Our take on the Kenwood DDX7017

Fill your double-sized dash opening (4" tall) with Kenwood's DDX7017 — you'll have a 6.5" video screen sitting flush in your dash. The touchscreen controls and easy-to-follow menus give you total command over all the system's functions. When you need to insert a CD or DVD, the monitor motors down to give you access to the slot.

When you're parked, you can enjoy your favorite DVDs on the video screen. Connect a backseat video screen and a set of wireless headphones to the audio/video outputs, and your passengers in the back can watch movies while you drive. In the meantime, you get to listen to another source, such as the radio, up front.

No matter what you're listening to, the advanced sound controls ensure that it'll sound great in your vehicle. The built-in amplifier puts out plenty of power, and works hard to ensure that your music and movies sound full and forceful. For even more power, connect external amplifiers to the three sets of preamp outputs; their 5-volt rating means your amps will receive a clean signal for peak performance.

You get several options for expanding your system. Two audio/video inputs give you the option of connecting both a VCR and a video game system. Add a satellite radio and subscription to the service of your choice, and you'll be able to enjoy everything SIRIUS or XM have to offer. Connect Kenwood's HD Radio tuner, and you can listen to enhanced AM/FM broadcasts (where available). Kenwood's optional iPod™ control interface allows you to connect and control your iPod with the DDX7017.

Note: Your dash must have a 4" opening for the DDX7017 to fit; the 3" openings found in some vehicles, especially GM and Chrysler, will not accommodate it. Please enter your vehicle information or call a Sales Advisor at 1-888-955-6000 to find out if this model is compatible with your vehicle.

14 Month Review

Gary from Brick, NJ on 10/10/2006

I waited until now (14 months) to review this unit so that most people could get a better idea other than folks who rate it after a few days or a week. This unit is rock solid! Period! I bought it because I'm a Sales Rep and cover 8 North Eastern states and needed tunes and Nav. I had it custom installed in my 2001 Acura 3.2TL as it wasn't plug-n-play at double DIN. At time of install, I went with Polk component speakers in all 4 doors (no tweeters in rear), a 3 channel amp in the trunk powering the front set of speakers and the 10" sub. The sound really is unbelievable with plenty of settings to satisfy the most discriminating ear. As for the backgrounds, they're fine, plain, but's a radio, not an entertainment center! The DVD playback is flawless, crisp, clear, no skipping..ever. The fact that you can record 700 MP3 songs on a DVD and play them is awesome...with TAG info that will scroll across the bottom. The iPod (I have a 30gig iPod Video)interface is worthless, don't waste your money like I did. I removed the interface and just installed a 3 plug RCA (left, right audio and yellow video)to the second video input and there you go...connect a power cord to the Ipod and it's easier to see the song and video info on the iPod than the head unit screen. I used the Video 1 input for my XM radio(Roady 2) and that sounds awesome as well and I can remove it and use it in my house or hotel room as I travel. The Nav system is second to none. It is near perfect, you can mark locations as you need and find what you want by touch screen. The unit lowers the music volume to give directions as needed (my biggest feature I love) Pricey, but worth it!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is an excellent unit and fit well in the factory alloted space and looks terrific! The add on Sirius controller and back up camera power source also fit in with little problem.<BR>I agree with all the previous comments re: the substandard manual and the bulky and confusing remote (and remotes should not be this difficult to master) but with all the other excellent qualities of this unit this will be easy to overlook!!!<BR>The questions the manual did not address well the Crutchfield technical support group were completely on top of and had immediate responses for.<BR>I am looking forward to this unit being a big hit!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

just purchased & installed this unit today. Install was pretty easy (less than 60mins, not incl. wiring harnesses), and it fits very nicely. It plays DVDs (pic quality is excellent, and the player is very stable on the road), CDs (displays ID3 info if avail.), MP3 discs (displays file/song names & other info if desired), and it also displays FM radio stations' info (where transmitted)! I was going to order a sub too, but the bass put out by this HU is plenty! One gripe is that there is no SFC (sound field control) for producing a "live", "stadium", or "concert hall" sound effect for music; my old HU (Kenwood DPX6020) had this feature & i used it quite a bit. Also, the ordinary backgrounds get old real fast. I haven't had as much trouble with the remote as other folks have; however, the instr. manual is NOT very helpful! U can tell it was written by engineers. But on the whole, i'm very happy with the unit.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Several reviews told me this unit would not fit in my Envoy. After making some Mounting brackets it slipped in like "butta".Having one of the worst manuals I've ever seen I'm still in the process of learning how to navigate and getting things to work correctly. This is my second unit, the first developed a noise on the front panel display as it closed. Though in all this unit sounds pretty good, the display is very crisp on DVD's. The sound processing is very pleasing to use and Im using everything from the unboard crossover's to the built in EQ. It looks factory in my dash!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great Buy!!! Easy installation, I had it working in less than 2 hours.. Only down side were the provided screws were to short for the side mounts. I had to make a quick run to the hardware store to pick up longer screws. I wired it up to play the DVD while driving. Check your local laws for this!! I agree with everyone else on the remote issue. It feels bulky and is confusing to use. The features & touch screen are awesome. My Sirius connection is 100 times clearer now. My friends with Sirius plug & play units now want me to install this in their vehicles. It would have received 5 stars if the remote was easier to maneuver.

