Overview

Our take on the Kenwood Excelon KDC-X395

Connect your player to the receiver's front-panel USB input, then press the "iPod" button to the right of the main control knob to access your player. Kenwood makes it so easy to navigate your tracks and playlists — dedicated "Search" and "Return" keys limit the need to work through menus when you're looking for a specific song.

Kenwood Excelon car stereos offer strong performance with the assurance of a 2-year warranty. The KDC-X395 CD receiver is the junior member of the Excelon lineup, but it includes features and functionality designed for avid car audio fans, including a front-panel USB input, high-voltage preamp outputs, and other options for system expansion.

KDC-X395

Ready to go with your iPod®

Connect your player to the receiver's front-panel USB input, then press the "iPod" button to the right of the main control knob to access your player. Kenwood makes it so easy to navigate your tracks and playlists — dedicated "Search" and "Return" keys limit the need to work through menus when you're looking for a specific song.

You can also switch quickly to "passenger mode" to control your iPod or iPhone® from the device, useful if you're listening to streaming content like Internet radio stations. Once your iPod's connected, this Kenwood uses its own digital-to-analog converter to turn digital files into music, so you'll hear cleaner sound with less noise.

Plenty of entertainment options

The front-panel auxiliary input offers an instant connection for a satellite radio or another sound source. You can play all kinds of CDs, even discs that you've loaded with MP3 and WMA files. You can add a Kenwood HD Radio™ tuner or satellite radio to experience the best in radio. Kenwood's optional Bluetooth® adapter gives you the added safety of hands-free calling with compatible phones — just touch a button to answer a call and keep your hands on the wheel while you talk.

System building

rear panel

If you're adding outboard amps, you'll appreciate the clean signal from the three sets of 4-volt preamp outputs. The System E's crossover offers high- and low-pass filters, so you can trim low bass out of your speakers and adjust the character of your bass.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Kenwood stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and this Kenwood, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

Got this on a close out. Cant beat Kenwood quality and the 2 yr warranty on the Excelon models. Very easy to install in my 1998 Honda Accord, had it done in a couple hours with the wiring matching up perfectly. Great sound! The Aux input works great with an Android phone for music and so does the USB input. Definantly recommend this unit.

Pros: 2 yr warranty, USB and Front AUX input. 3 RCA's 1 sub and 2 standard.

    Cons: No switchable illumination

    Great.... At first..... Then quit

The head unit looks nice, feels nice, and worked great for a few months. Then, the other day, it randomly shut off and won't turn on. It isn't the fuses because they weren't blown (changed them to be safe), checked all of my wiring, and it still won't work.

    Pros: Cheap, works ok

    Cons: Broke in 6 months.

This was an awesome head unit except it had trouble reading the USB. Finally, today, it couldn't read the USB and when I reset it, it won't turn back on.. so no music... very very bad! My buddy has a brand new kenwood that's not working also.. I think I'm going to find a different brand..

Pros: Great sound and easy to use

Bought this as a scratch and dent item for my 2000 trail blazer. The item came in mint condition, I saw nothing wrong with it and was a great value. Definitely looks nice and is easy to use.

Pros: Has spot for ipod and usb drive.

Cons: Cannot play all my mp3 on it, but this is more than likely the same issue with all stereos and the way some of my mp3 might be formatted, still looking into it.

Great head-unit, has plenty of power to drive mids and highs, plenty of pre-outs for amps. Lots of setting to tailor bass output to your liking. Has crossover for front and rear speakers, subwoofer level control. Way more features than can be mentioned here. I am definitely impressed with this receiver, especially at this price point. Worth checking out for your daily driver.

Pros: Many settings to tailor your sound, plenty of built in power for most mids and highs, great for the money

    Cons: so far no cons,

I've installed Alpines and Sonys for the same price and the Kenwood beats them hands down. The RMS power is slightly higher and the peak is slightly lower. For those of you that don't know what that means, in simple terms, RMS is average loudness and peak is little spikes in volume. Personally, I'd rather have higher average loudness for overall fullness. The EQ options on this unit are much more customizable than the equivalent competition as well. No presets, which is a good thing, cuz every sound situation is different and needs to be dialed in by you to your liking. The illuminated aux and usb ports is key for night time patching. Also, the little door over the inputs is way better than the rubber plugs that competitors offer. Pretty well built, not the strongest feeling buttons, but I don't suspect any issues. If you're spending $100 on a unit, I'd highly recommend the kenwood.

Pros: Illuminated USB and AUX ports. Swivel door on inputs. Easy to use

Cons: No hard-case for faceplate. Dimming within unit only, no wire to hook up to car. Buttons could be stronger, but they aren't weak.

    Kenwood Excelon KDC-X395 terrible sound

ryank from wilkes-barre, PA on 1/26/2013

Biggest waste of my time. I did everything exactly how the instructions said and had no power or sound. Installing this was way harder then it should have been. All the mounting pieces barely fit and i had to do things differently than the instructions said just to get it to mount properly. I then had a guy who puts stereos in cars for a living check it out. He said everything was good and should work. I tried again by powering it from the ignition wire of my car since this was the only way i could get it to come on. After everything was working i tried playing a CD and the radio, and it had terrible sound. I called customer service and they told me to adjust the GMOS. So i did. Again the sound quality was terrible no matter what volume i had it on. I then tried customer service again and ran through everything to make sure i did everything right. (customer service also had me do a few things that were completely opposite of the directions). With my third try the sound was still terrible. (My factory stereo had amazing sound quality). So I'm returning this and buying a better stereo for the same price. I'm also not surprised that the Kenwood KDC X595 is discontinued and also how many people have already returned this stereo.

    Pros: NOTHING.

Cons: Everything about it. Extremely small buttons too. Not worth the price

I love the kenwood products, this is probably the 5th head unit I have purchased from Crutchfield, You can't beat the price and installation accessories make it easy to install with simple hand tools. The installation sheet makes it easy (a factory manual helps)

Pros: I thought the single knob would make it difficult but its so easy to tune and adjust the settings the way you want.

Cons: only wish it had a dimmer feature to attach to the factory wiring but it's not excessively bright or distracting at night.

Even An Old Guy Can Install this Unit!

    KEITH on 1/18/2013

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I finished the install of this unit this afternoon and was blown away by the fact that it not only worked but worked great! I installed 8 track deck units and speakers in my dad's business in the 70's. I haven't done one since and was completely sure I would blow up my factory Bose system in my 2003 Suburban. Now the truck is ready to be put to pasture as a work truck around my gentleman's horse ranch on the weekends so I figured what the heck, I don't need a radio to pick up lumber from Home Depot! So the unit came in last night along with the Crux module. I opened it up and read the instructions. Now for a young guy all this stuff may have seemed simple but for an old coot it looked pretty daunting. And the instructions from the Crux box required taking off the reading glasses and putting the eye ball on the sheet. But I made it through (my wife brought me her sewing magnifying glass) and I wired that harness up. Struggled a little getting the old unit out simply because I forgot about reaching in behind the unit and stretching the wires up so I could get to the leads. A little more hand strength would have come in handy. Anyway, got it out, hooked up the harness and put the negative cable back on the battery. Turned the key and the darn thing worked! Not only did it work it sounded awesome while it was still hanging out of the dash! Buttoned it all up and took it for a spin. 100x better sound than the old unit. Not bad being 40 years out of practice! Buy it!

Pros: I had to call Customer Service (AJ) and ask him why I didn't have a matching orange wire on my Kenwood harness. He didn't even try to make me feel stupid! He listened to my other dumb questions and patiently answered them. After I talked to AJ I felt empowered to finish the harness and finish the install. Thanks AJ!

Cons: I have not figured out why my Galaxy will not play Pandora through the USB port. My iPhone works great. Probably operator error. No other issues!

    Best bang for the buck!

