Form, function, fun

If you're considering ditching your factory stereo for something that'll add a little life your ride, Kenwood's DPX500BT CD receiver ought to be high on your list. This great-looking double-DIN receiver features a big single-line display, Bluetooth functionality, an array of tools for sonic adjustments, and some very cool entertainment options.

Bluetooth made easy

This receiver's built-in Bluetooth eliminates all the headaches. Kenwood's Simple Secure Pairing system automatically detects and pairs phones in close proximity to the receiver — no dealing with searches, PIN codes, or other hassles. Your phonebook transfers quickly to the receiver, so it's easy to make outgoing calls — you can even use voice dialing with compatible phones. And the DPX500BT will even inform you when you receive a text message on your phone.

When paired with an iPhone 4s or iPhone 5, you can engage Siri through Kenwood's Siri Digital Assistant Control. Just press a button to talk to Siri through the included Bluetooth microphone, and you'll hear her answers through your car's speakers.

Bring your smartphone

When it comes to music on your phone, this Kenwood covers a lot of bases. Of course, you can stream music wirelessly from just about any phone. But this receiver also provides easy access to and control over these apps:

  • PANDORA: You can check out PANDORA Internet radio when your iPhone's connected to the USB port, or through the Bluetooth connection with your Android or Blackberry phone.
  • Aha Radio: You can control Aha Radio with your iPhone (wired connection) or Android phone (Bluetooth connection).
  • iHeartRadio: Listen to more than 1,500 radio stations all across the USA with your iPhone or Android phone.

Get the beat however you like it

This Kenwood's got you covered, whether you're listening to CDs, streaming audio through Bluetooth, or checking out the music on your iPod. And you can easily expand your entertainment options by adding SiriusXM's add-on tuner, and getting into the amazing variety of programs and personalities offered by satellite radio.

The sound's the thing

This receiver's built-in amp will rejuvenate your car's sound system. You'll find preset tone curves for quick adjustments, plus bass, treble, and midrange controls for hands-on customization. Special controls let you tailor the sound to match your car's cabin, speaker setup, and your favorite listening position. And you have a full complement of preamp outputs for adding amplifiers and subs.

Attention, Toyota owners

Kenwood includes a set of Toyota trim pieces that'll make this receiver look great in your dash.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?

In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Kenwood stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Kenwood, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

    2006 Ford Explorer
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this unit to replace my factory stereo in my 2006 Explorer and I am very happy with the look and sound. It can be a little confusing to operate on the unit itself but it does work with my steering wheel controls with some soldering. I like the BT feature. It will automatically synk to my IPhone when I get in the vehicle. I can also set the illumination to match my other gages. 10 months now and I couldn't have made a better choice. The Crutchfield service techs helped a lot and were very knowledgable about every aspect of the install.

Pros: Looks good, blue tooth, iPhone compatible, good value, steering wheel compatible

Cons: Difficult to use some features

    2011 Nissan Sentra
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Wasn't very easy to install in my 2011 Nissan Sentra. My vehicle required disassembly of a lot of stuff in the center console area-- including of part of the gear shift assembly, which initially made me a little nervous. I had to Google for install specifics that the master sheet included way too vaguely. (I totally could've called Crutchfield for support-- they are amazing with this.) If it wasn't such a total pain to disassemble, I'd definitely return this head unit and exchange it for a different manufacturer altogether. Radio reception is really patchy, which could be an installer error, haven't had time to investigate. Kinda bummed. My disappointment is definitely not due to anything on Crutchfield's end-- definitely buy from them but you may want to choose a different brand.

Pros: Clean design, front access aux and USB, remote control. Integrated Pandora works very well.

Cons: Didn't improve the sound quality of my factory speakers at all, even after tweaking. Nearly IMPOSSIBLE to see display during the day-- a major design flaw, IMO. Also, the rear speakers are default off when streaming music via Bluetooth. You can manually turn them back on, which I did, but doing so sends all audio from phone calls to the rear instead of keeping it to the front, making it difficult to hear your callers. Didn't have this issue with my previous Sony replacement unit in my Jeep.

Nice radio easy to install. My installation in a 2002 f250 was a little more involved with trimming dash for it to fit. My second kenwood radio and I'm very happy with it. Crutchfield has great prices and includes the right wiring the first time. For what I wanted this radio is perfect.

Excellent buy for the money. I researched for weeks before making a purchase, Crutchfield had everyone else beat hands down. The unit was easy to install, had to call tech support only once (forgot to purchase the Sirius Radio module). Looks really neat at night with the light show!

Pros: Much more powerful than the factory unit, my speakers are getting a serious workout. Bluetooth was up and running within seconds.

Cons: Everyone is complaining about the sunlight glare during the day. It's true but it's more of a nuisance than an actual problem. Tint your widows, set the cruise control, and enjoy the ride!

This is a great upgrade to get extra features that the factory radio didn't have. I was specifically looking for bluetooth playback of music and this one works great. As always, the Crutchfield team makes sure that you have everything you need to complete the install the first time. This "extra" attention to detail keeps me coming back.

Pros: A good unit at a good price, if you're looking for the features that this one has then this should be on your list.

Cons: The rear speakers are defaulted to "off" when connected to bluetooth. You have to go into the settings and enable them.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this Kenwood unit to go in a Mustang with the Shaker 1000 system. The car came from the factory with an amp and subs but the sound was mediocre at best. The radio was going to be my starting point at upgrading the whole system. It needs nothing else. The Kenwood brought the whole system to life. You can find this radio cheaper but Crutchfield supplies everything you need which makes up for the difference.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After four replacement radios for my FJ Cruiser because they kept eating CD's; decided to get a new radio as the warranty ran out. With 120K miles on the truck, I didn't want to spend a lot on a replacement and this was priced right. Mainly use the radio to listen to books. Installation was really easy and three calls to Crutchfield just to make sure I was doing everything correctly. They addressed each concern immediately and with accurate responses. Installation was easier than what I expected and the fit was spot on. Still learning how to use all of the features as there are many; the blue tooth connects quickly and the phone functions real well including using the phone book. calls are clear and no one has complained about not understanding what I am saying. biggest issue is that I cannot decide what color led to use, so I just let it scroll through them all. highly recommend, especially for the price.

    Pretty Painless

    2006 Ford Mustang
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I did a fair amount of research on the front end before the purchase. I haven't installed a head unit in about 30 years. That said, when the day came, despite making a mistake or two, I had it installed in a little more than an hour. Some of my issues were my fault, some the documentation could have be a little clearer. I made a couple of calls on that Saturday morning to Crutchfield's support team and got very quick and courteous answers. I was very pleased with the support. As I said, I did some research ahead of time so I know the pros and cons going in. The biggest down side for me is I use Pandora a lot but I don't like the sync cable hanging off the headunit. To natively listen and control The streaming services on an iPhone, have have to use the sync cable. You can still stream Bluetooth using the BT source selection, you just can't select Pandora as a source without the cable. I have a Mustang convertible so in the bright sun, the display is difficult to see but again, I knew that going in. The BT phone connection works very well. I'm still optimizing a bit but I'm told I can be understood pretty good and the mic is down on the console right now. It take a little less than a minute to connect the phone BT on start up. Longer than my Ford Sync system but not too bad. Menu system is pretty easy to navigate but not something you want to do while driving. Sound quality is good with minimal optimizing. This unit was everything I expected.

Pros: nice install support from Crutchfield I like the ability to chance the colors to match the dash nice sound great value for what you get. good online documentation from Kenwood good install documentation from Crutchfield. Mounting kit makes it look good in the dash..

Cons: need to use sync cable for Pandora from iPhone difficult to read in bright sun

Cons: Sometimes Bluetooth takes some time to connect

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This receiver is one of the best I've owned. I am an avid kenwood cystomer because of the quality of their products. Every after m arket car e adio purchase i have made after i started doing more research has been a Kenwood. The dpx500bt is just as good as the reviews said. Some say you cant read the display when its bright outside, if you adjust the color on the unit you can view it fine. The bluetooth works great, could be easier to use the phone book in the unit itself but works just as well from the phone. the Bluetooth streaming and USB all work perfect I would recommend this unit to anyone looking for a double din receiver for their vehicle.

