Our take on the Kenwood KDC-HD545U

Kenwood built the KDC-HD545U CD receiver to cover all the bases. Sure, you expect a CD player, but factor in built-in iPod® controls, an auxiliary input, and a cutting-edge HD Radio™ tuner, and you've got a powerful and complete package ready for your ride.

A multimedia marvel
With the KDC-HD545U's HD Radio tuner, you can enjoy the outstanding sound quality of digital radio broadcasts, with FM that approaches the sound quality of CDs. And if your local HD Radio station employs multicasting, you'll have the option of listening to multiple channels on the same frequency. When your iPod's connected to the receiver, iTunes® tagging lets you save song info, so you can purchase tracks you enjoy later on iTunes — a nice bonus.

Connection and control of your iPod is a snap with this receiver. Plug into the front-panel USB input, and take command with a variety of tools, including dedicated Search and Return keys — you'll find it easy to get to the tracks and playlists you want to hear.

You can play your store-bought and recordable CDs, including discs full of MP3, WMA and AAC files. If you'd like to expand your system, you can add a Kenwood CD changer or satellite radio, or use the front aux input for a direct audio connection from virtually any audio source.

Convenient shortcuts
The Mixed-Preset Memory feature gives you a useful one-touch shortcut to a favorite playlist, satellite radio channel, an HD Radio station, and more. Once the preset buttons are set to your choices, you'll be able to jump from station to playlist to feature with one touch of your finger.

The sound quality story
A strong built-in amp provides plenty of power to drive your speakers, while the 24-bit digital-to-analog converter brings out every last detail in your music. Use the 3-band equalizer to tweak the highs, mids, and lows for the perfect sound curve for your car.

If your aim is maximum sound quality, you'll appreciate the three sets of preamp outputs for connecting and controlling a full setup of external amps and subs.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can use this adapter to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Kenwood stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Kenwood, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

    Good & bad

RO from Coppell TX on 3/7/2012

Good sound and relatively easy to install. Has all the function we need- but very small buttons and some quirky controls. Much better than my factory model.

Pros: good sound, good volume and many features

Cons: Really cheap aluminum USB port- slowly loosened up to point it would not hold a USB cord. Cost me $75 to get it fixed- since just out of warrantee.

Had unit for 4 months before the pre-amps blew out; now I don't have any sound coming to my amps and speakers. It was just out of warranty and Crutchfield would not do anything about it. Kenwood was no help either.

    Pros: Great while it worked

Cons: Died after 4 months of use.

I bought this in late december of 2010 considering I came home from the Corps and purchased a truck. I always liked pioneer but. This little unit caught my attention. I looked at the specs and they were not bad. I actually thought they were good. Asked some of my friends bout Kenwood and they all gave a thumbs up. I will say that when your pushing with this IT DOES HAVE A CLEAR SOUND WITH LITTLE DISTORTION. I have it installed in my 02' Crew Cab Chevy S10. But on a smaller note. My factory pushed more RMS than this. It was louder and less static. I do like all of the features and add ons that this has. All in all not a bad unit for the price I suppose.....

Installed this in my 2000 Ford Mustang, with the Mach 460 stock sound system. I had always thought my cars sound system was pretty good, but after installing this headunit i was really impressed. Has all the features i wanted, looks clean and stylish, LEDs arent overly bright, and i can read them easily enough, kinda bad in daylight with glare, but thats all gloss headunits. Puts out enough power that im sometimes worried about damaging my sound system, and retains overall quality very well when up at high volume. I really am impressed with this thing, and it only has one major downside. When i turn my car on it has a high pitched chirp, and im not a fan of it, it made me cringe the first few times entering the car, and anyone who doesnt expect it cringes too. But its only on power up, called support and they said its normal, so yeah. Anyways i do really like it.

Bought this unit for my birthday in March. Had it installed professionally in my 2002 Highlander. Considered replacing the stock speakers, but didn't need to since the unit has excellent bass response. Also, there is ample power, thus no need for an external amplifier! The sound produced surpasses the quality of my wife's top-of-the-line stock system that came in her Camry. The only distraction is that all MP3 players are not compatible, and had to upgrade to an ipod from the Sony Walkman I had. Very pleased with the unit and Crutchfield's staff support.

The features included on this unit for the price is AMAZING! It all works as advertised. The iPod / iPhone interface and HD Radio are fantastic. The audio quallity equals that of untils costing 300.00 and above. It has to be heard to be believed. I never knew what I was missing. Istallation time was a snap at less than 30 minutes. Crutchfield supplied all that I needed for a clean, professional installation. Don't even consider buying anywhere else.

I'm very impressed with the usability and feature set of the KDC-HD545U. The MP3/IPOD/IPhone adapter is a great feature of the unit. The only drawback, I wish the adapter was located in another area on the unit, compared to the location on the front of the unit. Thus I could remove the unit's faceplate without disconnecting the cable and subsequent MP3 unit.

This unit works great. If you use a USB flash drive with it a lot, you might get a right- angled USB cable such as part RR-AAR04-04G at usbfirewire, which lets your drive hang down from the unit ... this way, your flash drive isn't sticking out of the unit (and perhaps easy to hit or bust off). It will also reduce wear on the USB socket, so it doesn't become loose or break off inside the unit after a while. Note that some of the documentation suggests that you have to buy an optional Kenwood cable to use the USB socket but this is not true; any old USB drive can stick right into it. Hey Crutchfield, you should consider carrying some right-angle USB adapters.

Replaced my 15 yr old factory stereo with this unit after reading all the positive reviews of it. Installation was a breeze (and I have never soldered electrical wiring). It was a fun and rewarding experience to install myself. Understanding the owner's manual and the unit's functions was a little tricky. But, once I figured it out, it has been a great stereo. Can't beat all that it does for the price. I would definitely buy a Kenwood again and I would definitely order from Crutchfield again.

I installed my new kenwood KDC-HD545U last weekend and I couldn't have been more pleased with the features and quality of this head unit. I hook it up to four kenwood speakers also purchase through crutdhfield and 8" kicker subwoofer. The kenwood head unit pushes the four speaker perfectly and an 800w amp suppling the woofer. Let my just say it took less time than I would have figured with the supporting cast at crutchfield. Thanks again it was a great first time experiance and will refer you guys every time.

What can I say, "It rocks"! It was easy to install in my Miata. The sound is excellent. The HD radio has very good reception. I now can tell the name of the artist and song. My Ipod hooks up with ease, so if there is nothing I want to listen to on the radio my Ipod has everything I enjoy. Controls are easy to understand and operate. I am looking forward to the warm weather with the top down and the stereo cranked.

I wanted to update my car stereo from the original 1994 tape deck and found this Kenwood model a great fit for my needs. It has a CD player (not so common on 1994), a digital radio that lets me access more options in our rural area, and a USB plug in for my iPod. The controls are very intuitive and controlling the iPod using the radio knob is a great feature. Installation was easy and straightforward.

I based my selection on the 135+ reviews rating the Kenwood at 4.5 stars. And the customers were right. The instructions were very clear but I had one question which was answered by someone at Crutchfield support and he gave me a tip on another wiring topic. This was on a Saturday so I was impressed by the quick response to my call. I installed the radio myself in my wife's Toyota Camry and she loves it and the storage space under the radio which she uses for her ipod touch. I am now considering replacing my car's radio and I won't hesitate to order one from Crutchfield. Well done, you guys rock.

Very good replacement for an existing am/fm/cd receiver. Vehicle is a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 4wd extended cab. With the included kit, this receiver fit easily into the existing slot. The included wire looms worked fantastic; just had to connect same color wires (used in-line connectors). Did this on the kitchen table then clicked the wire loom to the existing wiring harness. Total time to remove and replace receivers was less than one hour. Radio itself is very good. Plays all CDs and my daughter loves the ability to attach her ipod easily to the USB port in front (won't say what I think of some of her songs though). Channel buttons are small, especially here in the north where wearing gloves makes changes a little more difficult. Would like a better scan function. Over all, my experience with Crutchfield has been excellent.

positives: excellent radio, connectivity is varied and amazing, works really well with every portable device I own, sounds great, installation was a snap ! Great value for the $$ negatives: the knob is on the left side, your hand blocks the view of the display when you use it. Not a big problem but it would have been more ergonomic to have the knob on the right side. In bright sunlight the display is hard to see, if the sun is shining on it, it completely washes out.

    Decent upgrade

    2001 Jeep Cherokee
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The good: I have a 01 Cherokee, and I upgraded from a factory stereo to this Kenwood unit. The power is not bad, and certainly made the factory speakers sound quite a bit better (especially now that they are all playing), but I'm pretty sure I will have to add an amp if/when I change the speakers. For the price, it is a very good upgrade from factory. The wiring kits included from Crutchfield were perfect, and made installation fast and easy. The bad: The reception on the radio is sub-par. I have it grounded as per crutchfield's instructions, and yet the HD radio still jumps back and forth to analog, creating a distracting music echo of sorts. I'm considering upgrading my antenna to a powered one to boost my reception. I was playing a CD, and it sounded amazing. However when I switched to HD radio, all stations were suddenly EXTREMELY muffled! I switched back to CD, and it was crystal clear, then back to radio, and it was clear again! I don't know if this is a problem with the radio (I assume it is) or a weird glitch with Jeep wiring, but it is not acceptable. The face-kit provided by Crutchfield is NOT a perfect fit. There is a gap at the bottom of the radio about 1/4 inch making it possible to see the screws. Given the layout of the screws, it is not possible to install this upside-down, so I know it was not an installation issue.

I bought this unit on sale. So far I am happy with it. The wire harness kit made the installation easy enough. This unit has a lot of features for the money, and it sounds pretty good too in my opinion. You will have to look at the owners manual to understand some of the menus though. The front USB and auxillary inputs are handy to have. If you are listening to a station with a strong signal the HD sounds impressive, even on some AM stations too : ) Overall I gave it a 5 out of 5 since it was on a good sale, and Crutchfield has good customer service, and competitive pricing too. It would be tough to beat this deck for the price, I would buy it again.

