This vehicle-specific wiring harness makes connections between your new car stereo and your car's electrical system. It includes a wire bundle with a connector and a separate red wire for the accessory (12-volt switched) connection. This individual 42" red wire must be run from the receiver to the vehicle's fuse panel to provide 12-volt switched power.
First, attach the color-coded wires on your Crutchfield-supplied harness to the wires from your new stereo. If you're not using a soldering iron, we recommend that you purchase some wire connectors to secure the connections. Check out our handy article on three ways to connect the wiring harness here.
Now, once this harness is connected to your new stereo, you'll be able to plug right into your car's factory radio connector. This harness makes installing your new stereo easier, and allows you to put the factory radio back when you sell your vehicle or return it at the end of the lease. A detailed instruction sheet comes with the harness. Warranty: 60 days.
Please read this important note: This harness may not contain provisions for every wire needed to complete your installation, and it will not accommodate special navigation, video, or factory steering wheel control connections. You will need a special adapter if you want your factory steering wheel audio controls to work with your new stereo.
Note: Most vehicles will require additional installation parts please identify your vehicle if you haven’t done so. You can also call an Advisor for more information.
Average Customer Review(s):
Well built, easy to connect
Made the installation a lot easier.
Part worked Great as always!
Sounded like plug and play..it isn't...at all...for BMW Z4, 06...didn't want to spend all afternoon figuring. It out so took my car to a local installer and paid them 80 bucks to do it...money well spent
Cons: Not plug and play didn't line up at all.
I loved that all the wires had identification markings on them which made the install that much more easier. Sure I had to splice the wires from this harness into the new stereo wiring harness, but it went smoothly. The receiver wiring harness snapped right into my SLK's factory wiring connector.
Perfect fit, finish
Pros: Great connection
Works as it should, connecting Crutchfield receiver to BMW 525i. Only complaint is the blue wire(s) are not covered in the MasterSheet, but a quick call to the helpdesk solved the problem.
Pros: Easy to connect, simple instructions
Cons: The blue wires not covered in MasterSheet.
Took about 10 minutes to make the cable assembly using this and the pigtail that came with the car stereo, this makes install a breeze
Harness great! Let down by Crutchfield not telling me the fuse adapter is for a mini fuse size, but my car has full size fuses. Took 30 min of fighting with it trying to get it to work until i went and compared it to others at the auto parts store and found this out. 39 cents later i had the correct fuse adapter.
Pros: Harness? Perfect...
Cons: Fuse adapter completely wrong!
good harness. works great
As usual, the products included by Crutchfield are perfectly matched to my vehicles. This wiring harness was the perfect fit and matched right up to the car's wiring.
Pros: Perfect match
I used this to replace the factory unit from my 2005 Mini Cooper S with a Kenwood X700 unit. The diagram provided by Crutchfield was great and mating the Kenwood harness to this adapter harness was a snap. If you have a Mini, be aware that the ACC power wire (red) is already part of the harness and the pinkish-red extra wire isn't necessary. Crutchfield support is always there if you have a question.
Pros: Easy, worked great.
I used this to adapt the factory head unit from my 2004 Mini Cooper S to the Kenwood X998 head unit. The included diagram was very helpful in the install and matching up the kenwood wiring harness to this adapter harness. You will need to pay attention to the ACC power wire (red) but there is a note in the instructions regarding when to use this. I have always had good success with the Metra Kits.
Pros: Easy enough for the novice installer.
Cons: Pay attention to the notes in the instructions.
It took me a while and a call to tech support to figure this one out, but I got it done. The speaker wire part was excellent...after much research for online videos and the Crutchfield site.
Pros: Made the overall connection from the new stereo to the car doable after I got it figured out.
Cons: Instructions could have been clearer. I spent a good bit of time educating myself via online videos and Google before I got an understanding of what I needed to do.
They advertise this as a plug and play for the Mini Cooper with harmo kardon sound system. But it will not work unless you purchase a secondary plug and play harness from the UK. If not you have to rewrite all of your speakers to bypass the factory harmo kardon amp.
