You can stay within your budget and still enjoy some nice perks with Kenwood's KDC-148 CD receiver. Not only will you get a strong built-in amplifier that delivers plenty of clean power, but you can also shape the sound with a 3-band equalizer and a potent bass boost. And there's a remote control for quick volume and system adjustments.
The receiver's well-designed control panel features a handy dial that gives you instant access to all major functions, with a bright 11-digit fluorescent display for song and system information. You can play your prerecorded and recordable CDs, even discs filled with MP3 or WMA music files. "Search" and "Return" buttons let you zip through your MP3 and WMA files, so you can find the song you want in a flash. If you've got a portable music player, this receiver features an handy illuminated auxiliary input.
Adding an amp?
A set of preamp outputs allows easy connection to an outboard amplifier. If you're adding a subwoofer, you can switch the outputs to sub mode, activating a low-pass filter and level adjustment so you can control the bass from the front seat.

good quality for the price
The sound is great and the display is pretty glare-resistant in bright sunlight. The AUX in function works as expected and the sound quality through it is perfect. The ability to play MP3 discs, AUX and all the power for this price is pretty sweet. My big complaint is that it's too much of a pain getting to simple functions. To adjust the bass you click the knob twice, rotate over three notches, click the knob, rotate to what you want, and then you have to exit out by clicking the back button 4 times or holding it for 2 seconds. Is this a bank vault? It's just too hard when songs vary and I like being able to adjust my sound easily, on the fly. There are built in EQs, which are handy, but they are just as deep in the "knob maze".
Pros: Sound, price, looks.
Cons: It's too difficult to make simple sound changes.
Simply wanted a basic unit with AUX input to replace my wife's factory unit and this guy has been stellar. Very simple to use and hook up! Definitely recommend this!
Great product. Speedy delivery. I'll be back
We purchased this unit to replace an older Kenwood unit that had been damaged. It looks cooler than the previous model, sounds great, and was an easy drop-in replacement due to Kenwood's consistency with their connections, etc, so I am very happy with it.
its a very good model at a very good price, i got it refurbished, and its brand new, you can't even tell its refurbished. with crutchfields step-by-step, instructions it was easy and the sound is easily 3 or 4 times better. overal a great buy.
I've not had the greatest of luck with refurbished products. But so far this radio has more than exceeded my expectations. The install was surprisingly painless and quick (took about an hour for a complete novice like myself). The sound quality is easily 4 times better than my factory radio -at about 1/4 of the price! I think if you're looking for a cost effective (rather than 'cheap') radio with great sound and easy installation, this one would be a solid choice.
Im not sure what Jerry was referring to on the radio setup. When you power it up it asks you if you want to remove it from demo mode and to press the volume knob if you do, pretty simple. Great design very easy to use, good power, and perfect for someone with an aftermarket subwoofer setup. Wonderful product!
When I buy a radio and install it, I expect it to start off being a radio and that it will play music. If it has other features they can be adjusted to make the radio sound better. The freaking designers at Kenwood decided the settings were more important and it takes three buttons, pushed in the proper sequence, to turn the thing they designed into a radio! I had installed and adjusted my Kenwood but decided to reset it just before I left on a long trip. The radio would not play and I could not remember the proper sequence of buttons to push nor do it while driving so I had no radio for over 100 miles. As a graduate engineer with experience in electrical and electronic systems, I have to ask "Why would anyone design a radio like this"? I haven't had it long enough to evaluate performance.
Good radio, easy to install, sounds good. I like the remote for ease while driving. Good buy for the $$$
Very happy with this unit. Installation was a piece of cake. In 30 minutes I was up and running. Awesome sound from this Kenwood, especially at this price. As usual, Cruthfield service and shipping was top notch!
I replaced my 10-year old Clarion receiver, for this one. Because i wanted the AUX. The sound quality of this receiver is so much better, i love it!
Just switched my factory radio and 6 cd changer out of a 2002 Ford Explorer Sport for this unit and I must say I love it. For the price, I'm impressed with its functionality and features. I thought I would miss my 6 cd changer but I can easily play mp3's now from my mp3 player. Besides I was really sick and tired of cd's getting stuck in my cd player. Apparently the Pioneer factory 6 cd changers are nortoriously known for this happening. Anyway, I'm extremely happy with the quality of the stereo for the price!
Great stereo for the money!
this is the second time in 8 years I bought a stereo for my toyota truck and this time whent just as I expected A+ I hightly recomend this company quality products and a very professtional support team I will recomend them to everyone and will buy again
This receiver works perfect in my installation. I replaced a stock 1995 isuzu trooper system. This receiver is high quality sound with just essential extras. Easy to install and easy to use. I think this is a very good system for the money spent !
This radio replaced the manufacturer's CD / Tape / Receiver in a 1999 Volvo V70. The unit: Specifically, I was looking for the front-panel Aux In function--I was tired of the cassette/converter arrangement, as the tape player kept spitting it out. I was not looking for HD radio, nor souped-up super sound involving new speakers or pre-amp outputs. The price is right, the receiver works well enough, picking up the stations in our mountainous region, and it sounds great! I think the EQ functions where you can align the output with your car's speakers probably makes the difference. You'll have to study the manual to get used to the audio controls, which all start with a button- push on the volume knob. It takes just a little getting used to. Installation: I did not have to modify or notch the car's dash. Here's the tip: after you slide out the old double-height radio, install this receiver _before_ you install the pocket. You can angle the sleeve deep into the dash and then pull it forward into the dash where the old receiver sat. It's snug and the new receiver slides in from the front. You'll be glad for the extra hand-room to handle the wires and plugs. Remember to feed them through the sleeve to the back of the receiver (don't forget the antenna plug). Then install the 'pocket' spacer below the receiver.

