Kenwood Excelon KDC-X598 - Enjoy hands-free calling and audio streaming using the built-in Bluetooth technology
Crutchfield: Kenwood KDC-X598 display and controls demo
If you're into sound quality in your car, Kenwood Excelon receivers feature hot 4-volt preamp outputs for your amps and an impressive array of sound-sculpting tools. This Kenwood Excelon KDC-X598 CD receiver uses built-in Bluetooth® to bring hands-free calling and audio streaming to your vehicle. And Kenwood backs up this versatile receiver with a 2-year warranty.
Bluetooth gives you hands-free calling convenience, plus a wireless connection to the songs stored on your compatible music player. If you're an Android® user who's grown tired of your old radio's complicated Bluetooth pairing issues, this receiver's simple, secure pairing (SSP) technology will make your life easier. If you're an iPhone® aficionado, the KDC-X598 gives you full Siri Eyes Free control with compatible iPhones.
Once you're paired up, you can talk hands-free by simply touching the dedicated "phone" button when a call comes in. And the receiver can alert you when you receive text messages, which you can read when you're out of the car. You can install the external Bluetooth microphone in a good spot inside your vehicle for superior hands-free communication.
If you listen to Internet radio on your iPhone or Android, you can use this receiver's controls to play music from Pandora® and iHeartRadio® Internet radio. You can scroll through your stations, bookmark songs, and give a thumbs-up or thumbs-down right from the receiver's face. And speaking of radio, you can add a satellite radio tuner to this Kenwood, and get into the in-depth music and entertainment programming provided by SiriusXM.
The KDC-X598's 3-band parametric equalizer lets you adjust the centerpoint of your treble, midrange, and bass controls. You can use the low-pass frequency filter and phase control to tune the bass going to your subwoofer. You can also adjust the variable-color display so this Kenwood looks right at home in your dash, while dust covers protect the CD slot, aux input, and USB port.
The receiver's front-panel USB port allows you to access and control the music stored on your iPhone or Android phone. And the port can handle MP3, WMA, or WAV music files on a thumb drive too. Here's a nice feature from Kenwood — Drive Change allows you to connect a memory card reader or USB hub to the Kenwood's USB input and select music from up to five memory cards or USB flash drives.
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Kenwood Excelon stereo. Connect a few wires, program the adapter for your car and this Kenwood, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.
Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.
iPod/smartphone note: If you're going to use your iPod or smartphone with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for compatibility information.

Awesome quality and the Crutchfield customer service neat , they help me to pair mi iPhone 6
Well this sounds good enough, but no matter what I do it will not stay connected to bluetooth. It connects and then almost immediately I get a message that says"Connection Unsuccessful make sure that kenwood KDC-X5** is in range". I have paired this many times. I was told to reset the head unit which I did and it still does not work. Do not waste your money on a kenwood!
I have always bought Kenwood receivers and this is another great one. I was mainly looking for something that would connect and work well with my phone. This receiver has done just that. It will also allow me to expand later when I want to add a sub and maybe satellite radio. The only thing I don't like is that you have to scroll through too many sources...maybe I just haven't figured out how to turn off the options I don't use.
Pros: Great value for features
Cons: LCD screen doesn't display when cold. (Comes back as vehicle/radio warms up) Remote pointless - too small to hold and use with one hand
Awesome deck. Lots of features but not too many to confuse you. I love the low and high pass filter settings! Sound quality is twice as good now! 50x4 channel amplifier built in to the deck! For the price it's an awesome buy! To get just a 50x4 amp for the price. Don't hesitate to buy!
Pros: Settings, built in 4 channel amp, sound quality, color changing face...
Cons: Thing around the faceplate was too big and I had to change a setting to get my rear speakers to work with Bluetooth
Just an awesome product... been a Kenwood fan for years and it is hard to beat the EXCELON line!
Cons: Display is tempermental in cold weather, but still is awesome
It's about exactly what I expected. Wish the rms was a little higher.
Easy to install, Not as much bass, button too small and hard to read lables
Pros: Easy to install
Cons: not enough base, button too small and hard to read lables
I've always been a Kenwood fan. This one hasn't let me down yet. It's a good value for the price. The Blue Tooth works better than the factory Blue Tooth in our Ford Escape.
I bought this receiver to replace the factory stereo in my Ford Fusion mostly to add an amplifier without tapping into the factory wires. This is the best cd player i have ever owned. It made the factory speakers sound so much better than they did before. I had planned on replacing the speakers as well but after a little adjusting i may not need to. The best part of it is probably the Bluetooth. It has worked flawlessly. If i have one complaint it is probably the display isn't very easy to read in the daylight but it isn't as bad as i was expecting based on other reviews i read. All in all its a great cd player. I don't think i could have made a better decision purchasing it. If you're thinking about purchasing it just do it. You won't be disappointed.
Very functional and updated
Pros: Usb port and bluetooth
Cons: Small display
Whoever designed this did not have the "average" person in mind....the buttons are so tiny and jammed together that it's really hard to use, especially when driving. I have to keep the manual right next to the unit and refer to it all the time just to figure out how it works. This was obviously designed by and for the tech savvy person who loves to play with equipment. I love to play and listen to my radio - not just get frustrated by too many tiny buttons! It was also a real downer to have to purchase something else and pay for more installation to be able to use my steering wheel controls. But the sound is excellent and that kinda makes up for some the things I do not like about this stereo.
Pros: Excellent sound quality; aesthetically pleasing (except for the small size of the unit); quick installation at Crutchfield with super warranty
Cons: Buttons are tiny and jammed together; simply cannot read stereo during daylight hours unless it's cloudy and I'm not wearing sunglasses; stereo itself is so small - why not make it larger to fit where my original stereo used to be, instead of making me purchase a "filler" box to use up the rest of the space??
This stereo is a great upgrade giving Bluetooth, usb and an aux input for android, i pod/phone etc. This stereo has alot of functions if you are adding a sub and an amp. My son has the same one thus why I bought it. I am only using the stock Toyota amp and speakers for now. It sounds great. No more cassette tape adapter needed for listening to Pandora or ???
Pros: Bluetooth, USB and AUX input. Great power output.
Cons: Alot of settings that are great for someone with an aftermarket sub and amp but maybe too much for some without the need or the knowledge of such settings!
Fast delivery, great price, easy install, sounds good with stock 6 spot in 2001 Cherokee
Pros: Everything I stated, Bluetooth works nice, easy operation
Cons: None yet...
Just installed and began using it, appears structurally sound, looks cool and has good sound. Crutchfield rep helped me pick out this stereo based on my wants.
Look no further, this is a great radio. I replaced a previous replacement radio with this one and I am happy I did. The sound is clear, crisp and clean without needing a lot of boost. I believe to be an excelent unit.
Pros: It's sound. Either band or inputs sounds good.
Easy install using the Crutchfield MasterSheet and the free Dash Kit and wiring adapter, Love all the Features, sounds and looks Great. The connections were made easy with the Posi-ProductsT Car Stereo Connectors. Very satisfied with price and product
You can never go wrong with Kenwood stereos!
Pros: Cool new color displays, easy set up for Bluetooth!
Great product, it runs great and looks great. The Bluetooth functions great and I love how all the ports are covered to prevent dust from entering the radio. The tuner works great and the radio was very easy to install in my car. I'm very pleased
Pros: Audio quality Ease of use The backlight color changes over time!
I replaced my stock head unit with this Kenwood Excelon KDC-X598, What a perfect upgrade,it has really brought out the sounds.
Pros: Perfect upgrade from the original, and the Crutchfield's installation kit made me it easy to install. It was everything I needed. Now I need to up grade my speakers.
Cons: I have non at this time..
I got this system for Christmas and am enjoying it thoroughly! I have no experience in installing a radio however, the directions were fantastic as it was easy to install in no time. I am still learning the capabilities of the radio but so far I love it!
Pros: Very easy installation and great sound!
Cons: Nothing yet
Bought this on sale from Crutchfield for my son for xmas. Came with all the extra installation stuff, which is very nice. We just installed it in our 2001 GMC Yukon XL (same as Chevy Suburban) and the install went perfectly. Good instructions from Crutchfield and great phone support. However, neither Crutchfield nor Kenwood manual seemed to discuss the connection of the factory subwoofer. A call to Crutchfield cleared it up; the subwoofer gets its signals from the speaker outputs. No need to connect the subwoofer output RCA jacks on back of the Kenwood. However, we were informed that we must connect the power control output wire that signals the external subwoofer amp to turn on. Once all that done, a test turn on before final install showed that everything worked first time! We completed the install into the dash very quickly and easily and my son started to enjoy his new stereo. Huge Difference!! If you are in doubt of buying a new stereo, even a relatively inexpensive one, then don't hesitate!
Pros: Ease of installation, great Crutchfield customer service, loud sound volume, great sound quality, matches well with the Sony door speakers and subwoofer that we bought last year from Crutchfield.
Cons: Directions regarding subwoofer needs improvement.
Great sound, many features for then money, easy to install.
Pros: A lot for the money
Just installed into my 2006 Kia Sorento. Looks factory installed with the included install kit and the wiring harness matched exactly so it was a complete "plug and play"!
Pros: Great value. Kenwood is highly recommeded.
CD player quit ejecting after 1st day. ....
Bought the tunes for son to keep him hands free and got so much more. Easy to install and easy to use. Not hard for even me that is not that familiar with technology.
Pros: Great sound. Easy operation . Cool color changing display.
Cons: My son cranks it up when his mom is riding with him.
Love all kenwood products. ..they always just get better and better
Really great unit for my sons truck. Easy instal and works perfectly! Crutchfield guys that helped me on the phone were great and sent me everything I needed! Install was really a breeze!
Pros: Great looks and function
this is a great radio
I really like Kenwood products. Their products are built tough. During my 4 million miles plus of trucking, Kenwood products outlasted the other brands I have tried. I installed this unit in my wife's car and it looks and works great. The owner's manual can be a little overwhelming for some old brains like mine but I figured it out. One gripe I have is that the remote control is ridiculously small. There is no good reason to make the remote so small since it will spend its life in the car or truck. It's made for a 5-year old child's hands. This unit is still a great buy and I would buy another if I needed one.
Pros: Great Product
Cons: Remote control is too tiny.
Great stereos, and a good value
Pros: I've has Kenwood Stereos for years and they've always used the same harness plug. I've taken a fifteen year old Kenwood stereo out and plugged a brand new unit into the same harness.
Cons: Would like more explanation in the manual on what some of the features and adjustments actually do.
Maybe too many features
Pros: Looks good. Sounds great.
Cons: Too many options.
Replaced a old kenwood with this and it does not dissapoint!
