hands-free calling. Kenwood's DDX418 DVD receiver allows you to conduct calls with just a touch or two on the screen, no phone fumbling required. When you're listening to music, you'll see song and artist info displayed, bright and clear, and you can also use the touchscreen to change sources, choose music, select DVD menu items, or adjust EQ settings. For just the right look, you can set the receiver's control buttons to match the color of your vehicle's illumination.

iPod® and other options
Use Kenwood's iPod cable to connect your iPod to the receiver for full access to your audio and video content. You can browse your playlists by album art, play video from your iPod, and watch your favorite DVDs on the built-in screen when you're parked, or add an external screen and wireless headphones so your passengers in the back can watch while you drive.

Play your favorite music
You can plug a thumb drive full of music into the receiver's USB input for hours of road music, or spin your favorite CDs, including recordable discs loaded with MP3, WMA, and AAC files. The front-panel A/V input comes in handy for gaming consoles and other audio/video sources.

Install Kenwood's KNA-G610 navigation module, and you'll control navigation functions right on the touchscreen. Voice prompts guide you to your destination, and the Garmin-powered navigation system features 2D and 3D views for impressive detail.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can use this adapter to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Kenwood stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Kenwood, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls.

Note: Bluetooth compatibility of this device may vary, depending on your phone and service provider.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

    Great receiver for the price.

Larry from Little Rock, AR on 7/23/2012

This unit is packed with features that normally come on the much higher priced units. Video inputs, Backup camera input, Blu tooth, etc... Sound is good considering I am using my stock speakers and no amplification other than the receiver. Menus are easy to understand and get to. Overall look of the unit is clean. As always, Crutchfield supplied everything needed for an easy install. Only reason I didn't give it all 5 stars on the Build Quality is that the Volume knob is really small and has no resistance. This makes it somewhat difficult to adjust while driving. Also the buttons above and below the knob give no feedback as to if they are pushed, kind of "squishy" feeling. I have to push them at a certain angle to get them to work. Overall for the price, excellent choice. I have to agree with everyone else on the Blu tooth sound quality. I called my work voice mail from my truck with it not running and windows up, first not using the Blu tooth but straight from my phone. Then using Blu tooth and I listened to the messages. The one using Blu Tooth almost was unintelligible. Close to the mic or far away, facing or not, didn't make a difference. I don't think it's the actual Blu tooth connection because the music streaming over the Blu tooth from my iPhone sounds great. I would still buy again for the price I paid!

    Pros: Features, Price.

Cons: Blu tooth phone sound quality. Button feel.

    Good product, great customer service

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I ordered this to replace the factory stereo on my wife's 2004 Ford Explorer. She was looking for a better way to play her iPod than the FM transmitter we were using. This unit gave a hard line connection to the IPhone, Bluetooth for the iPhone, DVD playback and a de ent touchscreen. It was a refurbished unit, but it works fine. The most impressive thing was Crutchfield's customer service. I ordered the wrong wiring harness and Crutchfield sent me out the right harness at no charge. The stereo unit was shipped without a microphone unit, but a call to customer service was all that was needed to get a microphone sent out. Overall a great experience. I've never installed a stereo before, but all the information on the Crutchfield site took the anxiety out of the project.

    Good receiver but quirky!

AA from Houston, tx on 3/31/2012

If you are looking for pure sound quality, this unit is the best! I have gotten lot of compliments on the sound specially news and voice channels where the voice has to be crisp and clear. But if you are looking for ease of use this unit sucks big time. The touch user interface is old school touch screen with too many buttons on the screen. Trying to change channels or modes while driving is a nightmare. Also the accuracy of the touch screen is horrible. After using a smooth touch screen device like the iPhone this receiver is irritating to try and navigate. Next thing is the bluetooth. The sound quality as others have mentioned on the mic is bad. Other people can barely hear me. I have been to the installer couple of times with no luck. It gets the point across but if you want to talk for a long time or have a discussion forget about it. You have to constantly yell. Also the bluetooth works correctly only if one phone is configured. I had mine and my wife's phone and it would randomly connect to either one and most of the time neither one so I had to just keep one. The reception of FM stations is weak, even with the antennas connected properly, I hear static noise regularly like its going to loose the signal On the plus side, it has great video and screen. With kids its perfect, they are able to watch the screen clearly even from the back and during sunlight. Most other receivers and hard to watch when the sun is out. The last complaint is the startup time.

Pros: Great Sound Great Picture Lots of options: Bluetooth, Ipod audio and video, Nav addon, HD/Sirius/XM addons available

Cons: Flaky bluetooth Bad touch screen interface Poor FM reception Slow bootup time. Almost takes a minute before it plays from USB drive or CD. Annoying if you turn the radio on and off.

    Great Product!

    Pros: Everything

    Cons: Nothing

    Bad product, terrible tech support

World Traveler from Fort Myers, FL on 2/24/2012

The unit is hard to use, the bluetooth doesn't work properly, Kenwood tech support is terrible. They tell you to reset the unit every time a problem happens. I bought an external Sirus XM unit that wouldn't work until it was reset thus losing all my settings. Now I'm trying to use the bluetooth handsfree and the phone finds the unit but the Kenwood doesn't find the phone. What's Kenwoods solution? Reset the unit! The touch screen doesn't react properly either. I won't be buying another Kenwood again.

