Kenwood Excelon quality

If you're into sound quality in your car, Kenwood Excelon receivers feature hot 4-volt preamp outputs for your amps and an impressive array of sound-sculpting tools. This Kenwood Excelon KDC-X598 CD receiver uses built-in Bluetooth® to bring hands-free calling and audio streaming to your vehicle. And Kenwood backs up this versatile receiver with a 2-year warranty.

Bluetooth lets you concentrate on driving

Bluetooth gives you hands-free calling convenience, plus a wireless connection to the songs stored on your compatible music player. If you're an Android® user who's grown tired of your old radio's complicated Bluetooth pairing issues, this receiver's simple, secure pairing (SSP) technology will make your life easier. If you're an iPhone® aficionado, the KDC-X598 gives you full Siri Eyes Free control with compatible iPhones.

Once you're paired up, you can talk hands-free by simply touching the dedicated "phone" button when a call comes in. And the receiver can alert you when you receive text messages, which you can read when you're out of the car. You can install the external Bluetooth microphone in a good spot inside your vehicle for superior hands-free communication.

Kenwood KDC-X598 CD receiver

Stream radio from your phone

If you listen to Internet radio on your iPhone or Android, you can use this receiver's controls to play music from Pandora® and iHeartRadio® Internet radio. You can scroll through your stations, bookmark songs, and give a thumbs-up or thumbs-down right from the receiver's face. And speaking of radio, you can add a satellite radio tuner to this Kenwood, and get into the in-depth music and entertainment programming provided by SiriusXM.

The sound and the display

The KDC-X598's 3-band parametric equalizer lets you adjust the centerpoint of your treble, midrange, and bass controls. You can use the low-pass frequency filter and phase control to tune the bass going to your subwoofer. You can also adjust the variable-color display so this Kenwood looks right at home in your dash, while dust covers protect the CD slot, aux input, and USB port.

One versatile USB port

The receiver's front-panel USB port allows you to access and control the music stored on your iPhone or Android phone. And the port can handle MP3, WMA, or WAV music files on a thumb drive too. Here's a nice feature from Kenwood — Drive Change allows you to connect a memory card reader or USB hub to the Kenwood's USB input and select music from up to five memory cards or USB flash drives.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?

In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Kenwood Excelon stereo. Connect a few wires, program the adapter for your car and this Kenwood, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

iPod/smartphone note: If you're going to use your iPod or smartphone with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for compatibility information.

    Truly Horrible Unit!

Won't stay connected to bluetooth, truly horrible from Florida on 2/18/2015

Well this sounds good enough, but no matter what I do it will not stay connected to bluetooth. It connects and then almost immediately I get a message that says"Connection Unsuccessful make sure that kenwood KDC-X5** is in range". I have paired this many times. I was told to reset the head unit which I did and it still does not work. Do not waste your money on a kenwood!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have always bought Kenwood receivers and this is another great one. I was mainly looking for something that would connect and work well with my phone. This receiver has done just that. It will also allow me to expand later when I want to add a sub and maybe satellite radio. The only thing I don't like is that you have to scroll through too many sources...maybe I just haven't figured out how to turn off the options I don't use.

    Pros: Great value for features

Cons: LCD screen doesn't display when cold. (Comes back as vehicle/radio warms up) Remote pointless - too small to hold and use with one hand

Awesome deck. Lots of features but not too many to confuse you. I love the low and high pass filter settings! Sound quality is twice as good now! 50x4 channel amplifier built in to the deck! For the price it's an awesome buy! To get just a 50x4 amp for the price. Don't hesitate to buy!

Pros: Settings, built in 4 channel amp, sound quality, color changing face...

Cons: Thing around the faceplate was too big and I had to change a setting to get my rear speakers to work with Bluetooth

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this receiver to replace the factory stereo in my Ford Fusion mostly to add an amplifier without tapping into the factory wires. This is the best cd player i have ever owned. It made the factory speakers sound so much better than they did before. I had planned on replacing the speakers as well but after a little adjusting i may not need to. The best part of it is probably the Bluetooth. It has worked flawlessly. If i have one complaint it is probably the display isn't very easy to read in the daylight but it isn't as bad as i was expecting based on other reviews i read. All in all its a great cd player. I don't think i could have made a better decision purchasing it. If you're thinking about purchasing it just do it. You won't be disappointed.

    Pros: Usb port and bluetooth

    Cons: Small display

Great sound - buttons tiny and challenging

    ShenValley from Virginia on 1/12/2015

Whoever designed this did not have the "average" person in mind....the buttons are so tiny and jammed together that it's really hard to use, especially when driving. I have to keep the manual right next to the unit and refer to it all the time just to figure out how it works. This was obviously designed by and for the tech savvy person who loves to play with equipment. I love to play and listen to my radio - not just get frustrated by too many tiny buttons! It was also a real downer to have to purchase something else and pay for more installation to be able to use my steering wheel controls. But the sound is excellent and that kinda makes up for some the things I do not like about this stereo.

Pros: Excellent sound quality; aesthetically pleasing (except for the small size of the unit); quick installation at Crutchfield with super warranty

Cons: Buttons are tiny and jammed together; simply cannot read stereo during daylight hours unless it's cloudy and I'm not wearing sunglasses; stereo itself is so small - why not make it larger to fit where my original stereo used to be, instead of making me purchase a "filler" box to use up the rest of the space??

    Great upgrade!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This stereo is a great upgrade giving Bluetooth, usb and an aux input for android, i pod/phone etc. This stereo has alot of functions if you are adding a sub and an amp. My son has the same one thus why I bought it. I am only using the stock Toyota amp and speakers for now. It sounds great. No more cassette tape adapter needed for listening to Pandora or ???

Pros: Bluetooth, USB and AUX input. Great power output.

Cons: Alot of settings that are great for someone with an aftermarket sub and amp but maybe too much for some without the need or the knowledge of such settings!

    2001 GMC Yukon XL
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this on sale from Crutchfield for my son for xmas. Came with all the extra installation stuff, which is very nice. We just installed it in our 2001 GMC Yukon XL (same as Chevy Suburban) and the install went perfectly. Good instructions from Crutchfield and great phone support. However, neither Crutchfield nor Kenwood manual seemed to discuss the connection of the factory subwoofer. A call to Crutchfield cleared it up; the subwoofer gets its signals from the speaker outputs. No need to connect the subwoofer output RCA jacks on back of the Kenwood. However, we were informed that we must connect the power control output wire that signals the external subwoofer amp to turn on. Once all that done, a test turn on before final install showed that everything worked first time! We completed the install into the dash very quickly and easily and my son started to enjoy his new stereo. Huge Difference!! If you are in doubt of buying a new stereo, even a relatively inexpensive one, then don't hesitate!

Pros: Ease of installation, great Crutchfield customer service, loud sound volume, great sound quality, matches well with the Sony door speakers and subwoofer that we bought last year from Crutchfield.

Cons: Directions regarding subwoofer needs improvement.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I really like Kenwood products. Their products are built tough. During my 4 million miles plus of trucking, Kenwood products outlasted the other brands I have tried. I installed this unit in my wife's car and it looks and works great. The owner's manual can be a little overwhelming for some old brains like mine but I figured it out. One gripe I have is that the remote control is ridiculously small. There is no good reason to make the remote so small since it will spend its life in the car or truck. It's made for a 5-year old child's hands. This unit is still a great buy and I would buy another if I needed one.

