Our take on the Kenwood KDC-MP635

Don't settle for eight characters of blocky song text on your stereo's display. Kenwood's KDC-MP635 CD receiver features a fluorescent display with three lines of text, so you can check out song info and system settings quickly. Animated screen savers and background images put the 64-color palette to good use. The Multi Control Wheel on the right side of the faceplate lets you make system adjustments or find the song you want quickly.

The strong built-in amp provides enough power to bring your music to life with full-bodied sound. The System Q Sound Control package includes the ability to match the stereo's output to the size of your car's speakers, along with high- and low-pass filters to keep the speakers from being overloaded with frequencies they can't handle. Fine-tune the highs, mids, and lows with a 3-band equalizer.

Add Kenwood's iPod® adapter if you want to control your iPod with the stereo, or add the optional auxiliary input to accommodate the music from any portable music player. If you want more power, three sets of preamp outputs stand ready for connecting external amplifiers. Kenwood's car performance computer can track G-forces during acceleration, braking, and cornering, and includes a stopwatch.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

    Lots of Features, but Complicated

    2001 Ford Mustang
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Looks like this item is no longer available on Crutchfield, but I'll throw in my 2 cents anyway. I bought this unit to install in my Mustang for use with a 30 GB iPod, so I could ditch the CDs. I returned it after 2 days. What was the problem? Well, it sounds great, and the graphics are kind of nifty (which is what sold me), but there were two big problems: One, the unit is incredibly complicated to operate, and two, the accessory Kenwood iPod control unit is very poorly designed. Trying to access settings on this unit is extremely unintuitive; you have to access certain menus in a certain order in a way that doesn't seem natural. Trying to do this while you're driving is extremely dangerous. Plus, the iPod cable does a terrible job of displaying playlist and song information on the screen. And if you can't see what playlist or song you're selecting, what's the point of even hooking up an iPod to your car system? It's almost as if Pioneer tried to make this unit as complex and hard to figure out as possible. On a friend's advice I ended up getting an Alpine CDA-9884 which is specifically designed for an iPod, and I am much happier with that one. It displays all KINDS of information, and the controls are much, much more intuitive and easy to access. Just my 2 cents' worth.

I recently purchased the Kenwood KDC-MP635 and I love it. Crutchfield gave me all the supplies and instructions I needed to install the unit myself and it was quite simple. The head unit works fantastic and I would recommend it to everyone. This is the first time I've purchased through Crutchfield because I was recommended by a friend and I'll now recommend it to everyone else interested in purchasing car audio.

    Wonderful System

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I brought this system to replace the factory system in my old 94 Aspire SE. It was simple to remove the old radio and install the new KENWOOD. This system is amazing, as it clearly is a huge step above the old factory. This system even dazzles my kids when I ride them in this car. From the graphic displays to the amazing sounds it pumps out. It really does a number on everyone in the vehicle. Love it . The only thing that you really need to know is whether you want to listen too HD radio or Satelitte radio. This system is adapt for both and that is a choice that you as a individual will have too make.

    Great system for the price.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this system to replace the factory one in my 93 Lincoln Continental and as the beginnings of a total car stereo makeover. It is a 100% improvement over the factory "premium" system. Despite what some of the previous reviews said, I had no problems with the supplied owners manual. Everything was pretty straight forward for me. The only downside to this radio are the small front panel buttons, but once it is programmed to your liking its not so bad. A good value.

Great reciever I'm impressed....great features and allot of expandability. I installed this in one of my friends trucks. works great!!! He is very happy. I have always had Pioneer, but after using this one a little I think I would buy a Kenwood now too. Really nice, do not be afraid to buy, you will like it!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Nice head unit - the 3-line display is key if you're going with a dedicated Sirius tuner. Pretty good sound. A little tricky to navigate through the menus, but you get used it. Don't really care about the graphics and other silly features like the "G-Force Display", but if that's you're thing, this unit's got all sorts of display choices.

    Great receiver

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great unit and great service from Crutchfield. If you can read and run a phillips screwdriver, you can install this yourself. Also bone up on soldering for a clean job. The only snag in the install in a 2000 CIVIC was getting the climate control harness back on the controler. Not a lot of slack in those wires! The instructions are a it confusing at first but you get the hang of it after a few days.

