Overview

This vehicle-specific wiring harness makes connections between your new car stereo and your car's electrical system.

Metra 70-1721 Receiver Wiring Harness

This vehicle-specific wiring harness makes connections between your new car stereo and your car's electrical system.

First, attach the color-coded wires on your Crutchfield-supplied harness to the wires from your new stereo. If you're not using a soldering iron, we recommend that you purchase some wire connectors to secure the connections. Check out our handy article on three ways to connect the wiring harness here.

Now, once this harness is connected to your new stereo, you'll be able to plug right into your car's factory radio connector. This harness saves installation time since you won't have to cut factory wires individually, and this also enables you to re-install the factory radio if needed. A detailed instruction sheet comes with the harness. Warranty: 60 days.

Please read this important note: This harness may not contain provisions for every wire needed to complete your installation, and it will not accommodate special navigation, video, or factory steering wheel control connections. You will need a special adapter if you want your factory steering wheel audio controls to work with your new stereo.

Note: Most vehicles will require additional installation parts — please identify your vehicle if you haven’t done so. You can also call an Advisor for more information.

All the wires you need. And they even matched the color code on the Radio.

So, it honestly looks like a mess when you get it. HAVE NO FEAR! It is already pre-stripped and ready to be connected to your aftermarket radio harness! (If your radio harness is pre-stripped as well... LOVE how it lets you know what color goes to what option on the packaging. If you're colorblind or just straight lazy, each individual wire is already labeled also! worked perfectly with my radio and vehicle.

Pros: pre-stripped wires each individual wire is clearly labeled! it works!

Cons: none!

Fits and functions just fine but I had to give it 3 stars because the signal wire for the steering wheel controls is absent. I ended up buying a second harness to get the extra wire to add to the harness installed in my car so I wouldn't have to cut or splice any of the original wiring in the car. With steering wheel controls being so common it's a strange omission.

Pros: All wires are printed with their function (e.g. Front Left +). Colors matched up to the harness that came with my Kenwood head unit.

Cons: Steering wheel control signal wire (Pin 3) not populated.

Used it to install a Kenwood KMM-BT515HD into a 2000 Honda CRV and it worked very well. The wire colors were the same as on the Kenwood unit. The wires on the harness were pre-striped. The function of each of the wires in the harness is listed on the package. All I had to do is connect the corresponding wires on the Kenwood unit and it plugged right into the connector in the Honda. It only took about 15 minutes to connect the wires.

I installed more than a few car stereos over the years and a wiring harness always makes the job easier. Just wire the harness that goes to the stereo to the harness that clips into the factory hookup and you're done. I recommend using the proper tools and end caps on all your connections. Also don't forget to disconnect the negative terminal on your battery unless you want to fry something.

Pros: Simple as matching the color coded wires. Simple click install after that.

Essential (at least for me). Made wiring painless and foolproof. Along with the Posi-Products wire connectors, the arduous task of wiring was made simple and practically foolproof for those of us who are overwhelmed already with multiple colored wires going to the right places. The receiver harness meant solid correct connections the first time. Appreciated Crutchfield supplying the harness with a radio purchase. Nothing worse than trying to figure out what parts you need to install anything., that is why I turned to Crutchfield for my auto radio purchase.

Cons: You do have to connect it yourself. This might be a pro, if you enjoy this, or con if you don't!

This wiring harness was invaluable in the install of my new JVC Arsenal KW-R925BTS auto stereo. The harness took all the guesswork of having to find which wire did what in the factory harness, just a simple connect to the new radio harness and plug in. No having to cut wires to splice into the cars factory wiring.

Pros: Made the hookup almost as simple as plug and play.

Fit perfectly with my Honda. However, it would be nice if they included the wires that are necessary for the steering wheel control. Since they do not include the two wires which are needed for this application and are on the Honda side of the harness, you must cut two factory wires and splice them to the steering wheel controller instead of simply splicing them to this after-market harness. If you ever wanted to use your factory radio again, you would have connect the honda wires back together first, which would not be ideal.

Pros: Fits, pre-stripped

Cons: does not include steering wheel control wires

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall this harness is fine, but be forewarned, it is not fully populated with all of the Honda connections. When I went to put a new radio in my wife's Odyssey, I discovered Metro left out the steering wheel control (red/green, pin 3) wire. This isn't exactly an obscure function, so I can't believe they left it out. Fortunately I was able to re-purpose another wire the Metro harness did populate but my vehicle did not. (You can release the wire from the connector housing with a pin-like tool and move it to another position.) Otherwise there were no problems with fit or any other aspect of the harness.

Pros: Fit was perfect.

Cons: Not every wire is there so it may not work out of the package and you may have to make adjustments.