    2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is the 3rd Kenwood reciever that I have owned and the second KDC-X395. The most recent application i installed was in my 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the upgraded factory Infinity system. Install was easy on this, but previous installed one in my 2000 Cadillac Escalade, and the install sheet help ALOT!. Unlike the Escalade with the Bose setup, the Jeep did not required bypassing the amp or using an interface, so it bolted right in. With the factory speakers and amp in place, the sound already was much better! I like the 3 amp outputs there which really help build my system. I didnt get too crazy with the most recent one in the Jeep only adding a single 12" sub with a 750w amp. The sub combined with the factory amp and speakers sounds AMAZING! this is the best sounding system ive had in a vehicle... not the loudest, but the best sounding. I had a much bigger setup in the 2000 Escalade which i used an interface (bought through Crutchfield) with 2 12" subs pushed by a 1200w amp and 2 additional 6x9's puched by a 250 watt amp, with still an additional output for another amp! Comparable to the other Kenwood reciever i had, this one is much more user friendly, and the Ipod interface works great! I love this headunit, which is why i bought it twice for 2 different vehicles and have recommended it to friends looking for great sound on a budget. For the price and the additional stuff Crutchfield provides, its the best deal out there!

Pros: Great value for the price. User friendly with great Ipod interface. 3 amp outputs.

Cons: Not as "flashy" as others (single color display).

It's wasn't really hard to install it hooked up to my amp and sub and speakers and controls them very nicely. Looks nice but I wish I had got one with more than one color. And the instal kit it comes with looks very nice and fits perfectly.

Pros: Sounds great, has plenty of sound features, plays from iPhone while charging, you can use music app while plugged in or you can use the decks controls. I never installed a deck or radio and I did this by myself just fine.

Cons: Only lights up blue, the text could be easier to read

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The cd changer in my original radio of my 2001 Nissan Xterra decided to stop working so I decided to replace it. I wasn't looking for anything special and have heard all good things about Crutchfield so I decided to give it a shot. I haven't installed a radio for 15 plus years but the kit and instructions that Crutchfield supplied were top notch. The radio itself was exactly what I was looking for. I wanted a radio with a cd player, but having the usb and aux in on this radio has made the deal all that much better. I'm not a huge audio guy but like to crank the tunes once in a while. This Kenwood puts out some decent sound through my factory speakers. I based my purchase on previous reviews of this radio and so far I've been extremely satisfied. I would definately recommend and purchase from Crutchfield again if the need arises. The install went smooth, the fit and finish of the radio looks extremely clean. Overall between the service and selection from Crutchfield, the radio, and the installation process I am extremely satisfied. I normally do not do reviews for products I purchase online but felt this experience should be noted!

Pros: USB and ipod connectivity. Excellent power and sound. Clean nice looking finished installation. Radio has the features I was looking for at a very good price.

Cons: None thus far. I'm completely satisfied!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I ordinarily lack the patience, skill, and mindset to take on do it yourself jobs, but I can honestly say that Crutchfield made this experience simple and fun. Installing the receiver, and 4 speakers took me 2.5 hours and would've been much faster had I not been working outside in the dark in the dead of winter! Everything sounds fantastic. I have the EQ set to one of the automatic settings and it suits my needs perfectly. I really like this receiver, and it works well with my IPhone. Navigating music on the IPhone through the receiver is a chore, but there is a setting where you navigate through the phone itself. The buttons on the receiver are a little small and it is a bit complicated to navigate, but with time, I will get it.

Pros: Ease of installation. Great sound.

Cons: Buttons are small. Confusing navigation.

I love it and I love Crutchfield!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

While I think Kenwood has always been a top notch audio company,I believe in my opinion this design could have been more user friendly. That being siad I picked it,so I'm to blame for any "flaws" I did not foresee. I'm speaking ONLY of the size of the buttons that are cramped on the far left side. They are extremely small and hard to use while driving. If I have to take my eyes off the road to look for more than a second or two, then its too long.A second "knob" type utility like the Volume/function knob would have been easier to use,and keep your fingers on to select useage. Overall the unit looks great! The sound is great considering the Max power and RMS ratings. I put this headunit in a 2003 Ranger Edge, and it fit perfectly THANKS to CRUTCHFIELD! Dont judge your purchase on my one "gripe". Just being honest, but for the buck its a good buy.

Just put this radio into an 04 ford explorer. Bought this unit the day after Christmas and was delivered to my door the next afternoon. All of the directions were to the point and very easy to read. The unit does everything that you would expect and more. I now have a Kenwood amp and 2 12" subs in a box in the trunk connected to this radio. Installation was a breeze. I think i spent more time fixing the fuse holder attached to the amp then installing the radio. Splicing existing wires with the new radio didn't take 15 minutes. Not a bad thing to say about the radio, the subs, or the amp. Everything went perfectly!! I would recommend this radio to anyone. My favorite part about Crutchfield products is the directions and assistance they give all their customers from the get-go. I love this radio!!

Pros: Easy installation, excellent directions, looks BA, louder than anticipated, 6 channel was a perfect fit for my system.

Crutchfield offered the perfect solution that met every criteria my daughter had for her perfect car audio system. The Excelon KDC-X395 has Bluetooth, USB interface for the i-phone, CD player and digital FM/AM reciever. Fantastic price for all the features.

Great Head Unit. I have bought 2 of them for 2 different cars, one for me and one for my dad's car after I saw how well it worked in my car. I was attracted to it because of its capabilities for building a system. I started off by just adding the head unit, but I still had factory speakers, then I added Rockford Fosgate Speakers later on. After that I got a 4 channel alpine amp for the speakers and a 2 channel alpine amp for my alpine sub. It sounds great now. Very impressed. But it sounded great even with my factory speakers. It was a huge difference in sound quality, as should be expected when adding any aftermarket head unit. After I saw how good the Head Unit was, I put one in my dad's car with Polk Audio speakers. It sounds excellent as well. I really like the fact that it has 4v preamp outputs, and that it has 3 of them. I also like how you can tailor it to your specific setup with the equalizers and everything. Most of the other head units in this price range do not feature this, they just have preset equalization options. For the price it can't be beat. Best entry-level head unit on the market. Definitely recommend for someone who is on a budget, but needs a head unit that can grow with your system.

Pros: 3 4-volt Preamp Outputs, equalizers, sound quality, easy to use, price

Cons: I wish it could change colors like a lot of the other head units. Small complaint, definitely not a deal breaker. Buy it now.

So far this radio is amazing The sound quality is better than the stock one on my 01 Nissan Frontier Crew Cab. With the new stereo I'm able to pick up stations i could barely hear with my old one like they are down the street. It was about what I expected when installing because i had to do things like solder wires and install the brackets for it. Currently i'm only really using 2 Rockford Fosgate prime speakers in my front doors because the back 2 are busted and make bad rattling sounds but the front sounds amazing. I just cant wait to install the rear ones. Anyways I would highly reccomend this head unit to anyone wanting to build their own audio system.

Pros: Looks good Sounds good Picks up radio great Can be hidden easily with detachable faceplate works good with an ipod

Cons: Not super easy to install but probably average a little difficult to navigate through songs and stations

My last kenwood just died (mechanical failure of the auto-flipping faceplate) at 7 years old. I wanted another kenwood that would work with my existing Sirius module and the X395 does. I try to keep in mind what i paid for this (not much) but this is not a great receiver. It's good enough though. Remember, if you're going to spend an afternoon ripping apart your dashboard, crimping wires etc, plus using the device everyday it may be worth it to you to spend a little more for something nicer. The single-line display looks like an 80s calculator. Sound quality is just OK but i don't have great speakers. It doesn't have a dimmer lead and is very bright at night. The display text can be dimmed 1 level but it's buried in the menu. The menu controls are not intuitive at all. THERE'S ONE GLOBAL EQ (bass/mid/treb) SETTING ACROSS ALL INPUTS. Every source sounds different so who wants the same bass level across tuner/ipod/aux/sirius/cd?? Ridiculous when you think it really doesn't cost to add that. Plus just getting to the sound settings is 6 button presses winding through the menu structure. HUH? Oh, and after trying 5 different ipod cables i still get kicked out of ipod mode because the loose usb jack. This sounds like a bad review but i think this is a decent product for someone who just wants a basic receiver and doesn't need to get into the menu much. Someone who likes to use all of the various input sources might be disappointed.

