Overview

Our take on the Kenwood Excelon KDC-X597

Ready for your road trip

Whether you're listening to your favorite music or enjoying an audiobook, you'll be impressed by the Kenwood Excelon KDC-X597 CD receiver's combination of performance and features. You can customize the illumination color to match your vehicle's lighting. Pair up your phone with this Kenwood, and you'll be able to take calls in your car with a touch of a button. Best of all, you also get the security of Kenwood Excelon's remarkable 2-year warranty.

Built-in Bluetooth®

Once you drive with a Bluetooth receiver, you'll wonder how you ever drove without one. Just plug your iPhone® into this receiver's USB port, and the receiver does the rest – one-button pairing means no more confusing menus to wade through. If your iPhone has Siri, you'll be able to talk to her through the external mic and hear her instructions through your car's speakers. You can also use your Bluetooth connection to stream audio to the receiver from just about any Bluetooth-equipped device.

Plenty of entertainment options

  • The convenient front-panel auxiliary and USB inputs give you access to plenty of other listening options. When you plug in your iPod® or iPhone®, you'll enjoy quick navigation of your playlists and albums. Plus, if you listen to Pandora® Internet radio with your iPhone, you won't miss a beat when you plug it into this Kenwood with its dedicated Pandora controls. Android and Blackberry owners can enjoy listening to and controlling Pandora using their Bluetooth connection to the receiver.
  • When you're not listening to drive-time radio, slip in a CD to take advantage of this receiver's 24-bit digital-to-analog converter. It converts the raw data on your disc, including MP3, WMA, and AAC files, to smooth, lifelike sound, and it'll make a big difference in the music on your iPod or thumb drive, too.
  • If you store your music on an Android device, download the free Kenwood Music Control app and enjoy a variety of search and playback features when your phone is plugged into the front-panel USB.
  • For satellite radio subscribers (or those who plan to be), the KDC-X597 works with SiriusXM's outboard tuner (not included), so you can enjoy coast-to-coast reception of your favorite talk, sports, and music programming.

Shape your sound

Wimpy bass and treble controls can't compare with the KDC-X597's 3-band parametric equalizer, high- and low-pass filters, and selectable bass boost, along with settings that let you adjust for your car's speaker setup. And don't forget another Excelon sound advantage. If you're building a car audio system, one of the keys to the getting the most out of your amplifiers is a clean, powerful signal from your preamp outputs. All Kenwood Excelon receivers feature 4-volt preamp outputs that will give your amps the strong signal they need for top performance.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?

In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Kenwood stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and this Kenwood, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

I love this radio, best radio for the money I ever purchased from Crutchfield. Hard to find other radio's with these options for this price. I have 1 issue Im hoping others who have this have seen and fixed. After more then a year of being sync to my everyday car my iPhone 5 can connect but then drops from the radio. Its not a iPhone 5 issue as the phone syncs with other cars in the house hold fine. I need to see if my wifes phone will pair ok, that is my next test. I have remove the radio from my iPhone list and started over fresh, the iPhone does see it, can connect, them drops with in 30 seconds All the other custom presets I have on the radio are fine. The loss of BT with my iPhone 5 kills me, I loved this option. Anyone have any thoughts? Looks like the KDC-X598 replaces this discontinued model now.

    Pros: Love it!

    Cons: Loss my bluetooth :(

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit is a great value for the money. It has most of the same features a more expensive unit would have. I have had no issues with the Bluetooth connectivity or playback. This receiver dramatically increased the sound and clarity in my 95 s10. Calling through Bluetooth is very clear. Crutchfield makes this an even better deal by including all of the installation gear and detailed instructions.

Pros: Bluetooth, Stylish, Customization, Great Sound, Easy to Use, Hands-Free Calling

Cons: As with any screen it's hard to see in bright light

    Great bang for your buck

    1988 Ford Mustang

Found this one after all of the raving reviews here at Crutchfield and when I saw it was on sale, I pulled the trigger. I needed a rcvr for my 5 spd Mustang that had bluetooth so I could talk on the phone while driving and shifting gears. I also wanted something that gave me the freedom to listen to all of my music media, whether it be via Pandora, USB drive, or streamed from Google Music. This Kenwood deck does it and does it well. It has a coolness factor to customize the display lighting to any color you can imagine. Of course Crutchfield provided the dash install kit and harnesses needed to keep from cutting/splicing my car's wiring so the install was easy and clean! I notice now that I am back to leave my review that this offering has been discontinued by Crutchfield. I'm not sure why, but I sure am glad I got lucky and got this one a week before they quit selling it.

Pros: Features, flexibility, sound quality, looks

Cons: none that I can think of

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent radio for the price. Just updated from the stock radio that came with my 2001 Ford Escape and I couldn't believe the sound difference. Also with all the features such as Bluetooth, Sirius Radio support, an audio jack, and Pandora support, you honestly can't go wrong! Easy installation as long as you have all the parts (with Crutchfield they make that a breeze). Easily the best purchase I've made in awhile. It makes my hour long work commutes much more enjoyable.

Pros: Easy to use Tons of features Great sound quality Great price Cool color changes

Cons: Only con is I wish there was a setting where the artist and song were displayed on the same line instead of having to change the info display. Not sure if this is the radio or the Sirius radio tuner issue however.

    No disapointments.

I bought it for the handsfree phone feature, which works great by the way. Yet I really was surprised by how clear it remains at the higher volumes, even through my factory speakers. I have not had to read the manual to operate this stereo at all. Did I mention the hands free option works fantastic? I am not disappointed at all.

Pros: Great sound quality, hands free phone conversations, easy to use.

Cons: Clock display can be hard to see in direct sunlight.

Cons: When using Bluetooth and the iphone itunes app, the sound only plays thru one channel. Not sure if it's a settings thing, but should work out of the box.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was not the unit I had originally intended to buy. I asked the Crutchfield rep for recommendations based on my needs. He suggested this one. It has a better warranty, and the sound is far and away better than the OEM unit in my Mercedes. in fact, it's connected to the stock speakers without any modifications. The color changing face feature I thought was a little gimmicky, but I rather enjoy it now. It's not too distracting, just interesting. I doubt any stereo can have intuitive controls other than a rotary volume. This one has a solid-feeling volume knob; the other controls are as one would expect when you have to cram 150 functions into just a few buttons. The sound is great right out of the box. The Bluetooth works well--it takes about 15 seconds to reacquire the phone when started. The phone works as expected--microphone works in a convertible with the top down and filters out the echo as well. I'm very pleased with this, and I'd buy it again in a heartbeat. I trusted the rep's advice, and it has paid off.

    Pros: Great sound, Bluetooth phone

Crutchfield was solid on the price, delivery, and follow-up. I even called the tech support team at 10:30pm while troubleshooting my install, and they diagnosed my problem and gave me solutions. Excellent service! In short, this receiver is a great buy that shines with its Bluetooth functionality. The menus are not difficult to navigate (except perhaps starting out), and the sound EQ and dynamic color options really cater to a personalized experience. Also, having Siri available through my receiver has turned out to be the most appreciable function. I can listen to my music library, make and receive calls, send and read text messages - all while my phone stays in my pocket! It really pulls my '98 'stang out of the 20th century.