    Pros: looks cool

Cons: no bass with blue tooth, cant see very well in day light.

    Too Glossy

    2014 Volkswagen Jetta
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

You do get what you pay for here. Performance wise I am sure this is a great product. However, functionally it fails which is why I ultimately returned it. *note for VW Owners* I have a 2014 Jetta TDi. Ultimately what I was trying to achieve by purchasing this was increased wattage with out an amp and that is what I got. However, I lost much more function than what I gained. - The VW Bluetooth module is not built into the OEM headunit so your phone will still try and connect to the VW Phone even after installing a new head unit. This becomes really annoying as your phone will continue trying to connect to VW Phone even after you unpair/forget it. - You will also have to install an external mic which is ascetically tacky and running the wire is a pain. -The screen on this unit was very glossy and given the angle that it sits in the car, I could not read the display during daylight hours.

    Pros: Sound quality

Cons: Glossy surface makes it difficulty to impossible to see the display Rotating color display is annoying External Mic needed

    2009 Mazda 6
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bluetooth doesn't always work. If I've been away from the car for less than hour, it works great. Longer time away and the display shows that the unit is paired, the BT AUDIO appears in the display, then the display will show the track that was on when I turned it off, but it won't play it. I have to unlock the phone, open the music app and press play. Other than that minor issue, this unit has been great. I can't recommend the online instruction manual enough; this unit is way too complicated to figure out on your own! The variable color display options allowed me to make the unit look like it came with the car. The construction of the Scosche MA1544B Dash Kit was pretty flimsy, but it did the job. The SWC interface works flawlessly and was simple to set up. In all, a very good unit.

Pros: Custom colors for display and controls make the unit appear stock

Cons: Complicated until you have everything set up.

    2006 Nissan 350Z
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Kenwood head unit was exactly what I was looking for. The install was a little complicated but nothing that couldn't be done in regards to my car, the 350z. When I purchased it from Crutchfield, it came with everything I needed to replace my stock head unit. Once installed, I ran into some minor issue where when playing music through bluetooth, the sound would only come out of the front speakers. But I called Crutchfield and there's a setting on many Kenwoods that is easily changed. Customer/technical support is awesome. All in all would highly recommend product and buying it from Crutchfield.

Pros: -Customizable -Easy to use -Bluetooth able (i.e. Phone calls, music, etc.) -Aux port -USB port

Cons: -Headunit install requires some work -External mic (if you're not into that)

    AaronF from Arizona on 1/23/2015

Incredible sound. Put in my 02 Ranger regular cab with stock speakers and it made it sound like a whole new world. Love that I can run BT through my phone and play Pandora or iHeartRadio, (The Pandora integration is much better) Added some Infinity 6x8's after I finally blew the stock speakers from plainly just playing them too dang loud. Being able to use my phone through the radio is great. My wife told me I was more clear than if I had just been talking on the phone like usual. Don't know how that is possible but its what she said. Auto downloads your address book into the headunit so you have caller ID and everything. I don't understand those that say that this headunit is a little confusing to start out with. I thought everything was incredibly straight forward. The only thing for me that would make this better is that if it was a touch screen. Also there were some that said glare during the day made the display hard to see. Maybe it depends on the vehicle, but in my Ranger it hasn't been a problem. (I did a bit of a custom install in that I angled the headunit toward the driver side in order for easier view though.) I have always loved Kenwood and they definitely didn't let me down.

Pros: Great Sound Bluetooth works great Pretty easy to use Looks great in my truck

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought and installed 2 of these, 1 each for my wife and daughter. They love them. They sync up with the iphones automatically, so they have their music and hands free while driving. Kenwood head units always have lots of bells and whistles, and these don't disappoint. They do everything! With Crutchfields install kits the jobs were super easy and look professional. The display and buttons have various colors to match any dash, but both my people like the colors to alternate. Sound quality was greatly improved over factory head units. And I was able to almost easily retain steering wheel control button functions. Overall, well worth the expenditures and effort.

Pros: Sounds great and install was EASY. Looks really good

Cons: Installing steering wheel control converter was a little more of a test, but phone support got me through.

Installed this in my 2000 4runner nearly 2 years ago.Unit would occasionally lock up and not operate when restarting the vehicle..Then over the last few months it became a weekly occurrence.I had to keep a toothpick handy to hit the reset button to get it to fire back up, with the accompanying loss of my presets... Go to the Kenwood site and make sure you have the latest firmware for your unit. I didn't,.installed updated firmware and it seems to have solved the problem. The last firmware specifically addresses the problem I stated above.other than above,..Install was simple,.sound is an upgrade from previous Pioneer unit.Pairing with iPhone is straight forward. I would guess that recent purchases already had this update loaded from the factory..

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was very easy to install in my 2003 Avalanche. The install sheets were helpful but not necessary. I found an ample number of how-to videos on You Tube (for removing door panels, for example). The receiver sounds and looks great in the dash; no additional trim work necessary. I bought this primarily for the Bluetooth, that works great with four phones.

Pros: Price, quality, ease of installation

Cons: Don't have any so far (two weeks into use)

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was a little concerned about installing this in my wife's 2004 CRV, but having made the purchase throug Crutchfield I was a more at ease because of the added value of the correct wiring harness adapter, instructions, after market trim accessories and support from Crutchfield's friendly support staff if needed. (I didn't) The only extra purchase that was required was butt connectors to splice the reciever harness to the after market plug that fit my Honda. If they had been included with all the other extras, it would have saved me a trip to the local auto parts store and for a couple bucks it would have made for a complete install. The pins on the after market adapter plug are very flimsy and you have to be careful not to bend them when making the connection. This reciever has loads of features and looks great in place of the factory radio. The bluetooth paired effortlessly with my Android phone and instantly downloaded the address book. The sound quality and ease of use of the hands free bluetooth is exceptional as is the improved sound from the receiver. Having only used it for one day and lots of new stuff to discover, like the ability to update the firmware, apps from the Kenwood web site, the ease of using the features and the configureability of this product makes me think it's a great buy.

Pros: Easy to install, ease of use, included features, great sound quality, clear voice quality of hands free bluetooth.

Cons: I wish Crutchfield would include butt splices with each order to help facilitate the install.

Sound quality is outstanding. The extra little EQ options are great for an audio buff. Gave it 3 stars due to screen lighting and ease of setup. Cannot read display in sunlight no matter what color I chose, would send back on that alone but too much trouble. Lousy radio reception. My old factory one was crystal clear. Came without user manual but did download it online.

Pros: A lot of EQ options. Super audio power.

Cons: Display hard to read in daylight.

Well,in the video the reviewer made a mistake saying that the display doesn't offer a great array of color options,on the contrary this unit have separated color controls for the switches and display making it adaptable to most dash combinations,i installed the unit in a restored 1986 Corvette, had to use a double DIN custom adapter and the dash in this car is totally digital being the cluster a combination of an specific tone of green and the rest of the illumination white, this radio allowed me not only to put the switches illumination to white matching the rest of the dash as well as allowing me to find the exact tone of green for the display therefore matching the digital speedometer and the a/c display, looks completely factory. Also as a highlight I have to point out the built-in SQ equalizer that mimics perfectly the Quadraphonic effect,of course you have to mate the radio for high end speakers,i.e. expensive. The worst flaw of this unit may be,if there's one,the fact that the manual don't really get in technical detail explaining the many resources offered, but thanks to the Internet you can get everything online, thus being able to exploit the extraordinary resources this unit offers,i always deemed Kenwood as stereo royalty and this specific model lives up to the reputation.

    Pros: Versatility,sound quality,resources.

    Cons: None at all.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very good receiver, If I was younger and wanted to listen to music louder than I do, I would probably get better speakers etc. At my age the OEM speakers work just fine. The sound is much improved over the OEM receiver. Installed in a Toyota Tundra 2003. The trim plate provided with the receiver for Toyota installation provides OEM installation look. Does not look as an add on. Reason for change was I wanted Bluetooth, iPod and Flash drive capabilities.

Pros: Easy to install, Good sound, Good look yet does not look so fancy when it turned off that it should not attract thieves, Seems to have more capabilities than I need at this point.

