HD Radio

Kenwood's KDC-HD262U receiver lets you tune into local HD Radio stations for clear, static-free AM/FM radio. You can also slide in a CD, insert a USB full of digital music, and connect a portable audio player using the front aux input. A user-friendly layout gives you easy access to all your sources, while extensive tone-shaping tools make your music sound its best.

Lots of music options

When you tune to an HD Radio station, you'll hear FM that's close to CD quality or AM that comes in clear and static-free. And unlike satellite services, you'll pay no subscription fees. If your iPod's hooked up to the receiver's USB input, you can also tag songs that you hear on HD Radio, then buy them later online. And most participating stations send out secondary programming, giving you more choices when you're in the mood for radio.

The receiver's front-panel USB port also allows you to access and control the music stored on your iPhone® or Android™ phone. With your iPhone, you also have control over iHeartRadio® and Pandora® Internet radio stations. And the USB port can handle any MP3, WMA, or WAV music files stored on a thumb drive. You can also connect a memory card reader or USB hub to the Kenwood's USB input and select music from up to five memory cards or USB flash drives.

Sight and sound

You can use the 3-band parametric equalizer to adjust the centerpoint of your treble, midrange, and bass controls. If you store your music on a portable device, you'll appreciate the Kenwood's Supreme Sound Reconstruction, which breathes new life into compressed music files. Three sets of preamp outputs let you add amps to drive your speakers and a subwoofer. The low-pass frequency filter and level control adjusts the bass going to your subwoofer, letting you make adjustments from the front seat. You can also adjust the color of the display and buttons, so this Kenwood looks right at home in your dash.

Want to keep your steering wheel controls?

In most cars, you'll need an adapter to retain those controls with this car stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and radio, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. You'll see the adapters that work with your vehicle when you add this receiver to your cart.

Great CD / HD-FM Receiver, great price

William from Oxford, ME on 8/23/2017

    2004 Subaru Outback
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Rationale for purchase - I wanted a basic, no-frills receiver with both CD and HD-FM at a reasonable price in a "legacy" car. Music - classical and Public Radio voice. The Kenwood KDC-HD-262-U fills the bill for a basic, no-frills CD HD-FM receiver to replace the old OEM AM-FM radio in my old '89 Nissan Maxima in a single DIN slot. I paired this with Hertz 6-1/2" Dieci speakers that I had used successfully in my 2013 Subaru Impreza. When bought as a Crutchfield "Scratch & Dent", it is a true bargain. Result - Better than expected! Sound quality is excellent, with minimum "fiddling" with tone / equalizer controls needed. HD FM is clearly better than analog FM - when you are not in a "fringe" or highly "multi-pathed" reception area (e.g. mountains, when signal strength is fine for analog). Complaints - The usual for "aftermarket" receivers - small labels, small buttons, excessive "advertising" (Pandora, iHeart, Sirius, etc. - i.e. if you bought it, you already know it's there from the selector controls). In other words, it's unnecessarily cluttered. (For my 2013 Subaru Impreza, I found the "upgrade" OEM Clarion HD-FM receiver on-line at a scrap-yard, which also allowed installation of the OEM back-up camera with a custom camera harness adapter and 28' of 2 conductor shielded microphone cable. It is simple, "to the point" and very functional when you know the configuration procedure which is *not* in the manual.)

    Pros: Great sound, especially HD-FM

Cons: Small (almost microscopic) labels and buttons. Un-needed "advertising" on front - Pandora, iHeart, etc.

The manual is good with well written directions. The radio preset station switches not so much. It takes multiple pushes to get it to change channels. I've had other people try it and same problems. As a frequent channel switcher it matters to me. i have tried different methods but to no avail... Audio set ups were easy and sounds good of course sound is only as good as speakers and there location.

Pros: good manual easy set ups

Cons: preset switches don't switch channels easily needs multiple attempts

The Kenwood receiver is absolutely perfect. I had wanted to get HD radio for quite a while and always thought it was too expensive. Kenwood changed my mind about that. It's easy to use and has plenty of options for customization. I got a local shop to install it, since the manual for my Jetta says that the receiver has to be programmed to work with the car. I've been very happy with it. Of course, once I got the new stereo installed I had to go get some new speakers to really appreciate it. :) Crutchfield and Kenwood came through for me on those, too. Win win.

Excellent! I wish all new head units has HD radios built in! I heard stations that I never knew were there. Fortunately, I replaced my old Kenwood with this one and the plugs and slip rings fit perfectly.

    Pros: Great for travel

Cons: Wish there more AM HD radio

    Sounds great, costs little

    1990 Mazda MX5
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This replaced an OEM unit in a '98 Nissan truck. I'm not using an external amp and still have older, aftermarket speakers of dodgy provenance. But it sounds crisp, full, and loud enough. There are some commercial-free HD stations in my market, so I ditched the satellite subscription for the truck; in a few months the radio pays for itself. The only negative issue is with the buttons (except the volume knob) being small, dainty things to hunt for.

Pros: free HD radio, great sound, great price. Crutchfield-supplied install kit has a very clean fit.

    Cons: small, sparse controls

too many un necessary controls ,most on the volume control knob. If you accidentally push it in you are in the menu for adjustments. Buttons too small . Unable to find color and brightness to suit daytime driving and cannot see display due to this. Has great sound and will hopefully last the 15 years the last Kenwood Did

    2008 Kia Sedona
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this CD receiver as a replacement for a temperamental factory unit in my Kia Sedona. The unit appealed to me because it had only the features I wanted and had good reviews. The CD player has proven to be reliable, even over rough spots in the road, not prone to skip or pop a disc out. The set up is straight forward with good directions. The only gripe I have is that display is somewhat dim in bright light even with the brightness turned up all the way. I am using factory speakers, so I am still experimenting with the sound adjustments to get it where I like it. Overall this Kenwood is a good choice with a good price for a basic head unit.

Pros: rugged CD player; easy programming

    Cons: display brightness

Great sound. Great illumination. Easy install. I, though, find it cumbersome to use the Pandora feature on the unit. It is far easier to use the features from the phone. The problem is that once the phone is plugged in, the unit defaults to the Pandora mode.