    Good radio for the money

Good radio for money, The buttons are very small and sometimes hard to use and the display is hard to see when the sun hits it.Good sound but if I could do over I would but an Alpine. They really need to change the buttons

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This reciever is great its installed in a 2003 impala and i really like the sound, very clean, very accurate. Lots of features maybe a little too many, the g-analyzer is cool but i would much rather have gone without that for a better equalizer or an easier to use system. The controls are definitley confusing and the manual is terrible BUT when you figure it out it really is simpler to use. Take the time in the driveway to figure it out though. Overall, Excellent reciever and a killer price. Crutchfield is king.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just received this deck today and after about 45 minutes of installation I am very pleased. The sound is great and the display is nice, although I wish it had more than 2 screen savers. The real test will be if I can see it in direct sunlight. I am very pleased in all the installation materials that Crutchfield included. If I had it installed at a store I might have gotten free installation but I would have had to pay $20-$30 dollars for extra parts. Way to go Crutchfield. My only grip is that it wasn't super clear that i would need wire crimper's to connect wires, which wasn't a big deal because the local hardware store had them cheap. Overall the deck is great, the price is great, and all the extras will have me coming back to Crutchfield in the future!!!

The KDC-MP635 is great! Menus were easy to navigate through and I was able to figure out most of the functions without reading the owners manual. Great sound and looks.

Ray from Virginia Beach, Va on 12/27/2007

This head unit is nice. My first kenwood unit and I don't see myself ever steering away from the brand. The control knob is tricky / confusing at first, as are the instructions, but w/i an hour or so, you'll be an expert. This unit is very adjustable and the controls are very convenient (again, once you play around w/ it). Would def. recommend this to friends. Did I mention how nice this unit looks in cars w/ dark interiors? Looks great!

    Great Kenwood Value

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is really a great receiver for the money. This is my first Kenwood head unit and I am happy with the features including the fine tuning of the music. I have the XM package as well as the Ipod adapter(I had to purchase a Kenwood switch) and they all integrate flawlessly. The 3-line display provides all of the information in a clear format especially when listening to XM and the Ipod. The single control knob is a little tricky at first but becomes second nature in no time. I am very satisfied with this Kenwood KDC-MP635.

This receiver Rocks.IT has great sound, and lots of different adjustments. It has different chooseable displays, and you can choose different text displays, at 3 different colors. The directions could be better written but after playing with it ,I found out how to do everything.Connected a CD Changer to it and it worked great, reads CD Text too. Well worth the money

I ended up purchasing this stereo because another unit was out of stock and WOW, what a great stereo. I am using stock speakers in my TC and it sounds 100% better than my stock stereo. I added the sirius and ipod units, they sound great. The 3 lines of text is awesome!! The controls will take a bit getting used to, but overall a great stereo with alot of great features!!

Graphic Motion Analyzer: This unit is equipped with a sensor that measures the forces of gravity on the vehicle. This sensor enables the receiver to calculate G-forces during acceleration, braking, and cornering. The G-Analyzer also has a stop watch that can be automatically started when forward or reverse G-forces are detected. Setup and calibration for acceleration and braking must be performed before using the G-Analyzer. The Graphic Motion Analyzer offers you 5 graphic displays to choose from: G-Graphic, G-Meter, G-Counter and Stop Watch, along with a HorsePower function that measures and records the max horse-power of your car. You can specify what type of vehicle you are driving to calibrate the G-Analyzer by selecting from the following choices - Mid Size, Full Size, SUV, Van, Pickup Truck, Sporty or Compact. The GMA's information can be viewed as numerical data or enhanced graphics on the head unit's display.

Note: The HP or G value measured by this unit may not be completely accurate due to its simplified method of measurement. The G-Analyzer is only for reference and should not be used to confirm the horsepower specifications of your vehicle.

AAC/MP3/WMA Playback: The KDC-MP635 can play MP3, WMA, WAV and AAC files with ID3 tag information recorded on CD-ROM, CD-R, and CD-RW discs in ISO9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, Romeo and Long file name formats.

Supreme Setting: When MP3 or WMA files encoded at a low bit rate (less than 96 kbps, 44.1k, 48kHz) are played, the Supreme Setting function restores their high frequencies so the sound quality is closer to files encoded at a high bit rate. The processing is optimized for the compression format and the bit rate used. When the Supreme Setting is Off, the unit plays the original sound stored in the audio file.

3-Sets of Preamp Outputs: The KDC-MP635 features front, rear and subwoofer preamp outputs. The Subwoofer preamp output can be turned On or Off and adjusted independently. The front and rear speaker preamp outputs are balance and fade adjustable. The subwoofer preamp output is non-fading. All the preamp outputs are attached to the chassis by a 7.5" pigtail.