Pros: the remote is nice. Sounds OK, Cheap.

Cons: bad menu structure, no separate EQ settings for each input, unreliable USB jack, very cheap-looking text display and is completely washed out in sunlight.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a super stereo. Installed last night in 2 hours. I'm a complete novice. This was my first attempt. Crutchfield convinced me I could to do it myself. The dash kit was easy to assemble, and the wiring harness went like clock work. The challenge for me was figuring out how the stereo connected (fit) into the dash kit. After reading the sketchy dash kit instructions, I kind of figured it out on my own. The posi-connectors suggested by my rep were a plus as I do not solder (an extra $8). Listening to music today after almost 2 months without a car stereo. Wish I had ordered from Crutchfield sooner. Super easy. And everything I needed came with the stereo and for free! And this Kenwood, the rep recommended, "best stereo on the market for the price." I have no complaints and my kids even think it looks like something out of Batman's headquarters (I guess that ranks as a coolness factor). Order from Crutchfield. You'll pay as much elsewhere and you won't get the dash kit, wiring harness, and the free tech support to back it up! A++++ to Crutchfield.

Pros: Nice interface. Good looking stereo. After install, easy to use without reading the manual. Like the built-in USB and AUX inputs. Comes with a 2 year warranty; most of the others I looked at only have 1 year warranty.

Cons: It takes about 5 business days to get something on the West Coast from Virginia. Really have none.

Nice radio for the money. A little hard to make audio adjustments but it does sound very good once you get them where you like. The display is a little wierd, you either have the clock shown or scholling text, it is hard to tell what station number you are on, it only shows for a split second when you first tune to the station. I don't want to sound down on this because it is great value for the sound and options but the volume knob is a deal beaker, I would have sent it back but I had it to long before I installed it and found out. I have glued a rubberband around the knob, If you have rubber fingers you should be OK but I have never met anyone like that yet..

Pros: Great value for the options and sound quality.

Cons: Very small and super duper slippery volume knob. I can't stress this enough. You almost have to experiance it to believe it. The KDX396 has a rubber band?.?.?. Why not the KDX395??

I was looking for a receiver that would be best suited for playing iPod tunes. The hands off mode does not scroll the song that's playing, it just displays the first song title played and does not change. I've not spent a whole lot of time with it and it looks like I need to have the manual open to figure out if I have it set properly. Sound quality is a marked improvement over the factory radio. I will need to change the speakers to get it sounding any better.

Pros: Very easy to install. The harness that was provided worked perfectly. Has both USB and aux port on the front.

Cons: Buttons are really small and you kind of poke at the hoping your hitting the one you want. I have not decided if I'm going to keep it or not.

    The perfect Stereo

I have a 2000 Cadillac STS with the Bose double-din stereo. It had a cassette player, a CD player, and controls for the 6-disc changer in the console. To say i needed to upgrade is an understatement. I had bought my wife a Kenwood last year for Christmas and I lusted deeply for that USB port. I opted for a single-din and gained a pocket for stuff. When I installed this thing, i was amazed. It has HD radio plus Pandora connectivity. But i love it for the wide array of adjustments i can make to the sound. I have an 8GB flash drive plugged in, and i could go for MONTHS without hearing the same song twice. Yes, HD radio is nice, but with my own music list chugging away, I choose to never hear another commercial while in my car. Awesome job Kenwood!!!!!!!!!

Pros: 1.Front USB and audio jack ports. I despise sitting in my car listening to ads. NEVER. AGAIN. 2. HD and Pandora radio. I actually did pick up a few extra stations. 3. It gives name and artist for songs on my flash drive AND on radio stations( didn't know that part) 4. Great sound shaping options 5. Hundreds of color options to match your interior lighting 6. Tiny remote sits in my new pocket under the stereo. I lost my steering wheel controls when i switched so i keep my remote handy

Cons: 1. It sounds so good I've blown 2 door speakers. OOPS 2. The GM adapter module i paid for was almost useless. i would say only buy it if you have onstar or other higher tech stuff you may lose. All i really retained from it is my door ding, and when my low fuel light comes on my stereo mutes for 2 seconds instead of me getting a ding. 3. wiring was very tight in my dash. But you always have to be prepared for a little drilling or cutting. 4. What will I do with all my cassettes???

The only one problem...I have a convertible and when the roof is down, due to the sun, the face of the stereo is just one bright purple color and none of the readings can be seen, so there is a lot of "blind searching" being done while driving. I installed this unit in my 2000 GMC Sierra 4dr truck. I took sufficient time to review the owner's manual as the functionality is selected by pressing and turning the volume knob. After setting up my listening preferences, the unit sounded 1000% better than the OEM CD Receiver. The "STANDBY" function turns the unit off while maintaining the unit backlighting and clock. The installation kit provided by Crutchfield has everything necessary to install the unit. Just a couple of tips: The antenna adapter fit loosely to the unit antenna input. I wrapped both ends with electrical tape to preclude becoming disconnected once installed and prevent metal to metal noise under driving conditions The extra length of wiring from the unit and OEM adapters may need to be tie wrapped to existing wire bundles as you install the unit to move them out of the way and again preclude vibration during normal driving conditions. I used the Posi-Products Car Stereo Connectors to connect the stereo adapters together. They were a breeze to use without using solder, tape, or crimps. The in-dash receiver kit provided by Crutchfield was easy to figure out and the install looked professional once the dash was put back together Overall, very pleased with this product and Crutchfield support.

I bought this unit almost for the sole purpose of usb functionality. I wanted to load all of my songs to a thumb drive or 2 & play my songs by artist, album or at random. This unit will play songs from a usb drive but the search capabilities, random play and overall reliability are sorely lacking. The documentation that came with the unit is almost non-existent. The search capability allows you to search by song, album or artist but is extremely flaky. Often while scrolling through your list to find the artist you'd like to play the unit will inexplicably stop & display "NA File" or "No device present" meaning you have to start your search all over again & hope that the unit doesn't go into the Twilight Zone again while you search for Elton John. Sometimes it happens just paging forward to the next song. The random function is hardly random. It seems that it builds a list of songs to play "randomly" and always uses that list to select the order. No matter what you do you will always have the same random order of songs! Kenwood has created a software program to build a database to supposedly improve functionality. It helps, but I am so disappointed with the unit, & I feel stuck with the unit. [$] for the player, [$] dollars for a conversion kit and 100 for an installation and I wish I had my old Sony back. It's a lot of money for what I received. Unfortunately, Crutchfield recommended the unit to me. I won't buy another Kenwood.

Pros: The unit has good sound.

Cons: Functionality is poor. Buttons are small and confusing. Documentation is very weak.

Sound quality is good., and I've never had a problem with a Kenwood, so I'm not worried about it. I've had the unit for two weeks. Easy install with Crutchfield's kit. Flash drive works without the optional adapter cable, so I'm very pleased with that. My only complaint is that the USB can only have a max of 255 folders, with a max of 255 songs each. If a maximum number of gigabytes of music were allowed instead of the max number of files system, I would not have had to pool all of my songs from each artist into one folder per artist so that I can have more room. So that is a bit of a pain, although you can fit tons of music on there if you do it that way.

The more I learn about this unit the better I like it. I have enjoyed fine tuning this unit to my listening pleasures. It's been fun.

Pros: Good sound quality for the price. Looks nice in my 3000gt. Easy to use. Installation to the factory amp was simple. I did check with Customer service just to check behine myself. A 4 minute conversation and I felt cool.

Cons: The face plate was a little too wide in the 4" opening. I can live with it. I think the standby is the off mode.

