Overview

Our take on the Kenwood KFC-W3009

Kenwood's "typhoon" subwoofers definitely whip up some great bass. Overlapping ribs in the pearl mica-injected polypropylene cone provide incredible stiffness, so the cone won't buckle when you get down to serious lows. The KFC-W3009 12" subwoofer also has a high-roll surround with a flat edge for added durability. A double-stacked magnet and four-layer voice coil handle plenty of power.

This sub won't bottom out when you drive it hard, thanks to its vented, extended pole piece. Plus, the red metallic center emblem adds some color to go with those pounding lows. The efficient KFC-W3009 is designed for use in sealed or ported enclosures.

Not bad.

Kyle from Wichita, KS on 3/28/2006

Not bad subs. I bought two of these and I'm pushing 320 watts @ 4ohms to each sub. It's hits pretty nice, They sound very clean and can handle a lot of bass. If you're not going for dual voice coil subs, this is the way to go.

Cons:

Pretty Nice Sub!

Tallen from Swainsboro, G.A. on 2/15/2006

very clean nice sub.i have 2 of these things hooked to a 1600 watt pyramid mosfet amp in stereo mode.they are only getting 75 watts rms a sub,but when they drop and peak at 1600 watts they hit hard. These things had to be put on a cap because of my headlights kept dimming. They kept my Grandad coming out of his house about 2 houses down telling me to turn it down,he say it's just too much noise. About 3 days from now they will be sat up on a 1600 watt audiobahn A8000T,running @ 2ohms pushing 800 watts rms.

Ground Pounding Bass!

Timothy from Bonfield, IL on 2/2/2006

I have 4 of these Kenwoods powered by a directed D2400 amp. These subs hit so hard my cd player skips a beat now and then. These subs are the best budget subs out there! They take a pounding and keep begging for more. In the 4 months I've had them, these subs have beaten my every expectation. Why spend twice as much on any other sub in the power range, when these subs blow away the competition!

I have two of these in 12 in hooked up to a Profile AP1000M putting out 250W RMS to each sub The amp is run from a Alpine CDA-9847. I have the bass set on 2 out of 10 and the bass boost remote for the amp on zero. At 20vol out of 35vol they start to destort. They are ok at first but i wolud spent a little more money and get something better. Even going with one Alpine R would be better the two of these kenwoods. Do your self a and do it right the first time!!

Freakin' hell!

Recently, I bought my first "real" car stereo. The Rockford Punch series 1 stuff I bought was just not doing it for me, so the place where I bought the amp and subs let me switch the rockford stuff out for some Kenwood stuff. I am soo glad I did, because these two 12's I've got working with the Kenwood 9102D amp I have make me never want to get up outa my Jeep. They're just that damn good! :o)

These subs are definatly worth the price tag, or even more! i have 2 of these hooked up in the back of my MINI being run by a mono 1000W excelon amp. since they're in a type 1 box, the bass will go right through you and make heads turn!

Cons:

Alright Budget Subs

Raul from Chatsworth, GA on 9/20/2005

I have this sub hooked up to a Rockford Fosgate 201S. The lab tested RMS is 283 and I have it turned 3/4 of the way cuz the sub distorts too much and it sounds to muddy. It is an alright if sub if you are a rookie to car audio, but for the price I would recommend you buy the Alpine type E for 90 bucks.

Cons:

OK For the money

cj from Traverse City, MI on 9/14/2005

there are some good reviews on this but these are not as good as everyone says. they are great for someone looking for a 1st system with a good amp but if you are looking for a good sub that will show up anyone in your town then go with a higher grade rockford frosgate such as a Punch stage 3 or a Power stage 1 or 2. withthese you just need an amp that will support it. also, when my brother got his pair of these 12's, one came with ripped foam and it took a while to get another. this is good for a beginner system that wants a little rattle tho.

Overall I like these subs and recommend them to anyone that is on a budget for their sound system. Keep in mind that these are good subs if YOU ARE ON A BUDGET. These subs sound pretty good, and Kenwood is known for sound quality over bass. If you are looking for the meanest bump in town; you need to find another sub. I am very pleased and gave this sub a 4 star rating because there are better out there, but not for the price.

