    Simple is Complex

I baught this to replace a fctory radio in a 1998 Buick Century. The factory radio and speakers sounded great untill i replaced it with this model. This radio sounds at best average or below for sound quality. The factory radio had much better sound than this thing. By the way the easiest thing was wiring. Installing into a GM dash is a lot of work but dooable if you know how to unclip your dash appart. Despite the hard work requred to install, belive it or not the most difficult part is setting up your radio. Just like some previous posts stated its a nightmare jumping from menu to menu just to set up the simple things. I would definitely not recomend this radio to anyone. On a bright note however, Crutchfield is a great place to shop!!

I like the radio so far, if I could change anything I would make the display bright enough to be seen during the dayime.

    Too much stuff!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got this as a direct replacement of an OEM single disk cd that was refusing to eject. Kids wanted ipod interconnectablilty and I called Crutchfield. My problems lie in the actual daily operation of the unit. I am not a stereo hound, just want good sound, easy operation, some bells and whistles and something that is attractive. The initial setup on this unit is hard. My son set my color to red and I cannot get it to change to blue (green is an option as well on this unit). The menus are hard to follow and the right hand knob acts like a mouse pointer (L/R, up/down) with a push to select the menu itme - problem is it is so touchy - when you push you inadvertantly select another item you don't want. Maybe it's my 40+ yr old fingers? The manual is confusing. I did get the date and time set and I really accomplished something! I have not gone to the trouble of programming aliases for my radio stations/CDs - no more frustration for me. Sounds good, too many techy things on it, looks nice, I like the remote even if my hands are 12" from the front face of it - makes it easy to scan, adjust volume when you scanning stations outside your home market. It fit my needs but I know I'm not using it to its' potential which really irks me. I'll live with the red glow until I figure it out and my teenagers can program for me when I decide I need the aliases on the screen.

    Kenwood Stereo System

payne from Camp Hill, PA on 7/17/2009

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I wanted a new stereo system b/c I do a lot of driving. So, I originally went with a Clarion(which I've never owned before) but it was horrible. I couldn't get a radio station not even two miles away. So, with my hubby's help I bought this Kenwood. I used to have a tapedeck (I know how old that sounds) by Kenwood and loved it, the price for this unit was more more than I wanted to buy espec. that the cable for the IPOD is $50 extra, though clarion offered it free with their package. Either way, some stations aren't clear, it's hard to read the time in the daylight & the manual is difficult. I'd go back to my sony explode in a heartbeat but they are just as expensive and now I give up b/c I'm tired of exchanging/returning everything. So, I'll make do but I'm not impressed with the reception at all.

    BAD ergonomics

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

sounds nice, face seams cheaply made,,trying to get through the different menu's is a real pain,, ive installed like 12 stereo's in my life and it took me an hour to change the color, and the manual is very confusing, reception is bad ,does not pick up channels like my old clarion,, but its in the dash now and its staying........

    Features won't disappoint, but pricey

Geoff from Syracuse, NY on 5/1/2009

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This Kenwood was recommended by a Crutchfield employee as an upgrade over the cheaper JVC model I originally ordered, which was out of stock. I wanted a double-DIN model to preserve the look of my car, and since my wife is the primary driver of this car ease of use and sensible controls were a priority. Installation was simple with Crutchfield's excellent documentation, and telephone support to help me sort out the wiring with the Schotke OEM adapter for the Bose speaker system was excellent. FM reception is better than the OEM system. as is the sound quality. The animations and pulsing lights which can be distracting can be turned off. My wife particularly likes the choice of colors for the lights surrounding the display (red/green/blue) and the larger than expected remote. The unit can be expanded with Kenwood iPod, BT, and satellite radio if desired, but for our purposes the built-in features suffice... the AUX input on the front works for our collection of iPods, and the CD reads MP3 discs. The only complaint I have is that the price for a double-DIN model seems to be about $100 more than for a single-DIN with comparable features. Kenwood does make good use of the extra real estate, with larger, more legible buttons and knobs and a large, easy to read display which dims to a comfortable level when headlights are on. All things considered, a good choice and reasonable value for anyone wanting a quality double-DIN head unit.