Product came with other needed to install along with directions. Product came with a remote which was an unexpected bonus.
Pros: Remote came with
Cons: None noticed - brand new to product have not been able to use yet.
Looks amazing, sounds great, and for the price you CANT beat it!
Pros: Looks Price Sound quality
I bought this for the Bluetooth and XM. when I bought the deck the xm tuner was just $10 more. The sound is much better than the stock unit this replaced. The menu and setup are a bit complex but with all the features this shouldn't be a surprise. if you are concerned about the install don't be. with the wiring kit and instructions and the sales advice from Crutchfield I was able to get this deck installed in about two hours. the hardest part was running the XM antenna through my dashboard.
I'd purchased an older version of this product, and was so happy with it that when my second car needed a replacement, I purchased the newest version...love it!
Pros: Easy to use; love the blue tooth, sync, and sound.
Cons: none yet!
Nice radio. Installation was simple and setup was pretty straight forward with one caveat. The default audio setup for Bluetooth is to play only through the front speakers. It took a bit of digging to find out that you need to enable it for all speakers by going to functions -> bt mode -> bt hf/audio and change it to "all". Why it's not set to all by default defies all logic. Another small issue from the user experience standpoint is that scrolling through sources takes you from tuner -> Pandora -> iHeart radio -> BT Audio. So if you want to go from tuner to BT Audio, the "Kenwood Music Control" app will start both Pandora and iHeart radio on the phone whether you like it or not. The BT audio issue, dismal "Kenwood Music Control" app, poor Android integration and firmware updates that are impossible to find led to the three start rating. If you have an iPhone that you're hooking up via USB you can disregard this review. That works fantastically. Why manufacturers pander to a phone that has half the market share of Android is a mystery, but I digress. Kenwood are certainly not alone in doing so.
Pros: Nice radio. Installation was simple and setup were easy. Good manual
Cons: Poor support for Android. Call audio quality is mediocre.
This is one of the best head unit I ever had. I Always had been a fan with keenwood headunit recievers. I noticed it had a big change of sound coming out of my speakers so loud and clear after switched out the pioneer unit. Number one reason I brought this unit because i was looking for something with 6 pre-amp outputs that i intend to use in the future. Second reason for blutooth which connects perfect everytime I use it. The phone I have is the Galaxy s5. As soon the radio turns on will get notification on the phone asking if want to connect the blutooth. Can also hook up 2 devices and 1 audio streaming to blutooth. This unit has many different colors to change the display. Display is very clear even in the daylight time without putting brightness to its max. The pioneer unit I had before I couldn't see the display during the day and I hated that! This is a great head unit. I'm very satisfied with Crutchfield they have many choices and explains everything in detail and they have better quality units than would have got something at the big box store or the discount store. Seems like they sell outdated stuff compare what Crutchfield have in stock.
Pros: 6 pre-amps outputs(4-volts). Blutooth, colors display options. EQ-pro.
I needed a new head unit for my 3rd gen 4Runner that wouldn't cost too much. The installation was easy and the extra power makes my stock speakers sound a lot better. I don't even want to upgrade them for a while. The unit is incredibly easy to use and set up. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a single-din head unit, it's well worth the extra $20 that you would spend on most of the other ones.
Pros: Easy installation. Variable color to match your vehicle. Very stylish design. Great power output.
Cons: Haven't actually come across any yet. You really get what you pay for though.
Easy to wire up. Still haven't played with all the setting yet but so far it is great.
Pros: Easy to change settings and figure out options. Good sound quality
Cons: Remote stinks. Need to really press down buttons to get them to change channels, etc... and need to line up the remote sensor perfectly to get it to work.
Great service from Crutchfield as usual, its like they want you to come back for all your electronic needs! Kenwood stereo is exactly what I wanted and the price I liked. Performs flawless, read tons of reviews since they are very helpful. Also all the free hardware for install was spot on, looks and sounds great!
Pros: Professional looking results, great sound over stock head unit. Fast free shipping.
Cons: No cons from anything from Crutchfield ever.
This is a great unit. My husband bought it for me for our anniversary. Easy to install, nice sound, even blue tooths to me old dumb phone.
so far so good its a good unit
Easy install, looks great with colors to match my dash lights. Monster improvement over the stock Ford Mach radio system, which is the factory upgraded radio!
Pros: Bluetooth works great! Very happy with this radio.
Cons: Illumination could be a little brighter in sunlight.
Excellent value for the money. Has a great sound and features. Easy to install with the master sheet, wiring harness and trim kit provided by Crutchfield
Great service great products no brainer to order from crutchfield
Easy installation and configuration. A large retailer sells Kenwood now so that takes the coolness factor way down would have bought an alpine but 1 year warranty and couldn't adjust color
Pros: price kit was awesome
Great Stereo. This was going in a 1999 Ford Taurus, and required a minor dashboard modification, but the Scosche kit that came with the unit worked like a charm.
Pros: Good sound....Bluetooth works fine. Great sounding stereo with all the features I need.
This is a great head unit with a lot of features. I put this in an older F150 with Ford's "premium" sound system with built in amp. I had already upgraded the factory speakers to Polk DB570's. I bypassed the built in Ford amp when I installed this receiver and I am glad I did. The sound quality is awesome. It will push the speakers MUCH higher than the factory head unit and with much more clarity. This is a very modern and attractive unit as well. The bright color display looks very good at night, but as with all aftermarket units I have seen, it can be hard to see in the daytime. Bluetooth connection is relatively fast and very stable. Calls are very clear and no one I have talked to can tell I am talking to them on bluetooth. Being able to connect multiple bluetooth devices at once is one of the things I have been impressed with most. Switching between those devices to play bluetooth audio is the one area that I will take a point off though. To do this, you have to go down about 3 to 4 levels in the settings, deselect the current device, then select the desired device. You can not safely do this while driving, especially in the daytime fighting glare. With a head unit this advanced, there should be an easier way to do this.
Pros: Tons of features, very clear mic reception for bluetooth calls
Cons: Need an easier way to switch between connected bluetooth audio devices.
A ton of features packed in to an affordable unit. The only reason for dropping a star is that the CD door is flimsy (I already broke it).
Pros: Features. Price.
Cons: Delicate CD door.
The variable color display is fun at night & the unit sounds good. I'm happy with the eq but it would be nice to have a broader selection than bass, mids, & treble... The design is nice to, it looks very clean on my dash and when the led's turn red it matches my interior very nicely.
Pros: I haven't found anything i'm not happy with
After several months of "investigative research", I finally narrowed my choices down to two head units, then finally picked the Kenwood, and I'm glad I did. The installation was way too easy and the fit and finish has resulted in a flawless and seamless installation. Looks absolutely professional. No problems at all and tweeking all the settings just took a little time. No effort at all. My only issue is I always find it a little frustrating when I purchase and item, then two weeks later it goes on sale. Oh well, still got a super deck for a great price.
Pros: Easy installation, even with the Sirius Tuner and microphone. Easy to program and customize to your particular ear and desires. Looks awesome at night with the different color schemes. Remote is kinda nice, keeps you from looking down at the deck but I really won't use it a lot.
Cons: Haven't really found any yet, and probably won't. I'm super satisfied with this unit and the finished outcome.
Great value stereo. Kenwood wins again.
Replaced an x395 so easy install. Unplug old, plug in new and done. Great features and sound
Pros: Easy installation, easy to navigate
Really easy to use and even easier to install. So far I really like it and notice a huge difference in sound quality compared to the factory stereo. Can't wait till my new speakers and tweeters for my dash and roll bar get here!
Love the stereo... do have to agree with the majority of the reviews that state that the display is hard to read in direct sunlight... its darn near impossible and I have tried numerous color settings.. Bluetooth takes awhile to connect but once it does no issues staying connected, have never had a disconnection yet.. One thing I don't like and I am not sure if its the stereo or my phone that is doing it but when running Pandora all the phone displays is the Kenwood connection screen, would love to have the Pandora window open showing the artist etc.. Artist and title do show on screen.. but as already stated display is really hard to see.. Definitely recommend and would buy again..
Pros: Plenty of connections for after market amplifier, plenty of choices for music whether it be Pandora, USB or tuner.
Cons: Display hard to read in direct sunlight, bluetooth slow to connect,
Was easy to install and the install kit worked great. The sound of the X598 is one of the best at $150 price range.
Pros: Great sound easy controls
Cons: Small control knobs.
Really good sound easy to follow instructions for set up and install. Easy to use and great sound. Looks great. Would have been a 5 star but the buttons are a little small for me personally
Great Blue Tooth radio for the price; along with Easy install, sleek design, and customizable controls. It has all that is needed, and a few you might not use. Little tough to read with glare during daylight hours.
Pros: Blue tooth, Easy install, sleek design, and customizable controls
Cons: Hard to read sometimes during daytime
Great product. Love that it has phone and Bluetooth capabilities. For my car it was very easy to install. Everything works as advertised.
Bought this to replace a 4 yr old Kenwood with a bad aux. input jack. Love the Bluetooth feature, no more cables. Microphone works well for hands free calls. Wiring/installation was a breeze, plugged right into the connectors from my old unit. The sound seems cleaner/louder than the previous one as well. Very satisfied with this purchase, good job Crutchfield!
Pros: Bluetooth, Pandora/IHeartRadio compatibility, display
Cons: None so far
I just installed my deck myself, and with the install kit from Crutchfield, made it so easy. Love the deck, and loved the price. I would recommend buying this to a friend. Quality product expecially for the price.
I wanted to upgrade the radio in an older Ford Escape in order to play my iPod and I wanted Bluetooth for the phone. I didn't want to have to modify the dash or change out the factory speakers or the subwoofer and I didn't want to spend a lot because of the age of the vehicle. The Crutchfield advisor recommended this unit. It came with everything I needed to do the install (except for crimps that I added to the order). The install was fast, relatively simple, and the unit looks and sounds awesome. What an upgrade! The price was very reasonable with fast and free shipping. I'm very pleased with the stereo and the advice I got from Crutchfied.
Cons: For the price, nothing
I love all the features at this price point. The Bluetooth works great. But it does take about 30 Sec to auto connect when I turn on stereo. Wish it was faster at connecting. I love that it has plenty of EQ settings to choose from but wish they were easier to access. Sound quality seems good but I need to replace the factory speakers. Doing that next month. Looks great in my dash! Would definitely buy another Kenwood like this one!
