Our take on the Kenwood KDC-355U

The first thing you'll notice about Kenwood's KDC-355U CD receiver is its looks. The controls are well laid out, the display is easy to read, and the eye-catching variable color illumination lets you adjust the button color to match your dash. But that's only part of the story with this budget-friendly car stereo. From checking out a new CD, listening to your iPod® or iPhone® through the convenient front-panel USB input, or rocking out to Pandora® Internet radio, you've got plenty of options for musical entertainment. You can even control the music on your Android phone with the help of Kenwood's Music Link app, or add a SiriusXM tuner to enjoy exceptional programming and coast-to-coast reception.

The sound of quality music

Add to that Kenwood's legendary sound quality. The KDC-355U receiver sends digital data from your iPod or CD through its 24-bit digital-to-analog converter, so you'll notice that your music sounds signficantly better, with more details and depth. You'll notice the additional power that this receiver offers compared to most factory radios, and you'll also enjoy more control over your sound with this Kenwood's 3-band EQ, high- and low-pass filters, and selectable bass boost.

You can match the color of this Kenwood's controls to your dash illumination.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought two, one for me and one for my 2 Teenage daughter's car. the installation to my truck and their Corolla was easy with the kits. The setup of it was very natural to select options and preset stations. The morphing color change on the display is a hit with my girls. The sound is better than what came out of the vehicles, but using the same speakers and all, its hard to say it was great. For the price, very much worth it and I would buy the same again.

Pros: Simplicity, style, sound quality, value

Cons: need to go through layers of menus to change settings, but that is just the way the current style is now.

i was able to pick one of these up for a lesser price as refurbished. it looked brand new when i opened it up and works like brand new. the discount was well worth it. i love how the lights on it change colors and i love the usb/ipod and aux hook ups. i like that it can also play cd's cause i can listen to my boyfriends latest creations. there are so many different settings and ways to search for music and it is also easy to control with the wireless remote that comes with it. with all the pre amp inputs in the back of the unit i know i can always upgrade and add to it later and i wont have to buy a whole new head unit and wiring. so far i have never been let down by Kenwood.

Pros: cool, colorful, many options and settings, aux and ipod/usb, cd player, amp ready

I have a 99 mustang gt that was in need of an upgrade in the sound dept. I decided to go with kenwood based on their quality and price and ease of instruction. I am not disappointed. Fit was a breeze with install kit and also the extra pocket to store my phone in is handy. Sound is excellent. Will upgrade speakers in the future. Everything works as it should. I defiantly recommend this product!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Had no problems with my ancient Sienna van radio, but I use it for travel and wanted to use flash media/MP3 connectivity. Installation was great, particularly since I had a problem understanding installation and I got thru to a tech rep on Memorial day. What! Yep, I spoke with a tech that cleared up the confusion during a national holiday. Anyway, I love the sound quality with flash/mp3. Radio reception is very good, but not quite as good as I expected. I may have to play with settings some though. Interface can be a bit of a challenge, but I'm learning it and will not be an issue. Overall, a great purchase from what appears to be a great company. Thank you!

    Pros: Overall Quality of Product

    Cons: None so far.

    Great Deck

    2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Although I did do quite a bit of comparison shopping before making the purchase, this unit has met and exceeded all my expectations. Kenwood has always made powerful headunits and this one is no exception. I have very limited space in this application and need to drive the hi's and mid's off the headunit but there are 3 sets of pre outs for expansion of which I'll probably only use the sub set. Kenwood's RMS power rating is significantly higher than comparable manufacturers and it shows in sound quality. I have premium OEM 6 speakers and they just came to life with this deck, they sound like aftermarket speakers now. There was a time when I would only buy Kenwood and after some other brand purchases over the years, I'm securely back in the Kenwood fold. The variable color feature is very nice and easy to change and it allows for a perfect color match. The ipod control has worked with every ipod I have connected to it even my ancient 30G Video ipod. The styling is cool but conservative enough that it doesn't stand out in a ridiculous way from the interior as many aftermarket unit do. Its not one of those overly busy designs that looks as if a 13 year old drew it up in study hall, which for me is a big plus.