    Pros: None

Cons: Don't bother to buy a Kenwood product. They used to be a good company and now they are terrible.

    A little disatisfied

MacQ32 from Charleston, SC on 2/18/2012

Definitley a nice looking unit, really just wanted a nice double din to fit in my toyota and allow me to install my system from my Saab (Morel Tempo 6's + PG 200.4, (1) SI Mag v3 + alpine PDX 1000.1) First off, the mic is 100% garbage, no one can hear me, or i sound like im in a garbage can and incredibly tired. If I keep this unit I'll probably take that mic out and use a different mic. Not the biggest problem because I didn't really buy the unit for the purpose of answering/making calls. Still pretty annoying considering it's such a simple part of the headunit and they totally failed. (assuming its the mic and not something internal with the unit). Second gripe is the bluetooth, first off I fairly frequently need to toggle the unit from standby to bluetooth for it to pick up my device automatically. Really the bigger issue is my own fault for not fully researching but the coolness factor would be a 5 if I could stream metadata via bluetooth (album art, track info) onto this unit. Sadly you need AVRCP 1.3 or 1.4 to do this and that is not available in buletooth 2.0, which is what this unit has. iPod has worked more or less flawlessly. I believe the iPhone 4 & 4s will display netflix & iPhone navigation when plugged in with the iPod cable. But I'm pretty anti Apple so I dont know for sure. The iPod is all the apple I can live with myself owning. Kind of simple as far as audio controls eq etc. Shouldnt have bought in hindsight

Pros: Good iPod control + album artwork metadeta etc. iPhone integration (based on reviews, no experience first hand) Nice looking unit

Cons: Mic is totally useless Bluetooth 2.0 Sometimes need to restart unit to get it working (once its on and working properly it never fails

Great head unit for the price

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Alot of features packed into this unit. The menus are easy to navigate through. Bluetooth picks up my phone flawlessly every time I enter the vehicle. (just make sure you're not on a call while getting into the car. It hung up on me while connecting). The navigation feature is an awesome add-on. Vert fast calculations and easy to use...It's a Garmin (enough said). USB is very easy to use to view pictures or listen to songs. It is so much easier to add songs to a flash drive than making a new disc. I just wish that the flash drive didn't need to stick out of the front of the radio. In the pictures, it looks like there is a usb extension out the back of radio, but it is for Bluetooth adapter only. I don't listen to much radio, but the reception comes in good. I just wish that you could name the stations. Unless I missed something in the setup, my presets constantly change display by what was last read on rds. Not a real big deal, but I don't care what they were playing last time I had that channel on. I don't have an amp setup at this time, but how much money did Kenwood save by cutting out the 3rd set of rca's. Front+rear or Front+Sub? just put the extra rca's there. ALL in All, great radio for the price. Lots of cool features.

Pros: Color scheme blends perfectly because of customizable colors. I love that the background picture is also customizable. MP3's on DVD, what more could you ask for. Almost 1000 songs on a single disc. GPS is perfect (I've always loved Garmin)

Cons: touch screen seems alittle off at times. I sometimes hit the back button 3 times before it responds. Blu-tooth messed up on me twice so far. When I tried to end a call and I hit the red phone at the same time that the caller hung up, the radio froze up. I needed to turn the radio off then back on again. USB port only on front of radio. I wish it also had one on the back that I could run a usb extension to a hidden place(glove box etc.) so that I don't drive around with memory stick hanging out.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall, I would not recommend this product. Wish I would have never purchased it. Kenwood normally makes great products, but they dropped the ball on this one. Hopefully, they do better moving forward.

Pros: Looks cool. Blue tooth phone adapter works well. The hands free option is nice. Seems to have clear sound.

Cons: Touch screen is unresponsive, iPod feature does not work, Sounds is weak and the ability to adjust the sound is bad. This is one of the worst head units I have ever purchased. The factory radio was much better. Would not recommend. First time I have ever disliked a kenwood product. Hope this is not a trend with them. Antenna does not work at all. Cannot even pick up local stations. Should have kept my XM radio instead.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The interface is very easy to use. After going through the initial settings I was up and running in less than 5 minutes. I had no issues in creating my personal sound settings thanks to the touchscreen. It interfaces rather quickly when using Bluetooth to stream audio from your phone to the unit, I have had no issues so far. I also added the KNA-G610 Navigation unit which has been a big plus in my day to day use. The sound quality is clean and really brings out the highs, mids and lows. Things that you expect from an aftermarket unit.

Pros: Easy to use, plenty of features for the money.

    Cons: None to report.

Overall, a very nice receiver. Crutchfield provided all the necessary hardware and wiring necessary to install this receiver easily.