Pros: Build Quality, display colors, great Bluetooth, 2 year warranty
Cons: Wish it had a dedicated Bluetooth button, AM reception is bad, EQ settings could be easier to access
Great radio , was suggested from the Crutchfield Team when I was researching, great support
Cons: was a little hard to wire and set up bluetooth, however support team walked me through in miniutes
Good sound good looks quality product
SUPPORT WAS GREAT,EASY INSTALL,PRICE BEST OF ALL
I was upgrading from a factory radio, and was kind of amazed how bad this was - I know Kenwood has a good reputation and this was recommended for me. The sound overall remained tinny and harsh, no matter how much I fooled with the equalizing options - and I fooled with that a lot. It was considerably worse than my factory radio, and by the way I have good speakers - I upgraded from my factory speakers a while ago. The controls were awkward to use, and the terrestrial radio tuner was just amazingly bad. The FM was just bad, with more static than my factory radio, and the AM radio literally sounded like there was no antenna attached. Even strong local stations I could just barely hear. I even took out the unit to check if my antenna cable was securely connected, and it was. I returned this an bought an Alpine for around the same price, and the Alpine is great - night and day difference.
Pros: Looks okay.
Cons: Pretty much everything else.
Lives up to its name, and is well equip for the price.. You won't be disappointed with this unit!!!!!!!
Pros: easy install, ipod interface great features
This is a great unit, its easy to install, easy to set up, and the sound quality is very good. Having three sets of preamp outs makes adding multiple amplifiers a breeze. The tools provided to tailor the sound are great as well. My iPhone paired up easily and works well with the unit as well. Get one, you won't be disappointed.
Pros: Easy to read display, great sound, easy set up
Cons: None that I know of.
This receiver exceeded my expectations. It was easy to install with Crutchfield's supplied cables and instructions and a bit of technical know-how. I installed it in a 1997 vehicle in order to get up-to-date features in the car radio and electronics, but did not obtain the optional Pandora receiver. Car radio instructions are fairly clear and controls fairly easy to operate -- but complex enough that you'll have to read the manual. I am able to play audio from a small 8 GB USB drive, which is awesome because of how many songs can fit on it. You can access folders and files fairly quickly with the controls -- so make sure to store songs in folders that represent albums or groupings that are important to you. CD player works fine. I was able to link my android pad to the unit to play music via Bluetooth. This was done easily and had great sound quality. I installed the car microphone through the dashboard, up the window column and placed it on the ceiling above the car mirror. It linked easily via Bluetooth to my iPhone and audio quality of phone calls is great for those on both sides of the conversation. The receiver includes control of microphone gain, echo, and another parameter, but the defaults seemed to work best for me. Of course, incoming calls mute and pause existing audio. The receiver automatically downloads your contact list, recent contacts, and some other information so that you can make calls directly from the receiver controls.
Pros: Many features (radio, USB music, Bluetooth music, Pandora, iHeart, CD, etc.). Looks great. Fairly easy to use, good audio quality with many equalizer adjustment options.
Cons: In some intermediate lighting conditions, I noticed the display could be harder to see, but I may not have figured it out yet. Great in the dark. Great in bright light.
Great deck for usb devices, bluetooth, even a cd player... My android phone paired with this deck by simply plugging it into the usb. Phone calls are very clear and easy to operate (answer & Hang up). Sound quality is great, couldn't ask for more in a car stereo. Purchased a second one for my girlfriends car!
Pros: user friendly
Cons: none so far
Great receiver to replace factory radio/CD in 2005 Altima. The stock speakers sound much better with the Kenwood. Bluetooth through the Android phone works great as does the ability to shuffle music from Android.
Pros: Easy install. Great sound. Much smaller footprint than stock radio.
Cons: Display hard to read in direct sunlight.
Great unit for the price. Sound is very good and versatility is great. .
Pros: Wattage is higher than most units I looked at for the same price. Good looking unit. I also likes the ability to play music from iphone and thumb drives (flash). Good value as well for the features offered.
Cons: None that I can tell at this point.
The radio sounds great and I love being able to integrate my phone for car use. Probably the one thing that I don't understand is the way the clock displays or not. When you are driving down the road I doubt that you would care what the name of the song is playing from my IPOD or what track it was. But I almost always want to know what time it is. The clock should be the primary display or at least the option to choose that. It comes with a remote hand unit which If I'm driving down the road I don't know what I would do with that. If they would have taken the money needed to develop a hand unit and fixed the clock display it would be a top rated radio. Quality is top notch no question. I don't think for the price that it's to much to pay for this but I will have to purchase an additional clock to tell time with.
Pros: Great sounding radio for the price. Easy to install, Bluetooth connected right up to my 3gs iphone
Cons: If you want to know the time don't buy this
Just received the radio and not had the chance to install it yet in my 1993 Honda Accord, but I have seen and heard it on a few vehicles. I had to upgrade my KDC X-917 due to the fact that it has USB, cell phone and Bluetooth capabilities. The sound is outstanding and the display is awesome, the connections are very simple and the mounting is perfect with all the accessories sent with the order. I hope to install it very soon so I can update the review.
Pros: Easy to install
Liked this radio so much I ended up buying 3 and now all the cars at my house have this radio. Between all the features and capabilities it has I'm more than impressed with it. Theres only one car left at my house that does't have this installed and ill be ordering it soon.
Pros: Does everything I need and then some.
Cons: Cant read my mind yet.
Over all a good product
Pros: Nice sound
Cons: Blue tooth doesn't always work
This product was very easy to install with the addition of "Metra 70-7001 Receiver Wiring Harness". Fit snugly in my car radio slot as intended and functions great. For those that don't use iHeartRadio or Pandora (like me) the sources can be disabled. I primarily got this unit for its bluetooth playback feature and hands free calling. Both work great, I can stream music to the radio via bluetooth as well as answer calls while driving without using my hands.
Pros: -easy installation -easy to use (comes with a manual in-case you're unsure about something) -nice display (variable colors or preset by user) -I'd say good sound quality but that is more determined by the speakers. Offers a nice range of audio tuning (equalizer etc...) -good array of external inputs (auxiliary and USB as well as bluetooth)
Cons: -My only gripe is the microphone isn't built into the radio unit itself. It's a long wire that connects to the back of the unit so you must run the wire somehow to the front panel (meaning the mic is behind the radio which is behind all of your car's paneling). My car happens to have plenty of holes through which the mic can be brought to the front, but I don't know about others. The microphone works so well that there really was no reason not to have it embedded in the unit itself.
Very nice radio for the price. Nice features.
Pros: Features, cost
The Kenwood Excelon KDC-X598 is exactly what I needed to update my '92 Mazda Miata. I was looking for Bluetooth connectivity with the iPhone and a CD deck/tuner. So far, this has been a great choice. It's easy to use and connects quickly via Bluetooth or USB. Like others have said, the BT does not play through the fader but USB does. Yea the buttons are small and have tine braille markers but the abundance of features really make up for it. Crutchfield's website made this purchase easy and well informed. No extra charge for installation extras and installation was fairly easy. Great store, great deal. No regrets!
Pros: Great price Lots of features Good sound
Cons: Tiny < > button markers Bluetooth doesn't play through fader
This has to be one of my favorite Stereo's I have bought in a long while. It has so many Options from CD, USB to Bluetooth, and with Pandora and I heart radio controls you will never run out of Music.
Pros: Lots of music options. Bluetooth with out have to buy an adapter. Pandora and I heart radio. lots of color to choose from to match you dash. USB for playing from a flash drive or your cell phone and it will charge it at the same time.
Cons: Display is hard to read in day light.
READ THE MANUAL. This is not an out of the box easy unit. For the money it is great though. Nice features and 4-volt out is nice.
Pros: 4-volt out 22 rms bluetooth price
Cons: not easy to use unless you read the manual
Everything about this unit is fantastic except for if you are trying to get good sound quality out of bluetooth. Its running old bluetooth technology. Version 2.1(new phones are on 4.0), Bluetooth as a software compresses your audio and cuts off the high and low end so your subwoofers and tweeters sound absolutely terrible. Ipod hook up sound is fantastic though. Makes the system sound fantastic. Just a heads up on the bluetooth
Pros: great for everything
Cons: except bluetooth
deck is great for the price features are outstanding and sound quality is great, features were exactly what I was looking for Bluetooth works great even with Samsung galaxy s5 even though kenwood said it was not compatible and rds compatible even though it is not listed in the features
Pros: easy to use features are great
Cons: haven't found one yet
Very good quality and performance. The only reason I give 4 stars is the wiring harness didn't come pre connected as I was told. So, I had to go out any but wiring cap connectors when I was told I was buying everything I needed. Product works great though.
Pros: Sound and quality
Cons: Install parts
Sounds great. Of course it's a kenwood
Pros: Sound, options, ease of use
Cons: Display. Hard to see in any ambient light.
Overall a great product and great value. I would recommend. I searched several options for hands-free phone/bluetooth stereos. This was the best value and had all the features I wanted. Rated high by users.
Pros: Easy to use, many features, compatible with Siri for voice commands. Phone quality/voice is good.
Cons: Initially was hard to pair with iPhone 4S but no problems after. Clock is small and hard to read and it does not keep the time accurately. Haven't looked into why that is yet though.Crutchfield response on 9/22/2014 We forwarded this review to our Technical Support team for follow-up. Lifetime tech support comes with every Crutchfield purchase.
Received this unit after an identical refurb unit failed. This new stereo so far is working great and sound quality is so much better than the factory unit it replaced. Still getting used to smaller buttons but not a big issue. There is a glare as mentioned in other reviews but not a big issue since I do not spend a great deal of time fiddling with it when driving .Bluetooth setup is quick and so far no connection issues. control over Pandora service is a nice feature as is the hands free phone feature. Nice that Crutchfield includes everything needed for a neat and easy install.
Pros: Price, Bluetooth connections, sound quality
Cons: slight glare making unit hard to read in some lighting conditions
Excellent product for the price.
Pros: Bluetooth connection is great when I forget my USB cord.
Cons: Speaker to answer calls through radio worked first couple times but I can't get it to work now. Can answer call but caller can't hear me.
Kenwoods Excelon line is really some of the best head units I've used. Very simple, clean, yet very flexible on tuning options if you know what you're doing.
Pros: Easy to use. Not too flashy. Simple to install. Sounds great. A lot of options to tune sound. High Kenwood quality. Great price.
this is a sweet radio id recommend clicking the purchase button right now if i were you!
Pleasantly surprised, the unit has more features than expected. After installing I had both my work and person phone in the truck and both sync up with the head unit. So I called the wife and she said the sound quality was great, another bonus. I really like the features and quality.
Pros: Hidden features
Cons: Nothing on the head unit, wiring harness adapter was missing a critical step, after a little time I got it figured out.
The stero was so easy to install with the instructions. It only took me an hour from start to finish. I'll definitely recommend this product and company to people.
Great value. I was surprised at just how much this unit does in terms of configuration and sound settings. Bluetooth handsfree phone feature works great.
