Kenwood KDC-HD552U

Enjoy your personal music collections
You can plug your iPod® or iPhone® into the front-panel USB input and enjoy easy navigation of your music library. And if you like to listen to Pandora® Internet radio with your iPhone, you'll appreciate the built-in Pandora® controls. They make it easy to browse stations, plus rate and bookmark songs from the receiver's controls. And you Android fans can take advantage of the Music Link app, which provides a variety of search and playback features when your phone is plugged into the USB input.

When you want to spin a disc, slip in a CD and enjoy this receiver's 24-bit digital-to-analog converter. It converts the raw data on your disc, including MP3 and WMA files, with greater accuracy so you hear more detailed, lifelike sound. And the convenient front-panel auxiliary input lets you plug in a Dock & Play satellite radio tuner or other devices.

Sound-shaping tools
The feeble bass and treble controls of a factory radio can't compare with this receiver's 3-band EQ, high- and low-pass filters, and selectable bass boost, along with settings that let you customize the output to fit your car's speaker setup.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Kenwood stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and this Kenwood, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

    Works great in my boat!

SkipperJ from Alpharetta, GA on 5/26/2014

Actually bought this for installation in my boat and it's working great! Love the HD radio feature, iPod/iPhone integration, etc. It sounds great, puts out sufficient power, and was easy to install. Ken wood rocks.

Pros: Great sound and features, looks cool, easy to install.

Cons: A little hard to learn the functions and navigating the menus.

    Great, just not with Android

    LincolnK from Minnesota on 5/1/2013

Great product, easy to set up and get going, it works well with my steering wheel controls, the music quality is phenomenal, I just have one major problem. The supposed "android support" is only for "Mass Storage Device" supporting devices. This means that if your Android device came with ICS or newer, it will not work. In order to get it to work, Kenwood would have to add support for "MTP" devices, which as of now, is what most manufactures choose to use. Please Kenwood fix this issue so i can easily enjoy my music.

Pros: Great Price Easy to setup Great Sound

    Cons: Android support is non-existant

Great mid-range stereo for the money some of the bells & whistles that you'd expect at a higher price.

Cons: buttons are a little small - android connection not as good as iOS

Great deck with all the options

    1999 Volkswagen Passat
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is the 3rd deck I have purchased from Crutchfield and each one has been supported with exactly what I needed, when I needed it. This Kenwood was my youngest son's first car stereo and he followed the wiring harness instructions without any problems. After that we pulled the old deck out of the dashboard, plugged in the adapter and we instantly had sound. He was so amazed it was that easy. He was also surprised at how much better his speakers sounded with this new deck. I had told him they would sound better, but he didn't believe me until he heard it for himself.

Pros: Built-in HD receiver Easy to understand controls Front panel auxilary / USB connectors Detachable face Easy to follow instructions from Crutchfield

Cons: Direct sunlight can make it difficult (if not impossible) to see the display (minor inconvenience)

    Great Deck For The Money!!!

Metal Hammer from Grand Rapids, MI on 1/28/2013

    1997 Oldsmobile Bravada
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Have had the deck in my '97 Bravada for 3 weeks now. No major complaints so far. Some little annoyances such as; the display disappears in direct sunlight, and the Kenwood music player app on my Galaxy2 isn't being recognized by the deck. Other than that, no complaints. I am loving that even though the deck doesn't play the music on my phone, I have over 2300 songs on a 16 gig memory stick (it's an HP 16 gig and only protrudes about 5/8" from the faceplate, so it's less likely to get broken or snag on something). I am running the sound through Polk Audio 6.5" 2-ways in the doors, and Polk Audio 4"x6" plates in the dash. While the current setup is a dramatic step up from the stock system it replaced, I am surprised by the somewhat lackluster volume level. I get some clipping at far less than full volume with bass boost and loudness off, and hpf set at 150 hertz. This is a little disconcerting as I am sure that the amp is clipping too soon. This will be a moot point in the near future though, because another set of speakers for the rear doors, a six channel amp to run them all, and a sub box and amp will be going in over the course of the next few months. In conclusion, I would highly recommend this unit for someone who doesn't need the extra bells and whistles of some of the higher priced head units on the market. I've owned Kenwood car audio in the past, and knew that if the need for aftermarket equipment ever arose again, that Kenwood would be on my shortlist.