    Pros: Great Product

Cons: Remote control is too tiny.

I bought this for the Bluetooth and XM. when I bought the deck the xm tuner was just $10 more. The sound is much better than the stock unit this replaced. The menu and setup are a bit complex but with all the features this shouldn't be a surprise. if you are concerned about the install don't be. with the wiring kit and instructions and the sales advice from Crutchfield I was able to get this deck installed in about two hours. the hardest part was running the XM antenna through my dashboard.

    2001 Honda Accord
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Nice radio. Installation was simple and setup was pretty straight forward with one caveat. The default audio setup for Bluetooth is to play only through the front speakers. It took a bit of digging to find out that you need to enable it for all speakers by going to functions -> bt mode -> bt hf/audio and change it to "all". Why it's not set to all by default defies all logic. Another small issue from the user experience standpoint is that scrolling through sources takes you from tuner -> Pandora -> iHeart radio -> BT Audio. So if you want to go from tuner to BT Audio, the "Kenwood Music Control" app will start both Pandora and iHeart radio on the phone whether you like it or not. The BT audio issue, dismal "Kenwood Music Control" app, poor Android integration and firmware updates that are impossible to find led to the three start rating. If you have an iPhone that you're hooking up via USB you can disregard this review. That works fantastically. Why manufacturers pander to a phone that has half the market share of Android is a mystery, but I digress. Kenwood are certainly not alone in doing so.

Pros: Nice radio. Installation was simple and setup were easy. Good manual

Cons: Poor support for Android. Call audio quality is mediocre.

    Awesome Unit.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is one of the best head unit I ever had. I Always had been a fan with keenwood headunit recievers. I noticed it had a big change of sound coming out of my speakers so loud and clear after switched out the pioneer unit. Number one reason I brought this unit because i was looking for something with 6 pre-amp outputs that i intend to use in the future. Second reason for blutooth which connects perfect everytime I use it. The phone I have is the Galaxy s5. As soon the radio turns on will get notification on the phone asking if want to connect the blutooth. Can also hook up 2 devices and 1 audio streaming to blutooth. This unit has many different colors to change the display. Display is very clear even in the daylight time without putting brightness to its max. The pioneer unit I had before I couldn't see the display during the day and I hated that! This is a great head unit. I'm very satisfied with Crutchfield they have many choices and explains everything in detail and they have better quality units than would have got something at the big box store or the discount store. Seems like they sell outdated stuff compare what Crutchfield have in stock.

    Pros: 6 pre-amps outputs(4-volts). Blutooth, colors display options. EQ-pro.

    Cons:

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I needed a new head unit for my 3rd gen 4Runner that wouldn't cost too much. The installation was easy and the extra power makes my stock speakers sound a lot better. I don't even want to upgrade them for a while. The unit is incredibly easy to use and set up. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a single-din head unit, it's well worth the extra $20 that you would spend on most of the other ones.

Pros: Easy installation. Variable color to match your vehicle. Very stylish design. Great power output.

Cons: Haven't actually come across any yet. You really get what you pay for though.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great head unit with a lot of features. I put this in an older F150 with Ford's "premium" sound system with built in amp. I had already upgraded the factory speakers to Polk DB570's. I bypassed the built in Ford amp when I installed this receiver and I am glad I did. The sound quality is awesome. It will push the speakers MUCH higher than the factory head unit and with much more clarity. This is a very modern and attractive unit as well. The bright color display looks very good at night, but as with all aftermarket units I have seen, it can be hard to see in the daytime. Bluetooth connection is relatively fast and very stable. Calls are very clear and no one I have talked to can tell I am talking to them on bluetooth. Being able to connect multiple bluetooth devices at once is one of the things I have been impressed with most. Switching between those devices to play bluetooth audio is the one area that I will take a point off though. To do this, you have to go down about 3 to 4 levels in the settings, deselect the current device, then select the desired device. You can not safely do this while driving, especially in the daytime fighting glare. With a head unit this advanced, there should be an easier way to do this.

Pros: Tons of features, very clear mic reception for bluetooth calls

Cons: Need an easier way to switch between connected bluetooth audio devices.

After several months of "investigative research", I finally narrowed my choices down to two head units, then finally picked the Kenwood, and I'm glad I did. The installation was way too easy and the fit and finish has resulted in a flawless and seamless installation. Looks absolutely professional. No problems at all and tweeking all the settings just took a little time. No effort at all. My only issue is I always find it a little frustrating when I purchase and item, then two weeks later it goes on sale. Oh well, still got a super deck for a great price.

Pros: Easy installation, even with the Sirius Tuner and microphone. Easy to program and customize to your particular ear and desires. Looks awesome at night with the different color schemes. Remote is kinda nice, keeps you from looking down at the deck but I really won't use it a lot.

Cons: Haven't really found any yet, and probably won't. I'm super satisfied with this unit and the finished outcome.

Love the stereo... do have to agree with the majority of the reviews that state that the display is hard to read in direct sunlight... its darn near impossible and I have tried numerous color settings.. Bluetooth takes awhile to connect but once it does no issues staying connected, have never had a disconnection yet.. One thing I don't like and I am not sure if its the stereo or my phone that is doing it but when running Pandora all the phone displays is the Kenwood connection screen, would love to have the Pandora window open showing the artist etc.. Artist and title do show on screen.. but as already stated display is really hard to see.. Definitely recommend and would buy again..

Pros: Plenty of connections for after market amplifier, plenty of choices for music whether it be Pandora, USB or tuner.

Cons: Display hard to read in direct sunlight, bluetooth slow to connect,

I wanted to upgrade the radio in an older Ford Escape in order to play my iPod and I wanted Bluetooth for the phone. I didn't want to have to modify the dash or change out the factory speakers or the subwoofer and I didn't want to spend a lot because of the age of the vehicle. The Crutchfield advisor recommended this unit. It came with everything I needed to do the install (except for crimps that I added to the order). The install was fast, relatively simple, and the unit looks and sounds awesome. What an upgrade! The price was very reasonable with fast and free shipping. Doug G. from Charlottesville, VA on 10/20/2014

I was upgrading from a factory radio, and was kind of amazed how bad this was - I know Kenwood has a good reputation and this was recommended for me. The sound overall remained tinny and harsh, no matter how much I fooled with the equalizing options - and I fooled with that a lot. It was considerably worse than my factory radio, and by the way I have good speakers - I upgraded from my factory speakers a while ago. The controls were awkward to use, and the terrestrial radio tuner was just amazingly bad. The FM was just bad, with more static than my factory radio, and the AM radio literally sounded like there was no antenna attached. Even strong local stations I could just barely hear. I even took out the unit to check if my antenna cable was securely connected, and it was. I returned this an bought an Alpine for around the same price, and the Alpine is great - night and day difference.

