Tired of playing the same old scratched-up CDs every time you head out for a day on the water? With the Kenwood KMR-M308BT digital media receiver, you can enjoy your entire digital music library without missing a beat. With no CD player to worry about, Kenwood's engineers were able to pack this receiver with everything you need to enjoy great tunes from a variety of devices. And this compact "short-body" design will fit into almost any boat.

Bluetooth® for your boat

The KMR-M308BT features built-in Bluetooth so you'll enjoy the convenience of hands-free calling and wireless music streaming. If you're an Internet radio user, you can listen to your favorite stations from iHeart Radio®, Pandora®, Aupeo, or TuneIn when you're out on the water. Whatever you're playing, you and your crew will benefit from Kenwood's Drive EQ technology, which compensates for wind, waves, and other outside noises to achieve maximum sound quality.

Plenty of ways to play

The KMR-M308BT works with all the latest gear, so you can keep the music playing all season long. Got an iPod® or iPhone®? You can plug your player (with optional cable) into the front-panel USB input to access your playlists. Dedicated "search" and "return" buttons, plus handy tools like AppMode, Alphabet, Percentage Skip, and Related Search, help you find your music fast. The 13-digit LCD display makes it much easier to see song titles and channel information.

You can also connect to the latest SiriusXM tuner (sold seperately, subscription required) and enjoy your favorite music, sports, and entertanment programs on the water, whether you're on an inland waterway or up to a hundred miles offshore.

If you store your music on an Android device, Kenwood's Music Control app allows you to enjoy a variety of search and playback features when your phone is plugged into the front-panel USB. You can also liven up your cruise by plugging in a thumb drive, or by jacking another device into the front-panel AUX input. This versatile receiver plays MP3, WMA, WAV, and even FLAC files.

Made for marine use

Kenwood built this receiver to handle the extremes of the marine environment. It features a conformal coating that keeps moisture out of the internal circuitry, plus durable covers for the USB and aux inputs.

    Fantastic Receiver

AJC from Cincinnati, OH on 9/29/2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this with a pair of Alpine speakers and installed all into a 15' bass boat. This Kenwood unit is easy to use and the bluetooth feature is incredible. Flawlessly streams music and the Kenwood app makes it easy to gather and play all of the music off your device.

Pros: Looks great Provides plenty of power

Cons: Bluetooth range seems a bit shorter than 30ft (not a problem when installed in a smaller boat)

    bye bye CD....

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've had a number of Kenwood marine head units and have been very happy with all (two boats, multiple Jeep Wranglers). This one is no different, except the lack of CD playback. Connected via 3.5 mm jack (IPod Classic and Bluetooth) all work well. Good FM reception also.

Pros: easy to install. tiny chassis with no CD transport.

    Cons: none

    Good Purchase for Pool a

Rex P from Louisiana on 8/14/2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Crutchfield came through again. I built a brick and wooden box (8' x 3') adjacent to our pool and installed the unit within, put the face of the unit on the outside so it appears to be like a dashboard. I had to use a 110v to 12v converter to power it and the 8 outdoor weather proof speakers used in the surrounding pool enclosure. This Kenwood unit does the job of pushing the speakers without an additional amplifier and the sound is excellent. I especially like the tuner reception since we are in the country and that can be an issue. I expect that on a boat it would also have good reception. I have used it as a Bluetooth device and also plugged in my iPhone directly for the Pandora ap and loved that it also charged the phone while playing it. All in all, a good purchase for this application and marine

Pros: Does what it says and surprises you with its performance. Powers 8 outdoor speakers in an area 30 x 60 with volume to spare and good features

Cons: You have to hold on to the instruction manual since programming and function controls can be a bit tricky if you only do them once and forget what you did. When you lose power (as I did from a power outage), I needed to reset a few stations and had to go back to the book.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Have this radio inside my Tsukayu fairing on my Yammy V Star 1100 and it works as needed. I loaded a few hundred songs on a USB drive and it plays clear, loud, and without skipping. Radio is also hooked up to a Rockford Fosgate Punch Amplifier to help give it that extra oomph. Overall, great radio for what I need it for. Nothing fancy, just a great working radio. Bluetooth works well also, but is not as loud when using bluetooth to stream songs.