Pros: Intelligent layout and design. USB stick works great as a music library. High and low pass filters, and subwoofer controls built in. Front, rear, and subwoofer rca outputs. Price point is right on for this deck!

Cons: Display disappears in direct sunlight. Amp seems to clip a little too soon. Doesn't recognize the Kenwood music player app on my Galaxy2.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It is hard to beat an in-dash unit that has HD radio, iPod/iPhone control with Pandora, Android support, flash drive support and an aux input for this price. Easy to setup and use and was a perfect purchase for my 17 year old daughters birthday. My only complaint is the Android support is pretty weak and with either a software or firmware upgrade could be a big selling point for all of the Android users out there in a Apple world.

Pros: Price. HD radio, Ipod/iPhone control, Pandora contol (iPod/iPhone only), Android support, flash drive support.

Cons: Android support is pretty weak and needs major improvement.

Great radio for the price. Wanted a radio that was easy to set up and operate for the wife's car. She's happy, so I'm happy. The after-market kit is not the best, but the radio looks and sound great. The lighting is not too bright for night driving. Would have liked the clock to show while the car is running and the radio off, but it's not a big deal.

Pros: Sounds great and easy to program

    Cons: None

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I wanted to look at other stereos after not really liking the Clarion I got for my wife's car. I also didn't want to spend a ton of money, but something that sounded decent and could play USB devices. After getting this stereo, I'm really glad I did and will probably look to Kenwood for my next one. Setup was fairly easy and self-evident, I didn't have to look at the manual except for one thing (see cons), and it sounds good with the factory speakers (although those will go soon). You have a lot more control over the sound than the Clarion had

Pros: Plays USBs, decent looking face and easy to set up. Sounds pretty good for a relatively cheap stereo and even with factory speakers.

Cons: You have to fix the USB device so that there are not more than 255 files/folder. This is annoying, and almost caused me to send it back as I realized it was playing only the first 200+ songs of my 1800 file USB device. You'd think by this day/age that reading an unlimited sized USB device was possible. However, I did go back, read the manual and adjust my USB device correspondingly, and it works fine. The random function works relatively good, but not completely perfect.

I needed a radio to replace the OEM. This was a good swap that will let me expand my system later with amps and better speakers. Controls are intuitive of you've ever used the early iPods. Sound was far better than factory.

Cons: Display washes out in direct sun.

I received this item as a birthday present 2 weeks ago and I finally installed it a few days ago. I must say this was the first time I ever installed a car stereo and I was hesitate at first, but after I removed the instrument cluster bezel and disconnected the wires to the old radio I was a little neverous..Even though I had everything I needed to installed the new stereo Thanks to Crutchfield making sure I had all the accesories needed for a successful installation. After reading all the direction and finally getting a better understanding i was able to complete the installation.. I'm enjoying my new stereo and I read some of the reviews about the clock not displaying and maybe it was by accident, but my clock is displayed.. I am truly enjoying my new stereo and if anyone is looking to purchase a new stereo this item would be a great investment for an after market radio.. The usb port is a bonus for listening to my pandora music... If you are deciding on a stereo to purchase please consider this one you won't go wrong.. Make sure you purchase the cable Crutchfield recomend for easy installation...

Pros: affordable, great sound, great product

Cons: I wish Kenwood would have included a hard case for the detachable plate instead of a pouch..

Sounds amazing compared to the factory unit. With the USB connection I can put over 60GB of music on a flash drive and listen to music for weeks straight if I wanted to. Much easier and less cumbersome than a bunch of CD's. With the HD radio I have discovered over twenty five new stations in my area that I never realized existed before, too cool! I have bought nothing but Kenwood radios over the years and this unit is an incredible value with a ton of features. With everything included to install this unit, mounting box, direct fit wiring harnesses, radio removal tools and detailed instructions and FREE shipping! The only way it would've been easier is if they came by and installed it for me. I'll be upgrading all the speakers real soon.

Pros: Value, features, Kenwood reputation and quality, Crutchfield service and included installation items, free shipping.

Cons: The remote could have been a little bigger but that's nothing, otherwise no cons.