Pros: Adjustable color schemes, great sound

    Cons: Auto default to Pandora

    Pros: Hd radio

    Cons: None

    2015 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall I feel that this a great unit for the money. I live in an area where HD Radio is popular so I definitely benefit from that feature. The remote is awesome because I can change the volume or song while working in the yard with my jeep nearby. CD player works great. If you have problems with the clock changing times, this radio can sync with USB devices, and if the USB device's clock is wrong it will change your radio clock. This setting can be turned off. The option to change the colors on the radio is awesome. Green during the day and red or blue and night makes it easy to see when it's bright but easy on the eyes at night.

Pros: Reception of HD content. More powerful than stock radio. Remote for control when out of the vehicle.

    Cons: Clock can be finicky.

    Crank it up!

This radio is very nice, easy to wire up, and looks amazing. It is really easy to adjust, and you can make the clock appear constantly, which was a big plus for me. Definitely recommend, though the insert that was included with it did not fit over the stereo, I had to use the old one I had. Still highly recommend.

Pros: Good looks, easy tuning, highly adaptable.

Cons: Insert included was incorrect size for stereo

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Nowadays most buttons are too small, and this unit is no exception. The OEM unit had bigger, very useful buttons. AND the OEM unit had simpler, but more useful, display options. However this Kenwood has HD FM and MUCH better sound than the OEM unit. And that is why I bought it!

Pros: HD FM! MUCH better sound than OEM unit.

Cons: Buttons are very small & hard to see. Clock display is too small when unit is on & too big when unit is off. OEM unit could be set show "clock display only" while it was playing - nice touch. Clock Sync is VERY dubious. Dimming via dash light dimmer would be nice.

Scot from Cleburne, TX on 3/1/2017

I bought this thing (not from Crutchfield) and it never worked right. The reception was poor from the start and continues to get worse as I remove and install the antenna wire while jumping through the hoops of trying to get it warrantied so my guess is it is a cold solder on the antenna jack. As I did not address the problem withing the initial few days when I could just take it back, it looks like I am stuck with it in spite of it still being under its 1 year warranty. I have called Kenwood repeatedly and they just keep saying I need to buy an antenna booster. Funny that the old Kenwood that was in there and lasted 12 years until it died got great reception. I metered out the antenna. I swapped out antennas. I changed it to analog like they said. Yea I bought a HD radio so I can revert back to analog signals. Now it gets Nothing, not even static on the AM or FM band but they keep saying I need an antenna booster. I can see the bloody radio station antennas 15 miles away from my driveway! I do not need a antenna booster But still Kenwood will not accept it's bad. I bought my first Kenwood radio in about 1977 and have been faithful to them since. After this Warranty fiasco, I am Done! Never again.

    Pros: none

Wow-I'm impressed! Must have HD radio, usb port, aux jack and still has a cd player for a great price. With bass boost and loudness controls who the freak needs a subwoofer? My cobalt has 6.75 sound ordnance door speakers and standard 6x9 rear deck speakers-sounds awesome! Free shipping included with 1st rate schematics and Crutchfield's service/reputation you can't go wrong.

Pros: Excellent reception HD radio. Loudness(!), bass boost settings.

Cons: Minor. As others stated display not bright enough in sunlight. Clock time gets out of whack even though 'sync' is enabled. Could be a Cobalt thing with all power auto off after a few minutes.

Just what I needed to replace a dead CD changer in my 2005 Dodge Dakota. There is easily enough power to bypass the the OEM Infinity amp and drive the new Kenwood speakers that were replaced at the same time. The sound is great. The many different inputs make it super flexible.

    Pros: Sound, Inputs, Power

Cons: Display could be brighter and the clock font could be bigger

    Great sound, sub-par display

does the job. even in my no-frills, loud, diesel pick-up the stereo puts out sounds i didn't think were possible in my truck. everything works as described. clear radio reception and ipod control. plus the kids like the different colors. my only complaints are with the display. i've had it for 2 weeks and i'm still trying to figure out what color/brightness is best. it is really hard to read the time in bright sunlight. at night, the bottom buttons kind of disappear. the only thing i miss from my OEM stereo is the easy-access (one button) bass and treble controls.

    1977 Saab 99
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Works fine, at a good price for a car radio with HD FM. Less maddening to program after installation than the Pioneer unit that I put into a newer SAAB (1987) a couple of years ago. Extended maddening hassles were probably caused by some anomaly in the old wiring, which set off the dread "miswiring" message. Calls to service reps got me intelligent advice that eventually enabled me to make the thing work. Guys were intelligible, well-informed, and quick to grasp what was (or wasn't) going on. My nonstandard installation (in glovebox of 1977 SAAB 99) and the severe shortage of under-dash space, plus the mass of irrelevant wires on the new unit that had to be crammed somewhere out of the way, plus my declining dexterity and vision, made this a harder task than what I remember from 30 years ago when I put in the now-dead Clarion cassette radio (probably a Crutchfield purchase). "Miswiring" reappeared on a 6-degree day but went away, and I haven't run the car much in the winter. We'll see how it works when the car gets out to enjoy Spring temperatures. Only objection to the packaging, etc., was the type-size on the instructions--difficult to decipher even with big magnifier and extra light.

Great value. This radio has all the features I could ever need. With the installation gear I received I had this installing and running in less than an hour. Simple setup and intuitive operating. I found I didn't need to refer to the manual except for a few minutes. even advanced features. Very easy to operate on this radio. Also once one experiences HD radio, you don't want to be without it. Smart phone control but no hands-free talking but didn't pay double for that. Specs are good and this radio sounds great. ONLY con I can think of is that clock display digits are small; only significant if trying to see while driving. Delighted with this radio.

    Pros: Great value

    Cons: Small clock displayed

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Good receiver easy to navigate. You have to go through all the colors to see what works best in bright daylight. The green, yellow/green, and orange/red seem to be the easiest to read in the day time. The red and blues are almost impossible to see at times. The clock display leaves something to be desired. My eyes are good enough to see it but if your vision is a little off I can see that being an issue as it's small. The buttons are labeled pretty small hard to see. I can navigate thru just like kenwoods I've had, no problem.