Very nice head unit with overall great system connection functionality. Combining the 3 sets of pre-outs, the HPF and LPF settings with the settings of my amp make for simple system tuning without the need of an eq or other active crossover. Good subwoofer adjustability. The Bluetooth is a great feature, not sure what I was doing without one all this time.

I was looking for a Bluetooth receiver that wouldn't break the bank. This receiver delivers! I installed this on a 2002 Chevy Tahoe. I had replaced the door speakers and sub last Christmas. These speakers now sound excellent compared to the factory receiver.

Pros: Easy on the budget. Easy to install. Sounds awesome. Bluetooth syncs up every time.

Cons: Have to change to the mode you want after the car automatically syncs to the Bluetooth device. Wish the device remembered what you were originally hooked up to and would stay there and still sync to the Bluetooth device.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So far so great! Bought this as a replacement for the stock radio in a 99 Ranger, and the improvement is significant. Sound quality is great, even with stock speakers. This is the first head unit I've bought that has Bluetooth, and it is great...no more wires running from my phone to the dash. Tuner picks up everything I'd expect it to. CD player works flawlessly. I had no problem getting the unit up and running, but if you're not technically adept, you may struggle a bit. I had a small issue installing, but a quick call to Crutchfield, and the problem was solved in no time flat. I'm very happy with this purchase, and as usual, with Crutchfield.

Pros: Bluetooth is awesome, and install kit w/ Crutchfield support made installation a breeze.

    Cons: None so far

Loving my new car stereo. Easy to read, easy to operate. Amazing sound comes out of the USB, this was the main reason I got it. No more needing CD's. I just threw some music files on a mini USB stick 16GB that I bought cheap online, and stuck it in and it plays perfect sound. I'm not technical or an IT person so something simple and easy to operate is great for me. Received the item fast. Will purchase through Crutchfield again.

The radio is very good, cool back light that changes. The quality of the sound is good with some effort to customize it to your liking. The Blue Tooth is a little cumbersome to access and the music player doesn't work well, easier to use the cable. The onboard amp has good power, plenty loud enough for a standard cab truck. Very pleased over all.

Pros: Great power and quality of sound.

Cons: Blue Tooth cumbersome to use.

I bought this for my Toyota Tacoma mainly for hands-free phone use with Bluetooth, but found it offered other improvements to my car stereo. It fully integrated with my iPhone and iPod through the USB port, which also charges both devices. Sound seems slightly better. I appreciate the ability to control the colors and brightness. My only complaint is the smallness of the controls and no knurling on the volume knob. Overall excellent value for a solid unit.

    2007 Kia Rondo
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm always a little apprehensive when it comes to tearing into the interior of my vehicles. it seems way too easy to break a clip or snap something so that it is never again the same. I did my research, and what sold me on Crutchfield was their MasterSheet for installation. I figured I would have the best chance for a smooth install if I had a good instruction document. I ordered this Kenwood as an anniversary gift to my wife for her 2007 KIA Rondo. She really likes Pandora and needed a hands free Bluetooth for making and receiving calls. After downloading the master sheet, I studied it for about 2 minutes and after a short sojourn to my local auto parts store for a panel removing tool, connectors, and a crimping tool, I went right to work. It took me 90 minutes to install the unit, and was really easy, I think anyone with very little mechanical aptitude would be able to do this. Here are a few pointers that I will offer: 1. Don't get a panel removal tool, but use a stiff putty knife and wrap the blade with electrical tape. The plastic panel removal tools came in a set of three but were much too soft, and were difficult to insert and pry. 2. test the unit before you wrap everything up, just to make sure everything is working. The unit itself is fantastic, I couldn't believe the sound quality compared to the stock unit, and we didn't replace our speakers! I dinged it 1 star for the microphone, it could use a more amplification, but it does get the job done.

Pros: Excellent Sound, easy paring with Bluetooth, works great with iPhone and Pandora

    Cons: Phone speaker is weak

Cons: nothing serious -- would prefer to be able to modify the display text color vs the standard blue LED.

I was debating on wether to review this fine HU or nor as there are already over 380 reviews. I figured, who the heck will read it, but as I read all 380 reviews I figured "why not!". This Kenwood is a great unit. I already had an older Kenwood in my little Aveo, but with the recent purchase of a smartphone wanted to upgrade my car stereo to take advantage of the Blue Tooth and Pandora features. Install was a piece of cake,or "easy peasy" as one reviewer put it. I was actuallully able to use the same wiring harness from the older Kenwood . Idid have to use the new units slip case to get it to lock in, but after talking to a Crutchfield rep, I was told the old wire harness should plug right in to the new unit and all tthe controls would work fine. Yes! They do. The unit it self sounds great. Blue Tooth with the external mic work great. Calls are easy both making and receiving. I read the manual and sound comes thru all 4 speakers.I even set up speed dailing o tthe unit with the presets. A nice feature. All in all for the price I love this baby. Highly recommended!

Pros: Easy install. Great sound.Easy use after becoming familiar with manual.

I used this to switch out from the factory receiver in my 04 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. This was my first time replacing car audio on my own and Crutchfield couldn't have made it easier. I had a minor issue getting the receiver to fit in the housing i purchased but only because i didn't pay attention to sizing, a little dremel worked fixed it all up though. I also replaced my factory speakers with Kenwood KFC-1065S and Kenwood KFC-1365S. A few hours later and I had a much better sound system i did myself with virtually no issues at all. Plus now I can use my iphone and stream music through bluetooth with the receiver and run pandora and everything. Much improved over the factory install.

Pros: Very sleek, cool design great features bluetooth capabilites usb plug to stream music and charge my phone

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this deck for my son's truck. 2001 Silverado. Replaced a Pioneer deck that was in it when we bought it that was awful. This deck had everything he wanted, high power, front, rear and sub pre outs, bluetooth, USB, and Aux input. It was a breeze to install with the Metra GM kit and wire harness adaptor, and the wiring couldn't have been any easier. My only complaint with the deck would be the sound quality of the tuner. It is more sensitive and picks up more stations, but I think at the expense of some dynamic range and separation. Admittiedly, it's a minor quibble, as he listens to very little radio, mostly apps like Pandora, music from his Iphone. It has a unique way of pairing with the Iphone that allows it to very easily access the features of the phone from the deck, and it was a breeze to do.

Pros: Fantastic flexibility, hooks up to anything, and plenty of room to grow the system.

Cons: As I said above, the sound quality of the tuner, but it keeps the station locked in, so it's a decent trade off.

Having no particular preference, I emailed Crutchfield and asked them to recommend an inexpensive unit that is iPod/mp3 compatible. This is the unit they recommended, so this is what I ordered. I installed the unit a few weeks prior to writing this review, so I can only speak of it in short term usage, but nonetheless: Price: not having to spend more than $130 is nice for someone looking to have a basic but fully functional stereo. Installation: I quickly flipped open the manual to double check that my wire connections were correct, though the color coding of wires is basically self explanatory. Pretty easy. Set up and operation: I would definitely describe myself as not being electronically intuitive, but I've been able to set up this head unit to the settings I want and hook up my iPhone via Bluetooth without even having to crack open the manual. The buttons so far make sense, though I have some more exploring to do. Aesthetics: very stylish! This unit's buttons are all lit up with LEDs that change to 24 different colors! It's pretty cool to keep it on default as it slowly transitions through all the colors, but you can also set it to only one color, which is what I eventually did to match it with my dash's color scheme---makes the stereo look more stock.

