Overview

If you've replaced the radio in your Ford, Lincoln or Mercury, you've heard an audible "thump" sound when you turn on the power. The reason? Your Ford radio sent 5 volts to turn on the factory amp, not the 12 volts that your new car stereo delivers. In other words, the amp is simply getting too much juice.

This AFDI-5V converter from Axxess will drop that voltage down to 5 volts, which the factory amp can handle better for an easier (and quieter) start. Warranty: 60 days.

Note: Most vehicles will require additional installation parts — please identify your vehicle if you haven’t done so. You can also call an Advisor for more information.

Perfect part of the install kit for the OEM amp use via the new head unit in a 2001 Mustang GT with the Mach 1 stereo system. It was provided by Crutchfield and later I found out it is a must have to eliminate the "popping" sound through the system speakers when the head unit is first powered up.

This was supposed to eliminate the POP in the subwoofers, when you turn on the radio by dropping the 12 volt signal, down to the 5 volts needed. I wired according to the schematic, but I still hear a POP (not that loud) when the radio first comes on. Radio works fine otherwise, and the POP isn't a big deal to me. According to the wiring directions it appears to be a parallel connection, which is how I wired it. Maybe I didn't wire it correctly, so I gave it the benefit of doubt and 3 stars.

Reduces the 12-volt DC to the 5-volts required by speakers don't absorb the full thrust. In a manner of speaking, it's a safety device for stock 35 -55 watt speakers. The Axxess AFD-5V should be used in any good quality install.

This did exactly what it was intended to do, keep my factory amp/sub from the dreaded pop when powering on. The only problem I faced was that the wire coming from my new head unit was solid blue instead of blue with white stripe as stated in the instructions. My particular head unit apparently had the color coding backwards where the power antenna lead was blue with white stripe and the amp lead was solid blue. I guess most head unit wiring is color coded the opposite way. Other than that it did what it was supposed to do.

It works, but not entirely. There is still a "pop" or "thump" noise every now and then. The wiring is all soldered correctly. I didn't want to cut and wire/solder so I am just dealing with it. It happens randomly mainly, when I shut off the car.

This part was recommended because I was replacing a receiver in a Mach 460 sound system from a Ford Mustang. These are notoriously tricky sound systems. This part prevents power surges (loud pops) from the subwoofer when you power on the receiver. It works perfectly. In fact, my sub had a quiet, but noticeable, thump when I powered up the factory receiver. Now there is no sound at all. Better than factory!

this product was supposed to prevent the "thump" noise when they car is powered on however after wiring everything in (without this part) I started my car and there was no "thump" noise so this part found its way into the trash.

Pros: Might help someone with their Thump noise. But not me

Cons: Instructions unclear. Didn't need this part anyway.

2007 Ford Mustang
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Ford vehicles with premium factory audio systems have a lower voltage remote turn-on for their factory amps than the 12 volt turn-ons in most aftermarket decks. Without a converter, turning on your ignition with an aftermarket deck gives you a VERY loud "POP" through your speakers. Besides being shockingly loud, the pop makes your whole sound system seem cheap. This converter is extremely simple to wire up and eliminates the annoying pop. It's definitely worth the money. Don't even THINK of installing an aftermarket deck in a Ford with a "Shaker" audio system without this converter.

Pros: Eliminates the pop Low cost Super easy to install

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Either this items does not work or we hooked it up wrong. I am guessing we hooked it up wrong. The instructions for this item were probably the some of the worst we have encountered. It appeared that they used different terminology for some of the wires than JVC did for their wires. Needless to say, we hooked it up but the "pop" is still there and is annoying. I have no desire to spend another 2-3 hours trying to fix it, and I'm not sure I could anyway.

Pros: At this point there are none. Just a waste of money.

Cons: Instructions are not clear. Item is not working as advertised. As I said above, terminology used for the wires is not the same. I think if you do this sort of thing all the time you probably won't have an issue. For all I know it is hooked up correctly and just doe not work but I may never know.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had no idea that anything like this was even necessary. It has been over 30 years since I've installed a stereo into a car but Crutchfield made the experience as easy as could be. This harness drops the amp voltage from 12 volt to 5 volt and eliminates the loud pop at boot up if you have too much voltage. Works perfectly!

Pros: Simple straightforward easy installation.

Cons: None!

They all can' be perfect.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The piece was sent separately after I described a loud popping noise comming from my new Kenwood CD receiver. After installing it, the stereo no longer worked. (The technician told me it should have been included in the installation package so it was free.) Trouble shooting it with the technician revealed it was defective. They offered to replace it but also suggested if i was in a hurry, i could get one off the shelf at a local electronics store. I was in a hurry... The point of this is the invoice sent with the Axxess listed it at over $$ while down the street it cost $. Granted, I had to solder 3 wires and cover it with a piece of heat shrink but for the price and 10 minutes work, well, it was a good thing it was free.

Pros: Preassembled, ready to go and it will eliminate the "pop".

Cons: I was defective. (and potentially expensive)

fits schematic perfect

Pros: installed like crutfield said for my stock bass in my explorer sport trac 2002. i guess this is necessary to reduce the volts to my stock sub from the new pioneer receiver?

Cons:

Works as advertised

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Since this came for free with my receiver, I can't gripe. I didn't try the system without it, so I can't say for sure that it was needed. What I do know is that I don't get a voltage pop and it performed without a hiccup.

Pros: simple instructions

Cons: none

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The 03 Ford Escape had the Mach Sound system with built-in Subwoofer. The Sub would make a loud thump sound when you turned the key ignition on. This product solved that issue and the Sub works with no issues. Great idea!

Pros: Worked like a charm. Easy installation.

Cons:

Features

Overview: When replacing factory radios in vehicles with factory installed amplifiers (mainly in Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury vehicles), an audible "pop" through the speakers may be heard; especially the subwoofer. The main reason for this "pop" noise is that the factory amplifiers do not require 12-volts to turn on, but instead require 5-volts. The Axxess AFDI-5V 12-volt to 5-volt converter takes a normal 12-volt turn-on from an aftermarket head unit and drops it down to 5-volts, which the factory amplifier handles better. A 3-wire hook-up makes the AFDI-5V simple to install.

  • Connect the Blue/White wire to the aftermarket head unit's amplifier turn on wire.
  • Connect the Black wire to chassis ground.
  • Connect the Blue/Red wire to the vehicle's factory amplifier turn-on wire.

Review your wiring diagram to find the Amp turn on wire coming from your factory radio going to the factory amp. This is the wire you would connect the blue wire with the red strip. I am not sure of what the color of wire would be in your vehicle as it is different than my son's mustang.[ Concours14  Jul 13, 2016 ]