I replaced my Alpine HU that suffered from very poor radio reception with the Kenwood HD-545U HU. I was looking for a HD HU with front aux inputs and found this gem when it was on sale. This receiver kicks the Alpine to the curb in quality of sound, features and quality of radio reception. I have this HU hooked up to Alpine 6x9 in frt. and Alpine component system in read doors with a MTX Thunderlink Powered Sub behind the front seat. 22 watts RMS pushes my system to the sound quality that was lacking with the Apline 9883 HU with iPod cable. HD radio works awesome in Atlanta and it boosts AM bands to near FM quality. i am extremely satisfied with this purchase. This unit is no longer available but the new model looks to be an upgrade to the former. Just buy it and you'll be happy that you did. thanks Crutchfield for an awesome system.

I must say that Crutchfield has vastly improved from what it was years ago. Their deals and pricing are very competitive. The pricing of this radio with the associated free equipment is an excellent deal. This radio comes with a lot of features that work well at an entry level price. Yet, this radio does not perform at the entry level. Good buy.

No need for an optional HD-Radio module for this one. Now if only Kenwood would do this with the REST of their head units. Come on Kenwood, Get with the times! As for the rest, it's very close to the eXcelon units I have in my other cars. The only feature I miss is the multi-jog control so I could press up to go to the next folder when using USB devices. This one is not quite as user friendly after installation, but goes in much easier since there's no external box to try to support up in the dash.

I was looking for an inexpensive radio to replace the Infinity unit in my '98 Cherokee. Main criteria was rear Aux input for my XM (CD changer adapter) and the ability to read an 8 gig mini SD card either directly of via a USB adapter. This unit filled the bill on paper so I bought it. I was so pleasantly surprised by the install kit and sound quality that I got one for my wife's '00 Cherokee, and one just arrived for my '01 Wrangler, the tow rig ('06 F-250) is next. All of these vehicles are noisy so I wasn't too worried about sound quality but sitting parked I am very impressed with these units, not concert hall but since I'm still running stock speakers the improvement is amazing.

This thing is amazing! Been a Kenwood fan for many years. Bought this solely because it was featured in an email and I really liked the idea of front USB and Aux In, and the price was right. Crutchfield provided everything needed for a perfect job in my 2001 Chevy Silverado Extended Cab, installed this in minutes and modified my truck rear doors to accept larger speakers, Polk db651, so now I have a 2 pairs of those being driven by this bad boy. It is amazing! Even has built in HD Radio, detachable face, CD of course, pulls in all my iPod, iPhone, and thumb drive mp3's, functions as an iPod controller. PLENTY of MOSFET power, and with 2 pairs of Polk db651's, I may not add a under seat sub. No reason to. This thing rocks! It will blow you away!

Installed easily from an old Sony Xplod. It would be nice to cycle through music on the iPod, but alas, you either have to use the dial (necessitating playlists) or loading the music before connecting the iPod to the stereo. Aside from that, works, looks, and sounds great! The manuals and extras that Crutchfield offered helped a lot, too...definitely worth paying retail value for all that they threw in (e.g. wiring harness, antenna adapter).

Great sounding system. Had a professional installation done. Handles my Ipod Classic seamlessly. Very easy to bring up artist, genre, album, etc... I also hook my phone up to the auxiliary port and listen to Pandora. The controls to get to the audio setup like treble, bass, etc... is not the easiest to get to,especially if you need to do it quickly. There are user presets you can setup though, and it saves the preset for each source,so you don't have to switch your EQ if you want jump from radio to CD or IPOD. Pros: - Bass Boost brings out big sound - Clean sound - Clean look - HD Radio tuner - Price vs. features offered. Con: - Controls for audio sound are not as accessible as one would like - Inability to adjust size of screen data.Smaller font-control would be nice to prevent less scrolling.

First i thought i had problems with the HD going in and out, i live around DC, so there are plenty of HD channels to choose from, but then realized from other forums that it is most likely my antennae in my Altima. Second and last issue, is that it seems to have alot of problems with my iTouch. I have the new one iTouch 4, so it could be a compatibility issue, sometimes i have to unplug the USB and plug it back in a couple times before it works. Thinking it could be due to my using the "Random" play option.. Other than that, i miss my clock being there all the time on the factory radio. Would recommend this. Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I actually bought this HU for my 2008 Tacoma Regular Cab 4x4 (read, no power locks, no alarm) to replace the original HU, speakers, amps, et al... At first, I'd purchased it, and a pair of Alpine full range 5 1/2" speakers online w/ pickup in store from The big yellow sign place. Of course, despite the website's confirmation that the speakers were in stock, they were not. So, I asked to have the speakers shipped. In the meantime, I went on crutchfield's site and found the same HU for $30 less and, of course, got the free install kit! No brainer, ordered it and some JL Audio component speakers for the doors and it was on my doorstep two days later. Took the original back to BB and got a refund. I was a little disappointed that "capable" and "ready to do" are two different things in a HU. I assumed that I would have been able to stream my iPhone but learaned in the fine print I need to buy another adaptor. The USB connection is fine, but I'm still getting used to the folders on the screen of the receiver. In closing, great entry level HD Radio receiver. No HD Radio where I live, but the wife and I go to St Louis often and get lots of selection and like it. I did need a small amp to drive the component speakers. The 22W x4 continuious RMS from the HU wasn't enough to make my JL Audio's happy. Added a 60w x 4 amp and they rock.

I use the front aux port to connect to the headphone jack of the iphone for phone conversations though the stereo. Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The UP's: This is an absolutely awesome stereo. Excellent sound and features. The installation was incredibly simple and the instructions were (almost) to the letter perfect! Here is the only thing that they missed. If you happen to have an Avalanche with the upgraded stereo package (you will know this when you hook everything up and get no sound out of the stereo), you will find that there are actually two plugs in the factory installation. The secondary plug has a pink wire that needs to be cut and routed to the unused blue wire on the Kenwood harness (the service tech can walk you through this quite efficiently). That's it! Everything else was letter perfect and can be done in record time! The DOWN's: Okay the only problem that I encountered with this stereo was that the first unit that I received had a defective amplifier which the service helped me to identify fairly quickly. The really great thing that I will tell you is that the tech (after diagnosing the problem) had a new unit shipped to me within the week and I had everything reinstalled and working within 30 minutes. CRUTHFIELDS: This place is AWESOME and I will never consider going anyplace else for electronics!!!

So my wife drive an hour a day in her commute to and from work and the the only thing that makes it bearable is listening to books on CD. When the disks jammed in her 2004 Camry in-dash 6-disk changer she was very unhappy! Calling the dealership and finding that it would be $100 just to remove the system to have it sent out for repairs was not going to work. That's when a friend reminded me of Crutchfield. I typed in the year, make, and model of the car and this Kenwood system came up as the highest rated choice and I can see why. We have had in installed for about a month now and my wife who is NOT very interested in the "bells and whistles" is very happy. The sound is excellent and the controls are easy to use and understand. I particularly like the Ipod sync and controls. I do admit that it takes a little time to get used to the control sets for switching between functions but once you get through the basic learning curve you find that they all make perfect sense.

I love this unit! It is 1000% better than the Honda factory radio I replaced. The reception is excellent and very clear - if the station is available in HD it automatically switches to it. It's a very nice unit and it installed easily. The only con I can think of - the blue readout is not visible in direct sunlight. I have also gotten an "error" message a couple of times after plugging in my iPod to the USB... but that may have been my iPod causing the problem - I'm not sure. I am yet to fully explore the system, USB and everything.. But within a month of use I can say this : Pros : 1) The HD radio is very good, sounds better and solid. 2) Though the receiver face is ugly 'purple', once you turn it on, it looks brilliant blue and does not look cheap. 3) Too many features. 4) The cruthcfield vehicle kit, harness is superb.. instantly saves some $20 + extra hassles. Cons : 1) The on/off control itself is too small and difficult to operate. Too many functions being operated by too few buttons :-(. But then you have too many features :-) 2) Takes a while to read MP3.. more than five seconds to start... 3) If you are not excellent in English, in the wiring, in following procedures, you will end up paying more than what you could have spent with a professional audio installer. I understood that, In my Acura TL, I have to remove screws from hand rest, then in gear shift knob, center panel, then audio system face and remove the audio system... wait.. you have just removed the existing audio.. not yet started with new one!!.. safely I paid an installer and did it.. 4) No inbuilt blue tooth ( but I knew it before buying) 5) When there is no CD it is not displaying 'NO DISC'. It just keeps quite. I give four star since : sound seems better than my original Acura , Does everything it promised to in perfect way, with cons listed are not permanent or annoying.

I destroyed the connector on my car when it would not come out of the old receiver easily and Crutchfield tech support spent close to two hours leading me through hard wiring the new unit. Further, I will never shop anywhere other than Cruchfield for my car stereo needs in the future. If I were rollin in the dough, would I care? maybe, maybe not. all in all a quality head unit. when direct sunlight hits, the face, it totally washes out, another little drawback, so you stick your hand out over to block the light to see, but still a good unit, Thanks crutchfield

The installation was very easy, especially with the Crutchfield installation instructions, wire adapter/connectors and Ford receiver removal tool. The door and dash removal instructions were right on. This HD receiver works perfectly and looks great. The sound is a serious improvement over stock. This system is a great value for the price, I recommend this to anyone wanting great sound, great features for a resonable price.

I came accross this Kenwood head unit and had like 146 reviews with a 4.5 rating so I opted to check it out. I was really just looking for a head unit with a Aux and USB port and this was a great fit. The unit installed perfectly with the mounting kit and harness included (first time I ever installed a head unit myself) and my speakers even sounded better than with the factory head unit which was great. The Ipod interface was flawless, but you just have to get used to the controls on the HU. All in all, great unit for the price. Great instructions for DIY installation from Crutchfield (took 1 hour to install it). Thanks!