    Pros: See review.

Cons: Perhaps more variety of stock EQ settings? To be fair, there is always custom EQ, so one can always just put the time in and create their own EQ.

This is a gift I bought for father's day. I installed it in my dad's car and he can't be happier. The best feature for him is the bluethooth connection. In Puerto Rico is against the law to use the cell phone while driving so having the bluethooth is absolutely neccesary. For me the menus are easy to use but it's because this is the third Kenwood receiver I have used, but for my dad he is still learning about the functions. Let me say first off, this reciever looks and feels great. The features are awesome and functionality is awesome. Also, the hookup is extremely easy (This was my first install, did it without 1 issue) The reason I dinged this reciever 2 stars is for its Bluetooth. It basically doesnt work, Im using an Iphone 4s and iphone 5 with it. Pairing it is easy, keeping it connected isnt. I can usually get about 10-15 minutes of bluetooth connection before it loses it and it takes about 5 minutes of power cycling before it can find the phone again. This issue has been posted all over blogs and is a known issue. We just use the usb cord if we want to access the iphone now.

This is a tricky one. I love this stereo it's easy to use! It works great with my keenwood speakers and sound ordinance amplifier after I got it figured out. I had to run 2 channel to the amp on the left side. For some reason the bluetooth only played on the left side so I ran one of the right channels to the other left. Then I had the right speaker's buzzing.. so I figured out I had to ground the right channel output.. I don't know why but it worked. If you are installing this (without) an amplifier for your speakers you will have no problem. But if you are only installing a subwoofer amplifier you won't have a problem... if not I would look an another one. It was a pain but after it all It sounds unbelievably great. If any of this helps I installed this system with keenwood speakers hooked up to a sound ordinance amplifier with alpine subwoofer and amp. My phone is a Galaxy s4

Pros: Bluetooth phone and audio is convenient, looks awesome, sounds great

Cons: Bluetooth was a pain to figure out, feedback till I fixed it

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed into my 2000 Trans-AM. The kit provided was dead simple, just pop it into the radio's included sleeve. I had a question about the power antenna and tech support sorted that out quickly. Just us the AMP power lead for that. The included power antenna lead doesn't do anything, This was actually my third radio, I bought the Kenwood APP radio version and didn't realize it lacked bluetooth. Crutchfield took it back no questions. In my travels I picked up another Kenwood at a local retail store, but it's internal microphone created an echo that was horrible for the receiver of the call. Plus it was more expensive. I finally settled on this model after reading the great reviews. I had a HD radio in the past and found it to be a pain, I read the reviews of the current radios and it looks as if you can turn off the feature but there was some sort of an issue with presets.. I'm happy with the current setup.

Pros: After I installed the radio, I made a test call and the receiver said the call was clear and as good as talking on my iPhone 5. Now my car is loud, lots a rattles / squeaks, I was expecting a So/So statement from the receiver of the call. It charges my phone too, even when just listening to the radio or if its in standby mode. I matched the colors of the radio to the red color of my dash. I liked the scrolling colors feature too. Streaming/BT worked perfectly on ALL three radio's!

Cons: There should be a dimmer lead, you can select it within the radios settings but my original radio was dimmable, Not really a deal breaker.. Not related the radio, but the axxess aswc-1 has a problem with the steering wheel controls on the firebird. The tech support from Axxess doesn't seem to care when you call them, he wanted to give up after a few tries (10). I had to call them twice and it was a unpleasant experience. They could learn a thing or two from Crutchfield. Manual states a problem w/ Kenwood.

This is an amazing head unit! It pairs to my iPhone easily and works with Siri for complete hands free use. The microphone it comes with is great! I have it connected to an external EQ so I haven't really messed with the built in tuning much but it does have a lot of great fine tuning options.

Pros: Complete hands free calling and text with my iPhone 3 sets of 4v preamps Crisp display settings

    Good Receiver For The Price

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So far it has been a reliable receiver. The display is easily visible, even in direct sunlight. The Bluetooth call quality is a bit mediocre over the car speakers, but the people receiving calls claim not to be able to tell the difference between talking over the receiver vs directly on the phone. Bluetooth quality for Pandora is decent. The USB input isn't constant power, so you can't charge devices such as your phone unless you are using the USB source input. The USB function doesn't recognize my Android phone, so I am left using a car charger still. The only additional issue I may mention is that the volume knob is too smooth to casually turn easily. A bit of force needs to be applied to get a good grip. With the way the knob is designed I am a bit wary it may break over time from the extra force. (It wouldn't have been too hard for them to but some grooves around the outside for better grip. Overall, it is a good receiver for the price, despite a couple of missteps.

Pros: - Bluetooth mic is quality - Good value - Easily visible display

Cons: - People calling in over Bluetooth are a bit garbled - USB port does not have the power to charge your phone when not on the USB source input - USB input doesn't recognize my phone - Volume knob is slick

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this for the sole purpose of using my HTC One to play Pandora radio while driving. The bluetooth connection seems weak because the signal will cut in and out quickly every now and then, but it's a fairly rare occurrence. I'm not sure if it's an issue with my phone or the receiver but I would guess that it's the receiver giving me the issue. If you walk out of the car with the radio still syncing to your phone's bluetooth, the connection will cut out for sure. For the record though, once you get the hang of things, playing Pandora off your phone is a nice feature that works relatively well. The only other criticism I have is that getting Pandora to play when you get ready to drive someplace can be a little tricky because you'll find yourself on the edge of whatever wifi network you've been using and your phone will most likely find it difficult to load everything properly since it'll default to the wifi first unless you turn it off everytime. Once you start driving, you'll be completely out of range of your wifi, so the app sometimes will glitch between the transition to 4g or whatever data network is around. If you drive through rural areas often I'd also be cautious only because you need at least a decent 2g connection to be able to skip to the next track and give a thumbs down to any you will inevitable dislike.

Pros: Android capable control of Pandora, Sound quality, ease of install, and look/customization of screen color.

Cons: Bluetooth seems weak, Steering wheel controls will be lost without an adapter which'll run maybe 60-80 dollars on top of what you pay for the receiver.

This deck is exactly what I was looking for. All of the new features, bluetooth and Pandora capability, USB and auxilary inputs on the front. Hands free phone calling, and adequate power. The rotating colors are a really neat feature as well. The Crutchfield instructions were clear and I got it almost right the first time. When I got the blue wires crossed, Crutchfield's experts responded by email within 24 hrs and fixed the problem sight unseen. I couldn't be happier. Now if I can just get the new subwoofer to work as smoothly. Fingers crossed.

Pros: bluetooth and Pandora capability, USB and auxilary inputs on the front. Hands free phone calling, and adequate power. The rotating colors are a really neat feature as well.

Cons: The blue and blue and white wires.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Kenwood has always been considered tier 1 manufacturer as far back as i can remember but i could not afford the quality until the prices came down and the amount of quality and feature set far outweighs the cost. Incredible bargain for the eXcelon series CD/Receiver with Bluetooth AND satellite radio compatible, the decision to purchase the KDC-597 was a no-brainer for me to be perfectly honest with you. All i have to do is think about the SQ from that stereo and i am blown away, from zero - WOW with a twist of the volume knob. I designed my entire car audio system and i am very critical of the sound quality and one of the biggest features that sold me was the 4V preamp, no need for a line-driver to wake up the 5-channel 1100W amplifier. With 6 channels of RCA line-out on the backside it's perfect for the serious audiophile, like me. I would have to sit here all day to brag about all the details i like about this stereo. My goal when i designed this system was to have a head-unit that did everything and i made the perfect decision, compare the KDC-597 qiality and feature set with any car stereo on the market AND in this price range it should be really easy for you to hit the purchase button.

