Our take on the Kenwood KDC-MP3035

Bring a disc filled with songs in the high-quality AAC format on your next outing — Kenwood's KDC-MP3035 CD receiver will play it, as well as all your MP3 and WMA files on disc. And the song titles will look great on the fold-down face's vibrant fluorescent display.

Bring a disc filled with songs in the high-quality AAC format on your next outing — Kenwood's KDC-MP3035 CD receiver will play it, as well as all your MP3 and WMA files on disc. And the song titles will look great on the fold-down face's vibrant fluorescent display.

The strong built-in amplifier makes your music sound great, but you'll find three sets of preamp outputs for connecting external amplifiers if you want to kick things up a notch. The KDC-MP3035 also offers a low-pass filter on the preamp outputs to block the high frequencies your subs weren't designed to handle, so you get every ounce of performance out of your system.

Fine-tune the sound with the 3-band equalizer, or use the six sound curves for quick adjustments. Looking for more entertainment options? You can connect a portable music player to the rear-mounted auxiliary input. Plus, you can add any of Kenwood's peripheral gear, like a satellite radio, iPod® controller, or Bluetooth® cell phone adapter.

Perft Fit in a 2001 Tundra

Brian from Copperhill, Tennessee on 4/15/2008

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this unit along with a set of Component Speakers in the front doors of my Step Sons 2001 Toyota Tundra Access Cab, and a set of 6 3/4 inch Door Speakers in the rear doors. WOW, what a sound difference! The best part of it all is that with Crutchfields detailed instructions, my kids could have done this installation. Every step for a professional installation was right there on the sheets, and it went so quickly! The only part of this that was time consuming was fitting the new tweeters with the component speakers, into the factory holes. Just a little cutting with a razor knife, and they pop right in! Awesome Sound in the Tundra! I own a Double Cab Tundra, and will be changing my system out very soon! Thanks Crutchfield!!!!!!!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The reason I chose this deck is because back where I live, Kenwood is popular for their Head Units. Many of my friends have Kenwood decks and pay more than I do for car electronics. This deck is awesome, I love the fold-down face too! It's also easy for me to control the bass on my subs, the remote also comes very handy...but not when everybody who rides in my car is fighting over the remote...LOL. I love this deck, no doubt about it. I highly recommend anyone to get this deck. It was a cinch to install...I had a guy friend to help me and I assumed he knew what to do, but he didn't, so I installed the deck myself! Not bad for a girl huh? Thanks again Crutchfield for your great and affordable prices and awesome products!

    1989 Nissan 240SX
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased this unit to replace a burnt up Sony for a 1989 240sx. First off the unit fits into the factory mount (without the din surround) and bolts right in (using the flat screws), However the trim piece does not fit around it, and leaves a pretty substantial gap, but I havn't seen a head unit that does fit correctly in this model car. I am using this unit to power two pioneer 6x8's in front and two polk momo 6x9's in the rear, and as expected this receiver falls short of powering these high wattage speakers, but it does a decent job at it, better in some areas than the sony did, worse in others (most notably distortion in the mids). There are a plethora of settings to choose from to improve sound, however with my current setup I cant move the equalizer more than 1 off default, and the presets are completely unusable for the rock music I listen to at anything close to loud levels, most likely due to the low power output vs the high power speakers, and it appears these settings would be very useful in an amplified setup. The control layout is a little frustrating, the volume button is very sensitive to going into "menu" mode, which takes a little getting used to, and the station/track adjust is very touchy. Overall I like the head unit for the price, and I hope and expect more out of it when put to use on an amplified speaker system, and would likely be ideal for an average speaker setup.

    excellent reciever

this is one heck of a reciever.the installation process was a piece of cake.head unit fell right into my 97 ford f150.crutchfield tightened me up with easy to follow for the sound.this kenwood puts out a wide range of excellent can easily tailor it to your reception is middle of the road.your best sound will come from the cd end.i have the factory speakers in my truck and i was shocked to hear how good they sound.i will upgrade to better speakers only because i plan on getting an amp and subwoofer.reason i give it a 4 out of 5 is because of the small volume knob and the idea of using a joystick type of knob.outside of that this kenwood is wicked

