Bought this unit to replace a the last kenwood just a year old, bought because i was told it wold work with my wired remote, well it would not had to by a new remote,if this one fails they will not be anymore kenwood in any of my vehicles,i guess they don't make'em like they use too.

Pros: works good ,lots of clear sound will see after a winter of storage if it last

Cons: remotes from one year to the next are not inter changeable

    Kenwood KMR-44OU - Extremely Disappointed

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I always thought Kenwood was a good name and stood behind their products but I was wrong! Granted, this unit came with a 12 month warranty but, 1 month after the warranty expired, and only 3 months of actual use last year, it's dead!

    No Regrets !

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this system for a good quality sound in my 95 Nitro, and that's exactly what I got when I paired it with a set of Polk speakers. Crutchfield has always provided me with good quality products at very great prices and this was no exception. I don't have any problems whatsoever hearing this system over the motor noise and whatever other noises being on the water can throw at you.

Pros: Great quality, great price and easy install.

    Cons: none

    Boat is now Bumpin!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very nice unit and pretty easy to use... Matched it with some 6 1/2" Alpine Coax's to upgrade the system on my boat. Very good sound and with much flexibility in how you setup the audio mix, my boat is bumpin' now!! Pretty easy install and wiring diag makes it nearly idiot-proof.

Pros: Clean, quality sound; detachable face; iPhone compatible

    Cons: None (so far...)

    Adamm from TX on 11/20/2011

I bought the MP445U at because crutchfield discontinued the part. However I can't see any difference between the 445U I have and this 440. I hooked up with Sirius sat radio and sound quality is excellent. Display is very easy to read and driving at night time, the display isn't screaming look at me with bright lights and flashy letters. One feature I love is back up battery. I cleaned my battery yesterday and when I connected everything back up my radio still had all the presets in place! iPod hookup is great and remote is great size. I did order my sat radio tuner and adaptor with mount bracket from crutchfield. Quick and easy shipping. Installed in an 01 Durango SLT Plus with Infinity sound system.

Pros: Great display Easy to use Sat radio

    Cons: None

Probably used the stereo less than 40 times and one month out of warranty it died. Not a very intuitive interface but really disappointed that after a little more than one season ( three months in great lakes) the stereo no longer works. We had a rough weather night and maybe the wave pounding was too much but a marine stereo needs to handle the jostling. We had a Sony that made it through five seasons. Will not try Kenwood again.

Failed after less than a year. Kenwood refused to cover under warranty. Do yourself a favor and buy a different marine unit because this one won't stand up to conditions.

Quick shipping, easy hook up and sounds good. No skipping even in rough water. Only problem for me , is to many added options that I'll never use.

I bought this thing at the nearest big box store actually, cause I hate waiting for something I can get instantly lol. Installation was great and easy. Lots of features and what not. However after not even 3 weeks went by, I get this USB error message that flashes all the time, I've tried everything from power off, to unplugging the harness/battery cable. Nothing worked at all. Still have the error. Cant use any USB device, though everything else works fine. Not sure what to do, would give it 1 star, but when it worked, it was just a bit of caution.....not sure what I'm going to do. If Kenwood doesn't respond soon, I'll probably just try and exchange it for another one, and hope it doesn't happen again....or just exchange for something else.

    Do not buy Kenwood

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The folks at Crutchfield are great, but this Kenwood is TERRIBLE! Try turning it up past 25 on the volume dial and the head resets itself. Period. CD, iPod, Tuner, it doesn't matter, they all do it. Then I find out that this is a "feature" of Kenwood. that's bad news because once bitten twice shy. Anything that says Kenwood will never cross my door again.

The stereo has good sound but about a week after the 1 year waranty ran out the USB stopped working. I decided to try a CD, which I hadnt tried yet and guess what? It didnt work either. It has a reset button under the face but it didnt help. Buyer beware!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this Kenwood because I have a similar Kenwood in my truck, which has been quite good so far. Installation was easy and it worked first time with no problems. A remote is NOT included, nor does Crutchfield provide any additional documentation or accessories with this unit. Since this is a marine model, cost is a little higher than a comparable automotive model, but the performance is about the same. This model uses the volume control as a joystick for other functions. That feature takes a little to get used to, but works well for function navigation. Otherwise, the features and performance are similar to what you would expect from models in this price range. Overall, this Kenwood is relatively easy to use and the USB input is turning out to be its most used feature. I'm pleased with this unit and would recommend it to others.