Needed a replacement for a 02 Toyota Avalon with factory installed JBL system. Installion kit and instructions were simple and easy to follow. Basically plug & play. Ran into a problem with delayed sound volume which seemed to require a few seconds to fully ramp up. Did contact Crutchfield Tec advisor for assistance. Got several possible suggestions, but problem did not go away. Car has been sold and new owner was not bothered by delayed volume.

    Pros: Price & easy installation

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this receiver to replace a Dual Receiver sent by Crutchfield. Their satisfaction guaranteed policy is definitely superb. I wasn't happy with my first choice and Crutchfield took care of my concerns immediately and recommended this new Kenwood receiver. The Dual's display was very dim and you could not read it when the sun was out. This Kenwood receiver's display is very bright. It was super easy to install and it sounds wonderful. I purchase a Kenwood Special Cable to connect my stand-alone satellite radio to the unit in the back versus the AUX Port on the front. The satellite radio is available when you select the CD changer; however, this is no problem to operate. The Dual just had a Bass and Treble adjustments only. This receiver has many sound and equalization choices. I'm going to have to give the manual a good read and practice to get things right. When things are right; however, it sounds wonderful and has a lot of power for my little car. You have the option of adding a bunch of separate amplifies to this unit, including a sub-woofer. I am saving those options for the future; but I think it sounds wonderful enough right now. A very, very good receiver for the money!

Pros: Great Sound. Ability to attach up to five additional amplifiers. Bright and readable display

Cons: Sound frequency adjustment is somewhat complex. A good read of the manual is required.

After listening to this head unit in my work truck (an '07 Peterbilt) playing through the stock speakers and single 10' sub with Fosgate Punch amp, I was amazed at the sound quality, and loved the easy-to-use features and EQ options. So I decided to get one for my pickup, an '04 F-150 along with some Polk Audio 5x7s for all four doors. Couldn't believe the price, under $300 for everything! Included installation instructions made everything a breeze. Thanks Crutchfield, you made a customer for life!!!

All around good reciever. The one issue I have is when you plug whatever device it is into the usb slot to listen to muisc it also continues to charge the device you have plugged in resulting in said device overheating. If you decide on buying this reciever I highly recommend investing in an auxillary cord just so you have the option of not constantly charging the device plugged into the usb slot and tavoiding the over heating issue of the reciever and your device.

This unit is a great value if you're using your iPod or mp3 player or whatever (or CDs too). There's nothing really flashy about it, but the sound quality is great. The EQ may be a bit confusing if you don't understand Q's and frequency ranges, but there are several good factory settings to choose from. If you are technical about your sound, you get a pretty good EQ to work with... 3 bands to manipulate with center freq and width. The increments with the EQ as well as the volume are subtle, which is good. Overall, I'd recommend this unit for somebody looking to push good sound to the speakers without worrying about flash and fancy.

Pros: iPod interfaces very smooth (no delays) Great sound Budget Built solid

Cons: No display color adjustment Simple display makes navigating menus a hassle (for somebody used to a touch screen)

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

When I first pulled this item out of the box, I could tell I had a good product on my hands. It's was very well packaged and gave an innial impression of a good quality receiver. Install: The only reason I gave it 4 stars in durability is that during installation, when I had to push quite a bit on the face plate, some parts felt a little flimsy - but nothing broke. Now, it's not kenwoods fault that I had to push on it - it's GMs stupid dash design, but that's another story. Use: FYI for the reader - I have mine hooked up via RCAs (front and rear channel) to a rockford 4 channel and also an amp for my sub. Since I don't have any speakers hooked directially to it, I can't comment on the quality of the internall amp but the sq through the RCAs is superb - no buzz, no static with no signal at high volume, and there 4 volts which is great. After a short tweaking of the user eq to match my amps and car, I'm sat listing to some chuck mangione like I've never heard before. If you don't know what .005 THD means - it means that if you have this thing hooked up to quality speakers with quality amps and good cables - the clarity will blow you away. In my car, i like it loud, but I put excellent sound quality before loudness any day and let me tell you, I'm impressed! I've had people get out of my car after a demo and tell me that the music clarity is better than that of their 3 thousand dollar HT systems at home. As for features and ease of use, its real easy to learn and use.

Pros: Sound quality (im an audiophile and let me tell you, its good) Fit and finish, easy to use menus, and "passenger mode" to let you control music FROM THE IPOD and not the stupid dash controls - some receivers don't do this so check before you buy.

Cons: Some of the buttons feel a little flimsy and might wear out, but nothing has broken yet so I'm happy.

Comparing it to my 2002 Saturn OEM Radio the Exceleon sounded excellent, except, even from the get-go could I tell the bass wasn't quite there. Mids and highs were absolutely ideal, while the lower end was clearly lacking. All these features to increase bass level (Bass boost lv1/lv2, Bass Level +8) and my stock stereo still out-does the Exceleon in low end preformance.

Recently installed one of these into my 2002 Ford Taurus, very happy with the upgrade. Wanted to run subs and have the mp3 plugin ability. The install was a little more involved in the Taurus because of the integrated temperature controls with the radio setup, but overall not bad. The radio itself performs perfectly. I'm not sure why people were complaining about being too complicated to setup the EQ and sound settings. I find the menus very easy to navigate if you spend just a couple minutes going through them. Lots of great features for controlling the sound, as well as controlling an external amp/subs. The sound is nice and clean, I have front/rear Infinity speaker running off the deck and they sound awesome. The remote is a nice added bonus. Get one!

After reading the specs, I was nervous this stereo would be confusing to use because of all the features it has. However, I was pleasantly surprised how easy it was to set up the equalizer features to my liking in just minutes. I could hear the differences in each quality setting. It is Ipod ready; just plug it into the USB slot with your Ipod cord on the right of the face plate. The screen lettering is clean and easy to read. I highly recommend this stereo to those who want great sound, lots of equalizer settings, and all easy to use and function. Pair it with good 3-way speakers and you've got yourself an awesome basic system. Add an amp/sub, and you can't go wrong with the high clarity and added bass!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I wanted to upgrade the factory stereo of my 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee in order to play my iPod. I did not really have any complaints about the factory unit, but I could not play my iPod directly from the factory stereo. This head unit, along with 2 sets of moderately priced door speakers from Kenwood (and Crutchfield), was a much bigger improvement than I anticipated. I know many Crutchfield customers have forgotten more about sound quality than I will ever know, and I cannot vouch that the sound from this unit is better than more expensive units. But I can tell the sound is much better than the "upgraded" factory stock stereo. I would recommend this unit for anyone wishing to upgrade a factory stock unit for a very reasonable price.

Pros: Good quality sound, USB attachment for ipod, attractive price, mounting hardware provided at no additional cost

Cons: The controls are not as easy to use as factory stock unit, but owner's manual is helpful. I wish the RDS was a little easier to read the songs, but this is a minor fault.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've tried my best to like this receiver. I've dumped more money into this than I would have liked. So here is my review. I've had the receiver for 6 months now. It sounds horrible. I originally purchased it to replace the stock stereo in my 2004 Camry. I knew going into this, that my speakers were going to sound like factory speakers. I was fine with that. I just wanted a way to hook up my mp3 player. So I replaced the receiver and it sounded horrible, no bass at all. It sounded like I was in a tin can. I figured I just needed to tweak some settings, I was wrong. I spent the next 3 months adjusting every setting I could, bass boost, mids, highs, frequency... everything sounded like garbage. So I contacted tech support, we ran through some tests, everything seems to be hooked up okay. So I decided to buy new speakers. I installed those and it made the problem even worse. Just for fun I decided to hookup the factory stereo... It sounded amazing. I even sent the receiver back Kenwood for repair. They said the unit was fine, they said the problem was my speakers being out of phase. So I reversed the wiring on my speakers, it sounded worse. Look, I've installed 4 stereos and I have never had an issue like this. I'm stuck with this piece of garbage. Avoid Kenwood at all costs.