This is my 4th Kenwood reciever I have bought from Crutchfield over the last few years and it's another good one.I bought my used Volvo a month ago and the previous owner had installed a Pioneer with all the changing lights.I thought it sounded ok but was very confusing to use.I knew from previous experience with the Kenwoods that they were easy to use and I was right. This reciever was easy to install and not so complicated to navigate.I don't want flashing lights, just a good, easy working reciever. The cd player sounds great and I already have another HD reciever in my truck,so I'm used to the great sound.I am hooked on Kenwood and Crutchfield.

Pros: USB reader for flash drives...even displays the file name I typed in on my laptop. Plenty of power for Chevy Silverado stock speakers.

Cons: Radio Memory buttons too small for easy use. A remote for this radio is silly...and it doesn't even work well from the front passenger seat because it needs to be almost directly in front of the radio to work.

This was a nice radio for the price. HD radio does sound cleaner than analog FM radio. Radio sensitivity was good. It's got all the features you would need. The tone settings are stored for each source, a nice feature. You can load up a USB thumb drive and play MP3's for days. And of course, Crutchfield provided great instructions and the pocket needed to install in our camry for free. Installation was a breeze.

Pros: Inexpensive, good sound, USB and Aux inputs,

Cons: No AM radio, Manual could have been more descriptive.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this unit to replace OEM Infinity system in a Dodge Intrepid. The controls are very intuitive, which is important, as you are supposed to be looking at the road. Easy to switch between varied inputs, I use the all. I love the varied present EQs, along with the bass boost, etc. Makes is very easy to contour the sound response to what you want. I have never had HD radio before, and I must admit, I didn't know what the fuss was about, until I listened... I am glad I got an HD unit now. All in all, excellent unit, easy to use and after installation, I really didn't realize how much my very old stereo had declined. As usual, with Crutchfield, all the instructions and hardware made installation a breeze.

    Pros: Intuitive controls, sharp display

Cons: Buttons are a bit small, but that's on all units...

    nice unit

    Discoverer from RI on 7/27/2012

    2007 Honda Civic EX
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Nice unit for the money. HD reception is a treat (yes, the improvement is quite noticeable.), when available. A fairly clean looking design, if you prefer to avoid teen-glitz (as I do). A quick read through the manual is about all the orientation necessary. Once used to the interface approach, it's no problem. At least the interface approach is CONSISTENT, indicative of good interface design. The many features of these modern radio designs necessitate more control(s) than traditional radios. This is a pretty good design.

Pros: straight-forward (within the notion of modern interface designs) consistent interface approach

Cons: Manual tuning requires going into the Settings to change the 'scan' setting to 'Manual', rather than auto ... no big deal, once used to the notion.

DANGEROUS! Poor design for a car stereo

loosedrag from Mobile AL on 7/5/2012

    2001 Chevrolet Silverado 2500/3500
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I selected this radio because I wanted an HD radio that also played cds and would interface with my mp3 player. I bought it along with four new speakers to replace the 10+ year old factory stereo in my '01 Silverado crew cab. The first thing I realized is that I couldn't use the knob to change channels. The knob is designed to control all the functions on the radio except select stations. For that, you have to go to the two push-buttons below the knob. The knob will allow you to select 3 station seek modes: all presets, all available stations, or manual. And all you have to do to select any of these presets is to punch the knob, read the screen, twist the dial, punch the knob, twist the dial... Perfect if I'm sitting still in a chair. Horrible if I'm in a moving vehicle. Second thing I realized is that the glare from the screen is so bad I can't see the display. The round plastic face gathers ALL the light from ALL the windows so long as there's ANY light coming in from outside. In short, in daylight you can't see the screen to figure out what the heck you're doing. I need a stereo I can work while I'm driving. This one is flat out dangerous. Also: no mute button. Even though this stereo sounds great, I consider that secondary to safe operation. This radio is simply unsafe to operate in my opinion, requiring lengthy distracted menu searches on a hard-to-read screen. Unacceptable for a car stereo. I give it two stars instead of one because it sounds good.