This Kenwood deck has great connectivity for Bluetooth, activities within seconds of powering up. The Pro EQ function allows for great shaping to fit the acoustic space of your car and allows you to shape the Q factor and set the center frequency to fine tune your system. Great deck for the price.
Pros: Pro EQ function
Wish I could make my bass come on when in bt mode!
Pros: Does everything
Cons: Bt mode kinda quirky
The stereo is sharp looking while not too flashing to get it stolen. I purchased it because it is very affordable and has Bluetooth for music and phone - hands free use. Siri does all the leg work, ha!
Pros: I like the auto changing of the lights. Easy installation. Good setup. Inexpensive.
Cons: It is annoying waiting between sources, such moving through Pandora, Bluetooth, Auxiliary, etc. There needs to be an easy skip button between those sources. May be I am not reading all the directions thoroughly.
I have always been a Kenwood fan and I wasn't disappointed again. Installation and programming was fairly easy and the power output was strong enough to give great sound from aftermarket speakers. The only problem that I have is an occasional disconnection of the Bluetooth, but that could be a problem with my phone. Thumbs up Kenwood.
Great service from Crutchfield, easy instructions and the radio was pretty easy to set up. Great sound and features for the money. This has all the things I was looking for in a compact head unit.
Pros: Price, build quality, features, sound and power.
Cons: Very difficult to read the front of the unit on a sunny day. Way to much glare.
I don't know what I like better...all of the absolutely awesome bluetooth options or all the fantastic variable display colors. it sounds great and it was very easy to install. The hands free options totally changed the way I talk and drive with my android phone. the price was very economical and the customer service support was top notch.
Pros: the aesthetics and thousands of color choices and variable display are amazing! the Bluetooth functions are flawless
Cons: none at this time
An amazing value for an outstanding product, especially when sold and backed by Crutchfield. Helpful advisers guided me through a couple of tricky steps during installation. Biggest drawback is the "glare factor" of the display whenever there is bright ambient light, and the somewhat byzantine file organization of the USB input.
Pros: Super sound, reasonable radio receiver
Cons: Display very difficult to read except under the lowest of ambient light conditions. Navigating the USB files (built w/ Kenwood Music Editor Lite) awkward and non-intuitive. Buttons small.
This honestly is one of the best head units I have ever purchased for my own use in terms of sound quality and options list so far. I have always used Alpine and Clarion in the past and they served me well, especially the Clarion as it lasted practically an eternity; if this Kenwood Excelon unit lasts half as long I will be superbly pleased. The sound from this thing once you get it dialed in with their "Pro EQ" is astonishingly clear and precise. If you don't know how to utilize and set a parametric eq, just download a quality RTA app and do a little bit of research and your ears will thank you. Truly impressed. This unit has to have one of the better DACs I have heard from the major brands. Starting from a flat eq it needs very little tweaking to get natural sound. Your other equipment and interior environments play a role as well obviously but this gives a great starting point. The BT audio and call functions work very well and once you have your phone(s)/device(s) paired it reconnects automatically each time you get in the car. No fuss. Call clarity is excellent on both ends. While on a call you can adjust mic gain, echo cancellation, and noise reduction to fine tune. People on the other end have no idea I'm in the car. Pandora and iPod control spot on as well. The overall controls are very easy to learn and use. The variable color display helps match the interior lighting almost perfectly with one caveat, it's hard to see in bright daylight. Love this unit.
Pros: Sound reproduction. Parametric EQ and other audio controls. Call quality. Pandora control. Variable lighting. 6 @ 4V pre-outs. I honestly like it so much we're probably ordering another one for our Mercedes C240 as well.
Cons: Display rather difficult to see in bright daylight. FM reception (but I don't really listen to the radio anyway). Wish the EQ settings could be persistent throughout all the different input options, it's a real pain to dial it in 4 or 5 times over.
The first one stopped working after 2 weeks ,I called Crutchfield and they sent out a replacement asap. The second one died in less than a week, talked to Crutchfield again and I opted to upgrade to an Alpine stereo and have not had any problems with the Alpine. I had never had a kenwood stereo but thought they were a good stereo, I would never buy one again
Pros: Easy to use
Cons: don't last poor quality
This kenwood model looks and sounds awesome
Great product and price !!!
I read a ton of reviews on this site and other sites before buying this unit. It was replacing the factory installed unit in my BMW 3 series wagon which died after 12 years. I was excited to be able to finally have hands free calling, a USB port to charge my iPhone, song tracks on my display, etc. I was surpassed how small the unit is vs. the BMW factory unit. The buttons are tiny and really close together, and I'm a woman. I would imagine this would be an even bigger problem for men. As many reviewers mentioned, the display is hard to read in the sunlight. I need to play with the dimmer some more, but some colors are just about unreadable (e.g. red). I haven't had it long enough to review the sound quality, but I'm definitely disappointed with the design.
Pros: Kenwood brand name. Decent sound quality. Lots of programmable options. USB port on front. Supports Pandora. Easily pairs with iPhone Seems as if it's pretty easy to program and set up
Cons: Station buttons are too close together. Display setting are really hard to read in the sun. Finish is kind of gangster.
Great stereo! Excellent sound! Many options for music, including Bluetooth, USB and it is Sirius compatible! Very pleased with my choice!!
Decent radio except the bluetooth option which is the main reason for purchasing the radio. Keeps dropping the connection to the android phone it is paired with. Requires a manual connection each time. Not safer than talkingon a phone while holding it to your head:(
Overall a good unit. Lots of bells & whistles. would buy again
Pros: Hands free works well. USB is great. Sound quality is excellent
Cons: Display is too dim to see well in daylight. Pain in the butt to have to scroll through all of the functions to go to standby. Kenwood's music system for the USB is not very flexible and is hard to set up playlists.
This radio only plays Bluetooth out of the front speakers for some reason while every other setting does all speakers, the brightness of the screen isn't good at all even with the settings put all the way up, if the suns shinning good luck reading your deck. The appearance looks nice though.... Volume at the highest (35) is horrible... I bought 4 3ways to go along with it and they sound distorted when I turn the volume up when the Crutchfield rep told me they would slam, very disappointed !!! More than likely I will go to my local audio store from now on
Pros: Looks cool Easy install
Cons: Sound is distorted Bluetooth only works on front speakers while other sources play all 4. Screen brightness is horrible.. Hope you only use at night.Crutchfield response on 8/19/2014 The problem with Bluetooth audio only playing up front can be fixed by changing a setting in the setup menu. Check your owner's manual for instructions, or contact our Tech Support team. They can also give you some insight on adjusting the sound settings to make the speakers sound better. That Kenwood has a great set of tools for tuning the sound.
2 major issues: the display isn't very bright (even with the "dimmer" off and brightness turned all the way up) and thus is very hard to read during the day (at night it's fine), and I've also experienced significant Bluetooth issues (randomly disconnecting, not remembering or auto-connecting previously connected devices, etc). Other than that, this unit functions well.
Pros: Good value, sound quality, etc
Cons: Display brightness, Bluetooth issues/problems
All around easy to use great deck
Pros: Sound quality is amazing
Cons: None found yet
I've installed and setup other brands, but Kenwood is my go- to brand for my own rigs because of their quality and value. You simply won't find another player at this price point with this many solid features. My only serious complaint about this model is it's display visibility. If you set the color and brightness just right you -can- read it, but I've found that the real problem is glare - the face is curved, and so shiny it reflects like a funhouse mirror. I've thought about getting an anti-glare smartphone protector to trim and cover the screen to see if that helps. The sound output of this thing is great; better even than other excelon players I've seen. Unless you upgrade to something with a 5 or 7 band eq, you're not going to get more customization than this, and the internal amp performs way above its pay grade. I bought two of these, one for my car and for my wife's. We both primarily use the BT audio. They connect up and play wonderfully with her iPhone and my HTC One. It also works with my wife's no-name android tablet. In my car I'm using Excelon 6x9/6.75's and its pure bliss, and even the oem speakers in my wife's caravan sound decent with this player. This player is firmware upgradable, ours both shipped with the most recent version, (June 2014) It's worth considering this when reading reviews about compatibility issues. Crutchfield's research tab has good, detailed info about how this will work for you.
Pros: High quality sound. Excelon features give lots of control over sound. Compatible with all my devices. Menus are easy to learn/use. Nice remote control.
Cons: Display nearly impossible to read in full sunlight. (I Gave it a lower usability score because of this.) Lots of sound customization options means long setup time.
Very nice unit. It has a lot of features and sounds great. I find the buttons are a bit small though and the display is practically useless during the day. It installed fairly easily in my honda fit but it is sitting back a little and makes the buttons a bit more difficult to access. Very intuitive, for the most part, function use.
Pros: Sounds great. USB works good. Bluetooth music and phone is excellent. Microphone picks up good sound for phone use. Looks great at night!
Cons: Display is useless during the day. Buttons are a little hard to access. Install is ok...radio sits back a quarter or 1/3 of an inch (i.e. not flush with the faceplate).
Sounds great, and has more capabilities (sound/amp management) than I'll ever need. Only complaint is the lighting is too dim. The dash angle of the CRV makes face plate tilt slightly up toward the driver. Because of the gloss finish of the face plate, it catches and reflects the glare of day light. The lighting is not bright enough to over come this and is nearly impossible to see with polarized sunglasses on. Tinted windows would eliminate the glare. This head unit would not visible at all in a convertible.
Background: Audio Enthusiast; Long time Kenwood User; Electrician Been using Kenwood Head Units all my life and still have to say that they are the best around when you take into consideration the features + sound quality + sound tweakability. I bought this head unit in order to dive into the new world of bluetooth car audio (which is great btw - no more wires or cds or usb drives + infinite music with pandora). I have a Droid 4 with an Auto Bluetooth Connection app to force the bluetooth connection to this head unit everytime I get in the car. I also have the Smart Actions set to only turn the bluetooth on during the times of day I am in the car. In my opinion this headunit is a huge step down from their previous products. You'd think time would make products get better not worse. For this price I would expect more from Kenwood.
Pros: - Bluetooth from the BT Mode works well and quickly. - The audio tweaking capabilities are still up to the Kenwood par which is what Kenwood Fans love.
Cons: - Bluetooth connectivity with Pandora is horribly slow as well as iHeartRadio. Most of the time I have to manually unlock my phone and turn Pandora on. - The remote which comes with all Kenwood headunits (which has made Kenwood so great) is extremely slow and sometimes is not even detected. Idk what Kenwood changed between this version remote and the last but the response time has gone downhill quite a bit. - The screen at full brightness (full white) is extremely dim (only visible at night
Nice head unit for the money. Be nice if the clock was bigger on the display
Pros: Custom sound tunes Good sound Easy to install
Cons: Clock is too small Can't see screen well during the day
very good stereo system works great and using the bluetooth is awesome.