This is the best overall value out there. Sounds better than a similarly priced Sony unit and has HD radio as a bonus. Enough power that you don't need an amp for getting great sound out of aftermarket speakers. Ipod and USB drive playback sounds great with no lag, menus are easy to use (no going through instructions needed), excellent features and controls if you have a sub or are picky about getting just the right sound. This head unit is phenomenal. I have a 2011 Accord with stock 6.5" speakers in the front and rear. I replaced the below-average sounding OEM radio with an older Alpine HU. There was a slight improvement in sound. Then I installed the Kenwood HU and the sound was amazing! The OEM radio sound is not worth mentioning/comparing, so I'll only compare the Kenwood vs. the Alpine. The Kenwood added more bass without distortion, along with the ability to fine-tune the midrange. Alpine power was 18W X 4, Kenwood is 22W X 4, but is sounds more like 35-40W X 4. I still have the OEM speakers and the Kenwood makes them sound aftermarket, no joke. If I replace the speakers later, I may not have to amp them, that's how good this Kenwood sounds. Having iPod controls and HD radio are great features. Fantastic head unit. Kudos to Kenwood.

I generally use my stereo to play podcasts saved to a USB flash drive. Folder navigation is (relatively) easy; certainly easier than navigation on other stereos I've used. Rewind is MUCH faster than my old stereo, particularly 30-40 minutes into a podcast where the back-calculation is more difficult. FM reception is also great. I haven't bothered to use the CD player yet. I'm sure I will, but CDs are a pain to change while driving.

After a ton of research, I opted for the Kenwood KDC-HD545U to upgrade my basic stock '04 Wrangler deck. Crutchfield could not have made the process any simpler! From reading the reviews, to selecting the final product, and finally including every little thing I would need to complete my install. The icing on the cake was free shipping and the best price around. The deck itself is great. It gave new life to the stock speakers, and the ability now to listen to HD radio, burned CDs or my iPod make this a winner choice. HD radio btw is near CD quality, and I find myself listening to it a lot more now. Since my Jeep is a stick shift, the added remote control makes driving and using the deck a lot simpler. As others have commented, the menus are a bit odd, but once you get the hang of it, they're much easier. Overall, I can't believe I waited this long to upgrade. Already in the mail are a new set of Polk speakers to maximize the sound out of this great stereo... Thanks Crutchfield!

Overall, a good deck considering what you pay. The best feature is the versatility. I thought it was very user friendly in playing the ipod: you can opt for either head unit or independent control. I really liked the HD radio, that definitely made it stand out; it picked up some extra stations I didnt get on the stock unit. The equalizer and other audio options are fairly basic. I cannot attest to sound quality really because I never got to upgrade the speakers. This unit has worked great and done all that I expected of it, but I am planning to add an amp for component speakers and I felt that I should get something with better preamp voltage (I have a feeling that this is a minor detail but the difference in price isn't too significant). Plus, I miss the EQ from my old pioneer deck. For someone running of deck power with maybe a small sub, this deck would be great, particularly given the price and the versatility.

Excellent! But a couple things to mention...

David from Huntsville, AL on 1/18/2011

I love the Kenwood KDC-HD545U car receiver! HD Radio is MUCH better than standard stereo FM broadcasts. My local classical music station never sounded better. My wife wanted something she could charge her iPhone with, and also control music from her iPhone. We prefer the "hands-on" mode and control the music from the iPhone and not the receiver. Couple things to note: Neither the supplied wiring harness nor the Kenwood wiring diagram was clear that the Power Control wire from the Kenwood rear harness would need to be hooked up to the "antenna on" wire on the harness. But one quick call to Crutchfield tech support fixed that, and the tuner came on right away. One thing that bugs me slightly is how the radio is muted a couple seconds whenever you eject a cd (or ever push the eject button). Not a big deal, but neither Sony nor Pioneer do this. (Sometimes you want to eject a cd without interrupting the current mode whether tuner, USB thumbdrive, iPod, etc. (I know picky). Would be nice if Source button toggled from CD to Radio, instead of CD to AUX, -to Standby,-to Radio. (again, not a real big deal). Doesn't have a tuner scan feature. Why have most of the new car stereos dropped the SCAN feature?? I like that when traveling. However it does have best reception auto memory which will place best received stations in the six presets.

Placed order, shipped same day, received 3 days later. Everything that should be included was there, installation kit, wiring harness, instructions, ect. Installation was easy, took about 1 hour, including soldering harness adapter to radio wiring. The included installation panel matched the dashboard perfectly, looks like original equipment. I had a query regarding the harness wiring to the vehicle amp, quick call to Crutchfield confirmed I was reading the instructions correctly, no problem, again very knowledgeable staff. Radio sounds great , have loaded about 30 CD's onto a flash drive, no longer carry CD's in the car. Only minor criticism is the display, cannot read it in sunlight, not a problem unless you have T tops or open roof. Radio menu much easier to use than I expected. Have not used the radio receiver much, or the CD player, but they do work fine. I have aftermarket upgraded speakers and the whole setup sounds great, much better than the factory stuff. All in all a great deal for the price and Crutchfield are tops for service.

I am very disappointed in this product Signal is worse than my stock HU, there is this annoying fade in and out of digital to analog that sounds inhuman. Maybe people don't listen to the RADIO anymore, but I was excited about the HD stations in my area, so I'm very surprised no one talked about the radio reception until recently. I feel terribly misinformed about this radio. anything with 5 stars shouldnt have these huge issues. I guess I'm stuck with it until i find a solution Cons- bad signal- worse than stock HU Fading in and out of digital- sounds like someone playing with the sound controls when you arent doing anything except driving. takes forever to scan for the next station, and sometimes it just gives up The remote lead didn't have enough voltage to turn on my amp from this head unit, I had to splice another wire to give it more juice. Kenwood fails. Pros Good mp3 and CD sound I hate to say it, but this deck does sound great at its best. its just all that other bull I had to deal with along with the sound. I liked kenwood so much in the past, but this is terrible. I cant recommend this to anyone, but if you don't care about listening to a radio, maybe this deck could be tolerable to you. <br><br> <b>[Editor's Note: Our Tech Department states that you need to connect the antenna booster wire.]</b>

I purchased and installed the Kenwood HD545U in my 2007 Toyota Tundra which was equipped with a factory installed Delhi radio with cd changer. I previously removed the factory speakers, which were a laugh, plastic housing with 50 cent sized magnets, and replaced with Polk Audio speakers but never upgraded the radio. What a difference the Kenwood has made. I now have high fidelity. The product was delivered on time and the installation kit and instructions were accurate and easy to follow. After about a hour of preparation, putting together the wring harness and mounting the receiver in the supplied custom kit, it took approximately 45 minutes to remove the factory unit and install the Kenwood using directions provided by Crutchfield. It did take a little time to perform the programming but all is good. I now can use my ipod and usb drives with ease. Also the radio section receives many more channels than the factory unit ever did and all clear as a bell and many in HD, what a difference HD makes. I have purchased from Crutchfields in the past and have always been extremely satisfied with their pricing, delivery, and support. Great deal on a great receiver. I bought this to replace an old aftermarket sterio in my 97 toyota camry. I bought it basically to be able to plug my ipod in to listen to my music because the other stereo had no tape player or aux. The HD radio was a huge bonus and for the price i thought it was a good deal. I recieved it the day after i ordered it, it was faster than the overnight shipping said it would be. It turned out to be just what i thought. The sound quality is amazing from the radio, from my ipod, and from cd's. I love the HD radio's extra stations so if theres a commercial on one station i can switch to the HD channel. I also really like the ipod control on the faceplate, it shows you song title and artist along with the HD radio when its avalible. Having the sub preamp output was another huge bonus, it makes hooking up your sub so much easier, if you have a sub its almost a must to have it. With all of the installation accessories and master sheet provided by crutchfield it was a breeze to wire and put in, it took at the most 30 minutes. Even with my factory speakers i noticed a difference in sound quality and i love it. I would recommend it to anyone even if it means spending a little extra, its worth the money. Great stereo!!

I picked this radio based off of the options I wanted in my stereo. It has a front inputs, HD radio and sirius. My order arrived after 5 days. The instructions were clear and concise. I dropped the mounting kit(!) and it broke, but I glued it together and let it sit overnight. The install was easy except for some tough screws inside my car. Wiring the harness together was simple and took about 15 minutes. I installed sirius, I put the tuner and adapter in the glove box and hooked it up to the head unit. The radio sounds great! and I am still using my original speakers. HD sounds impressive when it kicks in ( it takes about 10-15 seconds where I live) The sirius sounds great! (FYI to see the song and artist title, there is a little button on the front of the radio that says "scrl disp") My favorite part is the front inputs. I plugged my iPod in and it read it right away and I was able to use the radio to control and search the iPod. I put some podcasts on a usb flash drive. I just plugged it in, it read the drive and I was able to search podcasts and listen to it, the best part is when you take the usb drive out, it remembers where you left off for the next time you play it. Also, the aux jack input is great for pandora radio on my phone, just plug it in and youre good to go. My only drawback so far is that the removable face plate doesnt snap right in, I have to wrestle with it to get it to stay in place.

Problem is the rail ends allowing the clip to come loose. After spending an hour trying to get it to work, just took it out and only used what came with the radio. Great price for a CD unit with HD radio, good power and reasonable sound-shaping abilities What I like: + Radio has excellent reception in regular and HD modes + Easy to define radio presets (1 click) + With a cheap optional attachment I got a rear-AUX port and hooked my iPod in that way, with no wires sticking out the front What could be improved: - Display really does wash out in bright sunlight - On/off button is small and hard to find by feel (it's not just "press the big knob"). Annoying at night, since the unit is completely unlit when it is off, and it's easy to press the "remove the face" button when trying to turn the unit on. Preset buttons are extremely small, even for a single-DIN unit - Changing bass & treble is a long trek through menus, hard to do it while driving. And once you get into the menus the unit won't ever "revert out" to normal display -- you have to find and press another button to go back up the menus just to get out I got this to replace the double-DIN factory unit in my 2002 Subaru (which had no AUX or USB input) and while I like having the new inputs plus HD radio, I guess I miss the simplicity and "adjust by feel" of the factory stereo somewhat

Besides those things this is a amazing cd player. My system sounds so much cleaner and louder now. I like all the settings and options you can do to tune your system to your ears. I would recommend this cd to a friend fo sho.