Pros: Easy to navigate and use. Works great. Picks up stations great.

Cons: Clock really small, so are the labels on some of the buttons.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Being this my second Kenwood stereo I knew what I was buying, I have another (more complete) Kenwood unit installed in another car but this is a winner for the price I paid. It has Some of the features of more expensive models (HD radio and USB) for less than half of the price, it Does Not have Bluetooth. The audio options are very basic, don't expect a huge amount of processes and variables you can play with, but it's enough to produce a more than decent sound (depending on your speakers, obviously). As others already wrote, the display is sometimes a bit difficult to see, especially on very sunny days but you get used to but in the end it's a great bang for the buck.

Pros: HD radio, USB, audio quality, price.

Cons: No Bluetooth, basic audio customization, display is not easy to see during the day.

This is an awesome head unit. It brought my factory speakers back to life! Only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because it is difficult to see the display when the sun hits it just right. Other than that no complaints.

I purchased this unit as a simple upgrade to a stock stereo in my 2004 F350 and its been anything but a simple unit. I have been extremely pleased with the features and function along with the output of this unit. The USB feature along with the HD radio sold me, along with the quality of the Kenwood brand. I was looking for something that could handle a large volume of MP3's on a memory stick and other models from JVC, Pioneer and Sony did not match up. Kenwood handles 20k+ MP3's on a USB drive with up to 999 per folder.

This stereo is amazing. I installed it in my 1990 BMW, that has a factory amp, and 10 speakers. Works great. Easy to navigate, HD quality is very nice on the radio. I truly made a good choice with this stereo, glad I bought this specific one. I didn't try the USB yet. I called Crutchfield twice, for tech support. The adapter that came with it was wrong. Hey, it happens. My car is a 1990, so it actually didn't have a standard plug. Two times with Tech support, the second time, they told me how to wire the speakers, since I was wiring a factory amp. No Good! Almost overheated the stereo!! I ended up calling my buddy, he came over, and got me hooked up. I will still order from Crutchfield again though. Fast Shipping! Good price!

Pros: Very good sound and quality. Easy to Navigate with, and great color choices for the stereo illumination. I got lucky, the orange matched my cars cluster color!

I'm very happy with this radio. I replaced the factory radio in my 2003 Mercury and there is a big difference. Stations tune in better and I am able to get HD radio channels now which is new to me. My Vietnamese wife was happy as we were cruising the channels and found one in her language. It must be HD only because we had never heard it before on the old FM. I have not tried out the USB yet but that was one of the main reasons for selecting this radio. Crutchfield was very helpful in the install. I sent several emails asking about the wiring and they verified what was needed. I needed the reassurance even though it was in the manuals. It turned out to be an easy install taking about 1 hour. Thanks Crutchfield!

Pros: HD radio. Clearer reception. I like the remote since my car does not have steering wheel controls. I didn't think that I would use it but it really is safer than trying to use the dials on the radio.

    Cons: None so far.

I received this yesterday along with the install kit. The hardest part of the install was joining the wires with Scotch-Locs. Everything was straight forward and I had the dash apart and the unit installed in 15 minutes. The unit itself seems to do everything it promised. It's easy to use and sounds great and is a huge improvement for my truck.

Pros: Seems like typical Kenwood quality, which I like. The install was a breeze. I went to set the clock and even that was set. (Must have picked up time from a radio station). I am very pleased with this purchase and can recommend it.

Cons: Like others, I think the display could be a bit brighter for daytime use. The clock is small and a little hard to read. Just annoyances rather then issues.

This receiver is good quality and functional. I had this receiver installed in my wife's car last year, and I purchased the same so we both did not have to learn a new set of controls. That being said, and previously not using this receiver everyday, I now know a couple of things I do not like about this receiver. First, as others have commented, the display is not really visible in daylight, although it is fine at night. Second, the "random" play feature is not very random. Sound quality is good and I like the HD radio.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I really like this radio. It has plenty of features, and the reception is amazing now that I have it hooked up correctly. On the wiring harness, the blue antenna amplifier wire is tagged as optional just like the steering control wires, so I didn't connect it, but then I saw in one of the reviews here that it is necessary for good reception, and wow, it really made a difference. I get tons of stations. This radio is not very easy to use. The controls are not intuitive and require some reading and memorizing. Worse yet, as people have noted, the display and also the tiny text on the buttons essentially disappear on a sunny day when I'm wearing sun glasses. As for the buttons, I'm sure I will know them by feel eventually, but with the display, it's turned up to the highest brightness and is still very hard to read on a sunny day. That's really unfortunate for such a great radio.

Pros: -This radio is fantastic for all the features (AM/FM/HD/CD/USB/AUX). -It also looks neat. -It sounds great. -It gets great reception. -It has a full-featured EQ.

Cons: -The display and button labels are very hard to read if you're wearing sunglasses. It's very dim, even on the brightest setting. -The controls are non-intuitive and require some learning, memorization, and practice.

5-star all the way around! I was looking for an efficient head for a vehicle that did not have a radio for years. Bingo. Got some Jensen The HD Radio is a Great perk for an under 100$ head, and the 6 pre-amp, 2.5V outputs give me flexibility for a future transfer of a Kicker 5ch amp. Great purchase, love the cool colors as well. Quick response on the CD player, and the inputs read metadata well. VERY PLEASED Crutchfield customer service is GREAT...Thanks

Pros: Really is a nice head unit. Friends have all told me how they like Kenwood. Cannot stress how much the preamps allow for an upgrade of components, in the future when more paydays happen;>) Should be great bang for the buck

The Kenwood has a lot of bells and whistles but I ignore that. It is a great sounding unit for the price.

Pros: Very good sound, no light shows and above all a good value from a good brand.

Cons: Not the unit's fault; but the junk free installation kit that comes with the purchase. I hope to be able to find a better installation kit because I don't feel it has the stability hold up on the road.