    Pros: Looks okay.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This receiver exceeded my expectations. It was easy to install with Crutchfield's supplied cables and instructions and a bit of technical know-how. I installed it in a 1997 vehicle in order to get up-to-date features in the car radio and electronics, but did not obtain the optional Pandora receiver. Car radio instructions are fairly clear and controls fairly easy to operate -- but complex enough that you'll have to read the manual. I am able to play audio from a small 8 GB USB drive, which is awesome because of how many songs can fit on it. You can access folders and files fairly quickly with the controls -- so make sure to store songs in folders that represent albums or groupings that are important to you. CD player works fine. I was able to link my android pad to the unit to play music via Bluetooth. This was done easily and had great sound quality. I installed the car microphone through the dashboard, up the window column and placed it on the ceiling above the car mirror. It linked easily via Bluetooth to my iPhone and audio quality of phone calls is great for those on both sides of the conversation. The receiver includes control of microphone gain, echo, and another parameter, but the defaults seemed to work best for me. Of course, incoming calls mute and pause existing audio. The receiver automatically downloads your contact list, recent contacts, and some other information so that you can make calls directly from the receiver controls.

Pros: Many features (radio, USB music, Bluetooth music, Pandora, iHeart, CD, etc.). Looks great. Fairly easy to use, good audio quality with many equalizer adjustment options.

Cons: In some intermediate lighting conditions, I noticed the display could be harder to see, but I may not have figured it out yet. Great in the dark. Great in bright light.

The radio sounds great and I love being able to integrate my phone for car use. Probably the one thing that I don't understand is the way the clock displays or not. When you are driving down the road I doubt that you would care what the name of the song is playing from my IPOD or what track it was. But I almost always want to know what time it is. The clock should be the primary display or at least the option to choose that. It comes with a remote hand unit which If I'm driving down the road I don't know what I would do with that. If they would have taken the money needed to develop a hand unit and fixed the clock display it would be a top rated radio. Quality is top notch no question. I don't think for the price that it's to much to pay for this but I will have to purchase an additional clock to tell time with.

This product was very easy to install with the addition of "Metra 70-7001 Receiver Wiring Harness". Fit snugly in my car radio slot as intended and functions great. For those that don't use iHeartRadio or Pandora (like me) the sources can be disabled. I primarily got this unit for its bluetooth playback feature and hands free calling. Both work great, I can stream music to the radio via bluetooth as well as answer calls while driving without using my hands.

Pros: -easy installation -easy to use (comes with a manual in-case you're unsure about something) -nice display (variable colors or preset by user) -I'd say good sound quality but that is more determined by the speakers. Offers a nice range of audio tuning (equalizer etc...) -good array of external inputs (auxiliary and USB as well as bluetooth)

Cons: -My only gripe is the microphone isn't built into the radio unit itself. It's a long wire that connects to the back of the unit so you must run the wire somehow to the front panel (meaning the mic is behind the radio which is behind all of your car's paneling). My car happens to have plenty of holes through which the mic can be brought to the front, but I don't know about others. The microphone works so well that there really was no reason not to have it embedded in the unit itself.

The stereo is sharp looking while not too flashing to get it stolen. I purchased it because it is very affordable and has Bluetooth for music and phone - hands free use. Siri does all the leg work, ha!

Pros: I like the auto changing of the lights. Easy installation. Good setup. Inexpensive.

Cons: It is annoying waiting between sources, such moving through Pandora, Bluetooth, Auxiliary, etc. There needs to be an easy skip button between those sources. May be I am not reading all the directions thoroughly.

An amazing value for an outstanding product, especially when sold and backed by Crutchfield. Helpful advisers guided me through a couple of tricky steps during installation. Biggest drawback is the "glare factor" of the display whenever there is bright ambient light, and the somewhat byzantine file organization of the USB input.

Pros: Super sound, reasonable radio receiver

Cons: Display very difficult to read except under the lowest of ambient light conditions. Navigating the USB files (built w/ Kenwood Music Editor Lite) awkward and non-intuitive. Buttons small.

This honestly is one of the best head units I have ever purchased for my own use in terms of sound quality and options list so far. I have always used Alpine and Clarion in the past and they served me well, especially the Clarion as it lasted practically an eternity; if this Kenwood Excelon unit lasts half as long I will be superbly pleased. The sound from this thing once you get it dialed in with their "Pro EQ" is astonishingly clear and precise. If you don't know how to utilize and set a parametric eq, just download a quality RTA app and do a little bit of research and your ears will thank you. Truly impressed. This unit has to have one of the better DACs I have heard from the major brands. Starting from a flat eq it needs very little tweaking to get natural sound. Your other equipment and interior environments play a role as well obviously but this gives a great starting point. The BT audio and call functions work very well and once you have your phone(s)/device(s) paired it reconnects automatically each time you get in the car. No fuss. Call clarity is excellent on both ends. While on a call you can adjust mic gain, echo cancellation, and noise reduction to fine tune. People on the other end have no idea I'm in the car. Pandora and iPod control spot on as well. The overall controls are very easy to learn and use. The variable color display helps match the interior lighting almost perfectly with one caveat, it's hard to see in bright daylight. Love this unit.

Pros: Sound reproduction. Parametric EQ and other audio controls. Call quality. Pandora control. Variable lighting. 6 @ 4V pre-outs. I honestly like it so much we're probably ordering another one for our Mercedes C240 as well.

Cons: Display rather difficult to see in bright daylight. FM reception (but I don't really listen to the radio anyway). Wish the EQ settings could be persistent throughout all the different input options, it's a real pain to dial it in 4 or 5 times over.

I read a ton of reviews on this site and other sites before buying this unit. It was replacing the factory installed unit in my BMW 3 series wagon which died after 12 years. I was excited to be able to finally have hands free calling, a USB port to charge my iPhone, song tracks on my display, etc. I was surpassed how small the unit is vs. the BMW factory unit. The buttons are tiny and really close together, and I'm a woman. I would imagine this would be an even bigger problem for men. As many reviewers mentioned, the display is hard to read in the sunlight. I need to play with the dimmer some more, but some colors are just about unreadable (e.g. red). I haven't had it long enough to review the sound quality, but I'm definitely disappointed with the design.

Pros: Kenwood brand name. Decent sound quality. Lots of programmable options. USB port on front. Supports Pandora. Easily pairs with iPhone Seems as if it's pretty easy to program and set up

Cons: Station buttons are too close together. Display setting are really hard to read in the sun. Finish is kind of gangster.

This radio only plays Bluetooth out of the front speakers for some reason while every other setting does all speakers, the brightness of the screen isn't good at all even with the settings put all the way up, if the suns shinning good luck reading your deck. The appearance looks nice though.... Volume at the highest (35) is horrible... I bought 4 3ways to go along with it and they sound distorted when I turn the volume up when the Crutchfield rep told me they would slam, very disappointed !!! I've installed and setup other brands, but Kenwood is my go- to brand for my own rigs because of their quality and value. You simply won't find another player at this price point with this many solid features. My only serious complaint about this model is it's display visibility. If you set the color and brightness just right you -can- read it, but I've found that the real problem is glare - the face is curved, and so shiny it reflects like a funhouse mirror. I've thought about getting an anti-glare smartphone protector to trim and cover the screen to see if that helps. The sound output of this thing is great; better even than other excelon players I've seen. Unless you upgrade to something with a 5 or 7 band eq, you're not going to get more customization than this, and the internal amp performs way above its pay grade. I bought two of these, one for my car and for my wife's. We both primarily use the BT audio. They connect up and play wonderfully with her iPhone and my HTC One. It also works with my wife's no-name android tablet. In my car I'm using Excelon 6x9/6.75's and its pure bliss, and even the oem speakers in my wife's caravan sound decent with this player. This player is firmware upgradable, ours both shipped with the most recent version, (June 2014) It's worth considering this when reading reviews about compatibility issues. Crutchfield's research tab has good, detailed info about how this will work for you.

