Music for less

Kenwood's KDC-158U CD receiver offers a lot of ways to listen to your music in an affordable car stereo. You can go old school with AM/FM radio, throw in a CD, or use the receiver's front-panel USB port to access and control the music stored on your iPhone® or Android® phone. With your iPhone 4, 4S, or 5, you'll also have control over iHeartRadio® and Pandora® Internet radio stations.

And if you have MP3, WMA, or WAV music files on a thumb drive, the USB port can handle those too. Here's a cool feature from Kenwood — Drive Change allows you to connect a memory card reader or USB hub to the Kenwood's USB input and select music from up to five memory cards or USB flash drives.

Solid sound

Kenwood also built impressive amplification into this receiver, so you'll notice an improvement in the sound of your factory or aftermarket speakers. Select one of the eight preset EQ settings, or you can use the 3-band equalizer to adjust the tone for your separate sources. The low-pass frequency filter and phase control adjusts the bass going to your subwoofer, so you can maximize performance. You can enhance the sound of compressed MP3 and WMA audio files with the Sound Reconstruction feature.

iPod/smartphone note: If you're going to use your iPod or smartphone with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for compatibility information.

Will never buy kenwood again. i got the product. it felt cheap and plastic compared to the oem bmw radio. Installed it, and it was fine for over a year. After the warranty period, it died. Waste of money and time. In addition, the random playlist was pretty awful. Kept on playing the same set of songs over and over, while ignoring most of the other songs on my usb drive.

    Pros: cheap price

    Cons: cheap quality.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This Stereo provides excellent value for your money. Kenwood is already well know for quality products, for the price this stereo can't be beat. I previously purchased this as a replacement for a broken factory installed Honda stereo. My car was recently broken into and the stereo was stolen. I went right back to Crutchfield, and was glad to see that they still had it in stock!

Pros: excellent price includes detachable face plate, aux. and usb inputs, ihear radio and cd player for your old-school discs. Easy to install and looks great!

    Cons: none

This unit is a great value! I bought the KDC-158U so that I could use either CD's or a thumb drive. The FM tuner works really well. I haven't used the AM tuner. The CD player works well with standard CD's. All of my MP3 music is on a thumb drive so I can't comment on how well it handles MP3,etc. of a CD. CD/USB controls such as play/pause, random and repeat are multifunction with the tuner preset buttons. These control displays are small and can be hard to see. To get the most out of the thumb drive you need to use the Kenwood Music Editor Light which is available for free on their web site. This will build a music database file that interacts well with the head unit including remembering what you were listening to when you turn the unit off. Unfortunately the search function is rather clunky due to the limited display space on the unit. It is not something you want to be trying to do and drive at the same time. Colors are NOT changeable on this unit. As seen in the picture, the controls are red and the display is black with white letters. There is a brightness control and a dim on/off control, but they are both buried in the setup menus. When using CD's or the USB interface, the display settings can be changed between Artist/Album/Song/Song details, i.e. track & time played/Clock. The face plate is removable, but there is no storage case for it. I have not tried to use this with a smart phone. Sound quality is very good. There are multiple loudness options that are

Pros: USB interface Display brightness control

Cons: Difficult to find specific music on the thumb drive Need to use the Kenwood Music Editor Light software to get the most out of your thumb drive.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great headunit, a little bit higher priced than it should be without Bluetooth. Nice sound quality out of head unit and relatively easy to use. No real need for the included remote on this unit. Stereo definitely has emphasis on a fuller sound even from ipod, and is crisp and clear. An excellent upgrade to a factory headunit in many cases. Unit definitely has a very cheap look and feel to it, definitely looks like a no name cheap radio with a cheap plastic "pill bottle top" for a volume knob. I must say that there is no dimmer wire hookup for this stereo which poor. There is a dimmer that you can set manually but once again no dimmer wire. Also there is no way to turn off the inputs that you never use therefore you always have to scroll thru Pandora, and etc. The dedicated ipod button is an absolute waste and I wonder why they did this.

