Our take on the Kenwood Excelon KDC-X697

The KDC-X697 is more than just another pretty faceplate, though. This versatile receiver also gives you great performance with multiple entertainment options, plus the security of Kenwood Excelon's remarkable 2-year warranty. .

Big display, big performance

The Kenwood Excelon KDC-X697 CD receiver is a great choice if you don't want (or need) a double-DIN (4") receiver in your car. You can adjust the color of the button illumination to suit your tastes, and you can switch its three-line, full-dot display over to an easy-to-read two-line configuration with larger font size.

The KDC-X697 is more than just another pretty faceplate, though. This versatile receiver also gives you great performance with multiple entertainment options, plus the security of Kenwood Excelon's remarkable 2-year warranty. .

Play it your way

Kenwood designed this receiver to integrate with all your gear.

  • Connect your iPod® or iPhone® to the receiver's front-panel USB input, and you'll blaze through your tracks and playlists, as dedicated "Search" and "Return" keys cut down on the need to work through menus when you're looking for a specific song.
  • Pandora Internet Radio and iHeart Radio users will appreciate this receiver's excellent built-in controls — you can scroll through your stations and give a thumbs-up or thumbs-down right from the receiver's face.
  • What about Android, you ask? If you store your music on an Android device, download Kenwood's free Music Control app and enjoy a variety of search and playback features when your phone is plugged into the front-panel USB.
  • If you're in the mood to kick it old-school, slip in a CD and take full advantage of this receiver's 24-bit digital-to-analog converter. It converts the raw data on your disc, including MP3, WMA, and AAC files, to smooth, lifelike sound. (It'll make a big difference in the music on your iPod or thumb drive, too.)
  • For satellite radio subscribers (or those who plan to be), the KDC-X697 works with SiriusXM's outboard tuner (not included), so you can enjoy coast-to-coast reception of your favorite talk, sports, and music programming.
  • Dual front and rear USB ports give you extra expandability options.
    Kenwood KDC-X697

The CD slot's protective cover slides out of the way when you're inserting a disc.

Shape your sound

Wimpy bass and treble controls can't compare with the KDC-X697's 3-band parametric equalizer, high- and low-pass filters, and selectable bass boost, along with settings that let you adjust for your car's speaker setup.

And don't forget another Excelon sound advantage. If you're building a car audio system, one of the keys to the getting the most out of your amplifiers is a clean, powerful signal from your preamp outputs. All Kenwood Excelon receivers feature 4-volt preamp outputs that will give your amps the strong signal they need for top performance.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?

In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Kenwood stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and this Kenwood, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Why did I give this unit four stars instead of 5 when I gave it five stars in every category? Really only one thing. No Bluetooth. I got this unit as a lower cost substitute for the unit I really wanted, the Blaupunkt Toronto 420BT, which was not in stock with no expected stock date. But this unit is incredibly easy to use. It has three sets of four volt preamp outs. Two USB inputs. And the Kenwood Music Editor light software makes navigation of even large capacity USB drives a breeze. Sound quality is excellent and it looks great. The 420BT is available now, but I am sold on this Kenwood unti. It's a keeper.

Pros: 3 sets of 4 volt preamp outs, ease of navigation, 2 USB inputs

    Cons: No BT.

Even though I bought a fearful isles unit, it is still a very great head unit. I bought for the price, name and the 4 volt sub pre outs. Would recommend this to anyone.

Pros: Tons of features and expand ability. 2 USB hookups and 1 3.5mm aux.

Cons: When the sun hits the display with direct light, it makes the display hard to read fi you use the color change setting. Could also just be because of the dash in my truck.

    2000 Ford Explorer
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I ordered this Kenwood receiver from the factory refurbished option. Big mistake. It was clearly not refurbished at all. I installed it in my Ford Explorer without any real trouble but when I tried to turn the volume up past 13 or so (out of 50) the speakers would distort really bad and then the receiver would just shut off. I called tech support and they were very helpful in trying to troubleshoot the problem. First, I had to re-check all of my connections behind the receiver. Nothing was wrong back there. Then I had to individually check my speakers to see if any of them were blown, which would cause the amp to shut off, but none were. So, after a full day of me wiring and re-wiring my receiver, tech finally came to the conclusion that it was a faulty amplifier inside the receiver. I was told that this model was discontinued and that I could get my money back or use it as credit to a different deck. I chose to replace it with a brand new Kenwood KDC-X498 which is a bit of a downgrade but equivalent in price. Tech support was really knowledgeable and friendly but I won't be buying factory refurbished electronics from Crutchfield again.