Pros: High quality sound. Excelon features give lots of control over sound. Compatible with all my devices. Menus are easy to learn/use. Nice remote control.

Cons: Display nearly impossible to read in full sunlight. (I Gave it a lower usability score because of this.) Lots of sound customization options means long setup time.

Sounds great, and has more capabilities (sound/amp management) than I'll ever need. Only complaint is the lighting is too dim. The dash angle of the CRV makes face plate tilt slightly up toward the driver. Because of the gloss finish of the face plate, it catches and reflects the glare of day light. The lighting is not bright enough to over come this and is nearly impossible to see with polarized sunglasses on. Tinted windows would eliminate the glare. Background: Audio Enthusiast; Long time Kenwood User; Electrician Been using Kenwood Head Units all my life and still have to say that they are the best around when you take into consideration the features + sound quality + sound tweakability. I bought this head unit in order to dive into the new world of bluetooth car audio (which is great btw - no more wires or cds or usb drives + infinite music with pandora). I have a Droid 4 with an Auto Bluetooth Connection app to force the bluetooth connection to this head unit everytime I get in the car. I also have the Smart Actions set to only turn the bluetooth on during the times of day I am in the car. In my opinion this headunit is a huge step down from their previous products. You'd think time would make products get better not worse. For this price I would expect more from Kenwood.

Pros: - Bluetooth from the BT Mode works well and quickly. - The audio tweaking capabilities are still up to the Kenwood par which is what Kenwood Fans love.

Cons: - Bluetooth connectivity with Pandora is horribly slow as well as iHeartRadio. Most of the time I have to manually unlock my phone and turn Pandora on. - The remote which comes with all Kenwood headunits (which has made Kenwood so great) is extremely slow and sometimes is not even detected. Idk what Kenwood changed between this version remote and the last but the response time has gone downhill quite a bit. - The screen at full brightness (full white) is extremely dim (only visible at night

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is my first Kenwood deck, it replaced an aging Pioneer deck. I sought direct USB connectivity for thumb drives and Bluetooth hands-free abilities, but the 4V outputs and other bonus features definitely peaked my interest. Overall, the deck was a good choice. Immediately, I could tell a major (and I mean significant!) improvement in the sonic quality over my older aftermarket deck that I probably paid twice as much for 10 years ago. After a bit of tuning, that disparity became even wider. Installation was pretty easy, the documentation relatively clear and navigation mostly intuitive. Bluetooth works great, audio quality is satisfactory both ways and my overall impression was money well spent. The display is not as bad as I thought it would be, but in direct sunlight, it's nearly impossible to read. The variable color is cool, but many are even less visible. I originally had concerns about navigating large numbers of folders on a USB stick, but it's not too bad..but it is a bit cumbersome to find one album amongst hundreds of folders on a large USB stick. (Cellular remote integration would be nice!) I also wish there were more display choices...the 1.5 lines is more like 1.25 lines, more scrolling and display outputs would be welcome. My biggest gripe, though, is that you can't do a 80Hz LPF for a sub with an equivalent HPF on the four speaker outputs, you're limited to 85/120 or 120/120...so you either send higher Hz to the subs, or you lose around 35Hz.

Pros: Superb sonic quality 4V Outputs USB thumb drive compatibility Decent documentation Bluetooth handsfree / impressive integration Bluetooth radio integration Looks sharp Easily tuned Good price for features ratio Lots of options to play with

Cons: Display hard to read in sunlight 1.5 display lines is somewhat limiting I expected a better display for a mid-range deck "Auto" text scroll option delays scrolling frequently Drive EQ is hard to figure out HPF/LPF aren't set where I'd like (80/80 or 85/85)

    2002 Nissan Frontier
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this as part of a larger upgrade for a 2002 Nissan Frontier, to replace the standard am/fm/cd player. I have used Kenwood decks in the past, and this one fit the requirements - CD player, am/fm, Pandora compatible, USB port and bluetooth hands free. Installation was easy with the supplied dash kit and wire harness. I took extra time to solder and heat-shrink connections. The hardest part was installing the bluetooth microphone in an unobtrusive spot. In the end, I took the a-pillar trim off and threaded it up to the top-left of the windshield. Initial EQ and display settings left something to be desired, but once I'd set the display to one color and flattened the EQ on all bands (it came set to +6dB on bass, mid and treble) it sounded pretty good through Polk door speakers and factory a-pillar tweeters. Paired with the truck owners Android phone over bluetooth first time, and the phone auto-connects when the vehicle is started. Call quality is good for both the caller and the driver. Pandora and bluetooth audio works well, and it will also playback Audible audiobooks from the app on the phone using the BT Audio input. I loaded a 32GB USB micro thumbdrive with 320kbps MP3 files. Searching and selecting is easy, but it's easy to get ahead of the deck when scrolling through a long list and it can take a few seconds to catch up and show names instead of numbers.

Pros: Good sound though all sources. Display is informative. Was able to set white illumination to match the truck. Bluetooth call quality is very good, as is bluetooth audio streaming. Plain looks are a bonus - no chrome or other bling to call attention to itself.

Cons: No illumination dimmer, and display could be brighter at times. Main control knob is slick, and can be difficult for someone with long nails to use. Out of the box EQ settings are a mess; need to set everything back to 0dB gain before listening, and do that on all sources. Need to use Kenwood Music Editor software to prepare a thumbdrive to allow searching.

I have been playing with car audio for a little over 15 years now and I must say that this unit is a pretty good bang for the buck. 4v preamp outputs are a must for a 4ch amp. Plus, I personally like a separate sub preamp output and the fact that this unit allows me to set a lowpass xover that I can adjust from my driver's seat( and not having to contort myself to reach and adjust the amp under the seat). There is also an adjustable highpass xover that is pretty handy because nobody want low freqs to muddy their midrange. Setting this thing up wasn't too difficult, however, I have been doing this stuff for a while and I am very familiar with Kenwood heads and amps(don't buy their speakers, go with focal and you won't be let down!). I must add that this is the cheapest head that I have ever purchased and the only reason I did, was because it was purchased for my father's budget limited beach buggy chevy tahoe. All in all, this is a good clean signal producing head with just enough features to make a ride sound decent.

I've been a fan of Kenwood a long time. I've never had any of home receivers and car receivers fail. So I figure keep with what's working. This unit was easy to install, east to initially set up, and the pairing the Bluetooth was a breeze. For $150, you get a lot of bang for your buck.

Very happy with this unit, coming from an Alpine head previously. I wanted something that had an intuitive user interface for my iPod as I drive in some fun traffic here in the DC metro area and was tired of changing CD as my mood changed behind the wheel. My only complaints are minor, but the same as most of the others that I've read, the screen is very difficult to read if the sun is out. I'm not sure how hard this is for the folks at Kenwood to fix, but while they are at it a knurled volume knob would be nice too.

Pros: Great sound, Intuitive user interface, lots of options

Cons: Panel difficult to read in sunlight.