Good head unit for the money!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is my first Kenwood purchase and I'm pretty satisfied with it. Instllation was a cinch with the supplied bracketry and harnesses provided by Crutchfield. The AM/FM tuner is excellent, CDs sound good (or as good as they can in a 93 F-150). My only complaint are the small volume knob and the not-totally-intuitive joystick like control knob used to select all other settings.

    alot to learn to control

    1999 Ford Taurus
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

O.K., One of the best sounding and power controllable units Iv'e ever had. This unit allows you to seriously take control of your sound if you can have the patience to do it!The control knob on the right side is ultra sensitive, almost impossible to use while driving.Your best bet is to use the remote to do your business when it comes down to it.The subwoofer control and the volume offset let you get the most out of your sound allowing you to really fine tune everything to your liking.Plenty of preset eq levels and of course your own user setting as well.I have a 99 Taurus that i installed the kenwood in and you can't go wrong with this unit. The schose adapter kit makes what would be a nearly impossible install a snap due to the heater controls built into the factory unit.I went with four pioneer 6x8's in the factory mounting spots and two twelve inch subs hooked to a 1000 watt amp and this thing is incredible!!!The only and i mean only set back to this unit is the touchy controls. But the quality and performance well exceed the minor set back.I would seriously recomend this unit to anyone who wants peak performance for an outstanding price.I give it a 4 1/2 out of 5 due to the controls.Don't let the controls hold you back from the best bang for your buck!

    Great Stereo

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this HU to replace the factory in my 2002 Chevy Cavalier that I bought just to drive to work. This stereo is very affordable and sounds awesome. The controls are no smaller than any other aftermarket unit out there. Once you read the instructions and learn how to control sounds and functions it will be easy to complete. Once it is set, you shouldn't need to change it anyway. The remote is just right to fit my hand and controls everything anyone would need to. The reception of the tuner is fantastic and I should know being located in the great mountains of eastern KY. I am currently using my factory speakers which are blown but the Kenwood still sounds great and I expect it to be even better when I replace the speakers. I recommend this unit to anyone looking for to replace their factory unit. I hope this review helps anyone making the complicated decision of a great aftermarket unit.

    Those gosh-darn buttons!

Fred from Santa Cruz, CA on 4/6/2007

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

When I was looking to swipe out my car's (really) outdated HU, I got on the horn and started talking to the oh-so-wonderful people at Crutchfield. I finally settled on this unit. For the price - definitely worth it.<BR><BR>Its got a beautiful display that is honest-to-goodness bright, especially at night. As there is no dimmer control, you get the same level of brightness anytime. It doesn't bother me as much because my stereo sits really low in the console. Reading the display is a challenge, but Ive made my peace.<BR><BR>The only other thing I can gripe about are those gosh-darn buttons! The selector buttons at the bottom of the unit are small, even by my standards. During the day, its not as bad, but at night, be prepared. Seeing them is akin to finding bin Laden's hinding place. Thats when the remote comes in handy. Speaking of which, the remote is a behemoth of a thing. Be prepared and have a crane.<BR><BR>Going back to the buttons, the volume button is also the Fader/Balance/... control selector and if you manage to hit a bumpy stretch of road while adjusting the volume, you'll inadvertedly start changing your fader/balance/... Its annoying at first, but if you get into this bit of trouble, just flick a switch on the other control knob (FFW/REW/AM/FM) and it'll exit with no changes. That works on the remote as well. <BR><BR>The right-hand control knob is a pill. Its almost impossible to do what you want to do without doing anything else. Use the remote. Save yourself the agony and a couple strands of hair. <BR><BR>All in all, a really good unit. Only 4 stars because of the button issues. Definitely worth more than what I paid for it, though.

I was really surprised in how well the stereo and the dash mount fit my truck. The install instructions were very helpful. Like everyone said the controls are hard to get used to but after a few days that wears off.

    Great sound

quintin from Greenwood, Sc on 3/6/2007

This CD player is great. It sounds alot better than my Alpine did and my 2 12's" hit harder. I agree with the last person that the controls are difficult to learn at first, but I would not trade it for a JVC. Once you get use to the controls this is worth alot more that $150.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was pretty excited when I got this unit. It sounded great. The display was big and clear. The radio reception was not very good though. The controls could have been laid out a little better. I often found myself changing the equalizer settings when I went to adjust the volume. I returned the unit for a JVC head unit and I could not be happier. Crutchfield handled this transition beautifully.

