Overview

This vehicle-specific wiring harness makes connections between your new car stereo and your car's electrical system.

Metra 70-1817 wiring harness

This vehicle-specific wiring harness makes connections between your new car stereo and your car's electrical system.

First, attach the color-coded wires on your Crutchfield-supplied harness to the wires from your new stereo. If you're not using a soldering iron, we recommend that you purchase some wire connectors to secure the connections. Check out our handy article on three ways to connect the wiring harness here.

Now, once this harness is connected to your new stereo, you'll be able to plug right into your car's factory radio connector. This harness saves installation time since you won't have to cut factory wires individually, and it also enables you to re-install the factory radio if needed. A detailed instruction sheet comes with the harness. Warranty: 60 days.

Please read this important note: This harness may not contain provisions for every wire needed to complete your installation, and it will not accommodate special navigation, video, or factory steering wheel control connections. You will need a special adapter if you want your factory steering wheel audio controls to work with your new stereo.

Connections:

  • 12V constant power
  • 12V switched power
  • power antenna turn-on
  • dimmer
  • left front speaker +/-
  • right front speaker +/-
  • left rear speaker +/-
  • right rear speaker +/-

Note: Most vehicles will require additional installation parts — please identify your vehicle if you haven’t done so. You can also call an Advisor for more information.

All the harness colors match the stereo harness colors for a no guess work wiring job. Plugged into the factory connectors perfectly.

Installed in a 2001 PT cruiser. I am the type who wanted to understand the connections in detail before I progressed. I drew my own connection diagram bridging the existing plug , the wiring harness and the radio socket to know exactly what was going on. It turns out that if you follow the color code you will be OK. The DIN connection, on small wire from the original, is not used.

Pros: Connects the Factory wiring with the JVC receiver perfectly

Cons: Lots of crimping and stripping of wires, not for the faint of heart.

The quality of the wiring harness is pretty great :) For a novice like myself, I was a bit confused - some of the wiring present in my vehicle (2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser) did not match up 1 to 1 with the connections. It turns out the connections weren't necessary, but it was a cause of worry and I wish it was explained a bit with the instructions given with the kit.

Cons: Hard to use without instructions. Ended up not using and hardwired the connections myself. Disappointed.

Crutchfield response on 10/12/2016 After seeing Kirk's review, we wanted to remind customers that we do include instructions for the car stereo wiring harnesses. To save some trees, we include them as a PDF file attached to our customers' order notification. If they are misplaced, our Tech Support crew can always email another copy. Also, Metra includes the wiring codes for their harnesses on the back of the product's bag. We like customers to have all the information at hand when they're ready for their installation.

Allows connection to certain Chrysler and Dodge vehicle harnesses. Crutchfield specific instructions were required to identify vehicle color usage but, in the end, wiring off of these connectors pretty much allows color to color connection with the radio harness. No splices or heat shrink supplied.

Pros: Fits the vehicle connectors perfectly.

Cons: Does not include a vehicle wiring diagram so you need to get that from somewhere (Crutchfield supplies). No splices or heat shrink supplied so you need to have the connection supplies for the type connections you plan to use.

JimL from Somerville, AL on 4/27/2015

1995 Dodge Ram 1500
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This wiring adapter made wiring into factory harness perfectly easy. This is well worth the price and saves lots of time. I would highly recommend this to anyone installing their own radio. This was a first time installation experience for my 16 year old son and so it was fun watching him make all the connections with me there watching to answer any questions. I am pretty sure he will turn to Crutchfield in the future for any audio/ video needs.

Pros: Wire color codes match factory wire colors, easy connection Length of wire is plenty to work with

Cons: Wires are not pre-stripped, which would make the job go quicker Crimps are not included, so you will need to twist and tape, or solder, or purchase your own crimps. If you don't have crimps (like we didn't) I recommend using ty-wraps on twisted wires to prevent separating, then taping over it.

You simply cannot go wrong with using this wiring harness. Simply match the color coded wires from the harness to the correct wires on your new head unit (Hint: The colors usually match identically, but always check the diagram to be certain), splice and secure the connections, attach the radio harness to the back of the new radio, and the other end to the factory plugs in your dash opening. How simple is that?

Pros: I've been installing car stereos for over 20 years, and these harnesses have taken my install time on head units down to 1/3 of what I used to spend standing upside down inside a car splicing wires directly. A heck of a lot less headaches as a result!