Pros: Hmm, Bluetooth, Sirius/XM, Remote control, 4V preamp is right there at the top of the list along with sound quality, dependability, looks and coolness factor, easy to navigate menu that i learned rather quickly. Much much more to list but i don't know what else i can say that would convince you to buy the Kenwood eXcelon KDC-597.

Cons: Why did i wait so long to get this radio, seriously.

The Crutchfield supplied harness made it easy-peasy to put in, and I have to fight to not be distracted from my driving by this unit's beautiful display. I haven't picked a steady color yet, instead preferring to watch it put on a show. I especially like how easy Kenwood's made it to move through the folders on my USB drive.

I needed a head unit for my new ride and was told by my buddy who will build out my system to look for specific things. This is a very high end yet affordable choice. It has many more features than the average joe will need as well as some little things that you didn't know you needed. For example, each output has it's own EQ settings that are remembered. So when I use my Android phone in the AUX cord, I have to have my bass up much higher than when I play a CD. Each output has it's own saved settings so I don't have to adjsut it each time. Also, installing is a breeze. It was very straight forward, nothing crazy about wires matching up or anything like that.

Pros: Depth of Features Sound Colorful Display

Cons: Wish it had a pad volume instead of a knob...but that's minor

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Such a great deck, and the bluetooth features are amazing! The mic was super easy to wire up and it basically turns your whole car into a phone. Call comes in, music lowers and a green phone button illuminates, you push it once to answer and then just talk normally (no telephone voice needed). You can even call out through the deck to 6 preset numbers with like 2 clicks. Stream pandora from your phone wirelessly, it knows the artist and title, it even does this with the radio through some sorcery I'm not familiar with. For my old car it's the stereo of the future and I freaking love it!

Pros: Bluetooth: pairs simply, works excellently, well thought out menus Lighting: the colors are pretty cool and you can set them up how you want BACK BUTTON - what a good idea, you don't have to go through a whole menu if you get into one, simply back out.

Cons: My wife thinks the buttons are too small and is constantly clicking the volume wheel when she means to turn it. I don't have these problems but i think it's fair to include them in the review

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was my first try at replacing a receiver but since I'm kind of handy at other similar projects, I decided to give it a try and it wasn't too bad. The toughest challenge was disassembling the dash panel without damaging anything. Once that was accomplished, everything else went fairly smoothly although I did need to contact Crutchfield when my AM reception wasn't very good. Turns out I screwed up the antenna adapter wiring. Having wired all of the "same color" speaker wires together , I just went ahead and wired the blue antenna adapter wire to the solid blue receiver wire marked "Ant Cont" without thinking too much about it. The instructions said that the appropriate wire would be Blue or Blue/White so I went with the Blue choice especially since it was marked "Ant Cont". Wrong answer. It's actually the Blue/White "P. Cont" wire which supplies the necessary power to the powered antenna in my CR-V. Once that was corrected, AM and FM reception was great. I also really like the BT Audio and Pandora features which make phone connections wireless.

Pros: Great sound and features especially for the price.

Cons: The large volume control knob doesn't control the power on/off which takes a while to get used to. It's easy to accidentally press the face release button which is directly below the "return" button which is small as are other buttons so it's easy to press the wrong button if you're not careful.

Sounds great combined with Kenwood 6x9 4 ways and 6.5" 3 ways in Dodge Quad Cab. Was surprised at the high sound quality and features vs. the low cost. The phone app quality exceeded my expectations. Mic pick-up and sound quality is excellant on my end as well as the callers. The knob is quite slippery as others mentioned and I will look for a rubber band to put around it for grip. Wish the preset buttons were larger and easier to use and wish the remote control buttons were easier to use - life is too short to listen to DJ's that think they are funny so soon as a song is over and there is talking I channel surf. Installation of radio was very simple, especially with the free adapters. All and all considering the price and quality I give it 5 stars. Now my wife wants one for her SUV. I highly recommend it.

Pros: Powerfull, clear sound without an amp. Looks cool. Front USB and Input. Phone feature is great.

Cons: slippery knob, hard to hit presets on receiver and remote. Wish you could stream station info AND keep the clock on.

I've never installed an after market radio into my car until recently, I must say not only was it fun but it was "easy" Crutchfield sent me everything I needed to install this radio into my car & it was basically plug & play. Only thing that took a while was stripping some wires and tapping them together but that's all color coordinated. This kenwood radio made my factory speakers sound way better, I'm completely happy with it, my future radio I would definitely see what kenwood models crutchfield has in stock.

Pros: Bluetooth, USB, Aux, Microphone, Cd-Mp3

Cons: Wish the microphone was built- in.

The radio is made of like some cheap shiny plastic, feels delicate. It scratches easier than i would feel comfortable with. But the radio sounds good with my stock mach460 audio system. The bluetooth works perfectly! everything about it is just AWE. Its an awesome head unit.

Pros: Sounds good, easy to operate, has all the features you need

Bought this to replace a bad radio in a vehicle I just purchased. I had a kenwood in my SUV and worked great and knew I should stick with Kenwood. I was not disappointed! It has lots of features and a decent sound. I like the radio display of station/song info. I wish there was a way to add the time to the radio scroll, but that's fairly a petty issue. The unit works great with my bluetooth devices. It even comes with a microphrone to mount for the phone. Great stereo infor the money!

Pros: A lot of features for the money. Bluetooth works well with all my Apple devices. Kenwood makes a solid unit.

Cons: Wish the clock would display along with station/song information. Not a big deal, though.

I have nothing to complain for such a feature rich product at USD130. The free kits (faceplate, mounts, cables) from Crutchfield made installation a breeze. There's a little quirk that, when music streaming from my Android phone, sound is routed only to my front speakers. Google results suggest that there might be an obscure setting to fix that. Will look for that setting tomorrow.

    Pros: As advertised.

Cons: Routing the microphone requires some creativity but I'm just nitpicking.

The bluetooth in my Pioneer deck never worked quite right (the phone would always connect, but half the time when a call came in or I placed a call, the deck would show "error"), and it was getting worse, so I decided to look for a new deck. I didn't want to break the bank so I saw this highly rated Kendwood for a cheap price and gave it a try. WHAT A DEAL! I can't believe how happy I am with it. It's really intuitive and produces crisp, powerful, clear sound. I'm no audiophile and I always hated the audio adjustments (like on my Pioneer) that force you to mess with an equalizer as opposed to just changing "bass" or "treble." Well, this Kenwood unit is incredibly intuitive and easy to adjust, yet it gives you tons of options to change the sound down to the nitty-gritty details. There is almost no distortion from my little 6" bazooka sub like there used to be, even at high volumes. The bluetooth works great as well. I've spoken with quite a few people over bluetooth and they all hear me crystal clear. It's super easy to pair a phone, and it always connects instantly when I get in, plus it downloads my phonebook and call history. It makes it very easy to call the people I speak to the most without even touching my phone. The display shows the track names when I stream music over bluetooth (which also sounds ultra-clear) and I can skip/pause/fast forward with the keys on the front. Overall, I love this deck!