Greatly eased installation of head unit in '04 Mini Cooper S. Came packed with wrong fuse tap but a quick call to customer support got that sorted
Instructions weren't too clear, but once I figured it out, I was good. I liked how the red wire was an optional part of the harness. I really wished there was an additional red wire to turn on the remote amp though. I used this on my 2003 BMW to replace the basic business CD head unit.
Pros: Works great!
Cons: Could use an additional red wire for the remote amp turn on.
This make installation simple, worth the money for the time saved. never going to install a unit without one.
do not purchase the wire harness. it will only use three wires. the rest you have to splice. all the other wires do not function with HK system and you still will need to splice into a fused accessory power supply.
Pros: the harness uses a functional adapter for three wires. (ground, 12v constant, antenna (i think). The rest you need to splice and wire in.
Cons: not a full adapter. need to spice for steering wheel control, speakers and accessory power. It is also recommended by PAC to add a separate ground.
went in perfectly and made install easy
Pros: perfect fit to factory connector
Not really sure why it didn't pass through the dimmer, but everything worked well. Installation to the radio was easy and straightforward.
The adapter worked perfectly to connect a Kenwood radio to the Mini stock connector.
Worked just as described!
Pros: Wiring adapter. Pretty straight forward.
The wiring harness worked well after figuring out how to connect the wires with those from the receiver. The documentation could be more clear.
Pros: Worked well
Cons: Poor installation document
Not the best looking but it fit and had all the pins to make the thing work. Oh except the dimmer wire, that was not there and I had to hardware it oh well...
exact plug and play!! Crutchfield tech support helped with a couple wires i didn't know what to do with
Pros: it works
Made my easier as I was able to wire my radio to the harness at my kitchen table instead of in my car and I did not have to cut any wires in the car. There was a problem however. Apparently my BMW has an amplifier in it. The wiring harness had a blue wire which I connected to the blue wire on my radio which was for a power antenna. After installing my head unit only the radio placed. No sound for aux or CD. I called up Alpine, the maker of my head unit and was very quickly told that I wired the power antenna wire to the amp. So the amp was only getting power when the radio was on. I had to pull out the radio wire the amp wire from my car to the amp out put from my radio. All was good after that. It took an extra 5-6 minutes to do plus the time to call Alpine. I give the harness only four starts because of that
Pros: Easy installation
Cons: Crutchfield failed to tell me that the blue wire on the harness was for the amp when normally the blue/white wire is for amps
Size is great, spent the extra $10 assuming that it was easier to instal than the other products based on reviews. One important note for a 2006 Mini Cooper: the instructions aren't 100% clear on where to connect one of the wires. You must splice it into the wiring harness thats built into the car, not the intermediate connector between the stereo and car.
Pros: Small, automatic syncing
Cons: Not the best instructions, a lot of excess wire(maybe have more models that are smaller and more simple controller/wires for just specific cars, less versatile)
Easy install and connection for a 2006 MINI Cooper S. No issues.
Pros: Easy Install
Easy to use. It would be nicer if more plugs were available, such as illumination, rather than just the basics.
Pros: Easy to use
Cons: Lacks additional plugs
It just works , gave me plenty of wire , Fit connector perfect.
Pros: fit perfect , Good price
plug and play just like they advertised it.
Didn't work. Came with the Pioneer head unit to adapt to the stock 2005 MINI Cooper wiring harness. It didn't mate with the stock harness pins correctly and wouldn't produce sound from the rear speakers. I ended up eliminating both sides of the harness and hard wiring the unit directly.
Pros: It was free!
Cons: It didn't fit correctly.
great product works perfectly
Easy to connect except for Red jumper wire.
Pros: Easy to install
Cons: The need for the Red constant power wire and the lack of install instructions. The factory stereo did not have a need for this.
I didn't end up using this because the SWC harness had this part built in but it was very awesome that it was free anyway.
Easy to use with great instructions. Made installation quick and easy on a MINI Cooper
I cannot give it five stars as it is a wire harness that simply worked. Nothing fantastic, but a good product or my installer would have griped about it.
Pros: Included with purchase of head unit.
Simple harness saves time and effort!
It doesn't mount flush. You have to wire in your own constant as well with a fuse tap because the constant in the bmw wiring harness isn't a true constant.