    2000 Dodge Durango
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This made the 14 year old speakers in my parents' Durango sound like they were top of the line speakers (I compared before and after). All of the countless features work flawlessly, and it is very easy to use once you understand how the menu system works. Even my 50+ father quickly learned how to navigate menus, change settings to his preferences, and use each input. Each input reconnects automatically when starting the car back up (even bluetooth - give it a minute to re-establish the connection!), remembering right where you were on a song and everything. Hands-Free calling (and voice commands with Siri) work like a charm! Hands down the best stereo I've used. As many others noted, it is difficult to see the display in the daytime, especially if it's tilted upwards toward the sunlight like it is in the Durango. To counteract this, ensure that you have your display brightness all the way up (to 31) and change the color to "User" and customize the color to be bright white (R-9, B-9, G-9). This helped a lot! It can quickly be changed back to your favorite color at night with just a few clicks. If you're looking for a quick and easy replacement that will play audio from any source you'd want (Bluetooth, CD, Radio, Aux, USB, iHeartRadio, Pandora, Sirius XM, etc) then this is the stereo for you! I'd also recommend giving your current speakers a chance with this radio before replacing them - like mine, this stereo may give your stock speakers a fresh breath of life!

Pros: Sound Quality, Ease of Use, Features, Compatibility, Numerous Preset EQs, Hands-Free capability, 1.5 line display

Cons: Slightly hard to see display during the day

I installed this head on my sailboat and had some install questions that were fully answered by the techs at Crutchfield. This is a great system, with very good sound. I had it installed by Dashboard Audio, whom did excellent work.

Pros: Didn't know it came with Blue Tooth, which works great. It arrived in just a couple of day(5 day before expected). Even though it came with wrong connections, I would buy this set again.(Last radio I got from Cruchfield was for my 1987 Escort & cost $500 in 1988 , it worked for 15 years). I expect this one to last as long.

Cons: Can't see display in day light. Came with wrong mounting ass. (my was single connector & they sent a double connector.

I shopped local custom audio shops and decided on this particular Kenwood KDC-X598 Stereo. Just for kicks I went online to see what it cost there. Crutchfield was almost $100 less for the exact same model. Then I got worried that maybe I couldn't install it on my own. The online installation videos and tech support convinced me otherwise. I actually called Crutchfield three times during the installation just to confirm I was doing it right. The tech guys were great and walked me through it giving me the confidence I needed. Installation in my suburban took about an hour start to finish and my wife and kids were very impressed. So was I. Thanks, Crutchfield. You've got a life-long customer now.

Pros: Easy installation, quick delivery, excellent customer and tech support!

Cons: None--really. This was as good an online experience as I've ever had.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great head unit, I chose this over all the other sub $150 units after much research. Very easy install. The basic functions are quite intuitive, and there are a bevy of advanced options if you are inclined to adjust them. I still can't believe the horrible state of displays in single DIN head units in the year 2014, they've barely progressed in 20 years. But that's all the big names, not just Kenwood. I actually find myself using the bluetooth call feature, people say it sounds fine. There were some minor issues with DIN adapter fitment. The mounting sleeve is made of horribly cheap potmetal and they expect the standard bending tabs to hold it solid - I see this probably needing to be addressed in the future (it will definitely rattle loose). And the Metra DIN adapter they send is flimsy - significant flex using the source/power button. Still, overall this is a great unit for the money. "It just works."

Pros: Sound quality, ease if install, build quality of the actual unit seems solid, easily customized to your own preferences, plays nicely with Android, looks pretty sharp with plenty of backlight color options. It's mostly good stuff.

Cons: The mounting sleeve is flimsy and doesn't line up with a single DIN adapter in a way that allows the finish bezel to fully seat.

This radio seems nice. It is definitely an improvement over the old factory radio I had in my 2006 Honda Ridgeline rt. I like the extra adjustments to bass and treble and the bass boost and loudness made my factory speakers come to life.and the FM tuner is a ton better than my old stock unit. I will say however that it is hard to see in the daylight at all. Any color. Out of 24 colors I have to have one color at full brightness to be able to see what the screen is projecting. Also if my hand bumps the unit at all it makes screen go away And come back right after. And as stated the clock is useless due to being as tall as a dime literally.

Pros: Sound is great, color options, bass boost and loudness. Also love the CD and USB and aux dust covers built in. FM tuner and awesome Bluetooth connectivity with droid maxx.

Cons: The screen has to be on one of 24 colors at full brightness to see at all hardly in daylight, seems to fade out and back in quickly if bumped. I guess I just felt like this radio would be a little better for the money spent on the unit.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First, I love the semi-parametric EQ this thing comes with. It has a 3 band Low/Mid/High EQ and the option to control the target frequency for each band. Second, I love the Pandora integration with my HTC One M8. I can Thumbs Up/Down and change stations from the receiver. It also launches Pandora automatically when I start my 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Third, I love the hands free blue tooth integration. Mine is set to auto-answer a call after 3 rings . I can also push and hold the phone button for voice activated dialing. This thing was easy to install. The hardest part about installation was figuring out where I wanted to place the mic and then routing the cable. I ended up cleaning the steering column and using the adhesive the mic came with to stick it behind the wheel. Hasn't fallen off yet. I had a few complaints about the call quality at first but boosting the gain on the mic and boosting a little noise reduction (both controlled from the receiver) improved the clarity. I have two complaints. 1: The display is absolutely worthless in any kind of daylight. You're gonna have to memorize what the buttons do. 2: I think my unit is slightly defective. After a while the display will blink when u touch it, like a loose wire or connection somewhere. Nothing happens to the sound though. It's minor enough to not be worth the hassle to RMA. I still gave it 4 stars because the thing does what it's supposed to do and does it well.

Pros: Easy to install. Great EQ options. Blue Tooth. Pandora control from the receiver.

    Cons: Buggy interface. Worthless Display

I put this new head unit in my C5 Vette to replace an older Kenwood that didn't have bluetooth capability. The difference in the shape of the lens over the display makes it nearly impossible to see the display in any light. I'm not happy at all about that. The fact that I can only set the clock to display as a tiny little 4 digits at the bottom of the display sorta stinks too. Basically, regardless of the lighting, if it's daylight, I have to hold my hands over the display to see anything. I also think the text on buttons is far too small, it takes too much time to look and see what you're pressing, there's room for larger text. Do they not realize that these things are used by people while driving a car??? And, before someone thinks I'm old and senile, the 3 year old Kenwood Excelon I replace with this had a very easy to read display and controls that I could see what they said on them. The lack of contrast of the display, and the lack of contrast of the lettering on the display make this thing basically useless from the front panel. It's a good thing I'm used to Kenwood layouts or I'd never control this thing. And worst of all, if you enter the menu it uses a nice white lettering on the multi-color display. Unfortunately, that color is NOT available to be chosen as one of the 32 in the menu?? Crazy. Basically, I'm not at all happy with this purchase.

Pros: Very nice sound. Nice integrated amp that seems very clean. Mic and stuff for bluetooth is included.

Cons: Vacuum Florescent display sucks. Controls are not all similar to previous generation head units, so now I have 2 head units in 2 cars, both Kenwood, but they use two different control methods. (same buttons do different things). I don't care what direction you're driving, if its' sunny or not, if it is daytime you can't see the display without shielding it from light from above. If it isn't hidden under your dash somehow from light above, that curved display lens will have glare.