Pros: -Incredibly intuitive and easy to use -Bluetooth phone and streaming work flawlessly (note to owners: the default mode for streaming bluetooth is for audio to only come out of the front speakers. You have to go into a sub-menu and change it to come out of all speakers, then it'll sound great) -Audio adjustments are easy and make a big difference. -Audio clarity is great - my sub doesn't distort or bottom out -Colorful faceplate actually looks really classy -Song info shows for Bluetooth & R

Cons: I really can't think of any. This Kenwood receiver is so easy to use that I'm constantly reminded of how difficult my old Pioneer was in comparison. Everything just works right and how I would want it to.

    Quite pleased!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This radio is a GREAT value ! I chose this radio cause I wanted lots of audio features and a detachable face. Im always tinkering with EQ settings LOL. With 8 EQ presets, 3 levels of bass boost ( which i love ) & speaker settings, it really blows all the others away just with that alone. I wanted some extra bass at lower volumes without having to install a sub & this unit provides more than enough for me on the bass level 2. I dont blast the radio all the time cause my right ear starts to hurt when I do. Too many years of loud music LOL. This unit REALLY makes my Polk DB 651s shine. With my stock HU they sounded pretty darn good...but now it sounds awesome. Imaging sounds amazing and sounds like a high end system ( to me ) & trust me I can be very picky with my sound. Clear highs without peircing your ears. The bluetooth was super simple & very clear. I had my wife call me when she was on the road & it sounds VERY clear. I have a 03 Pontiac Vibe & it is VERY noisy on the road even with all my doors sound deadened. If your concerned about bluetooth quality dont be. Doesnt sound like im on speakerphone either. Very nice to be able to match the display to your vehicle & the the variable display is fun to look at night. It doesnt have the modern look of say a double din but if you are looking for lots of audio features this may be your unit. This is my first Kenwood unit & im more than pleased for 130 bucks !

Pros: Audio options, audio options, audio options......This was the ONLY unit that had that many options in this price range. Especially the 3 levels of bass boost. Me likes ! Bluetooth quality & its ease of setup.

Cons: Little cumbersome to flip through settings for me but once I figured it out it was fine. The ONLY con is the slippery volume knob....it is absolutely horrendous ! Im still looking for small rubber band that wont slip off of it. They should have at LEAST knurled the outside edges....with everything so well thought out on this unit, they definitely overlooked something that simple LOL.

I got this because the factory stereo in my Escape can't play digital music. All my music is on my phone, and with the USB plug I thought I would be able to plug my phone into the radio and have in play my music, as well as pandora. However, this only works for IPhones, kind of a crappy design-not everyone has an IPhone. I can use a USB that holds my music and the receiver does fine with that but its not how I would prefer it. Crutchfield was great, they included all the necessary parts for an install, answered the only question I had during the install right away, and I had it all hooked up in less than an hour, and this was my first time installing a car stereo.

I bought this unit wanting to upgrade from a stock unit that didn't even have a cd player. I ask a Crutchfield advisor for a unit that has a cd player and a usb port for my Ipod. While I was waiting for the unit to arrive I went online and watched a few videos on how to replace a stock unit. I found that very helpful also.Received my unit in a few days and begin installing it in my Sonoma. I only had to call a couple of times for tech service but with the reference number on the install sheet it all went very well. Just take your time, follow directions, call if you get stumped. Crutchfield has massed a great library of knowledge and expertise when it comes to installation. Now after it's installed I just have get more familiar with all the features of the unit itself. Being an older person I kinda wish the presets were bigger and easier to find. I do have to say though, I really like the remote control because I can see the buttons better by bringing it closer to my face. All in all, I rate it a 7 out of 10 overall .Crutchfield doesn't build em, but they sure know how to install em!

Pros: Decent sound quality Nice looking install Great value

Cons: An older person or a person with vision problems might want to look for a unit with larger preset buttons.

I love the bluetooth feature. It is a very powerful head unit. and it sounds awesome in my suburban. I am pushing an 8"polk DB8DVC with a five channel V-12, with kenwood mids all throughout. Also when I feel like a bass arsenal, I throw in a couple of 10s in a sealed box. It also has built in sub channel shut off, so if you are riding dirty, the cops wont bother you. Good option package too makes it a good bump for the buck. I wouldnt expect anything less from Kenwood!!

Pros: Bluetooth hands free built in, so you can listen to music and control it without touching your phone, or even your head unit if you get the remote out. Subwoofer channel volume control and switch off/on feature. 4 volts at all preouts can make a good amp sound awesome with the extra punch. It even has a crossover built in incase you dont want to spend a couple of extra bucks on a crossover.

Great value for the money. It was recommended by a Crutchfield Advisor. I was primarily concerned about the Bluetooth sound quality, which others on the end of the phone have told me is very good. It's streaming bluetooth works well and the radio is simple to operate.

I looked every where for a stereo that could give me bluetooth and sirius XM radio at a great price. The online guys really hit one out of the park when they recommended this one to me. It has everything I was looking for, its not too big or bulky, it has amazing sound quality, and best of all it is a really good price. It truly is the PERFECT stereo.

Pros: Bluetooth, Sirius XM, Price, Sound Quality, Display, looks very professional not too "ghetto".

Cons: The only thing that I didn't like isn't even the manufacturers fault or crutchfields fault it is Sirius XMs fault, and will happen with any after market stereo, you have to start a brand new stereo on your account with XM because they will not allow you to transfer a factory radio account to the after market so you end up paying for a new subscription.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I needed a head unit that would support BT audio and hands free calling. For that this deck does well, not stellar but well. I have only had it installed for a few months so I cannot give an accurate reliability rating. I do not like the "feel" of the buttons on the unit tho. The numbers 1-6 feel cheap, like I expect them to fall off or break in the near future. The other problem with the design is the volume knob. My goodness it has to be the slickest know I have ever used on a deck. It can be difficult to get ahold of sometimes, so you must use a precise death grip on it. The other thing is while holding on to the knob for your life you are blocking the view of the display. This is my first Kenwood and I have to say it leaves me desiring more.

Pros: Easy to use BT audio and hands free calling multiple color options for display

Cons: Feels CHEAP knob placement/ Better options out there for the price

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this to replace the factory unit in my 2002 Silverado 2500HD. I have after market speakers is about all. I installed it myself in just under 2 hours. I was rather surprised at how easy everything went together. I used the online service from Crutchfield to originally order my parts. Originally a local car stereo facility recommended a double din radio for my truck. After chatting with the online rep from Crutchfield did I find out I would need extensive customizing to my dash to get a double din in it. I told he the features I was after for a radio, bluetooth, pandora and satellite. Not only did he recommend something cheaper than what I was planning but he created a basket with every part I would need to install it (FYI, half of them they did not charge me for.). As I said before installation was relatively easy. I routed the microphone up into visor and the satellite antenna above the windshield. I called up Sirius, added my new radio to my existing plan and I was set, pairing for bluetooth and pandora was a breeze. Call quality is great on the bluetooth side.

Pros: Very affordable and functional. Set up was straight forward and easy to understand. Very satisfied with purchase and installation.

Cons: The buttons on the front are a tad small. I have a 3/4 ton suspension and its a rough ride. I have to use the remote of the radio because I cant hold my hand still enough to change presets, lol.

