Car amps have come a long way. Kenwood's Excelon XR900-5 car amplifier can power your entire audio system while taking up an astonishingly small amount of space — it's about the size of a piece of computer paper, and it stands only 2" tall. But this compact 5-channel workhorse will send 60 watts RMS to each of your front and rear speakers, along with up to 600 watts RMS to your subs. You could also use the XR900-5 in 3-channel mode to drive a pair of high-performance speakers or components with 150 watts RMS each, while still feeding 600 watts RMS to your sub.
Kenwood packed this amp with space-saving features. Class D technology reduces the size of the power supply, while the internal heatsink is tilted to reduce height without compromising the amp's cooling system. Recessed power and speaker wire terminals help to further reduce the amp's footprint, protect the connections, and give your installation a neat, professional look.
You can contour the sound with high- and low-pass filters so your full-range speakers play efficiently and sound their best. The front and rear channels have separate gain and filter controls so you can adjust for different types of speakers. The subwoofer channel features its own low-pass filter that'll send the correct frequencies to your sub and enclosure, with an adjustable bass boost that adds some low-end punch when you want it.

Kick ass power. My JL amp couldn't power my JL sub to its peak!! This Kenwood amp is showing me the true power of my JL sub. I'm blown away.

It gives clean balanced power to my infinity speaker setup with dual 12 inch sound ordinance subs. Finding where to put the power cable through the fire wall and fishing speaker wires through that accordion looking thing on the door were the hardest parts. Actually the pain in my ears tells me it goes louder than I should probably listen.
Pros: Clean sound, plus I got it on scratch and dent for an incredible price.
This is a very good compact amp to run fronts, rears, and sub. Would have been 5 stars if it had a remote bass adjustment.

I was totally blower away of the power...
I power Focal Flax Experts in the doors and Focal K2' s (bridged) in the rear and a 8"JL W7 with this amp. And with my setup in my 350z you can barely stay in the car with it cranked up. This amp never over heats or goes to protect and I run it hard for long periods of time. Great amp! I now own 2 of them now!!
Savage amp. Powering 4 kenwood 709ps components in the doors that absolutely scream crystal clear at only 1/2 gain. Buyer beware had it powering one kenwood 3016ps subwoofer and the sub couldn't handle the power. Blew it at only half gain and half bass boost. But it all sounded epic together while it lasted 3 days lol. Maybe my fault I probably cranked it too loud that night b4 the "break-in period" but Jesus did it sound epic. Never got too hot pushing everything either! Have a stronger pioneer w3003d4 sub on the way! Can't wait. Just playing 4 doors for now and it's so crystal clear and loud. Can only turn car volume to 20 out of 33 b4 it hurts.

I installed this in by 2002 Avalanche it is powering 4 kenwood speakers and a sub. After working with it for a while I finally got it tuned in and I must say his amp is very good and is really clear. It was easy to install but just took me a while to get just right but well worth it sounds great!!

When I began looking for an amplifier to run components and in the future a subwoofer in my full-size truck, I decided that a 5-channel amp would be the easiest to install and leave the smallest footprint. As I started narrowing it down, this Kenwood XR900-5 seemed perfect for my needs. It's been a great little amp so far. I haven't connected a sub to it, but it pushes plenty of clean power to my Pioneer components. I'm impressed with how small of an amp it actually is. That provides a lot of flexibility in where you mount it. I've always had great success with Kenwood eXcelon products and will continue to use them.

This 5 channel amp is rock solid. I've been using it for many, many months and it pushes exactly the right amount of power I need to make my system bump. I was worried 600w wouldn't be enough, but my Crutchfield advisor was exactly right when he said it's all I would need for a single 10" and the space I had in my SUV.
Pros: Gets warm, but doesn't overheat. Compact. Stylish. Easy to read labeling and clear, easy-access jacks.
Cons: Gets a little warm with extended use, but never overheats.
So, I was looking for a five channel amp that allowed me to send 600 watts to my sub's while also having between 60 and 75 watts to the rest of my speakers. This amp worked great. The 600 watts is more then enough for my two kicker 10's. I leave the bass boost at 6 and it provides plenty of thump for my F350. The 75 watts going to the other four channels is just enough to allow my speakers to hit high volumes without distorting. Overall a great amp.

Best amp I have ever owned. This is the second ZR900-5 amp that i have purchased refurbished. The first one went into my girlfriends mustang powering Infinity kappas 2ohms front and rear and an Alpine type R 12 inch at 2ohms. It provides more than enough power to her entire system. I liked the amp so much that I got rid of my JL Audio XD500-3 and purchased another Kenwood amp for myself. The fan keeps it running cool, and bass boost is just ridiculously loud. The entire headliner shakes like a rattle snakes tail. lol. Never had any issue at all with this amp even being factory refurbished. Go get one. Price and performance cant be beat.