Only thing that would make this easier is if it came with the parts to splice with the other wires. I had a hard time and never found crimp caps, and settled with butt splice crimps. Fortunately, my son had a crimp tool, but was also given the wrong number of crimps needed for my vehicle by customer service and the wrong size. Not a big deal as I bought extra crimp connectors to be safe and went online to figure out the correct size butt splice crimps for the job.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This Metra 70-1721 harness got used to connect a Sony MEX-N6000B single-DIN stereo to the wiring harness of a 2000 Honda Insight hybrid. The fantastic thing is that when soldering this connector to the Sony connector to create the adapter harness, every color wire on one connector matched directly every color wire on the other connector, so making the harness was a SNAP - just matched all the colors (AFTER checking the docs to make sure!) and it worked great first time! I don't use crimp connectors, I solder my harnesses and use shrink-wrap to insulate the connection, so this is more of a concern for me because it takes longer to solder rather than use crimp connectors, but the results are worth it - I cover my harnesses in plastic split wire covers and they perform great and look totally professional. I could not achieve this result with out the Metra connector!

Pros: Good quality plastics, matching the OEM product in color and performance. Good conductors in the connector hood, and all the wires are securely connected. Wires are pre-stripped and I did not have to strip them again to get more copper exposure. Great value for the price!

Cons: None. i would not do this job without this connector.

This connector mated up well with the factory harness and made the install a breeze. I was able to do all the connections at the kitchen table and not with wires hanging out of the dash. For the price (included) it was a great product that made the install work very well, and I've been replacing car radios since 1988.

Pros: Connections work good product plug and play

DO Call tech support to figure out the orange wire mystery... Almost bad enough to defeat the purpose of the harness and the instructions to have a wire that is there but not illustrated and named things that do not match the names in the radio install instructions.

Pros: Snaps in fine to the car's connector Good length of wires Good quality insulation (strong colors, easy to make sense of)

Cons: Illustration does not match regarding orange orange/white pair. Needs to be sorted out.

Works flawlessly, as described. However, I did attempt a splice-out for the steering wheel controls after looking at the wiring diagram for my Odyssey. I saw that the harness did not account for the steering wheel control, but my receiver actually did. Naturally, I attempted to splice around the harness. Despite the effort, my steering wheel controls do not operate. I do still love the after market stereo, though!

Loved the product, was able to wire up the entire head unit install on the bench. It's been years since I've installed a radio in the car, this makes the whole process a breexe.

Pros: Good instructions, colorcodes matched well, and included diagram was spot on.

Cons: The only complaint I have is with Crutchfield's downloadable installation instructions, Crutchfield asked for my make year and model of automobile and also knew my head unit required a backup conx., and a parking brake conx. I spent a couple hours trying to find these, finally gave up and called tech support, and they have the answer straight away, should have been on the instruction sheet.

Was a little daunted by doing it myself, mostly cause the wires from the Clarion unit weren't all uniform, so i wasn't sure if I was doing it right, but it really is just straight color to color wiring with some crimp clamps with trimming of the Clarion wires. Working well so far. I'm happy.

Pros: Simple color to color.

This harness adapter made it so easy to connect my aftermarket radio in my son's car. With today's cars wiring systems being so confusing, it was a relief that I didn't have to cut into the car's wiring harness. Simply follow the clear diagram supplied and it was done fast. Not only did I receive diagrams and instructions with the item, but Crutchfield supplied them with the email notifying me of the items' shipment. I got to look over the diagram even before I got the item and was able to compare it with the aftermarket radio diagram. A daunting task made simple.

The pins in the Metra harness needed to be bent up or down to fit the OEM wiring plug. The OEM radio connected and disconnected from the car harness multiple times with ease, so I knew the car harness was fine. The Metra harness is "almost" cut to spec... Was surprised I needed to play with individual pins to get the connector to fit on the car connector. I called Crutchfield, sent photos of the alignment differences in both connectors, and was only told "This is the same connector we have shipped for 7+ years...it has to work." It ultimately did, but be prepared with a pair of needle nose to have to tweak some pin alignments.

Pros: Works

Cons: Not as well designed as I had hoped, and needed manual pin alignment help.

This is as close to Plug-n-Play as you can get! All wire colors matched the factory system. If you can use a wire stripper/crimper tool, you can install this product. The plug matched perfectly with the OEM harness and took the "guess-work" out of installing an after-market radio. I've done many car radio installs, but never used a pre-fab wire harness before. It's A Wiring Harness...

Justin H from Woodland Hills on 7/28/2014

2007 Honda Pilot
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I mean, it's a wiring harness.. It does it's job, and does it well. The only pet peeve that I have for every harness, is that the wires don't all come at the set length The ground wire is ALWAYS longer, the antenna wire is usually longer as well. I understand, sometimes it needs to be grounded far back- but I always recut them to the same length, restrip and then do the same on the other end for a perfect and even mate.

Pros: -Basic wiring harness -Hooks up correctly, no fuss no muss. -Wire guage is perfect for the job

Cons: -Wiring length, can be easily resolved with a pair of scissors

This item is excellent for installing a new stereo. It's practically a need. It makes installation so much easier. You can do all the wiring inside your house and just plug it into your car when you're done! And if you ever want to remove the stereo (such as putting the factory stereo in to sell our car) then it can easily be unplugged! It has all the cables you need even for subwoofer and illumination.