Pros: Nice display, easy-to-use touch screen gets you to the function you want without a lot of distracting options. This is essential when driving... less distractions means safer driving

Cons: Kenwood overall has a nice product here, but a few little things could be improved. The clock display should be LARGER on the screen.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've had this unit since September 2011 and it worked fine until I upgraded my palm phone to and iphone4s. Initially I could make calls from the unit through the phone. When I got the iphone 4s I could get calls coming in through the radio but calls going out through the radio are sporadic. It seemed to do it only on some occasions. I called Crutchfield tech support and tried there suggestions and then called Kenwood. They told me the radio had to be sent in for a firmware upgrade that only the technicians at Kenwood could perform. Fortunately I was going to New Jersey where there was a facility so I removed the unit and had it serviced on the spot. the Kenwood service center told me that they had no firmware update for the iphone but that my bluetooth dongle had gone bad. They replaced it and showed me that it worked. I went home and reinstalled it and the same thing happened. Dialing out through the radio is enabled under somewhat still mysterious conditions although calls do come in through the radio. When I dial out through the phone or radio the dialog box shows that its going through the radio but I hear nothing.Anybody else encounter this? The music and all other iphone functions work fine. Everything else about this unit is great except of course for the microphone which has to be adjusted for each call it seems.

Pros: Volume knob Easy interface Relatively easy installation

Cons: Frustrating iphone 4s issue with making outgoing calls through the radio.

    Not bad for the buck

    Honest Review of the DDX418

Camden from Wilmington OH on 1/12/2012

I got this unit to replace a single din pioneer stereo in my truck. I would say that the sound quality is very comparable to my pioneer, if not beter. I put this in a 98 f150 and had to do some minor modifications to mt dash with a dremel to make it fit because my truck is a 1.5 din. Overall i would say that this is a great unit FOR THE PRICE. It seems people are being over-critical on this radio when in reality it is not that expensive compared to other brands. I am using it with an iphone 4 and i am very satisfied with the sound using a standard apple cord. The quality drops a little bit over bluetooth and i also noticed that it wont sned a signal to my subwoofer when it streams thru BT. It isnt really a big deal for me to plug it in vs. using BT. However the phone quality over BT is terrible. I have a feeling that this issue deals more-so with the mic being cheap vs. the unit itself. I am going to buy a better mic to test this out (3.5mm input). As far as the lag complaints go, i dont think it is bad enough to complain about. When you change to the next song, it plays the song instantly and the only thing that lags are the words and artwork. The appearance of the unit is great with 8 color choices and the setup of the screen interface is pretty sharp. The EQ settings are pretty good, i set it to where i have a HPF on my door speakers (80hz) with a LPF on the sub at 80 too. I ordered the kenwood iphone cord so i should be able to stream netflix, youtube and even GPS with MotionXGPS.

Pros: Price, sound, appearance, sensitive touch screen, everything except the mic.

Cons: Bluetooth Mic and veryyyyy minor lag.

    Needs Work

Read several good reviews on this product. Hoping for a good turn out. The bluetooth has several bugs. The iPod freezes often. Not very impressed. Espc. Because its from a name like Kenwood.

Pros: Nice design. Several options for the price.

Cons: The bluetooth is not worth your money at all.

Got this for my wife for Christmas to upgrade the stock system in her 08 KIA Sportage. Unit fit right in perfect with the supplied (by crutchfield) install kit and wire harness. So far so good, can't say anything bad about this. All functions work great, sound quality is excellent, looks good, price is nice. Bluetooth works quite well with all my mobile devices (HTC,Samsung,iPhone). Mic picks up anyone seated in the vehicle when mounted on the steering column. I'll be buying another DDX418 for my truck.

    Pathetic Bluetooth

    TomT from California on 12/10/2011

The Bluetooth microphone is the Achilles heel for this unit. It was terrible from the start. The unit is only one week old and when talking to anyone on the Bluetooth telephone, they can barely hear you and the sound is extremely tinny. It is so bad, that virtually every other word is unintelligible. I had the unit professionally installed and the mike put near the rear view mirror. The case against this unit was sealed after multiple calls/emails to the Kenwood Service Center and to Kenwood Tech Support. I have serious questions as to whether any of these people know what they are doing. Tech Support #1 said there is a firmware patch to fix the problem (if they knew it was a problem, why didn't they fix it earlier as it wasn't on the shelf long). Tech Support #2 said they didn't have a firmware for this model. So I talk with customer service. Customer service person #1 said "IF" there is any firmware upgrades, I have to ship the unit back to the factory service center for repair and if not, the Service Center would have to see if a repair is possible. Customer Service #2 said since it was so new, return it to the dealer. I tried to get them to ship me a new unit with the fix, but they won't do that, too much trouble. So I am returning the unit and am going to buy a different brand. Poor customer service just clinched the deal for a different manufacturer.

Pros: Easy to use menu, large icons. Good sound.

Cons: Bluetooth microphone sound and Kenwood Service Center.

    Does its job very well

After reading reviews for weeks, and testing different units hands on in stores. The DDX418 Just looks and feels better than the others.Despite the negative reviews of the bluetooth.I bought it anyway and the Bluetooth worked flawlessly. Streams music from my android phone with excellent sound quality. Phone book, missed calls, outgoing calls preset numbers all show up on the screen seemlessly. Took the advice of another reviewer and let the bluetooth dongle hang from under the glovebox with no obstructions and it works great. Also, do not mount the mic near any window of your car. This will cause unwanted noise. I mounted my mic on the middle console below the radio and a/c controls and havn't had any complaints from anyone that calls me. The only issues are I cant play my MP4 movies from a flash drive or the dvd drive.Only Ipod/Iphone for MP4 movies. And no Sat radio integration. Will have to get a stand alone sat radio unit. The sound quality over the stock unit is night and day. the ddx418 makes my factory speakers sound great. Also like the ability to change colors on the buttons to match the interior. The overall looks and aesthetics are important to me. I have a nice late model truck and everything looks better than factory. If you want a solid, good looking and sounding unit, buy it now.