    External Device Controls

Overview: The Kenwood KDC-MP3035 AM/FM CD receiver features a fold-down detachable face, rear auxiliary input, 3 sets of 2-volt preamp outputs, CD changer and Satellite radio controls, HD radio, Bluetooth and iPod ready functions, plus AAC/MP3/WMA playback. The CD player comes with a soft face case and an IR wireless remote control. The unit's amplifier is rated at 22 watts x 4 channel RMS and 50 watts x 4 channel peak.

Fold-down Detachable Face: The unit features a fold-down face that detaches from the chassis to deter theft. There is a red indicator light that will flash on the unit after the face has been removed to warn potential thieves. You can turn this flashing LED on or off. The CD player comes supplied with a soft black fabric, draw string face case to protect the detachable face when you have it off the chassis. You must fold the face down before inserting or eject a disc.

AAC/MP3/WMA Playback: The KDC-MP3035 can play MP3, WMA and AAC files with ID3 tag information recorded on CD-ROM, CD-R, and CD-RW discs in ISO9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, Romeo and Long file name formats.

Supreme Setting: When MP3 or WMA files encoded at a low bit rate (less than 96 kbps, 44.1k, 48kHz) are played, the Supreme Setting function restores their high frequencies so the sound quality is closer to files encoded at a high bit rate. The processing is optimized for the compression format and the bit rate used. When the Supreme Setting is Off, the unit plays the original sound stored in the audio file.

Remote Control: The KDC-MP3035 comes with the RC-557 IR wireless remote control with a full numeric keypad. The remote will control Audio, CD, Tuner, Satellite and HD radio functions. It is powered by 2 "AA" batteries (supplied). The dimensions of the remote are: L = 5.359", W = 1.968", D = 1.105".

AUX Input: The KDC-MP3035 is equipped with a rear panel 3.5mm minijack auxiliary input for connecting external portable audio devices such as an MP3 player or Tape walkman. The receiver allows you to turn the Auxiliary input On our Off so you don't have to scroll through that source if you are not using it.

Auxiliary Display: The KDC-MP3035 allows you to select the source type displayed when using the auxiliary input. You can choose from AUX, DVD, Portable, Game, Video or TV.

3-Sets of Preamp Outputs: The KDC-MP3035 features front, rear and subwoofer preamp outputs. The Subwoofer preamp output can be turned On or Off and adjusted independently. The front and rear speaker preamp outputs are balance and fade adjustable. The subwoofer preamp output is non-fading. The front and rear preamp outputs are on 7.5" pigtail leads while the subwoofer output is fixed to the chassis.

Low Pass Filter: The receiver features a built-in Low Pass Filter control for the preamp-output when the Subwoofer Output is "on". You can select from 80, 120, 160 or off.

Subwoofer Level: Once you have switched the Subwoofer Output to "on" you can independently control the subwoofer preamp output level from the CD receiver. You select levels between -15 to +15.

Rotary Volume Control: The CD receiver uses a rotary volume control that increases and decreases the volume of the stereo from 0 to 35. The rotary knob also controls other audio settings such as Bass, Treble and preset EQ settings.

Attenuator: The CD receiver features an Attenuator button that turns the volume down very quickly with one touch of the button.

Speaker Settings: The Speaker Setting function tailors the System Q Sound Control settings according to the type of speakers in your vehicle. You may select a Speaker Setting of "SP Off" (flat), "SP OEM" (for OEM factory speaker systems), "SP 6x9/6" (for systems with 6" and 6"x9" speakers), or "SP 5/4" (for systems with 4" and 5" speakers).

Note: The Speaker Setting affects the bass, midrange, and treble values of the System Q presets. The speaker setting should be selected first.