Cons: The only con it can be a bit hard to see. On a bright sunny Calif. day with sun glasses on. Depending on how the sun is shining in the windows, most off the time its not a problem. PS speaking with other people that have installed other brands and units they pretty much say the same thing.

Seems to be a great device. With the dash kit, steering wheel control adapter, and harness adapter it installed easily and works just like it should. A far cry from the Craig PowerPlay 8-track in my Plymouth which was my first install about 38 yrs ago - both in the quality of the device AND in the ease of installation. I put this in the Sonata my daughter has at college and she loves it. BT music, hands-free phone. The 5-stars are her rating. She looked up the user's manual on the web and had it set up quickly. The paper quick-start guide which comes in the box doesn't cover much, but it's just a quick-start guide, so the online manual is important.

Pros: Lots of functionality. Works well.

Cons: It would be nice to get a paper copy of the manual. Maybe I'm just old.

It's a very nice radio. I am enjoying using it! I love the display! It's pretty easy to navigate through its settings. I do wish that it was a little brighter, though. Sometimes in the sun, when I have it cycling through its colors, it is difficult to see the display. Not a major problem. Sometimes bluetooth streaming music playing with my Galaxy S3 cuts out (for a split second) - I use the PowerAmp Music Player App on my phone. When I installed this radio in my 2002 Chevy Cavalier Coupe, without monsoon sound system, I did have a lot of trouble. Crutchfield told me that it "Fits." It did fit, with modifications. I had to cut out, with a saw blade, the plastic back of my vehicle's dash of where the radio is installed. I did this to allow room for the wiring that stuck out from the radio, it could not have fit without cutting that plastic out. I also soldered all my wiring connections to the Metra LC-GMRC-01 Wiring interface to retain the factory warning chimes. Overall, it is a great quality radio and I really like it!

Pros: Sounds Great with my Ipod, Bluetooth and Mic included is awesome!

Cons: Installation was a pain. Sound cuts out sometimes while streaming bluetooth audio from my phone. Wish display was a little brighter.

Sound is great, BT (bluetooth) works great, pairs/connects very quickly. The range of display colors to choose from was great and I was able to match my dash lights very closely. Additionally, an external mic was inclided and easily intalled for HF (hands free) calling with BT. This is the second time I purchased this unit, the first was installed in a Subaru Legacy GT sedan.

    2008 Nissan 350Z
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The reviews I read here before purchasing were spot on: the printed "operating instructions" might as well be non-existent/written in Russian, and the display can be difficult to discern. The darkest shade of green does provide sufficient lighting during the day. . . . as long as you remove your sunglasses. If you have some time to burn for self-tutorials, navigating through the intricacies becomes second nature. This was a replacement for the OEM unit, Bose garbage. The 6-disc Bose CD player started having issues after less than 3 years (it died earlier this year), and although under warranty, the dealership (Don Williamson Nissan of Jacksonville, NC and subsequently the Nissan Corporation) refused to replace it. Therefore, after driving without MY choice of music for an extended period, this Kenwood is awesome. Since I'm not a true audiophile, this unit is probably old news to the "coolest" people, but it has more capabilities than I currently need, and I like it . . . . a lot. It is NOT easy to install in a 350-Z (and Crutchfield's instructions left QUITE a bit to be desired). For those of you who are not professional installers and claim to have installed this unit (or ANY, for that matter) in 30 minutes . . . . uhhhhh, rrrright. The bottom line is: it's early in the "newness" stage and I LOVE this unit, and its durability obviously cannot be measured, but I think most will be pleased with the "bang for the buck".

    Cons: Display lighting, instructions

The 3 star ease of use is only because there are so many features (a good thing) that it takes some time to figure out how to use them all. Would definitely recommend this unit.

Pros: Price, looks, sound quality, Bluetooth.

Cons: It makes you want to add better speakers and amps !

Geez, where do you start when you're totally happy with everything? The Kenwood unit is great! I love the options that are built into it, and the excellence of the sound that comes out of it. It has the power to push out pure sound to the speakers, letting me enjoy every note that comes out. The Bluetooth option for my phone is top notch. No longer do I have to dig in my pocket fr my cell phone when a call comes in, just push the button and answer hands free. Would I do it again? Absolutely! I made a 3 hour drive to get this unit, and get it installed by Crutchfield, it was worth every mile driven!

Pros: Sound, unit quality, unit options, ease of use, and PRICE!

Cons: The cons would be the comments from my jealous friends, I'm sorry your car/truck doesn't have something this nice.

Back in the 90's I competed professionally in the Car Audio circuit (IASCA and USAC). So I have done my fair share of car stereos - selection, installs, tweeking. I'm dating myself here - but they don't make them like they used to. This is a good unit for its class. When you look at all the others in this class they all say the same thing: Can't see the display in direct sun (true). But all the radios now a days have that problem (for this class). Buttons too small (that's why I opted for this double din version to have big enough buttons). Buttons are plastic hinged on one side - basically plastic tabs you are pushing on. I would gather they will break off eventually and might not last the 14 years that my clarion did. To be fair, clarion has the same kind of buttons now a days. So I can't really dedcut points there as well. But overall, I am very happy with this unit. The features for its class are awesome and plentiful for a vetren geek like me. Been buying Crutchfiled since the 80's - still love the free shipping, wiring harness and dash mount kits included for free.

I installed the Kenwood DPX500BT unit in my 1999 Toyota Solara. Instructions provided by Crutchfield were extremely helpful however I had to call Crutchfield support regarding two (2) wiring harness issues. Crutchfield rep. told me I needed to connect the orange/white wires from both harnesess together in order for the unit to dim when the headlights come on. Also, he suggested that I connect the blue wire from the Metra harness to the blue/white wire from the receiver harness to enhance AM reception via the embedded radio antenna in the rear window. Actual installation went smoothly. This is a great unit. Like other reviewers the only negative comment I have is that the display is very difficult to see in direct sunlight. I have tried various color schemes and they are all about the same as far as visibility in direct sunlight. Overall I highly recommend this unit.

Pros: Unit arrived 1 day ahead of scheduled delivery date. Looks great in my old car.

    Cons: Visibility of display.

Needed a radio for my Lexus GS300, did loads and loads of research. Wanted Time after time I was led back to this model. It had all the features I needed and was very reasonably priced. Bluetooth hands free phone works and sounds great. The muli-light display is very cool, looks great at night. It is a little challenginh in bright sunlight (as some of the other reviewers have noted. But thatis the only semi-negative factor and does not affect my opinion that this is a great option. More importantly the Crutchfield team is top notch. I spoke with and conversed in their chat room multiple times and each person was friendly knowledgeable, and professional. My only frustration is only one rep would get credit for the sale.

Pros: Just an all around great unit, looks and sounds great. I can listen to SiriusXM, Pandora, IHeartRadio, my stored music on my Samsung (Android) wit the USB(front). Hand free bluetooth works great for taking a call while driving. Great Value fro around $200

Cons: The display is a little hard to read in bright sun light but not a reason not to buy...

A very nice Kenwood head unit. They covered all the musical format bases. The sound quality via the existing JBL amp is outstanding. I had no idea my factory speakers sounded so great. The button funtions are a bit dicey and the settings appications take some time to navigate to. Took a little time to wire all together, given I needed to keep my steering wheel controls, keep the factory amp and install a SiriusXM tuner. The mulit funtioncolor display covered any and all color options i needed. All in all one great unit.

I have had this unit installed for about a week now. I'm really enjoying having bluetooth in my 2001 Forester now and not using tape adapters and all that crap. The sound does seem better than the stock unit that I had with some more options available for tuning the sound a bit. The install was simple enough but I did have problems with the face plate/surround. It did not fit into the stock location out of the box. I had to dremel off the sides of the interior of the face plate. I know that might not make sense, I'm not sure how to explain it. Short story is that it doesn't fit out of the box into a 2001 Forester like I thought it would but just required a little work. Once it was done it looks great. I'm happy with it.

WOW.....I can't believe how nice this receiver is for only spending $200. The big reason for replacing the factory head unit was to gain Bluetooth. It was very easy to pair my phone and within minutes I was making calls and streaming music. I also purchased replacement speakers but I haven't installed them because the system sounds so much better than the factory unit, I'm not sure I need to. The installation was easy but I will say that the instructions need to be updated for my vehicle because one of the three factory harnesses isn't used but the instructions make no mention of it. I called the tech line and got my answer but it would have been nice to have the information.