I used this stereo on a 1989 Voyager with an factory Infinity amplified system and it works just fine. The wiring harness kit helped a lot and it was easy to put in once I read the instructions. The radio sounds much better than the factory one but I am not sure if that is because I am mostly listening to my local NPR station and it is in HD. The radio can do many more things than I really need and I have not yet used the USB or MP3 inputs but I will soon, just to test. As stated in many other reviews, seeing the clock is very difficult but that is my only complaint so far.

Pros: It works well and the one HD station I have tried so far comes in great. The sound is very clear and the radio was very reasonably priced.

I'll start by saying another great Kenwood product. I have always had good luck with their products, car audio or home audio. This receiver has just enough options to be a great value for the price. I wanted to replace a Pioneer deck that has been trouble free for 17 years now but wanted a usb a auxiliary port for more music options. The unit has a lot of good functions including the added aux ports. For starters, there are 3 sets of preamps, front, rear, and subs. Sound quality is excellent. While setting the gains on my amplifiers found that at 40 hz and 1 kHz this Kenwood receiver showed no clipping at max volume. I've only really ran Pioneer and Kenwood decks in recent years and almost always see the receiver clipping a notch or two under max volume, which is great but to not clip at all is even more impressive especially for a budget deck. Overall I am very pleased with this receiver and from experience with Kenwood products, I expect years of enjoyment from it!

Pros: Easy to use, great value, 3 sets of preamps , great sound, no clipping at max volume

    Cons: None

Works and sounds great. The only issue I have is preset radio stations are apparently limited to a total of 6. Not 6 per band (3 FM, 1 AM). 6. Maybe I'm doing it wrong but even the users guide says nothing about 6 per band. Love Kenwood quality.

    Pros: Sound great.

    Cons: Limited radio presets.

I'm a car audio (SPL) competitor and I've been using Kenwood for years now. Their head units have never let me down and are always bullet proof as far as build quality goes.

Pros: Affordable 4v preouts Adjustable display color USB slot cover prevents dust/debris problems

Cons: Sound quality is not as good as others but I'm an SPL competitor so SQ is not a huge concern for me.

The radio did everything it was advertised to do.. Sounds good. Install kit worked but included some steps that weren't needed. Only problem was bad reception when first installed but after talking with tech support they found the problem which was my install and now everything is great. Only downside is display is very hard to read during daylight. I recommend this product.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I replaced a head unit with a worn out harness, which was causing a speaker not to play. Replacing the head unit fixed one of those. Easy to put together, the harness provided free by Crutchfield was prestriped and labeled, and the booklet from Kenwood is easy to use. The android connect didn't work with my phone, but my micro USB port is messed up so I'll take the blame there. I pod compatibility is cool. So is the remote, it's fun. Overall, I'm very satisfied.

Pros: ?Variable color ?Bass and Treble control ?Easy to install ?USB and 3.5mm Auxiliary ?CD player ?HD Radio

Cons: The only cons I've experienced are due to my other things being broken. I have another speaker that isn't working, so I'll have to check that wiring, and my phone is busted so the android compatibility didn't work. Both on me. No real cons!

This is an awesome unit with great sound quality and value! I had an issue with AM reception that also affected FM signals that was solved with the help of an awesome support tech at Crutchfield. The factory radio's RF amp (for the rear windshield antenna) needs powered through the blue/white wire, and worked great when I added that to the wire that turns on the amp in the trunk. You guys have truly earned my future business! With the kits matched to my unit, and a wiring kit for the Jensen amp in the trunk,

Pros: Nice controls that I learned easily. Superb sound across the board. Great value!

Have bought other Kenwood car stereos before from Crutchfield and it's still working fine after 8 years with zero problems. The feature, performance and price of my first unit is why I looked at Kenwood again! I just got this one for a used car I bought and wasn't disappointed when I found this unit. Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I loved my OEM MACH1000 stereo but the CD changer was a pain, always jammed. So it was time to find a replacement and Buddy was amazing. He listened to my requirements, primarily I wanted to keep the trunk amps and subwoofers operational with the new head unit, he offered me some options. Granted my OEM unit is 15 years old and the advancements in technology destroyed the old radio. Bass is so much cleaner and shapable, the mids explode and the highs are crisp and bright. The old unit had now aux inputs with this Kenwood I can now use my IPOD or a thumbdrive, and can still play my MP3 CDs. Color changing backlights are cool and would be great in my other Mustang that has 'My Ford Color' for the dash lights. hmmm might have to get another one of these Kenwoods for that car too. Thanks Crutchfield for the technical support on a couple wiring questions too. Everything I needed was in the delivery which was at my door before I expected it. Great product recomendation, price, delivery, and support

Easy enough to use, and audio performance is fine for my old ears in an old Previa minivan :). Worked better than expected with Google Play on my Android 5 phone. But, the display is way too dim to see in daytime! (Yes, we've turned off the DIMMER function, set the brightness to 31, checked for any plastic covering on the display ... it's just too dim)

Pros: good android interoperability; good sound; reasonable reception sensitivity

This was a tricky install due to the Beetle's tight cavity but the stereo is fantastic. Works great sounds amazing. Having HD radio access was the primary reason for the purchase but the deck is much more that just that feature. The ability to set the color display to my liking is great as the Beetle has a crimson red gauge display. Remote control is a nice feature, still getting use to using's not really a necessity. Overall I'm very happy with this purchase and for the price, it's a real steal.

Pros: HD radio, great sound, ability to change the display colors quite easily

Cons: My android phone is not completely compatible so Pandora and IHeart radio work but I can not yet favorite songs and channels...still working on this however.

I compared many receivers before deciding on the Kenwood KDC-HD262U product. I felt it had more of the features I was looking for in a receiver especially the last position save for the USB port. I listen to audiobooks primarily. The radio sounds great especially the high def stations. The installation kit and instructions provided by Crutchfield were perfect. The installation was easy and looks great. It is hard to tell that it is not a factory installation. I have purchased several receivers over the years and the Crutchfield team have always been very knowledgeable and helpful and provided the correct kit and instructions. I would highly recommend them to everyone wanting to purchase and install a product themselves.