Pros: It looked nice and was discounted because factory refurbished.

Cons: Factory refurbished actually means re-boxed without being fixed

Crutchfield response on 6/17/2014 Kenwood inspects their refurbished products before sending them to us, however sometimes the stereo performs well on a test bench, but just doesn't hold up in the real world. That's the risk that comes with choosing refurbished gear. We sell a lot of these refurbished stereos and most of the time they work just like new. But when they don't, it's good to know that we back them with our standard 60-day money-back guarantee. So even if the bargain doesn't work out, like in this case, we'll take it back and either give a refund or help the customer select a replacement.

Looks and sounds great in my '06 Ram. Huge improvement over the factory junk. Installed super easy with all the correct adapters and install kit from Crutchfield. The Bluetooth work flawlessly every time. Loving it so far!!

Pros: Great sound and endless ways to change the sound for your personal preference.

Cons: The volume knob is a little on the dainty side and can be difficult to grip at times.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking for something so that I could play music via usb in my car and was undecided between this and the excelon x597. Eventually decided on this because of being able to control all colors, including display. I had to have it red to match my cars interior lighting. There were also factory refurbished options for this head unit, which ended up being cheaper than buying a new 597 anyway. For being factory refurbished, there was literally nothing to indicate it. Looked brand new, came with everything packaged nicely, everything worked well. Crutchfield makes installation extremely easy by providing you with the stuff you need. Overall very satisfied

Pros: Looks nice, sounds good, 2 usb inputs and aux as well, good value for money

Cons: Would be 5 star but its somewhat cumbersome to find what you're looking for a lot of time, a lot of just scrolling through menus with the knob, hard to find songs you're looking for. Won't be as annoying when I get my steering wheel control adapter, but I haven't gotten around to getting one yet.

    Average at best

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this after being super, super happy with the last Excelon deck I had- a KDC-X911. Excelon's sound and component quality had me go back to it after moonlighting with Alpine for a bit. Happy with the sound, build quality, and display. HATE the controls.

Pros: I'm running my speakers off deck power, 120 Hz HPF- they sound great. Display looks awesome- matches my Audi's illumination perfectly. App syncing with Pandora and iHeartRadio is nice. Lot of customization and user control in audio controls.

Cons: Controls are horrible. Pushing source should switch the source- not take me a to menu where I use the rotary knob (which is counter intuitive to the direction I want it to work). No preset radio buttons, even though there's plenty of space for them- someone just got lazy when designing this. Integration with iPhone exists, but it sucks. I was super excited to get another Excelon deck, but I'll probably be replacing this soon.

I don't like the scrolling display. Its nearly unreadable. I had to turn scrolling off so it doesn't look as bad. Otherwise this is an OK unit for the price. Works great with Iphone 5.

Pros: Works great with Iphone 5. Lots of illumination color options to match your dash.

Cons: Display is hard to read when it scrolls

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

As far as sound quality goes, I'm happy with this deck. It offers a decent amount of audio options, and the build quality seems fine. As far as grievances go, there are a few: First up is the LCD display. When it's displaying a static image, it's fine. But the second any scrolling starts the text becomes practically unreadable. I think this is unacceptable at this price point. Second, if you plug something into a USB port, it will automatically switch to that input with no apparent way of disabling it. This is really annoying if you have a setup like me, with the front USB port charging my phone while it plays music via line-in into the deck. I want the input set on auxiliary, but it switches to USB every time I get in my car and plug my phone in, so I have to manually change it back. Final thoughts: I'm considering returning this because of the poor quality LCD display.

Pros: Good RMS power, build quality

    Cons: scrolling text is unreadable

Great unit for the price. It has alot of custom colors and detailed sound eq settings to get the sound the way you like it. Front and rear usb ports work great to charge a phone while playing music off another. Was disappointed that it would not read music off my Samsung galaxy s4 but was happy that it at least charges it.

Pros: Works great with iphones, easy to navigate the screens to customize color and sound eq to get it just the way you want it.

Cons: Does not sync up to read music off my Samsung galaxy s4 even with the kenwood app.