Pros: Easy Quicker stereo installation No sound distortion

Plug was part of a tuner/CD player install for a 2005 CRV and it fit perfect on the first try. Cable came with good instructions and was n trouble wiring up. One opinion, instructions call out using crimp lugs, I used solder connections with heat shrink tube. Personal preference, but either way fit is perfect and quality equals or exceeds factory cable.

Pros: Ease of use, good instructions, perfect mate to factory interface without any additional work.

Used to connect Kenwood DPX500BT receiver in 2002 Honda Accord. Wiring was easy color code from receiver to color code of harness. On receiver there is a orange/white wire labeled Illumination and the harness has an orange and an orange./white wire. The orange/white wire of the harness if for dimmer not Illumination If you connect the orange/white to the orange/white of the receiver I read many horror stories of people shorting out the entire dash. Contacted Crutchfield Tech and he stated to not use the orange orange/white wire at all.

Missing wire for steering wheel control interface device

BobM from Harrison, AR on 10/6/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Most aspects were clear for my 2001 Acura MDX, but this was provided with my stereo purchase from Crutchfield in which included in-dash mounting kit, and extra $$ for a steering wheel control interface. I had not reviewed the specific pinouts before ordering, as I thought all would be compatible if prepared by Crutchfield sales over the phone. Imagine my disappointment to find that the single wire I needed for the steering wheel control had been left out. What should have been an easy plug and attach instead required me to splice into the factory wire harness, not too eash to solder this behind the dash. Why not spend another 5 or 10 cents to include this wire just in case the customer wants to purchase a controls adapter?

Pros: Good fit into socket, wires of sufficient length, clearly labeled

Cons: Missing one wire required for steering wheel controls adapter.

Fairly simple to match each wire color and then solder them together and used shrink tubing for isolation. Regarding the ground wires (black), I additionally connected another black wire with a spade connector to chassis ground (a Y connection). Excellent product and master sheet. THANK YOU!

Like the pre-cut harness tips. The ability to prep the harness and head unit before install is a good idea - I can take my time connecting the wiring and soldering for a good connection.

Pros: Free with Head Unit Purchase

Cons: The only time consuming part is finding a good ground and securing two ground wires (one for the head unit and the harness before being able to install the head unit). The Factory Head Unit came out easily - no ground wires to detach.

Hey, it works!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I can say it in one word, "Easy". I printed the wiring diagram from my Pioneer manual in the PDF format, and reviewed the paper "Receiver Wiring Adapter" datasheet. Even though the color coding was exact in my case, I still went by function, as suggested on the "Wiring Adapter" sheet. I read the review about the Orange wire (Illumination) and I nearly went into a panic. But, needless to say, I checked, and I did tuck that wire aside. I also had to include the Steering Wheel Control interface into my wiring configuration.

Pros: Perfect, Does the Job, and Easy Instructions to Follow.

Cons: N/A

Beats Cutting Car Wires

Dave B. from Raymore, MO on 6/20/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This harness was a perfect fit for my 2002 Honda Civic. Since it fits into the car's socket, It saved me from having to cut any wires in the car, which I would have been reluctant to do. With this harness, all you have to do is connect the wires to the wiring harness that comes with the deck. Then just connect this to the car and the other to the deck. I recommend that you get a good wire stripping tool because you will need to strip the insulation off the ends of the wires in order to connect them together.

Pros: Perfect fit. Easy to install

Cons: None

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I almost can't believe this was free with my head unit. It made installing my new stereo the most painless car stereo installation experience I've ever had. I was lucky enough that my head unit's wires matched the colors of these wires down to the last ones, but even if they hadn't the instructions that came with the harness would have been more than sufficient to guide me through. This kind of product being included with my head unit purchase will guarantee I come back to Crutchfield for all my future head unit purchases!! Think the wife's car might need an upgrade next...

Pros: Just solder this to your head unit's harness in your workshop and you can snap your new stereo into the factory harness painlessly.

Cons: Not one!

Works, but....

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

All the wires to hook up stereo to factory wiring, but for whatever reason, this adapter has the wire hookup for illumination and the dimmer wire, do not I repeat DO NOT hookup the dimmer light from your head unit harness (if it is present) to the sold orange illumination wire as you can damage the entire dash illumination because as I researched online it is not fused (honda *facepalm*) and as someone pointed out here, the proper wire is the orange/white striped wire on the harness. Would get 5 stars, but 4 stars because this one wire should not have been included, there is no explanation from metra what each one does which could lead the average person to hookup the solid orange illumination lead and damage their dash leading which includes not just the temp control / radio, but the dash cluster odometers as well

Pros: Works

Cons: Should not have included the illumination wire, bad idea