    Double din delight

    Scott from MA on 3/29/2009

    2008 Scion xB
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Having a double din can be tricky. Not too many options out there but this one is good. I coupled this with the sirius direct setup so that my sirius radio comes right through the head unit. What a great option and super easy to set up. My only complaint so far is the user manual/user controls. Having spent over $300 on this stereo head unit, I would have expected a model specific manual. This ain't no $100 radio after all. The manual is for 2 units with considerably different sets of functions. It was a bit confusing filtering through just what my stereo can do. Luckily, I'm pretty stereo literate and was able to decipher the less-than-intuitive function set. All in all, this is a great stereo for those with a double din space to fill. Anyone setting up a multi-amp system may beware of the limited pre-outs. Only 2 sets and the rear doubles as a sub out (switchable), though I found that my amp's crossover offered a better sound. Aux input on the front is great too. MP3 player or ipod works nicely here. And the multiple lighting colors are fun too.

Wish I Could Turn The Lights Off

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

If you are looking for a Double Din deck there aren't many options, but this is a pretty good one. I was looking for something that would have a little more of a factory look. The lights are more annoying than anything, but this is the most customizable head unit I have ever used. I spent 4 hours deciding how to set all the features to get it just how I wanted it. It does have some great options for what text to display on each different source. Reading mp3 tags is a pretty standard feature now, but being able to see the title of the song, the artist, and the album at the same time is not and that is exactly what this gives you.

Good Deal on a Good Deck

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got the double din to replace my factory unit in my 2005 Hyundai Sonata. The unit (with the free supplied installation kit) could not have been easier and the unit, when installed looks factory finished. No gaps! The deck has a few features I like (the different color illumination selection is nice) and the sound is much better than the factory unit (I did not install new speakers.) The menu is a bit clunky and I have had to reset the unit twice now because it has losts it's full menu and went into a truncted menu (the color is stuck on green because I can't get that menu anymore without resetting.) The layout is pretty understated and traditional (not for ayone looking for that boy racer look) but the buttons and knobs are virtually useless to anyone wearing gloves. For the price though, it fits perfectly in the old double slot and the sound is very clear and sharp with deep rumble free bass.

    Great unit, poor install kit

JP from Miami, Fl on 1/20/2009

    1996 Acura 2.5TL
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Professional install into a Acura. First thing the unit is great, no problems or complaints at all. Sound, display, controls all wonderful. Manual is a bit confusing but most are. The install kit is lacking. It is a plastic assembly, that slots together as you break off tabs to fit your model car. In contrast the factory assembly is a solid metal box. The has top and side pieces only. Each has several labeled tabs, that do not match the instructions, making it difficult to figure out with to remove and which to keep. The side pieces do not fit at all, no matter which tabs are removed or kept. The plastic frame parts are very thin, if used the unit would be held only by a narrow strip of thin plastic in the back. In the end my pro installer modified and used the original factory metal frame and only the outside trim of the provided kit, which we used double stick tape to attach. Again great unit, but Crutchfield needs a better kit supplier. That a 'custom' kit would be supplied was my main reason for buying it from Crutchfield too.

Great Unit, Good Quality and Functionality

Robert from Fort Collins, CO on 12/10/2008

    2001 Toyota Tundra
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Easy install for a 2001 Tundra Access Cab, just remove the face ring on this unit and install the factory brackets and you're all done. The user interface is well put together and easy to use. Note that you have different menu options in Standby mode then you would in other sources such as CD/Radio, not a big deal I guess. The buttons are appropriately located and user friendly. There are enough buttons to efficiently do what you want and still keep good aesthetics. Reviews of the Pioneer DD head unit prove that too much consolidation can be a real pain; I think Kenwood did a nice job here. It produces a clean strong sound without an amp, but don't kid your self, get an amp for true sound quality. The screen looks good straight on, but from the drivers or passengers angle the screen is a little heavy with "light" even with the contrast on its lowest setting. There is a display off feature; after a few seconds of no interaction, the screen goes dark until you interact with the unit or remote. The dimmer control is adequate for night driving. It's probably the best looking player that I have seen, just below a navigation system. The remote is set up well and is comfortable to use while driving. These are just some of the things that I noticed after using the unit, but there are a lot of other positives that Kenwood and Crutchfield have already listed in their descriptions. Overall I'm very satisfied with this unit and the Customer Service is noticed and appreciated, Great Job!