You know when i first saw these for sale around chirstmas time and i saw 2 for 1 i thought WOW. i want those and so my parents got them for me. I am more than happy with these. I have two of them in a custom box powered by a Sony 2200gtx 1200W amp and they pound like heck even though they are only at half of their Max power. each sub gets 400W max and im looking to upgrade my amp so that i can get 600-700W to each of them and make them pound even harder, i cant wait but these subs are great. I out-pound most people round here with these subs, they cant believe how cheap i got them. its great definately a good buy

Compared to what I used to have, these "woods" are gold. You can't go wrong on a budget with these "woods". Teamed with the right amp, classic and hard rock never sounded so good. Two is good, but four on the floor is even better. Thanks for the great two-for Crutchfield!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I love to listen to music in all styles. I like hip hop, rap, rock (80's, classic etc..), techno, trance, bass, new age, alternative, metal etc.. Yes i am one of those people that really listens to everything. I have designed my car audio system to do everything well with a multi amp setup and capacitors in the front amp and subwoofer amp to improve response. My speakers are all infinity. I needed a system to have bass that's true, tight and NOT muddy. Bass that would be tuned to go with any musical style. Bass that can shake the car silly or be civilised and cultivated to liven the musical experience of something like Pink Floyd. These Kenwood Subs deliver the necessary punch. They're tight, responsive and do everything well. I like their freqency response range. This was a good buy and the best overall subs I've had to date. They're powered by a 600watt amp and a 1 farrat cap. Highly recommended to those wanting subs that do everything well, If you're an audiophile that's not on an unlimited budget you'll be hard pressed to find something that SOUNDS better.

Features

Woofer: The cone is constructed of pearl mica injection-molded polypropylene. Uniform pearl mica crystals form an overlapping structure that adds strength and heat resistance to polypropylene; the result is reduced distortion and improved reliability.

Tornado Woofer Cone: The cone is formed with three raised ridges around the circumference of the cone. The width of each ridge is graduated, making a tornado-like appearance. The ridges make the Tornado Cone much more rigid than conventional cones, with resonance frequencies that are more than an octave higher. Additionally, the Tornado Cone's resonance is of a more random nature than those of conventional cones, which reduces their intensity. Since the resonance frequencies are lower in amplitude and far above the woofer's useable frequency range, they are much less audible, resulting in clearer, more detailed bass sound.

Surround Material: The urethane foam surround has very high internal loss, which reduces speaker cone distortion.

Extended Pole Piece: The pole piece has been extended to provide a more linear magnetic field for woofer operation. This lowers distortion and provides the woofer with better low frequency response.

Vented Pole Piece: The vented pole piece allows air to circulate in the voice coil gap; air circulating in the voice coil gap helps dissipate heat and results in greater power handling and increased reliability.

Gold-plated Speaker Terminals: This sub allows you to connect the speaker wire using quick-slide connectors or spade connectors. The width of the slide terminals are 0.187". To use the spade connectors, there are screw terminals with a maximum of 0.388".

Enclosure Compatibility

Recommended Sealed Box Volume: The sealed box sizes recommended by Kenwood range from 0.8 cu/ft to 1.5 cu/ft. Within this range, the ideal size recommended by Kenwood is 1.0 cu/ft, so this is the enclosure recommended by Crutchfield.

Recommended Vented Box Volume: The vented box sizes recommended by Kenwood range from 1.0 cu/ft to 2.0 cu/ft. Within this range, the ideal size recommended by Kenwood is 1.5 cu/ft, so this is the enclosure recommended by Crutchfield. One 3" diameter x 7" long port should be used with a 1.5 cu/ft enclosure.

Power Handling: Although the specifications section of the manual lists two power handling specifications, "RMS Power Handling" and "Peak Power Handling", Kenwood has established "Rated", "Maximum" and "Peak" input power ratings for this woofer. The "Rated" input power spec is equivalent to the "RMS Power Handling" spec listed in the manual, the "Maximum" input power rating is a continuous power handling specification, and the "Peak" input power rating is equal to the "Peak Power Handling" spec listed in the manual. The power ratings are as follows:

  • "Rated" input power: 200 watts
  • "Maximum" continuous input power: 400 watts
  • "Peak" input power: 800 watts