Pros: Not flashy Water resistant Works flawlessly Easy navigation menu Small

    Great Receiver

A great receiver for the price. Installation was super easy. Put this in my Mastercraft ski boat to replace an old Sony. Made a big difference in sound quality. Of course as usual Crutchfield service and shipping are the best.

Pros: Easy installation, great sound quality.

    Cons: NONE

    solid sound

LanceH from Gig Harbor, WA on 7/13/2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The sound is a big improvement over the Alpine deck i replaced. Having the bass boost options, and the mid-range and loudness settings really helped dial in the sound on my ski boat. The built-in digital amplification is more than sufficient and i don't mind in the least that i opted to not pursue including a separate amp.

Pros: excellent sound. lots of options for dialing it in optimally.

Cons: the adjustments and features are not intuitive. am keeping the owners manual nearby.

    Decent Head Unit

Chris P from Brighton, MI on 7/9/2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

    Decent head unit. Affordable.

    Pros: Easy install, sounds good.

Cons: I only get 2 channels when streaming audio via bluetooth. With other media connected via AUX or USB, I have full functionality. Not sure if I have a bad HU or if this is typical, but it's an issue nonetheless.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed this unit in my 1986 Ski Nautique 2001. Setup was very simple and has all the feature anyone could ask for. The sound qualitiy is awesome. Only problem I ran into was in Bluetooth mode only front two speakers had output, I called Crutchfield tech support, the gentleman I spoke to was very helpful and walked me through the setup to change the output settings to all speakers. Only spent maybe two minutes on the phone with tech support>

    Pros: Great sound quality!

    Cons: None

    Love it!

Unit works as it should and really makes boating more pleasurable. The bluetooth function is a must-have. I would purchase this unit again. I haven't had it too long so I can't say how reliable it is, but if it is like other Kenwood units I've owned, I won't be let down.

Pros: Ton's of features packed in an inexpensive unit.

    Cons: None so far.

Phenomenal new head unit for my pontoon boat!

Kevin7011 from Excelsior, MN on 6/16/2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I replaced my old Sony CDX-M30 head unit (which failed after 2 years) with this new Kenwood. I'm just completely amazed with the sound this new deck puts out. Just awesome. ...And with the features and specs this thing has (Bluetooth, Pandora, USB, etc.), it's is an incredible value. Looks great too. I've extremely happy with my purchase. It easily connected to my android smartphone wirelessly through bluetooth and the tunes were rockin with my Polk db651's using Pandora, etc. I can even use the USB port to charge my phone if needed too. Very cool. Minor nit picks would be the bluetooth range (the music starts to cut out after moving the phone 10 feet away from the unit), and no supplied case for the detachable face plate (but for the price, I can't be too upset). Great job JVC/Kenwood!

Pros: Great sound, Great looks, Great features, Great value.

Cons: No case for detachable face

    good choice for me

Pros: Does everything I need, sounds great and priced well.

    Marine Stereo

    MJB from SD on 5/17/2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Unit has not yet been installed, but I am really not a big Kenwood fan. I continually find the user menus to be too complicated. My big complaint with this one, though, was to find that buying a Marine rated stereo still had me tying the thing to live battery. That's a tough proposition for a watercraft with sporadic use. More specifically, this was a sailboat app and we normally disconnect battery after every use in order to preserve the charge. So boom - there go all the presets and audio settings and clock. Really?

    Pros: Price point

Cons: Kenwood user menus too stinkin complicated. Benefits from buying a Marine rated receiver? Not much!

    Works as advertised

Works as advertised. Fits nicely in my Woody's fairing on my HD Heritage Softail. Powerful enough I can hear tunes via 4 5" speakers even with Vanes and Hines pipes.