Put this in my '05 Mustang GT. The most time-consuming part was splicing the wires together. I wanted to make sure they were connected properly the first time. Only had a little trouble with the 12amp-to-5amp reducer, but Crutchfield sent me a diagram that was more updated than what was supplied with the manufacturer. I haven't done an aftermarket unit in awhile due to the quality of factory radios these days, but I wanted blue tooth for my phone apps and hands-free phone operation. I couldn't believe all the features I got for the money and how the unit fit in the space where my old Shaker 1000 radio used to be. You can even pick a color to match the dash lights of your vehicle. Great sound and easy to program if you have any kind of experience with modern devices and how to navigate them. I had Kenwood products when I was younger and am glad to see the quality is still there. You can't beat this device for the money and ease of installation thanks to Crutchfield supplying all the necessary accessories that were included with the price of purchase. Don't think twice. Just buy this receiver.

Pros: Great sound quality and blue tooth capability. Easy to wire up and program.

First and most important, the pre-amps in this unit improve the quality of sound over my stock unit significantly. Hard install was easy, Crutchfield makes it so simple. Bluetooth paired instantly with my phone, not much to mess around with there. I found the functions and controls easy to navigate through, and while I did watch an online review complaining about the EQ adjustments (wasn't visual), any audio nerds out there will love the ability to precisely cut and boost frequency bands to suit your car and speakers. When testing the BT call audio and mic, a few adjustments needed to be made - initially we had coiled the mic cable in the dash which caused too much interference, so the mic didn't work. After un-coiling the cable, the mic worked fine. I spent an hour in the car on a call to see how the bluetooth and mic audio functioned - worked great and no issues. I loaded up a 32 gig USB stick with most of my music library, and was pleased at how quickly the unit read the files. Even with a loaded 32 gig USB, navigating through songs was quick and straightforward. Head unit isn't super bright like most on here have commented, but it's no different than my stock unit and I still have no problem actually reading the info displayed. I'm happy with the value of this unit and also Crutchfield, who, like most users on here have said, are awesome and helpful. I'm glad I bought from them.

All-around good unit for the money. Unit works great, nearly perfect feature set, simple installation with the optional connection kit and free (from Crutchfield) mounting kit & antenna adapter. The only feature it lacks is HD radio (hybrid digital). There is not even an optional module for it. Instruction manual definitely doesn't measure up. See my 'Cons'. Good sound with internal amp, has preamp outputs too.

Pros: XM compatibility with the optional receiver is awesome. Bluetooth calling and MP3 playback work perfectly. USB thumb-drive MP3 playback is. The Bluetooth microphone works great. It has a 24-color display so it can be set to match the rest of your dash. Nice that it also has preamp output so a better amp can be added now or later.

Cons: Instruction manual is incomplete by at least one factor: while it has 24-colors settable for the display and/or buttons, nowhere in the instructions does it mention how to set a single colors for them. The unit arrives with the default 'rotating colors', which is absolutely terrible in daylight. I had to rely on Google to find my way to the menu to pick single colors. Who knows what other features it doesn't mention? Plays all modern formats, except HD radio - why leave it out?

Phil from North Central, ARkansas on 8/5/2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Crutchfield, thank you for such a good product at a reasonable price far a radio and speakers. I have a 2006 Mustang GT and I needed to replace my factory radio. The Ford dealer gave me a price which was quit-a-bit higher than your radio. So I decided that I would replace my radio and speakers. Your price was still less. In June of 2014 I bought your "Kenwood DPX500BT" and "Pioneer TS-D6802R", and "Pioneer TS-A6885R" Speakers. Before I place my order I called in to your technicians for advice on my set up. I was going to get all 4 Pioneer TS-D6802R for my car, and that is when the technician advised me that those speakers would not fit in the front, but ok for the back. With that in mind he and I came to the decision of the Pioneer TS-A6885R speakers for the front door. WOW they are great. In the reviews that I read when I was narrowing down my speakers, there were comments that the speakers were a little weak on BASS. Let me tell you with my setup they are great, and have plenty of bass, enough to rattle my windows at ½ volume. Treble is great too. I just wanted to say that my combination is a great setup for me and my car. I will say that my Mustang was a little more difficult to install than I expected. Ford does not make it easy to take out and reinstall the speakers; I had to take apart just about the entire inside to install them.

Pros: Great Radio, Great Bluetooth, and Great Satellite radio. This Kenwood is a great radio. The installation of the Radio was just as the Instructions showed. The adapter for the connection of the car connection to the Kenwood Radio was easy and great. This Radio is so much better than my Factory Ford Radio

Cons: The print on the instructions of how to to operate the radio is too small

This Kenwood radio has been great. Very pleased with the ease of use to set up the radio. Bluetooth set up was seamless for both phone and audio. Just a great radio! Looks great in the car as well. I picked this radio over others with the help of one of the advisors. Great tech help as well as had some questions with connecting the wires. Overall very easy to install.

Pros: Very nice display. Not to busy as some displays can be.

The receiver has many features that are desirable. Changing between modes can be awkward while driving.

Pros: Looks and fits dacor of the vehicle. Installation was easy for an amateur.

Cons: Radio shuts off and restarts on its own randomly. I have re-installed twice to check power connections and plugs. When radio reboots it seamlessly returns to prior play, clock settings etc.

Well there are 2 issues I have with this deck. 1. It's nice that there are many features available to control, but who really needs them? 2. Although the control knob looks great , I wish it had more texture on it so when I'm driving I can easily spin it without my finger slipping. Aloha, Shane

Pros: Great deck, lots of features.

    Cons: Slippery control knob.

Just as described. Came out of the box and with the "recommended" add on items, Adapter Faceplate, Antenna Adapter, Wire Harness adapter, it was an easy install. BUT I did not talk with a Tech Adviser so when it came time to power it up, so I did not have the Sat Tuner. Yeah, Sat ready does not mean it will work with the factory Sat Receiver in your car . The system prompted me to the recommended accessories, but failed on the Sat Tuner even when it was part of the search options listed.

Pros: The recommended install kit and wire harness where far easier to work with than the stuff that came with the head unit. Every thing just fit right the first time.

Cons: Missing information about SWC module and what to do with it if you do NOT have SWC .

Great radio for the price. I wanted it for Bluetooth purposes and since it had a USB and Aux inputs. Bluetooth audio for music is not as great of quality as opposed to plugging it in using USB, but I would expect that with most things. I'm still working on getting the Bluetooth audio for phone conversations to work, for some reason I'm having a problem with it. Crutchfield support is great and they will help you with anything.

Pros: Looks nice, change the color of the display, USB, Bluetooth, AUX, CD, etc. Fits well in my Chrysler 300C.

I really love this stereo-has everything that I was looking for: siriusxm, bluetooth, pandora, etc. I like being able to charge my phone with the USB port. Only downside: the display virtually disappears in sunlight and when wearing sunglasses (this seems to happen with many stereos; I bought my daughter a Sony, and it was also hard to see in sunlight. However, there was a way to make the display much brighter and after adjusting it she can see it at all times. I wish that my Kenwood had that option.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Read several reviews and decided on the Kenwood DPX500BT primarily because it didn't have all the colors and lights that most other radios have, which is too over the top for me. Although it was more expensive, it has Bluetooth and is capable of having satellite radio with an adapter for about $50. It has dedicated subwoofer preamps which I like in case I want to use all 4 speakers plus a subwoofer with amp. The display is hard to read in sunlight, but from the reviews I've read they all are. I didn't really think I'd use the Bluetooth for hands free calling but it's a cool feature. If your phone has bluetooth turned on, the radio will link up with it as soon as you get in the vehicle. If you receive a call, the music stops playing and the rings through the speakers and you can answer it just by pushing the "phone" button on the head unit or remote. The display text is large for easy reading. It has 1.5 lines of text which means the clock is on the bottom line and the top line is dedicated to station info and song titles. The display text can be a different color from the buttons if you choose to. I really like the head unit as I felt all the colors were a distraction and would get annoying after a while.