Pros: Bluetooth and USB port, also has cool customization options.
Solid unit. EASY to setup bluetooth. Controls take a little while to learn. Display is bright enough for me during the day.
Pros: Bluetooth setup Built in Pandora and iHeart radio Daytime display brightness Detachable faceplate Crutchfield was there to help!
Cons: Sound quality is actually a bit worse than the stock stereo! Very surprised and disappointed with this. Volume dial doesn't protrude far out enough.
Easy install. Bluetooth is great. Love it.
Pros: Options, easy to use.
Good sound, hands free easy to set up,
Pros: Hands free, 3 outputs, it's great
Cons: The distplay looks a lot bigger on the pictures,
Sounds great in my 2008 Jeep Liberty. I was also going to replace the speakers but will wait. The radio makes the stock speakers sound great.
Pros: Has everything I need. Easy to install. Sounds great.
Cons: Hard to see screen during the day. To much glare on the screen. At night looks cool.
My favorite part is the level of control I know have over my sound. The customizable EQ settings are amazing!!!
Have had this in my truck for about a month now. Sound is great when EQ adjusted properly. Had some flaky button issues with unit not wanting to skip to next song or change station but called Devin at tech support yesterday and he walked me through resetting the unit and button issues seem to have cleared up for now. Display can be difficult to see set on any of the many colors or brightness settings during daylight hours. Overall, good value and great replacement for stock unit in my truck!
Pros: Good value and great replacement for stock unit in my truck!
Cons: Display can be difficult to see set on any of the many colors or brightness settings during daylight hours.
This is my first Kenwood deck, it replaced an aging Pioneer deck. I sought direct USB connectivity for thumb drives and Bluetooth hands-free abilities, but the 4V outputs and other bonus features definitely peaked my interest. Overall, the deck was a good choice. Immediately, I could tell a major (and I mean significant!) improvement in the sonic quality over my older aftermarket deck that I probably paid twice as much for 10 years ago. After a bit of tuning, that disparity became even wider. Installation was pretty easy, the documentation relatively clear and navigation mostly intuitive. Bluetooth works great, audio quality is satisfactory both ways and my overall impression was money well spent. The display is not as bad as I thought it would be, but in direct sunlight, it's nearly impossible to read. The variable color is cool, but many are even less visible. I originally had concerns about navigating large numbers of folders on a USB stick, but it's not too bad..but it is a bit cumbersome to find one album amongst hundreds of folders on a large USB stick. (Cellular remote integration would be nice!) I also wish there were more display choices...the 1.5 lines is more like 1.25 lines, more scrolling and display outputs would be welcome. My biggest gripe, though, is that you can't do a 80Hz LPF for a sub with an equivalent HPF on the four speaker outputs, you're limited to 85/120 or 120/120...so you either send higher Hz to the subs, or you lose around 35Hz.
Pros: Superb sonic quality 4V Outputs USB thumb drive compatibility Decent documentation Bluetooth handsfree / impressive integration Bluetooth radio integration Looks sharp Easily tuned Good price for features ratio Lots of options to play with
Cons: Display hard to read in sunlight 1.5 display lines is somewhat limiting I expected a better display for a mid-range deck "Auto" text scroll option delays scrolling frequently Drive EQ is hard to figure out HPF/LPF aren't set where I'd like (80/80 or 85/85)
I bought this as part of a larger upgrade for a 2002 Nissan Frontier, to replace the standard am/fm/cd player. I have used Kenwood decks in the past, and this one fit the requirements - CD player, am/fm, Pandora compatible, USB port and bluetooth hands free. Installation was easy with the supplied dash kit and wire harness. I took extra time to solder and heat-shrink connections. The hardest part was installing the bluetooth microphone in an unobtrusive spot. In the end, I took the a-pillar trim off and threaded it up to the top-left of the windshield. Initial EQ and display settings left something to be desired, but once I'd set the display to one color and flattened the EQ on all bands (it came set to +6dB on bass, mid and treble) it sounded pretty good through Polk door speakers and factory a-pillar tweeters. Paired with the truck owners Android phone over bluetooth first time, and the phone auto-connects when the vehicle is started. Call quality is good for both the caller and the driver. Pandora and bluetooth audio works well, and it will also playback Audible audiobooks from the app on the phone using the BT Audio input. I loaded a 32GB USB micro thumbdrive with 320kbps MP3 files. Searching and selecting is easy, but it's easy to get ahead of the deck when scrolling through a long list and it can take a few seconds to catch up and show names instead of numbers.
Pros: Good sound though all sources. Display is informative. Was able to set white illumination to match the truck. Bluetooth call quality is very good, as is bluetooth audio streaming. Plain looks are a bonus - no chrome or other bling to call attention to itself.
Cons: No illumination dimmer, and display could be brighter at times. Main control knob is slick, and can be difficult for someone with long nails to use. Out of the box EQ settings are a mess; need to set everything back to 0dB gain before listening, and do that on all sources. Need to use Kenwood Music Editor software to prepare a thumbdrive to allow searching.
EVERYONE WORKED GREAT FIRST TIME,ONLY TROUBLE WAS TRYING TO SYN MORE THAN 1 PHONE.GREAT COLOR AND DISPLAYS
Pros: EASY INSTALL
This unit is in my MS3 and it bumps on the right settings. The bluetooth is quality and does everything it's suppose to. The unit is solid . My only downfall is the way it looks is. Kind of plain in my opinion. All in all it's a good unit especially for the money
Pros: Sound quality Sound quality Sound quality and Ease of installation
Cons: CD flip cover it would be better without it
This unit has it all. I can play my music in a variety of ways as well as enjoy the hands free phone feature which sounds perfect.
Pros: Versatility, price, sound and looks
Cons: Clock feature a bit small. A little complicated but taking the time to learn all the features is definitely worth while.
The KDC X598 has all the right functions and then some I have been impressed with all its capabilities!
Pros: Great sound ease of use and all around fun deck for the price
Cons: Voice recognition needs some work....
I have been playing with car audio for a little over 15 years now and I must say that this unit is a pretty good bang for the buck. 4v preamp outputs are a must for a 4ch amp. Plus, I personally like a separate sub preamp output and the fact that this unit allows me to set a lowpass xover that I can adjust from my driver's seat( and not having to contort myself to reach and adjust the amp under the seat). There is also an adjustable highpass xover that is pretty handy because nobody want low freqs to muddy their midrange. Setting this thing up wasn't too difficult, however, I have been doing this stuff for a while and I am very familiar with Kenwood heads and amps(don't buy their speakers, go with focal and you won't be let down!). I must add that this is the cheapest head that I have ever purchased and the only reason I did, was because it was purchased for my father's budget limited beach buggy chevy tahoe. All in all, this is a good clean signal producing head with just enough features to make a ride sound decent.
Pros: good and cheap or maybe cheap but really good
Cons: not any for this price point
Excellent sound quality and ease of use. Just pull your iPhone 5 into it and it pairs it up automatically. Fits great in Honda S2000, under the radio cover.
Pros: Excellent Sound Quality Multiple Bluetooth functionality Good value
Cons: Would like to have paper white display color only, not have to select a color or varying colors
Very great sterio with awesome sound, considering I'm still using my factory speakers. Looks great in the dash and the blue tooth function works great.
Pros: Blue tooth, SIRIUS XM functions. Looks,
Cons: Settings can get a little tricky, and when you have more than one blue tooth device in the vehicle, it will sometimes "kick off" the device you want to use.
Love the stereo. Wasn't sure about an after market but it actually sounds better and my brother did the install. Paul at Crutchfield rocked too!
Pros: Every feature works like a charm.
Cons: Haven't found any.
This is an amazing unit. I purchased a refurb and can not tell it wasn't brand new, I have used Clarion, JVC, DUAL and several other units, but this is the best ever.
Pros: Looks, Bluetooth, sound, quality, ease of installation
Cons: sep interface controls for sound (bass and treb) would be great
I've been a fan of Kenwood a long time. I've never had any of home receivers and car receivers fail. So I figure keep with what's working. This unit was easy to install, east to initially set up, and the pairing the Bluetooth was a breeze. For $150, you get a lot of bang for your buck.
Pros: Great value, easy to install, great quality, etc.
Very happy with this unit, coming from an Alpine head previously. I wanted something that had an intuitive user interface for my iPod as I drive in some fun traffic here in the DC metro area and was tired of changing CD as my mood changed behind the wheel. My only complaints are minor, but the same as most of the others that I've read, the screen is very difficult to read if the sun is out. I'm not sure how hard this is for the folks at Kenwood to fix, but while they are at it a knurled volume knob would be nice too.
Pros: Great sound, Intuitive user interface, lots of options
Cons: Panel difficult to read in sunlight.
This made the 14 year old speakers in my parents' Durango sound like they were top of the line speakers (I compared before and after). All of the countless features work flawlessly, and it is very easy to use once you understand how the menu system works. Even my 50+ father quickly learned how to navigate menus, change settings to his preferences, and use each input. Each input reconnects automatically when starting the car back up (even bluetooth - give it a minute to re-establish the connection!), remembering right where you were on a song and everything. Hands-Free calling (and voice commands with Siri) work like a charm! Hands down the best stereo I've used. As many others noted, it is difficult to see the display in the daytime, especially if it's tilted upwards toward the sunlight like it is in the Durango. To counteract this, ensure that you have your display brightness all the way up (to 31) and change the color to "User" and customize the color to be bright white (R-9, B-9, G-9). This helped a lot! It can quickly be changed back to your favorite color at night with just a few clicks. If you're looking for a quick and easy replacement that will play audio from any source you'd want (Bluetooth, CD, Radio, Aux, USB, iHeartRadio, Pandora, Sirius XM, etc) then this is the stereo for you! I'd also recommend giving your current speakers a chance with this radio before replacing them - like mine, this stereo may give your stock speakers a fresh breath of life!
Pros: Sound Quality, Ease of Use, Features, Compatibility, Numerous Preset EQs, Hands-Free capability, 1.5 line display
Cons: Slightly hard to see display during the day
Reviewed a lot of stereo head units before deciding on this unit. It simply had all the features I needed at a price that was very reasonable. I installed this head on my sailboat and had some install questions that were fully answered by the techs at Crutchfield. The install went smoothly, the sound is crisp and clear, it's not difficult to operate. What more could you ask for.
Pros: Great customer and tech support. Easy install. Excellent sound for the price.
Cons: Haven't found any.
This is a great system, with very good sound. I had it installed by Dashboard Audio, whom did excellent work.