Pros: You can hookup usb devices to it.

Cons: The sound is terrible. I spent so long messing with the settings, that I'm stuck with this piece of garbage.

    Definitely worth the money

This unit is perfect for a lesser expensive build but all the options and control of the more expensive options. Install is easy and the sounds it gives me are phenomenal. The sub pre amps are a must have along with the iPod control. The controls for your sound are very in depth, and definitely take some time devotion to get the full use of the unit. It took me about two hours to cycle through all of the combinations of settings but once I figured it all out, the system sounds nearly perfect It's a must have for audiophiles like me who want big boom for not so big bucks.

Pros: The wide range of control and sleek looks

Cons: Not a plug and play unit due to the depth on controls. but worth the effort

I picked this unit because of the overall reputation of Kenwood, the online reviews, and product features and price. Overall I am very satisfied. There were no problems integrating this unit into my vehicle, and it does everything I was hoping for.

Pros: Escellent compatibility with IPod Touch and IPhone, good, clear sound. Excellent features and quality for the price.

Cons: The tuner doesn't filter static as well as the original factory unit. Controls are a little complex, given the many features offered. Once I mastered the small number of options I actually use regularly, use was easy.

My kids claim that the sound is no better than the stock system that was in the Aveo at purchase. They are now lobbying for speakers. The Installation was very easy, but there was a confusing statement about the power wire which I had to call and get confirmed. The support person was very helpful and we resolved it quickly. This could have been avoided if the documentation would have been correct. The install kit fits ok, but the unit is a bit too recessed in the new frame and its almost impossible to remove the faceplate. All in all, a great unit for the $$$.

Pros: Easy install, good features, iPOD controls.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am a 54-year-old rock music diehard who has installed several car stereos over the years, most of them with the very helpful aid of your installation kits. I'm so old that i remember ordering from your catalog before this newfangled thing called the Internet even existed! This latest project was far more complicated than I ever dreamed that it would be, but it had a happy ending. I quickly realized that I was in over my head, but thanks to your uncanny ability to have sent me every conceivable gadget that I would possibly need, success finally arrived. i had never had to disassemble the entire front dash of a car before-now I feel qualified to work in a GM assembly plant! Your instructions were amazing, and all of the custom pieces were there, and between the exploded drawings and the big pile of parts, it reminded me of the old days of model car building. When I first opened the boxes and saw all of the stuff, i hoped that I wouldn't need all of it-at the end, I was eternally grateful that it was there because I used ALL of it except the new speaker wire! The receiver sounds great, the speakers are really good, and it's securely mounted thanks to the flawless combo of adapters, brackets, and hardware that was letter-perfect. It was a strange combination of prayer, profanity, and patience that sustained me through this multi-day project, but I figure that the hours I invested in the installation are a mere fraction of the hours of enjoyment I will get out of it.

Pros: I was looking for a significant but affordable upgrade to my worn-out factory unit, and I got it. I'd been struggling along with only AM/FM and a cassette player (remember those???)), so now I can play my cd's. I have no clue how to use most of the other features on it, but that's fine-I got what I wanted, and after a lot of sweat equity, it is up and running. I LOVE how easy it is to type in the vehicle you own and see so many great choices, and the inst kits are beyond amazing-thank you!!

Cons: It was a tough installation, but that's not your fault-in fact, your drawings and parts are the only reason it was even doable.

Bought this to replace stock radio. I'm gonna be honest my stock system sounded really good with the exception of my rear pillar speakers which I knew I needed to replace. I installed this x395 today In my 95 sierra ext cab and was very easy with all the installation things Crutchfield sent. It looks great. As far as a direct replacement, the truck sounds about half as good as it did. Disappointed in that part so I guess I have to buy all new speakers and see if that will bring it back up to par.

Pros: Looks good, easy to install

Cons: As of now, doesn't sound near as good as the stock radio.

Pros: Nice Sound, good user adjustable audio controls. Good bang for buck overall

Thanks to Crurchfield, another easy transaction & install. My wife is thrilled with her new Kenwood car stereo. She was equally surprised at how quickly I was able to installl and make it ready for her to use. The sound and ease of use easily surpasses the 'old' Kenwood it replaced. She is still learning about all the things the stereo can do and is able to enjoy the ride.

replacement for my trusty old kenwood x590 . works great, sounds great. can fine tune to suit your system. cant beat the sound for the price. but still liked my old one better. the preset buttons combine two presets on one button that pivots right and left. old one had separate buttons. old control knob was knurled. could rotate it w/ one finger. a rubberband fixed the new one. like i said.... sounds great and cant beat the price, adjustability,3 sets of pre-outs, and a 2 year warranty. and free shipping and free install kit and free tech support.........thanks

Pros: almost infinitely adjustable. very clean sound

Cons: smooth control knob. no loudness button. you can adjust bass boost but it requires several pushes and rotations of the control knob and then 3 or 4 presses of the back button to get out of it all. could be simpler.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit alledgedly fits a BMW E36. It will if you are not using the RCA Preamp outputs. If you ARE using the the Preamp out puts there is not enough room and the radio will not fit properly on the left side. It won't "click in". Also glitchy on the rear output. Picks up a lot of alternator noise on the rear. You will need a filter only for the rear output. Not the front output, not the sub output. Just the rear. Totally bizarre. If you want a radio that fits perfectly, go to the Kenwood Excelon KDC-X396. This radio has the RCA Preamps on the left side vs. the right side. Fits an E36 BMW perfectly. But still has the rear channel noise problem. However it is a significantly better solution.

Let me say this is the best sounding stereo head I have ever installed. The freebies from Crutchfield made installation a snap. I wired this in with an Alpine KTP-445U and with 4 inch Boston Accoustics in the dash and 5 and 1/4 inch B.A. in the back, it way outshines my stock setup. Installation was easy, fits perfectly in the dash and actually easier to navigate through the menu screens than I thought it would be.

Amazing sound and these little speakers will give you enough bass if you arent into the really hard hitting subs. I also purchased with this the dashboard face plate and transfered over the heating controls and it fit really good (be sure to take a sharp blade and trim the little extra pieces and mold marks left so everything fits well. I've got a Jeep Wrangler that gets a good bit of use off the pavement, so I wanted a good receiver, but didn't want to spend $$$ in case of damage or theft. Dozens of manufacture's have good quality, low-budget receivers, but from my experience, Kenwood can't be beat. High RMS values, quality construction, and ease of use. My recent X395 hasn't let me down. Simple to use and sound quality is great. Thanks to Kenwood for constantly putting out a quality product!

So far I like the radio, especially the ability to play my iPod or other mp3 player in my car. I had an FM transmitter but it was just bad and very frustrating, this solved the issue at a very reasonable price. And, I am very pleased with the ease of installation and the great instructions that came from Crutchfield. I took about an hour and a half last night to prepare the mounting brackets and wire the radio to the Ford wiring connector. This afternoon I popped out my old Ford OEM radio and had the new unit installed in about 20 minutes. I thought this would be much more difficult, and I had lined up an installer that charges $60 if I couldn't do it myself, but everything was smooth as silk. Anyone with reasonable mechanical skills who can follow directions can install their car stero no problem. Thanks Crutchfield!

This is the first "modern" stereo Ive had in a car in about 15 years with all the new features, so Im not sure what Im about to say is too relavent. The stereo is great, however the 'src' button (in particular) is not easy to hit while you are driving. They should have made the 'band', 'src' and other smaller buttons easier to hit while driving without looking. Its great when its setup to play as you wish, but to change things while driving is not easy or safe! Also when a CD is not playing (its out) you really cant access the radio, so its frustrating not to be able to leave a CD in the unit without it playing. Good thing I already had a 10 disc player plugged into the tuner-antenna so I dont have to worry about it.

Pros: Great sound, easy to install with cables from crutchfield

Cons: poor physical interface (buttons). Also hard to pop face plate in and out in my toyota tacoma due to the stereo's face being flush with the enclosure. I think it needs to be about 1-2 mm forward so the face will be easier to remove/re-install, so I leave it in all the time.