I've used many different big name brand stereos. I love Kenwood Excelon decks for their usability and sound control, and not to mention some really nice displays. Using Crutchfield makes installing a stereo super simple and doesn't require a professional installation if you're a novice. The thing I love about Crutchfield is that they include required installation materials like a wire harness that connects to your factory harness and if your vehicle has a custom bezel, Crutchfield includes that as well. I recommend Crutchfield to everyone looking for car electronics!

Pros: Ease of use, installion materials, sound quality! Bluetooth is awesome, no more cords for my iPhone/iPod.

Cons: I dont currently have any!

I don't have any issues with this unit. I really like the Bluetooth feature for answering phone calls. Works great. FM radio stations are easier to tune in and are stronger than the stock radio. All in all it's very nice. I didn't rate very high for coolness factor. Just another single din receiver to me. Do these things really have to cost this much? I spent over $270.00 for my package.

Pros: Easy to use, great Bluetooth, good reception.

    Cons: None

    Pretty good car stereo

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The receiver is overall a nice one. I have some minor issues. To cycle through the random option on the usb , it only does a folder random, to do all random, you have to hold in the button. You should be able to cycle through all of them by pressing the button and not having to hold it in. The color change is a nice feature, I was able to match my interior lighting pretty well, but was surprised there was only one shade of red, but multiple shades of blue, green, etc... Some of the buttons are small, but I can still use them. It does have a lot of sound control, and the radio tuner works well. It was very easy to connect, but im having trouble getting my cell to work with the Bluetooth (I guess it does not work with all phones). I have had all Pioneers before, so this takes some getting used to, but I would recommend this to anyone who asked.

Pros: Very stylish. Easy to hook up.

Cons: Buttons are small. Could be more colors to choose from.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The reviews read that it works with Iphone for pandora. What it should read is that it needs to be plugged into the head unit for it to work. Did not know that prior to order. Also when bluetooth links up, slowly, it does not start automatically and requires you to press play for your content to stream over bluetooth. Perhaps this is a setting but I cant seem to find it. The sound quality is very good. The amount of adjustments is astounding compared to 10 years ago. This is hooked up to an alpine amp, 6x9's, 5 1/4's that are driven by the amp and the 3 1/2's driven off the head unit. The sound is seamless. There is no discernible tell between the amp music and the head unit sound.

Pros: Plenty of adjustments, lots of color and brightness options.

Cons: Does not do pandora and iphone without cable hook up. Does not auto play on bluetooth once it connnects. The bluetooth connection takes longer than what I'm used to sometimes upto 30 seconds.

This is my first Kenwood head unit after mostly sticking with JVC. Overall, it is a really good value and I have found that the Bluetooth connection to my iPhone to work flawlessly. The external microphone works great and reception is very good. It was easy to install and with the Crutchfield instructions and included adapters it was a breeze. Looks great and sounds even better!

Pros: Great sound, good Bluetooth connection and easy pairing. Quality product

Cons: Buttons for navigating the preset stations are a little small and difficult to select, particularly when driving.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Wanted to like it and sound quality was definitely excellent. However, the reason I returned it was because it took forever for it to autodetect my wife and I's iphones (4 and 5s) through bluetooth. That was a deal-breaker... not for me, but my wife since she drives this car. Got the Alpine CDE-154BT and it solved the shortcoming of this Kenwood unit. Still, overall a good unit but not for me.

    Pros: Sound quality and looks

Cons: Bluetooth response too delayed when reconnecting with head unit.

I purchased this unti to update a 20 year old Kenwood unit in my 89 Mustang. You would expect a better unit due to the advanced technology, and this unit does just that. More than twice the power and a tuner that grabs stations clearly that the previous unit couldn't even pull static on. Makes the entire system sound significantly better. A real batgain for the price. Oh, and the wiring harness from the old unit still worked!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is my first Kenwood that I have ever owned (always bought pioneer until now), and I am impressed with the quality of their product. I have listened to I-heart radio and sirius/xm on our recent roadtrip to LA, and let me tell you its nice having more options to listen to than radio espanol when out on the highway. I highly recommend this deck if you are upgrading from a stock system. I upgraded my 2000 suburban and the family loves it! The bluetooth connection works flawlessly with my phone and tablets, as my son watched a movie all the way in the 3rd row and had no issues with it dropping out. Connects up to my android devices without a hitch. Thank you, Crutchfield, for turning me on to a new brand with outstanding quality.

Pros: Android device connectivity, sound quality, sleek look, hands-free calling all spot on.

Cons: Sirius-xm a little bit of a pain to use. Wish it had a connection for the stock dimmer so that it matches the interior illumination. Seems to have issues picking up bluetooth when a device is on top of it (dash/windshield) vs. In front of it.

I was looking for an all-in-one radio that had Bluetooth & Satellite Radio and this one fit the bill at a good price! It was easy to install. Great sound and the hands-free phone sounds good too.

Pros: Great price. Easy to install. Great sounding radio. Hands-free works and sounds great.

Cons: Just a minor con: When I switched my Sirius subscription to this radio, I had to upgrade to SiriusXM as this radio is made for only SiriusXM. It's a little more money, but with this new subscription I now have access to online listening.

I installed this unit on a Mitsubishi Galant with Infinity system and the difference is from ground to sky. I think this unit almost duplicate the power, voice and loudness of the factory stereo. The good thing is that Crutchfield sent me the wire harness to use the Infinity amp for free. I can't wait to change the factory speakers for a real bang.

Pros: Bluetooth for music and calls. Iphone/Android friendly. Pandora,......

Excelon Series: The KDC-X598 CD receiver is part of Kenwood's Excelon series line-up. It incorporates the latest technologies and delivers the highest sonic performance. From advanced audio tuning capabilities, crossover and equalizer system, high-voltage preouts (4V), plus a two-year warranty - Kenwood Excelon represents exceptional audio quality with long-lasting dependability.

16 Bit D/A Converter: The Kenwood KDC-X598 utilizes a 16-bit digital to analog converter for superior sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The Kenwood KDC-X598 is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit. The power output specs for the KDC-X598 are as follows:

    • Full Bandwidth Power: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20-20kHz, 1% THD)
    • Maximum Output Power: 50 watts x 4 channels

6ch/4V Preamp Outputs + Sub Control: The KDC-X598 features front, rear and subwoofer 4.0-volt preamp outputs. The front and rear speaker preamp outputs are balance and fade adjustable. The subwoofer preamp output is non-fading. The Kenwood KDC-X598 offers the following subwoofer controls, when you are using unit's subwoofer preamp output.

    • Low Pass Filter: The receiver features a built-in Low Pass Filter control for the preamp-output, when the output is set to Subwoofer. You can select from 85 Hz, 120 Hz, 160 Hz, or off.
    • Subwoofer Phase: You can adjust the phase of the subwoofer output between 180-degrees (Reverse) or 0-degrees (Normal).
    • Subwoofer Level: Once the Subwoofer preamp output is activated, you can independently control the subwoofer preamp output level (-15 to +15) from the CD receiver.