Pros: good sound easy to install in my '01 Silverado

Cons: Poor visibility of display in my chevy truck: gathers huge glare from all windows. No ability to manually tune the radio via the knob: must enter "manual seek mode" thru a complex menu on a hard-to-read display screen. Does not "easily connect to my ipod". I connected my ipod to the input jack and it does nothing. Front-mounted USB port doesn't seem to even charge my phone.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am very happy with this receiver. Input Options Excellent array of options. AUX (for iPod etc) is there of course. I like the USB option. Plug in a thumb drive and you get all the music on it. HD radio seems to be working, though I wouldn't complain if the owners manual gave a better idea of how HD is supposed to work. Pandora? Whatever. Sound MUCH more musical and compelling than the factory radio. It's quite dramatic. If you listen to bumper-buzzing rap your opinion might differ. Human Interface. Decent at the most important: select with minimum of driving distraction. Visuals: Too flashy. Too gawdy. Too many unnecessary lights. Too much distracting showiness when selecting inputs. Better than the Alpine I bought ten years ago (designed to appeal to 9-year-old-boys) but still, let's hope the industry realizes that most of their customers are adults.

    Pros: Excellent Input selection

Cons: Visuals are too gawdy. Manual needs to better describe how HD works.

Easy to install and great sound.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am very satisfied with my KDC-HD552U. My biggest fear before it arrived was the wire harness. What's there to worry about? Nothing. Straight forward instructions were easy to follow. The whole installation start to finish was 2 hours, maybe a bit more for preparation time. I wouldn't give it a second thought of changing or upgrading a car head unit. I am considering upgrading my speakers since they are factory speakers. One other worry I had was the finished look after it was installed. I couldn't be happier. It looks as if a pro installed it. Thanks Crutchfield!

Pros: I really like the HD feature for the radio and love the Kenwood Music Control App I use for my Android phone to play the songs on my phone back. All the control is from the head unit.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I replaced my factory HU in my Saturn L200 with this Kenwood unit. Very happy with the choice. I wanted a more modern unit and this Kenwood has delivered bigtime. It was a snap to install with the free GM wire harness and dash kit from Crutchfield. The features on this Kenwood are way cool and allow you to use an MP3 player or an I phone or flash drive to import portable music. The adjustment settings take a little trial and error to get your music just right with the differrent sources but its a very adjustable unit. I also like the bass boost feature as no music is recorded the same and Radio stations always transmit at different power levels. The HD radio should be built in all future units. You can definetly notice a better quality and i managd to get 7 or 8 different stations I saved to the FM2 memory. I also replaced my factory speakers and matched this unit with the Kenwood performance series components front and rear. Amazing jams with no amp. I was also going to add a sub, but after using for a week I am holding off on that for now. I love this Kenwood and matter of fact so does my wife, she is now hijacking my car just to listen to her music. If you're on the fence on a new unit, you will love this Kenwood. It's the right price, has all the features you want, and the power and sound quality is top notch. Pair that with Crutchfield's excelent customer service and advisors and you can't go wrong. Buy it people! Thanks again Crutchfield, Dan

Pros: User friendly, great sound quality, adjustable to your tastes, Crutchfield service

Cons: None after 1 week of use

Purchased radio to replace a stock radio in my old car. More radio than the car needed so it was easy to please me, but it is a nice radio and I like the HD radio feature as well as the USB and mini phone jack inputs.

Fairly easy to use given the multiple functions available. Directions are clearer than many making them easy to follow, understand, and remember. The remote is also more useful than others I've had: key functions, easy to understand and use, convenient size and lay out if buttons.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this head unit myself about a month ago and was extremely pleased by how easy to install it was and had everything right at my fingertips while driving. I just recently bought and installed 2 12" rockford fosgate subs in my trunk and the head ubit has a subwoofer setting and hook up through the back and was super simple to install and tune. My system now turns heads inside and out of my car with a simple speaker rewire

Pros: Great sound quality, easy to install, affordable, tuning capabilities are immense, easy acess for ipod or mp3 player,

Cons: I only have 1 car to put it in

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought my 2001 Silverado new in September of 2000 and had the stock deck up until today. I finally decided to go ahead and update the deck after all these's about time! I am actually a tech head so being without an iPod capable deck without all the bells and whistles was driving me nuts. This deck has everything I wanted and then some. It is very user intuitive and all the features and functions are really easy to use and setup. I could not recommend this deck higher unless you need blue tooth, but honestly I don't answer the phone while I am driving anyway (it interrupts your music and is not cool!) I listen to all kinds of music from Metallica to Bluegrass...lot's of Bluegrass (I play the banjo, yep that's right, banjo..that's how I roll) Buy it you;ll like it

Pros: Easy to use, excellent sound quality.