Very cool unit for the money . Like the ease of menu use for sys Q and other necessary functions. Sounds great just wish i could get more highs out of unit like my last pioneer. Unit is far easier to use than pioneer and has much better sound quality and all i listen to is radio and much of that is talk radio, cant determine how cd play is have not used it yet but my mp3 player pluged into aux an worked like a champ. Mine is hooked up to 6x9 mtx 3-way rears and sony 6-1/4 fronts in a 98 civc no amps nothing special. Love the hd radio option u cant hardly buy the add on tuner for hd ready radios for what this whole unit costs. GREAT BUY

    Great All Around Deck!

Matt J from Bossier City, LA on 12/31/2010

Another great Kenwood Stereo. I just installed this in my 01 civic and I couldnt be any happier. This stereo does it all. There arent any HD radio channels here, but th iPod controls are so much easier to use. Instead of browsing through your ENTIRE music Library you can alphabetically search each letter group, rather than having to search through all your A's and B's. And if that doesnt appeal you can still switch the controls to manual which is a deffinate plus. Overall one of the greatest things about this stereo is the sub controls, and the power control wire. Since I just bought my first sub set up (10" Alpine Type-R & Kenwood KAC-7205) this entire set-up with this stereo runs flawlessly. But dont just take my word for it, look at all the other 5 star reviews on this deck!

I purchased this receiver a few months ago and am very impressed with this product. It has all the features you could want in a car stereo and much more. Features - Ability to choose to control ipod from the ipod or the deck. You can also scroll through alphabet so you dont have to look through all your songs to find stuff. It charges your ipod when in use as well. You can choose if the radio will receive only HD, non HD, or both, this is very useful if you are in an area of bad HD signal so it keeps it from fading in and out. It displays the radio station information and the song and artist information as well and allows you to tag them to your ipod. When i first got this deck i had it for about 2 weeks and the ipod control stopped working all together. But Chrutchfield being the company they are sent me a new one before making me send the broken one back which was nice not having to wait for the mail to go there and back to before receiving the stereo. It has worked beautifully ever since I was just unlucky to get a lemon deck the first time but it happens so i don't hold it against the rating of this product. it has amazing sound and really brings out the quality even with stock speakers. I am very impresses with the quality of this product and how well the deck is made. It has all the features you want and they all work the way they are supposed to. Keep up the good work Crutchfield you have gained a lifetime customer.

Got this unit to replace the original receiver/tape unit in a 1995 Mazda B2300 pickup. The built in HD radio was a plus though it turns out in my area it's not really a factor. Installation was easy with the included tools and wiring harness. The truck had a premium sound system with a rear mounted amplifier so I also got the Scosche Factory System Integration Adapter. Had to call support once to verify what to do with the ground wires on the 3 plugs and got a quick answer. I've tried CD's and my iPod and am pleased with the overall sound and increased Bass. This unit does have a lot of features and settings you can play with and the means to access all of them takes a little reading of the manual but there's nothing very difficult to master. I do agree with several of the other reviews that the volume knob really should be knurled or have a rubber grip. It's just to slick for easy adjustments. My first purchase from Crutchfield but it's been a very positive experience.

I purchased this radio (as a birthday gift) to replace the existing Blauplunkt radio. Overall, we are very pleased. Just a few items to keep in mind if purchasing: Even though previous reviews said it was easy to install, I purchased the install card so we didn't have to futz with any nuances that may occur--every car has their day. Our car has steering wheel controls and purchased the wiring but at the install center, I had to pay extra for attaching these controls, as it wasn't included with the basic install card. So, if you have any special connections and you purchase the install, make sure you ask the Crutchfield tech if everything is covered. Regarding the radio, after leaving the install center, our stations weren't locking in and it seemed those FM stations we received with the Blaupunkt were fading in and out. And, forget picking up any HD stations; however, when we were within a 30 mile radius of Washington, DC, we were able to pick up all the HD stations. Recommend checking out www.hdradio.com for stations available in your area because the farther from the city, the probability of picking up stations is low. Another reason I purchased this particular radio was to play an MP3 player, which is NOT an ipod. Fortunately, the radio recognized the player but unfortunately, it did NOT recognize this particular mp3 software using the USB. We're going to try purchasing an auxiliary jack to see if that'll play the device.

I had a JVC radio before this purchase and I couldn't be happier. The sound is great! The only issue my husband had during the install was he didn't connect the blue and the blue stripped wires together which is the connection for the antenna. Without this connected you will have issues with respection. Once connected it was music to my ears. The only thing I wish it had was the ability to change the color to match the rest of my car but I gues I can live with that.

I made this purchase because it was the best alternative for an i-pod hook up. I was previously using a monster cable fm modulator which is ok in open country but terrible in the suburbs of chicago. I would rate the modulator 1 star. I really like the front usb connection for the i-pod. The hd radio was a very nice bonus as it adds at least 30% more radio stations to choose from. The sound quality from the cd player is better than stock also. I was never dissapointed with the stock stereo in the suburban until I installed this new head unit. I am using stock speakers except for the rear 4x10's with this unit and the sound is much better than the stock head unit. I still dont hear the rear speakers playing even with the upgraded Kicker speakers so there might be an amp in the future. if your interested in upgrading from stock... go for it. Dont second guess placing an order with Crutchfield either. Everthing you need to install is included except for solder and heat shrink tubing or whatever you will use to connect the adaptor harness to your radios harness. Qiuck and thorough customer assistance with any questions also.

THE BAD 1: The installation kit that came with my stereo didn't fit right. The manufacturers OEM faceplate had clear bits and was custom molded. In short it was very pretty. This one was solid dark metallic gray. The bottom line is that this is a cheap piece of plastic, and it looks the part. 2: After installing the stereo, it didn't pick up any stations at all. I messed around with the antenna cable, turned the power on and off, and then I picked up all the local FM stations, but they sounded like they were in mono, and playing in a coffee can, you know, the way that AM stations sound. I was getting very angry when I powered the unit off and powered it back on and it seems to be working fine now. In fact I would say that it is working exceptionally well. The sound is now absurdly clear. 3: There is such a tremendous number of menus and sub menus to crawl through it is very easy to get lost. I know, I know, Read the manual right. Good luck changing the EQ while in traffic. NOW THE GOOD STUFF. This unit sounds simply amazing. Set it up for the kind of music you listen to and this head unit will not disappoint. It's loud, it's clear, and it has treble, mid, bass, and sub bass controls. Over all I'm glad I bought it and would probably buy it again.

I really like this radio. I had my mechanic install it. The HD sounds great, haven't noticed any problem with it switching between HD & analog (haven't been out of the metro area yet though). Menus are understandable, have most of the settings where I want. I really like the displays of song/title/talk host, etc. The USB section works well. I can find my songs and podcasts with a little work. I don't like the front mount for the flash drive. It would be easy to smash it and the underlying connector if you hit it with something. I wanted a SD card slot like my last receiver had but I couldn't find any tuner with one. Probably the next best would be a USB cable from the back of the receiver.

I bought this receiver mainly to interface with my iPhone, and it works great for that. I love the fact that I can switch between interfacing directly with the iPhone or with the receiver (simple button push to switch modes). If I select a playlist on the iPhone screen I can then quickly switch to receiver control and switch songs/pause/etc with the push of a single button. The only thing I wish this receiver had was a rear USB port in addition to the front one. The display is also hard to read if the sun is shining on it. HD Radio is also nice, although it takes a second to lock in. Maybe all receivers are this way.

I unfortunately have one of the 2 ipod models that you cannot control with the ipod itself (still works great controlling through the stereo unit though) to search for songs. I recently bought a low milage 87 camry that i installed this in, which still had the factory speakers (which were horrible and fell apart in my hands when i took them out), but made them sound so much better right away. Nice Stereo for the money. Full of features, especially at this price. Installed easily, the only problem that I had was that AM did not work after I hooked it up according to the directions. I searched Crutchfield's site, and found a common problem to be an antenna amplifier needed to be connected on some vehicles. I pulled the stereo back out, connected these two wires, and I now receive good reception on all bands. Only negatives - I think the volume knob is too smooth, could use notches in it so that it could be gripped easier - very minor complaint, and as others have pointed out, the display is non existent when sunlight shines on the face, it totally disappears until you block the sun with your hand or something. I have a sunroof, and this happens more than I like, that is why I did not score this unit with 5 stars. Overall, very nice unit and I am pleased with my purchase.

The great thing about this stereo is that the HD Radio is BUILT IN! I only needed to purchase the tuner kit for Sirius radio (which is also a good price through Crutchfield). So if you are only interested in HD Radio, this radio will do it right out of the box. I just had this installed last night and it's great. I have no cons yet, except that I cannot save alerts for my favorite songs when using Sirius. I can live with this though since I can listen to anything from my iPod or CDs. Bought this unit to replace my 6 CD changer and old reciever w tape deck. The unit installed relatively easy, although I had to call Crutchfield a few times to figure out the wiring (first time I've installed something like this in a car). The unit has very nice features, such as HD Radio, USB and Aux inputs, and intuitive controls. I hate reading a manual, and I've had to do very little reading to figure out how to use this unit. The buttons are easy enough to figure out and they aren't too small. I like the different options with viewing on the display, such as title/artist, time, song name, etc. The only negative I can think of thus far is that the display is hard to read in the sun, if not impossible. The unit looks great at night, but during the day time, espec when the sun is right on the unit, you can't read it. I just finished a road trip using the unit the whole time, and I would highly recommend purchasing this unit. It sounds good with my stock speakers, but at some point I think I'll upgrade the speakers to get a richer sound. Kenwood makes excellent products from my experience, and this unit is no exception.

This is a great value unit for the price. Installation was fairly easy, although the instructions do not make it completely clear that many cars - like my Scion xA - need their antennas to be powered by the head unit in order to get good reception. Was a little frustrated until a quick Google search gave the answer. Made the proper connection and everything was perfect. I have no real nitpicks other than that. Couple tips: Make sure you apply the firmware update available on the Kenwood website, since it makes using iPod mode much smoother. Do this BEFORE you bother to set your radio presets, as the update will reset the unit and wipe them out. Make sure if you're installing the unit yourself you order a pack of crimp caps from the good folks here at Crutchfield, as the adapter wiring harnesses don't come with them. At least, my Toyota adapter didn't.