Pros: Didn't know it came with Blue Tooth, which works great. It arrived in just a couple of day(5 day before expected). Even though it came with wrong connections, I would buy this set again.(Last radio I got from Cruchfield was for my 1987 Escort & cost $500 in 1988 , it worked for 15 years). I expect this one to last as long.
Cons: Can't see display in day light. Came with wrong mounting ass. (my was single connector & they sent a double connector.
I shopped local custom audio shops and decided on this particular Kenwood KDC-X598 Stereo. Just for kicks I went online to see what it cost there. Crutchfield was almost $100 less for the exact same model. Then I got worried that maybe I couldn't install it on my own. The online installation videos and tech support convinced me otherwise. I actually called Crutchfield three times during the installation just to confirm I was doing it right. The tech guys were great and walked me through it giving me the confidence I needed. Installation in my suburban took about an hour start to finish and my wife and kids were very impressed. So was I. Thanks, Crutchfield. You've got a life-long customer now.
Pros: Easy installation, quick delivery, excellent customer and tech support!
Cons: None--really. This was as good an online experience as I've ever had.
For the price of this unit you get so much features.
Pros: Easy set up clean sound. For the type of unit the features are great
Cons: You have to download a 3rd party iheart radio app in order for the the radio to connect to your iheart account.....However you can source to the the bluetooth aux and control everything.
Great head unit, I chose this over all the other sub $150 units after much research. Very easy install. The basic functions are quite intuitive, and there are a bevy of advanced options if you are inclined to adjust them. I still can't believe the horrible state of displays in single DIN head units in the year 2014, they've barely progressed in 20 years. But that's all the big names, not just Kenwood. I actually find myself using the bluetooth call feature, people say it sounds fine. There were some minor issues with DIN adapter fitment. The mounting sleeve is made of horribly cheap potmetal and they expect the standard bending tabs to hold it solid - I see this probably needing to be addressed in the future (it will definitely rattle loose). And the Metra DIN adapter they send is flimsy - significant flex using the source/power button. Still, overall this is a great unit for the money. "It just works."
Pros: Sound quality, ease if install, build quality of the actual unit seems solid, easily customized to your own preferences, plays nicely with Android, looks pretty sharp with plenty of backlight color options. It's mostly good stuff.
Cons: The mounting sleeve is flimsy and doesn't line up with a single DIN adapter in a way that allows the finish bezel to fully seat.
This radio seems nice. It is definitely an improvement over the old factory radio I had in my 2006 Honda Ridgeline rt. I like the extra adjustments to bass and treble and the bass boost and loudness made my factory speakers come to life.and the FM tuner is a ton better than my old stock unit. I will say however that it is hard to see in the daylight at all. Any color. Out of 24 colors I have to have one color at full brightness to be able to see what the screen is projecting. Also if my hand bumps the unit at all it makes screen go away And come back right after. And as stated the clock is useless due to being as tall as a dime literally.
Pros: Sound is great, color options, bass boost and loudness. Also love the CD and USB and aux dust covers built in. FM tuner and awesome Bluetooth connectivity with droid maxx.
Cons: The screen has to be on one of 24 colors at full brightness to see at all hardly in daylight, seems to fade out and back in quickly if bumped. I guess I just felt like this radio would be a little better for the money spent on the unit.
Great unit. Great price. Super easy to use. Plenty o features and nice sound quality.
Cons: Nothing so far.
First, I love the semi-parametric EQ this thing comes with. It has a 3 band Low/Mid/High EQ and the option to control the target frequency for each band. Second, I love the Pandora integration with my HTC One M8. I can Thumbs Up/Down and change stations from the receiver. It also launches Pandora automatically when I start my 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Third, I love the hands free blue tooth integration. Mine is set to auto-answer a call after 3 rings . I can also push and hold the phone button for voice activated dialing. This thing was easy to install. The hardest part about installation was figuring out where I wanted to place the mic and then routing the cable. I ended up cleaning the steering column and using the adhesive the mic came with to stick it behind the wheel. Hasn't fallen off yet. I had a few complaints about the call quality at first but boosting the gain on the mic and boosting a little noise reduction (both controlled from the receiver) improved the clarity. I have two complaints. 1: The display is absolutely worthless in any kind of daylight. You're gonna have to memorize what the buttons do. 2: I think my unit is slightly defective. After a while the display will blink when u touch it, like a loose wire or connection somewhere. Nothing happens to the sound though. It's minor enough to not be worth the hassle to RMA. I still gave it 4 stars because the thing does what it's supposed to do and does it well.
Pros: Easy to install. Great EQ options. Blue Tooth. Pandora control from the receiver.
Cons: Buggy interface. Worthless Display
Great radio. Easy to use. A lot better sound than factory
Its a pretty nice stereo with allot of options. We really like the hands free calling via. blue tooth
Pros: The color changes of the display is pretty nice.
Cons: don't really have any.
This radio can not be beat for the price. The sound is incredible and the features are many. I have this hooked up to factory speakers and this radio still sounds great. Install was a breeze.
Pros: Tremendous sound for a great price.
First purchase of Kenwood product. Installed easily. Sounds crisp. Pandora controls via Bluetooth work great. Paired easily with my razor max android phone
Pros: Ease of install and fitment. Clear instructions.
Cons: Use of Pandora through Bluetooth doesn't turn on amplifier. Display sometimes hard to read in near direct sunlight
I'm loving it! Easy to install. Easy to use. Sounds great!
The stereo is awesome. The kit that it came with made it so simple and easy install. And when I say easy to install I mean that a person who has no experience with stereos is able to install it utilizing the amazing customer service of Crutchfield.
Pros: Sound quality. Kit and harness.
Cons: The display as said by others is very hard to read during the sunny days. Also the Bluetooth only plays from the front speakers/ the iPod connector doesn't work with the microphone.
Very nice radio.
Pros: So far, it seems to be a very well built piece. Has a LOT of adjustments, which I like. Would recommend this unit to others.
Cons: Would be nice if you could make the clock a little larger and easier to see. Faceplate case would be a nice addition.
Stereo is an excellent upgrade from regular tape deck for sure, into the age of Bluetooth
Pros: Easy to configure Many options to choose from Clarity Usb, auxiliary, and CD input
Cons: Display is not easy to see during the day
The Kenwood Excelon KDC-X598 is the best BANG for your BUCK . I do installs and this is the #1 stereo I recommend with great sound quality It's loaded with a ton of features USB input 1/8 stereo input ,Bluetooth audio streaming ,remote control, 3 ( 4 VOLT ) RCA out, high pass and low pass control and so so much more .It also looks clean and stylish .Best of all the PRICE for your money you can't get more
Pros: lots of features ,great sound quality 3 (4 VOLT ) RCA outputs Bluetooth
Cons: it can do so much you will have to play with it to see it all
For the money this was a great receiver, sounded great, easy to install. The adapter kit sent with the receiver made installation a snap. Unfortunately my 2005 Nissan Frontier came from the factory with a double din receiver and I just didn't like the look of the single din. I sent it back to Crutchfield for a exchange with no problem. The Crutchfield staff was very helpful.
Pros: Great receiver for the money. Sounded great. Easy install, Colors matched the factory. Great detailed owners manual.
Cons: None other than I didn't like the look of a single din receiver.
Very easy to install, fit right in with included hardware. Wire harness plugged right in. Instructions from Crutchfield were very helpful and clear. Sounds much better than factory Blaupunkt Business CD unit.
Pros: Lots of features, Blue tooth hooked to I Phone 4 no issues, Good sound, breeze to install.
Cons: Audio controls could be better as stated in other comments.
Great after market upgrade for my 03 dakota, wanted the cd, and blutooth feature for my phone this was the main consideration; everything else, variable color, usb, etc was a bonus. Crutchfield made the installation great, provided all the needed tech and accessories.
Pros: Fitment, sound quality, looks, and price point
Cons: Sound quality for the blutooth mic is gravelly
Quality head unit with built-in Bluetooth. Only down fall like others have mentioned is the display panel reflects light so display is unreadable. Installed on a Motorcycle
Cons: Display unreadable during daylight hours on Motorcycle
everything fit perfect
Awesome unit, sounds great, adequate features
Pros: All the normal ones
Cons: Display brightness is really REALLY weak. I have a Tacoma, which has glare issues to start with but this unit has the wimpiest brightness I have ever seen. Looks awesome at night though. If you have glare issues in your vehicle, you may not be happy with this unit. If you don't, its a winner hands down.
Replaced the stock radio in my 2010 Jeep Wrangler. I had already replaced the speakers and needed more. This is an amazing stereo and Joe from Tech Support was extremely helpful as well as patient with my questions making it an easy installation.
Pros: I was tired of being wired to my phone, needed a Bluetooth connection and I got that plus so much more. Also, with having a jeep, I needed a detachable faceplate to deter theft.
Cons: Would be helpful if Kenwood supplied or offered a case for the faceplate.
Wonderful product. Bluetooth is why I bought it but realized how much better it sounds than the stock unit. Took a bit to set it up but once it was set up, I love it
Replaced the stock cd player in my 2002 Lariat. The truck has a 6 inch bazooka in the back which helped a bunch. I was suprised by the increase in sound quality. I've only had the truck 3 months and was going to replace the speakers in the doors but I don't think they are factory. I will check first. Installation took about a hour and most of that was soldering the wires. I haven't had time to try everthing because I only drive the truck on weekends. I will be ordering another for my daughters jeep Liberty.
Pros: Cool Factor
I mainly needed a new stereo for my 2012 Civic because I needed a hands-free option when talking. Bluetooth quality is amazing. The stereo made my factory speakers sound much better, though the bass settings tend to struggle a little. Easy installation.
Exactly what I was lookign for, easy to install. Plenty of features and was a good replacement for the radio I had.
Pros: THe coloring changing is pretty neat and the front USB connection is helpful.
Cons: When adjusting the bass, mids and highs you can not adjust the volume at the same time.
I purchased this kenwood for my 2005 Harley Davidson. This deck was recommended by a local stereo shop. Not only did I find it for half the cost on Crutchfield. Tech support was very helpful and making sure that it would fit my needs. I give this stereo 5 out of 5 stars and would recommend it anybody I spoke with. This Kenwood has amazing clarity and loudness. Very pleased to say the least.
Pros: Loudness, clarity and sleek design
Cons: Haven found a flaw!!!
Pros: Super easy to install, all wiring hooked up exactly right, totally impressed with Crutchfield
Cons: Sorry. Can come up with anything that isn't great
Volume knob on factory radio quit working. Decided to go with this kenwood. Great product for the price. Bluetooth works great. Had some trouble with other aftermarket radios with Bluetooth but no issues with this one. Crutchfield really makes it easy to get the right stuff for the installation of any of their products.