Pros: Sound quality is top of the line. In my opinion looks better in person than any other unit under 1000 bucks,

Cons: Doesn't play MP4 files from usb or disk drive unless you have an Ipod/Iphone. Should have been sat radio ready.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So far so good. I haven't tried the much maligned bluetooth yet. Sound is good. Screen/video quality is good. Major nits: 1) It is not able to recognize my android USB audio files. Argg!!!! 2) Would be nice if the tuner could remember your equalizer settings for each preset. I like classic, country, rock, and some top-40. I don't use the same settings for each, and it's a MAJOR pain to change them every time I change stations. At the bare minimum, they could have included quick selections from the tuner screen, but nooooo. You've got to exit tuner mode, go back to the main screen, hit the settings button, select audio, then select the audio mode. Minor nits: 1) When watching a DVD, I have a hard time making menu selections. Something about it does not work quite right, or it's not intuitive. 2) I wish the I could name the presets. P1, P2, P3, ... is not very informative. 3) There are three "seek" modes, that determine what happens when you hit the next button: manual tune, auto tune, and next preset. This is ok, but the selection status is low contrast, small, and difficult to read 4) In general, more customization of the user interface would be nice.

    Good Value

    2002 Ford Escape
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Even though you can change the display color, the main screen color is not adjustable and mainly is set in blue. The display color can be adjusted to about 8 colors, but the color only changes the 4 buttons on the left hand side of the receiver. In fact, if you change the display to any other color other than blue, it looks kinda weird. I did not have navigation or Bluetooth hooked up, so no comment on those. Fit was OK with Ford Escape, a little modification to the dash. The finish deck does not fit flush with the factory dash, sets in about 1/2 inch. No worries. iPod works fine. There is a delay with changing songs/albums more so than just headphones plugged into your ipod. All in all, ipod is easy to play onscreen or in hand (adjustable from both) and gets the job done while charging my iPod while the key is on.

Pros: Lot of value for the money. I purchased refurbished from Kenwood. Lots of features on models more expensive. Expandability. USB in the front, which can be used as a charger as well for my iPod.

Cons: Although Kenwood and Crutchfield claim you need the Kenwood cable to plan an iPod or iTouch, it is not true. I used a Apple USB cable and a aux cord and it works fine. It may not be as fast as the USB 2.0 cord, but it does not bother me. Some of the buttons are small like the "shuffle", skip, FF, which can be difficult to press while driving. DVD and videos do not play when driving.

    I expected more from Kenwood

    John from Maryland on 10/9/2011

I purchased the unit because it had all of the features that I was looking for. The amplifier is great. The dvd player works great. The radio works great. I feel that it was a little "SNEAKY" of Kenwood to offer an ipod connection BUT, the only way that the ipod will work is for you to purchase "THEIR" cord (more money to spend). Why not build it to accept the APPLE connector???...and last..the bluetooth connection for the "hands free" feature on your phone is probably one of the worst that I have experienced. Everyone cannot be wrong! Why does Kenwood think that this is ACCEPTABLE!??? If they are going to add a bluetooth feature atleast try to make it work alot better than it is now. I am a little dissapointed.

Screen is somewhat laggy compared to the Clarion that I replaced. I find myself sitting staring at a "please wait" screen while the unit attempts to catch up with me pressing the "next track" button. iPod controls show the correct albums for an artist, but the wrong songs. Unfortunately, I use my iPod more than anything else and there is no point in keeping this head unit if it will not show the correct information. I haven't even had a chance yet to try the bluetooth so I can't comment on its performance.

The whole new look for this unit is very helpful and amazingly set up. The ipod is so easy to control and sounds amazing. But the bluetooth was just awful. I have an iPhone 4 and it wasn't worth a flip. I could hear people perfectly fine but they couldn't hear me at all, they said i was breaking up and said there was a lot of distortion. If you have an iphone 4, i encourage not to buy this product, but if you don't and you want a nice sounding radio, this one is for you. sounds amazing

It fits well in the dash, makes my sub sound nice, movies are great, main speakers are much better with this HU. Issues: -- Like many things these days, the instructions are not clear at all in how to set it up; so some things you guess at. --Bluetooth, sounds awesome when they are talking- terrible when I talk. They say it sounds like I am in outer space and it is ringy or too loud. I have moved the mic to various locations and have not found the solution as of yet. -- Music CDs don't indicate what is playing, but book is not so clear on that. I burned one and it still has no info over a store bought CD. -- USB is a nice touch, but it does something weird with jacket covers and jpgs on the USB, can't figure out what it is since the manual doesn't address it.