Nice clear sound and good HD reception in my area. radio has a USB port which allows direct connection of thumbdrives or MP3 players. When I first connected my gen 1 Ipod mini, the radio would not recogonize it. I then upgraded the software on the Ipod to the latest version and reconnected to the radio. It worked wonderfully then, with complete radio control of the Ipod. radio also comes with a remote control. I did not try this out since I do not see myself fumbling around with the control while driving. The only reason I did not give the radio a 5 rating is because I felt my original radio had a stronger station reception than this one.

Good value! I believe this is the most cost effective way to get HD, CD, MP3, USB, AUX in a high quality unit. I like the auto memory preset tuning. I set up the radio to only receive HD then went to FM3, did auto memory preset storage of HD stations. After that I set the radio to receive both HD and analog. I have a problem receiving AM signals also. I will try the P-conn to P-ant connection mention by a previous reviewer. My wife's minivan, '97 Mercury Villager, had a premium sound system with factory amp. I chose to bypass it because the Kenwood had a fairly powerful amp. This made my installation a bit more involved. I needed to remove interior panel on the driver side since amp was mounted near driver side tail light. The HD545U sounds fine. I am using the highest level bass boost and it kicks the factory speakers pretty good at higher volumes. I love the older Kenwood receiver in my truck. As can be expected, Crutchfield included everything I needed including detailed instructions. You can't go wrong with Kenwood and Crutchfield!

Good stereo for replacement of my high-end factory unit from an 8 year old vehicle. Reading AAC and MP3 files from data CD are a little slow on the uptake. Decent FM sensitivity, poor AM sensitivity. Buttons are a little small for medium hands, and feel fragile. Once installed, setup was a breeze. Most disappointed this does NOT support iPad via iPod adapter, even though both this site and Kenwood say it supports the latest iPods and iPhones (iPad is really just a big iPod Touch, after all). I've always been a fan of Kenwood car stereo, and this one is no exception. Would have received 5 stars but for the iPad issue.

The install was really easy as all the cables and connectors where there as well as really decent instructions. I had a problem with the wiring but one call to tech support fixed that. Now the radio is in place and working .. now I have to study the user guide which I am getting used too doing. A bit complicated in the menu's but take time to read the user guide and all will be well.

The reviews don't lie. I researched this receiver for a long time before making the purchase and found the reviews accurate. The unit is powerful and the sound is crisp. I have the stock Toyota Corolla speakers in the front and have installed JL's for the rear. The various EQ settings allow you to tailor the sound, and it also has a manual setting. The HD radio is a great improvement over the standard stereo. I had one problem which was quickly resolved by Crutchfield. After installing the unit, I could not tune in any AM stations. I called Crutchfield and the tech told me to connect the P-Conn wire with the P-antenna wire. Not sure if the instructions indicated that, or I overlooked it but after doing so, it worked perfectly. I live about sixty miles from the broadcasting area and get better reception than the original Toyota radio. Definitely a great receiver for the price! Thank you again Crutchfield, A loyal customer

I bought this because it was listed as direct fit, plus it met my other requirements: had programmable station buttons on the front since I station surf, had USB and AUX jacks, HD radio, and can play CD-Rs. It DID require modification though in my 1991 Formula - I had to grind 1/4-1/2" off the passenger side half of the rear support block in my car (this block originally supported the rear of the factory radio). It was necessary so it would clear the heat sink on the rear of the Kenwood. If you have an '82-'92 Firebird/Camaro, you will have to do this also. I love this receiver! The only minor complaint with this is you can't easily access the controls if you leave an ejected CD still in the unit since it sticks out so far. The only OTHER complaint - I wish I could install an identical HD545U in another car that I drive on a daily basis, but am limited by the fact this car has a factory sound system integrated with the Heads Up Display, steering wheel controls, and factory trunk CD changer.

After weeks of researching, comparing, and shopping around, I had settled on either this unit or a similarly configured Sony unit. I was able to compare them side by side at a local shop and I was blown away by how much better the Kenwood sounded. The amps they put in really have a lot of power. Even with stock speakers, it really improves the sound. I was shocked at how much better the built-in HD tuner is. I could pick up at least 3 times more channels that I was able to with the stock unit. The HD channels are really crisp and sound considerably better than analog. The iPod controls are intuitive and easy enough to use, although I wouldn't recommend doing anything more than picking a playlist while moving. The tagging is a really neat feature and I use it a lot more than I thought I would. My only gripes are very minor. occasionally, when switching to a channel that has both HD and analog signals, it will skip a little when switching between the two. The glare can make it a little harder to see the display and I would like it if HD channels would default the display to the clock when the station didn't have song title info. But these are really minor complaints and I would recommend it to anyone. Crutchfield service is awesome as usual.

I have had this car stereo for 2 weeks now and I love it! It is well worth reading the instruction manual all the way through because there is so much this stereo can do. I find that it is a very good value for the money. I look for excuses to drive my car and listen to the stereo. The only thing that I find annoying about the stereo is the beeping in between modes (aux, usb, HD radio, standby). Hopefully I find a way to turn off the beeping. I love the HD radio. This was my first purchase from Crutchfield and hopefully not my last. The price quoted was what I paid period. This included the installation tools and manual and the wiring harness and assembly instructions. The installation guide was specifically written for my vehicle. Instructions for swapping out the speakers were also included. The installation instructions were well written. Total installation time was a little over an hour. Crutchfield rocks!! I am Glad that I didn't purchase the stereo from a 'box store'. I saved a lot of $$$$ Cheers!

Just installed this unit last week in my 2005 4Runner to replace the stock radio with a malfunctioning CD player. The installation instructions were absolutely perfect in every detail with accurate photos for each step of the process. You need to read all the instructions for the trim kit, but everything I needed was provided and the final installation looks great. I only had one issue. After installation,I noticed that the FM reception was only so-so and the AM was barely functional. I called the Crutchfield support and the technician immediately gave me the solution, noting that the 4Runner has a powered antenna amplifier that needes to be connected to the antenna control lead from the Kenwood unit. It only took minutes to correct the problem and the unit works terrifically, much better than the OEM HU in all regards. I just returned from a road trip and the radio reception is excellent. That said, I almost exclusively used an IPOD nano and a miniature USB Memory Stick for music and podcasts. Everything works as advertised and I could not be more pleased.

Nice looking unit...ipod functionality worked as advertised. Noticed a huge improvement right away over stock radio. Biggest drawback to this unit is the FM reception. I put this unit in my 350z and the radio reception was horrible. Double checked twice that all my connections were made correctly and they were. The difference between clearly picking up a station in my stock unit versus this one was 50 miles. Even when stations were tuned in they sounded horrible (fade in/out). at one point I had only "analog" stations set and noticed no difference in reception quality. I spend a lot of time on the road so I like my FM stations. Sent this unit back to get something better.

The radio is easy to use. The screen is pretty self explanitory, I'm sure if one is familiar with car stereos would be able to figure out how to use this with out the manual, that's how easy it is to use. The sound quality is great. The HD radio does make a difference. Being able to use my 5th gen. ipod and iphone 4 with this radio really put this purchase over the top for me. This is a great head unit! The sound and features can't be beaten - especially for the price! I love the built-in HD radio receiver. It works seamlessly. The iPod/USB interface is a really nice plus. I needed a unit with a remote control and this was one of the few models on the market that had one. I replaced a Sony unit that had a remote control. It had the most frustrating user interface. You had to read the manual just to store a favorite station. The KDC-HD545U works exactly as you would expect - press and hold the memory button to store the station! :-) Other settings changes are very easily accessed through an easily accessed very intuitive menu. My only gripe with this unit is that I don't get a 'beep' feedback when using the remote. The unit is somewhat hard to see in daylight from a distance of about 5-6 feet and it would be nice if it emitted beeps as you pressed the remote buttons - that way you would at least know that it is receiving the remote signals especially when changing the volume. I would highly recommend this unit to anyone looking to upgrade to an HD receiver. Once you hear HD radio - especially AM HD radio which is easily better than analog FM - you'll never go back to analog radio. Its nice to see a company produce such a good unit with a full set of features for a change and, at such a decent price!

The sound has so much more depth it makes the old system sound like its monaural it is that big of a difference. I used the bypass cable for the amp thinking I would lose the volume but 22 watts rms puts out enough clean sound to overcome the road noise. For an inexpensive receiver it is well worth the price. My only complaint is I would like to have had one more dim display option as the dim setting is still some what bright at night.

I didn't need anything really fancy, but honestly I don't see how I could possibly need anything more than what this has to offer. Unless I wanted GPS or an elaborate subwoofer/amp setup. I think this receiver is a great value for what you get. The sound quality was a definite improvement over the stock Bose receiver. The controls at first are a bit confusing, but never left me wondering what each button does. Most of them are pretty self-explanatory. If I had any questions, the manual was great at telling me how to access certain features. Setup & adjusting the EQ are quite simple, the iPod navigation is straightforward and I also love a head unit that keeps the preset 1-6 buttons. Call me old fashioned.