Pros: Everything, completely satisfied and worth more than it costs

Cons: Only thing I can think of and this is very minor is that there is no attenuation button on the deck, only on remote

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very partial to Pioneer receivers, but since they do not make a Sirius Ready deck under $145 anymore I decided to go with the Kenwood KDC-355U. This receiver handles all of the basic functions someone updating their vehicle from a stock deck to an aftermarket needs. I am a big SiriusXM user, don't care for HD Radio (seems to be pointless), and I have found this receiver integrates very well with the tuner adapter. I would've like to see the display being capable of showing the artist and title of song, but instead you have only one option at a time for the display mode (i.e. Artist Name, Song Title, Station, etc.). One point that surprised me is that the sound quality is very good, I have Infinity components in the front and it segregates the lows and high between the mids and tweeters very well. All in all a good receiver for the price.

Pros: Sound Quality Sirius Radio Integration Easy to Use Over 20 colors to choose from while matching stock dash lighting

Cons: Display screen color has weird purple tint Display cant accommodate a lot of text

    2004 Chrysler Crossfire
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Replaced the factory stereo in my crossfire with this. So far it has great sound quality and is pretty easy to use. Works wonderfully with the car's amp and sounds like I put a lot more work into the sound system than I did. The loudness and bass enhancement on the unit make a big difference in the sound quality but don't drown out the vocal ranges like some other stereos. The menus are a bit better laid out than some aftermarket alternatives but still confusing at some times. A definite plus is the ability to install the optional satellite receiver and control it through this unit eliminating the clutter of a seperate control stuck to your dash. Overall very happy with the stereo and would consider another if I had to replace one in another of my vehicles.

Pros: Adjustable color lets you match interior lights. Good sound quality. 6 pre-amp outs. Support for satellite radio built in.

Cons: Some of the menus are a bit annoying to use and some buttons are a little small. Display color not adjustable just the button colors, still looks good but would be nice to be able to adjust everything. Lack of a built in HD Radio tuner that is standard on some cheaper stereos.

The unit supports playback of MP3 (8-320 kbps) and WMA (32-192 kbps) music files stored on a compatible USB memory device formatted with FAT16 or FAT32 file system. Your USB device should only have a maximum of 8 folder layers, 255 folders, and 255 files per folder - with a maximum of 65,025 files and folders. USB portable audio players that can be charged via USB will be charged when plugged into the CD receiver's USB port (max. 1A), and the vehicle's ignition switch is set to ACC or On.

Note: You cannot connect a USB device via a USB hub or Multi-Card Reader to this unit.

Music Control for Android Smartphone: The Kenwood Music Control app for Android organizes your Android smartphone's music, while providing quick and easy search capability from the Kenwood CD receiver. The free Kenwood Music Control App for Android can be downloaded onto your Android smartphone from the Google Play App Store. Your Android smartphone must be running Android OS Froyo or Gingerbread. Once the app is downloaded and has a chance to organize all the stored music on your Android smartphone, you can connect your Android smartphone to the Kenwood CD receiver via USB (your compatible Android smartphone must be recognized as a USB mass storage class device; not compatible with MTP protocol). The Kenwood Music Control app offers the following Android supported functions.

    • Song Management: Music stored in your Android smartphone can be navigated from the Kenwood CD receiver. Songs can be easily selected by searching for a Song title, Artist name, Album label, or Genre.
    • Song Information Display: Song information such as Artist name, Song title, and Album label are displayed on the connected Kenwood CD receiver.
    • Mood Playlist: Playlists can be created by classifying songs into categories by type of mood. Songs are analyzed and classified into the following categories of moods - High Energy (Active/Powerful/Core), Acoustic (Detailed/Simple/Smooth/Easy), Standard (Dynamic/Rockin/Vivid), Stylistic (Cool/Urban/Trance)
    • Intro Skip: This function allows you to choose and listen to only the hook-lines of songs stored in your Android smartphone.
Note: When the Kenwood Music Control app is first downloaded it will require some time to populate all the music, so we suggest doing this overnight.