    Great Value

RP from Nashville, TN on 12/7/2010

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this unit at the beginning of the summer. It replaced a 10 year old Kenwood marine unit that was still working, but had no USB or auxiliary input. Having enjoyed it for the summer, the verdict is in. I would buy it all over again. Load a handful of USB memory sticks with your favorite tunes and just leave them on the boat. That way it is no big deal if you forget the I-pod. I suggest an auxiliary amp and some good speakers like the Polk MM691 speakers. You'll have a floating concert hall that sounds amazing. A nice feature would have been a floating wireless remote. The wired remotes work well, but they don't move around the boat with you. This should be your winter project if the tunes on your boat are lacking.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had ordered this for next day delivery right at the cutoff time, so instead of ordering on line, I called it in. Whoever took my order assured me that he could still get it out for next day. While ordering, I gave a wrong zip code for my credit card which caused some problems getting the payment processed. I was called back twice to correct this and to update my order status, which by now was a quite a bit of time after the cut off. My stereo arrived the next morning as promised. The whole time, each person I talked to was very cordial and helpful. While installing I had a question about what to do with a couple of the wires that wasn't addressed in the instructions and your tech help quickly told me what to do, again being very cordial. All things concidered, there must have been quite a bit of extra effort going on in the background to get me the stereo the next day, which too many companies are not willing to do, I will definately recommend and order from Crutchfield again. Stereo chassis could have better located tabs to account for thicknesses found on boats, but very happy with the stereo's sound and features.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Love this music center. I wanted to be able to play CDs and allow my friends and daughter to play music from their ipods and iphones too. I have the player down below where it does not get wet or exposed to the sun but still wanted the marine grade for the humidity and heat when the boat is closed up. I wanted front accessible Aux and USB connections with no cable for the USB as most do. This unit has it all. Most of all I wanted a unit that looks cool without being flashy and the controls are user friendly. An important spec I looked for in a player in a boat's small space down below decks is to be able to turn the volume down in the evening without losing music fidelity and this unit is one of the few that offered this and it works really well. At the lowest volume setting the clarity is superb. This is not an issue if you have your music blasting away but if you like it low in the evenings then its important. I'm really happy with this unit and Crutchfield tech support helped me get it installed under the starboard counter on a weekend.

    Great stereo fort he price

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

installed the KMR-440U in a Sea Ray boat. The installation was very easy, it only took about 30 min. The IPod control is awesome, it allows you to search for songs, artists, albums, etc. The sound is pretty good with the open air speakers. They "joy stick" control knob is easy to use, but you will have to explain it to others trying to operate the stereo.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installation fairly straightforward. Called Crutchfield tech support once and they were very helpful. Good sound and lots of features. Love the ipod usb interface on the faceplate. The only negative is that I don't like the control knob and how it feels when you click it to the left/right/up/down. I'll get used to it in time though I suppose. Overall good unit.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Nice looking stereo, the display looks nicer than I expected. I just installed this unit in my boat a day ago so I gave it a 4 rating instead of 5 since I haven't used it much. I can say that it is very simple to navigate through this unit's features. In fact I'd say it's the easiest menu of any Kenwwod I've owned (8+/-). I wasn't sure I'd like the knob feature, but I love it. This unit has a lot of audio features for the money. Crutchfield gave me excellent support during my installation and with an item I had to return. I'd highly recommend crutchfield and this head unit if your looking for a low to moderately priced tuner with great features.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I Hate it! I'm sure there are good things about this radio (ipod input) but... not for me. I SETTLED for this radio because it was the only black single din marine radio I could find to install in my jeep wrangler. I was not looking for "wow me" options, I want to be able to focus on the road/trail I am driving on and not on all the buttons needed to change a radio station. This radio is NOT user friendly. The controls are like a joystick. (not a fan) Also, the user guide that comes with it is less than minimal.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The USB port is great! I installed this receiver in a Jeep Wrangler because it's the only black marine head unit I could find. The USB port eliminates having to carry CDs plus it doesn't skip when I'm driving in the mountains. Using the joystick/knob to adjust everything is difficult, but I'm sure I'll get used to it. I'd rather have more buttons though. The screen is nice and there are a lot of customizable options.

Marine Receiver: At the factory, the Kenwood KMR-440U Marine receiver has a special water-resistant conformal coating placed on its main circuit board. This protects the circuitry from the harsh, corrosive marine environment. The receiver has special connections on the rear panel for the KCA-RC107MR and KCA-RC60MR wired marine remote controls (sold separately).

Water Resistant Cover (optional): Even though the conformal coating makes the receiver water-resistant, it is still recommended that it be used with a universal marine cover such as the Metra (120999005B, sold separately) or Scosche (142ACM1, sold separately)

    Display Features

Detachable Face: The unit features a single front loading CD face that detaches from the chassis to deter theft. The CD player comes supplied with a soft black fabric, draw string face case to protect the detachable face when you have it off the chassis.