What a difference HD makes. No wonder car manufactures' do not install this feature, it would put GM's XM and Sirius out of business. One can tell it is a clearer signal than FM and there is better range, reception wise (distance). The USB Port works great. I can make a tree of folders or just singles on a USB Drive, then play them in order or at random. The radio's manual points out that Kenwood has a download site for their Kenwood Music Editor Lite (No Library set up). I do not have an IPod, but I did see on the Kenwood Support Web Site that the current Firmware Update v. 1.01 is for 1) improved the playback function in IPod Control By Hand Mode 2) corrected defect of no tag information. There is a one page PDF which explains how to down load the Firmware. I updated the firmware with a USB Drive following the instructional steps and had no problems. This Kenwood KDC-HD545U radio is a great deal when purchased at Crutchfield. This was my first purchase with Crutchfield. I checked locally at two retailers and saved $210 labor/materials. The special GM Integration Adaptor for my 2004 Impala retailed locally for $100 plus and Crutchfield sells it for $40 with a radio purchase of $129 or more. Plus they included the Master Install Instructions, harness, antenna adaptor and face kit for free on a radio purchase of $129 or more. And Crutchfield shipped it for free. I love this radio!!! So right off the back let me explain the 4 Rating. It's been hot here in Detroit plus with all the humidity it's even hotter!!! So maybe that the reason for this issue cause it's only occured on hot days when I had the windows down instead of the A/C. The unit drops in sound quality quite noticeably (Volume at 26). When I turn it down for a bout 10 to 20 secs it resets itself and it's back to normal. BUT other than that it's an excellent radio!!! I have 2 MTX 10"s on an 800watt MTX mono amp connected to the sub output on the unit. It also have 2 other RCA output for Front and Rear which is quite impressive for the price. I have 2 JL Audio Tweeters with Infinity 4x6 2 way plates in the front doors and Alpine 6x9 2 ways in the rear deck. This Kenwood receiver's audio control is INCREDIBLE!!! It gives you presets for the those who don't really know how to set up your sound but for those who do it's a dream come true!!! It has 3 bass boost settings off, level 1 and level 2, High, Mid and Bass control from -8 to +8 in each range. It also has on and off controls for your subs with a seperate bass level control for them!!! Detachable face, remote, usb input, hd radio, ipod ready... what are you waiting for buy this unit!!! With the excellent recommendation from "Al" who helped me when I called Crutchfield's, I ordered this radio. My situation was with the factory head unit in a 2008 Toyota Tacoma and a Sirius receiver with FM transmitter, I was constantly having to change the FM channel because of fade out. The stock radio was horrible, might as well just turn it off if the windows are down. I told him I was on limited budget, and for less than $200, he sold me this Kenwood with the rear auxillary input (so the Sirius wouldn't have to be plugged in to the front of the radio). It arrived within 2 days. It took about 2 hours to complete the install. Pretty proud of myself, the install looked great. After turning it on, I knew I was satisfied. It brought the factory speakers to life. It was just what the truck was missing. Sirius is awesome playing through it. The only problem I encountered was forgetting to eject one of the kids CDs out of the factory head unit before removing it. LOL. Ooops. Guessing I can just hook some 12 volt power to the right leads on it to power it up to remove it. If not, I reckon I will be buying another CD, sure not going to tear the dash apart again to hook it up.

I bought this head unit to replace the stock stereo in my '96 Acura Integra. About a year ago, i had put in Infinity Kappa speakers in my car but kept the stock stereo powering them. They still got very loud, but the sound was always a little distorted with light interference noises in the background. I even had an i pod attachment that hooked into the disc changer input in the back of the unit, but once again there was always interference noise when i played my ipod. After putting in this new unit, the change in sound quality is phenomenal. The music gets louder but still sounds super clear. The bass is much more crisp and the music sounds good at all volume levels. The ipod control is very nice too, very easy to figure out after just messing with it for a little while. I did all the wiring myself and put in the unit in just a couple of hours. I'm sure it would take less time with another car, it's just that with hondas/acuras you have to start by removing your center console and take out all kinds of hidden screws and parts in a very particular order to get in the dash

It's a smooth transition but there is such a big difference in sound quality that it gets annoying. iPod Control - Love it! Front USB/Aux input - Thought I wanted front input, but after having it, want rear input. I don't like the cord hanging out in front. Display - Great display except it doesn't have a clock button. You have to scroll through your options in each source to get to the clock. With iPod, there are about 5. I find this annoying. Overall I like it.

    Excellent Radio For Ipod Control

Cajun_Injun from Griswold, CT. on 7/2/2010

I did a lot of research when looking to replace my Stock radio in my Ford F-150. I found that Kenwood Products are rated very well for reliability and features. Crutchfield made this installation a snap with detailed information that was very accurate. The radio is very easy to use as is the Ipod control feature, it also looks really good....without being gaudy and to many buttons all over the place. The sound is outstanding with plenty of power, you don't even need a big sub to get good bass. I Installed some new Pioneer speakers that made is sound even better. The HD radio is a neat feature as well. Buy this radio you will not be disappointed! And more important buy it from Crutchfield. This was my first experience with them and it won't be the last!!!

So.. this unit allows you to connect an iphone or ipod. A big problem with connecting the iphone: All the songs, come back in alphabetical order. You can get around this, by telling the headunit to operate in "ipod mode".. but then you have to do all your song/album selection & navigation on the phone.. the head unit just says IPOD MODE the whole time etc. Kind of a bummer. Otherwise.. this is a *GREAT* head unit.. sound is clear.. very easy to hookup to my 2 amps and all my speakers.. As always, the "fit and kit" was 100% on the money from Crutchfield. The 4 star review is for the head unit's iphone connectivity.. Crutchfield, of course, 5 stars :)

A great little buy. Install took about one hour, was quite easy for my 2003 Mazda Protege5. Instructions were clear and easy to understand. Only one small problem-- The install kit that came w/the unit was broken. One call to customer service and I had the replacement two days later, no problem. The built-in amp boosted my factory speakers beyond what I had w/the factory stereo. Sounds excellent. It's nice having HD radio along w/the other "amenities" and all for this price! All in all, a great purchase and a great Crutchfield experience. I now understand all the hype about how they treat customers--it's great and it's true.

Only issue I see is the navigation of the USB drive folders, not that simple. Other than that, awesome radio for the money!!!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this unit because of the built-in HD radio and ease of iPod hook-up. I have owned plenty of after-market stereos in my day but never had a Kenwood and now I don't know why. This unit is fantastic with being able to "tag" songs for later download, HD radio, front USB port, and the sound shaping is excellent, it has pre-set EQ's for different styles of listening and also has separate bass, mid, and treble, another big plus. I don't much listen to CD's anymore because I have everything on my iPod but tried one in the unit and it sounded just as great as the rest of the sources. The built-in amp puts out 22 watts RMS which sounds excellent but I'm still going to add a 4-channel amp some time in the near future to make the Polk Audio db571 speakers I also purchased really sing. I also have a Sound Ordnance BP-8 sub on backorder which I'm anxiously awaiting. I have this installed in a 97 Ford Ranger and it's given the truck a "sound" face- lift. I would highly recommend this unit especially if you're after HD radio and iPod connectivity, this Kenwood handles it Very Nice! As always, Crutchfield is wonderful to deal with. They always send extras when installing new gear and hey, who doesn't like getting something included? I always rave about Crutchfield customer service but it's true, you people are the best!!!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this from Crutchfield as a replacement for the original CD/receiver unit in my 2000 Ford Ranger, along with a pair of Infiniti speakers. The new head unit and speakers are a huge step up from the factory ones. The sound is clear, sharp, and has great punch when you crank it up. The iPod control, the HD radio, and the single CD player all work exceptionally well. The only drawback is that the controls are not very intuitive, at least for me, and especially for controlling the iPod. I have to consciously think about what I'm doing to change artists, albums, or playlists. Not exactly the best thing when you're barreling down the road. Installation was easy - I can be a klutz sometimes, but Crutchfield's instructions were spot- on. The "one size fits all" dash adaptor didn't really fit right and needed a good bit of adjustment. It has a small cubby that is perfect for holding my iPod. I got the iPod adapter cable, but it is much longer than necessary. I'm going to order a short (3" or 4") cable so I don't have a bundled-up cable dangling off my dash. I would really like to have a USB port off the back of the unit. That way I could permanently route the cable to my glovebox or wherever and not have to worry about disconnecting the iPod and putting it away every time I park to deter thieves. Problem is, almost nobody makes that feature.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I waited three weeks for this deck to come in so as to replace my broken 6 disc changer factory head unit for my 04 Mazda 3 Hatch. After receiving this head unit, I performed a little "fit and finish" work on the metal tabs included to mount into the dash adapter piece Crutchfield sent (As in most aftermarket audio installations, a dremel tool is invaluable). The dash adapter pieces and wiring harness were easy to get assembled with the supplied instructions. This head unit blows the doors off the stock one! Not only does it have HD radio, but the preamps in this thing make even factory door speakers sound incredible. Instant bass that I had no idea was available in my car. The USB in the front is awesome because I just threw a 8 GIG thumbdrive with all my new music in and it played them all with unsurpassed sound quality. Overall, this unit has highly impressed me and I have only had it two weeks. If you are looking for a good quality name brand CD/MP3 head unit upgrade, you need not look any further. As always, Crutchfield gets my business for being #1 in customer support, on the phone walk-throughs, and included installation hardware. A++ PROS: Incredible sound quality, equalizer, MP3 disc, audio AUX and USB in front for laptop or other multimedia devices, plenty of available power, low cost for high upgrade. CONS: Some people may think the display is "plane jane" appearance, i don't though.

Bought this unit to upgrade the factory radio on my 2004 Toyota Camry. Was a bit intimidated in the beginning because I have never replaced a car stereo before, but I took it as a personal challenge and it was a lot easier than I thought it would be. Therefore I saved money from not having to pay a Car Audio installer to do it. Anyway, the Crutchfield Master Sheet instructions were clear and right on the money. Had some questions on how to assemble the adapter sleeve but Crutchfield Tech. Support was great and answered all my questions. Took my time and assembled the sleeve and wiring harness with success. The whole process was a lot easier than I thought. Anyway, the radio is awesome and the sound quality is 10 TIMES BETTER than factory radio. Love that I can plug my Ipod into it and play all my tunes and Podcasts. HD radio quality is awesome as well. Love the radio and would recommend it to anyone based on cost and features, and of course quality.