Great deck for the money. Crutchfeild made the install really easy, with their step by step instructions. They said that this deck will not fit in a 2001 Chevy Cavalier, which is false. The receiver dash kit has a spacer, that you need to use, that gives you about .25" to .375" of extra space so I had no problems installing at all.

Pros: Great deck for the money. 4V preamp outs.

    Cons: Interface kinda sucks.

Well, I absolutely loved this head unit the first day I put it into my car, it worked great and the sound was SO SO SO much better than my factory audio unit. I didn't even know my speakers could be so clear with the right head unit! But after only two days of having my head unit installed in my car the USB port stopped working.. for now I've been using the AUX cable but I don't think the sound is as good through the AUX and I like being able to control my ipod songs through the unit itself so I'm pretty annoyed. I'm going to call tech support to see if there's something I'm missing but I don't think there is because I've removed it plenty of times to check if it would be a wiring issue and all the wires are how it's been since I installed it... so I'm pretty annoyed with this.. hopefully tech support can help me but I might even return it because I'm so ticked off.

    Pros: Great sound

Cons: Stopped working after 2 days of having it

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had never installed a stereo before, but Crutchfield made it easy. The same stereo was much more expensive at the local stores and I admit to being a little intimidated to install my own. The least expensive installer I found was a big box store for around $70 just for installation. They wanted another $50-60 for the wiring kit and spacer for the stereo. Installation took me an hour and went well. The Kenwood works great. Lots of features I have not even tried yet. Sounds great, looks great, easy to use, and great value for the money. If you are like me and have never installed a stereo, don't be scared. With some basic knowledge you too can follow the simple instructions and install a quality stereo to replace your broken or poor quality equipment. Thanks Crutchfield!

Pros: Great Price, Great Quality, Great Instructions, Options for future add-ons, Free Shipping, & Free Installation Equipment

Cons: None stick out...does not dim or have color changing options

Just installed it in my '98 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Instructions were great - easy installation. Took about 20 minutes to hook up the wiring connector and another 30 minutes to install and put everything back together. Sounds great without an amp. Looks great. Like the iPod control features. At no point was I surprised by something or left confused during the installation process. I had never removed and installed a head unit before.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recieved this yesterday and installed it in my 2006 Jeep Commander this afternoon. I've used a few Kenwood products in the past and not been disappointed and it looks like this will continue in the tradition. Simple install and with the Can-BUS adapter for my Jeep wiring it was a breeze. Don't get me wrong, having to by an adapter for this is a pain, but it made the whole process much easier. See my review of the adapter for more information. Once installed, I noticed an immediate improvement in sound quality and quantity, and that is using the facotry speakers still. I'm replacing those with some MTX ones in the coming week. I'm sure that will only make me even happier with this unit as well. Controls are simple to use, the front panel inputs are very handy, and overall, there's no negatives for me. Android app for Kenwood recievers works with this unit, and is a breeze to use as well.

Pros: Simple installation, Kenwood quality, and price/performance ratio.

Cons: Nothing worth mentioning...maybe that you can't change display and button colors? I prefer the blue though...Go Cats!

    1998 Ford Expedition
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was installed in a 1998 Ford Expedition along with Infinity Reference speakers. First off this is an excellent head unit and I would recommend this to anyone. The unit has great iPod compatibility and sounds great. Plenty of power from the head unit for a simple stereo upgrade but if you do add an amp, this unit has 4 volt pre outs which a top-of-the-line feature for most head units. The sound quality is simply amazing, the menus are easy to understand and navigate, and its not flashy. Its a nice addition to the dash for those of us who want a simple, high quality radio, not a smoke and mirrors show. This unit is fairly basic from the factory but is compatible with almost every add-on adapter kenwood makes (Bluetooth add-on, HD radio add-on, satellite radio add-on) although to the best of my knowledge you can only attach one at a time. The only complaints I have are the face plate seems to be made out of a cheap plastic. The face plate is solid and feels well made when using it, but it sure doesn't look that way. The radio tuner is also disappointing. This could just be my installation but I found the tuner to be very weak, struggling to pick up stations my 14 year old Ford stereo picked up just fine. When it did pick up a station fine, it sounded like the music was compressed. There was little lows at all and it sounded muddy. However, I hardly use the radio and with a cd or ipod, the sound quality is top notch!

Pros: Simple to use Clean Design Excellent sound quality (ipod, cd) Great expand-ability (bluetooth, hd radio, satellite radio) 4 volt pre outs (highly desirable if adding an amp to your system)

Cons: Lousy Radio tuner Questionable quality of plastic faceplate

Replaced an old Sony in my Nissan, chose this Kenwood mainly based on the popularity factor. Great price, was easy to install... the only problem I had was identifying wires on the Nissan (original radio had been replaced years ago, some wires were left hanging), but I called the Crutchfield help line and they had the answer e-mailed to me in less than a minute. This unit is easily worth every penny, sounds amazing with the Polk speakers I added. CD's, iPod etc, displays names of albums etc, something I expected only from more expensive models. All the accessories are a perfect fit, I didn't need anything more than what was in the box for installation except some wire connectors (but that's only because the connector in my truck had been cut). Will probably order another one of these for my Ford.

Pros: Great value, great sound, easy installation, gives the truck some class.

Excellent radio. Put it in my daughter's Volvo and she is very pleased. Sounds better than the original Volvo unit which was about ten years old and eating her CDs. Fit and installation was quick and easy, about 15 minutes. The wiring harness takes 5 to 10 minutes if you use wire nuts; I soldered and used heat shrink tubing, about 15-20 minutes. Ease of use lost a star 'cause these new radios have a learning curve to them for old folks like me who like one knob/button per function. I don't "dig" "coolness" in a radio, but it does look good and not as cluttered and confusing as many contemporary radios, so in that sense it is "cool."

    Kenwood KDC-X395 2/8/2012 Review...

HappyCustomerNY from Westchester, NY on 2/9/2012

Needed a receiver with an iPod port so I checked out what's available from Crutchfield.com. After looking through a whole lot of choices for a 2005 Chrysler Crossfire I narrowed my choice to this unit. Crutchfield delivered the receiver in two days. Unit installed easily within a half hour. However, I needed some technical help because the Crossfire wiring was not clear. JT took my call solve the problem immediately. The KDC-X395 sounded great, the high tones were crisp, the mids are clear and the lows were booming. This receiver has a lot of possible settings which made the unit complicated for non-geeks. Geek however will love the available fine tuning options. I belong to the geek population so I like this product very much. This unit is priced nice, works well and sounds great. What more can you ask for....

Pros: Installs easy, Instruction sheet is clear and easy to read, the features are what I needed (AM/FM Radio, CD player (reads the most popular formats), Aux port and USB port (for iPod & USB Stick). Most important though is that the unit sounds great!

Cons: For all the positive things I said, the faceplate shifts when operating the buttons. The buttons feels delicate. Although the receiver's facade looks good, some buttons feels cheap. An non-geeky person will find this receiver too complicated but for the one's that likes fine tuning choices this is ideal.

While I really like most aspects of this unit, there are a couple of items that are a pain. After a ~1 yr of use, I find that the AM radio section is horrible. I was forced back to AM to listen to Portland Trailblazer games while driving, but can't since the local station that broadcasts the game is rarely able to be received. Not a problem in our other cars. Additionally, the buttons, as other reviewers have noted, are small and a bit difficult to deal with while driving. Still and all, I really like the USB/Aux inputs for music players and the CD and FM function just fine.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installation was straightforward and the sound quality is fine. It has no "Off" button, which means it is on from the moment you start the car. The controls are small compared to the factory unit it replaced. A new user would do well to play with them in the driveway before taking to the road. I use every output source except the Ipod: tuner, cd player, auxiliary device, and thumb drive/MP3 player. Tabbing among them is something worth practicing in the driveway. Crutchfield reps have been quick to respond, polite, and competent. I am satisfied with this device.