Awesome radio! Very easy to install in a 99 Yukon. The bluetooth works flawlessly with my HTC One. I haven't tested the aux or USB because the bluetooth works so well and I love not having wires everywhere but I'm sure they work fine. Got a phone call immediately after installation while I was enjoying the music and call quality was great. I had no trouble running the bluetooth mic and the wire and clip fit right up under the front of the headliner snugly. Would recommend this radio over and over again to anyone! Battled with buying this or one in the 70-90$ range but I figured I'd get all that installation stuff free if I bought this one(that's how they get ya!) and boy am I glad I spent the extra money on the more powerful radio with bluetooth. No amp! About to install aftermarket speakers but this radio makes even my stock speakers come alive. I can't wait to see what the aftermarket speakers sound like. The screen is good, radio data info is great and get's the station names and song info quickly. Setup is good and messing with options and settings is intuitive and easy to figure out. The remote control is VERY handy and with it I can skip forward and backwards through songs on my android during bluetooth music after I pick a playlist.

Pros: Bluetooth is great. VERY simple setup face is detachable and comes with sleeve! easy to use

Crutchfield delivered my stereo in 3 days. The best part was that it came with everything required to install it, plus free shipping. The kit went in like butter in 10 minutes (even a novice can follow this recipe). The stereo sounds 150% better than my stock unit. The sub bumps, the crossover filters work great and there are a few "advanced" settings to fine tune your sound. the hands free function is superb. The Bluetooth connection works flawlessly (I phone connected almost by itself and you can control almost everything with the remote). It was definitely worth $130....

Pros: Ease of install, clear highs, hard hitting kids and lows, 3 sets of pre-amp outputs, external mic for hands free, Bluetooth, remote, access to pandora and Iheart. The Pandora app is awesome.

Cons: Bluetooth music playback quality is a bit muffled sounding.

This is a great BT head unit. The price is unbeatable and the quality is exceptional. I bought this unit to go into my 2004 VW Jetta so I also added the VW adapter, which I would recommend to anyone. Yes, it is $75 but the ease of installation and still being able to use my Monsoon factory amp was well worth it. I wired everything up at my kitchen table with butt connectors and litterally just plugged in a few plugs when I was in the car. Easiest car head unit installation I have ever done. Only tip I have is to read the manual on how to ensure you have BT streaming audio playing out of all four speakers. The factory default is just the front and the setting is in the BT Phone settings.

Overall, this head unit is very well put together and has the essentials. For a non-touchscreen unit, it is very nice. The front aux and front usb plug in is very convenient. The interchangeable color display is pretty astonishing in regards to the extremely wide variety of color selections which can match most of the current "in" colors. The back button is a great option compared to other models and years that you must wait a few seconds for it to go back. Sound quality is AMAZING! I never thought that my 03 350z could actually sound this much better with just an updated head unit. To make things even better about product, it cost UNDER $150, which i great considering it is compatiable with iPhones 1-5(Not 5S), it have Bluetooth streaming with either iPhones or Android systems, and Pandora Controls on the face of the unit makes changing the song even easier than having to taking your eyes off the road just change the station or go to the next song. There is Bluetooth calling is also another plus for a non-touchscreen

Pros: Bluetooth Streaming, Pandora controls, Bluetooth calling/answering, front aux input, front USB plug-in. Color changing variety. Audio controls for every aspect of sound. Bass control to every extent. Easy installation. Physical "back" button.

Cons: Ground wire would be longer. Mic wire is a pain in the butt to put in place. The station scan option skips a few key stations in the area. If the "Play" buttons and other non-lit buttons should be back-lit.

I was originally looking just for a way to add an AUX port to my factory head unit, and in searches for an adapter stumbled upon the X597. Turned out to be a very happy accident, as this receiver is packed with features for the price. Bluetooth and USB control work flawlessly with my iPhone 5, hands-free calling at a button press, the lighting matches my factory dash, and it drives my RF amplifier/speakers way better than the stock head. I'm not an audiophile and I don't tune my equipment with "pink noise" or any of that, I just like what sounds good to my ear and this receiver sounds great even at no-kids-in-the-truck volumes. Menu interface is intuitive - once installed, I tweaked my settings without having to reference the manual. (To the guy who only hears his Bluetooth audio through the front speakers, that's a menu setting. You can select "Front" or "All" for Bluetooth, and the default is "Front". Change that setting and rock out wirelessly, my friend.) Easy install with the harness/trim and instructions, and follow-up customer service was fantastic. They answered my amplifier grounding question the first time I called, and the 2nd time they shipped me 2 free ground loop isolators when I was experiencing a "pop" through the speakers when changing inputs, which eliminated the noise with no sound degradation. Great product, great experience - thank you, Crutchfield. I'll be back when the warranty expires on my wife's car!

Pros: Great sound Bluetooth audio from your phone and hands-free calling 4V RCA outputs - front, rear and sub iPod/iPhone control and charging

Cons: AM/FM radio reception not great, but about the same as stock unit, so that's probably my truck's fault Grounding "pop" when changing sources/songs - fixed with an isolator from customer service

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this receiver because I was looking for something to replace my factory stereo with its burned-out FL display and non-functioning tape player (which I used with a tape adapter to play my iPhone through it). This is one decision I won't regret. I was looking at the outlet deals on the Crutchfield site for this model but because none of them priced over ~$115, the installation gear was going to push the unit over the price of getting it new, so I sprung for the new unit. Installation was easy-peasy, thanks to the free accessories and clear documentation (along with matching colors on the harness adaptor). The hardest part was routing the cable for the microphone but I now have it mounted right where I want it, thanks to fish tape. At first I thought the unit or wiring adapter was defective because I wasn't getting audio out of the rear speakers (BT Audio mode) but found the advanced setting to enable all four, thanks to one of the other reviewers of this product. I love the FL display and can't wait to bolt on some amps and a sub to get some extra warmth and range out of my music! The only thing the OEMs do better is to make the Bass/Treble, Fader/Balance controls more accessible for quick adjustments. So far, no issues with iPhone 5 on iOS 7.0.6.

Pros: FL Display, Bluetooth audio, high quality sound, expandable via 3 sets of 4V preamp outputs

Cons: loudness and audio controls take wading through menus

I installed this unit on an 06 mustang to replace the stock 500W Shaker unit. I wanted to be able to play audio from my phone and to answer calls without actually touching my phone while driving. Unfortunately, I can't do either as is explained in the cons section. The install was pretty straight forward. Only issue is that there is a metal plate in my mustang that interferes with the RCA cable plugged into the pre amp outputs. This means the unit is not entirely secure and it sticks out a little. Not two big of a deal though, I might try to get some RCA cables with a 90 degree bend in them to solve this issue.

Pros: aux in works fine, so I can still do most of what I wanted with this device, except I still have to interface with my phone while driving. Besides what is listed in the cons section, it does everything as expected

Cons: -doesn't recognize a nexus 4 when plugged into the usb input. -there is nothing output to my subwoofers, when playing audio from my phone over a bluetooth connection, so I always just use the auxilary input instead. This makes the bluetooth and pandora interface pretty worthless. -The microphone supplied with the unit has to be within a couple inches of my mouth for the person on the other end of the line to hear me. The mic is clipped to my sunvisor now, but is ineffective there.