Front & Rear High-Pass Filter: The KDC-X598 features a High-Pass Crossover for the front & rear channels when your front & rear speakers are connected by the unit's speaker-outputs or preamp-outputs. You can adjust the high-pass crossover from "Through", 100, 120, or 150 Hz. The "Through" selection is a full-range setting.

Speaker Settings: The Speaker Setting function tailors the head unit's audio settings according to the type of speakers in your vehicle. You may select a Speaker Setting of 'SP-Off' (flat/off), 'SP-OEM' (for OEM factory speaker systems), 'SP-6x9/6' (for systems with 6" and 6"x9" speakers), or 'SP-5/4' (for systems with 4" and 5" speakers).

EQ Pro: The KDC-X598 is equipped with Kenwood's EQ Pro. The integrated equalizer offers 8 preset sound modes (Rock, Pops, Easy, Top 40, Jazz, Natural, Drive EQ, or User) suitable for the music genre of your choice. The Drive EQ mode is an EQ preset that helps reduce road noise. The User mode allows you to manually adjust the head unit's 3-band parametric EQ (Frequency, Level, and Q-Factor).

    EQ Pro
    FrequencyLevelQ
    Bass60, 80, 100, 200 Hz-8 to +81.0, 1.25, 1.5, 2.0
    Midrange0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.5 kHz-8 to +80.75, 1.0, 1.25
    Treble10.0, 12.5, 15.0, 17.5 kHz-8 to +8Fixed
Note: You can store EQ Pro bass, middle and treble tone settings for each source (Disc, Tuner, Aux, USB, iPod, and Pandora/iHeart Radio).

Sound Enhancements: The head unit provides further sound enhancements for your car audio system.

    • Bass Boost: The Kenwood CD receiver features a Bass Boost control that can be set to the following levels (BB1, BB2, BB3, or Off).
    • Loudness: This function enhances low and high frequencies to make the sound clearer lower volumes. There are 3 levels (LV1, LV2, or Off).
    • Sound Reconstruction: When MP3 or WMA files encoded at a low bit rate (less than 96 kbps, 44.1k, 48kHz) are played, the Sound Reconstruction function restores their high frequencies so the sound quality is closer to files encoded at a high bit rate. The processing is optimized for the compression format and the bit rate used. When Sound Reconstruction is Off, the unit plays the original sound stored in the audio file.

Volume Offset: The level of each source may be independently adjusted to prevent radical leaps in output volume when switching from one source to another. The available settings range from -8 to 0 (-8 to +8 for Aux source).

Key Beep: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

    Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth Technology: The Kenwood KDC-X598 is equipped with built-in Bluetooth (ver. 2.1 + EDR) allowing you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

    • Hands-Free Communication: HFP 1.5 (Hands Free Profile), OPP 1.1 (Object Push Profile), PBAB 1.0 (Phone Book Access Profile).
    • Audio Streaming: A2DP 1.2 (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP 1.3 (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Kenwood KDC-X598. Visit Kenwood's Support Site for a complete list of compatible Bluetooth enabled phones.

Secure Simple Pairing (SSP) + Auto Pairing (for iPhone): With Secure Simple Pairing (SSP), you can easily pair a Bluetooth enabled phone to the Kenwood KDC-X598 without having to enter pin codes or go through complicated settings. When a paired Bluetooth device is in close proximity to the receiver, the auto connection function automatically pairs the two units. You can pair up to five Bluetooth-enabled devices to the Kenwood head unit with a maximum of two Bluetooth phones and one Bluetooth audio player connected at one time (but only one can be used at a time). You can even pair your Apple iPhone by simply connecting it to the Kenwood head unit via USB and following a single prompt on the head unit's display.

Hands-Free Communication w/ External Mic: The head unit supports Bluetooth hands-free communication for your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone. The controls of the KDC-X598 can be used to dial a number, answer an in-coming call, or end a call. The unit also includes an external microphone (featuring adjustable gain), so you can carry on your side of the conversation while listening to the caller through your vehicles speakers. During a conversation, you can switch between the Private Mode (talking directly on your cell phone) and the Hands Free Mode.

    • Answering a Call: When a call comes in, a ring-tone will be heard through your vehicle's speaker and the caller's name or phone number will be displayed. You can answer the call from the head unit's front-panel controls, or setup the head unit to automatically answer the incoming call immediately or after 1-30 seconds. The KDC-X598 also supports the Call Waiting function, so you can answer another incoming call while suspending the current call you are on. Your compatible cell-phone must also support this feature.
    • Dialing a Number: Using the KDC-X598, you can dial a phone number in one of the following ways:
      • Entering a Phone Number: Allows you to directly dial a phone number up to 32 digits from the head unit's control knob or remote control.
      • Speed (Preset) Dialing: Allows you to register up to 6 phone numbers for quick dialing. The preset numbers can be accessed from the head unit's Control Knob.
      • Phone Book: You can dial by using the downloaded phone book. You can download phone book data from your cell phone to the KDC-X598. Up to 600 numbers can be stored for each registered cell phone. Each number can be up to 32 digits long and each name can be up to 50 characters long. Stored phone numbers can be categorized by General, Home, Office, Mobile, or Other. You can search each category of the phone book in alphabetical order.
      • Call History: The Call History is a list of calls that have originated from and were received by this unit that you can dial. You can select Outgoing, Incoming, or Missed calls.
      • Voice Dialing: If your mobile phone supports voice recognition, then you can dial out by voice command. Simply speak into the included microphone.

Note: The external wired microphone offers improved audio quality versus an integrated microphone, so you can be heard easier over noisy traffic and road noise. You can adjust the volume level and noise cancellation of the microphone without affecting the other sources. The external microphone features an attached 10' cable terminated by a right-angle 3.5mm connector which plugs into the mic input on the rear-panel of the head unit. The microphone offers an integrated mounting bracket which can be clipped to your vehicle's sun-visor or taped to your dash. The external microphone measures 0.525" (diameter) x 1.505" (depth).

SMS: If your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone is compatible with SMS (Short Message Service), the Kenwood head unit will notify you when a message has been received. You must then use your phone to check the message. You cannot read, edit, or send a message through this unit.

Wireless Audio Streaming (w/ Metadata Display): The Kenwood KDC-X598 also supports wireless audio playback (AD2P) and control (AVRCP) of a Bluetooth enabled audio player or smartphone. The KDC-X598 will be able to control basic playback functions of your Bluetooth device's stored music; such as Play/Pause, Skip Next/Previous, Fast Forward/Rewind and Random/Repeat. The head unit will also display your stored music's song information; such as Artist name and Song/Album title. The KDC-X598 also supports audio streaming of music apps downloaded on your smartphone with metadata display and limited control. Advanced music control of your music apps will still need be done via your Bluetooth-enabled smartphone. When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call. Once the call is finished, your streaming music will resume.

Siri Eyes Free Control: When paired and connected with an iPhone with Siri via Bluetooth (not USB), the Kenwood KDC-BT858 has the ability to access Siri through its front-panel controls and external microphone. Simply press-and-hold down on the head unit's Answer Button to engage Siri and use the included microphone to communicate with Siri. Siri's voice will heard through your vehicle's speakers. All Siri functions including hands-free calling, music search, setting reminders, text-messaging, audible navigation, and more can be done through the KDC-X598 and its microphone. The head unit's display will only indicate hands-free calling and Bluetooth audio information (all other functions of Siri are only audible through the Kenwood KDC-X598; visual data will still need to be viewed from your iPhone device).