Good deal for the price, Bluetooth works great sound is good. Like the different colors in display
Pros: Great sound and features, works good with I phone 5
Cons: You have to change Bluetooth to all speakers to listen to music, bug it is easily changed in menu
Recieved a faulty unit. but an overall ok head unit.
Pros: lots of settings to tune the sound just right
Cons: features i just didnt need: iheart radio, pandora the faceplate has a lot of colors but the actual display is not bright enough and gets blurred out by sunlight too easily. and bluetooth is good, but it is way too slow to connect.
Very easy to install, the supplied wiring harness made the matching colors of each simple and easy to follow. Even for a old guy with bad eye sight. This id the 2nd kenwood i've bought from Crutchfield within the past year.
Pros: Easy to use was easy to sync up to my iphone.
Cons: Only con is the digital clock is a little small.
I bought this for my wife's car, she couldn't be happier, it sounds fantastic and has all the features we were looking for, easy to install and easy to figure out the operation, would certainly buy this unit again and certainly would buy from Crutchfield due to getting installation kit free and all inclusive installation instructions.
Pros: 2 yr warranty 4v preamp outputs Easy to install Easy to operate Remote control
Cons: None so far
Pros: Easy to Install and operate. Bluetooth is very clear.
BEST STEREO I HAVE EVER OWNED
Very happy with this. Excellent sound. Very easy to use. Great technology.
I love it so far, but my rear speakers don't work when pandora is playing. I'm not sure if that is an issue with the unit or installation. My biggest complaint is the tiny clock display.
Good stereo i really like it alot it sounds way better than my old stock one
I put this new head unit in my C5 Vette to replace an older Kenwood that didn't have bluetooth capability. The difference in the shape of the lens over the display makes it nearly impossible to see the display in any light. I'm not happy at all about that. The fact that I can only set the clock to display as a tiny little 4 digits at the bottom of the display sorta stinks too. Basically, regardless of the lighting, if it's daylight, I have to hold my hands over the display to see anything. I also think the text on buttons is far too small, it takes too much time to look and see what you're pressing, there's room for larger text. Do they not realize that these things are used by people while driving a car??? And, before someone thinks I'm old and senile, the 3 year old Kenwood Excelon I replace with this had a very easy to read display and controls that I could see what they said on them. The lack of contrast of the display, and the lack of contrast of the lettering on the display make this thing basically useless from the front panel. It's a good thing I'm used to Kenwood layouts or I'd never control this thing. And worst of all, if you enter the menu it uses a nice white lettering on the multi-color display. Unfortunately, that color is NOT available to be chosen as one of the 32 in the menu?? Crazy. Basically, I'm not at all happy with this purchase.
Pros: Very nice sound. Nice integrated amp that seems very clean. Mic and stuff for bluetooth is included.
Cons: Vacuum Florescent display sucks. Controls are not all similar to previous generation head units, so now I have 2 head units in 2 cars, both Kenwood, but they use two different control methods. (same buttons do different things). I don't care what direction you're driving, if its' sunny or not, if it is daytime you can't see the display without shielding it from light from above. If it isn't hidden under your dash somehow from light above, that curved display lens will have glare.
Nice radio but I little complex to work. Love the remote
I've used many different big name brand stereos. I love Kenwood Excelon decks for their usability and sound control, and not to mention some really nice displays. Using Crutchfield makes installing a stereo super simple and doesn't require a professional installation if you're a novice. The thing I love about Crutchfield is that they include required installation materials like a wire harness that connects to your factory harness and if your vehicle has a custom bezel, Crutchfield includes that as well. I recommend Crutchfield to everyone looking for car electronics!
Pros: Ease of use, installion materials, sound quality! Bluetooth is awesome, no more cords for my iPhone/iPod.
Cons: I dont currently have any!
This is a great cd player for the money love the blue tooth feature with pandora and the ability to make and receive phone calls.
Pros: Great price with lots of hi tech features.
Cons: Not a one.
I don't have any issues with this unit. I really like the Bluetooth feature for answering phone calls. Works great. FM radio stations are easier to tune in and are stronger than the stock radio. All in all it's very nice. I didn't rate very high for coolness factor. Just another single din receiver to me. Do these things really have to cost this much? I spent over $270.00 for my package.
Pros: Easy to use, great Bluetooth, good reception.
The receiver is overall a nice one. I have some minor issues. To cycle through the random option on the usb , it only does a folder random, to do all random, you have to hold in the button. You should be able to cycle through all of them by pressing the button and not having to hold it in. The color change is a nice feature, I was able to match my interior lighting pretty well, but was surprised there was only one shade of red, but multiple shades of blue, green, etc... Some of the buttons are small, but I can still use them. It does have a lot of sound control, and the radio tuner works well. It was very easy to connect, but im having trouble getting my cell to work with the Bluetooth (I guess it does not work with all phones). I have had all Pioneers before, so this takes some getting used to, but I would recommend this to anyone who asked.
Pros: Very stylish. Easy to hook up.
Cons: Buttons are small. Could be more colors to choose from.
Awesome Stereo Reciever. Just what I needed. So easy to Install With Crutchfield. Not one problem. Crutchfield your the best of the Best. Love the Display And the easy pairing Bluetooth. I rate you A 10++++++ Def Love your Profession Team
Pros: Everything is A Pro From Crutchfield
Cons: Notta one
The reviews read that it works with Iphone for pandora. What it should read is that it needs to be plugged into the head unit for it to work. Did not know that prior to order. Also when bluetooth links up, slowly, it does not start automatically and requires you to press play for your content to stream over bluetooth. Perhaps this is a setting but I cant seem to find it. The sound quality is very good. The amount of adjustments is astounding compared to 10 years ago. This is hooked up to an alpine amp, 6x9's, 5 1/4's that are driven by the amp and the 3 1/2's driven off the head unit. The sound is seamless. There is no discernible tell between the amp music and the head unit sound.
Pros: Plenty of adjustments, lots of color and brightness options.
Cons: Does not do pandora and iphone without cable hook up. Does not auto play on bluetooth once it connnects. The bluetooth connection takes longer than what I'm used to sometimes upto 30 seconds.
This is my first Kenwood head unit after mostly sticking with JVC. Overall, it is a really good value and I have found that the Bluetooth connection to my iPhone to work flawlessly. The external microphone works great and reception is very good. It was easy to install and with the Crutchfield instructions and included adapters it was a breeze. Looks great and sounds even better!
Pros: Great sound, good Bluetooth connection and easy pairing. Quality product
Cons: Buttons for navigating the preset stations are a little small and difficult to select, particularly when driving.
Wanted to like it and sound quality was definitely excellent. However, the reason I returned it was because it took forever for it to autodetect my wife and I's iphones (4 and 5s) through bluetooth. That was a deal-breaker... not for me, but my wife since she drives this car. Got the Alpine CDE-154BT and it solved the shortcoming of this Kenwood unit. Still, overall a good unit but not for me.
Pros: Sound quality and looks
Cons: Bluetooth response too delayed when reconnecting with head unit.
I purchased this unti to update a 20 year old Kenwood unit in my 89 Mustang. You would expect a better unit due to the advanced technology, and this unit does just that. More than twice the power and a tuner that grabs stations clearly that the previous unit couldn't even pull static on. Makes the entire system sound significantly better. A real batgain for the price. Oh, and the wiring harness from the old unit still worked!
Pros: Value, Tuner Performance, Power, FM Sensitivity
Awesome sound compared to factory Infinity gold in my Grand Cherokee. Very easy to install
Pros: The amount of display colors allows you to get a close match to the factory look
Cons: Not as compatible with Android as it is with iPhone
Fit perfect and works great in our car. Easy hookup to the iPhone.
Excellent radio, love the Bluetooth control, works great installation was easy with crutchfields help.
Pros: Bluetooth, iheart radio, Pandora
Cons: No hd radio
This is my first Kenwood that I have ever owned (always bought pioneer until now), and I am impressed with the quality of their product. I have listened to I-heart radio and sirius/xm on our recent roadtrip to LA, and let me tell you its nice having more options to listen to than radio espanol when out on the highway. I highly recommend this deck if you are upgrading from a stock system. I upgraded my 2000 suburban and the family loves it! The bluetooth connection works flawlessly with my phone and tablets, as my son watched a movie all the way in the 3rd row and had no issues with it dropping out. Connects up to my android devices without a hitch. Thank you, Crutchfield, for turning me on to a new brand with outstanding quality.
Pros: Android device connectivity, sound quality, sleek look, hands-free calling all spot on.
Cons: Sirius-xm a little bit of a pain to use. Wish it had a connection for the stock dimmer so that it matches the interior illumination. Seems to have issues picking up bluetooth when a device is on top of it (dash/windshield) vs. In front of it.
This is a SUPER Head unit for the price...I know people who have bought WAY more expensive units only to say the sound coming out of mine blows theirs away....YOU CAN NOT GO WRONG with this Unit
Pros: Easy Bluetooth pairing Looks Great
I was looking for an all-in-one radio that had Bluetooth & Satellite Radio and this one fit the bill at a good price! It was easy to install. Great sound and the hands-free phone sounds good too.
Pros: Great price. Easy to install. Great sounding radio. Hands-free works and sounds great.
Cons: Just a minor con: When I switched my Sirius subscription to this radio, I had to upgrade to SiriusXM as this radio is made for only SiriusXM. It's a little more money, but with this new subscription I now have access to online listening.
I installed this unit on a Mitsubishi Galant with Infinity system and the difference is from ground to sky. I think this unit almost duplicate the power, voice and loudness of the factory stereo. The good thing is that Crutchfield sent me the wire harness to use the Infinity amp for free. I can't wait to change the factory speakers for a real bang.
Pros: Bluetooth for music and calls. Iphone/Android friendly. Pandora,......
Cons: I don't believe I can control iHeartradio via bluetooth...
by far the best value for money. i love everything about this deck, except i don't like how the buttons "click". i wish it was a softer click, but beggars can't be choosers. excellent sound control with the menu as well. 9.5/10!

MOSFET Amplifier: The Kenwood KDC-X598 is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit. The power output specs for the KDC-X598 are as follows:
6ch/4V Preamp Outputs + Sub Control: The KDC-X598 features front, rear and subwoofer 4.0-volt preamp outputs. The front and rear speaker preamp outputs are balance and fade adjustable. The subwoofer preamp output is non-fading. The Kenwood KDC-X598 offers the following subwoofer controls, when you are using unit's subwoofer preamp output.