    Great deck

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A great stereo with good sound. Don't let any of my cons talk you out of it. I like it better than the Pioneer deck I had with HD radio. I replaced the factory deck in a 2003 F150, and I had to replace the speakers. Since doing that, it sounds great. The menu system isn't complicated, which is welcome after using a Pioneer deck in another car.

Pros: Bluetooth Mic pickup. Sound quality (once I replaced the factory speakers) Key color selection (not as good as the Pioneer but I was able to find a close match the the color and intensity of the other factory buttons). Ease of menu operation except as noted in Cons. Ease of connecting a bluetooth device. Other decks are much more complicated, and are so much so that once you figure out how, you think "Why isn't it always this easy?"

Cons: No illumination lead. You have to either manually dim the buttons each time or settle for a dimness that is bright enough for day and dark enough for night. I was actually able to find a perfect balance, but I shouldn't have had to. No variable text colors. Crutchfield lists the color as white, but it's that 'blue' white of modern LEDs. It's attractive, but I'd prefer to be able to set it. Some menu items are hidden, and the deck has to be put into standby mode to access them. No HD radio

I have only praise for this stereo and my Crutchfield experience! Soon after purchasing the KDC-X597 I received an email with installation instructions that clearly detailed how to remove the console panels and install it. Super easy to follow. The most time consuming part was matching up the various wires for the wiring harness, but in 15 minutes or less it was ready to go. The KDC-X597 sounds excellent! I bought this unit for 3 primary reasons: 1. iPod support 2. Bluetooth phone 3. Radio 4. CD player. OK, I really required a CD player it wasn't one of the top 3 reasons. iPod support is the reason I give the unit 4 stars instead of 5. Plug the iPod into the front panel and it immediately goes into Kenwood mode, and the iPod is now controlled from the head unit. Finding what I want to listen to on the front panel is tedious and almost impossible whilst driving. It works fine for music, but I enjoy listening to podcasts and it is a chore to find the programs I am interested in. Doing this on the iPod itself is really easy, but control is all done by the Kenwood once it is connected. Phone support is awesome for my Motorola dumb phone. The microphone is very good and delivers clear sound. And I can hear the conversation really well. Navigation takes a little getting used to, but it works well. My Crutchfield advisor told me the radio is the weak spot on most modern head units, but I was pleasantly surprised at how good it is. Very pleased with my purchase!

Pros: Bluetooth support, sound quality, ease of installation.

    Cons: iPod navigation

Great value sound system. Excellent Bluetooth capability. Wish it was just a little easier to access EQ functions. FYI. I have a 2004 GMC so I had to buy the gms04 chime/ onstar adaptor which made installation just a little more complicated. Just follow the directions. Didn't think to check for a dimmer wire so the stereo can dim with the rest of the interior lighting. Much better sound than the factory stereo and that's using the same speakers.

Pros: Great value. Bluetooth advises of incoming messages as well

    Cons: No dimmer wiring.

I got this unit to replace my older Kenwood stereo. I wanted one with bluetooth capability. I was not disappointed. I did notice that if i connect to my phone to play my music and I push play on the stereo it doesn't diplay the correct song title. However if I push play on my phone first then control with the stereo it displays correctly. For some reason if i use the remote to skip back and forward in my play list it quickly starts jumping around. Skipping forward only with the remote works very well. All in all, i love this unit and since my last stereo was a Kenwood it plugged right in...awesome.

First of all, I researched and researched before purchasing this unit. I at least wanted Bluetooth &SiriusXM capabilities. At first I was hesitant on picking this model because of reviews about the knob having no rubber or grip when turning & and the time not being able to be displayed. The time factor was a issue for me as I'd like to read the time and not just other display read outs. So with the unit being on sale, I purchased this Kendwood unit and to this day, I'm a satisfied customer. Awesome head unit with a lot of features. Bluetooth pairing was quick and easy. Audio steaming and phone calls are outstanding. Like the fact I can match the color display with my dodge OEM green cluster. USB reads flawlessly. Have not had experience yet with SiriusXm as I have not purchased the separate tuner. About the time ordeal, you can set what you want to be displayed by settings and the display button. Overall great unit!

Pros: -Bluetooth -USB -numerous color display options -sound quality

Cons: -Decrease in local FM signal -Almost no AM reception -Sound quality is so good, makes you want to upgrade your whole setup $$

I have owned and installed several aftermarket stereos. Of the Different Sony and JVC stereos that I have used, this Kenwood is my favorite. The user interface is fairly simple compared to other radios. My favorite feature is how the Bluetooth hands free calling works. The stereo keeps your five favorite numbers and makes it very easy to dial them with minimal button pushing. On a similar note, I couldn't get Siri (iOS7/iPhone 5S) to work with this radio in the store but it works great once installed in my car. It takes about 15 seconds to connect with your phone via blue tooth from the time that the unit turns on after starting your car. My biggest complaint about this stereo is pretty much the same one that I have with all after market stereos: How about making the pause/play button and other buttons larger than two grains of rice? You would think that someone in the design world would be able to make this happen. Overall, this is a solid piece of equipment.

Pros: Ease of use and reliable blue tooth connectivity.

Cons: Buttons are way too small.

The Bluetooth capability works well and is handy while driving. I have streamed pandora and music stored in my iPhone 4S and it works great! The Siri integration also works well. I plugged in a USB flash drive loaded with music loaded by artist and album. I found online a program called "Kenwood music editor light" that will analyze the files on your flash drive and create a folder on the main directory. By doing that, the x597 can quickly read and find your music files. It works awesome. Overall I am really happy with my purchase from crutchfield. It is a great addition to my car.

It just works! Install was a easy. Everything fit just right - no cutting or filing. Price was the same I paid for stereo/tape system in the 80s. Sound quality is superb, even with the factory speakers. BTW I put it in a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the Infinity system. I lost the steering wheel controls, but the remote makes up for it. The original CD changer in the back died a few years ago and I have been living with SD card to FM modulator for entertainment until I installed this Kenwood unit. The MP3onCD player ensures that I never have to listen to a commercial again.

Pros: Price. Sound. Flexibility. Quick delivery. Looks good in the dash with the included mounting bezel.

Cons: Screen washes out in moderate sunlight. Clock is hard to read. KW should make it bigger. Inclusion of crimp-splices or wire nuts for the wiring harness would have been a nice touch. The soldering and electrical tape connections recommended are messy. Electrical tape gets crummy and gooey in a hot dash here in Texas.

I LOVE this head unit! I have always been hesitant to put in aftermarket sound system, afraid I would screw something up. My buddy told me about Crutchfield. I couldn't believe how EASY they made it to install this thing! The sound is Amazing! I put speakers in first so I can see if there was a big difference. WOW its night and day. Set the EQ to your preferences and turn it up! Blue tooth was a breeze to hook up and use for phone and audio. I use Pandora and the sound quality isn't as good as a CD but all you gotta do is crank it up. I used Pioneer speakers front and back. Sounds great! Bottom line....ditch the stock sound system! Don't be scared to install yourself. I listened to the rear speakers for 2 years in my truck because the junk stock front speakers blew out.

Pros: Looks cool Easy to use Sounds AWESOME Blue tooth is great

Cons: No time display. At least I can't find how to set it to display in the manual. You can set it but can't see it.