Note: You can ask Siri to get directions to a destination and the turn-by-turn instructions will heard through your vehicle's speakers, while the on-screen map still displays on your iPhone with Siri. The head unit's audio is attenuated while Siri provides audible directions.

    Disc & USB Playback

Disc Compatibility: The unit features a single disc player that will playback CD-Audio and finalized CD-R/CD-RW audio discs. The unit also supports playback of MP3/WMA music files loaded onto CD-R/RW discs. The CD slot is hidden behind a manual fold-up cover which blends in the front-panel of the head unit.

Front-Panel USB Port: The Kenwood KDC-X598 features a front panel USB (type-A) port that is hidden behind a flip-up cover. The USB port enables connection of a portable USB mass-storage class (MSC) device; such as select Android smartphones (Froyo/Gingerbread OS only), portable digital audio players, or USB thumbdrives. The USB ports support audio playback and control of MP3/WMA/WAV audio files stored on these portable USB mass-storage class devices. USB portable audio players that can be charged via USB will be charged when plugged into the CD receiver's USB ports (max. 1A), and the vehicle's ignition switch is set to ACC or On.

Note: When a mass-storage class (MSC) compatible smartphone is connected to the head unit's USB input, the unit's Drive Change features lets you select its internal memory or external memory (such as an SD card) for stored music playback. The Drive Change feature also lets you switch between multiple memory cards (up to 5) in a USB multi-card reader or multiple USB thumbdrives (up to 5) connected to a USB hub.

My iphone charges when connected to the usb port of my Kenwood, i dont own an android, but dont see why that would be different.[ RUSSELL  Nov 26, 2014 ]
No clue about android phone compatibility but the text is impossible to read in any form of daylight, independent of the color of text chosen. Frustratingly, the color of white that the text appears in when in the menu is very legible, even in the daytime but there's no option for selecting this color. The "features" are completely non intuitive and require carrying around the owner's manual to make even small adjustments. Very poor design overall.[ KARL  Nov 25, 2014 ]
Yes an android phone charges while connected to the usb. But it does not charge as quick like when you use the wall charger. I have a Samsung S4 and when I used the navigation app on my phone when connected to the usb it actually lost battery life. So it does okay if you are not using your phone while it's charging from the usb.[ JUDITH  Nov 25, 2014 ]
Yes it does.[ KEN  Nov 25, 2014 ]
I've got an iPhone, and it charges when connected to the USB. most all USB's have voltage to them so i'm sure an android would charge as well.[ GARY B  Nov 25, 2014 ]

It plays music also. I have two Excelon units , and the adjustability of the units really help my sound even with factory speakers.[ Michael  Jun 13, 2014 ]
It streams Bluetooth music from any source including the phone. Mine works great![ Ricky  Jun 12, 2014 ]
I have an iPhone 5 with about 300 songs on it, and this unit does indeed play music from my phone via the Bluetooth connection. I don't even have to take my phone out of my holster! When I get in the car, all I have to do is press one button on the unit (or the remote control) to turn the Kenwood on; within 20 seconds or so, my phone is automatically connected via Bluetooth. Included among your choices for audio input, such as Tuner or CD, is BT Audio, and if you choose that input and press the Play button, music from your phone will play through your car stereo. NOTE: It took me a week or so to discover all of the "details" needed to make that happen! First, you must pair your phone with the unit via Bluetooth so that they "know" one another. Also, the default setting for Bluetooth audio is to send the music through only the front speakers, so you must change that to send music through all speakers, assuming you have both front and rear speakers. All of the directions and information needed are in the owner's manual, so you will need to refer to those instructions. If someone calls you on your phone, the music will mute and you will hear the caller announced - pressing one button will accept the call; you will hear the phone audio through the car speakers and your voice will be picked up by the microphone (included with the Kenwood unit) that you will have mounted somewhere near your steering wheel or dash. If you wish to make a call while listening to music, you press that same button and the music mutes while the display shows "VOICE CONTROL", and you can simply say "Call John Doe on mobile" or "Call Mom at home". You MUST attach that microphone during installation and must use it in order for the caller to hear your voice! I did not realize that until after the unit was installed and had to pull it out and install the microphone afterwards - a little bit of a pain that could have been avoided by doing it with the initial installation. Good luck and enjoy![ JAMES E  Jun 12, 2014 ]
I have used the bluetooth to play music or stream music off of my phone. It also has a Pandora option, too. But I have not tried another device that has bluetooth...however, I would imagine that as long as you can connect to the radio's bluetooth (which is easy to do with my phone) you should be able to play![ KARENA  Jun 12, 2014 ]
It's not hard to do at all. Remove the trim from around the door and run your microphone behind it. Its a simple install.[ ANTONIO  May 05, 2014 ]
Yes we installed the mic to be honest it wasn't that hard but i really dont like it but as far as the question of hooking it up its fairly easy[ JOANN  May 02, 2014 ]
I mounted mine on the interior trim around the windshield. I simply ran the wire up the pillar that the windshield mounts to and ticked it under the plastic trim and under the headliner. I did not try the internal mic as I wasn't aware there was one.[ NEIL C  May 01, 2014 ]
I recently purchased and had the unit installed at a local stereo shop for 40.00. As i watched them install the external mic, it appears very easy, just remove the plastic section of the support, run the wire underneath and clip the mic to the top. The past kenwood stereo had only an integrated mic and this new one with the external mic works WAY better. I would highly recommend use the external mic[ JOHN  May 01, 2014 ]
At first, I did not install the external mic. However, when my iPhone 5 was connected via Bluetooth with the head unit and I made a phone call, the other party could not hear me. When I contacted Kenwood about that, I was informed that the external mic needed to be connected, which I did, and it has worked perfectly since then. The installation was relatively easy - pull out the head unit, run the mic cord up behind the dash into the opening, plug into the back of the unit, then hide the cord and use the adhesive pad to mount the mic. I placed the mic on the top of the steering column and it had worked fine.I was not aware that the head unit has an integrated mic? Does it? If so, it did not work very well with my initial set-up.[ JAMES E  Apr 30, 2014 ]
I installed mine right in front of my gauge cluster. It wasn't hard to install, and I don't beleive the stereo has an internal mic. I could be wrong though.[ ALAN  Apr 30, 2014 ]
I have installed two of these head units and both times I installed the mics. So I cant say if the internal mic works well. Honestly I didnt know it had an internal mic. One was instslled in an 07 kia sorento pretty easy. The other in a 02 dodge ram not easy and no good place in the pillar to install so I put it on the outside of the instrument cluster. Back in the corner so you couldnt see it. Both times I checked on line to see how the dashes came apart. Hope this helps.[ JESSE  Apr 30, 2014 ]
We installed the BT mic next to the steering wheel with little effort. We ran it straight from the head unit behind the steering cover. It works great, we just had to adjust the sensitivity down thru the head unit to alleviate some distortion.[ MICHAEL  Apr 30, 2014 ]
Matthew, it was incredibly easy and works well. I mounted it right by the rearview mirror. I looked at a YouTube video and it was no problem at all 15 minutes at most.[ THOMAS J  Apr 30, 2014 ]