Before I bought this stereo I searched all the reviews I could find! Not much on this model but it had Bluetooth streaming! I love that feature but everyone here said it cuts out all the time! I dunno! Mine has never cut out at all! I don't use the mic because I have a jawbone era! The mic is not connected! But streaming music is excellent! I dropped the Bluetooth dongle right out under the stereo so there is no obstruction to my iPhone 4 running iOS 4.3.3! I know when there are things in the way of the Bluetooth visual like my body my Bluetooth cuts out so I made sure to let the dongle hang down! Movies are great in it! It's just a great unit! Very happy with it! Maybe everyone else either needs to update their phone or drop the dongle down so it can see the phone!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This Player works great, and fits perfectly in my 2007 impreza. Good EQ adjustments, easy to use settings, bluetooth works great. Iphone/ipod control you will need to buy the optional cable Kenwood KCA-IP22F otherwise control is not ideal, but you can still get audio with apple usb cable. The cover for the usb port when not in use is flimsy and my guess is in time it will break off especially if you open and close it constantly, a slide up plastic door like on the dnx503 would be better. Also for visual adjustments the background can be changed to anything which is nice but the touchscreen buttons "disc" "tel" ect can only be the default blue which makes some color backgrounds not quite as good as id hope. Great head unit for those that want a touch screen and cant afford the $1000 ++ units

Kenwood is middle of the road on this one

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have mixed reviews about this radio. I did a substantial amount of reviewing and comparisons and I went with the Kenwood because it had a much higher RMS wattage (22) compared to my other two choices, Pioneer (a paltry 14??) and Sony (17). And it had expandability options, and it has streaming audio. SO the Good aspects: Outstanding radio sound quality, DVD display/sound is awesome. Great expansion options, rearview camera, nav, external video in/out. User Interface is really easy and the touchscreen is very responsive. Tweak the sound very well using the three band EQ, Separate X-overs for Front, Rear, and Subwoofer level. Now the BAD: Other reviews warned me...BLUETOOTH is terrible. I have an iPhone 4. I can hear people just fine, but every single person I spoke with said they could not hear me, there was static, distortion. A friend bought same unit same week I did he has ALSO had terrible problems with the bluetooth in regards to people hearing him. We have both tried relocating the Microphone, also relocating the (questionably ridiculously long) bluetooth dongle cord thing that runs out the back of the unit. This Bluetooth is considered "included" and not "BUILT IN" and I believe that may be the root of the problem. Also, the streaming audio from my iPhone is distorted which again seems to be a connectivity issue. I am sending this unit back. Crutchfield has been very easy to work with (as usual!) but I am disappointed in Kenwood on this one.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this radio and was very pleased with the overall look and finish. I installed it will very little trouble and liked the user interface. You are able to program the home screen to three quick buttons for setting such as Phone, Radio, or CD/DVD to make changing the fuctions quick. The sound quality was OK and I really expected more from this Kenwood. The iPod/iPhone interface was less than stellar. Basic functions to operate the iPod/iPhone music options. I did really like the bluetooth streaming for the iPhone and found this was easier than plugging it in and make more sense. The bad for this radio came when trying to use the bluetooth with the iPhone, this was very very bad. I could get the phone to connect but it would drop the signal all the time and would not call out or receive calls through the unit. I had to make calls and receive calls on my phone. I also could not use the dial pad on the screen to put in a number can call directly for the unit, this was on of the reasons I got the unit. I returned it because of this and the fact that the CD/DVD player would not read any disks so I never got to see that part in action. Crutchfield was great about the return and sent out the Pioneer 3300BT as a replacement and I am very pleased with the new unit. This was my first experience with Crutchfield and would recommend them to anyone, you can't go wrong ording from this website!

It's a very nice deck with many many options. The only thing that knocks it down a star is the clarity of bluetooth (microphone input and wireless audio output). It works, and it's functional, but not quite as clear as I would like.

So-so unit, that could be great if Kenwood improves it

Felix from Bristow, VA on 4/18/2011

Cons: Bluetooth call quality is poor, as mentioned by other reviewers. Callers tell me I sound like very far away, and a lot of echo is perceived. I have tried changing the position of the mic, lowering/increasing mic volume, changing the BT options for this stereo from my Blackberry's BT options, in order to activate echo control, etc., to no avail. Kenwood customer service's reply was to move mic farther away from speakers and/or use another phone. So, not too helpful. Also, my Itouch 3G has a problem with this unit. Artists starting with "R" will start showing correct albums, but not the correct songs within those albums. I noticed that the songs being shown are those of the artists starting with the letter "A". Weird. Problems reading custom DVD+Rs. Equalizer only for 3 bands (wished more bands). Itouch/ipod needs a specific cable for audio/video. Expect to pay around $30 for it. Pros: Sounds improves over stock stereo (but not by a lot). Nice screen colors, resolution. Quick connectivity to BT from my Blackberry, importing phonebook, missed calls, etc. Calls can be made from screen or from the BB itself.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am pretty happy with the unit so far. The DVD and iPod functions work very well. The bluetooth does have some issues with people being able to hear me. I also have the NAV unit attached, and other than the maps not having great detail, it also works very well. To me the stereo and iPod sound really good, and improved the sound of my factory speakers. Touch screen is very responsive and the unit looks good in my 2006 Civic dash. The unit was priced reasonable, but the NAV is a very expensive add-on. Crutchfield was very helpful on this purchase and the installation kit and instructions were very complete.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Let me just say the Kenwood always make a great product. I bought this to replace the infamous Mygig radio in a Dodge Nitro. The Mygig was nice but the resolution and LCD display quality left a lot to be desired. I have a DDX512 in my Honda Civic and still love it 3 years down the road (with add-on Sirius). I installed the DDX418 in my Nitro thinking I can live without Sirius (only offered on the Higher end 2011 Kenwood double din models for some reason). I was wrong and am sending it back and exchanging it for a Sony XAV-62BT since it has similar specs & features, is still a 2011 model, has a Sirius option... Plus it's, well, a Sony. I am still giving this unit 5 stars because the LCD display is awesome. Bright and readable in sunlight, resolution is great and has so many adjustments it's like they were reading my mind when they designed it. If you are addicted to Sirius/XM it may feel like someone removed an arm (or at least an ear).