Some of the features I like are: 1. USB Input for playing Ipods and or thumb drives full of your favorite tunes, 2. Removable faceplate with supplied cloth pouch,(big plus if you own a Jeep) 3. AM/FM tuner and HD Radio are great along with Multi-Casted Links to other HD stations on the same frequencies, 4. Beautiful blue color backlight on the unit which has a dimmer incorporated into the unit (would have preferred using the cars dimmer control for that but it's a small inconveinence) 5.Cd Compatibility along with pause button on #6 pre-set while playing. Also works to pause Ipods 6. Has pre-sets for your radio channels. Presets are used for different functions also depending on the source you are using. 7. Can tag HD songs for future purchase in Itunes. 8. Built in amplifier packs plenty of punch for my OEM 4 speaker system 9. the CLOCK "WILL STAY ON" as long as you choose "Manual" in "Display Settings" and not "Auto" 10. Comes with a manual... Please...Please... spend some time with it and your Nice Little Receiver in your driveway or parking spot to enjoy the many more functions of this unit so you too can custom tailor it for your liking. ENJOY Ps....This was as easy an install as I can remember. With all the supplied materials and literature for your vehicle specific application it's a win, win situation for all. So I say "THANKS" to Crutchfield and their team of dedicated people for making and keeping it that way.

This radio dose all of that. The HD works perfectly you can tell a big difference in the sound when it locks on to an HD station. After you read the manual the unit is easy to operate and adjust. the supplied remote is awsume and makes it easy to work the radio. There is a place in the menu under Display where you can dim the panel light so it is not so bright for night driving, I leave it set to dim all time and can see it fine in day time. You can adjust Bass, Trebble, Mid Range, Bass Boost, I am using factory speakers with an add on in line bazzooka sub I purchased from Crutch Field also. Must constantly hit "clock" button to get time. Good sound. CRUTCHFIELD is great with the tech advice: A bit tricky to put the steering wheel adapter in a GM, but we got it and it all works great. This is a GREAT system. Easy to install in my 2004 Dodge Ram. Took about 45 minutes and most that time was making up the wiring harness. The sound is tremendous and controls are relativity easy to use. I choose Kenwood because I live in a rural area and this receivers low sensitivity pulls in distance stations. I'm listening to stations I could never receive with my OEM radio. The USB is a really nice feature; it plays and controls an iPod - or just dump your MP3's to a thumb drive and listen to your collection that way. Also, the CD players plays regular .wav files or MP3's. Either way, plenty of ways to store and play music. This one is a good value; low price and high performance. Highly Recommend. Rob

I wish I had a little more room between the cup holder and the faceplate of the radio, but that is a flaw on the design of the car not the radio. The sound is crystal clear, my only disappointment is not enough HD stations. I can tell a difference between the HD and regular stations, but it really doesn't matter because you get great sound no matter where you are getting your music from.. IPod, cd, mp3 disc, etc. Loving the front USB input and the aux even though I don't use the aux input. This receiver was my first upgrade to my 2007 Nissan Xterra. I was looking for the best bang for my buck that included HD radio and iPod control without going to a double DIN unit, and this head unit fit the bill perfectly. Pros: -not too hard to figure out the menus/settings- it took me a while to realize that the menus changed depending on what source you were in though. -Sound quality is excellent and EQ offers plenty of control -plenty of power to drive factory speakers- upgraded speakers could use an amp -you can optimize your EQ's for different speaker sizes, a built-in feature -reception is strong Cons: -I have a 5th gen (video) iPod and control is kind of clunky through the headunit. Newer iPods (touch, classic, etc) can be set to hand control, where you pick the music using the iPod's interface instead of the headunit, but not the 5th gen for some reason. Overall: If you live in an area that broadcasts HD signals, you'll be amazed at how much more music you have available to you. This receiver is a great way to get access to all that extra music.

I was a little hesitate on purchasing an aftermarket stereo for my 06 GMC P/U. It had the factory 6 cd deck with the Bose speaker system in it. The unit quit playing CD's and I priced other factory take-outs, but what you may not know is that once you purchase a factory take ($100 to $180) you have to take it to a GM Dealership for re-programming ($75 to $100). Guess what??, if they are unable to re-program it with your vehicle VIN, your outta luck and outta $$$!. The price of this unit was under what I was about to spend on a factory deck and the reviews helped me make my choice. This unit was very easy to install with all the help from Crutchfield and accessories they sent. This stereo actually sounds 50 times better than the factory unit! I was and still am very impressed!! If your thinking of getting an aftermarket stereo for your vehicle and it has the factory Bose speakers, you WILL NOT be disappointed with this unit. You will not believe the clarity, crispness, bass, vocals, and power you will get from this stereo!!! I loaded all of my music on a thumb drive, plugged it into the unit, and was blown away at the sound! Also, The sound from you local HD radio stations is Amazing. I ordered this for the car my son drives ('96 General Motors product), the OEM unit was OK but the cassette was dead and it was time for it to go. I had previously bought another HD Kenwood and was pleased with the features and sound. Compared to Sony and Pioneer products I really wanted something better but didn't want to shell out big $ for an old car. This unit fit w/o modifications. The sound is great, HD in the Nashville area is expansive, the MP3 disks and iPod controls are terrific, folder modes/browsing. The display is large. USB & AUX up front (like mine rear for routing cable to glove-boxes but just try to find one - darn iPhones! - must say, front USB is better for thumb drives tho). The pricepoint is good. The hardware "buttoned" favorites is handy over my other Kenwood which is a tad different. I like the 'through the front' CD (no need to pizza-oven-door to pop a CD in/out). It will do AAC and WMAs as well as Bluetooth and Sat I think but we don't need that. It is a good little radio, worth waiting 3 weeks on B/O for.

I purchased the Kenwood KDC -HD545U receiver along with a pair of 6 1/2" KW KFC-1662S and a pair of 4" KW KFC-1062S speakers to replace the stock system in a 2001 Subaru Forester. Crutchfield made the experience a breeze with their customer service and all the free materials needed to do the job. I received the speakers first and had all 4 installed in less than an hour. The receiver came a couple weeks later because it was out of stock. It arrived on the exact day the company said it would. With the Master Sheet and wiring harness, I had the head unit installed in about an hour and a half. It was easy and looks like it has been there forever. Even the dash pocket that came with it looks like it was meant to be there. Thanks to some other reviews I knew the pocket was going to be somewhat lacking in quality, so I was able to put it all together without breaking any thing. One review said that items in the pocket would slip out of it. I bought a pack of non-slip adhesive pads and cut it to fit the bottom of the pocket. Problem solved. My main reason for the purchase was to play all my music on my Blackberry Curve phone. It works with both the USB and Aux ports. With the USB, control of folders and files is through the receiver. The Aux port allows control from the phone. It all works great and the sound is fantastic. I highly recommend these components to anyone looking for a great system at a great price.

Instalation was a bit bumpy (partially my fault and some on the extra parts manufacturers instructions), but the Tech advisors (Thanks everyone, especially Russ!) figured out the problems and got it going! *** to those installing in a Dodge/Chrysler: you should get the aftermarket adapter which will talk to the car's computer, but be careful, make sure you disconnect the neg. battery terminal BEFORE you do any work. I did it AFTER and when I reconnected it, it tripped the transmission computer and was off to the dealer for a reset ($$$). Also , unless you are going to hook up a Nav system that talks through the speakers or Bluetooth, hook the speaker wires up as usual, not what the adapter instructions say.*** Awesome stereo and great job by Tech support!!

I purchased this receiver to replace the factory AM/FM cassette on my '04 Mercury Sable. I had a 6 disc changer (bought from Crutchfield) that no longer works because it only worked with factory stereos but I can carry many more songs via the USB port. The sound is fantastic and the amplifier is powerful for an in-dash receiver. Installation was easy. The only difficulty I had was running the cables through the back seat. That took longer than I expected. I don't have many HD radio stations nearby but the ones I do get sound great. I don't have an iPod so I can't comment on that. Overall a great product at a great price.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this in my 2001 Nissan Maxima. The Crutchfield kit made everything very simple. I thought I'd have to replace the speakers too, but this unit makes my stock speakers sound great. I love country music, and there is no country radio in the New York area, but TWO stations (106.7 New York and 97.5 Long Island) have country on their HD2 feeds, so life is good. Note to Maxima owners, you have to REVERSE the prongs on the Crutchfield antenna adapter from the way you'd think it should go. If you don't, it sounds like you are 100 miles away and you don't get any HD stations. Once I reversed the antenna prongs, everything came in crystal clear. And as for plugging in a USB drive with MP3 files, the manual says you need an adapter (sold separately). That's nonsense; just plug in any old USB drive, and it reads the files and starts playing almost instantaneously. This is a great unit!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have a '97 Mitsubishi Montero Sport. For me, it came down to either this headunit, or the same priced JVC unit. I chose the Kenwood because of the brand name, and its 6 preamp outputs, in case I ever have enough money to get some subs haha. Anyway the new deck is great! It replaced the factory headunit and is being used with factory Infinity speakers. The overall sound quality has drastically improved, and I can now play loud music without it sounding awful, as it did before. The HD Radio is great, iPod control is awsome too. iTunes Tagging is a feature included with all HD radios, and is another bonus. The display is great and the build quality seems high. The only thing I don't like about the unit is that the power button is just below the button that releases the faceplate, so if you are still unfamiliar with the unit or you're in the dark, you can accidently press the wrong button. A note to my fellow Mitsubishi owners, Why must installation be so tough with these!?! It took me a good 2 hours to install because I had to completely take apart my dash...

EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE FROM THIS COMPANY AND HAVE BEEN SINCE MY TEEN YEARS. Thanks Crutchfield...

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this stereo to replace the OEM on my '04 Honda Odyssey. The installation was super easy with the included accessories from Crutchfield. I ordered the crimp tool plus the crimps in addition to the stereo. The stereo itself is amazing! The sound quality on OEM speakers are fantastic. The user interface and ease of use is very simple. I was surprised that there are so many HD radio stations in my area. Using the AUX and USB inputs are very easy and there is little to no processing time when inserting a CD, AUX input device, or flash drive. For the price, it's well worth it!