Pros: Exactly as described in the details. Directions are complete and accurate.

    Cons: None.

    Great price, well built unit.

Anonymous from Elmira, NY on 4/18/2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've been a big fan of the kenwood head units. I have one in every one of my vehicles and haven't been let down yet. This one looks to be no exception. This marine grade head unit lacks nothing in the power and options department. I haven't played a cd in quite a while, so I figured losing that wouldn't be an issue. I didn't even realize that the unit would be a shorter depth which is just an extra added bonus.

Pros: Price, power, input options, output voltage.

    Cons: None as of yet

    Marine, Display, & Remote Features

Marine Rated: At the factory, the Kenwood KMR-M308BT marine digital media receiver has a special water-resistant conformal coating placed on its main circuit board. This protects the circuitry from the harsh, corrosive marine environment.

Note: Even though the conformal coating makes the receiver water-resistant, it is still recommended that it be used with a universal marine cover such as the Metra (120999005B, sold separately) or Scosche (142ACM1, sold separately).

Detachable Face: The Kenwood KMR-M308BT features detachable face plate to deter theft. There is no protective face case included. An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can be purchased for this unit. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.

Single-Line LCD: The Kenwood head unit features a single-line, 13-segment, backlit LCD with white text and black background, plus blue button illumination.

    • 12Hr/24Hr Clock: The head unit can be set to display a 12hr or 24hr clock. The unit also displays the day (Sun, Mon, Tue, Wed, Thu, Fri, or Sat).
    • Display Illumination/Clock Display: With your vehicle's key in the accessory or start position, the head unit continues to display the clock and button illumination during Standby mode. Pressing and holding the source button turns the unit off completely.
    • Brightness & Dimmer: You can dim the LCD and button illumination to better suit the time of day. You can adjust the maximum brightness of the LCD and button illumination from 0-31. The Kenwood logo does not dim.
Note: This unit features a Demo mode which can be turned On or Off within the menu.

Optional Marine Wired Remote: The Kenwood KCA-RC35MR wired marine remote control (113RC35MR, sold separately) is designed to withstand the harsh marine environment. The Kenwood add-on wired remote features source selector, music search, and volume control buttons.

Note: The head unit's wired remote input wire (blue/yellow) also lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately). Please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to see if your vehicle is compatible.

    Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth Technology: The Kenwood KMR-M308BT is equipped with built-in Bluetooth (ver. 2.1 + EDR) allowing you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

    • Hands-Free Communication: HFP 1.5 (Hands Free Profile), OPP 1.1 (Object Push Profile), PBAB 1.0 (Phone Book Access Profile).
    • Audio Streaming: A2DP 1.2 (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP 1.3 (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Kenwood KMR-M308BT. Visit Kenwood's Support Site for a complete list of compatible Bluetooth enabled phones.

Secure Simple Pairing (SSP) + Auto Pairing (for iPhone): With Secure Simple Pairing (SSP), you can easily pair a Bluetooth enabled phone to the Kenwood KMR-M308BT without having to enter pin codes or go through complicated settings. When a paired Bluetooth device is in close proximity to the receiver, the auto connection function automatically pairs the two units. You can pair up to five Bluetooth-enabled devices to the Kenwood head unit with a maximum of two Bluetooth phones and one Bluetooth audio player connected at one time (but only one can be used at a time). You can even pair your Apple iPhone by simply connecting it to the Kenwood head unit via USB and following a single prompt on the head unit's display.

Bluetooth Hands-Free Communication: The head unit supports Bluetooth hands-free communication for your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone. The controls of the KMR-M308BT can be used to dial a number, answer an in-coming call, or end a call. The unit also includes an external microphone (featuring adjustable gain), so you can carry on your side of the conversation while listening to the caller through your vehicles speakers. During a conversation, you can switch between the Private Mode (talking directly on your cell phone) and the Hands Free Mode.