Good radio of you want to see a lot of text

Adam from Burlingame, CA on 12/5/2008

    2002 Toyota Tacoma
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Good product overall. Choice of display colors is cool. Menu structure is a bit clunky, but not bad. However, I bought the double-din expecting the large display to have more configuration options. There is a fairly good choice of display options, but nothing that is "wow". I feel like feature wise, it's basically the same as a $150 CD player except you get a big display. Unless you really have a need/want to see a lot of text on the display, it's probably not worth the extra money.

    Display Features

2-DIN Chassis: The DPX303 has a 2-DIN chassis (also known as "Double DIN" or size DD), and will fit in many vehicles with a large dash opening. The unit can be ISO-mounted using factory brackets, or Euro-mounted using the supplied mounting sleeve.

Note: As always, please consult the Crutchfield Car Selector to verify fit with your vehicle.

Multi-Line LCD Display: The Kenwood DPX303 features a large multi-line LCD full-dot display. The headunit's display offers the following features.

    • Display Type: Type A (text/icon display), Type B (text/icon/status display), Type C (text/source/clock display), Type D (spectrum analyzer display)
    • Illumination Effect: Sets whether the illumination color is changed in conjunction with the unit's key operation.
    • Illumination Music Sync: Sets whether the key illumination color is changed in conjunction with the unit's sound volume.
    • Display Illumination Control: When this function is active, the display turns off after 5 seconds if no operation is performed. This reduces the glare during night driving.
    • Contrast: The display's contrast can be adjusted between 1 and 10.
    • Dimmer: The dimmer function will dim this unit's display automatically when the vehicle light switch is turned On when you connect orange/white Illumination wire of this player.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: When the unit is in Standby mode, the face/button illumination is "keyed." In addition, while the unit is in Standby mode, you can turn the clock display on or off. When the Clock Display is turned on and the unit is in Standby mode, the Clock Display is also "keyed." Pressing and holding the source button turns the unit off completely.

Station/Disc Naming: The unit allows you to attach an 8-character title to a radio station or a CD. The unit can memorize up to 30 FM/AM station names and 10 CD names.

Text/Title Scroll: The DPX303 will display CD text, Audio file text, RDS information and Satellite and HD radio text. You can turn the scrolling feature "on" to scroll longer titles across the screen.

Security Code: You can enter a 4-digit security code which must be used when the unit is removed from the vehicle, or the constant power source is disconnected from the unit. When constant power is restored to the unit, the security code must be entered before the unit becomes operational. The security code may be disabled if desired.

    Audio Section

Supreme Setting: When MP3 or WMA files encoded at a low bit rate (less than 96 kbps, 44.1k, 48kHz) are played, the Supreme Setting function restores their high frequencies so the sound quality is closer to files encoded at a high bit rate. The processing is optimized for the compression format and the bit rate used. When the Supreme Setting is Off, the unit plays the original sound stored in the audio file.

Built-in Amp Switch: If the audio signals are output to external amplifiers, you can turn off the internal amplifier to improve audio quality.

Audio Setup: The DPX303 offers the following Audio Setup functions:

    • System Q: 7 EQ curves (Natural, Rock, Pops, Easy, Top 40, Jazz, Game) are preset into memory, allowing you to recall the best preset EQ curve for different types of music. Each preset has its own level settings for bass (100Hz), midrange (1kHz), and treble (10kHz). The headunit also has a User setting that can be set to your personal taste between -8 and +8 for bass, midrange and treble.
    • Speaker Settings: The Speaker Setting function tailors the System Q Sound Control settings according to the type of speakers in your vehicle. You may select a Speaker Setting of "SP Off" (flat), "SP OEM" (for OEM factory speaker systems), "SP 6x9/6" (for systems with 6" and 6"x9" speakers), or "SP 5/4" (for systems with 4" and 5" speakers).
    • Front and Rear High-Pass Filter: The DPX303 features an independent High-Pass Crossover for the front and rear channels (Hi-level/Low-level). You can adjust the high-pass crossover from Through, 40,60, 80, 100, 120, 150, 180 or 220Hz. The "Through" selection is a full-range setting. This feature is very helpful when you have smaller-type speakers in the front and larger-type speakers installed in the rear of the vehicle.