better than my old clarion flip out

Sweet unit! You can have different screens with different audio or turn the screen off all together. I love the funcionality of this unit as well as great sound. I had this unit installed im my 2006 F-250 and it looks great. The navigation is also cool and works great.<BR><BR>Down side: remote not great, but the touch screen makes up for it. If the remote was better this would get a 5 of 5.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I actually got this head unit as an exchange/upgrade...Thanks to Crutchfield's excellent exchange program...<BR>This KENWOOD UNIT ROCKS!<BR>I put it in my 2004 Ford F150 with NO problems. I also went with the IPOD adapter, Sirius radio and 4 new Kenwood speakers...Installation was all plug and play. With no knobs, with nice clean lines, it makes the dash and unit look like it came from the factory...I love the touch screen and the interface is simple and straight forward. I will be adding an AMP and SUB soon...maybe some monitors in the seat headrests...(money willing)<BR><BR>Only draw backs...No playing movies while driving (not that I'd recommend that).<BR>It also needs a little more bass which was lost because it no long uses the stock woofer under the back seat...

Almost what I expected.

Michael K from Fort Smith, AR on 10/5/2005

This unit has all the basic functionality that you could want. However they have gone to no length to move this unit beyond the ordinary. You get 6 graphic options for your background and none of them are animations, that is 6.5 inches of pure boredom unless you are watching a Dvd and you aren't supposed to do that and drive. So overall it is a real let down. People are into personalization and this provides none.

Tuner Features

CR-2 Tuner: The DDX7017 uses Kenwood's CR-2 tuner provides high signal strength for clear radio reception. The tuner features the Clean Reception System Circuit (CRSC) for improved rejection of distortion due to multi-path. You can choose one of three tuning modes: Auto 1 (seek tuning), Auto 2 (cycles through and tunes the selected band's preset stations only with each button press), or Manual.

Satellite Radio Ready: You can connect a satellite radio tuner to the DDX7017 in a number of ways. The unit is directly compatible with the Sirius SIR-KEN1 Satellite Tuner for Kenwood (item # 607SIRKEN1). In addition, you can connect an independently controlled "plug 'n play" unit such as the Delphi SKYFi2 or Kenwood Here2Everywhere to the head unit through the optional Aux Input adapter (113CAC1AX or 113KCAS210). Note: In addition to the optional satellite tuner, you will also need the proper antenna and a subscription to Sirius or XM Satellite Radio.

HD Radio Ready: The DDX7017 is HD Radio ready. With an optional Kenwood HD Radio tuner (item #113HR100TR), you will be able to receive digital AM/FM broadcasts from local stations where available. This new technology will significantly improve audio quality and reception, as well as include information such as artist name and song titles or traffic news, viewable on the receiver's display.

TV Tuner Ready: You can tune local TV stations with the optional Kenwood KTC-V500N TV tuner (item #113KTCV500). The Auto Memory feature allows you to store up to 6 stations in each of two preset memory bands. Names for up to 20 stations can be stored in memory.

Weather Band Tuner Compatible: This unit is compatible with the Kenwood KTC-WB100 weather band tuner (sold separately). The optional tuner box allows you to tune in weather band radio stations. There are about 480 weather band radio stations in the United States, and this option allows you to tap into the information needed to prepare for outdoor activities such as sporting events, camping trips and days at the park.

Radio Data System (RDS): The unit's tuner features RDS (Radio Data System). RDS is a service used by some radio stations to transmit data outside of normal radio broadcast signals. When an RDS station is received, you can immediately find out what kind of data is being transmitted by looking at the program service name which appears in the display after the frequency. RDS features an emergency transmission function which interrupts regular programming to broadcast an emergency announcement (such as a tornado or severe storm). There is also a switchable Traffic Information function, which will automatically tune a traffic bulletin when it is broadcast, even when you're not listening to the radio.

Station Name Preset (SNPS): This feature allows you to assign names to radio stations. Up to 30 AM and FM stations can be named. Each name can be up to 16 characters in length. The Preset Select menu will display the six presets in each band either by name or frequency.

Audio Features

24-Bit D-A Converter: For superb quality audio playback from DVDs and CDs, the DDX7017 is equipped with a 24-bit digital-to-analog converter.

System Q EX Sound Control: Seven EQ curves are preset into memory, allowing you to recall the best preset EQ curve for different types of music. The preset curves are named "Natural", "Rock", "Pops", "Easy", "Top 40", and "Jazz". In addition, you may store your own settings under the "User Memory" EQ curve. Each preset has its own adjustment for the bass center frequency (40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 100, 120, or 150Hz), bass level (-8 to +8), bass Q factor (1.00, 1.25, 1.50 or 2.00), bass extension (On or Off), middle center frequency (500Hz, 1.0kHz, 1.5 or 2.0kHz), middle level (-8 to +8), middle Q factor (1.0 or 2.0), treble center frequency (10.0, 12.5, 15.0 or 17.5kHz), and treble level (-8 to +8). The System Q EX can be turned off in the menu, still allowing you to adjust the bass, middle and treble levels only.