Pros: Easy installation, sound great for the money.

I bought this for my son for Christmas. Everything he needed was there and he had it installed in less than an hour. He's a music major, so he's a bit of a snob when it comes to sound, but some of that could be the speakers. This was a great choice and we have no regrets.

Pros: easy to install, ease of use, great value, an eq or easier way to adjust bass/treble would be better

    Cons: none yet

Pros: HD works great, easy to figure out and use. Sounds great, will make you quickly want to go ahead and upgrade the speakers in your ride as well!

Cons: Just the quicker access to bass / treble buttons would be good or an eq button..

    Seems Fine

    BeegReeg from Hawaii on 12/28/2015

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Seems adequate. I've had a similar Kenwood model in my other car for a few years and it's worked without a hitch. I was just replacing the original radio/cassette (!)--not necessarily looking to up grade sound fidelity--and this one does the job. I usually drive with the windows down so it's not a pristine listening environment anyway. It's plenty loud, and I often use the USB input hooked to an iPod, which is very convenient. As with all new car receivers these days, there is only one knob and a lot of buttons which lead to menus, so adjusting the Bass/Treble/Balance/Fader settings should be done while safely parked in one's driveway--not at 75mph on the interstate. Also, all the sound pre-sets and EQ "scenes" are a bit confusing for a geezer like me, but that seems to be the way things are these days. All in all-- a decent radio for the price. Installation was fairly easy too--half an hour or so. There were a couple of extra wires coming from under the dash that had been attached to the old radio, but a call to the Crutchfield tech assured me that they weren't needed anymore. Do call them if you have problems. They are competent-- and nice to deal with.

    PC from Alabama on 12/27/2015

A really great receiver, especially for the money. Great features and amplifier. Picks up stations really good. Crutchfield instructions made it super easy for self installation.

Pros: The sound and features from this unit are so much better than the stock radio, no comparison. Reception really good. I will thoroughly enjoy this radio and all its features!

Cons: Kenwood really needs to work on the illumination problem for day time. If I have my shades on when the sun is out forget trying to read the display. Got it set to highest illumination still no good. Also, the interface and sound of the iHeart radio app not very good. I just use the regular mobile app. Other than these problems it is a fantastic radio.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This isn't the first Kenwood that I've owned, and compared to the other Kenwood units that I've owned, the setup on this unit is...well...different. It's almost identical to the JVC unit I put into another car, with multiple menu selections to make settings on the radio, particularly the audio controls. And while some may prefer the constantly changing colors of the display, my spouse found that to be an immediate annoyance. Radio reception is very good - even AM stations don't sound like they did on my old factory head unit. I have not been able to try out the CD or iPod connectivity yet, I'm still playing around with all of the new-found HD radio stations in my area.

Pros: Good reception of AM, FM, and HD programs. Once I had everything set up the way I wanted it, nothing else needed to be done.

Cons: Buttons are a little on the small side and the text is difficult to read - my spouse asked me, "where are my presets?" before she realized the small buttons under the display were the way to access presets. This is not a big deal after you're used to the radio (or if you have steering wheel controls). I'd prefer a single adjustment for bass, midrange, and treble as compared to the bandwidth and Q that's come from JVC.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I replaced the stock shaker500 head in my 2006 Mustang. I mainly wanted HD radio, and some sort of memory stick input to hold mp3's. This model was the cheapest option at the time. It installs ok with the metra kit. It does not look as nice as the oem radio but it looks fine. The music sound good from various sources, it is clear and loud and it has the ability to adjust the sound in many ways, but it is very difficult to get to those options using the knob interface. There is some kind of utility program for android phones which may be easier, but I did not try it. I loaded up a bunch of mp3's onto a low profile 8gig usb drive made by sandisk. There is also a utility on the kenwood site to analyze your usb drive and create a playlist. I did run that util (KME light), and that may help if you want to search by artist or album. Reception on the radio seems good. I heard a lot of stations that I didn't know were available. It pulled in the HD signal and held it pretty well. The only issue I had was if I turned the car off when listening to an HD sub channel. The radio will allow you to resume from the sub channel without first tuning the main channel. It will also allow you to set the sub channels as presets. When I started the car back up and it tried to tune to the subchannel directly, it would fail to lock in the signal. I let it scan for a little while but it is easier to move over one station then go back and tune the main HD channel, and then move to the sub channel.

    Pros: price, features, sound.

Cons: difficult to adjust options like the equalizer. Display is not very bright for a convertible in daytime. Front only usb is not recessed into the face so even a low profile usb drive will stick out a little bit. Tuning the stations requires you to press the left-right button a million times, they put every other possible adjustment onto the knob, except tuning. The 12hour format for the clock displays 'AM' next to the time (in morning) and it looks like it is displaying some AM station.

Good radio for the money. It has a few things that I wasn't impressed about, the clock display is way to small, the radio itself just doesn't seem to pick up very well, channels that have always come in clearly on other radios always seem to have a lot of static now. Overall it is a good radio, and I would recommend it to my friends.

Pros: price, sound, and easy to use

Cons: static on radio, display dim and small

If clock display size and fm reception are important to you please read the reviews on this unit and believe what people are submitting. Being a fan of Kenwood products I guess I refused to believe the negative reviews I read. Trust me thing has the poorest fm reception of any radio I've encountered in a long time. And talk about a small clock display. You're safer on a handheld cellphone than looking at the clock on this while driving. I am satisfied with the sound quality for the money spent. I'm debating whether to take a chance on an fm signal amplifier because of the negative reviews I've read on them also.

Pros: Sound quality is good for little investment

Cons: Clock display is tiny, fm reception is POOR

Great unit from the start. All the hardware they sent worked well with my old Ford. No issues, sounds great.

Pros: With the variable color, I found the exact shade of Green to match all the other Dashboard Lights...looks good. Not everyone realizes there is a lot of HD2 and HD3 Broadcasts in Urban areas. It's like having a Sirius, without the monthly fee. Still plenty of good music without commercials.

Cons: None really. I want to order the exact set-up for my '99 Dodge Pick-up.