    I works great.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have had this for about a month now and I think that I have played with it enough to give it a review. As of right now, I love this unit. It was really easy to set up and to use. I am not the most tech savvy person but I set it up and can navigate the settings and features with ease. I never opened the instruction manual for setup. I am using factory speakers and this unit really brought them to life. I was going to change them but after this addition, I will be sticking with the car's factory speaker setup. The Pandora bluetooth is great. I just turn it to pandora and it does the rest. I love the fact that it works with an Android, especially my Samsung Galaxy S4. I use the bluetooth audio setting to listen to class lectures while I am driving, no usb cable needed. I would buy this unit again and I would certainly recommend it.

Pros: Easy to use. Additional power really helps my factory speakers. Bluetooth Pandora. Bluetooth audio.

    Cons:

Great Sound and options..huge upgrade from stock

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Up in Northeast Ohio and one of the coldest days I feared what I might get into when the package arrived at 4:30. Crutchfield install help and all the tools made the job extremely easy. I soldered all connections from harness to radio harness so that took some time, but even doing that the entire install took less than 2 hrs. No doubt next system will be ordered from Crutchfield. Looking forward to adding Amp and Speakers next.

Pros: Ease of install with directions made for my car. The value for the money and recommendation from tech was excellent.

Cons: Had to go get (1) small $.50 bolt from hardware store to fit the back bracket of radio for support.

Great Head Unit for the price

The radio looks and works great! I love the color display and the functionality of the radio. Thanks Crutchfield!

    Pros: Very easy install

Installed the Kenwood Excelon KDC-X597 in my Tundra last week. So far I'm happy with the sound improvement over the stock head unit. I like the looks, sound quality and functionality of this head unit.

Pros: Looks good, sounds good. I like all the custom settings.

Cons: Volume/function knob is slick, it has no serrations or rubber on it which makes usability a little difficult.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Shopped around local stereo shops, including Car Toys and several other stereo "city's/Kings"... etc. Why does it cost $400/$500 to install a $150 stereo? Decided to try it myself with a purchase from Crutchfield. I'm super pleased with site and the flawless approach to matching up all the parts I needed to complete the install on my specific vehicle. The parts matching and the master data sheet installation for my specific car gave me the confidence to make the purchase for my DIY installation; and the total price was half of what I had been finding. The X597 is a great unit; looks great, sounds great, and loaded with features. The 22 watt RMS pumps out more power than most other units. The bluetooth pairing to my phone (BlackBerry Z10) was painless and took only seconds. Loving the BT call/answer abilities. I even have the android Pandora app installed on my BlackBerry (leaked OS 1925) and I flipped when I selected Pandora as a source on the X597 it started Pandora on my Blackberry and started playing; awesome!!! I'm a CrutchField fan; coming back here for my next purchase.

Pros: Great unit; looks great, sounds great, and loaded with features; Bluetooth works flawlessly.

Cons: Nothing to complain about; missing the screen real estate of a double DIN.

    I love this stereo

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this to replace the factory radio in my 1994 vehicle. I already had a Sirius receiver and love that this has an auxiliary input to bypass the FM channel that gives it a much cleaner sound. I also love the USB port so I can plug in my phone to charge and use the Pandora app. It is also very handy to be able to make and recieve calls with the phone connected via bluetooth. All in all, this is a major upgrade from the factory radio!

Pros: USB and auxiliary inputs. Bluetooth connection.

Cons: Had to lose the controls and the back seat DVD player, but the kids are older and it had not been turned on in quite some time.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this to replace the cheap factory stereo in my Nissan Frontier truck. Wow what a difference in sound quality. The installation was straightforward and relatively easy. The mounting bracket that came free from Crutchfield was not the best quality but it still worked. The instructions were very clear and specific to my vehicle. I have a Nokia windows phone and was a little nervous about it pairing up with unit but everything worked perfectly. My phone paired up the first try and Pandora works flawlessly over the wireless bluetooth connection. I also love that my text messages can be read to me and I can respond without having to fiddle with my phone while driving. I would highly recommend this Kenwood unit if you are looking to upgrade or replace a factory stereo.

Pros: Great sound quality, looks cool, easy installation, bluetooth connects perfectly

Cons: Controls take a little getting used to but not that difficult.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

If your looking to replace/get your first aftermarket radio, this is the product for you. This head unit has very simplistic controls and the navigation through the menus is a breeze. Anyone with a mild understanding of electronics can figure this thing out. *Side Note* Once connected through bluetooth, access the BT settings and find the label that adjusts the sound from Only Front, to All. The instructions manual is very user friendly. This Head unit exceeded my expectations.

Pros: The improved sound quality is a great plus, and the wide variety of visual display options are quite interesting.

Cons: will fit in a 2004 Buick Lesabre, requires cutting a hole in the plastic wall behind stock radio, and also trimming a small sliver off the main trim piece, not very noticeable, this isnt really a con either, more like a side note to the very few people who actually have this car, lol.

This is my first Kenwood HU. I purchased it because it had all of the features I needed(no more cd's in my truck!). I already put some kicker 6x9 and Dynamat in my doors. But the factory stereo had no power. I put this in and Wow! what a difference. So much louder. And nice and clear. It looks really cool and has tons of features. Bluetooth syncing and calling work flawlessly. And the included dash kit and antenna adapter from crutchfield made it easy to install. I would definately purchase this again.

Pros: Lots of features.Bluetooth syncing.Usb input on the front. Looks amazing.

Cons: None that i can think of.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This head unit was recommended by a Crutchfield advisor and I went with her advice for a factory replacement in my 2002 Avalanche. Overall, I am happy with my purchase. Install went pretty well for a first time installer. Install wiring directions were spot on with the exception of having to patch into the secondary factory pigtail in order to power the factory amp that I didn't even know existed. 45 minutes of Googling and reading Avalanche forums got me back on track. 3.5 hours for an install of the radio and front door speakers counting the 45 minutes of research. See Pros and Cons below. The cons aren't deal breakers, but they are issues that I had to experiment with in order to use the features intuitively. There is a learning curve.

Pros: Bluetooth connection works great! One-button hands-free call answering works great and calls are clear. Remote mounted microphone works well. Contacts Import Sound Light and color display

Cons: Main volume and settings knob feels a little slick and doesn't have a good tactile feel and also feels a little fragile. Menus take some repetition to understand and figure out. Other buttons are rather tiny. One button/Hands-free calling is clunky when calling from the Phonebook or the History.

Pleasantly surprised with the ease of installation of this radio. Basically a "plug and play" install in my MB 380SL with the included adapters. No problems at all, quality product, good sound even with existing stock speakers. Love the Bluetooth phone app, and Pandora features. I am by no means technically inclined, but instructions are easily followed.

Cons: Users with fat fingers (me) might have problems with the small buttons on face.

I installed this into a 2001 Yukon XL and with the easy to follow instructions from Crutchfield it was a breeze. So far we are extremely happy with the product and is fairly easy to use. The features of this receiver are a great value for the money and with the Bluetooth capabilities the kids love it. I would recommend this to anyone and soon I will be talking with a Crutchfield rep to help me upgrade the speakers even though just having this receiver made the quality and sound improve over stock tremendously.

Pros: Great features for the price

Cons: I guess if I have a con it would be that the buttons on the receiver are a little small but I believe that is something that a person gets used to with use and familiarity.