Speaker Type Setting: This feature tailors the System Q EX Sound Control settings according to the type of front speakers in your vehicle. You may select Standard (for speakers with a general diameter), Narrow (for speakers with a small diameter), Middle (for speakers with a medium diameter), or Wide (for speakers with a large diameter).

System E's+ Advanced Crossover System: The System E's+ Advanced Crossover system allows you to tailor your system with selectable crossover points for all channels. For the front and rear channels, there is a high-pass filter with independently selectable crossover points of 40Hz, 60Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz, 150Hz, 180Hz, 220Hz or Thru (no filter). The non-fading preamp output, for use with subwoofer amplifiers, has a low-pass filter with a selectable cutoff frequency of 50Hz, 60Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz or Thru (no filter). You can also switch the phase of the subwoofer output from normal to reverse, and adjust the level of the output from -50 to +10 in 1dB steps.

Bass Management System (B.M.S.): This unit is equipped with an interface (pink/black wire in the wiring harness) which controls certain special features of B.M.S.-equipped Kenwood eXcelon amplifiers. This unit, when properly connected, can remotely activate and adjust the amount of bass boost in the amplifier. You can choose between +6dB, +12dB, or +18dB bass boost, or flat (no boost). In addition, you can lower the bass boost center frequency by 20%, switching between "Normal" and "Low".

Volume Offset Control: The level of each source may be independently adjusted to prevent radical leaps in output volume when switching from one source to another. The available settings range from -15 to 0.

Attenuator With Smooth Volume Return: The attenuator immediately lowers the volume by a 20dB. Smooth Volume Return gradually increases the volume to the original level when the ATT button is pressed a second time, eliminating a jarring change in volume.

CD Changer Controls

Compatibility: The DDX7017 is directly compatible with Kenwood changers manufactured in 1998 or later. If the changer has an O-N switch, the switch will need to be set to the "N" position. If you have a Kenwood changer manufactured before 1998, you will need the KCA-S210A switching adapter. Changers manufactured before 1994 require the CA-DS100 converter cord (113CADS100) and the KCA-S210A switching adapter.

Optional Auxiliary Input: Using an optional auxiliary input adapter, such as the CA-C1AUX, you can connect a portable audio source to this unit instead of a CD changer. With the KCA-S210A switch, you can connect the portable audio source in addition to 1 or 2 CD changers. This unit is also compatible with the KCA-iP500 iPod Control Interface.

Disc Name Preset (DNPS): When used with a compatible CD changer, this feature allows you to assign names to discs in the changer. Each name can be up to 16 characters in length. The number of names you can store depends on the CD changer that is connected to the head unit. The Disc Select menu will display the names of the discs 6 at a time.

CD Text/MD Display: When connected to a CD Text capable CD changer or an MD changer, this unit can display disc and track titles for discs encoded with disc and track title information. The text information can be scrolled manually or automatically.

Music Keg Compatible: The DDX7017 is fully compatible with the Kenwood Music Keg Digital Music System (models KHD-C710 and KHD-CX910).

Inputs and Outputs Notes

A/V Input: The DDX7017 is equipped with two built-in audio/video inputs, each with a set of stereo RCA jacks and a composite video jack on pigtails on the back of the unit. AV-IN1 can be named "VIDEO1", "DVD1", "VCD1", "VCR1", "GAME1", or "AUX1". AV-IN2 can be named "VIDEO2", "DVD2", "VCD2", "VCR2", "GAME2", or "AUX2". The AV-IN2 input can be set to only be viewed when it is switched to, or can automatically display an image whenever a signal from that input is received.

Rear View Camera Input: The unit has an additional video jack for connecting an optional rear view camera. The video from this input can be set to display when switched to with the Video Select button, or display the rear view camera video automatically when the vehicle is shifted into Reverse gear. You can also display the video of the rear view camera in a mirror image, if desired. Note: The pink wire supplied in the 8-pin harness must be connected to the vehicle's reverse lamp circuit for automatic video switching.

A/V Output: The unit features a set of stereo RCA jacks and a composite video jack to output A/V signals to an optional monitor. You can choose DVD, AV-IN1, or AV-IN2 as the source for the A/V output.

Parking Brake Detection: To prevent the displaying of video while the vehicle is in motion, the green wire in the supplied 8-pin harness must be connected to the vehicle's parking brake detection circuit, as well as a constant power source and ground. While the vehicle is in motion (parking brake off), you can still view all of the other displays and menus.

TV Tuner Input: The DDX7017 includes a 20-pin input for the optional Kenwood KTC-V500N TV tuner.

Navigation Input: You can connect a Kenwood navigation system to this unit via the maroon colored 13-pin jack on the back of the chassis.