Pros: Display is classy and not over the top with flashing lights and colors. Bluetooth Satellite Radio capability Four channel preamp outs plus subwoofer preamp

Cons: More expensive than other units

My initial thoughts of the product were mixed until I downloaded and read the 128 page operators manual (not included but recommended). Crutchfield included everything needed to install in a 2009 VW Jetta Tdi. I wanted a head unit that was Bluetooth capable and had USB / AUX inputs. This unit fits my needs perfectly. Some reviewers mention that the display is too bright but this can be fixed with just a few clicks of the display button. The color selection is a very cool feature too. This allows the user to match the display on the radio with the other interior lighting. Oh, the sound quality is amazing too!! Good job Kenwood / Crutchfield.

I just received my head unit today and made an attempt to put it in my 2008 GMC Canyon extended cab. Delivery time was excellent. Less than 24 hours from start to finish. Before I purchased this head unit I read at least 50 reviews and not everyone is wrong about being hard to see the display. It definitely needs a makeover when it comes to the brightness of the display. But other than that I had to make one phone call to Crutchfield's service center for some help. An outstanding employee name ( Robert ) help me through the process and did a great job. I have bought many radios from Crutchfield and other accessories over the years and I am fully satisfied with this company.

Pros: Seems to work like it said it should. Sony/Kenwood make some good units I'm very satisfied with the one I bought. Bluetooth works wonderful!!! Has enough power and amps but I need to buy better speakers.

Cons: Definitely needs some attention on the brightness of the display. In the bright sun it's hard to see. Future customers beware it is truly hard to see in the daylight.

Very good stereo for the money with lots of features. Only ding is what others have mentioned about hard to see the display in direct sunlight. In our 2003 Toyota Highlander, I did notice that if I turned off the headlights (they go off automatically when the engine is turned off so usually we just leave them on) the display was brighter. But still would be nice for more light. Otherwise no complaints...very easy to install and looks great.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall great stereo, only comment is just as some others have stated about it being very difficult to see during the day time. The lights are simply not bright enough to allow a sufficient contrast in order to see which mode/station you are on. My dash, '04 4runner, has a very slight angle and the main times I drive I have the sun at my back, all of which add up to a display which is very difficult to read. If it weren't for this, the ease of use would easily get 5 stars, the controls are very intuitive, which makes this flaw bearable, but a flaw none the less. Consider the angle the radio sits in your dash and the sun glare before you buy this, along with how much you flip and fiddle with your radio while driving, because otherwise this an awesome radio and I am very happy with it, at night.

Pros: Everything except visibility, Bluetooth connected easily, pandora works great, music sounds great.

Cons: Visibility during the day time - especially a morning and evening commute.

Love my new car stereo! Husband bought for my birthday because I have an older car, a 2004! So you know it's just a straight up car stereo with tape deck and cd player (cd player didn't work anymore, ugh!) Now I can play about anything in my car! The lights on it are so cool! I had a problem after pairing my phone with it and it kept turning it off and on like the BT was disconnecting so I removed that! Not sure what the deal is there but it's not a deal breaker for me. I was driving home last night and thinking that I would love to be able to just take it right into my house and use it, I love it so much!

Pros: You can connect any BT music source, the auto volume reducer(ATT), light display.

Cons: Trying to figure out how and what color to make it. It has numbers and not words so I was clueless on what color I was picking until I was done. Also, it is hard to see in the daytime, especially with sunglasses on!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this unit in Toyota minivan. The install was difficult because of the steering wheel adapter and the TATO unit, but Crutchfield service saved the day with a simple phone call. Once installed the unit was a little difficult to set up. The options are not intuitive and there are not descriptions in the instruction manual. Like other reviewers, we have found the display to be too dim. I've experimented with many combinations and found one that works, but the display is still hard to read. The main reason I chose this unit was for the Bluetooth functionality. We wanted it to work with at least 2 phones (Apple) and we wanted it to be compatible with the existing steering wheel controls. This all worked out of the box, but the signal while using BT would cut out every 30 seconds or so. I called Crutchfield for help troubleshooting and the tech said it was a problem w/ Apple BT and I need to use i-devices plugged in. I didn't understand this as I have a Pioneer unit in my other car that works great w/ iPhone. I re-paired the phones, changed a setting in the stereo BT settings to "all" (per Crutchfield's advice) and changed the email settings on the phones to fetch messages on every 30-60 minutes. Problem solved, but using BT functions on the stereo are not intuitive and are still hard to sort out when switching between devices. I would get the Pioneer unit if I were to do it over again.

Pros: Blue tooth, display layout, front USB, Toyota compatibility

Cons: Display too dim, difficult to set up options, difficult to navigate between BT devices, particularly long delay when BT starts (longer than other stereos with similar functionality).

I have a newer car but it only had an AUX in for the stock radio. That meant that I had to plug and unplug my phone into the car every time I got in or out. I put up with this for years thinking, "it's too much work or too difficult to change out the stock stereo myself in this 2010 Toyota RAV4." Boy was I wrong. I heard about Crutchfield;s and their instruction/installation kits and was sold. I got one and this thing is F**king AWESOME! The kit makes it fit perfectly where the stock stereo was and the Kenwood radio had so many color options I was actually able to program it to look exactly like the stock colors. If it didn't look so new and flashy nobody would know it didn't come with the car from the factory. With the build-in bluetooth all I have to do now is start the car and BOOM my music comes on from my phone, or calls. I can't believe I didn't do this years ago I am such an idiot but we all learn. As for the sound, well there are a ton of EQ choices depending on what type of music you like and even with the stock speakers they all sound much better than the original radio did. I am very happy with the service, products, and installation material I got from Crutchfield's and will definitely be coming back in the future.

Pros: What's not to like. The install took about an hour and that was with splicing wires and taking my time. If I would have gone to a car stereo place I would have had to leave my car with them for who knows how long and pay them some crazy sum to install it all. Who doesn't like to save time and money?

This receiver was the fit my need to nerd out with my '06 Toyota Matrix. Super easy to install once you've connected the harness.

Pros: The receiver comes with a trim for the Toyota Matrix that looks much nicer than the complimentary one Crutchfield ships you. It also plays WAV format, which was important to me.

Cons: The microphone is good enough--don't expect brilliant audio from it. I placed mine on the steering column. I do get minor complaints of tinniness from time to time but no says it's horrible. You'll have to play with the color on the display to get it just right for your tastes otherwise direct sunlight makes it impossible to view it.

Easy to install in my 2010 f150 I used the PAC wire harness. The face plate trim piece fits very good. I would recommend putting the 2 sided clips on the trim piece after mounting the radio so you can take on and off easy. The PAC for sync is not straight forward. The wiring is confusing and not labeled well I would recommend calling the help desk if you have any questions. Once installed sync functioned correctly but volume on the steering wheel does not work you need a different controller

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It's alright and high powered. I couldn't get an eq setting that sounded good with my stock speaker set up even with a sub. Also, it's cheap and plastic and nowhere near bright enough. I returned it because I could not see anything on the screen ever during the day. Granted, I drive a wrx that has the HU tilted up, but unless you put this somewhere that is always shaded it is virtually useless. Also, at night when you can see it, it blinks very distractingly. I returned it because if the brightness issue and then was found that the pioneer HU I replaced it with had twice the sound quality.

Pros: Cheap, powers sub, looks good at night, loud.

Cons: Not great sound quality. Better than stock but you can find much better for the price. Not useable during the day. I want to stress that this isn't a problem of being slightly dim and getting washed out in direct sunlight. This is anytime it's light out.

When I was looking for a replacement for my wife's factory sound system that had decided to act up, I wanted the PERFECT replacement. Well, this unit (Kenwood DPX500BT) was one of three I had narrowed down for the job. My wife loves her Toyota Tacoma Truck but when the CD changer ate her discs and wouldn't give them back or play them, she was crushed. I looked for the cool features, like iphone bluetooth compatibility and it had to look good too. I liked the display on this unit and thought it would be the best looking of the finalists. The ability to pair two different iphones to the unit was also nice to have. The sound is amazing and I think I will have to get one for my jeep! Kenwood quality is definitely still up there where they used to be. The only thing lacking was the size of the user manual. would be nice to have a larger booklet to read.