I'll just send it back....

    Clean look and great sound

JustinR from Tempe, AZ on 1/4/2014

Really nice sound shaping available through the receiver. It has a really clean look as well, which means that without the remote, getting to simple adjustments can be challenging. App mode plays anything through the rear iPhone input, and having the rear usb makes the entire installation much more sleek, as there is not a wire coming out of the front and getting in the way. Spotify works through it, of which is 90% of my listening. It is a little difficult to see during the day, as the front is extremely reflective and the display doesn't get terribly bright, but the amount of colors available make finding an easy viewing level easy at night. In addition, being able to control all sorts of HP and LP filters, subwoofer levels, and bass mid treble levels without having to hook up an external eq is a big plus. Overall a great unit.

Pros: Great sound, clean look, rear usb/iPhone input.

Cons: Reflective front glass, lack of buttons for a clean look is a trade off for some ease of use.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've had two Alpine headunits before this one, but I decided to try something different. I almost wish I hadn't. It sounds way better than the stock headunit that I replaced in my new vehicle, but that's to be expected. The one thing I really hate are the controls. As one other review said, couldn't they include more buttons? When I initially bought it, I thought ahh, I can live with that because all I want to do is listen to my iPod. But it's actually a pain. My past two decks have been way easier to navigate. There is also zero information about settings, such as how to shuffle songs on an MP3 unit, in the quick manual they give you. The three-line display is beautiful and was the reason I chose this unit. It's nice to have when listening to music on your iPod. The variety of color illuminations is also pretty sweet. But the unit itself is a little difficult to read sometimes. All in all, not a bad headunit, but there are definitely better ones out there for the same value.

Pros: - Good sound quality - Three-line display - Front and rear USB ports - Variable illumination colors

Cons: - Difficult to navigate - Hard to read sometimes

    Great sound- horrible controls.

I think my headline says it...I truly can't believe that anyone would use the head unit to control their iPod. The controls on this thing are a joke, as in horrible, as in so bad returning it and spending $50 less on one that actually had buttons. The sound is fantastic...though that won't change with the less expensive unit.

    Pros: Sound

    Cons: Controls

I never hooked up this unit. When I began running the wires, I saw that the Sirus docking station I had would not work with the Kenwood radio-I would need to buy a dedicated receiver for it and have to pay for an additional subscription. The only brand that allows you to use the Dock and Play station is JVC, so I purchased one of their radios and returned this one.

When I started looking for a deck, I wrote down all the things I would want. They were all included with this deck. I like the display, its a little small and dark, but so is the rest of my interior so it kind of matched. Alot of people dont like that, but wasnt a dealbreaker for me. Not having detailed instructions leaves you guessing all the time and will take you on an adventure every time you want to do something different. But this deck sounds absolutely terrific and installs quick and easy. Once you get used to the controls you really feel good and realize all the good things this deck has to offer.

Pros: Looks awesome, I personally do not like all the buttons on the front. I like the way the CD slot is hidden and you dont have to flip the face to get to it. multi-color display and 4v aux outputs are all reasons i bought this deck.

Cons: Cannot adjust different frequencies from front and rear with the high pass crossover Long delay when adjusting Qfactors and frequencies in the equalizer No Qfactor on high frequency No rear Aux Analyzer is just a visualizer Instructions are very brief

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

When I was researching for a new headunit, I didn't need a whole bunch of bells and whistles. I knew I would eventually add new speakers, a sub, and amps, so I planned for it. This headunit is everything I wanted. The radio function is very good, the dual usb inputs are a nice option, and the thing just looks cool. The scrolling colors on the keys and lcd screen are super sweet and are a very nice touch. I think my only gripe is the presets for radio stations. If you want to switch stations, you have to go into the menu for the radio and do it that way. No buttons on the face for this function. I didnt know this before I bought it but its alright. It definitely isn't something to mess with while driving. Overall, its a solid unit and I would recommend it to anyone.

Pros: -Solid sound -Awesome color scroll feature -Dual USB inputs

Cons: -Radio station switching is a hassle

Great looking radio. Sound is really great as well as versatility. It was easy to install and Crutchfield provided all of the installation components as well as clear instructions.

Pros: Has a multitude of song sources as well as Sirius Radio.

Cons: The dial is hard to read because of its angle and font size. Impossible to see in bright sunlight. I'm sure most of this is because of the location of my radio.