Cons: Loss of steering wheel controls.
Easy to use, no real problems noted
Pros: Snapped right in to my automobile factory harness
Cons: Not sure it would fit, but Crutchfield tech support came to the rescue.
The wire harness was very easy to snap on however the power to the fuse box(red wire) tend to pop out of the fuse location occassionally.
This was a great and easy fit after I struggled to find an adapter to fit the wire harness for my Saturn Astra. Although there are a couple connections from my Pioneer 3400 that don't link and therefore cannot be used, I am thrilled to finally get my new stereo connected and working. It was a very easy install with this. The toughest part was getting the ignition switch power. The fuse box is basically in the trunk of the Astra, so I had to go out and get additional wire to reach the wiper fuse. Maybe there was another choice undr he dash, but I am not aware of it. 5 stars for this if all the functionality crossed over. Otherwise.. awesome!
Pros: Easy install!
Cons: Not 100% compatible with my new Pioneer 3400 (missing some connections, and thus features).
Couldn't give it a zero. Not even close. To put it simply, the harness has 11 wires, the head unit 16, and the car about 27. The ball was dropped with this one, not too happy as I have to wait 2-3 weeks for things I get wherever they station me. Car is a 2005 VW Passat station wagon without the monsoon system. NOT a beginner and NOT even my 10th time completing such task let-alone the first. Probably could make it work, but would defeat the purpose of this harness and saved me a couple of weeks.
But for two missing wires, this part would get five stars. Everything fits, it's hard to miss which wires get spliced to the radio's wiring (well, with one exception for the BMW X-3). But this item is missing the dashboard lighting signal, and the fact the BMW X-3 needs power for an external amp was missing from the documentation. Additionally, the information about where to find switched 12 V for the radio (that is, which fuse to tap) was missing. In the end, I had to read through BMW docs to find what I needed - tech support was simply wrong on this point. But everything else was fine, so three stars with two missing for the omissions and error.
Pros: Things fit, most wiring connections are well described.
Cons: Two wire connections are missing in the BMW X-3 harness, the power connection information is totally missing.
Harness and instructions worked great. Colors matched up perfectly.
Pros: Worked great, color match on wires, good instructions
Cons: Could provide small clips for insertion of other wires needed, example: steering wheel control adapter. If I had 2 small clips to put on the adapter wires I could have simply plugged them into the new plug and they would have connected to existing car wiring. As it was I had to tap into 2 more wires outside the harness for the optional steering wheel control wires.
The part where you have to tap into the fuse box for the power wire is annoying, but it if has to be done, it has to be done. I like how this adapter has a place to hold the second connector which only plugs into the stock stereo so that it doesn't dangle around.
The wire contacts kept falling out of the connector housing.
Works as advertised
This is the harness to get, fits 2003 GTI perfectly, even though the website says it does not fit, this is the second one of these I've used, (third stereo to get stolen from this car) , it comes with power lead to run to fuse box and you save money since you don't need the PAC interface.
Good Kit. Strong connections. I dont care for how it taps into the fuse box, but you can always hardwire it.
Fits and works as it should.
Love Crutchfield and their products, however, they kinda dropped the ball on this one. The wire harness is very easy to install, but doesn't allow the back door speakers to work on my 2007 Audi A4. And crutchfield did not have remedy for this. Not too pleased with that, sorry Crutchfield, this time you dropped the ball.
The harness worked great and was a breeze. My only complaint is the fuse box jumper wire required for key power. I'd rather it be worked in somehow other than that way.
Having a harness like this saves so much time and makes the installation so much more convenient.
Overall very good and works as advertised, didn't come with instructions for backlighting/dimming when dashlights turned on so I successfullly winged it, otherwise it'd have been a 5 of 5.
Purchased this radio to replace an existing Pioneer radio that I had previously installed. I used Crutchfield due to the additional free VW antenna connection, VW wiring connection and VW dash pocket. When I got the parcel I realised that the antenna connection was not the correct one for my car neither was the wiring harness and since I didn't have the in dash CD player I didn't need the VW dash pocket although it was a nice though by Crutchfield to include it. Luckily I was able to reuse my existing wiring harness and antenna. I don't know if it is just my car that has the different connections but I ran into the same problem when I swapped out my OME radio with the pioneer. All in all Crutchfield delivered on time and with all the equipment necessary to do the job eventhough it was the wrong equipment.