Pros: Way better than factory unit in the 2010 Tacoma!

Cons: Hard to think of any

Exactly what I expected - Fantastic Head Unit!

Geoff from Jacksonville, FL on 6/2/2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Shipment arrived on Friday afternoon - head unit and speakers (4). 6 hours to install on Saturday. Driving Saturday afternoon with a fantastic system. Installation was straightforward with the exception of bypassing the factory installed JBL Premium sound system amplifier. Had to remove the passenger side front seat to get to it and uninstall. Plugged in the bypass wiring harness and ran speaker wire (cut short the subwoofer amp / speaker wires) to the head-unit area. Had to remove door sill plates and under dash panels to gain access to run the wiring harness. It went without a hitch but just took time. If I hadn't wanted to replace the 2-ohm, seven speaker system, this step would not have been necessary, but if you're going to replace an 11-year old, barely functioning head-unit, might as well replace the speakers too. The head-unit went in perfectly with the provided materials, using the factory mounting brackets. Installation instructions were 'spot on'. Only issue I had was 'post-installation' - there is SO much to this head-unit that the provided 'quick-start' guide isn't adequate for first time Bluetooth, Pandora, IHeartRadio, Aha, users. I muddled through the initial setup for the audio and BT pairing but it was 'trial & error' on my part. I finally went online and downloaded the real user manual from Kenwood (128 pages). I'll print out applicable sections and go sit in the car and figure it out and get it set the way my fiance wants it to be.

Pros: Install was simple once I figured out the amp bypass wiring harness routing and connection. Paired up with two different iPhones without delay, downloaded their contact lists / phone numbers automatically. Bluetooth is awesome - quick pickup of calls, excellent sound reproduction over speakers and the caller / callee can hear the conversation very well on the other end. Variable color / wide selection of information on display is very helpful. Outstanding sound - high / mid-range / bass

Cons: Having to run the amp bypass wiring results in soldering connections to HU plug in the vehicle - tough to figure length without running it first. QuickStart guide gets very basic operations up - anything else will require manual (separate download).

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am about 20 years removed from wanting to install aftermarket stereo equipment. I bought this when the radio in my Jetta decided to die for no reason. I didn't want the high school-senior look so aesthetics were a big deal. No disco parties, please. So after a lot (!) of research I settled on this Kenwood unit and I'm very pleased with it. It looks good, sounds great, and doesn't scream aftermarket stereo, which for me is a good thing. It's very customizable and with the adapter I was able to keep my steering wheel controls, which is cool. If you are looking for a double-DIN unit that looks sharp and has a lot of features without spending a ton of money I think it would be hard to go wrong with this one. Install was a breeze and Crutchfield, as expected, was great to deal with. A few quibbles: The center knob-the centerpiece of the unit-is really smooth and needs some texture on the edge. The menus are anything but intuitive. The included remote is unnecessary- I wish they would scrap it and spend that $ on another feature. I should also mention that the Bluetooth interoperability with both my Android phone (HTC Droid) and iPod Nano is excellent. Also, to the comments about the display brightness glare: Not an issue. I have the button color set to red and the display set to white (as close to is as the LEDs allow) and even in bright sunlight it is fine.

Pros: Looks sharp, great sound, Bluetooth works like a champ, very customizable, tremendous value for the money.

Cons: Set-up menus are far from intuitive (you'll need the manual), a few quirky UI issues, the remote is absolutely unnecessary. Center knob has no texture on the edge you grasp- how did they miss that?

I have put a lot of stereos in cars and boats in my life but this one was a snap, and it is all because that of the kit that Crutchfield provided me with for installation. Simply stated, the Kenwood DPX500BT that I bought looks like it was installed in the factory. A perfect fit, and no issues whatsoever. Don't hesitate to buy this one and I will nevr go anywhere else but Crutchfield. They know exactly what they are doing. What a great move by me!

Installation was a breeze. Operation and use was simpler than most I've tried. Sound quality is awesome. I own a 2006 Lincoln Mk Lt (basically a F150 with bling), that includes front & rear sets of speakers and subwoofers under the back seat. I soldered all the connections in the house (except for 2 connections I had to make in the vehicle to get the steering wheel controls to work). Simply plugged everything back in, re-installed the original bolts to secure the unit, and re-installed the panel. Instructions provided by Crutchfield were very helpful.

Pros: Awesome sound, easy to read display. Simple function changes (however I don't recommend making changes with the vehicle in motion).

Cons: I would recommend to Kenwood, better instructions for installing the unit in the dashboard.

I was looking for a replacement stereo in my Mustang, wanted a double DIN unit (1) to match the size of the existing unit and (2) I'm not a youngster and wanted something easy to see. This unit made my existing speaker/amp combination (Ford Mach) sound great. It takes a while before the controls become intuitive (and after all of my preferential EQ settings). It looks great in my dash, the colors are fun (especially at night), the USB and Bluetooth functions are flawless for both my iPhone and iPod. Crutchfield sent everything I needed for installation, and the guide was spot on.

Pros: Buttons are easy to see, large display, Bluetooth functions, and the remote control

Cons: Bright days tend to wash out the display, especially with the rag top down.

    Awesome Factory Replacement

Andy from Bowling Green, OH on 5/16/2014

I was very impressed with the radio. I was originally worried that it would make my factory speakers sound a little weak, as I have had this happen before with a factory radio replacement, however I was surprised to find this not to be the case. I have a 2006 Chevy Cobalt with the Pioneer 7 speaker system and this radio really made it shine. As others have said the display is sometimes hard to read in the sunlight, but I did not have any problems with the auto dimmer working with my vehicle. The only other slightly bad thing I can say is that I was disappointed to find that the menu does not go back to the main screen on a timeout, you actually have to press the back button. The bluetooth connect works perfectly with my iphone 5s, but I find that the music over bluetooth is slightly tinny. This is easily overcome by connecting my phone with my original iphone cable that came with my phone, which I do anyways to charge while I drive. Overall a very good radio and please do not let the VERY minor drawbacks keep you from purchasing.

Pros: Great sound quality, flawless bluetooth connectivity.

Cons: Display difficult to read in bright sunlight and no menu timeouts.

Color change capability and brightness control are pretty nice, as well. I wish there were less shiny surfaces on this receiver, though. They tend to collect fingerprints a bit. Looks very classy in the dash of our Sienna. Only real gripe wasn't with the receiver.... it was the installation kit. Just looks a bit "cheap" compared to the stereo and van. The manual was a necessary to get this radio set up. This initial settings were not intuitive - after using the radio for the past week, it does get easier. When I first turned it on, it did appear my speakers were shot if the radio worked well (same symptom I had with the stock radio) so, I replaced the two front speakers, and voila! it works great! I have a 2004 Chevrolet Colorado crew cab with just over 100k miles. Love the blue tooth too - I downloaded an album with some very old music to my iphone and did not have a CD to burn at the time. I tried the BT function on the radio by chance, and that was excellent - the music played flawlessly from my phone through the radio. I really appreciate the phone Blue Tooth function too; my phone book was imported within a minute or so, and voice commands work quite nicely. Thinking about adding Sirius/XM to add oldies 60s and 70s music to my ride. Overall, I'm very satisfied with this purchase.

Pros: Nice radio, fits well in the existing space - kit from Crutchfield was priceless; just followed the directions.

Cons: The manual is essential to setting it up properly - a little frustrating without it. The front panel does wash out a bit during the daylight - looks pretty cool at night.

The lack of an instruction manual is noticeable especially if you hook up your phone to bluetooth as by default you'll only get sound out of the front speakers. Nice looking receiver. Fairly simple to use and navigate through. However the sound on satellite radio sounds really bad. Not sure if its the receiver but my old receiver the sound was way better when listening to satellite. Sounds really digitized, not natural. Also the display is hard to see when wearing sunglasses or bright light.

Pros: Blue tooth works great, simple to use.

Cons: Sound seems off, not a multiple line display on satellite radio, so you can only display a channel name, or group name or song title separately. I like to see all these at once or scrolled across the display.

I am very pleased with this product. I bought it for my Chevy Express work van. I have tool loaded up and banging around constantly. The bluetooth microphone that I ordered with this unit is so fantastic that my clients do not even know I am driving. They hear no tools rolling around in the van either. Thank goodness for Crutchfield's phone in help because this unit took over an hour to hook up with all sorts of wires, modules and adapters. Overall, very happy.