Installed in a '92 Mustang with the supplied kit with new quality speakers. This is my first Kenwood. I pick it as the display seemed more readable than the pixel type. Easy to navigate the menu. Sound is great... All is great. May add a sub-woofer later when the interior is complete, don't need it other than the cool factor.

Pros: Easy to read display. The HD radio is amazing.

Cons: Being a little picky. There was a 4m screen missing that holds the rear plastic bracket. Pick one up at local hardware store.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just installed this stereo and the PAC steering wheel control adapter in my 2006 Nissan Altima and it completely changed the sound of my car. I still have factory speakers in, but you can hardly tell. The music has become crisp, the output is much louder, and songs with a good bass hit very hard. The EQ and bass/mid/treble settings actually effect the sound and can make your speakers sound exactly the way you like them.

Pros: HD radio, AUX input, USB input, built-in amp, EQ presets are actually really nice

Cons: The instructions for the adapter bracket for my car were kind of unclear and the bracket didn't go together very well, but I got it in and it does its job.

    Totally satisfied

Corbin from Sacramento, CA on 6/29/2015

Bought the stereo from another retailer and swapped it out with my old Kenwood unit in about 10 minutes. It's got typical 3 band eq settings and presets but I was happy to see the EQ Pro feature which lets you adjust center freq, level AND bandwidth of each band. I was impressed with the 'Loudness' settings, they act as an hdr compressor effect, or "speed compensated volume" as you see in newer cars. So try turning it on if you're having to turn your volume up way high to hear the full range in your music.

    Pros: Playz MUsIC!

    Cons: It's not a new car :(

The sound quality is great, I don't have to turn the radio up all the way to hear the music. I love the fact that it has a USB port that charges and plays my music. Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Definitely a good buy, everything works great. I put this in my '02 Mustang replacing the Mach Audio stock unit. Even though it was my first install, the included wiring harness and dash kit made things really easy. The install took a total of about three hours. There is a nice range of colors to choose from for the variable color display, and a nice range of options to tune the sound just right. The only trouble I had during install was with the wiring harness, as there were two amp turn on wires and one of them wasn't shooting 12v, but a quick switch over to the other wire fixed it. As someone mentioned before, the clock display is rather small, but that is my only complaint with the product.

Pros: -Wide range of colors -Many EQ options

    Cons: -Small clock display

First-time installation took a while, guide wasn't very clear

    Ryan from Massachusetts on 4/9/2015

    2003 Chevrolet Malibu
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was my first time installing something like this in my car and it probably took about four hours. The Crutchfield MasterSheet was reasonably helpful as an overview but very vague if you don't know what individual pieces of your car's dashboard are called. Once the OEM receiver is out, you're onto the manufacturer guides for your new equipment, which are obviously not tailored to your car. Have fun figuring out what to do with those extra colored wires. Sound on the receiver is okay - I found out after installing this that I can't turn the music up too high, now, because it begins to sound distorted and I'm worried it will damage the speakers. It took a lot of finagling with EQ settings to get the sound to a point where it didn't sound terrible, but I still don't listen to music much because I can't really turn the volume much higher than the sound of my engine without it becoming distorted. I purchased this primarily for the purpose of listening to podcasts and music from my phone through my car audio, and on default settings even the audio from podcasts was distorted, particularly the musical intros and interludes in longer podcasts. The Kenwood Android app is garbage, so don't bother with that. If you plug your Android phone in with USB and have the app installed it will just start playing music with seemingly little-to-no control over selection, and it will play on top of any audio you had playing before it started.

Pros: Looks okay - most of these receivers are pretty similar and kind of trashy looking, this one slightly less so. I build computers so I've seen a lot of "look like they were designed by a 14-year-old" cases, this is similar. I imagine that it sounds pretty good if your car has speakers that can handle the amplification It was cheap, which is good when you don't want to put a high-end system in a 2003 Chevy Malibu You can change the color of the lights on the receiver Charges my phone well

Cons: Somewhat difficult to install for a newbie Sound is distorted through OEM speakers, even for podcasts Android app is really bad Font on the receiver display is not at all enjoyable to look at Lights and display get very dim, even with dimmer off and brightness at max

I bought this radio to update my radio in my 1992 VW Cabriolet convertible. The radio was basically broken and I could barely hear the radio play when the top was up on the car and I definitely could not hear the radio when the convertible top was down! I'm so glad I spent a little extra money for this radio rather than buying a cheaper model at a store. Not only can I hear the radio when it plays, but now I can either play a CD or play my iPhone. I can not tell you how excited I am going to be driving around in my Cabriolet, "Little Blue" with the top down and radio blaring this summer! Rock on!

Cons: Only wish the clock display was bigger.

All the specific features I wanted. A little difficult to navigate compared to my JVC head unit I had in another car. Put in a 2000 Chevy S10 and the factory unit had better sound output, especially the bass even with the factory speakers. Doesn't matter to me because I was planning on getting a sub anyway.

Pros: HD radio, front usb and aux input, pre-amp outputs.

Cons: If you use an mp3 player that is not an ipod then navigation is terrible. A good unit if you are wanting to add features that a factor stereo doesn't have, but not the best head unit I have owned.

iPhone Direct Connection: The Kenwood KDC-HD262U's front-panel USB port can be used to connect your Lightning-connector or 30-pin dock connector iPod/iPhone to the head unit. The KDC-HD262U supports audio playback, music navigation, information display, and charging of your compatible Apple device.

    • Lightning Connector: If you have a newer iPod/iPhone with the Lightning-connector, you can use Kenwood's Lightning connector-to-USB cable (113KCIP103 sold separately) or the Lightning-to-USB cable that came with your Apple device to connect your iPod/iPhone to the KDC-HD262U.
    • 30-Pin Dock Connector: If you have an older iPod/iPhone with a 30-pin dock connector, you can use Kenwood's dock connector-to-USB cable (113KCIP102, sold separately) or the dock connector-to-USB cable that comes with your Apple device to connect your iPod/iPhone to the KDC-HD262U.