I am a big supporter of Kenwood products. For the price this model is very good. The touch screen is really responsive. Bluetooth connectivity is great. Menu is user friendly. One complaint would be that the USB connection for Ipod control is in te front and the bluetooth only USB is a long wire that isn't necessary. All in all i'm pleased with it.

    Great unit other than Bluetooth

De'Jay from Cincinnati, OH on 3/23/2011

I travel a lot for work and I'm on the phone most of the day. I wanted a head unit that offered bluetooth so after doing my research I felt that this unit would be the one for me based on the features and price... I am very happy with it OTHER than the TERRIBLE bluetooth... Kenwood really needs to come up with a fix for this because EVERY single call I try to take on bluetooth no one can understand me, they say I'm breaking up, it sounds like I'm in a tunnel, I echo, ect... I spent 2 hours one night trying everything I could think of, talking louder, talking softer, moving the mic, adjusting the mic volume, adjusting the volume on the head unit, adjusting the volume on my phone, moving my phone, trying multiple phones, ect... NOTHING helped. Overall great unit for the money but the bluetooth is a total waste.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm sorry to say I was unhappy with this as far as Bluetooth goes, this is the main reason I purchased it. I am using an iPhone 3GS and it does stream music but the high sounds are terrible. It's very tin canny, as if someone was dragging a tin can on the road. It also cuts in and out at least 3 times per song. Phone calls drop out as well. Also was unable to get song lists, title and artist to show up on the screen, at least this unit allows you to use the iPhone to select songs if you want or you can skip songs on the touch screen. Extremely disappointed in Kenwood on this one. I do put Kenwood high up on my list of quality, but not his time. However the rest of the unit is awesome. Sound from the radio outstanding, DVD video and sound, fantastic. Touch screen works flawlessly. I was extremely disappointed that I had to return it because I LOVE the rest of it. Crutchfield was awesome about this, they sent me another unit because we thought the Bluetooth might be defective, not the case, and yes I did try several other iPhones with the same results. So if you are getting this unit for any other reason than Bluetooth I give it a 5 star rating. Get the DDX318 (no Bluetooth)

    Corolla Install

Mark from Cumming, GA on 2/12/2011

Just installed this headunit as of today so this will be a first impressions review. As background I have done Sound Quality and dB in the past. I have installed more stereo systems that I can count though never professionally. So first impressions. It came down to this or a comparable Pioneer. The choice was clear when it came to user interface. This unit is so intuitive that anyone can master its functions in about 30 minutes. Huge plus when it comes to making selections while driving. While this unit cannot be upgraded for XM or Sirius it has plenty of entertainment options. Video is crisp and clear, especially for this price range. The on-board amp delivers good sound quality to my Alpine type S components in the front. I have no problem with only having 2 RCA pairs as you can select the rear to be a Sub output. In true SQ there is no need for rear speakers. Only one small complaint. With a thumb drive in the front USB slot the touch screen for "MENU" is partially hidden from the driver. Bluetooth works awesome, sound is great, menus are simple to get through. 10/10 so far. Will update. I would give 4 stars for lack of expandability to Sat or HD radio, but if you are not interested in these options its a 5 star. Have to rate on what it was made to be. If you are considering this one. Get it. You will not be sorry.

    Display Features

2-DIN Chassis: The DDX418 has a 2-DIN chassis (also known as Double DIN or size DD), and will fit in many vehicles with a large dash opening. The unit can be ISO-mounted using factory brackets, or Euro-mounted using the supplied mounting sleeve.

Note: As always, please consult the Crutchfield Car Selector to verify fit with your vehicle.

6.1" Touchscreen Display: The Kenwood DDX418 features a fixed 6.1" wide, 16:9 touchscreen display with a TFT active matrix system. The screen has a resolution of 800 (H) x 480 (V) x RGB with 1,152,000 total pixels. This unit has touch screen controls with interactive video graphics, making menu navigation easy. The unit has a front-loading disc-slot to make loading your disc easier because there is no panel to slide or fold-down.

Aspect Ratio: You can change the aspect ratio for video playback. You can select from Full (16:9), Just (4:3 LB), Normal (4:3), or Auto (automatically selects to match incoming video signal)

Picture Adjustment: You can adjust the unit's display brightness, contrast, color, tint, sharpness, and black level to suit your viewing needs during video playback.

Custom Background Images: You can download a still image for use as the unit's background from a connected USB thumbdrive.