Pros: Simple clean, works really well. Even made my factory speakers sound better.

Cons: took over an hour to hook up and I had to order screws to properly mount the unit.

So many features included at this price makes it a great value. Piece of cake to install. I'm using the onboard amp to power my front speakers (infinity) along with a powered sub. It definitely sounds better than the factory head unit, but not by leaps and bounds. Sound quality is just so-so in my opinion. The controls aren't very intuitive either. No direct source buttons so you scroll through everything to get to what you want. The Bluetooth pairs easily but I still can't figure out how to make a call. It doesn't come with the user manual. You have to find it and download it. I tried syncing with my ipod touch and the music kept cutting in and out. Still haven't figured out why. My point is that it's not easy to just figure out intuitively. Now, granted, I'm not the most tech savvy person and I'm sure I'll ultimately figure it out. The parametric EQ controls are just about worthless. They don't display in relation to anything and when you change frequency bands there a sonic mute while it switches. This makes it basically impossible to compare to previous setting to evaluate your changes. Just using the bass, mid, and treble controls were 10 times easier and I got the sound adjusted pretty close to ideal. Big thumbs up for this receiver, just expect to invest some time in getting it properly set up and operating.

    Pros: Great features/price

Cons: Not intuitive Should come with user manual Needs a bit more onboard power

    2011 Toyota RAV4
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Picked this to replace the dismal original head unit on a recently purchased used 2011 Toyota Rav4. Selected this over others due to best collection of options that mattered: double DIN, wattage, RDS, FM range, phone and audio Bluetooth. This rated out the best in it's price range for those options for what I was looking for. Using my iPhone 4S for the BT audio. The videos/instructions for extracting the old stereo were great, had it out in 5 minutes. The dash replacement kit and harness were also great - a main reason for selecting Crutchfield, the unit fits into the kit perfectly, which looks just like the original dash. One installation callout - the supplied brackets that bolt back into the dash frame are plastic and if you torque too much you'll mash them causing the dash to sag a little (the bolts are small and separate the bracket wings). Would be best to put metal washers on the bolts over the brackets to distribute the pressure. Had to call Darrell and Crutchfield for a wiring goof, they had the answers pronto. Great experience with the Crutchfield team. The owners manual is dense but deservingly so, this is a great unit with a lot of customizations for sound (different audio settings by source for example). Still working through the more complex aspects but so far, so good. The head unit solved 80% of the sound woes in this Toyota, will probably go for speakers next. For the phone BT, you'll need to run the supplied microphone to an external spot.

Pros: Sound quality, Bluetooth phone and audio, display, value

Cons: Takes a while to learn/customize/tweak sound

I installed this in my daughters 1998 Honda Accord and it sounds great. The install was very simple with the supplied wiring harness. Fit the factory dash perfect without any modifications. I gave the instructions to my daughter and she was able to figure everything out easily, not easy for her (blonde). She said her iphone 5 works perfect and is able to use Pandora, blutooth, and loves being able to make/receive phone calls. Being a girl (20 yr) she really thought picking different colors for the stereo was cool. For the price and features, it seems to be well worth it.

The DPX500BT is a well-built, good looking receiver. The buttons are all very solid, and the large center knob is nice. The Bluetooth connection with my phone was pretty easy to setup, and I've had no problems getting my phone connected. However, the sound quality (from my microphone) is not the greatest. There are settings you can change to the microphone though to adjust the quality (which I admittedly haven't done). The menu is not difficult to use with the knob, but it can be somewhat cumbersome to find the settings folder you are looking for. The sound quality is great with this unit and the Pandora controls are a nice feature. With that said, I would not have bought this unit at full price for the features it has. I bought it on outlet and it works great, but the new price would not have appealed to me.

Pros: Great sound, cool light display options, looks cool.

Cons: Price (new), Bluetooth sound quality can be iffy at times, menu navigation.

I put this head unit in my '06 Audi A4 Avant. The sound quality is great, the after-market steering wheel controls work ok (sometimes takes a 2nd click) but I have more functionality from the wheel than the OEM stereo. The audio controls are very good for a unit at this price point, as well as lots of functionality. I mated this to a Pyle amp to drive the factory rear speakers and 8" JBL sub. Radio reception is excellent on my factory shark fin antenna. Cons are: You have to scroll sequentially through all the media sources to get to what you want. I have all of my music on a USB thumb drive. To get back to the radio, I have to scroll through about 5 other sources. The front display is very glossy, so when the sun shines on my tan seats, I can't see the display at all due to the reflection/glare. I'd guess if you have black seats, it's not an issue. The bluetooth for the phone has a lot of audio controls, and sound is just fine for my in my car, but there is a lot of echo on the other end of the line, which drive the other person nuts. I haven't been able to adjust this out.

Pros: Radio reception functionality sound quality display colors to match the Audi red

I've had this on for about a week now on my 2012 Sentra and I'm loving it. I like the way it look, the colors, easy to read display, remote. It was a little confusing at first to change colors and change the input but nothing like reading the manual can't fix if you can't figure it out, maybe have to do one or two extra clicks here and there. One reason I wanted to change factory head unit was the glare from screen sometimes was impossible to read. But like I said its only been a week, ill write another review a few months later. I also put in a alpine 500W mono amp with the dual kicker Comp R 10's enclosure and sound great. The factory speakers also sound better as you would expect from an aftermarket stereo. I haven't had a problem during the daylight like some other reviewers have had, haven't used Bluetooth yet either but that was another reason I wanted the HU since factory unit had Bluetooth.

After having a Kenwood Excelon CD player last for about 14 years and through three different vehicles (it finally died) I did not hesitate to go with another Kenwood product. My main goal with a replacement was sound quality and value. This unit fits the bill perfect. The EQ lets you fine tune the way you like your sound with bass, mid range, and treble adjustments for the speakers and it also has a separate subwoofer adjustment . I'm running two 12" JL W6'S and can have the sub level at 0 and it still can be too much (if that's possible) I love the ipod/iphone interface (displays the song, can change songs from the CD play). I can't speak about the bluetooth as I have not made any calls, but it does paid with my phone with no problems. If you are looking for a quality CD player that gives you lots of sound adjustments, can connect to your ipod/iphone, offer bluetooth, then I would recommend this unit.

This unit was 96% of exactly what I wanted in a head unit, with out spending another $200 for a touch screen. The sound it produces from all inputs is more than adequate, unless you're one of those overly picky audiophiles or one of those jerks whose bass we have to listen to during our commutes. Bluetooth audio streaming was of good quality. Bluetooth cellular calls (in and out) were good enough quality. There was some "static" in the calls, but, chances are, its from the phone(s). USB input DID NOT recognize my Galaxy S3. AUX worked like it should. Volume control between applications was a lil funky. You'll have to get to know the unit to understand that. Installation was a breeze with the provided harnesses and trim kits from Crutchfield. EXCEPT for the trim bracket mounting screws. You will have to purchase the screws either on-line or at your local hardware store. (M5x8mm. Buy at least 8 of them). I got lucky and had some already in my hardware chest. Other than the missing mounting hardware.. I have yet to find anything wrong with this unit that I didn't already know I was getting into..

It looks really good at night but they really need to make it brighter and easier to see in daylight. Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I needed a replacement radio and speakers after I blew my factory speakers listening to 1812 Overture at full volume and then shorted out some of the controls trying to extract a stuck CD. I went with this Kenwood mainly because it was a double din no modifications fit (with adaptor) and has bluetooth for connecting with my phone. The radio looks nice and the color options allowed a reasonable match to the GM dash lights although a brightness adjustment would be nice. Not bright enough in sun and no dimming at night. The adaptor does have a wire that connects to the radio for night dimming but it makes no difference in the Avalanche. Another annoyance with the display is a pattern of blinking pixels that has no function whatsoever. The settings are overly complicated (DON'T DRIVE AND CHANGE SETTINGS AT THE SAME TIME) and I do not understand some of the terminology used. What is a Q factor? Downloading the instruction manual is little help other than telling when some options are available. (Examples:"SUB-W LEVEL"/ "LPF SUBWOOFER"/ "SUB-W PHASE" is selectable only if "SUBWOOFER SET" is set to "ON". "SUB-W PHASE" is selectable only if a setting other than "THROUGH" is selected for "LPF SUB-W".) There's got to be a better way. I have not yet installed the new firmware update so maybe some of my issues will be resolved. None the less, there are LOTS of audio source options and if you can figure them all out, this radio can be a tailor fit to your audio tastes.