Cons: There are no cons to this product. My 8-year-old could do this!

I used to to connect an Alpine stereo to my 2001 Dodge Ram 2500 diesel. I called Crutchfield tech support once for clarification as to what wire connects to the corresponding wire on the car stereo harness. The Crutchfield tech was very helpful. After the call, I noticed that the wires on the harness kit have their purpose typed on the wire itself in small print. This was reassuring. I used Anchor marine grade butt connectors to connect the harness kit to the car stereo harness.

Pros: wire purpose typed on the wire itself.

Cons: limited instructions came with the harness kit.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I ordered a low cost radio through Crutchfield for my 1996 Dodge pickup. I did not want to spend a lot of money as I basically just needed FM stations. Blake at Crutchfield gave me excellent advice. Regarding the wiring I was real nervous on how I was going to wire a Clarion radio to the existing Dodge wiring. With this kit I carefully read the directions, attached the appropriate wires which were easily marked; left front speaker+ or left front speaker-, etc. Taped the wires not needed, turned the key and presto everything worked perfect. No way could I have done this without the kit. Very reasonable and well made. Really impressed with the guidance received by Blake and the constant updates on when the items were shipped and able to track it. Arrived as promised in perfect shape.

fighterace0 from Georgia on 1/20/2014

1991 Dodge Caravan
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Was slightly confused how this was supposed to work. I think I was told I wouldn't need to solder. This comes with a clip on one end and pre stripped wires on the other. You clip into your original wire harness and have to solder or strip the other end to work with your new radio. The color codes were all perfect but I matched the diagram to their function and not color anyway. The clips pre-sort the colors for you and keep you from having to strip and solder/crimp the connections in the car. I soldered these indoors then took them to the car and snapped them in place. NOTE: Doesn't include ground wire. There was no place for me to screw in my existing ground onto the new radio or to bolt the radio's ground to the car easily. I used a nut to secure my existing ground and screw to my new radio's ground wire. Overall this is the easiest way to do it but it does require slightly more work than snap snap done. '93 Dodge Caravan

Pros: Very well organized, great instructions. Easy setup.

Cons: This does require solder or crimping. Ground wire might be a tad tricky.

Using this kit saves your the headache of determining what each wire in the factory harness is for. Simple as matching colors. Spicing all the wires from the stereo onto this is much easier, no need to fumble around inside the dash, just plug in and done. Plus you can easily reinstall the factory head unit if you ever need to. Setting this up ahead of time made installing the deck in my 99 jeep wj take literally 20 minutes start to finish. I have the stock amplified Infinity system so instead of connecting the two solid blue wires, you need to connect the solid blue from the wiring harness to the remote turn-on of the new head unit (mine was blue/white). Works perfectly for both the radio and CD's.

Pros: easy to use

Cons: mastersheet could be more specific and note that you need to cap or tape off the blue wire on the new head unit and only use the remote turn-on wire

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I spent a couple of hours soldering and shrink tubing reliable connections from the Kenwood harness to the Crutchfield reverse wire harness for my 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee. This permitted me to comfortably make all the connections on the workbench and later, quickly snap things together in the dash of the vehicle. I could not be happier with the results.

Pros: Makes installation quick and easy, connections are more reliable. It was free, included with my purchase. It did no damage to the factory wiring and permits the old unit to be placed back in the vehicle if I ever trade.

Easy installation into the existing harness in my old Dodga Dakota. Perfect fit for my 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee, exactly matched my vehcile wiring harness.

Pros: Simple straigh forward instructions, easy to use. I chose to solder the wires and use heat shrinkable tubing to cover them, made it look like a professional installation.

Cons: You do require simple tools and hardware, not for someone who cannot solder or crimp wires. On a DIY scale this would be a beginner project.

Not happy from USAA on 9/23/2013

1995 Dodge Ram 1500
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The kit consists of two wired multiplugs intended to attach to the vehilce connections. The dark colored plug that is provided includes most of the speaker connections and is a male plug. The corresponding vehicle plug is a male plug, and obviously they do not connect. The harness is described as being for my vehicle.

Pros: One plug does connect to the appropriate vehicle plug. This plug has some extraneous connections but can be used. The harness is provided free of charge.

Cons: The inability to use one plug makes it necessary to look up the vehicle wiring color codes and connect half of the wiring one wire at a time. Having done all of that, the use of the one plug is a small convenience.