Pros: Ease of installation, Crutchfield support, performance. Plays every device I've tried. Love being able to use a thumb drive for podcasts, books, and music.

Cons: Always on when car is running, small and not very intuitive controls. A nice fat button for switching modes would be wonderful.

The system sounds great, however, it was not built driver friendly! The tiny control buttons were not built to be used while driving. This system was built to be used within stationary positions, not moving vehicles....Not cool at all! I am thinking about selling this one and reinstalling my factory system back into my Jeep Grand Cherokee where the buttons are all large enough to operate while driving and is very driver friendly. I took it out because it was designed before the Mp3 format was established and had no usb jacks.

Pros: The look and the sound and is able to utilize the USB and Mp3 format.

Cons: Controls are to small for automobiles in motion...especially when you want to do something as simple as ejecting a CD using the tiny button.

I replaced a $1000 radio in my 1999 Porsche Boxster, with this radio. It's so much more powerful. The subwoofer out to the amp already in my car, made my subwoofer Door speakers come alive. With the original Decker Porsche radio, you could barely hear them. Now they really rock. Tweaking the audio, you almost have too many choices.

Pros: Fantastic sound, hooks up to my Ipod. Great Power to speakers. Highly recommend.

    Less than impressed

Pappy from Sacramento, CA on 2/2/2012

This unit is rather sub-par imho. I have a 97 Maxima that had a decent Bose system. The head unit died and I replaced it with the Kenwood and a new set of speakers. The result was disappointing. The factory unit had much better bass, more balanced sound and a much better tuner. I spent around 500 bucks for the head unit, speakers and installation. I would have been better off spending that on a 15 year old used factory head unit than trying to replace it. In my case, I would need to add an amplifier, as the internal Kenwood amplifier is only token, and a subwoofer. In my situation, to replace a factory head unit in a 15 year old car, and have to spend over $1,000 for equivalent sound is vexing.

    Pros: Ipod connectivity

Cons: Tinny, hollow sound. Internal amplifier is inadequate. Ipod track information non-functional. Display hard to see between 8am - 6pm.

Got the unit and all the components to install quickly. I was a little uncomfortable when I was unable to get sound, but after a short phone call with the technician, he quickly determined where I had made an error in the wiring and took all of three minutes to complete the change and it works awesome. If you are going to use the integrated amp, be sure it is working before you get started. Mine had a blown channel which was covered up by the tuner amp and I discovered it during my first attempt. Bypassed the secondary amp for now and everything is heaven for the wife. And if she is happy, life is good.

Pros: good looks and sound. Lots of bling, almost too much for an old fart like me.

Cons: Perhaps a little better detail on the power/ground wiring and antenae, but every car is different so it's a tough one to document for every type.

The OEM CD changer in my 6-year old car jammed with the CD's in it. A new replacement for the changer alone would have cost me $400+ new and $100-200 used. This is a great value! Crutchfield makes it easy with the extensive instructions specific to my car and the correct face plate. Installation ws not a problem. Sound is as good or better than the OEM unit. The the iPod interface alone would have cost as much as this stereo unit(and since I've wanted to install an interface anyway . . . all the better!).

Pros: With the Crutchfield-included faceplate kit, harness and instructions installation was easy.

Cons: Controls may take a while to learn. Display doesn't brighten or dim with dash. Have to remember to detatch the face when leaving the car (and more importantly, remember to bring it with you when you are going for a ride).

Upgraded my stock radio in my 1996 Saab 900SE Turbo. The sound is much much better, even with the stock speakers. I like the ability to use a USB drive to play all the music I want, no need to burn a CD. The user interface is awkward, the big button isn't the power button, and navigating all the folders isn't intuitive: For example, the radio doesn't show the name of the folders, it just says Folder34, or Folder239. I have not figured out how to go from folder to folder, right now I have to go through all the songs in each folder to get to the next folder. Bleh.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this receiver for my 2004 Chevy Silverado with a Bose stereo and I should have purchased it sooner. The foremost reason for the purchase was the iPod connectability, the sound quality is PHENOMENAL when compared to the factory receiver. The controls and features are very easy to use and understand, it has everything you would want in a radio. The installation took about half a day and a call to Crutchfield. The call was well worth it because the tech support was great and the guy knew exactly what I was doing wrong (Make sure to connect the blue-white wire to the p-conn wire on the receiver). I would also recommend soldering the wires together for improved sound quality as well as the purchase the GM adaptor, its $50 and it keeps all the door chimes and On-star working. Follow the wiring instructions from the GM adaptor along with the receivers instructions and you should be fine. On a side note, most of the wires connect to absolutely nothing so just tape those together to avoid shorting out your receiver. I highly advise you to purchase this receiver if you are looking for an improvement in sound quality for your music. Because everyone wants to here music the way it was intended to be heard, especially in a car that you spend hundreds of hours sitting in.

Pros: The iPod connectability and sound quality are amazing. As well as the provided face plate from Crutchfield, which allows the radio to look like it actually belongs in your car... even though it took a bit of modification shown in the instructions.

Cons: The installation was a bit confusing when it came to wiring

We put the KDC-X395 in a 2000 Mustang. Warning on the removal instructions of the existing stereo! It sounds so easy but not so for the Mustang! You use the U shaped universal DIN removal tools in the holes no prob, but pulling the stereo and CD deck out was a nightmare. The old stereo came out in pieces in my hands! The trick ended up being that you have to remove the Dash trim around the stereo and AC controls first. You also have to remove the small trim ring about the gear shifter! Then the old receiver and CD deck will slide out like the instructions say. I guess I am a little thick headed, plus I hated to remove the existing trim because I was afraid it might break due to age. But, it came out in one piece and after that everything went just as the instructions say. We also used the Universal Din Pocket #003UPK750 from Crutchfield. This is a tray that takes the place of where you remove the separtae CD deck. It is a great price and now it gives you a tray to put your IPod in while it is hooked up to the new receiver. We are very happy with the radio! It sounds great and even makes the stock speakers come alive! My daughter especially loves the IPod controls and how it tells you the artist and song title. This same info also is displayed on the FM radio as well!

Pros: IPod capability and great sound!

Any true audiophile, and audio professional will tell you that. I have it attached to a 300 Watt RMS Kenwood 8105D amp, and two 12" subs, 4 Alpine Type-S door speakers, and it sound great. About to add a 4 channel Alpine 100 Watt RMS per channel amp.

Pros: Great. Cool looking, works great with the iPhone. Good quality, fairly good audio quality

This is one of the coolest-looking decks I have ever seen. The blue lighting and florescent display look great at night and are not too bright. The bass, mid and treble settings offer a lot more control than other decks that only provide +/- 6 db of adjustment. The built-in EQ curves sound good too, depending on the type of music you play. I like the source tone memory that stores different custom EQ curves for CD, radio and USB. The CD and tuner both work very well and sound good. Most of the time I just use 2 GB flash drives, each one has about 450 mp3's on it, and the deck reads and starts playing each drive almost instantly. Even at 128 kbps the mp3 sound quality is excellent. I can not tell any difference between mp3 and CD with this deck. The 4-volt preouts sound great with my Kicker amp and the sub level control and low-pass crossover make my sub sound a lot better than it did with my old deck. My only real problem with the deck was the volume knob feels very slick, hard to turn it while driving. I solved that problem by putting a nice wide black rubber band on the knob for a better grip. It is the prefect diameter to fit the knob, is black and looks like Kenwood put it on there at the factory. I have taken a couple of road trips now with this deck and I have to say it is an exceptional value for its price. It has a lot of great features and functions usually only found on higher priced decks. Crutchfield's Customer Service is the very best I have ever experienced.

Pros: The sound quality is excellent. The built-in EQ curves sound great, not like on some other brands where the EQ curve just adds distortion. The audio controls are easy to access and adjust, even while driving.