Pros: Fits using Crutchfield adaptor without any mods except to the adaptor. Looks nice good sound a lot of options connect i-phone easy breezy

Cons: setting options is not for novice dimming does not work with my vehicle crazy stupid pixel dance

Cycling through Sources, Channel Menus,& Display Names, especially when you missed your stop, can be a major pain. Need a better "Back" button option for Sources , Channel Menus, and Display Name so you don't have to cycle through again.

Installed in 2001 toyota 4runner. Instructions were easy to follow. However only had to take it back out twice to get the mount right to fit face plate. Out smarted myself a couple times. Install took 2 hours should have only taken one hour. Great sound quality. I am enjoying it.

    Pros: Fits perfect. Easy install.

Cons: Wish there was a "night light" feature. No lights at night to see where controls are untill you yurn on unit. Eventually you learn where to feel for on off button.

The feature list is great for the price. The build quality is fine. The sound quality is a step up from stock for sure, but won't blow your mind. The design is good, I'd change a couple things, but overall the value is there. For $199, you really can't complain. You'd have to spend at least 300 if not more, to get much better.

Pros: Cheap, feature list, ease of use (for the most part)

Cons: Fingerprint/dust magnet. I keep my rig fairly clean and this thing needs wiping down daily. The unit could stand to be a little bit quicker as far as BT goes and menus.

I chose this Kenwood for my 2013 Honda Fit because it offers bluetooth, is double din sized, has a strong FM tuner, can play CDs, and for the excellent display. The faceplate and display look great in the dash and I love that the button color can be set to blue to match the factory lighting. My iPhone 5c paired easily and the sound quality over BT is excellent. The sound quality and volume are both better than the factory radio. Fit owners be warned, whereas the factory radio volume was limited, this Kenwood is not and the factory speakers will distort at high volume levels. The one feature I wish it had was a rear USB port so I could retain functionality of the factory USB hookup in the glove box.

Pros: Bluetooth works beautifully, display is large and legible and always displays the clock (big plus for me), sound quality is a big improvement over factory, variety of features for EQ and display, play/pause button, and a strong FM tuner

Cons: user manual is practically worthless, EQ and display menus are best for "set it and forget it" - don't expect easy on-the-fly changes to Bass/Treble/Mid, volume knob feels a touch light (though better than the double din Pioneer)

Cons: The instructions for the universal install kit were somewhat vague. Also had problem with letters on the display failing after one weeks use.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed the radio and it seems to work very well. My aim in this review is to give some information that anyone installing this radio in a 2005 Toyota Prius would find useful - and save them several hours of install time. Everything up to the point of install was well described and went smoothly as did the wiring harness hook up. However, there was no information provided about what to do with the trim pieces, brackets and extra screws that Kenwood and Crutchfield sent. Kenwood claims that their trip pieces make a custom install for Toyotas - not true for the Prius. In fact, discard both trim pieces from Kenwood. The Metra kit includes 2 plastic mounting brackets to replace the metal original equipment brackets. Throw those away along with the packet of flat head screws that Crutchfield included for unknown reasons. Use the original brackets and screws to mount the Kenwood radio, then make sure that the radio is mounted in the correct set of holes on the sides of the radio to put the radio far enough forward so that the very good-looking trim piece supplied by Metra fits properly. The only way to know which holes to use is by trial and error - there are no instructions in the Kenwood manual that help with installation. Finally, how DO you get the colored lights on the radio to stop changing???

Pros: Very nice radio. Metra trim piece looks like original equipment.

Cons: Very poor instructions for operating the radio and (iMO) only someone experienced with radio installation would find this an easy install.

I'v now had it for 3 month, and the display will sometimes read what mucic is playing. Also the bt calling doesn't work, while music playing does. First, THANK YOU, Crutchfield!!! Four phone calls to your EXCELLENT tech staff helped me get the wiring right. The sound that comes out of this thing is incredible. Crutchfield is great about sending all the necessary parts, tools, and instructions. I was impressed with the appearance of this stereo. It looks like a really nice stock stereo. The trim piece it came with makes it fit perfectly. Bluetooth works great for both pandora and hands free calls. I ran mic over to my speedometer dash and it seems to get good sound quality for anyone I'm talking with. I've bought other stereos from Crutchfield for cheaper (around $120) and I wish I'd of spent the extra money on those and just gotten this one. So much nicer for a little extra money.

Decent head unit. I've only had this unit installed a few days, but I like it so far. I've used it with my Android phone running kitkat (4.4.2) and the hands-free and BT audio work great. An unexpected bonus is that I can run my Torque Pro app connected via BT to my ODB-II adapter while simultaneously connected to this radio via BT. I've used SiriusXM, Pandora, IHeartRadio, BT Audio, Aux (iPod shuffle), and directly connected to an iPad Mini via USB. All work great. Sometimes Pandora has issues, but that is due to my phone being out of reception range of the cell towers. No fault of the radio. The radio was easy to install. I soldered all my radio harness connections to the GM adapter kit. Nice and clean. The only issue I had with wiring was that the dimmer wire didn't go to a live connection on the GM adapter. This is a 2005 chevy Silverado and that's just the way it's wired. I ended up running that wire to the brown/white wire of the HVAC panel below the radio and I have dimmer control now. The dimmer control isn't like the GM dimmer where you have continuous range of dimmer control. It merely dims the unit's lighting to a lower level - which is fine. Sound quality is good. I'm using some polk audio speakers front and rear and they sound fine. Keep in mind that to have the BT audio - including the HF audio - go to all speakers and not just the front, you must set the BT audio to ALL in the settings. To set clock - hold in volume knob! That one drove me nuts.

Pros: Good unit Includes Bluetooth for hands-free phone use and BT audio from devices SiriusXM ready - must buy SiriusXM tuner Pandora, IHeartRadio, Aha built-in

Cons: More color schemes would be nice.

First, I was impressed with the Kenwood by the adaptability of the installation. It comes with 2 faceplates, a steel mounting bracket and enough screwholes on the side to work with any installation. After installing the unit and the wiring, getting things up and running was a little difficult. You need the actual owners manual to learn how to use this device and it took a while to find it on Kenwood's website. Once found, I updated the firmware and the BT firmware and starting adjusting the sound. The audio control on this unit is excellent. Adjustable Q factors, parabolic 3-band eq, and settings for different sized speakers all contributed to creating a fantastic soundfield in my car. A tip if you are reading this and looking for a stereo for your car. This Kenwood will play your itunes music without having to adapt it. Let me explain. Most usb ports on radios will play mp3 files, but the Kenwood will play mp3, wma, and aac(itunes). So what's great is that I can grab a flash drive, make a playlist or 2 or 3 in itunes and copy my music directly to the flash drive. Just stick that into the Kenwood usb port and your music is ready. Separate the playlists into folders and the Kenwood handles that with no problem also. A great unit overall, great quality and sound and the ability to play aac files. Way to go Kenwood!

Pros: Ease of install. aac file playback. you can turn off pandora and aha if you don;t use them. great sound EQ system clean power amp

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall this is a good value. I installed this into a 2003 Infiniti G35 with Bose, so the installation was quite complex. I ordered the wiring harness, replacement climate control panel with double-din opening, and the steering wheel adapter. Thankfully Crutchfield's instructions were very good, so assembling the new unit into the new dash panel, wiring it up, taking apart the dashboard and old center console was't terribly difficult. Everything snapped back into the car and looked respectable, but we could never get the steering wheel adapter working. Working with tech support, I even re-spliced the wires but to no avail. At the end of the day, we RMA's the steering wheel adapter and got a new one. That meant I had to take the dashboard and console apart a second time. But the second time was a charm.the new steering wheel adapter sync'ed on the first try. The sound is OK, but not as good as the Bose/Clarion deck that was removed. What drove me to install