LCD Display: The Kenwood Marine KMR-440U is equipped with a dot-matrix LCD display with white backlit text and a black background.

Display Patterns: The Kenwood Marine KMR-440U offers 5 display patterns. You can choose from a single line of text, 2 lines of text, source status, clock display, or a spectrum analyzer.

Illumination Effect: This function sets whether the head unit's key illumination color is changed in conjunction with the key operation and volume level.

Text/Title Scroll: The KMR-440U will display CD text, Audio file text and Satellite and HD radio text. You can turn the scrolling feature "on" to scroll longer titles across the screen.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: When the unit is in Standby mode, the face/button illumination is "keyed." In addition, while the unit is in Standby mode, you can turn the clock display on or off. When the Clock Display is turned on and the unit is in Standby mode, the Clock Display is also "keyed." Pressing and holding the source button turns the unit off completely.

Dimmer: The dimmer function will dim this unit's display automatically when the vehicle light switch is turned On when you connect orange/white Illumination wire of this player.

Power Off: The power will be turned off automatically after approximately 20 minutes have lapsed in standby mode.

Favorite Memory Control: The head unit's Favorite Control feature allows you to save six "Favorites" for easy access. You can select a "Favorite" playlist from your connected iPod, your favorite radio station from the unit's built-in AM/FM tuner or connected Satellite Radio or HD tuner (both sold separately), a favorite telephone number from your mobile-phone using the optional Bluetooth hands-free kit (sold separately), or an audio setting. This allows you to have instant access of your favorite Radio station, telephone number, iPod playlist, or audio setting from one list on the head unit's display.

Demo Mode: This unit features a Demo mode which can be turned "on" or "off" within the menu.

    Audio Section

24 Bit D/A Converter: The Kenwood Marine KMR-440U utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior CD sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The Kenwood Marine KMR-440U is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit. The power output specs for the KMR-440U are as follows:

    • Full Bandwidth Power: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20-20kHz, 1% THD)
    • Maximum Output Power: 50 watts x 4 channels

Rotary Volume Control: The Marine CD receiver uses a 6-way rotary volume control that increases and decreases the volume of the stereo from 0 to 35. The rotary knob also controls other audio settings such as Bass, Treble and preset EQ settings. In addition, the rotary knob allows you to scroll through and select your music tracks when the Music Search function is activated.

Speaker Settings: The Speaker Setting function tailors the System Q Sound Control settings according to the type of speakers in your vehicle. You may select a Speaker Setting of "SP Off" (flat), "SP OEM" (for OEM factory speaker systems), "SP 6x9/6" (for systems with 6" and 6"x9" speakers), or "SP 5/4" (for systems with 4" and 5" speakers).

System Q Sound Control: Seven EQ curves are preset into memory, allowing you to recall the best preset EQ curve for different types of music. Each preset has its own level settings for bass (100Hz), midrange (1kHz), and treble (10kHz). You can choose from the following preset EQ curves - Rock, Pops, Easy, Top 40, Jazz, Natural, Game, and User.

System Q Sound Control: Six EQ curves are preset into memory, allowing you to recall the best preset EQ curve for different types of music. Each preset has its own level settings for bass (100Hz), midrange (1kHz), and treble (10kHz). You can choose from the following preset EQ curves - Rock, Pops, Easy, Top 40, Jazz, Natural and Game.

Bass/Treble/Mid Control: The Kenwood marine receiver also features independent Bass, Treble and Midrange control. You can adjust each one from -8 to +8db. The bass frequency is adjusted at 100 Hz, the treble frequency is adjusted at 10 kHz and the midrange frequency is adjusted at 1 kHz.

Bass Boost: The Kenwood Marine CD receiver also features a Bass Boost control that can be set to the following levels - LV1, LV2 or Off.

Volume Offset: The level of each source may be independently adjusted to prevent radical leaps in output volume when switching from one source to another. The available settings range from -8 to 0.

Source Tone Memory: This feature allows you to store System Q bass, middle and treble tone settings for each source (CD, Tuner, Aux, and USB).

3-Sets of 2.5V Preamp Outputs: The KMR-440U features front, rear and subwoofer 2.5V preamp outputs. The front and rear speaker preamp outputs are balance and fade adjustable. The subwoofer preamp output is non-fading. The front, rear, and subwoofer preamp outputs are fixed to the rear chassis of the head unit.

Front and Rear High-Pass Filter: The KMR-440U features an independent High-Pass Crossover for the front and rear channels when your front and rear speakers are connected by the unit's speaker-outputs or preamp-outputs. You can adjust the high-pass crossover from "Through", 80, 100, 120, 150, or 180Hz. The "Through" selection is a full-range setting. This feature is very helpful when you have smaller-type speakers in the front and larger-type speakers installed in the rear of the vehicle.