Crutchfield selected exactly what I needed to install my new headunit into my XJ. Instruction sheet was easy to understand and it was a breeze.

Pros: Works

Cons: Had a bit of confusion as there were two illumination wires (1 orange, 1 orange with a white stripe) on the harness and only 1 for my head unit. Mistakenly threw my connector kit into a dumpster because I removed my head unit from the shipping box and did not read my order sheet stuffed in the packing peanuts. When I reached back to get my order sheet in case of a return I noticed that the bezel kit and the wiring harness were shipped with the head unit. I actually thought I was stiffed by Crutchfield and was prepared to call them back. DOH! After hooking up all the wires the instructions for connecting the ground wire did not make sense. There were a few unknown factory wires that caused concern, but Crutchfield always includes a tech sheet with your purchase. The tech sheet identified those wires and what to do with them. The JVC matched up perfectly and also powered up the factory amp. The only thing that was missing is that you need an after market kit to use the steering wheel controls. Cons: Clearer instructions are needed to tell you that you simply connect these two to the preexisting ones.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Fit well ... I would happily pay for a service to connect these to the radio harness ... like $40 - $50 so it would be all plug and play.

Pros:

Cons: There was another wire set that I didn't know what it was for ... just two wires ... turns out it was a clock adjustment for the factory radio from the vehicle information center ... no effect that it wasn't plugged in, but it would be nice to see it noted. Also, had to buy a male spade terminal for the ground ... would be nice if it came with it.

The only way to go!

Second radio install in this truck. Both times I've used this harness, so when I sell the truck, it'll be easy to plug the old (cheap) radio back in, and keep the Kenwood for the next install.

Pros: Direct plug in, easy install.

Cons: Ground (as mentioned earlier) is not part of this harness. It wasn't designed to be by Chrysler. Also, could use more info on which wire (orange or orange/white) for Illumi circuit. (note: use orange from park lights, not orange/white from dimmer)

I have to say I was very worried about this portion of the install on my new stereo. With these wire harnesses and Crutchfields incredible directions the install and the wiring was a snap. The fit was incredible and the instructions made things very easy without these wiring harnesses you would have to cut your existing harnesses and hope that you got the colors and the connections correct. The best part is Crutchfield knows what harnesses you need for your vehicle they take care of the thinking for you great job Crutchfield

Makes Installation Easy in 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee!

94zj318 from MD on 11/24/2012

Made installation of a radio into my 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee easy. This adapter is cheap to buy and you don't have to splice into your vehicle's factory wiring (you can put the factory radio back in later, so you don't have to cut off the factory wiring harnesses). Wiring was a bit hard to figure out, especially since I've never installed an aftermarket radio before before I installed one in my Jeep. Once I read the instructions several times, though, I finally got the wiring down (that's why I had to give it 4 stars instead of 5). When I sell my Jeep (which won't be for awhile!) I can easily reinstall my factory radio and take my aftermarket radio with me.

Pros: Don't have to splice into factory wiring, can reinstall factory radio easily if I ever sell the vehicle, installed easily and rather quickly.

Cons: Wiring a bit hard to figure out, requires extensive reading of the instruction manual to wire it up.

A must have for the install

If you don't want to splice your car's factory wiring, spending the extra few dollars for the vehicle specific harness is well worth it if your purchase doesn't come with one. When installing the harnesses, you might want to have the two harnesses (car side and radio side) soldered together for the proper installation. If you have a friend or relative that has basic soldering skills, have them solder and heat-shrink wrap the solder joints.

Pros: No factory wire splicing of any kind. Good to have if you car is new and under warranty.

Cons: For proper install, it will require soldering and heat-shrink wrap.

Worked perfectly!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a Crutchfield review as opposed to a wiring harness review (harness was great, by the way). Crutchfield always comes through with flying colors. Might be able to beat their price occasionally by a few pennies, but never their service. Been dealing with them since the late 70s in college and haven't been disappointed once. If there's a problem with a product, they make it right. Period.

Everything wired up pretty easy. I had a couple of wires I wasn't sure about ,but a call to tech support cleared it up.

Pros: Easy to wire up and master sheet was easy to read.

Cons: It has to a lot of wires to slice together between radio harness and receiver harness. Needs to be more plug and play. That is the reason I did't rate it a 5.