System Q Sound Control: Six EQ curves are preset into memory, allowing you to recall the best preset EQ curve for different types of music. Each preset has its own level settings for bass (100Hz), midrange (1kHz), and treble (10kHz). The 6 preset curves with their respective bass, mid, and treble levels are as follows:

    • Rock: Bass +6, Mid +1, Treble +2
    • Pops: Bass +3, Mid +2, Treble +6
    • Easy: Bass +6, Mid 0, Treble -2
    • Top 40: Bass +3, Mid +1, Treble +8
    • Jazz: Bass +5, Mid +2, Treble +2
    • Natural (Flat): Bass 0, Mid 0, Treble 0

Note: The above values reflect the System Q settings when the Speaker Setting function is turned off. When the Speaker Settings are selected, the System Q level settings are different.

Bass/Treble/Mid Control: The KDC-MP3035 features independent Bass, Treble and Midrange control. You can adjust each one from -8 to +8db. The bass frequency is adjusted at 100 Hz, the treble frequency is adjusted at 10 kHz and the midrange frequency is adjusted at 1 kHz.

Bass Boost: The Kenwood CD receiver also features a Bass Boost control that can be set to the following levels - BB1, BB2 or Off.

Source Tone Memory: This feature allows you to store System Q bass, middle and treble tone settings for each source (CD, FM, AM and Aux).

Volume Offset: The level of each source may be independently adjusted to prevent radical leaps in output volume when switching from one source to another. The available settings range from -8 to 0.

CD Playback Options: The KDC-MP3035 offers the following CD and CD-changer playback features from the unit's face and the remote.

    • Face Playback Options:
      • Pause: stops play of your disc temporarily
      • Fast Forward/Rewind: allows you to fast forward or rewind within a track of a disc
      • Track/File Search: allows you to skip to the previous or next track/file on the disc

      • Disc Select: selects discs that are in the changer for playback
      • Repeat: repeats single track, file or folder on disc or an entire single disc in changer
      • Random: plays all the songs on the disc or all files within a folder in random order
      • Magazine Random: plays all the songs on all the discs in the disc changer in random order
      • Scan: plays the first part of each song or file on the disc you are listening to
    • Remote Control:
      • Pause: stops play of your disc temporarily
      • Fast Forward/Rewind: allows you to fast forward or rewind within a track of a disc
      • Track/File Search: allows you to skip to the previous or next track/file on the disc
      • Folder Select: selects folders on a MP3/WMA recorded disc
      • Direct Track/File Search: allows you to go directly to a track or file by using the remote's numerical keypad
      • Direct Disc Search: allows you to go directly to a disc by using the remote's numerical keypad

Text/Title Scroll: The KDC-MP3035 will display CD text, Audio file text and Satellite and HD radio text. You can turn the scrolling feature "on" to scroll longer titles across the screen.

Last Position Memory: If the unit is shut off or switched to the tuner mode while a CD is playing, the next time CD is selected as the source, playback will resume from the point where it left off.

Off Eject: The KDC-MP3035 allows you to eject your disc for 10 minutes after switching off the vehicles engine.

CD Force: When there is a problem with playing a CD with a special format, this setting plays the CD by force. Some CDs still may not play in the CD Force mode.

CR-2 Advanced Tuner: This unit uses Kenwood's CR-2 Advanced tuner for clear radio reception. You can choose one of three tuning modes: Auto 1 (seek tuning), Auto 2 (cycles through and tunes the selected band's preset stations only with each button press), or Manual.

Auto Memory Tuning: Not only does the CD receiver's tuner allow you manually enter your desired presets you can choose to have the unit automatically put stations with good reception in the memory banks automatically; this is a handy feature when traveling. The tuner features 3 FM banks (1, 2, 3) and 1 AM bank. You can store 6 presets for each AM/FM bank giving you a total of 18 FM presets and 6 AM presets.

Clean Reception System Circuit (CRSC): This circuit controls multi-path distortion by reducing stereo separation. As stereo separation is reduced, multi-path has less effect on the radio signal, improving reception in areas with tall buildings and mountains. The CRSC circuit can be turned on or off.

Receive Mode: If you choose to connect the optional HD tuner, the Receive Mode allows you to choose to receive analog or digital AM/FM broadcasts. You can choose from the following.

    • Auto: analog and digital broadcast will be received with the digital broadcast having priority
    • Digital: receives digital broadcasts only
    • Analog: receives analog broadcasts only

Tel Mute: The KDC-MP3035 features a cell-phone mute wire (brown) in its harness that when hooked up to your car's phone system mute wire will automatically mute the receiver's audio signal when a call comes in.