    Cons: None

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Replaced factory CD radio with this unit, primarily because I wanted to be able to listen to music, podcasts, and Pandora all while charging my Iphone. This thing does that great from any audio source on your iphone/pod and probably pad. I also wanted to try out HD radio eventhough it seems to be going the way of HDDVD and betamax. The iWhatever functionality met all of my expectations. I was enjoying Pandora while replacing the crappy factory speakers one at a time. The unit has the Pandora skip function, plus the Thumbs up and down as well has play/pause. You can have the display show pretty much any information from the channel to the artist/album/etc.... I listen to podcasts using the Downcast app and it played through as well. Didn't try controling it from the unit, just the iPhone. Got one HD radio signal that I could find it sounded nice. The only thing I don't like is having to memorize what sequence of buttons and knob turns to access the different sources/channels/functions/audio settings on this dude. Guess I really am getting older. I'll just get some drugstore reading glasses and go to town figuring things out. This review is very fresh. I need to spend more time with it, however, as soon as I finished up all of the installs, my wife and a couple of children abscounded with the car for the midnight showing of that Famine Recreation movie that is all the rage. Hope it does get lifted, cause she doesn't know the face comes off for safe keeping

Pros: iWhatever(Phone,Pod, Pad, etc) support, aux input, HD radio (for what it is worth)

Cons: My knob/button deficiencys, you young kids probably have an issue, but I like a volume knob and a frequency/multifunction knob. At least the factory unit had the right.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Sound is about what you would expect for a deck in this price range (based on my factory speakers so not a totally fair evaluation) . Very easy to operate. The display LED's are a very nice blue. The face is removable, which I don't think is made clear in the specs and is very tight fitting, which may over time will hopefully become easier to install. The control face is very light weight and easy to carry, but has a slightly cheap feel, which is again expected for a sub $150.00 unit. HD unit has very good reception. I could pick up stations in Anza Borrego Desert many miles from the broadcast towers. Pandora receiver is excellent. I would certainly recommend this unit for the price.

Pros: Pandora and HD Radio + Iphone and CD for under $150.00

Cons: No Bluetooth, but nothing else in this price range yet has it either

The free Kenwood Music Control App for Android can be downloaded onto your Android smartphone from the Android Market place. Your Android smartphone must be running Android OS 2.2 or later. Once the app is downloaded and has a chance to organize all the stored music on your Android smartphone, you can connect your Android smartphone to the Kenwood CD receiver via USB (your compatible Android smartphone must be recognized as a USB mass storage class device; not compatible with MTP protocol). The Kenwood Music Control app offers the following Android supported functions.

    • Song Management: Music stored in your Android smartphone can be navigated from the Kenwood CD receiver. Songs can be easily selected by searching for a Song title, Artist name, Album label, or Genre.
    • Song Information Display: Song information such as Artist name, Song title, and Album label are displayed on the connected Kenwood CD receiver.

    Audio Section

24 Bit D/A Converter: The Kenwood KDC-HD552U utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior CD sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The Kenwood KDC-HD552U is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit. The power output specs for the KDC-HD552U are as follows:

    • Full Bandwidth Power: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20-20kHz, 1% THD)
    • Maximum Output Power: 50 watts x 4 channels

3-Way Rotary Volume Control: The CD receiver uses a 3-way rotary volume control that increases and decreases the volume of the stereo from 0 to 35. The rotary knob also controls other audio settings such as Balance, Fader, Bass, Mid, Treble and preset EQ settings. In addition, the rotary knob allows you to scroll through and select your music tracks when the Music Search function is activated.

Volume Offset: The level of each source may be independently adjusted to prevent radical leaps in output volume when switching from one source to another. The available settings range from -8 to 0 (-8 to +8 for Aux source).

Speaker Settings: The Speaker Setting function tailors the System Q Sound Control settings according to the type of speakers in your vehicle. You may select a Speaker Setting of 'SP-Off' (flat/off), 'SP-OEM' (for OEM factory speaker systems), 'SP-6x9/6' (for systems with 6" and 6"x9" speakers), or 'SP-5/4' (for systems with 4" and 5" speakers).