Note: The head unit's USB connection provides 1A of current to power and charge your connected iPod/iPhone when your vehicle's ignition switch is set to the 'ACC' or 'On' position (if your iPod/iPhone has no initial battery charge, then the unit will not recognize it).

iPhone Audio Playback w/ DAC Bypass: The USB connection allows your iPod/iPhone's stored music and music apps to be loaded instantly to the head unit and sound quality to be maximized through the head unit's 16-bit D/A converter, allowing for a Signal to Noise ratio up to 105dB. The Kenwood head unit supports audio playback of stored music, music apps, and podcasts on your iPod or iPhone. The KDC-162 provides music control and song/artist information display. You can choose between two operating modes.

    • Head Unit Mode + Song/Artist Info: From the head unit's front-panel controls you can search for stored music by Playlist, Artist, Album, Song, Podcast, Genre, and Composer. The contents of a Playlist or Category can be searched alphabetically (A-Z) or numerically (0-9). The KDC-HD262U also supports Repeat (file/all) and Random (album/all) playback functions of stored music on your iPod/iPhone. In addition, you'll be able to control basic playback functions (such as Play/Pause, Previous/Next Track) from stored music and select music apps streamed to your iPhone. During Head Unit Mode, the KDC-HD262U will display your iPod/iPhone's music file information such as Track number, Elapsed playing time, Artist name, Song title, and Album title. Newer iPod/iPhones with iOS 6.0+ allow you to continue to access your Apple device's touchscreen in this mode in order to access other applications; older iPod/iPhone devices will be locked during connection.
    • iPod/iPhone Mode: The iPod/iPhone Mode lets you control your older iPod/iPhone (iOS 5.1.1 and earlier) from its clickwheel or touchscreen. You'll still have access to basic playback controls (like Play/Pause & Previous/Next Track) from the head unit, but advanced navigation functions will be locked. No song/artist information is displayed in this mode. The unit will simply display "App & iPod Mode".

Android Connectivity: The Kenwood KDC-HD262U's front-panel USB port also lets you connect your Android smartphone for music playback. Click here for the most current list of compatible Android smartphones. Kenwood does not guarantee operation with all Android devices. Some Android device may freeze if the device is disconnected from the head unit's USB port without pressing the Disconnect button. There are 3 type of connection methods based on your type of Android smartphone and what content you want to listen to.

    • Hand Mode for Newer Androids: The Kenwood KDC-HD262U supports Android Open Accessory 2.0 (AOA 2.0), which lets  you connect your Android smartphone (OS 4.1+) to the KDC-HD262U's front-panel USB port and listen to stored music and music apps from your Android device through the Kenwood head unit. You'll be able to control basic playback functions such as Play/Pause and Previous/Next Track. Other advanced music navigation will still be done from your Android smartphone's touchscreen. In this mode, the head unit will not display song/artist information; only "Hand Mode" will show up on display. You'll continue to view song/artist information from the Android device's touchscreen. You'll also still be able to access other functions and applications from your Android smartphone's touchscreen, while listening to music through the head unit. If you make a call or answer a call from your smartphone while listening to music in this mode, the music will pause until you are finished with the call and then start back up again.
    • Kenwood Music Play for Newer Androids: Downloading the Kenwood Music Play app onto your Android (OS 4.1+) smartphone not only allows you to listen to stored music from your Android device through the Kenwood CD receiver connected via USB, but it also lets you browse your Android smartphone's music library from the head unit's front-panel controls. You can browse your store music library by Playlist, Artist, Song, Album, or Genre. You can also control Play/Pause and Previous/Next track from the head unit. In addition, the head unit will display song/artist information. You can exit the Kenwood Music Play app to access other functions and applications of your Android smartphone, while your stored music library is still playing through your head unit. If you make a call or answer a call from your smartphone while listening to music in this mode, the music will pause until you are finished with the call and then start back up again.
    • Music Control for Older Android Smartphones: The Kenwood Music Control app for Android organizes your Android smartphone's music, while providing quick and easy search capability from the Kenwood CD receiver. The free Kenwood Music Control App can be downloaded onto your Android smartphone from the Google Play App Store. Your Android smartphone must be running Android OS Froyo or Gingerbread (OS 2.2). Once the app is downloaded and has a chance to organize all the stored music on your Android smartphone, you can connect your Android smartphone to the Kenwood CD receiver via USB (your compatible Android smartphone must be recognized as a USB mass storage class device; not compatible with MTP protocol). The Kenwood Music Control app offers music browsing by song title/artist name/album title/genre, song/artist information display, a mood playlist (high energy/acoustic/standard/stylistic), and intro skip.
Note: The head unit's USB connection provides 1A of current to power and charge your connected Android smartphone when your vehicle's ignition switch is set to the 'ACC' or 'On' position (if your Android device has no initial battery charge, then the unit will not recognize it).

    Internet + AM/FM Radio

Internet Radio Apps (for iPhone): The Kenwood KDC-HD262U allows you to access Pandora and iHeartRadio online music services through your USB-connected iPhone (iOS 5.0+). Your Apple iPhone must be connected to the KDC-HD262U via the Kenwood KCA-iP103 cable (sold separately), Kenwood KCA-iP102 cable (sold separately), or the cable supplied with your iPhone. Your iPhone will need an active Data Plan account with connection to the Internet via 3G, EDGE, or WiFi.

    • Pandora App: The Pandora App (free) lets you play music from the Pandora music service through the Kenwood KDC-HD262U using your USB-connected Apple iPhone. The Kenwood KDC-HD262U provides control over the Pandora music service and displays Artist, Album, and Song information. You can select Pandora stations from your station list and sort them by date or alphabetically (A-Z). New stations can be created based on the current songs or artists playing. MOSFET Amplifier: The Kenwood KDC-HD262U is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit. The power output specs for the KDC-HD262U are as follows:

    • Full Bandwidth Power: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20-20kHz, 1% THD)
    • Maximum Output Power: 50 watts x 4 channels

6ch/2.5V Preamp Outputs + Sub Control: The KDC-HD262U features front, rear and subwoofer 2.5-volt preamp outputs. The front and rear speaker preamp outputs are balance and fade adjustable. The subwoofer preamp output is non-fading. The Kenwood CD receiver offers the following subwoofer controls, when you are using unit's subwoofer preamp output.