Built-In Amp Setting: If you are using external amplifiers to power all of your vehicle's speakers you can turn the unit's built-in amplifier off to enhance the player's preamp output quality.

Front and Rear High-Pass Filter: The KDC-MP635 features an independent High-Pass Crossover for the front and rear channels. You can adjust the high-pass crossover from through, 80, 100, 120, 150, or 180Hz. The "Through" selection is a full-range setting. This feature is very helpful when you have smaller-type speakers in the front and larger-type speakers installed in the rear of the vehicle.

Low-Pass Filter: The receiver features a built-in Low Pass Filter control for the preamp-output when the Subwoofer Output is "on". You can select from 60, 80, 120Hz or Through. The "Through" setting allows your external amplifier's crossover network to do all the filtering for your subwoofer.

Subwoofer Level: Once you have switched the Subwoofer Output to "on" you can independently control the subwoofer preamp output level from the CD receiver. You select levels between -15 to +15.

Subwoofer Phase: You can adjust the phase of the subwoofer output between 180-degrees (Reverse) or 0-degrees (Normal).

Rotary Volume Control: The CD receiver uses a rotary volume control that increases and decreases the volume of the stereo from 0 to 35. The rotary knob also controls other audio settings such as Bass, Treble and preset EQ settings.

Multi-Control Wheel: The Kenwood receiver also features a Multi-Control Wheel, that when used with an iPod, lets you control all operations via a single control knob just as smoothly as the iPod's scroll wheel.

Attenuator: The CD receiver features an Attenuator button that turns the volume down very quickly with one touch of one button.

Speaker Settings: The Speaker Setting function tailors the System Q Sound Control settings according to the type of speakers in your vehicle. You may select a Speaker Setting of "SP Off" (flat), "SP OEM" (for OEM factory speaker systems), "SP 6x9/6" (for systems with 6" and 6"x9" speakers), or "SP 5/4" (for systems with 4" and 5" speakers).

Note: The Speaker Setting affects the bass, midrange, and treble values of the System Q presets. The speaker setting should be selected first.

System Q Sound Control: Six EQ curves are preset into memory, allowing you to recall the best preset EQ curve for different types of music. Each preset has its own level settings for bass (100Hz), midrange (1kHz), and treble (10kHz). The 6 preset curves with their respective bass, mid, and treble levels are as follows:

    • Rock: Bass +6, Mid +1, Treble +2
    • Pops: Bass +3, Mid +2, Treble +6
    • Easy: Bass +6, Mid 0, Treble -2
    • Top 40: Bass +3, Mid +1, Treble +8
    • Jazz: Bass +5, Mid +2, Treble +2
    • Natural (Flat): Bass 0, Mid 0, Treble 0

Note: The above values reflect the System Q settings when the Speaker Setting function is turned off. When the Speaker Settings are selected, the System Q level settings are different.

Bass/Treble/Mid Control: The KDC-MP635 features independent Bass, Treble and Midrange control. You can adjust each one from -8 to +8db. The bass frequency is adjusted at 100 Hz, the treble frequency is adjusted at 10 kHz and the midrange frequency is adjusted at 1 kHz.

Loudness: The Loudness feature compensates for low and high tones during low volume. You can turn this feature either on or off. Only the low tone is compensated for when the tuner is selected as a source.

Volume Offset: The level of each source may be independently adjusted to prevent radical leaps in output volume when switching from one source to another. The available settings range from -8 to 0 on all sources except on the auxiliary source which is -8 to +8.

Source Tone Memory: This feature allows you to store System Q bass, middle and treble tone settings for each source (CD, FM, AM and Aux).

Station/Disc Naming: The unit allows you to attach an 8-character title to a radio station or a CD. The unit can memorize up to 30 FM/AM station names and 10 CD names.

Text/Title Scroll: The KDC-MP635 will display CD text, Audio file text and Satellite and HD radio text. You can turn the scrolling feature "on" to scroll longer titles across the screen.

Last Position Memory: If the unit is shut off or switched to the tuner mode while a CD is playing, the next time CD is selected as the source, playback will resume from the point where it left off.

CD Force: When there is a problem with playing a CD with a special format, this setting plays the CD by force. Some CDs still may not play in the CD Force mode.

CR-2 Advanced Tuner: This unit uses Kenwood's CR-2 Advanced tuner for clear radio reception. You can choose one of three tuning modes: Auto 1 (seek tuning), Auto 2 (cycles through and tunes the selected band's preset stations only with each button press), or Manual.