Beep Tone: The CD player features a touch sensor tone that beeps when you have selected a function of the unit. You can turn the beep tone ON or Off.

Security Code: You can enter a 4-digit security code which must be used when the unit is removed from the vehicle, or the constant power source is disconnected from the unit. When constant power is restored to the unit, the security code must be entered before the unit becomes operational.

FL Display: The unit features a large 14-segment Fluorescent display that uses a black background and blue characters that are easy to read.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: When the unit is in Standby mode, the face/button illumination is "keyed." In addition, while the unit is in Standby mode, you can turn the clock display on or off. When the Clock Display is turned on and the unit is in Standby mode, the Clock Display is also "keyed." Pressing and holding the source button turns the unit off completely.

Display Illumination Control: This function turns off the display when have not performed an operation for 5 seconds. This is effective for when you are driving at night.

Display Dimmer: The display has two brightness settings. You can change this setting within the menu.

Demo Mode: This unit features a Demo mode which can be turned "on" or "off" within the menu.

    External Device Controls

iPod Ready:This receiver is compatible with the optional Kenwood KCA-iP500 iPod control interface (item # 113IP500). When an iPod is connected to the interface, all of the iPod's controls will be disabled and it will be controlled from the receiver. With this interface, you'll be able to play your iPod music files through your Kenwood receiver and in most cases have all the titling information appear on the receiver's display.

Bluetooth Ready: The unit is also Bluetooth compatible using the optional Kenwood KCA-BT100 Bluetooth adapter. Using this adapter you can make and answer phone calls from the Kenwood headunit. You can even download your Phonebook information from your compatible mobile phone into the headunit. You are able to register up to five compatible Bluetooth cell phones when using the KCA-BT100 adapter.

HD Radio Ready: With an optional Kenwood HD Radio tuner (item # 113KTCHR20), you will be able to receive digital AM/FM broadcasts from local stations where available. This new technology will significantly improve audio quality and reception, as well as include information such as artist name and song titles or traffic news, viewable on the receiver's display.

Satellite Radio Ready: There are several options for connecting an optional XM or SIRIUS Satellite Radio receiver to this receiver:

    • XM Satellite Radio: To receive XM Satellite Radio, you can connect the optional CNP2000UC XM Mini Tuner and the CNP-KEN1 Kenwood adapter cable (package item number 700XMKEN1).
    • SIRIUS: To receive SIRIUS Satellite Radio, you can connect the optional SC-C1 SIRIUS Connect vehicle tuner (item number 607SCC1) and the Kenwood/SIRIUS adapter (item number 113KCASR50).
    • Dock: Select dock-and-play and portable SIRIUS radios can be controlled using the Kenwood/SIRIUS adapter (item number 113KCASR50) and the SC-VDOC1 dock (item number 607SVCDOC1).
    • Auxiliary Input: A portable satellite radio receiver, such as the Delphi SkyFi3 or SIRIUS Sportster, can be connected to the head unit via the auxiliary input (adapter may be required).

Note: A subscription is also required to receive satellite radio programming from SIRIUS or XM.

Changer Controls: This unit is directly compatible with Kenwood changers manufactured in 1998 or later. If the changer has an O-N switch, the switch will need to be set to the "N" position. In addition to basic disc navigation features, this unit has the following changer controls: direct disc access (using the remote), direct track access (using the remote), track intro scan, track repeat, disc repeat, disc random, and magazine disc random. When connected to a CD Text capable CD changer or an MD changer, this unit can display disc and track titles for discs encoded with disc and track title information. The text information can be scrolled manually or automatically.

Rear Auxiliary Input "Ready":  The unit already features a rear panel auxiliary input, but if you need a second auxiliary input, another one can be added to the rear of the unit. When used with an optional adapter, this unit can accept a rear input from an auxiliary source. When the CA-C1AUX adapter (item 113CAC1AX) is used, you cannot connect a CD changer to the head unit because the adapter plugs into the DIN changer control connection on the head unit. When the KCA-S220A 2-changer switch (item 113KCAS220) is used, you can connect a CD changer and an auxiliary audio source at the same time. When an auxiliary audio source is connected, you can choose from one of six names for the source: Aux Ext, TV, DVD, Video, Game, or Portable.