Pros: Great full sound quality, nice controls, great ipod integration.

Cons: No Dimmer wire, cheap look and feel, no customization of source menu.

    Great Radio

RDW from New Palestine, Indiana on 3/29/2015

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this to replace the original radio in my 2000 New Beetle. Wow what a fantastic improvement. The sound quality is like night and day. The red backlight buttons go well with the red backlighted buttons in the Beetle. Using the Crutchfield adapter cable, faceplate and antenna adapter made the fit a breeze.

Pros: More RMS power than other units at the same price. User interface is straight forward; no unnecessary flash. I like the large volume control knob. I kept the original speakers and they sound great with the extra power from this unit. Played Pandora from my iphone through the USB port and it sounded great. Display options allow showing the time, album name or track name on CD. Lots of Audio options on setting your own Bass Mid or Treble or using pre-determined EQ settings.

Cons: Buttons are small so using with gloves is out of the question. Manual's installation instructions are very minimal but the ones from Crutchfield were extra helpful. Use the PWR ON wire to power the amplified antenna adapter. The wire labelled ANT.PWR is not used in this unit.

I am very happy with the Kenwood KDC-158U. For a few dollars more than an entry level replacement unit it offers many versatile options. I have been a loyal Kenwood buyer for many years and their build quality has remained consistently high. Kenwood has also maintained higher RMS levels on output than competitors and it shows in the sound quality. As always, read the manual for operating instructions. Not rocket science, fairly intuitive for basic operation. Preset EQ's are good and the 3 band EQ for the user is also a plus.

Pros: Excellent price, quality build and rock solid output.

    Cons: None

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this looking for a simple replacement for my broken factory CD player. Compared to the other stereos I found in stores this has way more "bang for the buck." I love the looks and all the options I have to play my music. It sounds great and I'm only using pioneer 6 1/2" speakers that replaced the stock speakers. The only complaints I have is that 1) I can't change the color for the background or display, but I knew this when I ordered it and that is a very minor detail compared to what you get and 2) there are a lot more options to mess with to fine tune for your own taste of music. It took me a little while to figure out where I wanted the bass, treble....etc. But I also haven't bought an aftermarket stereo in 20 yrs, and it's still definitely worth the time it took to figure it out. If you're looking for a quality stereo with a limited budget, this is definitely worth the money.

Pros: Great price and sound, lots of input options, looks awesome in the dash.

Cons: Can't change color and lots of options for newbies or someone that hasn't dealt with an aftermarket stereo in a long time.

    Great choice

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Sounds surprisingly better than the Toyota factory radio with keeping the factory speakers. It looks good. Since I don't have steering wheel controls, the one down side is that the buttons to change the band (AM/FM1, FM2, FM3) and the preset channels (1,2,3...) are very small. So, I need to actually look at the radio a little longer to get the right button than I did with the big buttons on the factory radio. That could be a distraction while driving.

Pros: Value, sound quality, appearance, number of presets for radio channels (18 FM/6 AM).

Cons: Small buttons for radio band (AM/FM1, FM2, FM3) and the preset channels (1,2,3...)

I have always had great experience with Kenwood products. The install was easy, I was able to use the wiring plug from the previous Kenwood deck. The auxiliary input slowed me to use my mp3 player or phone to play music. I cannot comment on the iPod features, as I don't own one. Good features for the price, it doesn't have a lot of bells and whistles, but at this price that its to be expected.

Pros: Simple to use. Plugged right in to old Kenwood plug from previous deck saving me time while installing.

Cons: None for a radio at this price point.

Recieved my receiver in 3 days of ordering. Product arrived in good condtion and all the parts required were present. Put all the material together per the instructions and the component slipped into the vehicle easily with not problems. Sound is fine for an old car and the radio works well. Only additonal item that may have been good to have had were the electrical connectors that I had to go to the hardware store to purchase. if they could get small ones to connect wires with and send them with the unit that would be great.

Pros: Easy to put together and instructions complete