Front & Rear High-Pass Filter: The KDC-X598 features a High-Pass Crossover for the front & rear channels when your front & rear speakers are connected by the unit's speaker-outputs or preamp-outputs. You can adjust the high-pass crossover from "Through", 100, 120, or 150 Hz. The "Through" selection is a full-range setting.
Speaker Settings: The Speaker Setting function tailors the head unit's audio settings according to the type of speakers in your vehicle. You may select a Speaker Setting of 'SP-Off' (flat/off), 'SP-OEM' (for OEM factory speaker systems), 'SP-6x9/6' (for systems with 6" and 6"x9" speakers), or 'SP-5/4' (for systems with 4" and 5" speakers).
EQ Pro: The KDC-X598 is equipped with Kenwood's EQ Pro. The integrated equalizer offers 8 preset sound modes (Rock, Pops, Easy, Top 40, Jazz, Natural, Drive EQ, or User) suitable for the music genre of your choice. The Drive EQ mode is an EQ preset that helps reduce road noise. The User mode allows you to manually adjust the head unit's 3-band parametric EQ (Frequency, Level, and Q-Factor).
|Bass||60, 80, 100, 200 Hz||-8 to +8||1.0, 1.25, 1.5, 2.0|
|Midrange||0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.5 kHz||-8 to +8||0.75, 1.0, 1.25|
|Treble||10.0, 12.5, 15.0, 17.5 kHz||-8 to +8||Fixed|
Note: You can store EQ Pro bass, middle and treble tone settings for each source (Disc, Tuner, Aux, USB, iPod, and Pandora/iHeart Radio).
Sound Enhancements: The head unit provides further sound enhancements for your car audio system.
Volume Offset: The level of each source may be independently adjusted to prevent radical leaps in output volume when switching from one source to another. The available settings range from -8 to 0 (-8 to +8 for Aux source).
Key Beep: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.
Bluetooth Technology: The Kenwood KDC-X598 is equipped with built-in Bluetooth (ver. 2.1 + EDR) allowing you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Kenwood KDC-X598. Visit Kenwood's Support Site for a complete list of compatible Bluetooth enabled phones.
Secure Simple Pairing (SSP) + Auto Pairing (for iPhone): With Secure Simple Pairing (SSP), you can easily pair a Bluetooth enabled phone to the Kenwood KDC-X598 without having to enter pin codes or go through complicated settings. When a paired Bluetooth device is in close proximity to the receiver, the auto connection function automatically pairs the two units. You can pair up to five Bluetooth-enabled devices to the Kenwood head unit with a maximum of two Bluetooth phones and one Bluetooth audio player connected at one time (but only one can be used at a time). You can even pair your Apple iPhone by simply connecting it to the Kenwood head unit via USB and following a single prompt on the head unit's display.
Hands-Free Communication w/ External Mic: The head unit supports Bluetooth hands-free communication for your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone. During a conversation, you can switch between the Private Mode (talking directly on your cell phone) and the Hands Free Mode.
Note: The external wired microphone offers improved audio quality versus an integrated microphone, so you can be heard easier over noisy traffic and road noise. You can adjust the volume level and noise cancellation of the microphone without affecting the other sources. The external microphone features an attached 10' cable terminated by a right-angle 3.5mm connector which plugs into the mic input on the rear-panel of the head unit. The microphone offers an integrated mounting bracket which can be clipped to your vehicle's sun-visor or taped to your dash. The external microphone measures 0.525" (diameter) x 1.505" (depth).
SMS: If your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone is compatible with SMS (Short Message Service), the Kenwood head unit will notify you when a message has been received. You must then use your phone to check the message. You cannot read, edit, or send a message through this unit.

The KDC-X598 will be able to control basic playback functions of your Bluetooth device's stored music; such as Play/Pause, Skip Next/Previous, Fast Forward/Rewind and Random/Repeat. The head unit will also display your stored music's song information; such as Artist name and Song/Album title. The KDC-X598 also supports audio streaming of music apps downloaded on your smartphone with metadata display and limited control. Advanced music control of your music apps will still need be done via your Bluetooth-enabled smartphone. When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call. Once the call is finished, your streaming music will resume.

Simply press-and-hold down on the head unit's Answer Button to engage Siri and use the included microphone to communicate with Siri. Siri's voice will heard through your vehicle's speakers. All Siri functions including hands-free calling, music search, setting reminders, text-messaging, audible navigation, and more can be done through the KDC-X598 and its microphone. The head unit's display will only indicate hands-free calling and Bluetooth audio information (all other functions of Siri are only audible through the Kenwood KDC-X598; visual data will still need to be viewed from your iPhone device).
Note: You can ask Siri to get directions to a destination and the turn-by-turn instructions will heard through your vehicle's speakers, while the on-screen map still displays on your iPhone with Siri. The head unit's audio is attenuated while Siri provides audible directions.
Disc Compatibility: The unit features a single disc player that will playback CD-Audio and finalized CD-R/CD-RW audio discs. An android phone does not charge when connected to the usb port.[ DONALD Dec 03, 2014 ]
Yes. So does my wife's At&T phone and my Amazon Kindel.[ ROBERT Nov 26, 2014 ]
My iphone charges when connected to the usb port of my Kenwood, i dont own an android, but dont see why that would be different.[ RUSSELL Nov 26, 2014 ]
No clue about android phone compatibility but the text is impossible to read in any form of daylight, independent of the color of text chosen. Frustratingly, the color of white that the text appears in when in the menu is very legible, even in the daytime but there's no option for selecting this color. The "features" are completely non intuitive and require carrying around the owner's manual to make even small adjustments. Very poor design overall.[ KARL Nov 25, 2014 ]
Yes an android phone charges while connected to the usb. But it does not charge as quick like when you use the wall charger. I have a Samsung S4 and when I used the navigation app on my phone when connected to the usb it actually lost battery life. So it does okay if you are not using your phone while it's charging from the usb.[ JUDITH Nov 25, 2014 ]
Yes it does.[ KEN Nov 25, 2014 ]
I've got an iPhone, and it charges when connected to the USB. most all USB's have voltage to them so i'm sure an android would charge as well.[ GARY B Nov 25, 2014 ]

Yes.... Any phone connected to the USB port will charge.[ JASON Nov 25, 2014 ]

It plays music also. I have two Excelon units , and the adjustability of the units really help my sound even with factory speakers.[ Michael Jun 13, 2014 ]
It streams Bluetooth music from any source including the phone. Mine works great![ Ricky Jun 12, 2014 ]
I have an iPhone 5 with about 300 songs on it, and this unit does indeed play music from my phone via the Bluetooth connection. I don't even have to take my phone out of my holster! When I get in the car, all I have to do is press one button on the unit (or the remote control) to turn the Kenwood on; within 20 seconds or so, my phone is automatically connected via Bluetooth. Included among your choices for audio input, such as Tuner or CD, is BT Audio, and if you choose that input and press the Play button, music from your phone will play through your car stereo. NOTE: It took me a week or so to discover all of the "details" needed to make that happen! First, you must pair your phone with the unit via Bluetooth so that they "know" one another. Also, the default setting for Bluetooth audio is to send the music through only the front speakers, so you must change that to send music through all speakers, assuming you have both front and rear speakers. All of the directions and information needed are in the owner's manual, so you will need to refer to those instructions. If someone calls you on your phone, the music will mute and you will hear the caller announced - pressing one button will accept the call; you will hear the phone audio through the car speakers and your voice will be picked up by the microphone (included with the Kenwood unit) that you will have mounted somewhere near your steering wheel or dash. If you wish to make a call while listening to music, you press that same button and the music mutes while the display shows "VOICE CONTROL", and you can simply say "Call John Doe on mobile" or "Call Mom at home". You MUST attach that microphone during installation and must use it in order for the caller to hear your voice! I did not realize that until after the unit was installed and had to pull it out and install the microphone afterwards - a little bit of a pain that could have been avoided by doing it with the initial installation. Good luck and enjoy![ JAMES E Jun 12, 2014 ]
I have used the bluetooth to play music or stream music off of my phone. It also has a Pandora option, too. But I have not tried another device that has bluetooth...however, I would imagine that as long as you can connect to the radio's bluetooth (which is easy to do with my phone) you should be able to play![ KARENA Jun 12, 2014 ]
It's not hard to do at all. Remove the trim from around the door and run your microphone behind it. Its a simple install.[ ANTONIO May 05, 2014 ]
Yes we installed the mic to be honest it wasn't that hard but i really dont like it but as far as the question of hooking it up its fairly easy[ JOANN May 02, 2014 ]
I mounted mine on the interior trim around the windshield. I simply ran the wire up the pillar that the windshield mounts to and ticked it under the plastic trim and under the headliner. I did not try the internal mic as I wasn't aware there was one.[ NEIL C May 01, 2014 ]
I recently purchased and had the unit installed at a local stereo shop for 40.00. As i watched them install the external mic, it appears very easy, just remove the plastic section of the support, run the wire underneath and clip the mic to the top. The past kenwood stereo had only an integrated mic and this new one with the external mic works WAY better. I would highly recommend use the external mic[ JOHN May 01, 2014 ]
At first, I did not install the external mic. However, when my iPhone 5 was connected via Bluetooth with the head unit and I made a phone call, the other party could not hear me. When I contacted Kenwood about that, I was informed that the external mic needed to be connected, which I did, and it has worked perfectly since then. The installation was relatively easy - pull out the head unit, run the mic cord up behind the dash into the opening, plug into the back of the unit, then hide the cord and use the adhesive pad to mount the mic. I placed the mic on the top of the steering column and it had worked fine.I was not aware that the head unit has an integrated mic? Does it? If so, it did not work very well with my initial set-up.[ JAMES E Apr 30, 2014 ]
I installed mine right in front of my gauge cluster. It wasn't hard to install, and I don't beleive the stereo has an internal mic. I could be wrong though.[ ALAN Apr 30, 2014 ]
I have installed two of these head units and both times I installed the mics. So I cant say if the internal mic works well. Honestly I didnt know it had an internal mic. One was instslled in an 07 kia sorento pretty easy. The other in a 02 dodge ram not easy and no good place in the pillar to install so I put it on the outside of the instrument cluster. Back in the corner so you couldnt see it. Both times I checked on line to see how the dashes came apart. Hope this helps.[ JESSE Apr 30, 2014 ]
We installed the BT mic next to the steering wheel with little effort. We ran it straight from the head unit behind the steering cover. It works great, we just had to adjust the sensitivity down thru the head unit to alleviate some distortion.[ MICHAEL Apr 30, 2014 ]
Matthew, it was incredibly easy and works well. I mounted it right by the rearview mirror. I looked at a YouTube video and it was no problem at all 15 minutes at most.[ THOMAS J Apr 30, 2014 ]