Low-Pass Filter: The receiver features a built-in Low Pass Filter control for the unit's subwoofer preamp output. You can select from 60, 80, 120Hz or "Through". The "Through" setting allows your external amplifier's crossover network to do all the filtering for your subwoofer.

Subwoofer Level: You can independently control the subwoofer preamp output level from the CD receiver. You select levels between -15 to +15.

Subwoofer Phase: You can adjust the phase of the subwoofer output between 180-degrees (Reverse) or 0-degrees (Normal).

Audio Preset: You can register one audio setting into the unit's preset memory to be recalled at any time. The Audio Preset memory saves bass, midrange, treble, subwoofer, and high-pass filter settings.

Dual Zone: The Dual Zone mode allows you to output the Main source and the Auxiliary input separately for the front and rear channels. You can select whether the auxiliary input will play in the front or the rear.

Tel Mute: The KMR-440U features a cell-phone mute wire (brown) in its harness that when hooked up to your car's phone system mute wire will automatically mute the receiver's audio signal when a call comes in.

    Radio Functions

AM/FM Tuner: The Kenwood Marine KMR-440U features a built-in AM/FM tuner. You can choose one of three tuning modes: Auto 1 (seek tuning), Auto 2 (cycles through and tunes the selected band's preset stations only with each button press), or Manual.

Tuner Presets: The KMR-440U's tuner features 3 FM banks (1, 2, 3) and 1 AM bank for storing presets. You can store 6 presets for each AM/FM bank giving you a total of 18 FM presets and 6 AM presets.

Auto Memory Tuning: Not only does the CD receiver's tuner allow you manually enter your desired presets you can choose to have the unit automatically put stations with good reception in the memory banks automatically; this is a handy feature when traveling.

Satellite Radio Ready: There are several options for connecting an optional XM or SIRIUS Satellite Radio receiver to this receiver:

    • SIRIUS Satellite Radio: To receive SIRIUS Satellite Radio, you can connect the optional SIRIUS Universal Vehicle Tuner  and the optional Kenwood Sirius Satellite Radio Interface (package #700SIRKENW, sold separately); or you can connect the optional Kenwood Sirius Satellite Radio Interface and the SiriusConnect vehicle docking kit (package #700SIRPKEN, sold separately), along with your compatible SIRIUS Dock & Play receiver.
    • XM Satellite Radio: To receive XM Satellite Radio connect the optional CNP2000UCA XM Tuner and the Kenwood CNPKEN1 adapter cable (package item number 700XMKEN2, sold separately).

Note: A subscription is also required to receive satellite radio programming from SIRIUS or XM.

HD Radio Ready (with iTunes Tagging): With an optional Kenwood HD Radio tuner (113HR300, sold separately), you will be able to receive digital AM/FM broadcasts from local stations where available. This new technology will significantly improve audio quality and reception, as well as include information such as artist name and song titles or traffic news, viewable on the receiver's display. The Kenwood KTC-HR300 HD Radio tuner (113HR300) is also capable of iTunes tagging. iTunes tagging gives you the ability to tag a song (up to 50) and stores it to a connected iPod. The next time your iPod is connected to iTunes, the tagged songs are displayed with the option to purchase them from the iTunes Store.

Note: You cannot connect both a Satellite Radio Interface and HD Radio tuner to the head unit.

    Disc Playback

MP3/WMA Playback: The KMR-440U can play MP3 (8-320 kbps) and WMA (32-192 kbps) files recorded on CD-R and CD-RW discs in ISO9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, Romeo, and Long file name formats. Each disc should have a maximum of 8 directory levels, 50 folders, and 255 files per folder with a maximum of 512 files and folders. During MP3/WMA playback, the unit displays any recorded ID3 Tag (Ver.1) information. The head unit will display up to 60 characters.

Supreme Setting: When MP3 or WMA files encoded at a low bit rate (less than 96 kbps, 44.1k, 48kHz) are played, the Supreme Setting function restores their high frequencies so the sound quality is closer to files encoded at a high bit rate. The processing is optimized for the compression format and the bit rate used. When the Supreme Setting is Off, the unit plays the original sound stored in the audio file.

Music Search: The Kenwood Marine AM/FM CD receiver features a Music Search feature which allows you to scroll through and select your MP3/WMA music folders and files, as well as scroll through your audio CD's music tracks using the head unit's rotary knob.

Direct Music Search: You can search music tracks and files directly by entering the track/file number using the include wireless remote control.

Last Position Memory: If the unit is shut off or switched to the tuner mode while a CD is playing, the next time CD is selected as the source, playback will resume from the point where it left off.