Preset EQ: Eight EQ curves are preset into memory, allowing you to recall the best preset EQ curve for different types of music. Each preset has its own level settings for bass (100Hz), midrange (1kHz), and treble (12.5kHz). You can choose from the following preset EQ curves - Rock, Pops, Easy, Top 40, Jazz, Natural, Game, and User.

Bass Boost: In addition, The Kenwood CD receiver features a Bass Boost control that can be set to the following levels (BB1, BB2 or Off).

Loudness: This function enhances low and high frequencies to make the sound clearer lower volumes. There are 3 levels (LV1, LV2, or Off).

Source Tone Memory: This feature allows you to store System Q bass, middle and treble tone settings for each source (CD, AM/FM, Aux, USB, iPod, and Pandora).

Supreme Setting: When MP3 or WMA files encoded at a low bit rate (less than 96 kbps, 44.1k, 48kHz) are played, the Supreme Setting function restores their high frequencies so the sound quality is closer to files encoded at a high bit rate. The processing is optimized for the compression format and the bit rate used. When the Supreme Setting is Off, the unit plays the original sound stored in the audio file.

6ch/2.5V Preamp Outputs: The KDC-HD552U features front, rear and subwoofer 2.5-volt preamp outputs. The front and rear speaker preamp outputs are balance and fade adjustable. The subwoofer preamp output is non-fading. The front, rear, and subwoofer preamp outputs are fixed to the rear chassis of the head unit.

Front & Rear High-Pass Filter: The KDC-HD552U features an independent High-Pass Crossover for the front & rear channels when your front & rear speakers are connected by the unit's speaker-outputs or preamp-outputs. You can adjust the high-pass crossover from "Through", 100, 120, or 150 Hz. The "Through" selection is a full-range setting. This feature is very helpful when you have smaller-type speakers in the front and larger-type speakers installed in the rear of the vehicle.

Subwoofer Controls: The Kenwood KDC-HD552U offers the following subwoofer controls, when you have the unit's subwoofer preamp output activated.

    • Low Pass Filter: The receiver features a built-in Low Pass Filter control for the preamp-output, when the output is set to Subwoofer. You can select from 85 Hz, 120 Hz, 160 Hz, or off.
    • Subwoofer Phase: You can adjust the phase of the subwoofer output between 180-degrees (Reverse) or 0-degrees (Normal).
    • Subwoofer Level: Once the Subwoofer preamp output is activated, you can independently control the subwoofer preamp output level (-15 to +15) from the CD receiver.

Tel Mute: The KDC-HD552U features a cell-phone mute wire (tan) in its harness that when hooked up to your car's phone system mute wire will automatically mute the receiver's audio signal when a call comes in.

Key Beep: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

    Display Features

Detachable Face: The Kenwood KDC-HD552U features a single front loading CD face that detaches from the chassis to deter theft. The head unit includes a cloth pouch for storing the face-plate when detached. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.

Note: An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can also be purchased for this unit.

Fluorescent Display: The Kenwood head unit features a single-line, 13-character, bluish-white backlit fluorescent display.

Illumination Dimmer: The head unit's fluorescent display has two dimmers settings to adjust the brightness of the display according to the surrounding illumination. You can switch the display dimmer setting On or Off. The head unit's button illumination has an independent dimmer setting from the display which lets you set the button illumination dimmer to LVL1, LVL2, or Off. The Kenwood logo and eject button remain the same brightness.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: When the unit is in Standby mode, the face and button illumination is "keyed." When the Clock Display is turned on and the unit is in Standby mode, the Clock Display is also "keyed." Pressing and holding the source button turns the unit off completely.

Demo Mode: This unit features a Demo mode which can be turned On or Off within the menu.

    Remote Control

Wireless Remote Control: The KDC-HD552U comes with an IR remote control (RC-405) for wireless operation of the head unit. The remote will control Audio, CD, USB, and Tuner functions. It is powered by a single CR2025 3V lithium-cell battery (supplied).

    • Numeric Keypad: The wireless remote control features a numeric keypad (0-9) which allows direct track access of your music tracks & files (from CD or USB), as well as AM/FM presets.
    • Attenuator: The CD receiver features an Attenuator button on the supplied remote control that turns the volume down very quickly with one touch of the button.

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input wire (blue/yellow) within the included wiring harness that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately).