This is the best amp I have purchased and is powerful. I love the small compact size of this amp, because my car is not that big and wanted to keep the extra space in my car. Handles all of my aftermarket speakers and subwoofer with no problem at all.

I bought it refurbished and it came not working. I have bought refurbished from Crutchfield before and everything was fine. Customer service is always great. They took it back and refunded my money no questions asked.

I ordered a refurbished unit thinking that they would have been gone through from the factory and in working condition. I got amplifier and had my install scheduled. Once truck was dismantled, they realized that amp had bad connectors on it. So did rest of install and thought the fix would be simple for Crutchfield. I was told they no longer carry the amp and I would have to deal with Kenwood. I called Kenwood and they sent me over to the authorized repair company. They told me I had to pay for shipping $25 and they would turn it around in two days. A week and a half later, I called and they said the board needed replaced and would be 2 1/2 months to get it. After much conversation, they agreed to see if they could just send me new refurbished unit. Called today and they are saying it may be a couple of weeks before they send it out from some other location! Sorry to say this has been a very bad experience. My install remains half done as I wait for the amplifier. Dissapointed in the whole process and additional expense that I'm incurring for a unit that was shipped to me bad. Doesn't seem right.

this amp put out good consistent rms power, along with being able to adjust the levels on there as well and the built in fan to help with cooling is a added bonus as well. im no install expert like some on herer, but I like the quality that kenwood offers.

Excellent amp works nice for my truck setup. I ran a single 10" alpine custom build sub box, on the high end I running 4 6x8 infinity's. So far I am impressed with the performance of this amp, it is putting out great power.

This thing has power to spare!
This little amp is small yet so powerful. Installed in a Honda Civic 2007 LX sedan, mounted on a sub. No bigger than a sheet of computer paper and just a couple inches tall. It packs quite a punch for something so small. No hisses or pops or any kind of audible signature of its own. Powered up and listening to a variety of genres, music is crystal clear. Have it powering 2 pairs of Infinity Kappa 62.11i and a Kicker 40DCWS102 subwoofer so RMS ratings are matched perfectly. At 3/4 volume, my car rumbles (not the annoying rattles) and music from the entire range is clear. Completely happy with this purchase.
Pros: No audible signature on its own (no hisses, pops, distortions). Compact Cooling fan can keep up Powerful for its size Brushed black aluminum chassis makes it look sleek
Cons: Not a major one but I wish it had a cover plate for the control knobs for gains etc. just like the screws for the wires. It would look more "neater" and have a cleaner looking profile.
Have it pushing my sub and speakers. Small so it's good for my use in truck.
I purchase this amp because it was on sale and also because it has a very small footprint since I will be installing in my GMC Sierra. Crutchfield shipped it extremely fast. I've not installed it yet but I know I'll be happy with it. All and all, I'm a very satisfied customer and will be making future purchases here.

Wanted a single amp to power all the door speakers and subs in my 2013 gmc sierra crew. This nice little amp has lots of power for its size and is small enough to be mounted anywhere. Amp is power 6.5 alpine componants in the front doors and alpine 6.5 in the rear doors. The sub channel is powering 2 jl audio 10" w0 subs. Very clean sound and plenty of power on tap. The single amp made for a simple and clean install.

This Kenwood replaced a JL Audio XD600 that developed intermittent issues with channel 1. So far it works just fine. Visually though, the Kenwood's physical construction is a bit underwhelming. The top is solid aluminum but the rest is sheet metal. The XD600 felt hefty through out in contrast. The Kenwood does depend on fan cooling & this probably allowed for the cheaper construction.... but still... I am glad I bought the refurbished model; if I paid the "new" price, I think I'd have been quite disappointed.

Cons: Low budget construction... appears to be "less" than other older Kenwood Amps I've owned. Unit does run hot... hope the fan lasts a long time.

Product arrived with one of the posts bent from factory (it happens). Crutchfield expressed me a new one immediately and the product works great.
Pros: Clean sound with great controls and form factor
The sub channel of this amplifier, despite the similar amplification rating, does not produce the bass impact as does an Alpine PDX-M6, Kenwood XR-1S, or even the sub channel from a Kenwood XR-5s. My bass is muddy/not tight in comparison. I set gains with the SMD DD-1 on all amplifiers and the test was a direct A/B comparison when I had all of these amplifiers from previous systems. This was my experience.

I HAVE THE FRONT AND REAR CHANNELS BRIDGED ON 1 SET OF Kenwood Excelon KFC-XP184C7" components AND THE SUB CHANNEL PUSHING 1 Kicker 40CWRT101CompRT shallow-mount 10" subwoofer with dual 1-ohm voice coil. This amp provides more than enough power for my '72 Chevy c10..... dynamat will be my next investment....!