    • Answering a Call: When a call comes in, a ring-tone will be heard through your vehicle's speaker and the caller's name or phone number will be displayed. You can answer the call from the head unit's front-panel controls, or setup the head unit to automatically answer the incoming call immediately or after 1-30 seconds. The KMR-M308BT also supports the Call Waiting function, so you can answer another incoming call while suspending the current call you are on. Your compatible cell-phone must also support this feature.
    • Dialing a Number: Using the KMR-M308BT, you can dial a phone number in one of the following ways:
      • Entering a Phone Number: Allows you to directly dial a phone number up to 32 digits from the head unit's control knob or remote control.
      • Speed (Preset) Dialing: Allows you to register up to 6 phone numbers for quick dialing. The preset numbers can be accessed from the head unit's Control Knob.
      • Phone Book: You can dial by using the downloaded phone book. You can download phone book data from your cell phone to the KMR-M308BT. Up to 600 numbers can be stored for each registered cell phone. Each number can be up to 32 digits long and each name can be up to 50 characters long.  Stored phone numbers can be categorized by General, Home, Office, Mobile, or Other. You can search each category of the phone book in alphabetical order.
      • Call History: The Call History is a list of calls that have originated from and were received by this unit that you can dial. You can select Outgoing, Incoming, or Missed calls.
      • Voice Dialing: If your mobile phone supports voice recognition, then you can dial out by voice command. Simply speak into the included microphone.

Note: The external wired microphone offers improved audio quality versus an integrated microphone, so you can be heard easier over noisy traffic and road noise. You can adjust the volume level and noise cancellation of the microphone without affecting the other sources. The external microphone features an attached 10' cable terminated by a right-angle 3.5mm connector which plugs into the mic input on the rear-panel of the head unit. The microphone offers an integrated mounting bracket which can be clipped to your vehicle's sun-visor or taped to your dash. The external microphone measures 0.525" (diameter) x 1.505" (depth).

SMS: If your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone is compatible with SMS (Short Message Service), the Kenwood head unit will notify you when a message has been received. You must then use your phone to check the message. You cannot read, edit, or send a message through this unit.

Wireless Audio Streaming (w/ Metadata Display): The Kenwood KMR-M308BT also supports wireless audio playback (AD2P) and control (AVRCP) of a Bluetooth enabled audio player or smartphone. The KMR-M308BT will be able to control basic playback functions of your Bluetooth device's stored music; such as Play/Pause, Skip Next/Previous, Fast Forward/Rewind and Random/Repeat. The head unit will also display your stored music's song information; such as Artist name and Song/Album title. The KMR-M308BT also supports audio streaming of music apps downloaded on your smartphone with metadata display and limited control. Advanced music control of your music apps will still need be done via your Bluetooth-enabled smartphone. When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call. Once the call is finished, your streaming music will resume.

Siri Eyes Free Control: When paired and connected with an iPhone 4S or 5/5C/5S via Bluetooth (not USB), the Kenwood KMR-M308BT has the ability to access Siri through its front-panel controls and external microphone. Simply press-and-hold down on the head unit's Answer Button to engage Siri and use the included microphone to communicate with Siri. Siri's voice will heard through your vehicle's speakers. All Siri functions including hands-free calling, music search, setting reminders, text-messaging, audible navigation, and more can be done through the KMR-M308BT and its microphone. The head unit's display will only indicate hands-free calling and Bluetooth audio information (all other functions of Siri are only audible through the Kenwood KMR-M308BT; visual data will still need to be viewed from your iPhone device).

Note: You can ask Siri to get directions to a destination and the turn-by-turn instructions will heard through your vehicle's speakers, while the on-screen map still displays on your iPhone 4S/5/5C/5S. The head unit's audio is attenuated while Siri provides audible directions.