Source Tone Memory: This feature allows you to store System Q bass, middle and treble tone settings for each source (CD, FM, AM, Satellite, and CD changer).

Loudness: The Loudness feature compensates for low and high tones during low volume. You can turn this feature either on or off. Only the low tone is compensated for when the tuner is selected as a source.

Switchable Rear/Subwoofer Preouts: In addition to the front channel preamp outputs, you can switch the unit's rear RCA preamp outputs to a non-fading subwoofer output with independent volume control (-15 to +15), phase control (Normal/Reverse), and selectable crossover (50Hz, 60Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz or Through).

Volume Offset: The level of each source may be independently adjusted to prevent radical leaps in output volume when switching from one source to another. The available settings range from -8 to 0 for all sources other than the AUX input which you can set from -8 to +8.

Tel Mute: The DPX303 features a cell-phone mute wire (brown) in its harness that when hooked up to your car's phone system mute wire will automatically mute the receiver's audio signal when a call comes in.

Beep Tone: The CD player features a touch sensor tone that beeps when you have selected a function of the unit. You can turn the beep tone ON or Off.

    Radio Functions

CR-2 Advanced Tuner: This unit uses Kenwood's CR-2 Advanced tuner for clear radio reception. You can choose one of three tuning modes: Auto 1 (seek tuning), Auto 2 (cycles through and tunes the selected band's preset stations only with each button press), or Manual.

Clean Reception System Circuit (CRSC): This circuit controls multi-path distortion by reducing stereo separation. As stereo separation is reduced, multi-path has less effect on the radio signal, improving reception in areas with tall buildings and mountains. The CRSC circuit can be turned on or off.

Auto Memory Tuning: Not only does the CD receiver's tuner allow you manually enter your desired presets you can choose to have the unit automatically put stations with good reception in the memory banks automatically; this is a handy feature when traveling. The tuner features 3 FM banks (1, 2, 3) and 1 AM bank. You can store 6 presets for each AM/FM bank giving you a total of 18 FM presets and 6 AM presets.

Receive Mode: If you choose to connect the optional HD tuner, the Receive Mode allows you to choose to receive analog or digital AM/FM broadcasts. You can choose from the following.

    • Auto: analog and digital broadcast will be received with the digital broadcast having priority
    • Digital: receives digital broadcasts only
    • Analog: receives analog broadcasts only

Satellite Radio Ready: There are several options for connecting an optional XM or SIRIUS Satellite Radio tuner to this receiver:

    • XM Satellite Radio: To receive XM Satellite Radio connect the optional CNP2000UCA XM Tuner and the CNP-KEN1 Kenwood adapter cable (package item number700XMKEN2).

    Disc Playback

AAC/MP3/WMA Playback: The receiver can play AAC, MP3 and WMA files recorded on CD-ROM, CD-R, and CD-RW discs in ISO9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, and Romeo formats. The headunit supports MP3 audio files with transfer bit rates of 8-320 kbps, WMA audio files with transfer bit rates of 48-192 kbps, and AAC audio files with transfer bit rates of 8-320 kbps. Each disc should have a maximum of 8 directory levels, 50 folders, and 255 files per folder (512 maximum number of files and folders). The maximum number of characters for display is 30 characters for ID3 Tag, WMA Tag, and AAC song information. A maximum of 64 characters can be displayed for File/Folder name.

    Aux/iPod Connection

AUX Input: The DPX303 is equipped with a front panel 3.5mm mini-jack auxiliary input for connecting external portable audio devices such as an MP3 player or Tape walkman. The DPX303 allows you to select the source type displayed when using the auxiliary input. You can choose from AUX, DVD, Portable, Game, Video or TV.