Music Files Format Supported by Music Control app for Android:

Codec Extension Bit Rate Sampling Frequency
AAC .aac, m4a up to 160 kbps 8-48 kHz
    MP3 .mp3 8-320 kbps n/a
    PCM/WAV .wav 8-/16-bit n/a

Music Editor Compatible: The Kenwood KDC-355U supports the PC application, Kenwood Music Editor Lite (ver.1.1.0). When you playback audio files that have been stored on your USB (MSC) device using Kenwood Music Editor Lite through this unit, you can search a file by title, album, or artist name using the head unit's Music Search function. • Off: Disables the selection of the Aux source.

    iPod/iPhone Control

    Audio Section

24 Bit D/A Converter: The Kenwood KDC-355U utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The Kenwood KDC-355U is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit. The power output specs for the KDC-355U are as follows:

    • Full Bandwidth Power: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20-20kHz, 1% THD)
    • Maximum Output Power: 50 watts x 4 channels

6ch/2.5V Preamp Outputs: The KDC-355U features front, rear and subwoofer 2.5-volt preamp outputs. The front and rear speaker preamp outputs are balance and fade adjustable. The subwoofer preamp output is non-fading. The front, rear, and subwoofer preamp outputs are fixed to the rear chassis of the head unit.

Front & Rear High-Pass Filter: The KDC-355U features a High-Pass Crossover for the front & rear channels when your front & rear speakers are connected by the unit's speaker-outputs or preamp-outputs. You can adjust the high-pass crossover from "Through", 100, 120, or 150 Hz. The "Through" selection is a full-range setting.

Subwoofer Controls: The Kenwood KDC-355U offers the following subwoofer controls, when you are using unit's subwoofer preamp output.

    • Low Pass Filter: The receiver features a built-in Low Pass Filter control for the preamp-output, when the output is set to Subwoofer. You can select from 85 Hz, 120 Hz, 160 Hz, or off.
    • Subwoofer Phase: You can adjust the phase of the subwoofer output between 180-degrees (Reverse) or 0-degrees (Normal).
    • Subwoofer Level: Once the Subwoofer preamp output is activated, you can independently control the subwoofer preamp output level (-15 to +15) from the CD receiver.

Speaker Settings: The Speaker Setting function tailors the head unit's audio settings according to the type of speakers in your vehicle. You may select a Speaker Setting of 'SP-Off' (flat/off), 'SP-OEM' (for OEM factory speaker systems), 'SP-6x9/6' (for systems with 6" and 6"x9" speakers), or 'SP-5/4' (for systems with 4" and 5" speakers).

Preset EQ: Eight EQ curves are preset into memory, allowing you to recall the best preset EQ curve for different types of music. Each preset has its own level settings for bass (100Hz), midrange (1kHz), and treble (12.5kHz). You can choose from the following preset EQ curves - Rock, Pops, Easy, Top 40, Jazz, Natural, Game, and User.

Note: You can store bass, middle and treble tone settings for each source (CD, AM/FM, Aux, USB, iPod, and Pandora).

Sound Enhancements: The head unit provides further sound enhancements for your car audio system.

    • Bass Boost: The Kenwood CD receiver features a Bass Boost control that can be set to the following levels (BB1, BB2, BB3, or Off).
    • Loudness: This function enhances low and high frequencies to make the sound clearer lower volumes. There are 3 levels (LV1, LV2, or Off).
    • Supreme Setting: When MP3 or WMA files encoded at a low bit rate (less than 96 kbps, 44.1k, 48kHz) are played, the Supreme Setting function restores their high frequencies so the sound quality is closer to files encoded at a high bit rate. The processing is optimized for the compression format and the bit rate used. When the Supreme Setting is Off, the unit plays the original sound stored in the audio file

Volume Offset: The level of each source may be independently adjusted to prevent radical leaps in output volume when switching from one source to another. The available settings range from -8 to 0 (-8 to +8 for Aux source).

Key Beep: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.