    Very nice radio

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am a huge fan of Kenwood car audio. This is my fourth Kenwood head unit and I'm very pleased with it. I decided to buy this after my 20 year old factory cassette tape player finally gave up in my 1993 Mustang coupe. I wanted a head unit with a rear USB port, a good warranty, easy to use, pandora controlls and without Bluetooth. This head unit is perfect. This has a nice clean look to it. This display is pretty much the same as last year models.

Pros: Front and rear USB ports. Sharp lookin face plate. Very easy to use controlls. Great price and warranty. It's a Kenwood backed by Crutchfield customer service.

    Cons: None

Excelon Series: The KDC-X697 CD receiver is part of Kenwood's Excelon series line-up. It incorporates the latest technologies and delivers the highest sonic performance. From advanced audio tuning capabilities, crossover and equalizer system, high-voltage preouts (4V), and a two-year warranty - Kenwood Excelon represents exceptional audio quality with long-lasting dependability.

24 Bit D/A Converter: The Kenwood Excelon KDC-X697 utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The Kenwood Excelon KDC-X697 is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit. The power output specs for the KDC-X697 are as follows:

    • Full Bandwidth Power: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20-20kHz, 1% THD)
    • Maximum Output Power: 50 watts x 4 channels

6ch/4V Preamp Outputs: The KDC-X697 features front, rear and subwoofer 4.0-volt preamp outputs. The front and rear speaker preamp outputs are balance and fade adjustable. The subwoofer preamp output is non-fading. The front, rear, and subwoofer preamp outputs are fixed to the rear chassis of the head unit.

Note: You can turn the head unit's built-in amplifier off to improve the quality of the sound from the head unit's preamp outputs.

Front & Rear High-Pass Filter: The KDC-X697 features a High-Pass Crossover for the front & rear channels when your front & rear speakers are connected by the unit's speaker-outputs or preamp-outputs. You can adjust the high-pass crossover from "Through", 100, 120, or 150 Hz. The "Through" selection is a full-range setting.

Subwoofer Controls: The Kenwood Excelon KDC-X697 offers the following subwoofer controls, when you are using unit's subwoofer preamp output.

    • Low Pass Filter: The receiver features a built-in Low Pass Filter control for the preamp-output, when the output is set to Subwoofer. You can select from 85 Hz, 120 Hz, 160 Hz, or off.
    • Subwoofer Phase: You can adjust the phase of the subwoofer output between 180-degrees (Reverse) or 0-degrees (Normal).
    • Subwoofer Level: Once the Subwoofer preamp output is activated, you can independently control the subwoofer preamp output level (-15 to +15) from the CD receiver.

Speaker Settings: The Speaker Setting function tailors the head unit's audio settings according to the type of speakers in your vehicle. You may select a Speaker Setting of 'SP-Off' (flat/off), 'SP-OEM' (for OEM factory speaker systems), 'SP-6x9/6' (for systems with 6" and 6"x9" speakers), or 'SP-5/4' (for systems with 4" and 5" speakers).

EQ Pro: The KDC-X697 is equipped with Kenwood's EQ Pro. The integrated equalizer offers 8 preset sound modes (Natural, Rock, Pops, Easy, Top 40, Jazz, Powerful, and User) suitable for the music genre of your choice. The User mode allows you to manually adjust the head unit's 3-band parametric EQ (Frequency, Level, and Q-Factor).

    EQ Pro
    Frequency Level Q
    Bass 60, 80, 100, 200 Hz -8 to +8 1.0, 1.25, 1.5, 2.0
    Midrange 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.5 kHz -8 to +8 0.75, 1.0, 1.25
    Treble 10.0, 12.5, 15.0, 17.5 kHz -8 to +8 Fixed
Note: You can store EQ Pro bass, middle and treble tone settings for each source (Disc, Tuner, Aux, USB, iPod, and Pandora).

Sound Enhancements: The head unit provides further sound enhancements for your car audio system.