I picked this deck up a little while ago. It blows my old Dual deck out of the water. The sound quality it gives from non-HD radio is the best I have ever heard. The HD is amazing! I have it hooked up with 6.5" Rockford Fosgate's in each door and 4X6 Fosgates in the dash and it rocks out those speakers. I also have a P3002 amp running 420 rms pushing a 12" P3 and I love the sub-out controls! Overall I would say this is the best deck I have owned (I used to have a JVC Flip out deck that was a close second)

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed this in my '97 Chevy Blazer. The sound is a huge improvement compared to the stock radio and I haven't even upgraded my speakers yet! I found the controls and settings easy to learn. There aren't a lot of HD channels being broadcast in my area yet, but the few I get sound great and I love that many channels show the song title and artist name on the display. My ipod is a fossil, so it can't be controlled by the receiver but it works nicely through the aux input. I love that this receiver doesn't look like it belongs in some tricked out Honda Civic, the display is more stock looking and attractive in a nice, subtle way. Installation was a bit of a task, but I'm a girl without much DIY experience so I'm just pleased I was able to pull it off without breaking anything!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Awesome sound, plenty of built in features and ways to expand. The display is so nice, simple to see during night and day, not like the ones with all those crazy colors all over. Gives the car a more factory look. Love the front loading CD, and ability to take off the face. Even comes with a nice little protecting case, remote is cool too. Layout is great, simple and easy to use, again, more factory like. I didn't even bother reading the manual and I have already mastered it, so simple. You will learn this deck quick! Got some JL Audio speakers to mate up to this deck and it's just so amazing, deep bass, clear and loud highs and mids. I got a 91 Camaro by the way. So all it uses is front dash 4" speakers and rears are 6x9's. Sound is still great and no distortion. Plenty of and simple ways to customize your own taste of sound, bass etc...or just use the preset sounds. HD radio is great! A lot of people don't understand HD radio and how it works so they always complain about it. Talk with your advisor before or after you buy this deck to understand it. Also, if you don't want it to look for HD stations automatically you can turn that feature off. Dimmer is a nice feature, works well. I like it off, in other words all the way up and to me it's not any brighter then a factory display, so it doesn't bother me.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Most of the major manufacturers are releasing an HD receiver in this price range. After a thorough comparison, the Kenwood KDC-HD545U finish in a two-way tie for first. The easy to use buttons on the 545's face are what earned my money. The Kenwood KDC-HD545U is very user friendly and provided instant life to my speakers which were being held back by the factory head unit. The AM-FM tuner takes between 2-4 seconds to switch over to a digital signal. As the case for my area, the HD receiver is absolutely worth it's price. It's not just the imo mild sound improvement, but the multicast channels you receive that add value to it. The CD player works like it should as does the USB and AUX inputs. The iPod controls are very intuitive, although I wouldn't recommend searching for music in traffic. The only con I could think of is reading the text in sunshine. I have to lean in a bit to avoid the glare. Crutchfield packed a secure shipment, and provided everything I needed for the install. They have earned my future recommendation to others.

    Display Features

Detachable Face: The unit features a single front loading CD face that detaches from the chassis to deter theft. The CD player comes supplied with a soft black fabric, draw string face case to protect the detachable face when you have it off the chassis.

Fluorescent Display: The Kenwood headunit features a 13-character white backlit fluorescent display with blue button illumination.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: When the unit is in Standby mode, the face/button illumination is "keyed." In addition, while the unit is in Standby mode, you can turn the clock display on or off. When the Clock Display is turned on and the unit is in Standby mode, the Clock Display is also "keyed." Pressing and holding the source button turns the unit off completely.

Display Dimmer: The display has two brightness settings to adjust the brightness of the display according to the surrounding illumination. You can change this setting within the menu from On or Off.

Demo Mode: This unit features a Demo mode which can be turned "on" or "off" within the menu.

    Audio Section

MOSFET Amplifier: The Kenwood KDC-HD545U is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit. The power output specs for the KDC-HD545U are as follows:

    • Full Bandwidth Power: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20-20kHz, 1% THD)
    • Maximum Output Power: 50 watts x 4 channels

Rotary Volume Control: The CD receiver uses a 3-way rotary volume control that increases and decreases the volume of the stereo from 0 to 35. The rotary knob also controls other audio settings such as Balance, Fader, Bass, Mid, Treble and preset EQ settings. In addition, the rotary knob allows you to scroll through and select your music tracks when the Music Search function is activated.

Speaker Settings: The Speaker Setting function tailors the System Q Sound Control settings according to the type of speakers in your vehicle. You may select a Speaker Setting of "SP Off" (flat), "SP OEM" (for OEM factory speaker systems), "SP 6x9/6" (for systems with 6" and 6"x9" speakers), or "SP 5/4" (for systems with 4" and 5" speakers).

System Q Sound Control: Six EQ curves are preset into memory, allowing you to recall the best preset EQ curve for different types of music. Each preset has its own level settings for bass (100Hz), midrange (1kHz), and treble (10kHz). You can choose from the following preset EQ curves - Rock, Pops, Easy, Top 40, Jazz, Natural and Game.

Bass/Treble/Mid Control: The KDC-HD545U also features independent Bass, Treble and Midrange control. You can adjust each one from -8 to +8db. The bass frequency is adjusted at 100 Hz, the treble frequency is adjusted at 10 kHz and the midrange frequency is adjusted at 1 kHz.

Bass Boost: The Kenwood CD receiver also features a Bass Boost control that can be set to the following levels - LV11, LV2 or Off.

Source Tone Memory: This feature allows you to store System Q bass, middle and treble tone settings for each source (CD, Tuner, Aux, and USB).

3-Sets of Preamp Outputs: The KDC-HD545U features front, rear and subwoofer preamp outputs. The front and rear speaker preamp outputs are balance and fade adjustable. The subwoofer preamp output is non-fading. The front, rear and subwoofer preamp outputs are all fixed to the rear chassis of the headunit. The subwoofer preamp output offers the following controls:

    • Low Pass Filter: The receiver features a built-in Low Pass Filter control for the preamp-output when the output is set to Sub. You can select from 85Hz, 120Hz, 160Hz or Through (Off).
    • Subwoofer Phase: You can also adjust the phase of the subwoofer output between 180-degrees (Reverse) or 0-degrees (Normal).
    • Subwoofer Level: Once you have switched the preamp output to "subwoofer" you can independently control the subwoofer preamp output level from the CD receiver. You select levels between -15 to +15.

Volume Offset: The level of each source may be independently adjusted to prevent radical leaps in output volume when switching from one source to another. The available settings range from -8 to 0 (-8 to +8 for Aux source).

Tel Mute: The KDC-HD545U features a cell-phone mute wire (brown) in its harness that when hooked up to your car's phone system mute wire will automatically mute the receiver's audio signal when a call comes in.

Key Beep: The in-dash headunit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

    Radio Functions

Built-In HD Tuner: With its built-in HD Radio tuner, you can receive digital AM/FM broadcasts from local stations where available. HD Radio significantly improves AM/FM audio quality and reception, as well as includes information such as artist name and song titles or traffic news, viewable on the receiver's display. HD Radio Technology will deliver high-quality digital sound. AM digital will have FM-like quality in stereo (70dB SN @ 40-15kHz), while FM digital will have CD-like quality (70 dB SN @ 20-20kHz) with static free and clear reception.

Note: The unit's built-in HD Radio tuner allows analog AM/FM reception as well.

Station Text: AM/FM digital stations can offer text and data such as artist names and song titles.

Multicasting: Many HD Radio stations also offer more than one channel of programming. This service is called multicasting.

iTunes Tagging: Using the headunit's iTunes Tagging enabled HD Radio, you can tag your HD music while listening to the radio with your iPod connected. When you hear a song you enjoy on your local HD Radio station, you only have to press the headunit's control knob and the song's information will be saved to your connected iPod. The saved songs will then show up in a playlist called "Tagged" in iTunes the very next time you sync your iPod to your PC. Then you just need to click, buy, and download the song you tagged directly from the Apple iTunes Music Store.

Note: The following model iPods/iPhone support iTunes Tagging - iPod nano (3rd/4th/5th/6th), iPod classic (80/120/160GB), iPod touch (1st/2nd/3rd/4th), iPhone (2G/3G/3GS/4).

Tuner Presets: The KDC-HD545U's tuner features 3 FM banks (1, 2, 3) and 1 AM bank for storing presets. The Kenwood KDC-HD545U offers two preset modes.

    • Normal: You can store 6 presets for each AM/FM bank giving you a total of 18 FM presets and 6 AM presets.
    • Mix: You can store a mixture of 6 AM/FM presets for each AM/FM bank giving you a total of 24 AM/FM presets of any mixture.

Auto Memory Tuning: Not only does the CD receiver's tuner allow you manually enter your desired presets you can choose to have the unit automatically put stations with good reception in the memory banks automatically; this is a handy feature when traveling.

Tuning Modes: You can choose one of three tuning modes: Auto 1 (seek tuning), Auto 2 (cycles through and tunes the selected band's preset stations only with each button press), or Manual.

Note: You can setup the KDC-HD545U to search only HD Radio stations.

Direct Tuning: You can tune in a desired AM/FM radio station directly by entering the frequency number using the included remote control.

Mono Mode: This feature reduces the noise (static) when a stereo broadcast is received as monaural (for FM analog band only).

Note: AAC ID3 Tag information cannot be displayed.

Supreme Setting: When MP3 or WMA files encoded at a low bit rate (less than 96 kbps, 44.1k, 48kHz) are played, the Supreme Setting function restores their high frequencies so the sound quality is closer to files encoded at a high bit rate. The processing is optimized for the compression format and the bit rate used. When the Supreme Setting is Off, the unit plays the original sound stored in the audio file.

IR Remote Control: The KDC-HD545U comes with the RC-405 IR wireless remote control with a full numeric keypad (0-9). The remote will control Audio, CD, HD Radio, and external device functions. It is powered by a single CR2025 3V lithium-cell battery (supplied).

Attenuator: The CD receiver features an Attenuator button on the supplied remote control that turns the volume down very quickly with one touch of the button.

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The unit also features an OEM steering wheel remote control input on the rear of the unit that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with the optional PAC SWI-JACK Steering Wheel Control Interface Adapter (127SWIJACK, sold separately); or the optional Metra ASWC Steering Wheel Control Interface Adapter (120ASWC, sold separately).