Auto Memory Tuning: Not only does the CD receiver's tuner allow you manually enter your desired presets you can choose to have the unit automatically put stations with good reception in the memory banks automatically; this is a handy feature when traveling. The tuner features 3 FM banks (1, 2, 3) and 1 AM bank. You can store 6 presets for each AM/FM bank giving you a total of 18 FM presets and 6 AM presets.

Clean Reception System Circuit (CRSC): This circuit controls multi-path distortion by reducing stereo separation. As stereo separation is reduced, multi-path has less effect on the radio signal, improving reception in areas with tall buildings and mountains. The CRSC circuit can be turned on or off.

Dual Zone: The Dual Zone mode allows you to output the Main source and the Auxiliary source (using the optional CA-C1AX or CA-C2AX adapters) separately for the front and rear channels. You can select whether the auxiliary source will play in the front or the rear.

Tel Mute: The KDC-MP635 features a cell-phone mute wire (brown) in its harness that when hooked up to your car's phone system mute wire will automatically mute the receiver's audio signal when a call comes in.

Beep Tone: The CD player features a touch sensor tone that beeps when you have selected a function of the unit. You can turn the beep tone ON or Off.

Security Code: You can enter a 4-digit security code which must be used when the unit is removed from the vehicle, or the constant power source is disconnected from the unit. When constant power is restored to the unit, the security code must be entered before the unit becomes operational.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: When the unit is in Standby mode, the face/button illumination is "keyed." In addition, while the unit is in Standby mode, you can turn the clock display on or off. When the Clock Display is turned on and the unit is in Standby mode, the Clock Display is also "keyed." Pressing and holding the source button turns the unit off completely.

Display Illumination Control: This function turns off the display when have not performed an operation for 5 seconds. This is effective for when you are driving at night.

Dimmer: The dimmer function will dim this unit's display automatically when the vehicle light switch is turned On when you connect orange/white Illumination wire of this player.

Remote Control: The KDC-MP635 comes with the RC-547 IR wireless remote control with a full numeric keypad. The remote will control Audio, CD, Tuner, Satellite, HD radio and Dual Zone functions. It is powered by 2 "AA" batteries (supplied). The dimensions of the remote are: L = 5.362", W = 1.962", D = 1.11

    External Device Controls

Bluetooth Ready: The unit is also Bluetooth compatible using the optional Kenwood KCA-BT200 Bluetooth adapter. Using this adapter you can make and answer phone calls from the Kenwood headunit. You can even download your Phonebook information from your compatible mobile phone into the headunit. You are able to register up to five compatible Bluetooth cell phones when using the KCA-BT200 adapter.

iPod Adapter Compatible: Using the KCA-iP500 iPod Control Interface, you can connect your Apple iPod digital music player to this receiver. The interface (item number 113IP500) plugs into the receiver's 13-pin CD changer input and controls the iPod through the receiver's controls, as well as displays the iPod's text information right on the receiver's display.

HD Radio Ready: With an optional Kenwood HD Radio tuner (item # 113KTCHR20), you will be able to receive digital AM/FM broadcasts from local stations where available. This new technology will significantly improve audio quality and reception, as well as include information such as artist name and song titles or traffic news, viewable on the receiver's display.

    • XM Satellite Radio: To receive XM Satellite Radio, you can connect the optional CNP2000UC XM Mini Tuner and the CNP-KEN1 Kenwood adapter cable (package item number 700XMKEN1).
    • SIRIUS: To receive SIRIUS Satellite Radio, you can connect the optional SC-C1 SiriusConnect vehicle tuner (item number 607SCC1) and the Kenwood/SIRIUS adapter (item number 113KCASR50).
    • Dock: Select dock-and-play and portable SIRIUS radios can be controlled using the Kenwood/SIRIUS adapter (item number 113KCASR50) and the SC-VDOC1 dock (item number 607SCVDOC1).
    • Auxiliary Input: A portable satellite radio receiver, such as the Delphi SkyFi3 or SIRIUS Sportster, can be connected to the head unit via the auxiliary input (adapter may be required).

Note: A subscription is also required to receive satellite radio programming from SIRIUS or XM.

When the CA-C1AUX adapter (item 113CAC1AX) is used, you cannot connect a CD changer to the head unit because the adapter plugs into the DIN changer control connection on the head unit. When the KCA-S220A 2-changer switch (item 113KCAS220) is used, you can connect a CD changer and an auxiliary audio source at the same time. When an auxiliary audio source is connected, you can choose from one of six names for the source: Aux Ext, TV, DVD, Video, Game, or Portable.