    USB/Android Integration

USB Port: The Kenwood KMR-M308BT features a front panel USB (type-A) port that is hidden behind a flip-up cover. Audio Section

16 Bit D/A Converter: The Kenwood KMR-M308BT utilizes a 16-bit digital to analog converter for superior sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The Kenwood KMR-M308BT is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit. The power output specs for the KMR-M308BT are as follows:

    • Full Bandwidth Power: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20-20kHz, 1% THD)
    • Maximum Output Power: 50 watts x 4 channels

2Ch/2.5V Preamp Output + Sub Control: The KMR-M308BT features a 2.5-volt stereo preamp output that you can be adjusted from a full-range rear speaker preamp output to a low-pass subwoofer preamp output. The Kenwood KMR-M308BT offers the following subwoofer controls, when you have the unit's preamp output configured as a sub output.

    • Low Pass Filter: The receiver features a built-in Low Pass Filter control for the preamp-output, when the output is set to Subwoofer. You can select from 85 Hz, 120 Hz, 160 Hz, or off.
    • Subwoofer Phase: You can adjust the phase of the subwoofer output between 180-degrees (Reverse) or 0-degrees (Normal).
    • Subwoofer Level: Once the Subwoofer preamp output is activated, you can independently control the subwoofer preamp output level (-15 to +15) from the digital media receiver.

Speaker Settings: The Speaker Setting function tailors the head unit's audio settings according to the type of speakers in your vehicle. You may select a Speaker Setting of 'SP-Off' (flat/off), 'SP-OEM' (for OEM factory speaker systems), 'SP-6x9/6' (for systems with 6" and 6"x9" speakers), or 'SP-5/4' (for systems with 4" and 5" speakers).

Preset EQ: Eight EQ curves are preset into memory, allowing you to recall the best preset EQ curve for different types of music. Each preset has its own level settings for bass, midrange, and treble . You can choose from the following preset EQ curves; Rock, Pops, Easy, Top 40, Jazz, Natural, Drive EQ, or User. The Drive EQ mode is an EQ preset that helps reduce road noise. The User mode allows you to manually adjust the head unit's Bass (200Hz) , Midrange (2.5kHz), and Treble (12.5kHz) level from +/- 8dB.

Note: You can store bass, middle and treble tone settings for each source (Tuner, Aux, USB, iPod, Bluetooth, and Pandora/iHeartRadio).

Sound Enhancements: The head unit provides further sound enhancements for your car audio system.

    • Bass Boost: The Kenwood receiver features a Bass Boost control that can be set to the following levels (BB1, BB2, BB3, or Off).
    • Loudness: This function enhances low and high frequencies to make the sound clearer lower volumes. There are 3 levels (LV1, LV2, or Off).
    • Sound Reconstruction: When MP3 or WMA files encoded at a low bit rate (less than 96 kbps, 44.1k, 48kHz) are played, the Sound Reconstruction function restores their high frequencies so the sound quality is closer to files encoded at a high bit rate. The processing is optimized for the compression format and the bit rate used. When Sound Reconstruction is Off, the unit plays the original sound stored in the audio file.

Volume Offset: The level of each source may be independently adjusted to prevent radical leaps in output volume when switching from one source to another. The available settings range from -8 to 0 (-8 to +8 for Aux source).