This is a sweet amp. Class D digital with a very small form factor. Fits under the seat perfectly in my Fusion. My unit is powering a pair of 10 inch subs, a pair 6x8 components and a pair of 6x8 4-ways. It really sounds good, I couldn't be happier.

CEA-2006 Compliant: CEA-2006 is a system of testing and measurement methods for mobile audio amplifiers. This voluntary standard advocates a uniform method for measuring an amplifier's RMS power output and signal-to-noise ratio. The criteria for measuring power uses a DC input voltage of 14.4 volts and the RMS power output is measured into a 4-ohm load, with 1% or less Total Harmonic Distortion plus noise (THD+N), and over a frequency range of 20 Hz to 20 kHz, when applicable. Signal-to-Noise ratio is measured in weighted absolute decibels (dBA) at a reference of 1 watt into 4 ohms. CEA-2006 allows consumers to compare car amplifiers and receivers on an equal basis. Using CEA-2006 criteria, the Kenwood XR900-5 is rated at 60 watts RMS x 4 plus 400 watts RMS x 1 (subwoofer) with a 78 dBA signal to noise ratio.
Specifications: The manual also lists these non CEA-2006 compliant specifications:
Class D Amplifier Design: The amplifier design is Class D, which uses digital switching power supplies. The result is much higher efficiency (less heat generated) than Class AB.
5-Channel Design: The XR900-5 is made up of three sections, two full range stereo amps (labeled A and B, typically used to power front and rear speakers) and a subwoofer amp (1-channel). The front and rear amps are independently bridgeable, meaning the XR900-5 can be used as a 5-channel, 4-channel, or 3-channel amp. The minimum impedance for each section is 2Ω, 4Ω when bridged.
Crossovers: The front, rear, and subwoofer amplifier sections have independent crossover controls. The front and rear crossovers can be set to high-pass or turned off (full range). The subwoofer crossover is low-pass only and cannot be bypassed. The crossover point for each is continuously variable from 50 to 200 Hz. The high-pass crossover slope is 12dB per octave and the low-pass crossover slope is 24dB per octave.
Bass Boost: The bass boost circuit for the subwoofer section is centered at 40 Hz; boost is variable from 0 to +18 dB.
Aluminum Heat Sink: The aluminum heat sink increases the amplifier's heat dissipation efficiency, increasing the life of the amplifier.

You'll need a voltmeter to measure the output from the amplifier. Start at zero gain on the amplifier and connect the voltmeter. As you turn up the gain on the amplifier the voltage output should increase, which will be indicated the display on your voltmeter. I hope this helps! [ christopher Oct 10, 2016 ]
I used a multi-meter to set each pair's settings. I downloaded test tones of 50 Hz and 1000 Hz recorded at 0dB and by using one of Ohm's Law's formulas, finding voltage given watts and resistance. That is, voltage is the square root of watts multiplied by ohms, or V = sq.rt (W x R). The 1000 Hz tone is played for sets A and B, 50 Hz for the subwoofer set. Assuming 2 ohms across all channels, sets A and B will come out to 12.25 volts and subwoofer set will be 34.64 volts. At 4 ohms across all channels, it's 17.32 volts for A and B, and 49 volts for the sub set. It might sound like a lot, but that's at the maximum un-distorted volume from your head unit. On my setup, all my gains are at the 0.5 setting and have been that way for 2 years. My setup includes Kenwood Excelon x-798 stereo, 2 pairs of Infinity Kappa 62.11i, Kicker 40DCWS102 subwoofer. RMS watts matching all across and everything at 2 ohms. [ Mark David Oct 07, 2016 ]
If I remember correctly I was told I needed a 125 amp fuse by customer service. I had trouble finding one and after talking to some people I knew with install experience they claimed a 100 amp breaker would be fine. Well 6 months later the 100 amp breaker is just fine. You run the front and rears off the front and rear channel , that will give you 70w x 4 @ 4ohms. The sub channel is separate and you just need to hook up the sub to that channel and w @ 2 ohm sub it will pull 600w. It's pretty simple make sure you set your crossovers. And rember you won't get all the power unless u turn the gains all the way up. You should set your gains at .5 for and your crossovers at 80hz. Yes. If I remember the installation correctly I did this on my son's Porsche install with 4 Ohm subs in the doors wired in parallel for 2 ohm to the sub channel output, and 4 ohm speakers for the LR and Rear speakers. The channel gain controls allows level matching on the channels. As long as the amp is capable and stable at the lowest load ( 2Ohm in this case) the other channels are fine at higher impedance. I have my four speakers at 4 ohms (just wire each speaker individually to the speaker outputs on the amp) to get the subs at 2 ohms there is a wiring diagram here on the website that will help with that. But yes 4 ohms to the mains and 2 ohms to the subs is possible. And the power is great. I am pushing two ten inch subs and the sound is clean and the subs hit hard. [ William Feb 05, 2016 ]