    • Bass Boost: The Kenwood CD receiver features a Bass Boost control that can be set to the following levels (BB1, BB2, BB3, or Off).
    • Loudness: This function enhances low and high frequencies to make the sound clearer lower volumes. There are 3 levels (LV1, LV2, or Off).
    • Supreme Setting: When MP3 or WMA files encoded at a low bit rate (less than 96 kbps, 44.1k, 48kHz) are played, the Supreme Setting function restores their high frequencies so the sound quality is closer to files encoded at a high bit rate. The processing is optimized for the compression format and the bit rate used. When the Supreme Setting is Off, the unit plays the original sound stored in the audio file.

Volume Offset: The level of each source may be independently adjusted to prevent radical leaps in output volume when switching from one source to another. The available settings range from -8 to 0 (-8 to +8 for Aux source).

Key Beep: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

    iPod/Android/AUX Integration

iPod Direct Connection w/ DAC Bypass: The KDC-X697's front- or rear-panel USB port acts as an iPod/iPhone high-speed direct connection when used with the optional Kenwood USB Direct Connection Cable (113KCIP102, sold separately) or the USB/iPod cable that comes with your iPod/iPhone. If you have an iPod nano (7th gen), iPod touch (5th gen), or iPhone 5; use the Lightning-to-USB cable that came with your Apple device to connect to the head unit. Using either cable allows audio playback, music navigation, information display, and charging of select iPod/iPhone models from the KDC-X697.

    • DAC Bypass: This USB connection allows your iPod/iPhone's large music libraries to be loaded instantly to the head unit and sound quality to be maximized through the head unit's 24-bit D/A converter, allowing for a Signal to Noise ratio up to 110dB. The Kenwood head unit supports audio playback of music files and podcasts stored on your iPod or iPhone, as well as music apps streamed to your iPhone.
    • Music Control: You can choose to control the iPod/iPhone from the head unit or from your iPod/iPhone's clickwheel or touchscreen.
      • Head Unit: The Kenwood head unit allows you to navigate your iPod's music by Playlist, Artists, Album, Genre, Composer, Song, or Podcast. You can search these categories alphabetically or using a percentage search (0.5%, 1%, 5%, 10%). • iPod/App Mode: In iPod/App mode, you can navigate the stored music on your iPod/iPhone from its clickwheel or touchscreen. You can also listen to your favorite music apps (such as iHeartRadio, SiriusXM,, Rhapsody, & Slacker) from your iPhone (iOS 3.0+) through the Kenwood head unit and your vehicle's speakers. You will continue to use your iPhone's touchscreen to navigate your apps. Not all apps will be compatible with App Mode. Access to your iPhone's downloaded applications will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone to connect to the Internet.
    • Information Display: The KDC-X697 will display your iPod/iPhone's music file information when you are controlling your iPod or iPhone from the Kenwood head unit. The head unit will display Track number, Elapsed playing time, Artist name, Song title, and Album label. It does have a favorite button, however; when I tried that it only changed the station. [ HECTOR M  Dec 14, 2013 ]
I have not found anyway to change the channel display. [ MAHASTI  Dec 13, 2013 ]
Actually very strong. It's picking up stations & locking them clearly, that the factory radio would skip over on seek. And, this is with a factory antenna on an '84 Cadilliac Eldorado ! [ JAMES F  Dec 13, 2013 ]
I listen to satellite radio most of the time so I can really say how well the FM reception is. It is a nice unit. [ BARBARA  Dec 13, 2013 ]
is about the same as other radios, when in range it sounds very nice, and clear almost like a cd. hope this helps [ RODOLFO  Dec 13, 2013 ]
I guess I am just hoping it will be as good as my factory unit. I like the local FM, I have no interest in satellite radio. [ Mike  Dec 13, 2013 ]
I don' find myself listening to FM too much anymore due to the fact I have about 3000 songs stored on my mini flash drive. However, I feel the reception is great - even with my aftermarket shorty antenna! The longer I own this radio the more I like it. The sound and the power it has is phenomenal. Much improved over the 7 year old Kenwood unit I originally had in the car, [ STEFAN  Dec 13, 2013 ]
not bad not exceptionally special... if your worrued about reception i would look into xm or sirus radio [ ERIC  Dec 12, 2013 ]
I also drive 40 miles to work every day and the radio station are still going strong. [ JARED  Dec 12, 2013 ]
I can't begin to tell you how awesome this head unit is!!! Absolutely no problem receiving stations far or near....and quality sound that can't be matched!! I'm still getting used to all the bells and whistles but it just keeps getting better! [ CHRISTOPHER  Dec 12, 2013 ]