Multi-Language Display: For your convenience, this unit is equipped with a multiple language display. You can select the language which is best suited to your first language - English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Dutch, Russian, Portuguese, Chinese (simplified/traditional), Thai, Turkish, Arabic, Persian, Hebrew, or Greece.

Note: For connected external monitors, only English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Dutch, Russian, and Portuguese are available.

Front Panel Controls With Changeable Illumination: In addition to the touchscreen controls, the unit includes frequently used buttons and a rotary-dial along the left edge of the screen. You can adjust the head unit's button illumination from the following preset colors - Blue, Purple, Sky Blue, Yellow, Green, Amber, Red, Pink, White or Scan (Scans through all preset colors). You can also select a custom "User" color that is adjusted between Red, Green, and Blue (values range: 0-31).

Parking Brake Detection: To prevent the display of video while the vehicle is in motion, the light green wire (attached to the rear-chassis) must be connected to the vehicle's parking brake detection circuit. While the vehicle is in motion (parking brake off), you can still view all of the other displays and menus.

Dimmer: The dimmer function will dim this unit's display automatically when the vehicle light switch is turned On when you connect orange/white Illumination wire of this player's harness.

    Audio Section

24-Bit D-A Converter: For superb quality audio playback from DVDs, CDs, and USB media, the DDX418 is equipped with a 24-bit digital-to-analog converter.

MOSFET Amplifier: The Kenwood DDX418 is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit. The power output specs for the DDX418 are as follows:

    • Full Bandwidth Power: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20-20kHz, 1% THD)
    • Maximum Output Power: 50 watts x 4 channels

Speaker Type Setting: This feature tailors the DDX418 according to the type of front speakers in your vehicle. You may select Standard (for speakers with a general diameter), Narrow (for speakers with a small diameter), Middle (for speakers with a medium diameter), or Wide (for speakers with a large diameter).

System Q Sound Control: Seven EQ curves are preset into memory, allowing you to recall the best preset EQ curve for different types of music. Each preset has its own level settings for bass (100Hz), midrange (1kHz), and treble (12.5kHz). You can choose from the following preset EQ curves - Rock, Pops, Easy, Top 40, Jazz, Natural, and User.

Detail Audio Control: The Kenwood DDX418 features independent Bass, Treble and Midrange control when the System Q Sound Control is in User mode. The Detail Audio Control allows you to adjust the following settings for the Bass, Treble and Mid frequency levels.

    3-Band EQ Detailed Audio Settings
Center Frequency Q-Factor Bass Extension Level
    Bass 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 100, 120, or 150 Hz 1.00, 1.25, 1.50, or 2.00 On/Off -8 to +8
    Midrange 0.5k, 1.0k, 1.5k, or 2.0k Hz 1.00 or 2.00 N/A
    Treble 10.0k, 12.5k, 15.0k, or17.5k Hz N/A N/A

Dynamic Range: The dynamic range can be adjusted by selecting either Normal, Wide or Dialog. Dialog makes the total sound volume become larger as compared with Wide and Normal, allowing you to listen to the movie's dialogue more clearly. This is effective only on Dolby Digital software.

Loudness: The Loudness feature compensates for low and high tones during low volume. You can turn this feature either on or off. Only the low tone is compensated for when the tuner is selected as a source.

Volume Offset Control: The level of each source may be independently adjusted to prevent radical leaps in output volume when switching from one source to another. The available settings range from -15 to +6.

Selectable 4V Preamp Outputs: The DDX418 features Front and Rear/SW 4-volt preamp outputs. The Rear/SW preamp output allows you to adjust from a full-range rear speaker preamp output to a low-pass, non-fading subwoofer preamp output.

Front & Rear High-Pass Filter: The DDX418 features an independent High-Pass Crossover for the front & rear channels when your front & rear speakers are connected by the unit's speaker-outputs or preamp-outputs. You can adjust the high-pass crossover from "Through", 40, 60, 80, 100, 120, 150, or 180, 220Hz. The "Through" selection is a full-range setting. This feature is very helpful when you have smaller-type speakers in the front and larger-type speakers installed in the rear of the vehicle.

Subwoofer Controls: The Kenwood DDX418 provides the following subwoofer preamp output controls.

    • Low-Pass Filter: The receiver features a built-in Low Pass Filter control for the unit's subwoofer preamp output. You can select from 50, 60, 80, 100, 120Hz, or "Through". The "Through" setting allows your external amplifier's crossover network to do all the filtering for your subwoofer.
    • Subwoofer Phase: You can adjust the phase of the subwoofer output between 180-degrees (Reverse) or 0-degrees (Normal).
    • Subwoofer Level: You can independently control the subwoofer preamp output level from the CD receiver. You select levels between -15 to +15.

Source Tone Memory: This feature allows you to store System Q, and bass, middle and treble tone settings for each source (Disc, Tuner, USB, AV-In).

Dolby Digital/DTS: The DDX418 supports playback of Dolby Digital and DTS 2.0 DVD discs and will convert multi-channel Dolby Digital sources to 2-channel.

Key Beep: The in-dash multimedia head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

    Radio Functions

AM/FM Tuner: The Kenwood DDX418 features a built-in AM/FM tuner. You can choose one of three tuning modes: Auto 1 (seek tuning), Auto 2 (cycles through and tunes the selected band's preset stations only with each button press), or Manual.