    • Low Pass Filter: The receiver features a built-in Low Pass Filter control for the preamp-output, when the output is set to Subwoofer. You can select from 85 Hz, 120 Hz, 160 Hz, or off.
    • Subwoofer Phase: You can adjust the phase of the subwoofer output between 180-degrees (Reverse) or 0-degrees (Normal).
    • Subwoofer Level: Once the Subwoofer preamp output is activated, you can independently control the subwoofer preamp output level (-15 to +15) from the CD receiver.

Front & Rear High-Pass Filter: The KDC-HD262U features a High-Pass Crossover for the front & rear channels when your front & rear speakers are connected by the unit's speaker-outputs or preamp-outputs. You can adjust the high-pass crossover from "Through", 100, 120, or 150 Hz. The "Through" selection is a full-range setting.

Speaker Settings: The Speaker Setting function tailors the head unit's audio settings according to the type of speakers in your vehicle. You may select a Speaker Setting of 'SP-Off' (flat/off), 'SP-OEM' (for OEM factory speaker systems), 'SP-6x9/6' (for systems with 6" and 6"x9" speakers), or 'SP-5/4' (for systems with 4" and 5" speakers).

The integrated equalizer offers 8 preset sound modes (Rock, Pops, Easy, Top 40, Jazz, Natural, Drive EQ, or User) suitable for the music genre of your choice. The Drive EQ mode is an EQ preset that helps reduce road noise. The User mode allows you to manually adjust the head unit's 3-band parametric EQ (Frequency, Level, and Q-Factor).

    EQ Pro
    Frequency Level Q
    Bass 60, 80, 100, 200 Hz -8 to +8 1.0, 1.25, 1.5, 2.0
    Midrange 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.5 kHz -8 to +8 0.75, 1.0, 1.25
    Treble 10.0, 12.5, 15.0, 17.5 kHz -8 to +8 Fixed
Note: You can store EQ Pro bass, middle and treble tone settings for each source (Disc, Tuner, Aux, USB, iPod, Android, and Pandora/iHeart Radio).

Sound Enhancements: The head unit provides further sound enhancements for your car audio system.

    • Bass Boost: The Kenwood CD receiver features a Bass Boost control that can be set to the following levels (1-3 or off).
    • Loudness: This function enhances low and high frequencies to make the sound clearer lower volumes. There are 3 levels (1-2 or Off).
    • Sound Reconstruction: When MP3 or WMA files encoded at a low bit rate (less than 96 kbps, 44.1k, 48kHz) are played, the Sound Reconstruction function restores their high frequencies so the sound quality is closer to files encoded at a high bit rate. The processing is optimized for the compression format and the bit rate used. When Sound Reconstruction is Off, the unit plays the original sound stored in the audio file.
    • Volume Offset: The level of each source may be independently adjusted to prevent radical leaps in output volume when switching from one source to another. The available settings range from -8 to 0 (-8 to +8 for Aux source).

The same color setting is applied to both the display and buttons. The Kenwood logo remains red.

Text Scroll: The KDC-HD262U will display song/artist information text from CD, USB, iPod, and Android. You can set the text scrolling feature to three different modes (Auto, Once, or Off) to scroll longer titles across the screen.

Brightness & Dimmer: You can adjust the brightness of the LCD from 0-31. You can also dim (on or off) the display. These setting only affect the LCD and do not affect the button illumination.

12Hr/24Hr Clock: The head unit can be set to display a 12hr or 24hr clock. The unit also displays the day (Sun, Mon, Tue, Wed, Thu, Fri, or Sat). The clock is only displayed when selected and does not display simultaneously with song/artist or station information. The day & time can be selected to remain on, even if the head unit is switched off (as long as the vehicle's key is in the accessory or start position).

Unfortunately, this model doesn't include a case or pouch for safe carry of the control panel; you'll have to provide something on your own. [ Sam  Oct 23, 2015 ]

You can change what is displayed by pushing the display button. The clock is one of the options. Such as Artist/Clock or Title/Clock. The only poor thing about the clock is that it shows up under your selection and is small. There is no option for only the clock. [ Allen  Feb 26, 2016 ]
You know I hgave the same problem with my system. The clock never keeps the time that I set. Have you had this problem as well? [ Anthony  Jul 15, 2015 ]
    yes [ TERRY  Aug 14, 2015 ]
Yes, you can add an external amp to the radio. [ Dawn  May 15, 2015 ]
I'm putting it in a 72 corvette with lilmited space. I would like to put an amp and bazoka sub with 6x9. Do you sell a box with 2 6x9's and a small sub that would fit in the back behind the seats that isn't to big? [ Stephen  May 15, 2015 ]
Absolutely! I have one powering my subwoofer through this head unit and plan to add another for my door speakers in the future. [ Zachariah  May 14, 2015 ]
This doesn't have much power to run a subwoofer without an amp. Won't get much boom. But I run mine to a self powered bass tube with a gain control sounds great. [ Titus  May 14, 2015 ]
I don't think so: it has six outputs; L/R Front, L/R Rear, and L/R Subwoofer, but it only lists power output at 50 Watts X 4. The output signal is there for a sub but I think you'd need an amplifier or a powered subwoofer. I am using it to power two 6x9's. [ Sam  May 07, 2015 ]
you can press and SRC button to turn off power to the unit. it will not turn on unit. you can enter radio stations. you can attenuate sound with ATT button. adjust the sound level. [ timothy  Mar 29, 2015 ]
It's there to control the radio without actually touching the unit. [ James  Mar 24, 2015 ]
To make calls, change tracks, radio stations, etc. I use it a lot while driving its much easier than reaching for the buttons on the unit. [ DANIEL  Mar 24, 2015 ]
I guess if someone wants to work the stereo from the back seat. I installed mine in a Miata (2 seats only) so I don't use the remote at all. [ Lance  Mar 23, 2015 ]
The remote is for people in the backseat who would like to control the receiver. [ RYAN  Mar 23, 2015 ]