As usual, the folks at Crutchfield made it almost idiot proof to install this unit. My only issue is the unit will not power off when I turn off the car. I have a VW Touareg. Other than that, the wiring was clean and simple.
LIKES: it snaps right in with the factory harness. DISLIKE: the directions -- the part for antenna was confusing, good thing I called the experts at Crtuchfield, which told me to hook the confusing line to antenna wire. I also didn't like the piggy back for key power onto fuse box. They recommend hooking it to windshield wiper fuse, which makes me nervous since I hate overrides like that. Why couldn't everything be hooked to the wire harness like the factory radio?? Anyway, I had to take the bottom apart, hide the wire inside and into the fuse box. Just like the other person who didn't like piggy backing onto a fuse: it takes some shoving of that prong and trusting what they say -- because it is nerve wrecking to override something you don't quite understand. END RESULT: I was able to get it to work - but the only way you can turn the radio on is with a key in set to ON, which is okay for me since I don't want the radio to drain the battery if I forget to shut it off. One thing for sure, you can totally rely on the experts @ Crutchfield, they're awesome!
My only complaint is with VW for using a digital signal for turning the radio on and off.. for a professional install, there is a wire on the ignition that does exactly what the radio did before (turn off when the key is removed).. which is pretty easy to setup.. (I forget the color of the wire, but I think it was brown and red on my 2003 GTI).. just break out the multi-meter and turn the car off (if it still has power you're close) and if you take the key out and the meter goes to 0 power you found it.. just be sure to put a fuse on the wire (so you don't accidently cause more trouble than you want)..
2002 Jetta TDI with the OEM Monsoon double DIN system. The harness works fine. Yes, the accessory clip to the fuse box is a little kludgy, but it isn't difficult to route and hook up. Not sure why the other reviewer could not find the 25 amp fuse that this should hook into. Seemed pretty straightforward to me, although the increased size of the blade of the fuse makes it a bugger to get back into the slot. VW owners, make sure you add power to the antenna! There was a 12 V lead from the Kenwood amp, that needs to be connected to the power wire of the antenna, but the Crutchfield instructions said nothing about this. Essential for AM reception. Worst part of the installation was getting the wires to move aside to allow for the head unit to move all the way back.
Boy, this makes installation so easy and non-destructive. You can solder the socket to the stereo in the kitchen, then it just snaps into place, no destruction of the car's wiring. Another rating complained about the extra red wire, and it is a pain, but it's VW that causes the pain, not this wire. For the life of me I can't figure out how VW's radios get turned on and off with the key, there does not seem to be a wire around anywhere! I am guessing there is some kind of signalling setup rather than a switched wire. I ended up tapping into a wire our of that fuse rather than using the supplied tap, but it looked like a good idea. If you look you can find several fuses that are good for this job. Thanks for including this gear!
This harness did not work as the instructions said it would. The kit requires you to run a separate wire to fuse box and give you small device to piggy back off of another circuit for switched power. Besides the "iffy" power hook up, the fuse they tell you to tap isn't actually there. I sent mine back.

Crutchfield Wiring Harness: Crutchfield wiring harnesses prevent you from having to cut your vehicle's factory radio plug when replacing your factory radio with an aftermarket head unit. Simply solder or crimp the Crutchfield wiring harness to your aftermarket head unit's harness (solder & crimps not included), plug the aftermarket head unit's plug into the rear chassis of the aftermarket head unit, and plug the Crutchfield wiring harness into your vehicle's factory radio plug.
Note: Installation tools, hardware, & accessories are not included & sold separately. Please see the Accessories tab for recommendations & availability.
Wiring Notes: If the Crutchfield wiring harness is not equipped with a ground wire, you will need to ground the aftermarket head unit's ground wire to the metal chassis of your vehicle. Some vehicle's may require you to bypass the vehicle's factory amplifier (in another location from factory radio) or hardwire certain connections. If your vehicle is equipped with factory steering wheel controls, an additional adapter is required and sold separately.