Cons: The display is a little hard to see in direct sunlight. It's not impossible to see but it is a bit dim in very bright light. The volume knob has a slippery feel to it.

has gucci features, needs basic features

Source button is too close to the faceplate eject button. Volume/control knob is a little slick, needs more tactile feel. Needs an attenuator button on the face!!!! Would be great to have a flip-down faceplate too. Both the flip and attenuator were features on my old KDC-MPV7019. Also, the antenna power wire makes the antenna go up for all sources of audio! Only way the antenna stays down is when the unit is in STANDBY (aka OFF). Once again, old KDC-MPV7019 only raised the antenna when the RADIO was on. Wish it was dimmable with the car dimmer control instead of just dim on/off. If you really need Bluetooth, steering wheel control, HD radio ready, and RDS, get this one. If not, get the KDC-248U and save some money too.

Pros: Great display, USB & AUX in the front is handy (and iPod control). Great sound/EQ, great audio features.

Cons: Not dimmable with the car, no attenuator/mute on the face, raises power antenna always unless it is OFF.

I have an Alpine type R 12 2+2, 1 ohm on a Rockford 700 punch, a Cerwin Vega 10 4+4, 2 ohm on a Kenwood 1000 watt KAC8105d, a 1.5 farad capacitor, and 4 Pioneer 6x8 speakers to replace the stockers. My cap is a little small and I am usually a Pioneer guy but this head unit makes a great sound. Max volume is seriously lacking but it is still a pretty good deal.

Pros: Clarity and sound quality. This replaced a Pioneer and now all the noise between tracks and at low volumes is gone.

Cons: The volume only goes to 35. I just can't make it any louder without severely sacrificed audio quality. The way this CD Player works with such a low top means it has a full sound starting at low volumes that makes the sound get distorted at Max volume . Max volume just isn't quite loud enough with this unit.(even after fine tuning). That and what ever happened to the flip down face plate? Seems like you gotta spend an arm and/or the leg to get a flip down face plate anymore.

My CD player recently broke so I knew I was in need for a new stereo. While browsing the site, not really intent on purchasing anything that night, I decided to chat with an adviser. I expected some long wait or a group chat but I was surprised that I was immediately talking with someone who knew what they were talking about. We talked about a future speaker replacement project in my car and what was required. Considering the service I received when I wasn't really looking for it I knew Crutchfield was the place to purchase. The unit itself is fantastic. I love the ability to limit what frequencies are sent to my speakers. That along with the front USB and AUX are what separated this unit from the sub $100 units. I've always been a believer in the more that you spend the higher quality item you'll receive. This is no exception. Crutchfield was fantastic. The included wiring harness and directions were thorough and easy to follow. I've never soldered anything before but it was really quite enjoyable. My only qualm is that either a super robot or Hercules himself bolted the factory player to the bracket and required a neighbors high torque power tool. When I upgrade my speakers to either matching Kenwood Excelon, JBL's, Polk, or whatever I choose I will definitely come back.

Pros: Easy to use volume dial for tuning and the like. Wonderful blue backlighting. Front USB and AUX inputs. Thorough audio settings.

Cons: Nothing related to the product itself.

This head unit is the foundation of my first ever audio system in my car. I was looking for a variety of features while also getting a quality HU that was made by a good company. I couldn't be happier. I guess I don't have much to compare it to since I've never really had experience with any other HU's, but I really like it so far. I like the looks and the colors go well with my car, but the quality of the sound is really impressive to me. It plays my CDs very well and they don't skip either. I enjoy CDs more than plugging in an iPod just because they're easier to navigate and I can burn CDs with .FLAC files so there isn't much quality loss. The install was pretty easy which was nice, and I really couldn't be happier with the Kenwood Excelon KDC-X395

the GOOD: iPod compatible. customizable sound. sounds great with the new 6 1/2" speakers I also installed (Kenwood KFC-1662s), although not the bass is not super deep, it sounds "tight", with good clarity. the BAD: main control knob is too slick. I have to wrap a rubber band around it to get a grip on it. although the display is dimmable, the backlit buttons are way too bright. I had to move the head unit down one slot on my console, so I'm not blinded while driving at night. FM reception doesn't seem as good as my former Alpine deck. All the customizable features are not explained well in the manual. you have to play with it before you figure out what everything does. although you can control the iPod from the deck, it's not very intuitive or convenient. I just switch to controlling from the iPod. Much easier. And although compatible with my 5th gen iPod nano, I've had to reset my ipod twice so far to get it to play. OVERALL: good value for decent sound, a 2-year warranty and a modern deck with USB and iPod compatibility, but Kenwood misses on some pretty key functionality and design features.

The features are fairly easy to use once you get used to it. Im very happy with the volume and clarity of this unit. Im also getting punchy bass even with factory speakers. The eq allows you to dial in a good sound. Front, rear, and sub filters allow you to dial it in for any speaker set up. Bass boost, sub level control, front rear and sub output rca jacks, font usb an aux inputs... Tons of features for the price plus everything you need to install it minus the vehicle. I was about to give up on my subwoofer and Polk after-market speakers. It was so frustrating to have upgraded everything in my Dodge Ram only to have my music sound louder but still bad with the OEM radio. My last investment should have been my first, since this radio is the last thing I bought. Who would have thought a 22-watt radio would have complemented my 1100-watt sub amp so well? I hear nuances in the music that I never knew were there, the volume and clarity are amazing and everything I listen to has a wonderful spacious sound stage. I look forward to listening to this Kenwood for many years to come and already have several friends interested in copying my set up. Crutchfield parts worked perfectly too!

With high hopes I bought this unit. It has the WORST base if I ever heard one. I have 8 speaker Bose system in my car and the factory installed receiver produced amazing base at half the base setting. The Kenwood hardly produces any base at all after all the 'user' EQ settings that I tried. It (or the harness I received from Crutchfield) has impedence mismatch with Benz speakers. I got this for my 2002 Volvo S60 T5 -- avoided "modernizing" till now because I figured I'd be trading it in soon -- the premium factory HU903 cranked out really good sound with CDs, but I finally had enough of messing with the CDs -- got this purely for the conveniences. Didn't want to spend a lot since I may just be using it for a year or so, but didn't want to "go too cheap" and regret that, either. The 395 fit the bill nicely. While this player doesn't have quite the warmth of the HU903, it is probably a bit better re: separation and clarity due to a newer DAC. Not the smoothest and slickest GUI, and takes a while to get used to, but it works fine for iPod, USB, and CDs -- so I have plenty of options. Apple lossless files and CDs provide totally acceptable output, but MP3 files on USB leave a bit to be desired. I did download the Kenwood app for better tagging of metadata on USBs, does help with navigating. Overall, this is a very good "blue collar" player, no regrets, glad I chose this one from the myriad of options out there.

I bought this unit to replace my stock unit in my 2007 Subaru Impreza. The stock system that came in the car was just horrible, and looked so outdated. The install of this was easy, and the harness that Crutchfield supplied was great. The unit's preloaded settings are great for musical tastes and can be altered quickly. The reason I gave it 4 stars is for three picky reasons. The first reason is the volume knob feels too "plastic-like" for me. I think Kenwood should design it with a rubber ring around the knob so its easier to turn and has a better feel to it. Second reason is in direct/bright sunlight, the display cannot be read. Thirdly, there is no mute button that I can find. Other than that, it is definitely one of the best headunits out there for functionality and price!

I haven't picked up a soldering iron in years, but that was the easy part. Tech support was a great help on the when I got confused over which cable went where. Space behind the unit was a premium due to the extra stuff and wiring, but shouldn't be a problem if you don't need any extra adapters etc. Once I finally got it in, sound was great. Pretty noticeable upgrade over the Monsoon HU once I got the EQ tweaked to my preferred settings (duh). It also looks quite sexy in the bottom pocket of my dash, but I used a bit too much force pushing the unit in the DIN cage so it's a bit stuck. Oh well...