Radio Data System (RDS): The unit's tuner features RDS (Radio Data System). RDS is a service used by some radio stations to transmit data outside of normal radio broadcast signals. When an RDS station is received, you can immediately find out what kind of data is being transmitted by looking at the program service name which appears in the display after the frequency. RDS features an emergency transmission function which interrupts regular programming to broadcast an emergency announcement (such as a tornado or severe storm). There is also a switchable Traffic Information function, which will automatically tune a traffic bulletin when it is broadcast, even when you're not listening to the radio.

Auto Memory Tuning: Not only does the multimedia receiver's tuner allow you manually enter your desired presets you can choose to have the unit automatically put stations with good reception in the memory banks automatically; this is a handy feature when traveling.

Mono Mode: This feature reduces the noise (static) when a stereo broadcast is received as monaural (for FM band only).

    Disc Playback

    Compatible Discs: The Kenwood DDX418 supports playback of DVD-Video, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, CD-Audio, CD-Text, CD-R/RW, DTS-CD, and VCD discs.

Note: The unit has a front-loading disc-slot to make loading your disc easier because there is no panel to slide or fold-down.

AAC/MP3/WMA Playback: This unit can play AAC (16-320 kbps), MP3 (32-320 kbps) and WMA (32-320 kbps) files recorded on CD-R/RW, DVD-R/RW, and DVD+R/W discs in ISO9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, and Romeo formats. The head unit can recognize a total of 5,000 files and 250 folders per disc (a maximum of 999 filers per folder). During AAC/MP3/WMA playback, the unit displays song, artist, and album information (up to 50 characters). The unit supports ID3 Tag version 1.0, 1.1, 2.2, 2.3, and 2.4.

JPEG/MPEG Playback: This unit can play back JPEG (32 x 32 to 8192 x 7680) still image files recorded onto DVD-R/W, DVD+R/W, and CD-R/W discs. The unit also supports video playback of MPEG1 & MPEG2 (NTSC) video files recorded onto DVD-R/W and DVD+R/W discs.

Folder/Track List: The Folder/Track List allows you to search folders and audio/video/picture files stored on a disc.

Playback Screen: During DVD playback, you can control certain operations simply by touching an area of the screen. The touchscreen has 4 functions areas. You can touch the left of the screen to start the current chapter over, or the right of the screen to skip to the next chapter. Pressing the top center of the screen activates the DVD Disc Menu control buttons, while pressing the bottom center briefly displays the information screen.

Zoom: The DDX418 features a 4 level zoom when playing back video and still images.

Auto Insert: The DVD player will automatically reinsert the disc if it's ejected, but not removed for 15 seconds or more.

    USB/iPod Connectivity

USB Port: The Kenwood DDX418 features a front-panel Full-Speed 2.0 USB (type-A) port which enables playback of MP3 (32-320 kbps), WMA (32-320 kbps), and AAC (16-320 kbps) audio files; as well as JPEG (32 x 32 to 8192 x 7680) still-picture files stored on a USB Mass Storage Class device. The DDX418 also supports video playback of MPEG1, MPEG2 video files from a connected portable USB MSC device. The USB port is compatible with all USB mass storage class devices formatted in FAT16 or FAT32 file system. The head unit can recognize a total of 5,000 files and 250 folders per USB device (a maximum of 999 filers per folder). The unit will display any recorded song, artist, and album information stored on your connected USB device (up to 50 characters). Your USB device's rechargeable battery will be recharged while it is connected to the USB port of the DDX418 and the unit is turned on.

iPod/iPhone Connectivity: The Kenwood DDX418 supports audio/video playback from select Apple iPods and iPhones.

    • Audio/Video Playback: The Kenwood DDX418's front-panel USB (type-A) port and front-panel 3.5mm A/V AUX input allow you to connect your Apple iPod/iPhone using the Kenwood KCA-iP22F iPod cable (113KCIP22F, sold separately). The unit's USB port handles the control, metadata display, and charging of your iPod/iPhone. You can navigate through your music and video files using the head unit's touchscreen controls and view song and movie info on its display, while your iPod/iPhone charges. The 3.5mm AV input handles audio and video transfer from your iPod/iPhone to the Kenwood DDX418. By using the Auxiliary input, the music travels to the receiver as an analog signal, so you can even play the Digital-Rights-Protected files you've stored on your iPod/iPhone. The unit's front-panel AV input must be set to "iPod" in order to playback audio/video from your connected iPod/iPhone. Video can only be displayed while the vehicle is in park.
    • Audio Only Playback: If you only want to playback audio from your iPod or iPhone, you can simply connect it to the DDX418's USB port using either the USB/iPod dock cable that came with your iPod/iPhone or Kenwood's iPod Direct Connect Cable (113KCIP102, sold separately). This 1-wire USB connection bypasses the iPod/iPhone's DAC and sound quality is maximized through the head unit's 24-bit D/A converter, allowing for a Signal-to-Noise ratio up to 99dB. The unit's front-panel AV input must be set to "AV-In" in order to use the 1-wire USB connection. You will not be able to play Digital-Rights-Protected files.