Key Beep: The marine head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: This Kenwood does have the European tuning feature. You may select U.S. standard or European tuning spacing. To switch to/from European tuning spacing: 1.Hold the source button down to turn the unit completely off (display must be off as well). 2.Hold down preset buttons 1 and 5. 3.Press the SRC button, while holding down preset buttons 1 and 5. 4.After the SRC button is pressed, the unit will turn on and you can release the SRC, preset 1 and preset 5 buttons. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.[ Greg  Aug 05, 2014 ]  Staff
i replaced my factory bmw motorcycle with this one, havent had a problem.sometimes it sits for days before i ride.[ CALVIN  Aug 05, 2014 ]
It does not seem like it. But if it does, its very minimum[ Jerry  Jul 15, 2014 ]
I do not know ? Mine is on my golf cart. Mine has a kill switch I turn off when not in use.[ Stanley D.  Jul 14, 2014 ]
I put this on my boat 2 weeks ago. I assume it draws a little power to keep the stored stations, etc. in the memory. I sent mine up with alligator clips on the battery and just disconnect when done for the day. I use the USB and not the radio too much, so finding a station again for me is no big deal.I like the unit.Steve[ Steve  Jul 14, 2014 ]
If you have the yellow wire contacted to the power supply, it will "pull" power from the battery for memory and time I have had this unit installed for 3 weeks and have had no issue with my batteries losing any noticeable charge.[ George  Jul 14, 2014 ]
All radios have a line that has to be connected straight to the battery for the purpose of keeping the time and memory/presets. I've found that this radio does not draw very much power though. As long as you use your boat every other week, your battery should be fine.[ Amy  Jul 14, 2014 ]
I just installed it last night... so I can not answer that ... the lights on the unit turn off though...I am having an issue with the rear left speaker.. Checked my work... all good.. it now looks like the pigtail , or where the pigtail plugs in to the back of the unit. The unit is doing some other , funny things. ( this may just be the operator) so stay tuned.have you had issues with faulty units or pigtails before? This seems rare. or any other ideas? Thanks.[ Scott  Jul 14, 2014 ]
I have only used my Iphone but i am certain all variations will work.[ NORRMAN  Jul 14, 2014 ]

I didn't mount mine in one, but I see no reason for it not to work properly.[ Terry  Jun 24, 2014 ]

It works great with mine. I use Sandisk micro usb drives so the cover closes. I'm using a Scosche ACM1W cover.[ Patrick  Jun 24, 2014 ]
Not sure if it is waterproof. Water resistant, yes, it is marine grade. I installed it in my boat, but it is pretty much untouched by water since it is at the helm.Works well in a boat, but some visibility issues if you have direct sun on the screen.[ Dave  Jun 22, 2014 ]
This unit is not waterproof! It can handle light splashing. Put a watertight cover over it.[ William  Jun 22, 2014 ]
Just installed this season. Definitely marine grade quality, but not waterproof. Can't be submerged.[ BRIAN  Jun 22, 2014 ]

I use an iphone which charges while using pandora so i am sure it would be the same for an android phone. the bluetooth connectivity is an issue for me but at this price it wasn't a biggie for me. i just use it via usb connection every time.[ NORRMAN  Jun 10, 2014 ]
    Yes you can[ TIMOTHY J  Jun 09, 2014 ]
We purchased an antenna, assuming we had to have one. We have no problems picking up stations.[ Ronald  May 14, 2014 ]
This does not come with a built in or external am/fm antenna. I went down to the local auto parts store and purchased one that glues to your windshield for under $20 and I get great reception.[ Daniel Van  May 13, 2014 ]
Yes you need an antenna. It works great with antenna![ William  May 13, 2014 ]
I haven't hooked mine up yet, but I'm pretty sure it will need an antennae.[ BRIAN  May 12, 2014 ]

I installed it with an antenna already mounted. It has the port for one and I would assume you need it. it doesn't seem like it has an internal one to pick any stations up.[ Dave  May 12, 2014 ]
Yes. Unless the Detailed description for a radio indicates an internal antenna, you need an antenna. There are many available - some include weather band capability.[ david  May 12, 2014 ]
there was an antenna wire from my old radio and yes we did plug it in. I am not sure where the antenna is located on my boat but I am able to pick up channels from my home, but I doubt I will have reception on the lake. I hope this helps.[ Blaine  May 12, 2014 ]
Yes u will need to purchase a antenna if your boat doesn't already have one. But they are very cheap. Be sure to get a antenna extending Cable if u are not going to mount the new antenna very close to the reciever[ PROSCAPES INC /  May 12, 2014 ]
Yes need a antenna I went with the hidden power antenna works great[ peter  May 12, 2014 ]
You can control your ipod as you normally do, but what you can not control from your ipod is if you are listening Pandora. you can not skip songs or thums up or down. you have to do it from the radio control. good luck.[ HECTOR  Apr 26, 2014 ]