Detachable Face: The Kenwood KDC-148 features a single front loading CD face that detaches from the chassis to deter theft. The head unit includes a cloth pouch for storing the face-plate when detached.
Note: An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can also be purchased for this unit.
Fluorescent Display: The Kenwood head unit features an 11-character blue backlit fluorescent display with red button illumination.
Display Illumination/Clock Display: When the unit is in Standby mode, the face and button illumination is "keyed." When the Clock Display is turned on and the unit is in Standby mode, the Clock Display is also "keyed." Pressing and holding the source button turns the unit off completely.
Display Dimmer: The display has two brightness settings to adjust the brightness of the display according to the surrounding illumination. You can change this setting within the menu from On or Off.
Demo Mode: This unit features a Demo mode which can be turned On or Off within the menu.
24 Bit D/A Converter: The Kenwood KDC-148 utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior CD sound quality.
MOSFET Amplifier: The Kenwood KDC-148 is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit. The power output specs for the KDC-148 are as follows:
Rotary Volume Control: The CD receiver uses a rotary volume control that increases and decreases the volume of the stereo from 0 to 35. The rotary knob also controls other audio settings such as Balance, Fader, Bass, Mid, Treble and preset EQ settings. In addition, the rotary knob allows you to scroll through and select your music tracks when the Music Search function is activated.
Volume Offset: The level of each source may be independently adjusted to prevent radical leaps in output volume when switching from one source to another. The available settings range from -8 to 0 (-8 to +8 for Aux source).
Speaker Settings: The Speaker Setting function tailors the System Q Sound Control settings according to the type of speakers in your vehicle. You may select a Speaker Setting of 'SP-Off' (flat/off), 'SP-OEM' (for OEM factory speaker systems), 'SP-6x9/6' (for systems with 6" and 6"x9" speakers), or 'SP-5/4' (for systems with 4" and 5" speakers).
System Q Sound Control: Eight EQ curves are preset into memory, allowing you to recall the best preset EQ curve for different types of music. Each preset has its own level settings for bass (100Hz), midrange (1kHz), and treble (10kHz). You can choose from the following preset EQ curves - Rock, Pops, Easy, Top 40, Jazz, Natural, Game, and User.
Bass/Treble/Mid Control: The System Q's User Mode features independent Bass (100 Hz), Treble (10 kHz) and Midrange (1 kHz) control from - 8 to +8 dB.
Bass Boost: In addition, The Kenwood CD receiver features a Bass Boost control that can be set to the following levels - LV1, LV2 or Off.
Source Tone Memory: This feature allows you to store System Q bass, middle and treble tone settings for each source (CD, Tuner, and Aux).
Supreme Setting: When MP3 or WMA files encoded at a low bit rate (less than 96 kbps, 44.1k, 48kHz) are played, the Supreme Setting function restores their high frequencies so the sound quality is closer to files encoded at a high bit rate. The processing is optimized for the compression format and the bit rate used. When the Supreme Setting is Off, the unit plays the original sound stored in the audio file.
Selectable Preamp Output: The KDC-148 features a preamp output that you can adjust from a full-range rear speaker preamp output to a low-pass subwoofer preamp output.
Subwoofer Controls: The Kenwood KDC-148 offers the following subwoofer controls, when you have the unit's subwoofer preamp output activated.
Tel Mute: The KDC-148 features a cell-phone mute wire (brown) in its harness that when hooked up to your car's phone system mute wire will automatically mute the receiver's audio signal when a call comes in.
Key Beep: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.
AM/FM Tuner: The Kenwood KDC-148 features a built-in AM/FM tuner. You can choose one of three tuning modes: Auto 1 (seek tuning), Auto 2 (cycles through and tunes the selected band's preset stations only with each button press), or Manual.
Tuner Presets: The KDC-148's tuner features 3 FM banks (1, 2, 3) and 1 AM bank for storing presets. The Kenwood KDC-148 offers two preset modes.
Auto Memory Tuning: Not only does the CD receiver's tuner allow you manually enter your desired presets you can choose to have the unit automatically put stations with good reception in the memory banks automatically; this is a handy feature when traveling.
Disc Compatibility: The unit features a single disc player that will playback CD-Audio, CD-Text, and finalized CD-R/CD-RW audio discs.
MP3/WMA Playback: The KDC-148 can play MP3 (8-320 kbps) and WMA (32-192 kbps) files recorded on CD-R and CD-RW discs in ISO9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, Romeo, and Long file name formats. Each disc can have a maximum of 8 directory levels, 50 folders, and 255 files per folder (512 maximum number of files and folders). During MP3/WMA playback, the unit displays any recorded ID3 Tag (ver. 1.x/2.x) and WMA Tag information - up to 60 characters.
Text Scroll: The KDC-148 will display CD text or Audio file text. You can set the text scrolling feature to two different modes (Auto or Manual) to scroll longer titles across the screen.
